SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas man convicted of a violent attack on a teen, later identified as his girlfriend, was to learn his fate on Friday.

The sentencing hearing for 24-year-old Dominic Thomas was continued until after Christmas, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.  He is scheduled to return to court on December 29.  A scheduled hearing for Thomas was also delayed in November.

In November of 2024, a jury convicted Thomas, who was 19 at the time of the crime, of attempted first-degree murder.

Just after 10 p.m. on Sept. 21, 2020 police responded to an assault report at a home in the 3900 block of North Litchfield in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson

Upon arrival, officers contacted a 17-year-old girl who was visibly shaken and wet. The investigation revealed 19-year-old Dominic Thomas and the victim were talking near a pond at 37th Street North and Sullivan when a disturbance occurred.

During the disturbance, Thomas battered the girl, drug her to a nearby pond and held her head under the water. Thomas then released her and fled. Officers later located Thomas, and he was arrested without further incident.
