Arrest made after 6-year-old Kan. boy injured in shooting

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities  investigating a shooting that injured a 6-year-old have made an arrest.

Just before 1:30 pm Monday, police were dispatched to the 3100 block of South Yale in Wichita for reports of gunshots heard in the area, according to Officer Trevor Macy.

A witness reported a vehicle leaving the area with adults and one child. That vehicle arrived at an area hospital a short time later with a six-year-old boy who had suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

Officers stopped an adult suspect identified as 22-year-old Abdulrahman Melhem of Wichita. The shooting was reported to be accidental. 

Later, police arrested Melhem on requested charges of reckless aggravated battery, according to Macy.

The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s office.
