FINNEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal shooting in southwest Kansas will not file charges, according to a media release from Garden City Police.

Just before 5:30a.m. March 6, police responded to report of a shooting in the 2600 Block of North 3rd Street in Garden City.

First responders found 27-year-old Braxton Lloyd inside a residence with a gunshot wound.  EMS transported him to St. Catherine Hospital and later he was transferred to a Wichita hospital where he died.

Investigators determine Lloyd was picked up by a family member after being out for the evening. An altercation ensued between the individuals and another family member at the residence, according to police.

Lloyd allegedly produced a firearm and threatened family members when he was shot.

Garden City Police and the Finney County Attorney’s Office reviewed evidence gathered as part of the investigation.

At this time, both agree the evidence available provides probable cause that the suspect in the shooting acted in self-defense. Therefore, no arrests should be made, and no charges will be filed.
