The Junction City Blue Jays rolled to a 49-7 halftime lead over the Emporia Spartans ( 2-5 ) enroute to a 62-15 victory Friday night in the final regular season football game at Al Simpler Stadium.
Junction City tallied 535 yards of total offense including 369 passing and 166 rushing in the win, which also came on Senior Night for JCHS. Blue Jay coach Randall Zimmerman said he was proud of his players. We talked about after the game remembering back seven ballgames ago when we were walking off the field at Bishop Carroll. I challenged these kids and they have done nothing but stepped up to the plate and swung the bat."
DJ Giddens ran for four touchdowns, Russell Wilkey caught one TD pass and ran for another, and Andrew Khoury threw for 369 yards and three TD's, while Marcell caught five passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns for Junction City.
The stadium has been in use since September of 1965 when Junction City defeated Emporia in the first game at the facility 7-6. Returning to the stadium and recognized at halftime were former head coach Ron Hill, assistants Buck Gibson, Bob Laster and Jim Pendarvis. Former player Jim Frownfelter returned for the contest. He played in the first game at the stadium in 1965.
Junction City ( 6-1 ) plays Highland Park in Topeka next Thursday night.
