RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged child sex crimes.

On Wednesday, police&nbsp;filed a report for sexual exploitation of a child in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 Mitchell Simmons, 38, of Manhattan was arrested on requested charges of of sexual exploitation of a child; possess media of a child &lt; 18 and breach of privacy; install/use concealed camcorder without consent. 

Simmons was issued no bond and was confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this report. Police released no additional details about the alleged crime.

Sexual exploitation: Manhattan man accused of hiding recording device

Just after 11p.m. Wednesday, officers filed a report for disorderly conduct and public nudity in the 1100 block of Moro Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department report.

 Officers listed a 41-year-old male as the suspect when it was reported he was acting aggressive, belligerent, and pulled his pants down in public. 

Benjamin Lewis, 41, of Manhattan was arrested in connection on requested charges of nudity in a public place and disorderly conduct. Lewis was issued a total bond of $500 and was still in custody early Thursday, according to the RCPD.

Manhattan man accused of public indecency 

KIOWA COUNTY, CO. — Human remains found in Kiowa County, Colorado on Sept. 20 were positively identified as two women from Kansas and a suspect is in custody.

On Wednesday, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) reported the Kiowa County Coroner’s Office confirmed the remains belong to Linda Estrada, 44, and Amy Ford, 39, both of Emporia, Kansas, according to a media release.

An arrest warrant was issued for a suspect in this case identified as 36-year-old&nbsp; Phillip Lieurence. He being held at a jail in Emporia on unrelated charges including Aggravated Assault; Use of Deadly Weapon• Agg Battery While DUI, Distribute Marijuana 25-450 grams, Reckless Driving, Flee or Attempt to Elude LEO; motor vehicle accident or damage property, Reckless Driving, Duty of Driver Dmg Unattnd Veh, DUI, Agg Battery;intent physical contact weap, Criminal Damage to Property.

The Emporia Police Department began their investigation in the case September 11, after a family member reported Linda Estrada as missing.

Police learned Estrada and Amy Ford had been together in Colorado the previous weekend. Amy was reported missing shortly after the investigation began.

Emporia Police Investigations Division utilized cellular phone technology, along with security videos and solid police work to track the&nbsp; the two woman throughout Colorado. The investigation led detectives to portions of eastern Colorado and western Kansas.

Authorities in Colorado spent 5 days searching with the aid of K9s, airplanes, drones and ground searches. On September 18, Emporia detectives traveled to eastern Colorado where they coordinated with local authorities. Just before 4p.m. CDT, Wednesday, the bodies were found in rural eastern Colorado.

The Kiowa County Sheriff's office is in charge of the homicide&nbsp; investigation in conjunction with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.&nbsp;

Police ID suspect after bodies of 2 Kan. women found in Colorado 

RENO COUNTY— A Kansas man is awaiting extradition to Kansas from Colorado in connection with the homicide of another Hutchinson man whose body was found in Harvey County last week.

The body of 31-year-old Tyler Lee Ford of Hutchinson was found in East Park in Harvey County on Sept. 17. It was determined Ford died from a gunshot wound.

A joint homicide investigation began involving numerous officers and detectives from the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office, Reno County Sheriff’s Office, and the Hutchinson Police Department. A person of interest was identified, which led the investigation to a residence in the City of Hutchinson. A search warrant was executed at this residence, and evidence of the crime was discovered.

Twenty-eight-year-old Clancy Nelson Jr. of Hutchinson was identified as a suspect in the death of&nbsp; Ford. Law enforcement officers were able to determine that Nelson was in Aurora, Colorado. An arrest warrant was issued for Nelson, and with cooperation from the Aurora Police Department, Nelson was located and taken into custody without incident.

Nelson is currently in custody in Adams County, Colorado, pending extradition to Hutchinson, Kansas on requested charges of Second-Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery, and Aggravated Assault.

Suspect jailed in Colo. after body found on dry Kan. lake bed

LABETTE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating the death of a woman whose body was found in a field on Sunday have made an arrest.

Just after 2:30p.m. Sunday, a man placed a 911 call after discovering the body later identified as 28-year-old Kylie Caldwell of Parsons in a field one half mile west of the intersection of 20000 Road and Ness Road in rural Labette County, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

On Monday the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), the Labette County Sheriff’s Office, and the Parsons Police Department arrested 53-year-old Derrick W. Curry, 53, of Parsons, on requested charges for interference with the judicial process; to conceal or destroy evidence of a crime and he was booked into jail.

&nbsp;On Tuesday, KBI agents and investigators executed search warrants at Curry’s apartment at 2626 Kimball Avenue&nbsp; in Parsons, and on his vehicle. 

On Wednesday morning an arrest warrant was issued for Curry for second-degree murder in connection to the death of Caldwell. It was served to him while he was in custody at the jail. Curry and Caldwell were acquaintances, according to the sheriff's office.

Just before 10p.m. Tuesday, a 21-year-old man called the Riley County Police Department Communications Center to report he had been tackled by an unknown suspect while the victim was attempting to deliver food in the 1000 block of Quivira Circle, according to a media release from the RCPD.&nbsp;

 Officers immediately arrived in the area and began canvassing the scene and the suspect returned hours later. He fled from officers but was successfully apprehended in the 1800 block of Hunting Avenue without incident after a successful track by RCPD K9 Monster.&nbsp;

Landen Bearce, 21, of Manhattan, was arrested on probable cause offenses of attempted robbery and interference with law enforcement officers.&nbsp;

On Monday, officers filed a report for attempted robbery in the 1800 block of Hunting Avenue when a 21-year-old victim reported an unknown suspect tried to forcefully take items from him while delivering food.&nbsp;

Bearce remains jailed held on a $50,000 bond, according to the RCPD.&nbsp;

RCPD: Suspect attempted to rob food delivery drivers

JACKSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

Just after 3p.m.&nbsp;September 23, a Sheriff’s Deputy stopped to assist a motorist with a 2016 Ford Focus on 158th Road and U.S. Highway 75, according to Sheriff&nbsp; Tim Morse. 

Deputies arrested the driver, Tonia Nicole Carlson, 49, of Wahpeton, North Dakota on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Morse. She remains in custody on a $50,000 bond, according to online jail records.

Kan. deputy helped woman with car trouble, arrested her

BROWN COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a teen driver for multiple allegations in connection with a weekend 2-vehicle crash.

Just before 11:30 p.m.&nbsp; Sunday, a sheriff's deputy on routine patrol near U.S. 75 and U.S. 36 Highways encountered a vehicle driving with defective headlights and emitting sparks from the undercarriage, according to Brown County Sheriff John Merchant.

The eastbound a Toyota 4-Runner was stopped in&nbsp; Fairview and appeared that it&nbsp; had recently been involved in an accident. The deputy initiated a traffic stop and&nbsp; made contact with the driver identified as 18-year-old Nixon Castro of Hiawatha.&nbsp; 

Approximately 2 minutes after the stop, dispatch then notified officers that a rollover accident was reported west of Fairview.&nbsp; According to information received from investigating the accident,&nbsp; a Toyota Yaris was eastbound on US 36&nbsp; west of Fairview when a Toyota 4 Runner, also eastbound&nbsp; side swiped the Yaris on the drivers side of the vehicle causing damage to both vehicles.

This caused the&nbsp; Yaris to leave the roadway and roll .&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The driver of the Yaris identified as 47-year-old Eduardo Ganzales was not injured but the two other occupants had non life threatening injuries.&nbsp; 

They refused medical treatment.&nbsp;&nbsp; The Toyota 4 Runner&nbsp; also left the roadway traveling through a soybean field and&nbsp; destroyed some field fencing and&nbsp; continued east on U.S. 36 until it was stopped by the deputy.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

There were no injuries reported in the Toyota 4 Runner.&nbsp; The deputy arrested Castro&nbsp; on requested charges of DUI, Transport Open Container, Reckless Driving and Failure to Report an Accident. He remains in custody, according to online jail records.

Kansas teen driver jailed after SUV sideswipes car

MCPHERSON COUNTY —An elementary school student was injured in an accident Tuesday morning in McPherson.

Just before 10a.m., police&nbsp; responded to Roosevelt Elementary School,&nbsp;800 S Walnut Street in McPherson, where&nbsp; a 7-year-old student was struck in the arm by an arrow on the playground, according to a media release.

McPherson Emergency Medical Services and Fire Rescue responded, provided medical assistance, and transported the child to McPherson Center for Health. 

The victim was later transferred to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, in stable condition. Officers arrested a 31-year-old man, identified as&nbsp; Nehemiah Scott, according to online booking records, who shot a bow and arrow in the area, resulting in a stray arrow striking the student. 

Scott is being held on requested charges of Aggravated Battery and Aggravated Child Endangerment on a bond of $12,500.00.

It is unlawful in McPherson to operate an air rifle, bow and arrow, slingshot or BB gun except within the confines of a building or structure from which the projectiles cannot escape.

Arrest made after Kan. elementary school student struck by arrow

Just after 9:30p.m. Monday, police arrested 24-year-old Nicholas A. Seeman of Lincoln Nebraska&nbsp; on a Riley County District Court warrant&nbsp; for multiple alleged sex crimes, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

He is being held on a $300,000 bond on requested charges that include rape; Offender is 18 or older and victim is &lt; 14, aggravated indecent liberties w child; Offender =&gt;18 fondle child &lt;14; aggravated indecent liberties w/ child; Intercourse with child 14 &lt; 16 YOA; sexual exploitation of child; offender&gt;18 employment of child&lt;14; indecent solicitation of a child; Sex act with a child &gt;14&lt;16; aggravated indecent liberties w/ child; Intercourse with child 14 &lt; 16 YOA; criminal sodomy; With a child &gt;14 YOA and &lt;16; sexual exploitation of a child; employment of child&lt;18 and aggravated indecent liberties w/ child; Fondling a child 14&lt;16 YOA

The crimes were reported to RCPD in March 2023.&nbsp; &nbsp;Seeman was convicted of sexual assault and has been listed as a registered sex offender since September of 2022, according to the Nebraska sex offender registry.

Sex offender jailed in Manhattan for multiple alleged sex crimes

KANSAS CITY —What started as a car stop in ended with a home invasion suspect in custody in a home near Kansas City.&nbsp;

Just after 1a.m. Sept. 24, Sheriff Deputies tried to stop a vehicle with no license plates in Randolph(MO), thirteen miles northeast of Kansas City, according to the Clay County(MO) Sheriff's office.

The driver fled traveling north on Interstate 435 to Interstate 35, and then north to 69 Highway. 

Excelsior Springs Missouri Police&nbsp;successfully deployed tire deflation devices as the suspect vehicle drove into town. The vehicle was losing its rear tire and eventually pulled into a driveway in the 700 block of Old Orchard Street.

The suspect later identified as 37-year-old Lewis J. Long ran from the vehicle into a residential backyard and then onto the home's back deck, where several occupants of the home were standing. 

Long forced his way through the people on the deck and into the home, where he hid in a corner. 

Deputies and police officers won the hide-and-seek game, taking custody of him and pulling him out of the house. The homeowners said they had no idea who he was. Long&nbsp; complained of chest pains and was evaluated at the hospital before being cleared to come to the Clay County Detention Center.

No one was injured in the incident. Long is being held on requested charges of resisting arrest by fleeing. Additional charges are expected.

 </figure>KANSAS CITY —What started as a car stop in ended with a home invasion suspect in custody in a home near Kansas City.&nbsp;Just after 1a.m. Sept. 24, Sheriff Deputies tried to stop a vehicle with no license plates in Randolph(MO), thirteen miles northeast of Kansas City, according to the Clay County(MO) Sheriff's office.The driver fled traveling north on Interstate 435 to Interstate 35, and then north to 69 Highway. Excelsior Springs Missouri Police&nbsp;successfully deployed tire deflation devices as the suspect vehicle drove into town. The vehicle was losing its rear tire and eventually pulled into a driveway in the 700 block of Old Orchard Street.The suspect later identified as 37-year-old Lewis J. Long ran from the vehicle into a residential backyard and then onto the home's back deck, where several occupants of the home were standing. Long forced his way through the people on the deck and into the home, where he hid in a corner. Deputies and police officers won the hide-and-seek game, taking custody of him and pulling him out of the house. The homeowners said they had no idea who he was. Long&nbsp; complained of chest pains and was evaluated at the hospital before being cleared to come to the Clay County Detention Center.No one was injured in the incident. Long is being held on requested charges of resisting arrest by fleeing. Additional charges are expected.

Sheriff: Victim dies a week after Kansas City shooting 

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Two Kansas City, Mo., men who led 246, a violent street gang, were sentenced in federal court last week for their roles in a drug-trafficking conspiracy and other violent criminal behavior that included illegal firearms and a drive-by shooting outside a daycare center where children were present.

Ladele D. Smith, also known as “Dellio” and “Dog,” 36, and Roy Franklin, Jr., 33, were sentenced in separate appearances before U.S. District Judge Greg Kays. Smith was sentenced to 35 years in federal prison without parole. Franklin was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison without parole.

On Sept. 15, 2022, Smith and Franklin were found guilty at trial of participating in a conspiracy to distribute heroin, cocaine, oxycodone, and marijuana from Jan. 1, 2011, to Oct. 1, 2019. Smith was also convicted of 15 additional counts that charged him with various drug-trafficking and firearms crimes, including a drive-by shooting and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. Franklin was also convicted of nine additional counts that charged him with various drug-trafficking and firearms crimes, including the drive-by shooting and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.

Co-defendants David J. Duncan, IV, also known as “Deej” or “DJ,” 34, and Gary O. Toombs, 43, both of Kansas City, Mo., also were convicted during the same trial and are scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 26, 2023.

The investigation into the 246 street gang, operating in the Kansas City metropolitan area, began in June 2017. The gang is an alliance of gang members from the 24th, 43rd, and 68th streets of Kansas City, Mo. Smith was identified as a leader of the gang, and Franklin, Duncan and Toombs as members of the gang.

Smith and Duncan are local rap artists who often posted to social media platforms, such as YouTube, with references to the 246 gang. In some of the videos, Smith and others show firearms and large amounts of cash. The social media posts also portrayed Smith and others wearing expensive jewelry, watches, hats, and clothing that depicted 246 gang affiliation.

Smith only made about $300 from his music, according to court documents, but he spent about $54,000 at Halls Department Store between 2017 and 2019, and spent more than $27,000 on rental cars from Enterprise during that time. Those financial records don’t include the money spent on other luxury items (such as clothes, shoes, and accessories) seized by law enforcement from Smith’s residence.

Members of the 246 gang used a residence in the 4400 block of Kensington, which is within 1,000 feet of George Washington Carver Dual Language School, a public elementary school, for gang and drug-trafficking business. No one utilized the house as a primary or permanent residence. On Oct. 2, 2019, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at the house and seized heroin as well as two assault rifles and a stolen vehicle that had been used in a drive-by shooting the previous month. Officers also found a Glock 9mm semi-automatic pistol and a Century Arms International 7.62x39mm pistol under the couch in the living room and a Glock .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol on the kitchen cabinet.

Smith was arrested at his apartment on Oct 2, 2019. Officers searched his residence and found codeine, $31,601 in cash, and jewelry valued at over $40,000.

Duncan was also arrested at his apartment on Oct. 2, 2019. Officers searched his residence and found a Zastava 7.62 x 39mm rifle, a Norinco 7.62 x 39mm rifle, a Glock 9mm semi-automatic pistol, two loaded rifle magazines, and a loaded handgun magazine under the bed in a bedroom. Officers found $7,100 in cash and four bags of pills that contained oxycodone in the living room.

Smith, Franklin and Toombs also were found guilty at trial of participating in a conspiracy to possess firearms in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime.

In addition to the two conspiracies, Smith was found guilty of one count of drive-by shooting, one count of discharging a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, one count of maintaining a drug-involved premises, one count of distributing marijuana, one count of distributing marijuana near a school (within 1,000 feet of George Washington Carver Dual Language School), four counts of distributing heroin, and four counts of distributing heroin near a school (within 1,000 feet of George Washington Carver Dual Language School).

In addition to the two conspiracies, Franklin was found guilty of one count of drive-by shooting, one count of discharging a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, one count of maintaining a drug-involved premises, two counts of distributing marijuana and two counts of distributing marijuana near a school (within 1,000 feet of George Washington Carver Dual Language School).

Duncan also was found guilty of possessing oxycodone the intent to distribute, one count of possessing firearms in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime, and five counts of money laundering related to the purchases of money orders with drug-trafficking proceeds.

Toombs also was found guilty of maintaining a residence for the purpose of manufacturing, distributing, and using controlled substances.

KC street gang leaders sentenced for drug-trafficking, shooting,

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect in connection with theft of a historic church bell near Kansas City.&nbsp;

On Thursday the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office announced charges linked to the theft of a historic church bell in Gunn City, Missouri, approximately 50 miles southeast of Kansas City.

Christopher Longacre, 36, of Garden City Missouri, has been charged with felony theft and possession of a controlled substance. He has also been charged with a misdemeanor for resisting arrest.

On Wednesday, deputies located parts of the historic bell while serving a warrant to Longacre. It had been reported stolen on September 11. The next day, investigators obtained and executed a search warrant for Longacre after getting information he was in possession of the bell. 

When deputies arrived at Longacre’s residence, he fled on foot. Investigators were unable to find any remnants of the bell that day.

On Thursday during a traffic stop, Deputies arrested Longacre on a failure to appear warrant and found pieces of the historic bell during the probable cause search. 

Investigators found Longacre had cut down parts of the bell. They have reason to believe he was trying to scrap the remnants of the bell and sell them. 

The bell is part of a church in Gunn City dating back to 1882. The bell survived a fire in the 1920s that burned down the church when it was a log cabin. It was put back up in the church which is still standing.

Longacre is held at the Cass County Jail on a $25,000 cash-only bond.

Man charged in theft of historic KC-area church bell

ELLIS COUNTY —A Kansas man was found guilty Friday  of pre-meditated first-degree murder after a week-long trial in Ellis County District Court, according to a media release from the county attorney. The jury deliberated for slightly more than two hours,&nbsp;according to a news release from the Ellis County Attorney's Office.

Colby Alan Trickle, 29, Hays, was charged with pre-meditated first-degree murder in the&nbsp;Oct. 31, 2019 shooting death of his 27-year-old wife Kristin Trickle, 27.

The defendant was also charged with falsely reporting information twice to Hays Police Department officers during the investigation. He was arrested in July 2021.

Sentencing for Trickle has yet to be scheduled.&nbsp;

Kansas law requires the defendant to be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for a 50-years for the conviction of premeditated murder in the first degree.

“Sadly, we will never be able to bring Kristen Trickle back. It is my hope however, that this conviction brings some level of comfort and healing to those who knew and loved Kristen," said Ellis County Attorney Robert Anderson in the news release.

“This result is the culmination of a lot of hard work and hours invested by many people devoted to the safety of this community. The diligence, determination, and dedication of our local law enforcement and first responders have led to this moment for Kristen Trickle and her family.”

Jury: Western Kan. man guilty in pre-meditated murder of his wife

KANSAS CITY —A Kansas City-area man was sentenced in federal court this week for two fraud schemes in which he sold unwitting victims rental equipment and real estate that did not belong to him, according to the United State's Attorney.

Jeremy Ace Woods, 46, Independence, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Howard F. Sachs to 17 years in federal prison without parole. The court also ordered Woods to pay $798,021 in restitution to 48 victims and to forfeit to the government $336,150, which represents the proceeds he personally received from the charged conduct in this case.

On Dec. 14, 2022, Woods pleaded guilty to three counts of travel fraud and two counts of wire fraud as part of a rental-equipment scheme and a real estate scheme that victimized at least 48 individuals or businesses.

$1,187,177 Rental Equipment Fraud Scheme

As part of the rental-equipment scheme, Woods stole approximately 96 pieces of rental equipment valued at approximately $999,077 from 25 separate rental companies. He then sold at least 41 pieces of equipment to at least 15 victim buyers from across the Midwest, including buyers from Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. These victim buyers paid Woods a total of $188,100 for the stolen equipment.

According to court documents, Woods used aliases and lies to enter into sexual relationships with multiple women and employment relationships with multiple men. He exploited these relationships by asking these individuals to rent equipment for him, thus acting as straw renters of the equipment — using their real names and banking information to obtain the equipment. Once the rental equipment was obtained, Woods — again, using various aliases — lined up buyers for the stolen equipment by posting the equipment for sale on Facebook Marketplace or similar websites.

Through this scheme, the unwitting straw renters suffered damage to their credit scores and suffered financial losses; the victim rental companies suffered financial losses; and the victim buyers — many of whom were small business owners — sustained devastating financial losses when the equipment they purchased was ultimately returned to the appropriate rental companies. According to the victim declarations, this fraud had a direct impact on multiple victims’ financial solvency and caused substantial loss of retirement, education, or other savings.

Among the rental equipment cited in court documents as being stolen then sold by Woods is a Boxer skid steer from Home Depot in Olathe, Kan., a Bobcat skid steer from United Rentals in Olathe, and a Toro Dingo TX 1000 compact utility loader from Colman Equipment in Smithville, Mo.

As part of the relevant conduct in the scheme, Woods entered into a romantic relationship with a woman with an intellectual disability. Woods exploited this relationship by having the woman buy and rent property for him, including a truck, multiple trailers, and 12 smart phones. Additionally, Woods told the woman they were going to get married, and – based on those lies – used her money to purchase a $3,500 ring for himself.

$1,042,000 Real Estate Fraud Scheme

As part of the real-estate scheme, Woods fraudulently sold 12 homes he did not own, extracting large down payments and monthly installment payments from unsuspecting victim buyers, from September 2021 to February 2022. The scheme involved total payments, made or intended, of over $1 million.

In this scheme, Woods (through his companies, Ace’s Remediation and Lawn Service or Vaughns Property Management) solicited and received subcontracting jobs for maintenance tasks on homes going through the foreclosure process, many of which were owned by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. Instead of honoring the contracts and performing the agreed-upon work, Woods posed as the owner of a real-estate company and fraudulently sold the homes to unsuspecting victim buyers. According to court documents, Woods used aliases with each victim of this scheme.

Woods elicited large downpayments from the victims and had the victims enter fraudulent contracts, requiring them to make monthly installment payments until the homes were paid in full. In total, Woods elicited $183,000 in down payments and monthly installments from various victims. Additionally, the victims also spent approximately $33,777 to remodel the homes, leading to a total actual loss of $216,777.

According to court documents, Woods attempted to victimize two additional individuals but the fraud was discovered before a downpayment was made. According to the victim declarations, this fraud — like the rental-equipment scheme — had a devastating financial impact on numerous lives. This fraud had a direct impact on multiple victims’ solvency; has caused substantial loss of retirement, education, or other savings; has caused substantial changes to employment and/or living arrangements; and has impacted victims’ ability to obtain credit.

Among the residential properties cited in court documents as fraudulently sold by Woods is a residence in Shawnee, Kan.

The intended loss of the two schemes totaled $2,229,177 while the actual loss of the schemes totaled $900,896.

For the rental-equipment scheme, the intended loss was calculated by adding the value of the stolen rental equipment, $999,077, to the amount the victim buyers paid the defendant, $188,100. The intended loss for the real-estate scheme was calculated by adding the amount paid by the victims for the downpayments, home upgrades, and/or monthly installment payments to the total unpaid amount owed under the fraudulent contracts for a total of $1,042,000.

The three counts of travel fraud to which Woods pleaded guilty are related to instances in which he caused his victims to travel across state lines as part of the fraud schemes.

During the schemes, Woods used multiple aliases, including Jeremy Ace, Jeremy Vaughn, Jeremy Brown, James Hanna, and Elvis John.

Woods has 31 prior felony convictions, including several fraud convictions that are relevant conduct in the two schemes in this case. When arrested in this case in May 2022, Woods was on felony probation in four separate cases in four separate Missouri counties and was on misdemeanor probation in Montgomery County, Kansas. Additionally, he has been convicted of 25 misdemeanors and has had his probation or parole revoked 15 times. He also has pending cases in four separate counties, including an active warrant out of Lyon County, Kansas, for escaping from custody.

 </figure>KANSAS CITY —A Kansas City-area man was sentenced in federal court this week for two fraud schemes in which he sold unwitting victims rental equipment and real estate that did not belong to him, according to the United State's Attorney.Jeremy Ace Woods, 46, Independence, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Howard F. Sachs to 17 years in federal prison without parole. The court also ordered Woods to pay $798,021 in restitution to 48 victims and to forfeit to the government $336,150, which represents the proceeds he personally received from the charged conduct in this case.On Dec. 14, 2022, Woods pleaded guilty to three counts of travel fraud and two counts of wire fraud as part of a rental-equipment scheme and a real estate scheme that victimized at least 48 individuals or businesses.$1,187,177 Rental Equipment Fraud SchemeAs part of the rental-equipment scheme, Woods stole approximately 96 pieces of rental equipment valued at approximately $999,077 from 25 separate rental companies. He then sold at least 41 pieces of equipment to at least 15 victim buyers from across the Midwest, including buyers from Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. These victim buyers paid Woods a total of $188,100 for the stolen equipment.According to court documents, Woods used aliases and lies to enter into sexual relationships with multiple women and employment relationships with multiple men. He exploited these relationships by asking these individuals to rent equipment for him, thus acting as straw renters of the equipment — using their real names and banking information to obtain the equipment. Once the rental equipment was obtained, Woods — again, using various aliases — lined up buyers for the stolen equipment by posting the equipment for sale on Facebook Marketplace or similar websites.Through this scheme, the unwitting straw renters suffered damage to their credit scores and suffered financial losses; the victim rental companies suffered financial losses; and the victim buyers — many of whom were small business owners — sustained devastating financial losses when the equipment they purchased was ultimately returned to the appropriate rental companies. According to the victim declarations, this fraud had a direct impact on multiple victims’ financial solvency and caused substantial loss of retirement, education, or other savings.Among the rental equipment cited in court documents as being stolen then sold by Woods is a Boxer skid steer from Home Depot in Olathe, Kan., a Bobcat skid steer from United Rentals in Olathe, and a Toro Dingo TX 1000 compact utility loader from Colman Equipment in Smithville, Mo.As part of the relevant conduct in the scheme, Woods entered into a romantic relationship with a woman with an intellectual disability. Woods exploited this relationship by having the woman buy and rent property for him, including a truck, multiple trailers, and 12 smart phones. Additionally, Woods told the woman they were going to get married, and – based on those lies – used her money to purchase a $3,500 ring for himself.$1,042,000 Real Estate Fraud SchemeAs part of the real-estate scheme, Woods fraudulently sold 12 homes he did not own, extracting large down payments and monthly installment payments from unsuspecting victim buyers, from September 2021 to February 2022. The scheme involved total payments, made or intended, of over $1 million.In this scheme, Woods (through his companies, Ace’s Remediation and Lawn Service or Vaughns Property Management) solicited and received subcontracting jobs for maintenance tasks on homes going through the foreclosure process, many of which were owned by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. Instead of honoring the contracts and performing the agreed-upon work, Woods posed as the owner of a real-estate company and fraudulently sold the homes to unsuspecting victim buyers. According to court documents, Woods used aliases with each victim of this scheme.Woods elicited large downpayments from the victims and had the victims enter fraudulent contracts, requiring them to make monthly installment payments until the homes were paid in full. In total, Woods elicited $183,000 in down payments and monthly installments from various victims. Additionally, the victims also spent approximately $33,777 to remodel the homes, leading to a total actual loss of $216,777.According to court documents, Woods attempted to victimize two additional individuals but the fraud was discovered before a downpayment was made. According to the victim declarations, this fraud — like the rental-equipment scheme — had a devastating financial impact on numerous lives. This fraud had a direct impact on multiple victims’ solvency; has caused substantial loss of retirement, education, or other savings; has caused substantial changes to employment and/or living arrangements; and has impacted victims’ ability to obtain credit.Among the residential properties cited in court documents as fraudulently sold by Woods is a residence in Shawnee, Kan.$2,229,177 Total LossesThe intended loss of the two schemes totaled $2,229,177 while the actual loss of the schemes totaled $900,896.For the rental-equipment scheme, the intended loss was calculated by adding the value of the stolen rental equipment, $999,077, to the amount the victim buyers paid the defendant, $188,100. The intended loss for the real-estate scheme was calculated by adding the amount paid by the victims for the downpayments, home upgrades, and/or monthly installment payments to the total unpaid amount owed under the fraudulent contracts for a total of $1,042,000.The three counts of travel fraud to which Woods pleaded guilty are related to instances in which he caused his victims to travel across state lines as part of the fraud schemes.During the schemes, Woods used multiple aliases, including Jeremy Ace, Jeremy Vaughn, Jeremy Brown, James Hanna, and Elvis John.Woods has 31 prior felony convictions, including several fraud convictions that are relevant conduct in the two schemes in this case. When arrested in this case in May 2022, Woods was on felony probation in four separate cases in four separate Missouri counties and was on misdemeanor probation in Montgomery County, Kansas. Additionally, he has been convicted of 25 misdemeanors and has had his probation or parole revoked 15 times. He also has pending cases in four separate counties, including an active warrant out of Lyon County, Kansas, for escaping from custody.

KC-area man sold real estate, rental equipment he did not own

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating the deadly shooting of a 48-year-old Kansas woman and have made an arrest.

Just before 11:30p.m. Thursday, police were dispatched to a reported shooting in the area of 800 S. Mission in Wichita, according to Officer Juan Rebolledo.

First responders located two shooting victims including 48-year-old Adraine Kenney of Wichita who was pronounced dead at the scene. EMS transported a 22-year-old woman&nbsp;to a local hospital with critical injuries.

Investigators and officers identified and apprehended the 30-year-old male suspect without incident following a brief standoff in the 600 block of S. Mission. 

Preliminary investigation revealed that all three individuals were involved in a disturbance which led to the suspect shooting the two victims. All parties involved in this incident are acquainted with each other and there are no outstanding suspects.

The suspect faces charges of 1st Degree Murder, Attempted 1st Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Burglary , and Kidnapping, according to Rebolledo.

This case will be presented to the District Attorney’s office. Police will identify the suspect when&nbsp;formal charges are filed, according to Rebolledo.

48-year-old Kansas woman dead, another injured in shooting

JOHNSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a road rage shooting and have made an arrest.

Just before 7p.m. Tuesday, police&nbsp;were dispatched to a residence in Olathe where they found a 42-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his arm, according to a media release.

The injury occurred during a road rage incident on southbound Interstate 35 Highway, south of 119th&nbsp;Street.

EMS transported the victim to an area hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. Police located the suspect who was taken into custody on a requested charge of attempted murder.

Police make arrest in Kansas road-rage shooting

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas man has been charged with two counts of murder after detectives in a newly formed cold case unit connected him to the deaths of two women nearly three decades ago.

DNA evidence led to the arrest of 52-year-old Gary Dion Davis, Kansas City Police Chief Karl Oakman and Wyandotte County District Attorney Mark Dupree said Wednesday. Davis is jailed on a $500,000 bond for two counts of second-degree murder, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/crime/article279564234.html">Kansas City Star</a>&nbsp;reported.

Davis was a long-haul truck driver in the 1990s. He is accused of killing 26-year-old Christina King, who was found beaten to death behind an abandoned building on Christmas Day in 1996. He also is charged with fatally stabbing Pearl Barnes, whose body was found in a vacant house a month earlier.

Davis does not yet have a listed attorney. Two phone numbers listed for him were no longer in service, and a third had a full mailbox and wasn't accepting messages on Thursday.

The circumstances behind the deaths are still being investigated, but police said they do not believe that Davis knew either of the women. Detectives are trying to determine if Davis could be responsible for other crimes.

The Kansas City Kansas Police Department's cold case unit began operation in January 2022 and consists of three full-time detectives. Oakman said the department has “a lot of unsolved cases” and already had identified suspects in 11 homicide cases.

"So, it may not be today. It may not be tomorrow. In fact, it may not be this year. But there’s gonna be a time,” Oakman said. “You may be in a drive-thru line. You may be at the grocery store. We’re gonna eventually get you.”

Authorities also announced that two other unrelated cases were recently solved.

A 66-year-old inmate was charged in May after he confessed to killing 16-year-old Dion Estell, who was found shot to death in a creek bed in July 1997. The inmate, who was convicted of a 1998 killing and is now in hospice care, confessed to cold case detectives because he wanted closure for Estell's family.

The oldest case cleared involved the death of an hours-old baby girl found in a dumpster behind an apartment complex in November 1976. DNA evidence led detectives to the mother of the child in 2022.

The woman accused her grandmother of taking the baby away shortly after she gave birth. The grandmother, who has since died, was identified as the primary suspect.

Kan. cold case detectives connect 2 killings to the same suspect

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Texas man in connection with an ATM theft.

Just after 9:30p.m. Wednesday, police arrested 23-year-old Augustus Sherman Jr, 23, of Houston, Texas on a Riley County District Court warrant for burglary of a motor vehicle, two counts of theft, and two counts of criminal damage to property, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The charges stem from a 2022 incident in which Sherman was alleged to be involved in the theft of a vehicle and money from an ATM in Manhattan. 

The total bond was set at $12,000 and he remains confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this report.

RCPD captures suspect in 2022 ATM theft

Just before 3a.m. September 3, police responded to a robbery in the 300 block of SE Lawrence Street in Topeka.&nbsp; Officers found two individuals who had been assaulted and robbed with a firearm. As a result of the investigation, detectives identified a suspect as Cristian Soto, 20, of Topeka.

Police found Soto on September 6, arrested and booked into jail on requested charges of Aggravated Robbery; Armed w/dangerous weapon, Aggravated battery; Knowingly use physical contact in angry/rude manner w/weapon, Aggravated assault; Use of a deadly weapon and Theft.

As a result of this investigation, two additional suspects were identified as Darian J. Isley, 20, of Topeka, and Raul A. Retana Jr., 22, of Topeka. On Wednesday, police located both suspects and made arrests.

Darian J. Isley is being held on requested charges of&nbsp; Aggravated assault; Use of deadly weapon, Aggravated Robbery; Armed w/dangerous weapon, Theft, Criminal possession of a weapon; convicted of person/drug felony; firearm used in crime and a Warrant.

3 suspects in violent Kansas armed robbery captured

ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new accusations after an arrest.

On Tuesday police arrested 39-year-old Nicholas L. Ruby of Leavenworth on requested charges of&nbsp; criminal threat in the 1300 block U.S.73 Highway, according to Police Cheif Mike Wilson.

Ruby has previous convictions over the past twenty years that include theft, battery, aggravated robbery, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, criminal damage to property and obstruction, according to the Kansas Department Corrections.
