The driver began to pass numerous vehicles without sufficient clearance and struck a southbound 2010 Mercury Grand Marquis driven by Melinda J. Wareham, 74, Whiting. The vehicles collided head-on, according to Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse.

Wareham was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Frontier Forensics.

The KHP arrested James on requested charges of involuntary manslaughter, driving under the influence, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and reckless driving, according to Morse.

North and southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 75 were closed with traffic rerouted until after 2:30p.m.
