
TOPEKA— One person was injured in a house fire on Monday in Topeka.
Just after 4:30p.m., crews responded to a fire at a home at 2953 SE Highland in Topeka, according to Fire Marshall Todd Harrison.
First arriving crews reported smoke and flames visible from the single story brick duplex. The fire was extinguished, keeping it contained to the room of fire origin. The remaining structure sustained varying degrees of smoke and water damage throughout.
EMS transported one adult victim for evaluation and treatment of non-life threatening smoke inhalation. Two juvenile occupants were able to escape unharmed.
Preliminary investigation indicates the cause of the fire as Accidental; more likely than not associated with juveniles playing with a lighter, according to Harrison.
The Estimated dollar loss is $40,000.00; of which $30,000.00 is associated with structural loss and $10,000.00 is associated with content loss.
Two occupants of the adjoining duplex have been temporarily displaced as a result of the fire. Working smoke detectors were present within the residence, according to Harrison.
