Police arrest suspect in Kansas homicide investigation

SHAWNEE COUNTY–Law enforcement authorities investigating a second fatal shooting this week in Topeka have identified the victim as 55-year-old Troy Shepard ofTopeka and arrested 32-year-old Christopher F. Ray of Topeka in connection with the killing.

Just before 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to report of a shooting in the 900 block of SW 17th Street in Topeka, according to Lt. Ron Ekis.

Officers located Shepard suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. 

Ray is being held on requested charges of first-degree murder, according to Police Lt. Donna Eubanks.

On Monday 33-year-old Sherman Coleman Jr, of Topeka died from injuries in a shooting in the  2300 block of SE Bellview Avenue in Topeka.

Police have not released  possible suspect details in these cases.
