HAMILTON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating three suspect for alleged theft.

Just after 8p.m. Sunday, Colorado authorities alerted the Hamilton County Sheriffs Office that a stolen tiny house was possibly headed towards Coolidge Kansas, according to a media release.

Deputies located the tiny house at Scoular Grain,&nbsp;12501 West, US-50 Scenic, in Coolidge. Three men were attempting to install lights on the tiny house. Deputies arrested them on a requested charge of possession of stolen property. Deputies also recovered a stolen trailer and bobcat.&nbsp;

Kansas deputies find stolen tiny house, make 3 arrests

BUFFALO, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri man has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for his role in the death of a woman who authorities said was kept in a cage and dismembered.

James Phelps, 60, entered an Alford plea Friday to first-degree murder, kidnapping and abandonment of a corpse in the death of 33-year-old Cassie Rainwater, The Springfield News-Leader&nbsp;<a href="https://www.news-leader.com/story/news/local/ozarks/2023/04/28/man-charged-in-cassidy-rainwater-death-enters-plea-sentenced-to-life/70164196007/">reported</a>. Under an Alford plea, Phelps does not admit guilt but acknowledges enough evidence exists to convict him.

Phelps and Timothy Norton&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/missouri-51f93eea7f79e9792164414092e581f6">were charged</a>&nbsp;in September 2021 after DNA tests identified the remains found at Phelps’ home near Lebanon as Rainwater, Dallas County officials said at the time.

Authorities said the men were initially arrested on a kidnapping charge after the FBI received a tip that photos of Rainwater partially nude and in a cage were found on Phelps' phone.

Dallas County Sheriff Scott Rice has said other photos showed Rainwater's body had been disemboweled and dismembered.

Some of her remains were later found in a freezer, while others were located on a nearby property.

Rainwater was reported missing in August 2021 by a woman who said she was last seen with Phelps.

Phelps twice told investigators that Rainwater was staying with him but she had left for Colorado, according to court records.

Phelps’ house later&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/fires-kidnapping-missouri-arson-5552c41ab88e9dac352f2143ac8aec71">burned to the ground</a>&nbsp;in what investigators determined was arson.

Norton, who faces the same charges as Phelps, is scheduled for a court hearing on Tuesday.

Man sentenced in death of caged, dismembered woman

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal shooting have made an arrest.

Just before 4a.m. Sunday, police were dispatched to a shooting that took place in the 2800 block of East Stadium Drive, according to Officer Juan Rebolledo.

At the scene, officers located a man later identified as 36-year-old Christian Santiago, of Wichita, in the front passenger seat of a white SUV deceased.

Investigators identified 47-year-old Adonis, C. Andrews as a suspect, and he was located Sunday in the 4300 block of Wood Hollow Court. He was arrested and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on requested charges of First Degree Murder, Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Burglary, Aggravated Robbery, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Distribute Controlled Substance, and 3 Warrants (x3).&nbsp; The two men knew each other and this was not a random incident, according to Rebolledo.

Andrews has a previous conviction for criminal threat and three previous  drug convictions, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections. He had been out of prison since December.

A teenage girl was able to escape from a man who allegedly attempted to kidnap her as she checked out at an east Salina grocery store Friday night.

Just after 9p.m., a 17-year-old girl had just finished her shift at Dillons, 1235 E. Cloud Street in Salina, and was purchasing an item at the self-checkout when a man approached her, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester

The man allegedly displayed a large knife in a sheath on his belt and then pulled the knife out partway. He then allegedly grabbed the girl's hand and attempted to get her out of the store. She was able to slip out of his grasp and run from him.

The victim went to another store employee who called police.

The man was described as a white male wearing a blue stocking cap, blue jeans, and white shoes. He was last seen pushing a gray bicycle away from the store. Police believe they have identified the man, but have not yet made an arrest, according to Forrester.

Police: Kan. teen employee foils alleged attempted kidnapping

KANSAS CITY —Two men in Kansas City for the NFL Draft face burglary and&nbsp; other charges for stealing NFL jerseys for top draft picks from areas requiring special NFL Draft access credentials, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.

Jude Ocanas, 19, Los Angeles, California and Eric F. Lambkins, 41, of Marietta, Georgia each face Burglary 2nd Degree, Stealing, and a misdemeanor count of Trespass 1st Degree.

According to court records filed Saturday, NFL officials reported Friday that three NFL jerseys were stolen from the Nike Room of the NFL draft. 

KCPD detectives reviewed video from security cameras that showed the defendants entering areas early in the morning on Friday, including the Talent Waiting Room, which is adjacent to the Nike Room. 

NFL officials advised that the defendants had credentials for the NFL Draft but not for those areas and not at that time of the morning. Three jerseys, valued by the NFL at $350 each, were stolen. One was a blue Dallas Cowboy's jersey, a second was a red San Francisco 49ers jersey and the third was a Minnesota Vikings jersey. Each jersey had a No. 1 on the back and were available for first-round picks for those teams.&nbsp;

The defendants, according to court records, were arrested later Friday as they were attempting to leave for their home states. Two of the jerseys were found in their luggage.

ROME (AP) — Pope Francis on Sunday revealed that a secret peace “mission” in Russia's war in Ukraine was under way, though he gave no details, and said the Vatican is willing to help facilitate the return of Ukrainian children taken to Russia during the war.

“I’m available to do anything,” Francis said during an airborne press conference en route home from Hungary. “There’s a mission that’s not public that’s underway; when it’s public I’ll talk about it.”

Francis gave no details when asked whether he spoke about peace initiatives during his talks in Budapest this weekend with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban or the representative of the Russian Orthodox Church in Hungary.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ukrainian-children-russia-7493cb22c9086c6293c1ac7986d85ef6">Deportations of Ukrainian children</a>&nbsp;have been a concern since Russia invaded Ukraine last year. Francis said the Holy See had already helped mediate some prisoner exchanges and would do “all that is humanly possible” to reunite families.

“All human gestures help. Gestures of cruelty don’t help,” Francis said.

The International Criminal Court in March&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/icc-putin-war-crimes-ukraine-9857eb68d827340394960eccf0589253">issued an arrest warrant</a>&nbsp;for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia’s children’s commissioner, accusing them of war crimes for abducting children from Ukraine. Russia has denied any wrongdoing, contending the children were moved for their safety.

Last week Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal met with Francis at the Vatican and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ukraine-pope-francis-russia-abducted-children-c2dedb2e8440aa458bfe3532d42a73b4">asked him to help return Ukrainian children</a>&nbsp;taken following the Russian invasion.

“I asked His Holiness to help us return home Ukrainians, Ukrainian children who are detained, arrested, and criminally deported to Russia,″ Shmyhal told the Foreign Press Association after the audience.

Francis recalled that the Holy See had facilitated some prisoner exchanges, working through embassies, and was open to Ukraine’s request to reunite Ukrainian children with their families.

The prisoner exchanges “went well. I think it could go well also for this. It’s important,” he said of the family reunifications. “The Holy See is available to do it because it’s the right thing,” he added. “We have to do all that is humanly possible.” ___

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man after his child was found in possession of illegal narcotics at school.

Just after 1pm Wednesday, a Sheriff’s Office deputy/school resource officer and members of the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office’s Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) responded to an elementary school in southwest Shawnee County after a student was found to have inadvertently brought illegal narcotics to school, in a backpack. During the investigation, it was discovered that the student found items in his backpack that did not belong to him and immediately told a school staff member. The staff member then notified school administration, who promptly contacted law enforcement. Deputies went to the child's home in the 6500 BLock of SW 21st Street in Topeka and arrested the father of the student identified as 39-year-old Christopher G. Hernandez of Topeka,

&nbsp;Hernandez was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on charges of possession of a hallucinogenic drug and endangering a child.

Just before 6p.m. Thursday, the Lyon County Emergency Communications Center received multiple reports of shots fired toward a vehicle near East 9th Avenue and Whittier Street in Empiria, according to Police Captain Ray Mattas.

Upon arrival, officers located evidence of shots being fired. They located the vehicle believed to have been shot at and the victim who were unharmed. 

Investigators determined 48-year-old Michael Bradley shot at 67-year-old Samuel Gardenhire.&nbsp;Bradley then ran from the area. Police located him a short distance away and arrested him. 

Officers also found a firearm in the area a short time later. 

Bradley is being held on requested charges of Attempted First Degree Murder, Criminal Discharge of a Firearm, Aggravated Assault, Criminal Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Possession of Methamphetamine, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Bradley has been registered as a Kansas offender since 2011 for a conviction on conspiracy on sale or distribution of a controlled substance.&nbsp; Has has additional convictions for violation of the offender registration, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

OSKALOOSA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas man who spent 16 years in prison for a rape and murder he didn't commit will receive $7.5 million from the county where he was arrested and convicted of the crime.

Jefferson County commissioners approved the settlement last week with Floyd Bledsoe, who was released from prison in 2015 after DNA evidence showed he could not have been the killer of 14-year-old Camille Arfmann in Oskaloosa.

Bledsoe will receive $1.5 million initially, with the rest to be paid over the next 10 years, The Kansas City Star&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/crime/article274828306.html#storylink=cpy">reported</a>.

Bledsoe, who is now 46, was 23 when he was convicted in 2000 of killing the girl. He was arrested even though his brother, Tom, confessed to the killing in 1999, turned himself in and led authorities to the girl's body.

According to&nbsp;<a href="https://newsroom.ap.org/d8e00f2ed6d24f40a954f56d3a8d944e">a lawsuit</a>&nbsp;Floyd Bledsoe filed in 2016, Jefferson County authorities persuaded Tom Bledsoe to recant his confession and “framed” his brother by hiding evidence of his innocence.

In 2015, DNA testing revealed Tom Bledsoe was the likely source of sperm found in the victim. Tom Bledsoe died by suicide that year after writing a note again confessing to killing Arfmann.

The charges against Floyd Bledsoe&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/c30142071892457aa0c3b46ba2e798db">were dismissed</a>&nbsp;and he was freed from prison that year.

One of Bledsoe’s attorneys, Russell Ainsworth of Loevy &amp; Loevy in Chicago, said Jefferson County was facing up to $40 million in liability if the case went to trial.

Jefferson County Commissioner Richard Malm said the county's annual budget is about $20 million and the commission would have had to propose a bond if Bledsoe had not agreed to have the payment spread over 10 years.

In 2019, the state&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/93cecdea95494971aa75d8729ff3ae53">agreed to pay</a>&nbsp;Bledsoe $1.03 million under a mistaken conviction law.

Wrongfully convicted Kansas man to get $7.5 million payment

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on multiple charges involving children and drugs.

On Tuesday, members of the Topeka Police Department Narcotics Unit served a search warrant in the 1800 Block SW Burnett Road related to an ongoing investigation, according to Police Lt. Ronnie Connell.

&nbsp;Officers located marijuana, LSD, Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), Psilocybin, magic mushrooms), firearms and drug paraphernalia.

As a result, police arrested 57-year-old Jeffery Everett and 37-year-old Jacqulyne Jones on requested charges of Contributing to child misconduct, Aggravated child endangerment, Possession of hallucinogenic drug and Possession of drug paraphernalia.

ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new allegations after an arrest.

Just before 3p.m. Wednesday, an unlawful entry was made into a residence in the 500 block North 5th Street in Atchison, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson. 

A suspect had entered the residence through a front door, grabbed a playstation, and ran from the residence. The residence was occupied at the time but there was no contact between the resident and the suspect.&nbsp;

The investigation led police to 28-year-old Darius Fleming who was taken into custody at 8:00AM on Thursday morning at 5th and Santa Fe on a Kansas Department of Corrections detain order for parole violation and requested charges of aggravated burglary and theft. 

He has two previous convictions for theft and had been listed as an absconder April 21, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating a domestic disturbance have a suspect in custody.

Tanner Thompson, 27, was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections Thursday evening, according to online jail records.

Just before 11a.m. Tuesday, deputies with the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the 3800 block of SE Croco Road for a domestic disturbance, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

At the residence, deputies discovered a woman and an infant victim. Both were transported by American Medical Response (AMR) to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

At 1:15pm, law enforcement officers attempted to make contact with a suspect identified as Thompson, who was believed to still be inside the residence. 

Southbound SE Croco Road was shut down to one lane of travel during that time period. At 2pm, officers entered and cleared the residence. No person was located inside the residence.

The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office asked the community’s assistance Thompson. He had an active felony warrant for his arrest. He is being held on requested charges of Criminal Threat,&nbsp;Aggravated Endangering A Child; Reckless Situation, battery, assault and&nbsp;Domestic battery; Knowing or reckless bodily harm to family/person in dating relationship.

Authorities have not released details on his arrest.

Kan. man accused of injuring woman, infant is in custody

Manhattan&nbsp;–&nbsp;A Manhattan man died Friday following an arrest and confinement in the Riley County Jail, according to a statement from the Riley County Police Department.

Just before 2a.m. Thursday, Joseph Varvel, 25, was detained in the 300 block of N. 14th&nbsp;Street in Manhattan for suspicious activity. 

While speaking with officers, he ran and was later found in possession of cocaine. Officers on scene called for Riley County EMS (RCEMS) assistance at 1:50 a.m. after Varvel complained of breathing issues while in custody. RCEMS arrived on scene at 1:56 a.m. and cleared Varvel at 2:05 a.m.

Officers then arrested Varvel on requested charges of&nbsp; possession of cocaine, possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia, and interference with LEO and transported him to the Riley County Jail. 

RCEMS was called at 3:32 a.m. when Varvel became physically ill. His condition quickly deteriorated and Corrections Officers began lifesaving measures. RCEMS arrived at 3:41 a.m. and continued lifesaving measures. RCEMS then transported Varvel to Via Christi in Manhattan at 4:03 a.m. where he arrived at 4:12 a.m. and was pronounced dead at 4:47 a.m.

Per state statute, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) will be the lead agency investigating&nbsp;the death. An autopsy will be conducted.

FINNEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are asking the public for help to locate two southwest Kansas drug suspects.

In February police arrested&nbsp;48-year-old Kelly Deremus and 31-year-old Shelby Deremus after a high-risk traffic stop.

Officers of the Garden City Police Department and the Garden City/Finney County Joint Drug Task Force conducted the stop in the 3400 block of E. Spruce Street in Garden City, according to a media release.

Officers made contact with the couple as part of an ongoing investigation.&nbsp; Officers had prior knowledge that Kelly Deremus had an active warrant. 

After further investigation, a search of the vehicle was conducted. Multiple narcotics were seized to include fentanyl, methamphetamine, marijuana, and counterfeit oxycodone pills. 

Officers arrested both at the scene. Due to the location and known criminal history of Kelly Deremus, Victor Ornelas Elementary School and Charles O. Stones Intermediate Center were placed on lockdown for a few minutes as a precaution.

Kelly Deremus was in custody on requested charges that include Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Stimulants, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Ignition Interlock and the Finney County District Court warrant along with Fleeing and Eluding/Driving Under the Influence. Shelby Deremus was held on requested charges of Possession of Stimulants and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Police ask for help to locate 2 SW Kansas drug suspects

JACKSON COUNTY —A man involved in a fatal head-on crash in Kansas is being held in the Jackson County Jail facing multiple allegations.

Just before 11a.m. Wednesday, the Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Dodge Avenger driven by&nbsp;Ayinde-Jriel James, 44, Fort Worth, Texas, was northbound on U.S. 75 two miles north of Holton at excess speeds.-

The driver began to pass numerous vehicles without sufficient clearance and struck a southbound 2010 Mercury Grand Marquis driven by Melinda J.&nbsp;Wareham, 74, Whiting. The vehicles collided head-on, according to Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse.

Wareham was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Frontier Forensics.&nbsp; 

The KHP arrested James on requested charges of involuntary manslaughter, driving under the influence, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and reckless driving, according to Morse.

North and southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 75 were closed with traffic rerouted until after 2:30p.m.

 </figure>JACKSON COUNTY —A man involved in a fatal head-on crash in Kansas is being held in the Jackson County Jail facing multiple allegations.Just before 11a.m. Wednesday, the Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Dodge Avenger driven by&nbsp;Ayinde-Jriel James, 44, Fort Worth, Texas, was northbound on U.S. 75 two miles north of Holton at excess speeds.-<figure>

 </figure>The driver began to pass numerous vehicles without sufficient clearance and struck a southbound 2010 Mercury Grand Marquis driven by Melinda J.&nbsp;Wareham, 74, Whiting. The vehicles collided head-on, according to Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse.Wareham was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Frontier Forensics.&nbsp; The KHP arrested James on requested charges of involuntary manslaughter, driving under the influence, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and reckless driving, according to Morse.North and southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 75 were closed with traffic rerouted until after 2:30p.m.

Driver accused of DUI in head-on crash that killed Kan. woman

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a domestic disturbance and continue working to locate a suspect.&nbsp;

At 1:15pm, law enforcement officers attempted to make contact with a male suspect, who was believed to still be inside the residence. 

The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office is asking the community’s assistance in locating Tanner J. Thompson, 27, of Topeka. Thompson has an active felony warrant for his arrest and is facing additional charges from Tuesday's domestic disturbance incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office (785)251-2200 immediately.

 </figure>SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a domestic disturbance and continue working to locate a suspect.&nbsp;Just before 11a.m. Tuesday, deputies with the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the 3800 block of SE Croco Road for a domestic disturbance, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.At the residence, deputies discovered a woman and an infant victim. Both were transported by American Medical Response (AMR) to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.<figure>

Southbound SE Croco Road was shut down to one lane of travel during that time period. At 2pm, officers entered and cleared the residence. Search continues for Kan. man who injured woman, infant

JOHNSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a possible road-rage shooting and have made an arrest.

Just before 7p.m. Tuesday, police responded to 87th Street and Lackman on the report of someone in a vehicle shooting towards at least one other vehicle, according to a statement from Lenexa Police.

As officers were on the scene speaking to the victim, who was not injured and did not know the suspect, the suspect vehicle, a black Dodge Charger, was seen driving in the area. 

Officers tried to stop the Charger however it fled west on 87th Street and onto northbound I-435 highway. 

Lenexa officers pursued this vehicle into Kansas before losing sight of it on eastbound Interstate 70 near Interstate 635 highway.&nbsp; Officers requested assistance from other police agencies as they pursued the suspect vehicle across jurisdictions, and those agencies were responding to assist.

Just after 3p.m.&nbsp; Wednesday, Lenexa detectives attempted to contact an adult male suspect in the 8900 block of Allman as part of this investigation.

 The suspect ran but was captured a short time later. A firearm was recovered, and the black Dodge Charger was located. The suspect, whose name has not been released, is being held in the Johnson County Adult Detention Center to await charges.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating damage at the historical society and have made an arrest.

Just after 11a.m. Wednesday, officers filed a report for criminal damage to property and criminal trespass at the Riley County Historical Society Museum, 2309 Claflin Road in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The museum reported a known male suspect entered the museum by breaking a window and additional items inside. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $1,980. 

Police arrested 34-year-old Arthur Mickey Jr. of Ogden on a probable cause offenses of criminal damage to property and criminal trespass. Mickey Jr. remains jailed on $3,000 bond.

Suspect jailed for alleged damage at historical society museum

ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a registered Kansas sex offender on new allegations.

On Tuesday, police arrested 53-year-old David W. Chapman of Lancaster on a District Court warrant for violation of a protective order and District and Municipal Court warrants failure to appear in court, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Chapman has previous convictions for aggravated criminal sodomy involving a child under the age of 14, perjury and trafficking contraband into a correctional facility, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections. He has been a registered offender since 2013.

In November, police arrested Chapman for alleged failure to appear. In January and&nbsp; April of 2022, he was in custody for alleged bond violations, according to online jail records.
