Alert employee helps police catch Kansas burglary suspect

SHAWNEE COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities investigating a burglary have made an arrest.

Just after 5:30 a.m. Monday, police responded to a burglary in progress at 1900 SW 41 Street, according to Lt. Manuel Munoz.

An alert employee of Wright Tree Service observed an individual breaking the window to a company truck and saw the individual trying to break the window to a nearby business. The employee provided additional information to the dispatcher as the to the direction of travel. Officers arrived and were able to set up a perimeter.

As a result of the investigation, an individual was taken into custody nearby with the assistance of a K9 unit.

Juan Carlos Chavez, 30, of Topeka was transported to Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Burglary, Felony Criminal Damage, Felony Obstruction and Theft.
