JEFFERSON COUNTY—A Kansas man jailed for an alleged violent attack on his father is facing additional charges.

According to Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Herrig, 59-year-old Michael J. West died Monday evening from injuries in a weekend attack.

Just after 8:30a.m. September 9, deputies responded to 6956 Shawnee Lane, Lake Ridge Estates in Ozawkie, according to a media release. The victim reported that he had been hit by a blunt object several times.

First responders found&nbsp; West with life-threatening injuries. EMS transported him to&nbsp;Stormont Vail Hospital&nbsp;in Topeka where he died.

Investigators later found the suspect identified as 30-year-old Michael T. West, the victim's son, in Leavenworth. 

Deputies arrested and booked him into the Jefferson County Jail on requested charges of attempted murder in the first degree. He his being held without bond, according to online jail records.

Sheriff Herrg, the murder weapon was not a golf club as some have speculated.

Sheriff: Kansas teen was driving with alcohol and cocaine

RILEY COUNTY —A Missouri man was injured and arrested after an accident just before 5p.m. Monday in Manhattan.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity reported a&nbsp;2011 Chevrolet Suburban driven by William Windle, 60, of Independence, Mo., was westbound on Pierre Street at South 5th in Manhattan.

The SUV veered south onto a property and into a house. It was reported Windle backed up and hit the house again before attempting to drive away. 

Windle came to a stop nearby and was detained by officers on scene. EMS transported Windle to Via Christi for treatment of minor injuries, then upon release transported him to the Riley County Jail where he was booked for driving under the influence, and two counts of leaving the scene of an accident. 

Windle remains confined in the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $3,500, according to the RCPD.

RCPD: Driver arrested after SUV struck house multiple times

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration has cleared the way for the release of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-iran-us-prisoners-swap-deal-billions-e17dc67521798a2836ab4a3213e9277b">five American citizens detained in Iran</a>&nbsp;by issuing a blanket waiver for international banks to transfer $6 billion in frozen Iranian money from South Korea to Qatar without fear of U.S. sanctions. In addition, as part of the deal, the administration has agreed to release five Iranian citizens held in the United States.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken signed off on the sanctions waivers late last week, a month after U.S. and Iranian officials said an agreement in principle was in place. Congress was not informed of the waiver decision until Monday, according to the notification, which was obtained by The Associated Press.

The outlines of the deal had been previously announced and the waiver was expected. But the notification marked the first time the administration said it was releasing five Iranian prisoners as part of the deal. The prisoners have not been named.

The waiver drew criticism of President Joe Biden from Republicans and others who say the deal will boost the Iranian economy at a time when Iran poses a growing threat to U.S. troops and Mideast allies.

On social media, Kansas U.S. Senator Roger Marshall criticized the decision and timing of the announcement. "Joe Biden releases 5 prisoners and $6 Billion to Iran, a leading state sponsor of terrorism."  "On the day we pay tribute and remember the victims of 9/11, one of the most horrific attacks on American soil, the Biden Admin brokered a deal with terrorists who openly shout ‘Death to America.'

On X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa said “it’s ridiculous for US to be blackmailed into paying $6B for hostages which will help indirectly finance the number 1 foreign policy of Iran: terrorism.” Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas accused Biden of “paying ransom to the world’s worst state sponsor of terrorism.”

The waiver means that European, Middle Eastern and Asian banks will not run afoul of U.S. sanctions in converting the money frozen in South Korea and transferring it to Qatar’s central bank, where it will be held for Iran to use for the purchase of humanitarian goods.

The transfer of the $6 billion was the critical element in the prisoner release deal, which saw four of the five American detainees transferred&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-us-prisoners-house-arrest-7be581f79f66636355600627dda3a5ae">from Iranian jails into house arrest</a>&nbsp;last month. The fifth detainee had already been under house arrest.

Due to numerous U.S. sanctions on foreign banks that engage in transactions aimed at benefitting Iran, several European countries had balked at participating in the transfer. Blinken’s waiver is aimed at easing their concerns about any risk of U.S. sanctions.

People familiar with negotiations said they expect the detainees will be released as early as next week.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-us-prisoners-ba31e3b9c145c0b4fe55d1a66f88b885">The American prisoners</a>&nbsp;include Siamak Namazi, who was detained in 2015 and was later sentenced to 10 years in prison on internationally criticized spying charges; Emad Sharghi, a venture capitalist sentenced to 10 years; and Morad Tahbaz, a British-American conservationist of Iranian descent who was arrested in 2018 and also received a 10-year sentence. The fourth and fifth prisoners were not identified.

“To facilitate their release, the United States has committed to release five Iranian nationals currently held in the United States and to permit the transfer of approximately $6 billion in restricted Iranian funds held in (South Korea) to restricted accounts in Qatar, where the funds will be available only for humanitarian trade,” Blinken wrote.

The sanctions waiver applies to banks and other financial institutions in South Korea, Germany, Ireland, Qatar and Switzerland.

“I determine that it is in the national security interest of the United States to waive the imposition of sanctions ... with respect to foreign financial institutions under the primary jurisdiction of Germany, Ireland, Qatar, the Republic of Korea, and Switzerland that are notified directly in writing by the U.S. government, to the extent necessary for such institutions to engage in transactions occurring on or after August 9, 2023,” Blinken wrote.

Sanctions waivers apply to transactions involving previously penalized entities such as the National Iranian Oil Company and Central Bank of Iran “ to transfer funds from accounts in the Republic of Korea to accounts in Switzerland and Germany and from accounts in Switzerland and Germany to accounts in Qatar, and to use the transferred funds for further humanitarian transactions in accordance with written guidance from the U.S. Government,” he wrote.

Kansas man accused of violent attack on his father

JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon after a chase and crash

Just after 9p.m. Sept.6, a Sheriff’s Deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 2016 red Dodge Dart north of 198th and K-16 Highway for a traffic infraction, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Casey Cane Jordan Crawford, 30, Holton, allegedly failed to stop and fled eluding law enforcement. 

Deputies lost sight of the vehicle near 158th and T. Road due to dusty conditions. On Thursday morning, a Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy located the wrecked Dodge Dart near 190th and the Jefferson County line. 

Deputies later located Crawford walking on Banner Road in Holton late Thursday evening. They arrested and booked him&nbsp;into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of felony fleeing and eluding law enforcement, interference with law enforcement and driving while suspended.&nbsp;

Crawford has previous convictions for ID theft, battery, aggravated assault, flee or attempt to elude law enforcement and interference with law enforcement, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

Just before 5a.m. Sunday, police were dispatched to a shooting in the 300 block West Avenue B in Hutchinson, according to a media release.&nbsp;

First responders located 18-year-old John Cantu III of Hutchinson with two gunshot wounds to his legs. It was determined that the shooting occurred in the 100 block of South Madison Street. Cantu was transported by EMS to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center where he was subsequently treated and released.

At the scene, police arrested 26-year-old Sergio Luna Para and 31-year-old Demetrius Cantu both of Hutchinson on requested charges of felony interference with law enforcement. Persons of interest who are acquainted with the victim have been also been identified.

2 arrested for shooting that hospitalized Hutchison teen

KANSAS CITY– Trevor Scott Sparks, a Kansas City federal defendant who escaped after trial and was recaptured, was sentenced in federal district court Tuesday for his role in leading a $4.1 million heavily armed drug-trafficking conspiracy, and directing two kidnappings, both resulting in murders, and numerous assaults, according to the United State's Attorney.

The drug trafficking organization (DTO) Sparks led distributed approximately 400 kilograms of methamphetamine in the Kansas City and St. Louis metropolitan areas in 2017 and 2018.

Sparks, 34, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Greg Kays to life imprisonment, plus 60 months consecutive, in federal prison without parole on the drug, money, and gun charges, all consecutive to 33 months for the escape.&nbsp; The court also ordered Sparks to pay a money judgment of $400,000.00, which represents the profits he received from the drug-trafficking conspiracy. That forfeiture amount is based on the unlawful distribution of approximately 100 kilograms of methamphetamine, based on an average street sale price of $7,500.00 per kilogram, and an average cost to the DTO of $3,500.00 a kilogram.&nbsp; Sparks and the co-conspirators he supplied are believed to have distributed approximately 400 kilograms of methamphetamine in less than 2 years.

On November 7th, 2022, Sparks was found guilty by a jury of all counts presented during the weeklong trial.&nbsp; The charges included participating in conspiracies to distribute methamphetamine and launder drug proceeds from January 1, 2017, to December 18, 2018, possessing firearms in relation to that drug-trafficking crime, and to being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition.&nbsp; Sparks and several of his co-conspirators were arrested out of a residence on Smart Avenue in the Northeast area of Kansas City, Missouri, on December 18, 2018.&nbsp; Located in that residence were numerous firearms, cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, United States currency, drug ledgers, and other indicia of drug trafficking.&nbsp; This is the same residence where at least two of the DTO related assaults occurred. &nbsp;&nbsp;

While no one was charged with nor convicted at trial of it, members of the Sparks DTO were found responsible at sentencing by the Court for two murders. In early August 2018, James “Old School” Hampton was seized in St. Louis by members of the Sparks DTO at the direction of Sparks.&nbsp; Hampton was seized because the drug conspiracy was convinced Hampton could help find the drugs and money stolen by co-conspirator David Richards. When they realized Hampton could not or would not help, Hampton was restrained, beaten, and tortured. Hampton was then kidnapped and transported from St. Louis to Kansas City in the trunk of his own car. Brittanie Broyles, who was with Hampton and witnessed him being beaten, tortured, restrained, and kidnapped, was also kidnapped and taken to Kansas City.&nbsp; Once in Kansas City, Hampton was left in the trunk of his car and he and his car were secreted in a co-conspirator’s garage near the Smart residence. Broyles managed to obtain control of another co-conspirator’s cellular telephone and surreptitiously send text messages to friends and family in St. Louis about her and “Old School’s” plight.&nbsp; Once that was discovered by the DTO, Sparks directed the DTO to move from one hotel to another, thereby thwarting efforts to locate Broyles. Her friends and family and law enforcement were unable to locate her before she was murdered by members of the Sparks DTO.

On August 6, 2018, Hampton’s car and body were discovered burning in Bates City, Missouri.&nbsp; This was after members of the DTO retrieved Hampton’s car (and body) from the secreted location and Sparks directed them to take it and burn it because of the odor emanating from the vehicle and to destroy the evidence and Hampton’s body.&nbsp; Witnesses and video identified Co-Defendant Gerald Lee Ginnings of Grandview, Missouri, being followed by Co-Defendant Markus Michael A. Patterson, of Kansas City, Missouri, in another co-conspirator’s car, as Ginnings drove Hampton’s car with his body in the trunk to Bates City, Missouri, where it was found by the Sni Valley Fire Department fully engulfed.&nbsp; Once they extinguished the flames, Hampton’s desecrated body was found in what was left of the trunk.&nbsp; Sparks forgave a drug debt of Ginnings for this duty.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

On August 8, 2018, Broyles’s body was recovered near the Super Flea in the Northeast area of Kansas City, Missouri. She had been murdered by two gunshots to her head.&nbsp; While not charged nor convicted of it, the Court at sentencing found that witnesses and evidence implicated Sparks in ordering her killing because of what she knew about Hampton.&nbsp; Ginnings and Patterson were likewise implicated as the two responsible for this murder.&nbsp; Ginnings was sentenced August 25, 2023, to 520 months in federal prison on similar charges to Sparks.&nbsp; Co-Defendant Patterson was sentenced August 17, 2023, to 560 months on the same charges. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Under federal law, it is illegal for anyone involved in drug trafficking to possesses firearms related to that trafficking and it is also illegal for anyone who has been convicted of a felony to be in possession of any firearm or ammunition. Sparks has prior felony convictions for robbery, drug offenses, and assault.

Sparks was the main defendant over two indictments with 32 co-defendants, all who have pleaded guilty and been sentenced in those two cases.

On December 6, 2022, Sparks and fellow federal inmate Sergio Perez-Martinez escaped the Cass County jail where they were being held for sentencing in their respective federal cases.&nbsp; On December 30, 2022, Sparks was apprehended in the Northeast area of Kansas City, Missouri.&nbsp; Also charged in that escape case was Perez-Martinez (still at large), Sparks’ mother and stepfather, and another man, who was the co-conspirator that stored the car with Hampton in it.&nbsp; Sparks was also sentenced today for that escape to which he pled guilty on June 28, 2023. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 </figure>KANSAS CITY– Trevor Scott Sparks, a Kansas City federal defendant who escaped after trial and was recaptured, was sentenced in federal district court Tuesday for his role in leading a $4.1 million heavily armed drug-trafficking conspiracy, and directing two kidnappings, both resulting in murders, and numerous assaults, according to the United State's Attorney.The drug trafficking organization (DTO) Sparks led distributed approximately 400 kilograms of methamphetamine in the Kansas City and St. Louis metropolitan areas in 2017 and 2018.Sparks, 34, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Greg Kays to life imprisonment, plus 60 months consecutive, in federal prison without parole on the drug, money, and gun charges, all consecutive to 33 months for the escape.&nbsp; The court also ordered Sparks to pay a money judgment of $400,000.00, which represents the profits he received from the drug-trafficking conspiracy. That forfeiture amount is based on the unlawful distribution of approximately 100 kilograms of methamphetamine, based on an average street sale price of $7,500.00 per kilogram, and an average cost to the DTO of $3,500.00 a kilogram.&nbsp; Sparks and the co-conspirators he supplied are believed to have distributed approximately 400 kilograms of methamphetamine in less than 2 years.On November 7th, 2022, Sparks was found guilty by a jury of all counts presented during the weeklong trial.&nbsp; The charges included participating in conspiracies to distribute methamphetamine and launder drug proceeds from January 1, 2017, to December 18, 2018, possessing firearms in relation to that drug-trafficking crime, and to being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition.&nbsp; Sparks and several of his co-conspirators were arrested out of a residence on Smart Avenue in the Northeast area of Kansas City, Missouri, on December 18, 2018.&nbsp; Located in that residence were numerous firearms, cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, United States currency, drug ledgers, and other indicia of drug trafficking.&nbsp; This is the same residence where at least two of the DTO related assaults occurred. &nbsp;&nbsp;While no one was charged with nor convicted at trial of it, members of the Sparks DTO were found responsible at sentencing by the Court for two murders. In early August 2018, James “Old School” Hampton was seized in St. Louis by members of the Sparks DTO at the direction of Sparks.&nbsp; Hampton was seized because the drug conspiracy was convinced Hampton could help find the drugs and money stolen by co-conspirator David Richards. When they realized Hampton could not or would not help, Hampton was restrained, beaten, and tortured. Hampton was then kidnapped and transported from St. Louis to Kansas City in the trunk of his own car. Brittanie Broyles, who was with Hampton and witnessed him being beaten, tortured, restrained, and kidnapped, was also kidnapped and taken to Kansas City.&nbsp; Once in Kansas City, Hampton was left in the trunk of his car and he and his car were secreted in a co-conspirator’s garage near the Smart residence. Broyles managed to obtain control of another co-conspirator’s cellular telephone and surreptitiously send text messages to friends and family in St. Louis about her and “Old School’s” plight.&nbsp; Once that was discovered by the DTO, Sparks directed the DTO to move from one hotel to another, thereby thwarting efforts to locate Broyles. Her friends and family and law enforcement were unable to locate her before she was murdered by members of the Sparks DTO.On August 6, 2018, Hampton’s car and body were discovered burning in Bates City, Missouri.&nbsp; This was after members of the DTO retrieved Hampton’s car (and body) from the secreted location and Sparks directed them to take it and burn it because of the odor emanating from the vehicle and to destroy the evidence and Hampton’s body.&nbsp; Witnesses and video identified Co-Defendant Gerald Lee Ginnings of Grandview, Missouri, being followed by Co-Defendant Markus Michael A. Patterson, of Kansas City, Missouri, in another co-conspirator’s car, as Ginnings drove Hampton’s car with his body in the trunk to Bates City, Missouri, where it was found by the Sni Valley Fire Department fully engulfed.&nbsp; Once they extinguished the flames, Hampton’s desecrated body was found in what was left of the trunk.&nbsp; Sparks forgave a drug debt of Ginnings for this duty.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;On August 8, 2018, Broyles’s body was recovered near the Super Flea in the Northeast area of Kansas City, Missouri. She had been murdered by two gunshots to her head.&nbsp; While not charged nor convicted of it, the Court at sentencing found that witnesses and evidence implicated Sparks in ordering her killing because of what she knew about Hampton.&nbsp; Ginnings and Patterson were likewise implicated as the two responsible for this murder.&nbsp; Ginnings was sentenced August 25, 2023, to 520 months in federal prison on similar charges to Sparks.&nbsp; Co-Defendant Patterson was sentenced August 17, 2023, to 560 months on the same charges. &nbsp;&nbsp;Under federal law, it is illegal for anyone involved in drug trafficking to possesses firearms related to that trafficking and it is also illegal for anyone who has been convicted of a felony to be in possession of any firearm or ammunition. Sparks has prior felony convictions for robbery, drug offenses, and assault.Sparks was the main defendant over two indictments with 32 co-defendants, all who have pleaded guilty and been sentenced in those two cases.<figure>

KC-area jail escapee sentenced, 2nd fugitive remains at large

WICHITA, KAN. – A federal grand jury in Wichita returned an indictment charging a Kansas man with crimes related to child pornography.

Eric Caleb Carlson, 43, of Wichita is charged with one count of receipt of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography, according to the United State's Attorney.

According to court documents, Synchronoss Technologies submitted two reports in June 2023 to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) regarding uploads of files containing child sexual abuse and exploitation materials to its cloud based backup service. An investigation led law enforcement authorities to identify and arrest Carlson.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Kansas Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) are investigating.

Kan. man accused of uploading child sex abuse videos

SEDGWICK COUNTY—A Kansas felon accused in a deadly shooting made his first court appearance this week.

Jeremy Miles, 36 of Wichita, is charged with 1st degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Just before 11a.m. Aug. 30, police were dispatched to a reported shooting at an apartment complex in the 2000 block of S. Seneca in Wichita, according to Officer Kris Gupilan.&nbsp;

First responders&nbsp; located&nbsp;69-year-old James Gibson of Wichita with gunshot wounds inside an apartment. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Police&nbsp; arrested <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/InmateSearch/Details.aspx?Id=22921">Miles</a>&nbsp;who remains jailed on a bond of $500,000. He has three previous convictions for aggravated robbery and one for criminal possession of a weapon by a felon, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

Kansas felon with a history of robbery now charged with murder

WASHINGTON – A Kansas man pleaded guilty on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2023, to a felony offense related to his actions during the breach of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. His actions and the actions of others disrupted a joint session of the U.S. Congress convened to ascertain and count the electoral votes related to the 2020 presidential election, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Christopher Kuehne, 50, of Olathe, Kansas, pleaded guilty in the District of Columbia to a felony offense of obstruction of law enforcement during a civil disorder before U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Kelly. Judge Kelly scheduled Kuehne to be sentenced on Feb. 23, 2024.

&nbsp;According to court documents, Kuehne, associated with the Kansas City chapter of the Proud Boys, made plans with other members of the group to attend a rally in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6, 2021. Prior to his arrival, Kuehne sent a message to others in the group regarding a potential confrontation with Antifa and BLM, stating, “Be prepared not only to beat down but when you do action of violence so utterly massive that we send a message.”&nbsp;

&nbsp;Kuehne traveled to Arlington, Virginia, on Jan. 4, 2021, with other members of the Proud Boys chapter. On Jan. 6, Kuehne met with a larger group of Proud Boys at the Washington Monument. Kuehne, wearing a ballistic helmet and carrying protective gloves, then made his way to the U.S. Capitol, shouting, among other things, “Whose streets? Our streets!”&nbsp;

&nbsp;Kuehne and others in the group proceded to the west side of the Capitol’s grounds and gathered outside of the barricades. Shortly before 1 p.m., the crowd breached the barriers and surged toward the Capitol building, allowing Kuehne and others in the group to move past multiple lines of barricades and toward the Lower West Plaza, inside the restricted area. Kuehne remained on the west front of the Capitol for more than an hour, ignoring law enforcement commands to disperse. Eventually, Kuehne made his way to the base of the Capitol and onto the Upper West Terrace. Kuehne entered the Capitol through the Senate Wing Door at approximately 2:25 p.m.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Once inside the building, Kuehne and others in the group made their way to the Crypt. Kuehne and others in the group maneuvered a portable lectern to block police from closing a door in the Crypt that would have prevented the group from moving further throughout the building. Kuehne and others then moved from the Crypt to the Capitol Visitor Center and eventually left the building through the Senate Wing Door. Kuehne later deleted materials from his phone that he had sent to others in the group and encouraged others to do the same.&nbsp;

A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The case is being prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Counterterrorism Section of the Department of Justice’s National Security Division. Kan. man enters plea to felony charge in January 6 Capitol riot

Progress continues on a 43-year-old murder case in Barton County. On Dec. 8, 2022, Steven Hanks of Burden was arrested for the 1980 murder of Mary Robin Walter. Hanks was bound over for arraignment in Barton County District Court following Wednesday's preliminary hearing. Sheriff Brian Bellendir said that's one of many hurdles cleared so far in the case.

"In a felony case, they have to have a preliminary hearing," he said. "This is where the judge decides whether or not we've got the probable cause to try him for the felony. They said we did."

In January 1980, Walter was found deceased by her husband. She had been shot multiple times in a now-defunct Nelson Trailer Park west of Great Bend.

"Hanks was developed fairly early in the case as a suspect but they were not able to nail it down," Bellendir said. "We took another run at the case a year and a half ago. My Det. Sgt. Adam Hales got COVID and he had nothing to do. He had to stay home, so he took the case home and went through it all."

Hales was joined by detectives David Paden, Bryan Volkel, and Alex Lomas, as well as Patrol Sgt. Travis Doze. The detectives made their case and presented it to the Barton County Attorney's Office in October 2022. Hanks, then 68 years old, was arrested at his home in Burden two months later.

Hanks' arraignment has been scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 9 at 12:45 p.m. at the temporary Barton County District Court facility located at 1709 Main St. in Great Bend.

KANSAS CITY —A sheriff's deputy avoided injury after a driver struck her with his vehicle.

The deputy was patrolling near Claybrook Park about 4:25 p.m. Sunday when she saw an SUV with its hood open and a man appearing to work on the vehicle.&nbsp; He had a young boy with him, who was later determined to be his 6-year-old son. The deputy approached to see if she could help.

The man appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. He said he probably had a warrant for his arrest. He then told the deputy he had drunk a beer. The deputy attempted to detain the man, but he pulled away from her and got back in his vehicle. The deputy tried to stop him from starting the ignition, but he drove off with her still reaching inside the vehicle. He was yelling for his son to get in the car as he circled the parking lot.

The boy was still standing next to the deputy when his father drove at her and struck her left leg with his vehicle. The man told his son he would be back for him and sped away.

Kearney, Missouri Police came to the area and located the vehicle, which fled from them. They pursued it, and deputies unsuccessfully tried to use Stop Sticks to stop the vehicle. 

The suspect identified as 33-year-old Christopher E. Crawford, eventually stopped in a driveway near 10th&nbsp;Street and Prospect in Kearney.&nbsp; Crawford jumped from his vehicle and tried to get in a garage door. A Kearney officer and Sheriff’s Office deputy deployed their Tasers, to no effect. 

Crawford continued to fight the officer and multiple deputies and try to get in the garage door. Another deputy deployed his canine partner, which finally allowed the officer and deputies to get Crawford into custody.

Deputies were able to locate other family members of the 6-year-old and turn him over to their custody. The boy was not injured.

&nbsp;Crawford, was treated for his dog bite at an area hospital and then transported to the Clay County Detention Center on requested charges of first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, endangering the welfare of a child, resisting arrest and unlawful possession of a firearm. He is being held on a $100,000 bond.

Suspect struck deputy with his car, narrowly missed his own child

SALINE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas couple for alleged abuse.

On Thursday, deputies arrested&nbsp;&nbsp;50-year-old Bradley Scott Stanley and 57-year-old Trisha Kay Womack of Gypsum, according to Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander.

The couple allegedly abused and held a 20-year-old woman against her will.

The abuse reportedly began in July. The 20-year-old victim, who had been living with the couple, reported Stanley for physically abusing her and Womack at a home in the 200 block of Hawkes Street in Gypsum, according to Melander.

The victim returned to the residence on Wednesday at the invitation of Womack who told her that Stanley was not there and she could pick up her belongings.

When she arrived, the couple held her against her will and tried to convince her not to testify against Stanley. When the couple fell asleep, she was able to escape.

Deputies used a search warrant to enter the home and found Stanley hiding in a closet behind a false wall.&nbsp; They used pepper spray to remove him from the residence.&nbsp;

Stanley is being held on requested charges of Aggravated Kidnapping, Aggravated Intimidation of a Witness, Criminal Threat, DV Battery, Possession of Meth and Possession of Paraphernalia and several warrants from July and August for&nbsp;Aggravated Kidnapping, Aggravated Battery and Aggravated Domestic Violence Battery Impeding Breathing and Domestic Violence Battery

Kansas couple accused of kidnapping 20-year-old woman

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating three suspects on drug allegations.

Just after 4:30p.m. Sept. 2, at approximately 4:30 p.m., a police observed a vehicle traveling in the area of 8th Street and Washington Street in Great Bend with a driver 51-year-old&nbsp; Mark Miller who the officer recognized and knew to have a suspended drivers license, according to a media release.

The vehicle pulled in and parked behind a closed business in the 2500 block of 10th Street. A female passenger exited the vehicle, and began walking away as soon as the officer got behind the vehicle. K9 Menta was deployed for a free air sniff of the vehicle, and indicated to the presence of illegal narcotics.

The female passenger that left the vehicle, identified as 34-year-old Davina Demoret, age 34, was located and detained, as well as another passenger, identified as&nbsp; 56-year-old Lisa Whiting.

A search of the vehicle was conducted, and methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and a pair of brass knuckles were located. 

All three individuals were placed under arrest, and booked in lieu of $10,000 bonds at the Barton County Jail.

Kansas deputy finds meth, brass knuckles during traffic stop

FINNEY COUNTY—Four years after the murder of a southwest Kansas man police have made an arrest.

In September 2019, Ernie Ortiz was found shot outside of his family restaurant and later died at the hospital. It is believed Ortiz was shot during a robbery after he closed the business for the night.

On Wednesday, police arrested a woman in connection with the&nbsp;homicide.&nbsp; Samantha Jo Smith, 32, faces multiple charges for her involvement in the shooting death of Ortiz.

In September 2019, Officers of the Garden City Police Department responded to the area of Buffalo Jones Avenue and Bancroft Street for a reported person down. 

When they arrived, Officers found Ortiz lying in the parking lot of the El Conquistador Restaurant with gunshot wounds.&nbsp; Ortiz was transported to St. Catherine Hospital and later died.

In June 2023, the Garden City Police Department obtained an arrest warrant for First-Degree Murder and Aggravated Robbery against Smith in connection with the case. 

Police in Garden City worked with U.S. Marshals to locate Smith as she had moved out of Kansas. On September 6, the U.S. Marshals located and arrested Smith in Myrtle Beach, S.C.&nbsp;

In January, Crime Stoppers in southwest Kansas offered a&nbsp;$21,500 reward for information in the&nbsp;shooting death.

Suspect captured 4-years after murder of SW Kan. restaurant owner

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on alleged child sex crimes.

On Sept. 3, police arrested 49-year-old Alejandro Beltranena. of Guatemala, is charged with aggravated criminal sodomy, kidnapping, indecent solicitation of a child, and lewd and lascivious behavior, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Since a minor was involved, police released few details on the crime or arrest. Beltranena remains jailed on a $1,500,000, according to the district attorney's office. He is scheduled back in court September 18.

Man from Guatemala charged with sex crimes in Kansas

ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged forgery.

On Monday, police arrested 21-year-old Dreyona K. Seymore of Atchison, on a District Court warrant for forgery and theft, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

These charges are the result of a police investigation focusing on a safety deposit box being fraudulently accessed at a local bank on March 3, 2023 and cash being taken. Seymore is no longer in custody, according to online jail records.&nbsp; 

In October,&nbsp; police arrested her on requested charges of possession of marijuana and speeding.&nbsp;

Kan. woman accused of theft from bank safe deposit box

BUTLER COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on child sex crime allegations.

On Thursday, police in El Dorado conducted an investigation reported by way of a cyber tip, received from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), alleging the sexual exploitation of children through the use of electronic devices, according to a media release.

This investigation led to the arrest of 45-year-old Glen Shack in El Dorado and charges have been filed through the Butler County District Court for three counts of aggravated internet trading in child pornography.

Cyber tip led to arrest of Kansas man for child porn trading

RENO COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent knife attack and have a suspect in custody.

On Tuesday morning, police responded to report of a stabbing at 16th and Plum in Hutchinson, according to a media release.

First responders found one victim with multiple stab wounds. EMS transported the victim to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and later to St. Francis in Wichita for treatment of their injuries. The victim was reported in stable condition.
