Kan. felon charged in deputy shooting, motel standoff

SEDGWICK COUNTY—A Kansas man arrested in connection with an officer involved shooting in Wichita made his fist court appearance Thursday.

Kory Anziana, 26, is charged with two counts of fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault, criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, interference with law enforcement, and possession of paraphernalia for use, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Just before 1:30a.m. Jan. 24, a Sedgwick County sheriff’s deputy observed the driver of a red Lexus later identified as Anziana commit a traffic violation near the intersection of Pawnee and Meridian in Wichita, according to Sheriff's Lt. Benjamin Blick.

The deputy attempted to stop the Lexus and Anziana fled in the vehicle. The pursuit lasted approximately six minutes with the top speeds reported near 70 MPH. The pursuit ended when the Lexus became high-centered in the parking lot of the Regency Inn at 6125 W Kellogg Drive in Wichita.

Anziana shot at the pursuing deputy and two deputies returned fire. No one was struck by any of the gunfire. He then fled into an occupied room at the Regency Inn. One of the occupants of the room was able to communicate with motel staff and eventually law enforcement through a messenger app. Eventually, the occupants of the room walked out on their own. At approximately 8:25a.m. the deputies arrested Anziana.

 Anziana has previous conviction that include theft and for drugs, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections. His next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 10, according to the district attorney's office.
