Indictment: Kan. man lied to get VA reimbursement

WICHITA, KAN. – A southwest Kansas man faces prison time and a fine for submitting false claims to the Department of Veterans Affairs, according to the United State's Attorney.

Edward Parks, 60, Liberal, Kan., is charged with one count of submitting false claims for travel reimbursement to the Department of Veterans Affairs and one count of making a false statement to investigators from the Department of Veterans Affairs – Office of Inspector General. The crimes are alleged to have occurred in 2019 in Sedgwick County, Kan.

The indictment alleges he falsely claimed he travelled to Wichita, Kan., from Liberal, Kan., for medical appointments, in order to be reimbursed under the Beneficiary Travel Program.

 If convicted, he could face up to five years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000 on each count. The Department of Veterans Affairs – Office of Inspector General investigated. Assistant U.S. Attorney Debra Barnett is prosecuting.
