Kan. teen accused in fatal mall shooting set for detention hearing

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A detention hearing for a 16-year-old arrested in connection with the fatal shooting at Towne East Square  will be held Tuesday, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

The hearing is set for 1:30p.m. in Judge Patrick Walters’ courtroom in Juvenile District Court in Wichita.

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal shooting at Towne East Mall on Friday have identified the 14-year-old victim as Trenjvious Hutton of Wichita, according to Officer Chad Ditch.

Just after 5:30 p.m. on Friday, officers responded to a shooting at Towne East Mall, 7700 E Kellogg Drive in Wichita.

Upon arrival, officers entered the mall and located 14-year-old Trenjvious Hutton inside who had been shot. He was pronounced deceased on scene.

The investigation revealed, Hutton was involved in a physical altercation with several individuals known to him stemming from an ongoing dispute. During the altercation a 16-year-old suspect pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots, striking Hutton. The suspect then fled on foot.

Witnesses provided officers with a description of the suspect which allowed arriving officers to quickly locate him in the area and make an arrest, according to Ditch.

A 17-year-old boy with the suspect was detained, questioned, and released. Additionally, officers also recovered two handguns during the investigation.

The 16-year-old shooting suspect is being held on a requested charge of 2nd-degree murder, according to Ditch.
