SEDGWICK COUNTY—No school for students at Derby Hills Elementary School on Monday after a weekend fire.
Just before 6a.m. Sunday, firefighters were dispatched to a fire alarm activation at the school, 2230 North Woodlawn in Derby, according to a media release.
Engine 82 and Squad 81 arrived to find heavy smoke in the cafeteria, and the incident was upgraded to a commercial building fire. Automatic aid from Sedgwick County Fire District 1 and Mulvane were added to the response.
During their investigation, firefighters located a fire involving a grease/water separator in the kitchen area. Crews were able to quickly contain and extinguish the fire.
The immediate kitchen area and cafeteria sustained moderate smoke and fire damage.The cause of the fire remains under investigation; however, the fire appears to have originated within the grease/water separator. There was nobody in the building at the time of the fire and no injuries reported. The school will only be closed for classes on Monday. All other USD 260/ Derby schools will operate as scheduled.
