SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas man has been found guilty in a drug deal killing of a teenager.

Last week, 27-year-old Jaron Palmer of Wichita was found guilty of first-degree murder in the April 2021 death of Eric Stokes Jr. at a west Wichita apartment complex, according to the Sedgwick County district attorney's office.

In April of 2021 , police were dispatched to report of a shooting at the&nbsp;Morgan's Landing Apartments complex in the 3800 Block of West 13th Street in Wichita, according to Police Captain Jason Stephens.

When officers arrived, they learned there were five individuals inside the apartment at the time of the incident including 17-year-old Eric Stokes of Wichita who was shot and killed.

Through the investigation, detectives determined two suspects and possibly others were involved in the incident.

EMS transported a second shooting victim identified as a 17-year-old boy to a local hospital. He was treated for minor injuries and released, according to Stephens.

Investigators learned that three unknown, armed suspects arrived at the apartment, forced their way in and fired several shots that killed Stokes.&nbsp; The suspects fled on foot from the apartment complex.&nbsp; It was not a random incident and drugs are believed to have played a part, according to Stephens.

Police released a video of two suspects involved in the homicide.&nbsp; After the release, police received numerous tips from the community, which led to the identification and arrest of 18-year-old Easton Palmer&nbsp; and&nbsp;<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20070532">18-year-old Breckyn I. Elliot</a>&nbsp;both of Wichita. They were originally charged with first degree murder and&nbsp; aggravated robbery.&nbsp;Elliott charge were later reduced to attempted obstruction and attempted possession of marijuana.

On June 21, police arrested Jaron Palmer.&nbsp; He is scheduled for sentencing in March, according to the district attorney's office.

Stokes was killed at Morgan's Landing Apartments near 13th and West Street. Police say Stokes and four others were in an apartment when three armed suspects in masks forced their way inside.&nbsp;Stokes and the others&nbsp;went into a bedroom, and police allege the suspects fired several shots. A second teen suffered minor injuries in the shooting.

Investigators said they believed the shooting to be drug-related.

Easton Shaner-Palmer, 21, Jaron's brother, was also arrested in connection to the shooting. He pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary and attempted robbery in August of 2023 and was sentenced to five years and five months in prison. The third suspect, 21-year-old Breckyn Elliott, is charged with attempted obstruction and attempted possession of marijuana.&nbsp;

Palmer is scheduled for sentencing on March 8.&nbsp;

Security camera image led to conviction in murder of Kan. teen

According to Wichita Police Lt. Aaron Moses, a bicycle ridden by 71-year-old Michael Espinoza of Wichita and a sedan were involved in a collision in the 5900 block of South Seneca.

EMS transported Espinoza to an area hospital where he died.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Investigators are still gathering information to determine everything that led to this collision. No arrests have been made in this case. All involved parties remained on the scene and are cooperative with the investigation, according to Moses.

Police ID 71-year-old bicyclist who died after Kansas crash

CASS COUNTY — A driver involved in chase and crash with a child in the SUV near Kansas City has been formally charged.

According to the Cass County Sheriff, 45-year-old Jacob Rullman of St. Joseph has been charged with Resisting Arrest, a Class E Felony. Rullman also faces a first-degree charge for Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a Class D Felony. 

Just after 4:30p.m. Monday, deputies with the Cass County Sheriff's Office attempted to stop a vehicle traveling southbound on 7 Highway near Creighton, according to a media release.

  The vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit ensued.  The driver, later identified as Rullman, continued throughout the county until a tire deflation device was used near the area of 2 Highway and Kauffman. 

Rullman lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a nearby field.  As deputies were taking him into custody, they overheard the sounds of a small child from the backseat. 

 Deputies were able to quickly extract the child from the vehicle. Deputies transported Rullman to an undisclosed hospital for evaluation.  The child, who stated she was unharmed, was checked by EMS on scene and safely returned to her mother upon her arrival. 

He is being held at the Cass County Jail on a $200,000 cash only bond.

Charges filed in KC-area pursuit crash with child in SUV

A Pratt County man was arrested late Tuesday evening after a high-speed motorcycle pursuit that began approximately nine miles north of St. John on US-281 Highway just before 7:30 p.m.

According to Kansas Highway Patrol Dispatch, a trooper attempted to pull over the driver of a motorcycle, later identified as 33-year-old Tyler Lingle of Cullison, for going 82 miles an hour in a 65-mile-an-hour zone on US-281 near Northwest 120th Street. The driver fled and the motorcycle reached speeds up to 130 miles an hour before crashing just across the Barton-Stafford County line near Northeast 70 Road.

The driver then fled on foot. Law enforcement used K-9s and a KHP aircraft to help locate Lingle, who was transported to the Barton County Jail at 9:13 p.m.

Lingle was arrested on Stafford County requested charges for flee and elude, felony interference with law enforcement, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving without a license, circumvention of an interlock device, expired registration, and speeding. He was released after posting a $10,000 surety bond.

And the total raised just through one online fundraiser surpassed $145,000, which is far in excess of the estimated $75,000 value of the bronze statue that was cut from its base&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jackie-robinson-baseball-statue-stolen-beea370b17079ad30092affe6aaea3c1">last week</a>&nbsp;at a park in Wichita, Kansas. Police are searching for those responsible.

Only the statue's feet were left at McAdams Park, where about 600 children play in a youth baseball league called League 42, which is named after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/jackie-robinson">Robinson’</a>&nbsp;s uniform number with the Brooklyn Dodgers, with whom he broke the major leagues' color barrier in 1947.

Fire crews found burned remnants of the statue&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jackie-robinson-baseball-statue-stolen-45c08bbbd29322c05e6136a67f687459">Tuesday</a>&nbsp;while responding to a trash can fire at another park about 7 miles&nbsp; away. A truck believed to be used in the theft previously was found abandoned, and police said the theft was captured on surveillance video.

Bob Lutz, executive director of the Little League nonprofit that commissioned the sculpture, said Wednesday in a&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/boblutz/status/1752820101751963668">message</a>&nbsp;on X, formerly Twitter, that the MLB commissioner’s office and 30 clubs had committed funding toward the cost of replacing the statue and providing other support.

Lutz had said earlier that the money raised also could enhance some of its programming and facilities. In April, the group opened the Leslie Rudd Learning Center, which includes an indoor baseball facility and a learning lab.

“We’re not just baseball,” Lutz said. “We have after school education, enrichment and tutoring.”

One of the largest donations is a $10,000 pledge from an anonymous former Major League Baseball player who won a World Series. Wichita police Chief Joe Sullivan, who announced the donation over the weekend, has urged anyone involved in the theft to surrender and vowed that arrests were imminent.

“The community, along with the business community and the nation as a whole, have demonstrated an incredible outpouring of support,” Sullivan said in a statement Wednesday. “This effort highlights the kindness of the people and their determination to rebuild what was taken away from our community.”

Lutz, whose friend, the artist John Parsons, made the statue before his death, said the mold is still viable and anticipated that a replacement can be erected within a matter of months.

“We value what it represents,” he said. “It’s important that our 600 kids understand what it represents. And, we make every effort to educate our kids about the role that Jackie Robinson played in life and civil rights, his life beyond sports. He’s the absolute best role model you could imagine.”

He’s considered not only a sports legend but also&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mlb-entertainment-sports-los-angeles-baseball-d73b75a6965310bfd087c165e93dc0c6">a civil rights icon</a>. Robinson died in 1972.

Lutz said that the league appeals to “all kids, but especially to kids of color" and that the connection to Robinson resonated.

“We can’t imagine, being named League 42 without a Jackie Robinson statue in our park," he said. "It was a no-brainer when we went about trying to name our league. And the name League 42 came up. It was like lightning and struck. We knew we had our name.”

MLB pledges funds to replace destroyed Jackie Robinson statue

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating the weekend death of two Kansas teens have made three additional arrests including a 15-year-old from Garden City.

Just after 11:45p.m. January 26, the Wichita Police Department responded to reports of shots being fired in the area of 5200 E Kensington in Wichita, according to Officer Juan Rebolledo.

Around the same time, officers were dispatched to an area hospital for the report of two walk-in shooting victims. Emoni Shears, 14, and Jhiquez Roberts, 19, both of Wichita were later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Detectives and patrol officers immediately began investigating this case and following up on leads. Later Saturday, police&nbsp;arrested a 14-year-old from Wichita on requested charges of felony murder and one count of juvenile in possession of a firearm.

Just after 4p.m. Tuesday, the Wichita Police Department Violent Crimes Team successfully located and apprehended an 18-year-old suspect in the case identified as Hayden Rydell Williams of Wichita, according to the Sedgwick County arrest report. He is being held on requested charges of First Degree murder and parole violations, <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/InmateSearch/Details.aspx?Id=745809">according to online jail records.</a>

On Wednesday, police reported investigators successfully located and apprehended three additional suspects, a 16-year-old boy and 17-year-old boy both from Wichita and a 15-year-old boy from Garden City, according to Moses. They were arrested on requested charges of Felony Murder , according to Police Lt. Aaron Moses.

15-year-old from SW Kan. among 5 accused in double-homicide 

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating an alleged robbery have taken two suspects into custody.

Welty was issued total bond of $90,000 and Bauer was issued a total bond of $82,000. Both suspects remain confined in the Riley County Jail. Welty has previous convictions for possession of marijuana and attempted obstruction, according to the Kansas Department of Corections.

 Kan. felon accused of aggravated robbery in Manhattan

SEDGWICK COUNTY — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating two officer-involved shootings in Wichita over the past week.

Just after 11:30 p.m. Jan. 24, police initiated a vehicle pursuit near East Bayley and Schweiter Drive in Wichita after they located a suspect later identified as 43-year-old Larry Armour of Wichita, operating a vehicle that was reported stolen at knifepoint earlier in the night.

A police&nbsp; pursuit ended near East Harry Street and Green Street and Armour fled on foot.

Preliminary information indicates that then Armour entered a residence in the 2400 block of East Harry through the back entrance, while armed with a knife. A man who lived at the home who was unacquainted with Armour, was inside.

A tactical team, comprised of both officers from Wichita police, Sedgwick County sheriff's deputies and crisis negotiators, quickly responded to the residence. 

Just before 1 a.m., members of the tactical team arrived on scene. Negotiations with Armour were attempted. Just after 3 a.m., a deputy observed Armour through a window, standing over the innocent resident threatening him with a large knife and shouting that he would kill him. The deputy fired one shot striking Armour, and ending the hostage incident.

Medical aid was administered to Armour, and EMS transported him to a Wichita hospital. Despite life-saving measures, he died from his injuries. As a precaution, the resident was transported to a local hospital for evaluation, but he was uninjured during the incident. No law enforcement officers were injured during the shooting.

Armour had a&nbsp; previous felony conviction for drugs and had been on parole since 2018, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections. On January 12, Wichita police arrested him on a requested charge of aggravated robbery and flee or attempt to elude&nbsp; police, according to Sedgwick County Arrest records.&nbsp;

Then on Jan. 29, the KBI began investigating the shooting death of 14-year-old Claude Hodges of Wichita.

At around 6:20 p.m. Jan. 28, police arrived at an apartment at 8405 W. Central in Wichita, to check on 14-year-old Claude Hodges after his father called concerned for his welfare.

When they arrived at the apartment they knocked and received no response. They observed a bullet hole in the apartment's exterior wall and also found a fired bullet on the ground near the entrance.

WPD officers quickly obtained a key and entered the apartment. Upon entering they found a woman, later identified as 43-year-old Kylee R. Hodges, of Wichita, holding a handgun. A shotgun was also nearby. Officers quickly withdrew from the apartment and notified negotiators.

Preliminary information indicates negotiators began talking with Hodges at around 8:20 p.m. A tactical team, comprised of both polie and deputies from the Sedgwick County Sheriff's office were called to the apartment at around 9:45 p.m.

Discussions with Hodges continued for several hours in an effort to convince her to disarm and exit peacefully. At one point they convinced Hodges to come out of the apartment and leave her handgun on the ground outside, but she remained close to the gun.

At around 1:40 a.m., Hodges quickly picked up the handgun again, and advanced toward officers while pointing the firearm in their direction. Two SWAT officers from Wichita police each fired one shot toward Hodges, striking her.

Medical aid was rendered, and EMS transported Hodges to a local hospital. No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident. Once officers reentered the apartment, they discovered Claude Hodges in a bedroom deceased from a gunshot wound. Kylee Hodges underwent surgery and is expected to survive her injuries.

Police will continue to investigate the homicide of 14-year-old Claude Hodges. The KBI will conduct a thorough and independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Once completed the findings will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney for review.&nbsp;

Body cam photos released after 2 Kan. officer shootings in past week

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating alleged animal cruelty seized dozens of cats and dogs from a Kansas home and made two arrests.

Just after 8 a.m. Tuesday, police executed a search warrant in the 1400 block of SW Fillmore Street in Topeka in response to a reported animal abuse case, according to police spokesperson Rosie Nichols.

Officials from the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and animal welfare partners from across the country also responded to assist police.

Upon arrival, officer made contact with the owners of the residence, then found dozens of cats and dogs living in hazardous conditions with little to no access to food and clean water.

The Topeka Police Department’s Animal Control Officers (ACOs) along with other law enforcement officials assisted animal welfare professionals from HSUS and other animal welfare organizations in removing the animals and giving them care.

Humane Society of the United States is transporting the rescued animals to a confidential, safe location where they will continue to be examined by licensed veterinarians and receive the care they need.

Topeka Police Animal Control Officers recognized the nature of the situation and requested the assistance of Humane Society of the United State.&nbsp; Authorities found a total of 91 animals. They seized 73 animals and 18 animals were found deceased, according to Nichols.

Police arrested 30-year-old&nbsp;Desiree Elaine Therrien and 28-year-old&nbsp;Charles Cornelius Solomon on requested charges of&nbsp;Cruelty to animals; Abandon without provisions for care; 1st.

Police arrest 18-year-old in killing of two Kansas teens

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A prized statue of&nbsp;Jackie Robinson&nbsp;stolen from a public park in Wichita last week has been found dismantled and burned, according League 42 founder Bob Lutz.

Early Tuesday, fire crews responded to a fire in a trash can at Garvey Park 3501 South Washington in Wichita, according to Wichita Police spokesperson Andrew Ford. The dumpster contained remaining pieces of the statue.&nbsp;

The statue was cut at the ankles to be removed. All that remained of the statue were Robinson's feet.  On Monday police reported they had recovered the truck believed to be used in the theft of the statue.

The statue honors the first player to break Major League Baseball's color barrier in 1947. Surveillance video was released of two people hauling the sculpture away in the dark.&nbsp;

The Wichita Metro Crime Commission offered a reward Friday of up to $2,500 for tips leading to arrests in the case.

Robinson played for the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues before joining the Brooklyn Dodgers, paving the way for generations of Black American ballplayers. He's considered not only a sports legend but also a civil rights icon.

Wichita City Council member Brandon Johnson called the theft “horrendous” and “disgusting,” and said that residents are feeling hurt and angry, and demanding justice. During the Tuesday news conference Johnson said the statue will be replaced.

Police have not reported an arrest in the crime. Police Chief Joe Sullivan asked those involved to turn themselves in.&nbsp; Sullivan said he expects to make arrests in the case.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating the cause of a house fire have made an arrest.

Just after 10 a.m. Sunday, crews&nbsp;responded to a house fire at 1401 NE Quincy Street in Topeka, according to police spokesperson Rosie Nichols.

First responders found smoke and flames coming from the one-and-a-half story house. All occupants were able to exit the house prior to the arrival of the fire department.

Investigators determined the cause and origin of the fire as intentionally set.&nbsp; As a result of the investigation police arrested 27-year-old Esther J. Blair of Topeka on requested charges of Arson.

The total dollar loss from the incident was approximately $30,000. There were no injuries reported. The home did not have working smoke detectors, according to Nichols.

Woman accused of intentionally starting Kansas house fire

JOHNSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities continue investigating a deadly shooting that left 15-year-old Brianna Rachelle Higgins of Lawrence dead, according to Olathe Police Sergeant John Moncayo.

Officers on scene assisted with bringing Higgins into the hospital for life-saving measures, but she was pronounced deceased.

Police determined the shooting occurred near the 16900 block of West 127th&nbsp;Street.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Police have not reported an arrest or suspect information.

Investigation continues in shooting death of 15-year-old Kan. girl 

SALINE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities have taken a school district employee into custody in Salina.

On Monday, detectives from the Newton Police Department, assisted by detectives and officers from the Salina Police Department, made contact with an employee at Lakewood Middle School, 1135 Lakewood Circle in Salina, according to a media release Salina Police. 

The employee is identified as 35-year-old Ryan Brungardt, according to the Saline County booking report. He is a social studies teacher at Lakewood, <a href="https://www.305lakewood.com/our_school/staff_directory">according to the school web site.</a>

&nbsp;Newton Police detectives were following up on a crime that was allegedly committed in Newton by Brungardt, according to Newton Police Deputy Chief Scott Powell.

Newton Police officers had a search warrant for his phone, however, when officers attempted to execute the warrant, Brungardt tried to destroy his phone, according to Powell.

"The suspect tried to destroy the phone, which punctured the lithium battery, which apparently started a fire," Powell said.&nbsp;

At that point, Brungardt was placed under arrest and later transported to the Salina Police Department. According to the Saline County booking report Brungardt is being held on requested charges of&nbsp;Aggravated arson; No substantial risk to bodily harm, Aggravated robbery, Battery on Law enforcement officer; Physical contact with county or city officer on duty and Interfere w a Law Enforcement Officer; Conceal/destroy fel evidence

The Salina Police Department believes there is no active threat to any students or facility of USD 305.

Police arrest Salina middle school teacher at school

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating one of their own after a weekend arrest.

On January 28, Maize Police arrested a Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office supervisor for a misdemeanor traffic offenses including driving under the influence, according to the Sedgwick County Sheriff's office.

Lieutenant Richard Gerdsen, 42, was operating his personally owned vehicle while off duty when the incident occurred. Lt. Gerdsen has been employed by the Sheriff’s Office for 17 years.

Lt. Gerdsen has been relieved of duty pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

Kansas sheriff's supervisor accused of DUI

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement continue to investigate the theft of the Jackie Robinson statue that occurred early January 19 from a public park in Wichita.

According to Wichita Police Lt. Aaron Moses, investigators from the Wichita Police Property Crimes Bureau worked all weekend following up on leads and information they have uncovered. 

With the assistance of the police Field Community Response Teams, investigators were able to locate and recover the truck believed to be used in the theft of the statue.

Detectives are continuing to follow promising leads and are confident will result in an arrest of the suspects responsible for this theft.

We are still asking the public for help in bringing the people responsible for this horrible act into custody.

The statue honors the first player to break Major League Baseball's color barrier in 1947. Surveillance video was released of two people hauling the sculpture away in the dark. Wichita police said in a Facebook post that it went missing Thursday morning.

The statue was cut at the ankles to be removed. All that remained of the statue Friday were Robinson's feet.

The Wichita Metro Crime Commission offered a reward Friday of up to $2,500 for tips leading to arrests and another $5,000 for tips that lead to the statue's recovery.

Police recover truck used in theft of statue from Kansas park

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged sex crime and have reported an arrest.

Just after 4a.m. Friday, police arrested 26-year-old Jacob Thompson of Ogden in the 200 block of E. 9th Street in Junction City, Kansas, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 Thompson was arrested on a requested charge of rape. He is being held on a issued a total bond of $250,000, according to the RCPD.

Thompson has two previous convictions for burglary, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Emoni Shears, 14, and Jhiquez Roberts, 19, both of Wichita were later pronounced deceased at the hospital. 

Detectives and patrol officers immediately began investigating this case and following up on leads. Later Saturday, police&nbsp;arrested a 14-year-old from Wichita on requested charges of felony murder and one count of juvenile in possession of a firearm. 

Homicide investigators continue their work to determine what led to this tragic shooting. The investigation has led police to believe that all parties involved in this incident knew each other and were meeting at the location of the shooting.

14-year-old accused of killing two Kansas teens

&nbsp;JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on drug allegations.

Just after 7:30a.m. Jan. 24, a Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on a Nissan Altima near 150th and Q. Road for a traffic infraction, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

 The deputy located illegal drug contraband on the passenger and inside the vehicle. The passenger, Steven Ralph Barker, 61, of Topeka, was arrested and transported to the Jackson County Jail.

He was booked into the Jail on requested charges that include possession of methamphetamine, possession of a hallucinogenic drug,  possession of drug paraphernalia, transporting an open container and trafficking contraband into a corrections facility.

Sheriff: Passenger in Kan. traffic stop couldn't hide drugs

SEDGWICK COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating a fatal deputy-involved shooting that occurred early Thursday have identified the man who died as 43-year-old Larry Armour of Wichita, according to the agency.

At around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night, officers from the Wichita Police Department (WPD) initiated a vehicle pursuit near East Bayley and Schweiter Drive after they located a suspect operating a vehicle that was reported stolen at knifepoint earlier in the night.

The vehicle’s driver was identified as Armour.&nbsp; The pursuit ended near East Harry St. and Green St., and Armour fled on foot.

A tactical team, comprised of both officers from the WPD, deputies from the SCSO, and crisis negotiators, quickly responded to the residence. Just before 1 a.m., members of the tactical team arrived on scene. Negotiations with Armour were attempted. Just after 3 a.m., a deputy from SCSO observed Armour through a window, standing over the innocent resident threatening him with a large knife and shouting that he would kill him. The deputy fired one shot striking Armour, and ending the hostage incident.

Armour has a&nbsp; previous felony conviction for drugs and had been on parole since 2018, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections. On January 12, Wichita police arrested him on a requested charge of aggravated robbery and flee or attempt to elude&nbsp; police, according to Sedgwick County Arrest records.&nbsp;

 This expensive piece of equipment was used as a traffic calming device to help keep neighborhoods safer. The sign was set to alert drivers of their speed as you pass by. 

It would flash red and blues the driver was traveling faster than they should be. It does not take photos, it is not used for enforcement, it was simply there for drivers and others to check their speed as they entered an area of reduced posted speed limits. 

This sign also helped cut back on traffic citations.
