SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating what appears to be an accidental shooting which injured a 10-year-old girl.

Just after 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, police responded to a shooting at a residence in the 600 block of South Saint Paul Avenue in Wichita, according to officer Kevin Wheeler.

First responders located the 10-year-old, who had a gunshot wound to her upper body.  EMS transported her to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.

The investigation revealed that a 38-year-old man was handling a gun in a bedroom while she was in an adjoining bathroom.

While he was handling the gun, it went off, striking the 10-year-old.  The girl’s 35-year-old mother was also in the bedroom with the 38-year-old, but she was not injured, according to Wheeler.

Police released no additional details early Thursday.
