Female accomplice charged in escape from Larned State Hospital

PAWNEE COUNTY — Formal charges were filed Wednesday afternoon against Emilia Melinda Brown, 38 of Ulysses, in connection with the Monday night escape of Isaac Nathaniel Watts, 43 of Ulysses, from the Crisis Stabilization Unit on the Campus of Larned State Hospital, according to Pawnee County Attorney Doug McNett.

Just after 11a.m. Tuesday, the Garden City Police Department arrested Watts and Brown at the Hampton Inn, 2505 Crestway Drive in Garden City.

Brown is charged with Aiding Escape, a severity level 7 nonperson felony. Bond has been set at $15,000 cash or surety. She remains in the custody of Finney County Detention Center. Arrangements are being made to by the Pawnee County Sheriff’s Office to transport her to the Pawnee County Jail.

The Complaint alleges she provided transportation for Watts from the Larned State Hospital campus. At the time of the escape, Watts was subject to a hold by the Grant County Sheriff for felony charges that included Attempted Second Degree Murder and Aggravated Kidnapping.

Watts will be formally charged with Aggravated Escape from Custody once the law enforcement investigation is completed. The investigation is being handled by the Pawnee County Sheriff’s Office, according to McNett.
