The Kansas Forestry Service’s Tanker 95 operated from the Great Bend Municipal Airport on Tuesday afternoon and evening.

The Grumman S2F aerial firefighting tanker conducted water drops on the fires burning between Larned and Garfield.

Great Bend Fire Department personnel helped with hoses and connection to a fire hydrant at the airport to refill the 800-gallon water tank in the belly of the aircraft.

Tanker 95 conducted at least five drops from the Great Bend airport before returning to their Hutchinson Regional Airport base.

Plans were being made Tuesday night by the Red Cross to set up a rest area at the Larned Community Center for fire fighters and citizens affected by the fire.

The Kansas Forest Service is also assisting with fires in Hodgeman, Jewell and Rooks counties.
