UNION, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, nearly four decades after a woman was strangled with her body dumped in the woods.

Kirby R. King, now in his late 60s,&nbsp;<a href="https://fox2now.com/news/missouri/man-pleads-guilty-to-strangling-and-dumping-body-of-missouri-woman-3-decades-ago/">pleaded guilty in June</a>&nbsp;to involuntary manslaughter and felonious restraint in the 1987 death of 22-year-old Karla Jane Delcour. He was sentenced Thursday.

Investigators believe Delcour was killed at a home in the eastern Missouri town of Union on June 21, 1987. Her body was found about four days later near neighboring St. Clair, where she was living. Her wrists and neck were bound by a cord.

King was questioned in 1987 but not charged.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office reopened the case in 2018 and King was arrested in 2019, initially charged with second-degree murder. Investigators have not said what new evidence led to his arrest and conviction.

Man sentenced for killing that went unsolved for decades

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating two teens for violent robberies.

Just after 5:00 a.m. Sunday, police responded to the 1000 block of NE Atchison in Topeka on a report of a man yelling for help, according to Police Lt. Ron Ekis.

First responders located him and determined that he was a victim of Aggravated Assault and Aggravated Robbery.&nbsp; The victim have police a vehicle and suspect description.

Just after 5:30 a.m., officers responded to a similar call in the 2300 block of SE California in Topeka and located a second victim who gave a similar account of having been victimized, as well as similar suspect and vehicle descriptions.

Just before 6a.m. police located a vehicle matching the description of the suspects, and conducted a traffic stop near SE 10th and SE Swygart. The occupants of the vehicle were arrested, and officers located evidence related to the crimes.

As a result of the investigation, police&nbsp; booked a 16-year-old juvenile&nbsp; into the Shawnee County Juvenile Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Assault X 2, Criminal Discharge of a Firearm, Juvenile in Possession of a Firearm and Possession of Marijuana.

2 Kansas teens accused of violent armed robberies 

JOHNSON COUNTY —A Kansas police officer remains hospitalized in critical condition after a deadly exchange of gunfire.

City of Fairway, Kansas Chief of Police J.P. Thurlo has issued the following statement about the officer who was shot.

“As you are aware, one of our police officers was shot and critically wounded Sunday morning while trying to make an arrest in a neighboring community. Upon hearing the call for assistance, our officer courageously and without hesitation responded to help. These brave actions are reflective of the men and women in law enforcement in our community, and throughout this country, who put on the badge knowing the potential dangers they may face in the course of their duties. At this time, the officers condition remains critical."

"We will have more information about the officer in the coming days. I ask for thoughts and prayers for the officer and his family, and request privacy for the officer’s family and for the Fairway Police Department. We are grateful for those who have already expressed their support for our department, and who will in the days ahead.”

Just after 7:30 a.m., police responded to a stolen vehicle call at the QuikTrip at 95th Street and Interstate 35, according to a media release.

 Officers located that car and the suspect in the stolen vehicle struck one of Lenexa police department's patrol vehicles and drove away.

Police pursued the suspect northbound on Interstate 35 until the suspects left the vehicle and ran to a QuikTrip in the 4700 Block of Lamar Avenue in Mission.

Police from multiple agencies were trying to arrest the suspects when gunfire broke out. A suspect later identified as 40-year-old&nbsp;Shannon Wayne Marshall of Ashland City, Tennessee was shot and killed and a Fairway Kansas police officer was shot and hospitalized. 

The other suspect was arrested and later identified as 32-year-old Andrea Cothran of Portland Tennesee.

Cothran, a registered sex offender, is being held in Johnson County on&nbsp; requested charges of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, according to online jail records.

She is listed on the Tennessee sex offender registry for a July 2019 conviction for solicitation to commit sexual exploitation of a minor.  She has three previous convictions for child abuse and a probation violation for drugs, according to the Tennessee offender registry. She is scheduled for a court appearance in the case at 1:30p.m. Monday, according to online jail records.

Police have identified the officer who was wounded. A Johnson County law enforcement team is investigating the officer-involved shooting.

Police Chief asks for prayer for Kan. officer wounded in gun fight

LOS ANGELES (AP) — William Friedkin, the Oscar winning director who became a top filmmaker in his 30s with the gripping “The French Connection” and the horrifying “The Exorcist” and struggled in the following decades to match his early success has died. He was 87.

Friedkin, who won the best director Oscar for “The French Connection,” died Monday in Los Angeles, Marcia Franklin, his executive assistant for 24 years, told The Associated Press on behalf of his family and wife, former studio head Sherry Lansing.

“The French Connection,” based on a true story, deals with the efforts of maverick New York City police Detective James “Popeye” Doyle to track down Frenchman Fernando Rey, mastermind of a large drug pipeline funneling heroin into the United States. It contains one of the most thrilling chase scenes ever filmed.

Doyle, played by Gene Hackman in an Oscar-winning performance, barely misses making the arrest on a subway train, then hurries to his police car to follow the train as it emerges on an elevated railway. He races underneath, dodging cars, trucks and pedestrians, including a woman pushing a baby buggy, before abandoning the pursuit.

The movie also won Academy Awards for best picture, screenplay and film editing and led critics to hail Friedkin, then just 32, as a leading member of a new generation of filmmakers.

He followed with an even bigger blockbuster, “The Exorcist,” based on William Peter Blatty’s best-selling novel about a 12-year-old girl possessed by the devil.

The harrowing scenes of the girl’s possession and a splendid cast, including Linda Blair as the girl, Ellen Burstyn as her mother and Max Von Sydow and Jason Miller as the priests who try to exorcise the devil from her, helped make the film a box-office sensation. It was so scary for its era that many viewers fled the theater before it was over and some reported being unable to sleep for days afterward.

It received 10 Oscar nominations, including one for Friedkin as director, and won two, for Blatty’s script and for sound.

With that second success, Friedkin would go on to direct movies and TV shows well into the 21st century. But he would never again come close to matching the success of those early works.

Other film credits included “To Live and Die in L.A.,” “Cruising,” “Rules of Engagement” and a TV remake of the classic play and Sidney Lumet movie “12 Angry Men.” Friedkin also directed episodes for such TV shows as “The Twilight Zone,” “Rebel Highway” and “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.”

Born in Chicago on Aug. 29, 1939, he began working in local TV productions as a teenager. By age 16 he was directing live shows.

“My main influence was dramatic radio when I was a kid,” he said in a 2001 interview. “I remember listening to it in the dark, Everything was left to the imagination. It was just sound. I think of the sounds first and then the images.”

He moved from live shows to documentaries, making “The People Versus Paul Crump,” in 1962. It was the story of a prison inmate who rehabilitates himself on Death Row after being sentenced for the murder of a guard during a botched robbery at a Chicago food plant.

Producer David Wolper was so impressed with it that he brought Friedkin to Hollywood to direct network TV shows.

After working on such shows as “The Bold Ones,” “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour” and the documentary “The Thin Blue Line,” Friedkin landed his first film, 1967’s “Good Times.” It was a lighthearted musical romp headlined by the pop duo Sonny and Cher in what would be their only movie appearance together.

He followed that with “The Night They Raided Minsky’s,” about backstage life at a burlesque theater, and “The Birthday Party,” from a Harold Pinter play. He then gained critical attention with 1970’s “The Boys in the Band,” a landmark film about gay men.

Friedkin had three brief marriages in the 1970s and ’80s, to French actress Jeanne Moreau; British actress Lesley-Anne Down, with whom he had a son; and longtime Los Angeles TV news anchor Kelly Lange. In 1991 he married Paramount studio executive Lansing.

In recent years, Friedkin was often called on to reflect on his career around the 50th anniversaries of his classics and was always candid. He also wrote a memoir, “The Friedkin Connection,” which came out in 2012. And he wasn't done working yet: A new film, “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial,” starring Kiefer Sutherland, is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival next month.

Thinking back to the iconic car chase sequence in “The French Connection,” Friedkin told NBC News in 2021 that it was legitimately life-threatening and that he'd never do it again.

“Everything you see, we actually did. There was no CGI then. There was no way to fake it. I just put the pedal to the metal, and we went 90 miles an hour in city traffic,” he said. “The fact that nobody got hurt is a miracle. The fact that I didn’t get killed, the fact that some of the crew members didn’t get hurt or killed. That’s a chance I would never take again. I was young and I didn’t give a damn. I just went out and did it. I set out to make a great chase scene and I didn’t care about the consequences, and now I do.”

KANSAS CITY —A Kansas City-area man faces three felony charges, including Murder 2nd&nbsp;Degree, in connection with the shooting Wednesday of a man in his vehicle outside a Grandview residence, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.

Cameron K. Harper, 22, Grandview, currently faces Murder 2nd Degree, Armed Criminal Action and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm. The charging documents were originally under a court ordered seal to further the investigative process. That seal has been lifted.

According to court records filed Thursday, Grandview police were dispatched Wednesday evening to a residence in Grandview and found the victim of a shooting in a white vehicle. 

The incident was near two other shootings that evening. Upon arrival, police found four bullet holes in the windshield and seven bullet holes in the driver's side window. The suspect was driving a vehicle described as a green pickup truck with a lawn mower in the back. 

The defendant was picked up by Kansas City police and officers recovered a phone and a vehicle key, as well as a backpack and found a mask. A search of the green truck produced .40 shell casings in the second row of the vehicle, along with prescription bottles and documents with the defendant's name. 

Shell casings that matched to the crime scene also were found, as well as a .40 caliber handgun. Detectives also determined the key found on the suspect by police matched the truck.

Prosecutors filed charges against the defendant and asked a Jackson County judge to place them under seal in order to protect the on-going investigation. By late afternoon Thursday, prosecutors requested that the case be unsealed.&nbsp;

An investigation continues into at least two other nearby shootings Wednesday evening and allegations of earlier crimes.&nbsp;

"Much more work will be required by law enforcement and my office to complete investigations of what appear to be related shootings in south Kansas City and Grandview," Prosecutor Baker stated. "My office greatly appreciates the prompt and promising efforts by law enforcement officers in multiple jurisdictions and the prosecutors who responded. We also want to thank those in our community who stepped up to advance solving this case."

"This is a tragic loss of life but the investigation continues for the others injured in this crime spree. We're grateful that this arrest and these charges will protect our community." Prosecutors requested a $750,000 bond.

KANSAS CITY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a homicide and asking the public for help&nbsp;in identifying the suspect vehicle.

The homicide and several shootings occurred just after 8 a.m. Wednesday in the 11900 block of Smalley in the Kansas City suburb of Grandview Missouri, according to Police Captain Corey Carlisle. Police do not have a description of the driver of the vehicle. Police initially reported the suspect was Black male in a skull mask.

 </figure>JOHNSON COUNTY — A shooting early Sunday at a convenience store left a suspect dead and a Kansas police officer hospitalized after an exchange of gunfire, according to Lenexa police.Just after 7:30 a.m., police responded to a stolen vehicle call at the QuikTrip at 95th Street and Interstate 35, according to a media release. Officers located that car and the suspect in the stolen vehicle struck one of Lenexa police department's patrol vehicles and drove away.Police pursued the suspect northbound on Interstate 35 until the suspects left the vehicle and ran to a QuikTrip in the 4700 Block of Lamar Avenue in Mission.Police from multiple agencies were trying to arrest the suspects when gunfire broke out. A suspect later identified as 40-year-old&nbsp;Shannon Wayne Marshall of Ashland City, Tennessee was shot and killed and a Fairway Kansas police officer was shot and hospitalized. The other suspect was arrested and later identified as 32-year-old Andrea Cothran of Portland Tennesee.Cothran, a registered sex offender, is being held in Johnson County on&nbsp; requested charges of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, according to online jail records.She is listed on the Tennessee sex offender registry for a July 2019 conviction for solicitation to commit sexual exploitation of a minor. She has three previous convictions for child abuse and a probation violation for drugs, according to the Tennessee offender registry. She is scheduled for a court appearance in the case at 1:30p.m. Monday, according to online jail records.Police have identified the officer who was wounded. Sex offender jailed after chase, fatal gunfight that injured Kan. officer

JACKSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged child sex crimes.

On August 2,&nbsp;&nbsp;Jackson County Sheriff Detectives and Deputies served a search warrant on a residence located at 110 S. Pennsylvania Avenue in Holton, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

Deputies arrested 30-year-old Taylor Bryant Day of Holton for the alleged sexual solicitation of a small child.

He is being held in the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of criminal solicitation indecent liberties of a child, child endangerment, possession of a hallucinogenic drug and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Morse.

Kansas man accused of sexual solicitation of a small child

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspect on drug allegations after a traffic stop.

Just after&nbsp;11p.m. August 3, a deputy with the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on a red 2003 Dodge Dakota&nbsp;with an expired license plate near SW Topeka Boulevard and SE 45th Street with an expired license plate, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

During the investigation, the deputy located illegal narcotics.

The driver, Crystle T. Moten, 37, of Topeka, had a misdemeanor warrant for her arrest. Moten was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections (SNDOC) for her warrant and on requested charges of&nbsp; possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, operating a motor vehicle with an expired tag and no vehicle liability insurance.

The passenger, Jeff D. Pressgrove, 55, of Topeka, was arrested, booked into the SNDOC and on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Wanted Kansas suspect caught transporting meth

MISSION, Kan. (AP) — A shooting early Sunday at a Kansas convenience store left a suspect dead and a police officer shot and hospitalized, Lenexa police said.

Leading up to the shooting, Lenexa police said they were searching for a reportedly stolen car. When officers found the vehicle, police said the driver struck a patrol car and fled.

Lenexa police chased the vehicle on Interstate 35 until two suspects got out and ran to a QuikTrip convenience store in Mission, Kansas.

Police from multiple agencies were trying to arrest the suspects when gunfire broke out. A suspect was shot and killed, and an officer was shot and hospitalized. Another suspect was arrested.

Lenexa police have not yet identified either of the suspects or the injured officer.

“The city has basically made it so burdensome to stay open, they can’t stay open,” attorney Charley O’Hara said. “He feels like he was singled out and blamed for a lot of things that happen all over the city and they don’t blame other people.”

The city suspended City Nightz's liquor license for 30 days after the shooting, and the year-old club never reopened.

Nine people were shot July 2 and two others trampled in the chaos afterward. No one died. Police have said that the seven men and two women who were shot ranged in age from 22 to 34.

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a series of business burglaries and have a suspect in custody.&nbsp;

On July 31, police were dispatched to Killer Custom Wraps,&nbsp;631 NW Tyler Court in Topeka, in reference to a burglary to the business, according to Lt. Edward Stanley.

Upon arrival it was found that multiple business adjacent to Killer Custom Wraps had been burglarized as well. 

The Topeka Police Department received information from the public that a vehicle believed to be involved with the burglary had been seen in the North Topeka Area. 

On August 1, police located the vehicle in question in the 1300 Block of NW Jackson Street and took one individual into custody believed to be involved in the burglary.

After further investigation, Topeka Police Department Detectives served a search warrant at the location. and recovered items related to the burglary, as well as narcotics and paraphernalia.

As a result of the investigation police arrested 43-year-old Fredrick C. Lowe, of Topeka on requested charges of Burglary, Possession of stolen property,&nbsp;Possession of Marijuana and Possession of drug paraphernalia. He remains jailed on a $5,000 bond, according to online jail records.

Man accused in series of Kansas business burglaries

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a wanted Kansas man on multiple charges after a standoff.

Just after 10:30 a.m. Thursday, police received information that a wanted Suspect was in the 2600 block of SE 11th Street in Topeka, according to Police Lt. Edward Stanley.

Officers responded to the area, and determined that the suspect identified as&nbsp;Feliciano J. Anguiano IV, 21, of Topeka, was inside of a residence. 

Crisis negotiators responded to the scene, and Anguiano eventually exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident

As a result of the investigation,&nbsp; Anguiano was transported to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections for the following charges on requested charges of&nbsp;&nbsp;Felony Obstruction, a Felony Shawnee county arrest warrant and a&nbsp;Misdemeanor Jackson county arrest warrant, according to Stanley.

Wanted suspect arrested after standoff at Kansas home

KANSAS CITY —The FBI, working with its state and local partners, identified and located 200 victims of sex trafficking during a nationwide enforcement campaign, called "Operation Cross Country," according to a media release from the agency this week.

 The operation also led to identification or arrest of 126 suspects of child sexual exploitation and human trafficking offenses and 68 suspects of trafficking were identified or arrested.&nbsp;

FBI agents from the Kansas City Field Office worked with law enforcement partners from Wichita Police, Overland Park, Kansas Police Department, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Sedgwick County, Kansas Exploited and Missing Children’s Unit, Department of Homeland Security Investigations, KCMO Police and many other regional law enforcement agencies.

Through targeted operations and collaborative efforts, Operation Cross Country achieved significant milestones in recovering victims, apprehending offenders, and raising public awareness about these heinous crimes. The FBI and its partners located 59 minor victims of child sex trafficking and child sexual exploitation offenses and located 59 actively missing children during its 2-week operation in July.

"Sex traffickers exploit and endanger some of the most vulnerable members of our society and cause their victims unimaginable harm," said Attorney General Merrick B. Garland. "This operation, which located 59 actively missing children, builds on the tremendous work the FBI has undertaken over many years to rescue minor victims and arrest those responsible for these unspeakable crimes. We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners across the country to prevent human trafficking; increase detection, investigation, and prosecution of human trafficking crimes; and expand support and services to protect and empower survivors."

The FBI-led nationwide initiative, in partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), focused on identifying and locating victims of sex trafficking and investigating and arresting individuals and criminal enterprises involved in both child sex and human trafficking. Law enforcement agencies conducted targeted operations to identify and apprehend offenders, dismantling criminal networks and preventing further harm to victims. Those suspects identified will be subject to additional investigation for potential charges.

"Human traffickers prey on the most vulnerable members of our society, and their crimes scar victims—many of them children—for life. The FBI's commitment to combatting this threat will never waver, and we will continue to send our message that these atrocities will not be tolerated," said FBI Director Christopher Wray. "This operation would not be possible without the commitment and collaboration from our state and local law enforcement partners, and it demonstrates our continued focus on actively pursuing the criminals responsible for these heinous violations and connecting those impacted with dedicated victim services and resources."

A multidisciplinary team (MDT), to include victim specialists, child/adolescent forensic interviewers, and other victim service personnel, in addition to special agents, ensures a victim-centered, culturally responsive, trauma-informed investigative response. The FBI MDT works with state and local partners to make resources available to meet the unique needs of trafficking victims.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Victim specialists provide services based on the individual needs of human trafficking victims, to include crisis intervention, emergency food and clothing, transportation to receive emergency services, and locating shelter or housing. The victim specialists also serve as conduit between the victims and the investigative team to help ensure they are receiving case updates, as appropriate.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Behind every statistic, there is a person with dreams, aspirations, and the right to live a life free from child sex trafficking and exploitation. As a society we must work together to ensure the protection, support, and empowerment of those impacted by this heinous crime." said Michelle DeLaune, President and CEO of the National Center for Missing &amp; Exploited Children.  </figure>KANSAS CITY —The FBI, working with its state and local partners, identified and located 200 victims of sex trafficking during a nationwide enforcement campaign, called "Operation Cross Country," according to a media release from the agency this week. The operation also led to identification or arrest of 126 suspects of child sexual exploitation and human trafficking offenses and 68 suspects of trafficking were identified or arrested.&nbsp;FBI agents from the Kansas City Field Office worked with law enforcement partners from Wichita Police, Overland Park, Kansas Police Department, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Sedgwick County, Kansas Exploited and Missing Children’s Unit, Department of Homeland Security Investigations, KCMO Police and many other regional law enforcement agencies.Through targeted operations and collaborative efforts, Operation Cross Country achieved significant milestones in recovering victims, apprehending offenders, and raising public awareness about these heinous crimes. The FBI and its partners located 59 minor victims of child sex trafficking and child sexual exploitation offenses and located 59 actively missing children during its 2-week operation in July."Sex traffickers exploit and endanger some of the most vulnerable members of our society and cause their victims unimaginable harm," said Attorney General Merrick B. Garland. "This operation, which located 59 actively missing children, builds on the tremendous work the FBI has undertaken over many years to rescue minor victims and arrest those responsible for these unspeakable crimes. We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners across the country to prevent human trafficking; increase detection, investigation, and prosecution of human trafficking crimes; and expand support and services to protect and empower survivors."The FBI-led nationwide initiative, in partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), focused on identifying and locating victims of sex trafficking and investigating and arresting individuals and criminal enterprises involved in both child sex and human trafficking. Law enforcement agencies conducted targeted operations to identify and apprehend offenders, dismantling criminal networks and preventing further harm to victims. Those suspects identified will be subject to additional investigation for potential charges."Human traffickers prey on the most vulnerable members of our society, and their crimes scar victims—many of them children—for life. SAN DIEGO (AP) — Two U.S. Navy sailors were charged Thursday with providing sensitive military information to China — including details on wartime exercises, naval operations and critical technical material.

The two sailors, both based in California, were charged with similar moves to provide sensitive intelligence to the Chinese. But they were separate cases, and it wasn’t clear if the two were courted or paid by the same Chinese intelligence officer as part of a larger scheme. Federal officials at a news conference in San Diego declined to specify whether the sailors were aware of each other's actions.

Both men pleaded not guilty in federal courts in San Diego and Los Angeles. They were ordered to be held until their detention hearings, which will take place Aug. 8 in those same cities.

U.S. officials have for years expressed concern about the espionage threat they say the Chinese government poses, bringing criminal cases in recent years against Beijing intelligence operatives who have stolen sensitive government and commercial information, including through illegal hacking.

The pair of cases also comes on the heels of another insider-threat prosecution tied to the U.S. military, with the Justice Department in April arresting a Massachusetts Air National Guardsman on charges of leaking classified military documents about&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/russia-ukraine">Russia’s war in Ukraine</a>&nbsp;and other sensitive national security topics on Discord, a social media platform popular with people playing online games.

U.S. officials said the cases exemplify China’s brazenness in trying to obtain insight into U.S. military operations.

“Through the alleged crimes committed by these defendants, sensitive military information ended up in the hands of the People’s Republic of China,” said U.S. Attorney Randy Grossman for the Southern District of California. He added that the charges demonstrate the Chinese government’s “determination to obtain information that is critical to our national defense by any means, so it could be used to their advantage.”

Jinchao Wei, a 22-year-old sailor assigned to the San Diego-based USS Essex, was arrested Wednesday while boarding the ship. He is accused of passing detailed information on the weapons systems and aircraft aboard the Essex and other amphibious assault ships that act as small aircraft carriers.

Prosecutors said Wei, who was born in China, was approached by a Chinese intelligence officer in February 2022 while he was applying to become a naturalized U.S. citizen, and admitted to the officer that he knew the arrangement could affect his application. Even so, at the officer’s request, Wei provided photographs and videos of Navy ships, including the USS Essex, which can carry an array of helicopters, including the MV-22 Ospreys, according to an indictment unsealed Thursday.

The indictment alleges Wei included as many as 50 manuals containing technical and mechanical data about Navy ships as well as details about the number and training of Marines during an upcoming exercise.

Wei continued to send sensitive U.S. military information multiple times over the course of a year and even was congratulated by the Chinese officer once Wei became a U.S. citizen, Grossman said. He added that Wei “chose to turn his back on his newly adopted country” for greed.

The Justice Department charged Wei under a rarely-used Espionage Act statute that makes it a crime to gather or deliver information to aid a foreign government.

After pleading not guilty in San Diego, Wei was assigned a new public defender who declined to comment following the hearing. Wei did not visibly react when read the charges.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Fred Sheppard told the judge that Wei had passed information to Chinese intelligence as recently as two days ago. He said Wei, who also went by the name Patrick Wei, told a fellow sailor in February 2022 that he was “being recruited for what quite obviously is (expletive) espionage.”

Sheppard said Wei has made $10,000 to $15,000 in the past year from the arrangement with the unnamed Chinese inelligence officer. If convicted, he could face up to life in prison.

The officer instructed Wei not to discuss their relationship, to share sensitive information and to destroy evidence to help them cover their tracks, officials said.

The Justice Department also charged sailor Wenheng Zhao, 26, based at Naval Base Ventura County, north of San Diego, with conspiring to collect nearly $15,000 in bribes from a Chinese intelligence officer in exchange for U.S. naval exercise plans, operational orders and photos and videos of electrical systems at Navy facilities between August 2021 through at least this May.

The information included operational plans for a large-scale U.S. military exercise in the Indo-Pacific region, which detailed the location and timing of naval force movements.

The Associated Press was unable to reach the federal public defender assigned to Zhao, who pleaded not guilty in Los Angeles.

The indictment further alleges that Zhao photographed electrical diagrams and blueprints for a radar system stationed on a U.S. military base in Okinawa, Japan.

Prosecutors say Zhao, who also went by the name Thomas Zhao, also surreptitiously recorded information that he handed over. If convicted, Zhao could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.

It was unclear if federal officials were looking at other U.S. sailors and if the investigation was ongoing.

At the Pentagon, Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder told reporters that, “I think we have clear policies and procedures in place when it comes to safeguarding and protecting sensitive information. And so if those rules are violated, appropriate action will be taken.” He declined to discuss any specifics of the cases.

U.S. Attorney Grossman said the charges reflect that China “stands apart in terms of the threat that its government poses to the United States. China is unrivaled in its audacity and the range of its maligned efforts to subvert our laws.”

He added that the U.S. will use “every tool in our arsenal to counter the threat and to deter China and those who have violated the rule of law and threaten our national security.”

Junction City police said Stanley Edward Schultz has been arrested on requested charges including five counts of Vehicle Burglary, two counts of Theft and one count of Damage to Property.&nbsp;

Police reported that the alleged vehicle burglaries occurred at different locations including 912 Kramer Court, 2617 Deerfield Boulevard, 906 Jackalope Court, 2614 Deerfield Boulevard and 364 Grant Avenue Lot 258.

Police report an arrest on a series of vehicle burglary allegations

CRAWFORD COUNTY&nbsp;–&nbsp;The Joint Fentanyl Impact Team (JFIT), made up of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP), and Homeland Security Investigations, along with the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, Pittsburg Police Department, and the Bourbon County Sheriff’s Office made a large seizure of fentanyl.

A JFIT investigation into suspicious activity led authorities to execute a search warrant on Wednesday, Aug. 3, around 10:30 a.m., in Pittsburg, Kansas, according to a media release.

During the search, law enforcement uncovered an estimated 5,000 counterfeit oxycodone pills, commonly referred to as “dirty 30s.” The pills are suspected to contain fentanyl, and weighed approximately six pounds. Also seized was a large amount of cash, and numerous firearms and ammunition.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Horace Wright, 39, of Pittsburg, was arrested on requested charges of&nbsp; possession of opiates, opium, or narcotic drugs, possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug sale paraphernalia, criminal possession of firearm, and aggravated child endangerment.

Amanda Lee, 43, of Pittsburg, was arrested on requested charges of&nbsp; possession of opiates, opium, or narcotic drugs, possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug sale paraphernalia, criminal possession of firearm, and aggravated child endangerment.

The suspects were booked into the Crawford County Jail.&nbsp;

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating a convenience store robbery have made an arrest.

Just after 10p.m. July 30, police responded to a robbery at the Kwik Shop, 2619 SW 21st Street in Topeka, according to Police Captain Aaron Jones.

 Officers received information from numerous citizens leading to a suspect vehicle. Just before 11:30 p.m., officers spotted the vehicle near 20th and SW Lincoln Street. Officers attempted a traffic stop and the driver fled. Citizens again helped officers by providing information that led them back to the 2000 block of SW Lincoln where the car was reportedly parked in a garage and the occupants had fled into a residence on the same property. 

All attempts to contact the occupants of the house failed. Investigators applied for and were granted a search warrant for the residence.

Just before 6a.m. Tuesday, two people exited the house and were taken into custody.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As a result of the information and evidence discovered to this point, Donald A. Henderson III, 26 of Topeka has been arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Criminal Use of a Firearm by a Felon, and Felony Obstruction.

Police released the second person detained, according to Jones.

 </figure>SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating a convenience store robbery have made an arrest.Just after 10p.m. July 30, police responded to a robbery at the Kwik Shop, 2619 SW 21st Street in Topeka, according to Police Captain Aaron Jones. Officers received information from numerous citizens leading to a suspect vehicle. Just before 11:30 p.m., officers spotted the vehicle near 20th and SW Lincoln Street. Officers attempted a traffic stop and the driver fled. Citizens again helped officers by providing information that led them back to the 2000 block of SW Lincoln where the car was reportedly parked in a garage and the occupants had fled into a residence on the same property. All attempts to contact the occupants of the house failed. Investigators applied for and were granted a search warrant for the residence.Just before 6a.m. Tuesday, two people exited the house and were taken into custody.&nbsp;&nbsp;As a result of the information and evidence discovered to this point, Donald A. Henderson III, 26 of Topeka has been arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Criminal Use of a Firearm by a Felon, and Felony Obstruction.Police released the second person detained, according to Jones.

Just after 7:30p.m. Wednesday, police arrested 34-year-old Corneal Johnson of Manhattan in the 400 block of Fremont Street, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Johnson was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for 4 counts of sexual exploitation of a child; possess media of a child &lt;18. The crime was originally reported to RCPD on April 27, 2023. Johnson was issued a total bond of $50,000 and was confined at the time of this report.&nbsp;

Manhattan man jailed for alleged child sex crimes

KANSAS CITY —The remains located on July 26 while serving an arrest warrant at a home in the 1500 Block of Eagle Drive in Pleasant Hill have been positively identified to be that of 78-year-old Bonnie Gooch, according to a media release from police.

Officers were at the home to serve a warrant on Gooch for failure to appear at a July 24, hearing in connection with an April robbery.

 Officers knocked on the front door, at which time it came partially open. Officers entered the residence where they located the body of a deceased female in a rear bedroom of the home.&nbsp;

The scene was processed, and the body was taken by Frontier Forensics for further examination.&nbsp;Foul play is not suspected. 

Gooch, who had two previous bank robbery convictions,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bank-robbery-missouri-fcaa66a6c78eefc0e7bdf1df4a88c8c2">was charged in April</a>&nbsp;in a holdup in Pleasant Hill. In court documents, Cass County prosecutors allege that she passed a note to a teller demanding “13,000 small bills,” adding “thank you sorry I didn’t mean to scare you.” Surveillance video also captured her banging on the counter, asking the teller to hurry.

Gooch's earlier robbery convictions were in California in 1977 and in the Kansas City suburb of Lee's Summit in 2020. Her probation in the second heist ended in November 2021.
