Generator malfunction blamed for Kansas house fire

TOPEKA —A Thursday night fire at a Kansas home is being blamed on the malfunctioning generator.

Just before 9:30p.m. Thursday, crews responded to the report of a fire at a home at 880 SE Rice Road in Topeka, according to Fire Marshal Todd Harrison.

First arriving crews found fire coming from a deck on the side of a single-story home. A search of the building revealed that all occupants of the structure were able to self-evacuate prior to fire department’s arrival. Firefighters contained to the area of origin and quickly extinguish the fire.

A preliminary investigation indicates the cause of the fire as accidental, more likely than not associated with the malfunction of a generator, according to Harrison.

The estimated dollar loss is $6000.00 of which $5000.00 is associated with structural loss and $1,000.00 is associated with content loss. There were no injuries reported.
