RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a woman for alleged driving under the influence with children in the vehicle.

Just after 1a.m. Saturday, police&nbsp;were called to 1300 block of Wreath Ave. in Manhattan to the report of a car hitting a parked car, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Officers arrested 26-year-old&nbsp;Elizabeth Bennett of Manhattan who also had children in the car she was driving. Officers determined she was also intoxicated, according to the report.&nbsp; She was booked on requested charges of&nbsp;driving under the influence, endangering a child, and two counts of aggravated endangering a child.

RCPD: Woman accused of DUI after crash with children in car

RENO COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a stabbing and have made an arrest.

On Friday, Sheriff's deputies were sent to a welfare check of Jane Stotts at her residence on 95th Avenue, according to a media release from the Reno County Sheriff's office.

The welfare check was initiated by her husband Larry Stotts after he dropped off at the Love’s store in McPherson with stab wounds. The individual who dropped him off told Love’s employees that Larry needed medical attention and left the area.

Deputies arrived at the Stott's residence and determined Jane Stotts was fine. While deputies were at the Stotts home, the Hutchinson Police Department had been sent to a suspicious vehicle on West Second Avenue. The vehicle was registered to Larry and Jane Stotts and appeared to have blood inside of it.

The vehicle has been seized by the Reno County Sheriff's Office for processing and they arrested Paul Stotts, the son of Larry and Jane Stotts on a requested charge for attempted first degree murder. He was booked into jail on Friday and is currently in the Reno County Correctional Facility, according to the release.

Larry Stotts was transported to Wesley Medical Center, has been treated for his wounds and is recovering.

Kan. man with a history of crime accused of stabbing his father

KANSAS CITY (AP) — A federal appeals court has vacated a stay of execution for a Missouri inmate who is scheduled to be executed on Tuesday for his role in the deaths of two jailers.

Michael Tisius, 42, was sentenced to death after being convicted of killing Randolph County jailers Jason Acton and Leon Egley during a failed escape attempt.

U.S. District Judge Stephen R. Bough&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/execution-missouri-jailer-death-row-killing-9056cc0ebbfa8e82be8942c56583377b">issued the stay</a>&nbsp;on Wednesday and ordered an evidentiary hearing after Tisius' attorneys argued that a juror in his 2010 resentencing was illiterate, which is not allowed under state law.

On Friday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit said the lower court did not have jurisdiction to order the stay.

Keith O’Connor, an attorney for Tisius, said his team will appeal the decision, the Kansas City Star&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/state/missouri/article276067031.html">reported</a>.

Missourians to Abolish the Death Penalty and the Missouri NAACP have asked Republican Gov. Mike Parson to grant Tisius clemency, citing a history of abuse, that he was 19-years-old at the time of the killings, and his remorse and rehabilitation since the shootings.

In 2000, Tisius and Tracie Bulington went to the Randolph County jail to help Bulington's boyfriend, Roy Vance, escape, prosecutors said. Tisius shot and killed the jailers. The plot failed because the intruders couldn’t find the cell keys.&nbsp;Tisius and Bulington were arrested on the day of the shootings in Wathena, Kan., about 130 miles west of Huntsville.

Defense attorneys have argued that Tisius intended to order the jailers into a holding cell and free Vance and other inmates.

Tisius' defense team issued a video earlier this week in which Vance said he planned the escape attempt and manipulated Tisius into participating.

Bulington and Vance are serving life sentences.

Court reinstates death penalty order for killer captured in Kansas

MONTGOMERY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a standoff at a Kansas home.

Just after 9p.m. Wednesday, police asked the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office for assistance with a disturbance at 903 E. 3rd Street in Caney, Kansas, according to Sheriff Ron Wade.

Deputies learned 55-year-old Patrick Griffin had made threats to cause harm to other occupants of the residence with a large hatchet.  The victims, who were able to exit the residence unharmed prior to law enforcement arrival, stated Griffin had thrown the hatchet at one of them causing them to fear for their safety. 

 The victim’s advised Griffin was still inside the residence and may also be armed with a handgun.  Deputies with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and officers with Caney Police Department surrounded the residence and began making announcements to Griffin via their PA, requesting Patrick exit the residence. 

Deputies obtained a warrant to search the residence for Griffin.  Utilizing drones and robots, deputies were able to visually clear the majority of the first floor, with the exception of two upstairs rooms due the doors being closed. 

 Deputies eventually made entry and manually cleared the first floor with no signs of the suspect.&nbsp; Deputies were able to breach both doors to the upstairs rooms and redeploy the robot.  Again, no signs of Griffin were observed. 

 Deputies then entered the rooms and manually cleared them. They located Griffin behind a false wall, hidden behind insulation. He was verbally non-compliant but deputies were able to take him into custody without further incident. 

 The hatchet was located and seized as evidence.  No firearms were located.&nbsp; Griffin is being held without bond in the Montgomery County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated Assault w/ a Deadly Weapon and Felony Interference with a Law Enforcement Officer.

Robot helped make arrest of Kansas man who had a hatchet

KANSAS CITY —A Kansas woman has been charged with multiple felony counts in connection with a recent shooting at a hotel in Blue Springs, Missouri, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.

Samantha J. Thrasher, 24, faces two counts of Assault 1st Degree and two counts of Armed Criminal Action.

According to court records, Blue Springs police officers were dispatched&nbsp; on May 20, to a hotel in the 700 block of NW South Outer Road in Blue Springs after a caller said a shot had been fired inside the hotel. 

Officers located two victims, one an adult who had been shot multiple times and the other, a juvenile, was wounded in the elbow. Video surveillance showed the defendant taking a gun from a vehicle. She went into the hotel lobby, where she earlier was involved in an altercation, and fired multiple shots, striking both victims.

The Blue Springs Police Department has an active arrest warrant&nbsp; Thrasher's arrest. She is considered armed and very dangerous, so do not attempt to apprehend but call 911 if you see her.

KANSAS CITY (AP) — A former history professor at Missouri State University charged in the stabbing death of a colleague was found not guilty Friday by reason of insanity.

Greene County Judge David Jones announced his ruling in the case of Edward Gutting, who was charged with first-degree murder in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/3ff42b181e3844d5a9f396257d509642">2016 killing of Marc Cooper</a>&nbsp;inside Cooper's Springfield home. Cooper's wife, Nancy, was injured but survived, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.news-leader.com/story/news/local/2023/06/02/gutting-declared-not-guilty-by-reason-of-insanity-in-msu-murder-case/70280927007/">Springfield News-Leader</a>&nbsp;reported.

The trial was delayed for several years in part by a series of mental evaluations. The judge's ruling followed a six-day trial.

Marc Cooper, 66, who had retired, suffered more than 40 stab wounds. Gutting's lawyers said the attack was the result of a schizophrenic hallucination. Gutting was diagnosed as mentally ill by several doctors after his arrest.

But prosecutors said Gutting killed Cooper in a rage fueled by alcohol and stress that stemmed from a series of work-related slights and insults. The tipping point, they said, was Gutting's belief that Cooper meddled in Gutting's pursuit of a tenured position.

No sentencing date was set but Jones said Gutting could be housed at a state mental health facility “for the rest of his life.

Professor not guilty by reason of insanity in stabbing death of colleague

WASHINGTON (AP) — Two&nbsp; men who stormed the U.S. Capitol with other members of the far-right Oath Keepers group were sentenced Friday to three years in prison for seditious conspiracy and other charges — the latest in a historic string of sentences in the Jan. 6. 2021 attack.

David Moerschel, 45, a neurophysiologist from Punta Gorda, and Joseph Hackett, a 52-year-old chiropractor from Sarasota, were&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/oath-keepers-seditious-conspiracy-conviction-2b9fb724c9839524d00ee389959e0e62">convicted in January</a>&nbsp;alongside other members of the antigovernment extremist group for their roles in what prosecutors described as a violent plot to stop the transfer power from former President Donald Trump to President Joe Biden after the 2020 election.

Both men were among the lower-level members charged with seditious conspiracy. Moerschel was sentenced to three years in prison and Hackett got three and a half years.

All told, nine people associated with the Oath Keepers have been tried for seditious conspiracy and six were convicted of the rarely used Civil War-era charge in two separate trials, including the group's founder Stewart Rhodes. Rhodes was sentenced last week to 18 years in prison — a record for a Jan. 6 defendant. Three defendants were cleared of the sedition charge but found guilty of other Jan. 6 crimes.

Moerschel and Hackett helped amass guns and ammunition to stash in a Virginia hotel for a so-called “quick reaction force” that could be quickly shuttled to Washington, prosecutors said. The weapons were never deployed. Moerschel provided an AR-15 and a Glock semi-automatic handgun and Hackett helped transport weapons, prosecutors said.

On Jan. 6, both men dressed in paramilitary gear and marched into the Capitol with fellow Oath Keepers in a military-style line formation, charging documents stated.

“The security of our country and the safety of democracy should not hinge on the impulses of madmen,” Justice Department prosecutor Troy Edwards said.

Moerschel told the judge he was deeply ashamed of forcing his way into the Capitol and joining the riot that seriously injured police officers and sent staffers running in fear.

“When I was on the stairs, your honor, I felt like God said to me, ‘Get out here.’ And I didn’t,” he said in court, his voice cracking with emotion. “I disobeyed God and I broke laws."

Moerschel was a neurophysiologist who monitored surgical patients under anesthesia before his arrest, though he's since been fired and now works in construction and landscaping. A former missionary, he is married with three children.

Hackett similarly said he remembered feeling horrified as stepped foot in the Capitol that day: “I truly am sorry for my part in causing so much misery,” he said.

He originally joined the group after seeing vandalism at a commercial area near his house during the summer of 2020, when protests against police brutality were common, his attorney Angela Halim said. “He did not join this organization because he shared any beliefs of Stewart Rhodes,” she said.

Still, he later attended an “unconventional warfare” training, and in the leadup to Jan. 6 he repeatedly warned other Oath Keepers about “leaks” and the need to secure their communications, and later changed his online screen names, authorities have said.

“Taken together, his messages show he perceived the election as an existential threat,” said prosecutor Alexandra Hughes.

How the chiropractor and father ended up storming the Capitol, though, is “hard to wrap one's head around,” said U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta. The group's increasingly heated online conversations and false claims of a stolen election “can suck you in like a vortex make and make it very difficult to get out.”

Neither man was a top leader in the group, and both left shortly after Jan. 6. Both sentences were far lower than the 12 years prosecutors sought for Hackett and 10 for Moreschel.

Moreschel was in the Capitol for about 12 minutes, and didn’t do anything violent or scream at police officers, Mehta noted. He also handed his guns over to police.

“Sentencing shouldn’t be vengeful, it shouldn’t be such that it is unduly harsh simply for the sake of being harsh,” said the judge, who also imposed a three-year term of supervised release for both men.

Moerschel’s attorneys had asked for home confinement, arguing that he joined the Oath Keepers chats shortly before the riot and was not a leader.

“He was just in the back following the crowd,” attorney Scott Weinberg told the judge.

Defense attorneys have long said there was never a plan to attack the Capitol and prosecutors' case was largely built on online messages cherry-picked out of context.

The charges against leaders of the Oath Keepers and another far-right extremist group, the Proud Boys, are among the most serious brought in the Justice Department’s sprawling riot investigation. Prosecutors have also won seditious conspiracy convictions in the case against former Proud Boys national chairman Enrique Tarrio and three other group leaders in what prosecutors said was a separate plot to keep T

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a California woman on federal drug allegations.

On Wednesday, a Wichita Police Department Narcotics Detective conducted a traffic stop on a Chevy Equinox with a California license plate on northbound Interstate 35 at the K-15 exit for several alleged traffic violations, according to a media release.

The driver, and sole occupant of the vehicle later identified as 27-year-old Elia Moreno-Castro of Inglewood, California, told the detective that she was traveling from Southern California to Wichita.

 During the investigation, the detective observed factors consistent with criminal activity. A police K9 was deployed around the vehicle and alerted to the presence of a drug odor. 

   During a search of the vehicle, the detective located a large bundle of drugs, weighing approximately one kilogram in the rear cargo area of the vehicle. 

The officer arrested Moreno-Castro was arrested and booked her requested&nbsp;federal charges of possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute.

The DEA responded to assist with the investigation and the case will be presented to the US Attorney’s Office for consideration of federal prosecution.&nbsp;

Just before 11p.m. Thursday, police arrested&nbsp;Edwin Gonzalez, 28, of Manhattan on a Riley County District Court warrant for aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery, and kidnapping, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Police capture 2nd suspect in alleged Manhattan kidnapping

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement authorities have an active arrest warrant for 24-year-old Samantha J. Thrasher for felony Assault 1st Degree relating to a May 20, shooting at a local hotel, according to the Blue Springs Police Department.

As a result of this investigation, police arrested David Suri, 41, of Scott City on requested charges of Lewd and Lascivious Behavior and Sexual Battery.

Just after 11a.m. Thursday, Michael W. Friess, 38, of Wichita, was arrested after surrendering to KBI agents and KHP troopers. He was booked into the Harvey County Jail on multiple arrest warrants.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Between December 2022 and February 2023, the KBI investigated thefts involving a suspect who broke into Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) located on college campuses and stole the money they contained. The thefts occurred at campuses in several Kansas counties. The same suspect also broke into rural fire departments and stole lifesaving rescue equipment.&nbsp;

Man accused of ATM thefts on college campuses in Kansas

BROWN COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a 100mph chase.

Just after 3:30p.m. Wednesday, sheriff's deputies heard Nemaha County radio traffic of a possible stolen a red Dodge TRX pickup out of Seneca, eastbound on U.S. 36 HWY at a high rate of speed, according to Brown County Sheriff John Merchant.

&nbsp; A Brown County deputy was on U.S. 75 at the time and located the suspect vehicle and started a pursuit&nbsp; east out of Fairview on U.S. 36.

It was reported that the male driver, later identified at 19-year-old Adrian Richardson was wearing a mask while the pursuit was taking place. &nbsp;As the vehicle was nearing Hiawatha, law enforcement vehicles downgraded their efforts for the safety of the public and temporarily lost sight of the vehicle.&nbsp; A short time later, a Hiawatha police officer located the vehicle and assisted in following&nbsp; the suspect vehicle as it headed south on U.S. 73

&nbsp;As the vehicle headed towards Horton, it was reported that it intentionally tried running&nbsp; motorists off of the roadway numerous times at speeds of over 100mph, according to Merchant.&nbsp; &nbsp; In Horton, the vehicle turned east and continued towards Atchison on U.S. 73 where the pursuit was terminated several miles west of the Atchison city limits.

Within a few minutes of entering Atchison, the suspect vehicle was located near Mound Street at Washington.&nbsp; Deputies arrested Richardson close to&nbsp; the Benedictine College ball field, without incident.

Richardson, who claims to be homeless, is being held in the Brown County jail on requested charges of Aggravated Assault, Reckless Driving, Flee or Attempt to Elude Law Enforcement, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Interference of Law Enforcement Officers, No Drug Tax Stamp and Felony Theft. He may face additional charges, according to Merchant as the investigation continues through the Brown County Sheriff's Office.

Richardson also had 2 active warrants, Johnson County including a&nbsp; $5000&nbsp; Felony Failure to Appear Theft, and Jackson County Missouri for Felony Damage to Property.

The vehicle was towed to the Brown County Sheriff's office as evidence.

The suspect was also found to be in possession of opiate pills that had been reported stolen by him and drug paraphernalia. 

Officers arrested Darryl Klemick, 18, of Manhattan on requested charges of criminal threat, possession of stolen property, criminal restraint, criminal deprivation of property, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of an opiate, and two counts of theft. 

Klemick remains confined in the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $61,000.

Teen accused of criminal threat, theft at Manhattan home

RILEY COUNTY– Law enforcement authorities investigating two previously unreported knife attacks have arrested 45-year-old&nbsp; Jarman Morgan of Manhattan, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department.

The stabbings occurring in the summer months of 2020 and spring months of 2021 in Manhattan.

Morgan is reported to have stabbed the same 35-year-old man in the head and face area on these occasions. The victim did not receive medical care for either of the stabbings and is still alive, according to the RCPD.

Officers arrested Morgan Wednesday on a Riley County District Court warrant for two counts each of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery.

He has previous convictions for aggravated battery, aggravated burglary, theft, burglary, disorderly conduct, DUI, violations of the offender registration act and for drugs, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections. He has been listed as a registered Kansas drug offender since March of 2018.

RCPD jails registered offender for alleged attempted murder

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — A federal judge on Wednesday halted next week's&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/execution-missouri-15298c399e436f00c42f5174594605dd">scheduled execution</a>&nbsp;of a man convicted of killing two Missouri jailers amid questions about the literacy of a juror in the case.

U.S. District Judge Stephen Bough ruled that Michael Andrew Tisius' execution at the state prison in Bonne Terre should be delayed to give the court time for a hearing on the juror.

The delay comes after Tisius' lawyers earlier this month claimed a juror in his 2010 resentencing could not read or write.

Missouri law requires jurors to be able to read and speak English.

In an affidavit signed by the juror May 3, the juror stated “someone at the courthouse” helped him fill out his juror questionnaire.

“I told the Courthouse employee that I could not read," according to an excerpt from the affidavit included in Bough’s ruling. "The Courthouse employee took me into a private room. The Courthouse employee read word for word the questionnaire and filled in the answers for me.”

The judge wants more information. Bough wrote that another affidavit by the juror, which was signed May 7, conflicts with his earlier statement.

“I sometimes say that I cannot read or write, but it is more accurate to say that I cannot read or write very well," the juror stated in the May 7 affidavit, adding that he approached Tisius' case with “an open mind.”

In 2000, Tisius and Tracie Bulington entered the lobby of the jail in Huntsville, aiming to break out Bulington’s boyfriend, Roy Vance, prosecutors said. Tisius — then 19 — fatally shot Randolph County jailers Jason Acton and Leon Egley during the attempted jail break. The plot failed because the intruders couldn’t find the cell keys.

Tisius and Bulington were arrested on the day of the shootings in Wathena, Kan., about 130 miles west of Huntsville.

Defense attorneys had argued that Tisius intended only to order the jailers into a holding cell and free Vance and other inmates.

Bulington, and Vance are serving life sentences.

Missourians to Abolish the Death Penalty and the Missouri NAACP on Tuesday asked Republican Gov. Mike Parson to spare Tisius' life, citing his age at the time of the killings, along with other factors.

A spokeswoman for Parson didn't immediately return an Associated Press request for comment on Tisius on Wednesday.

Judge halts execution of man captured in Kan., convicted in jail break killing

KANSAS CITY —A suspect accused in the April 5, shooting of three Kansas police officers released from jail by mistake on April 20 in Platte County, Missouri is back in jail.&nbsp;

The U.S. Marshal's service took 21-year-old Jae’veon Marquice Mitchell-Locke into custody on Wednesday in Kansas City. He was booked back into the Platte County Jail just after 8p.m., according to online jail records. He faces additional requested charges of operating a motor vehicle in a careless manner, resisting arrest and possession of marijuana, according to online jail records.

Mitchell-Locke and two other suspects in the April gunfight&nbsp;during an undercover fentanyl trafficking investigation are charged in Wyandotte County with attempted murder, aggravated battery against law enforcement, criminal discharge of a firearm at an occupied building or vehicle, aggravated endangering a child, aggravated assault of law enforcement officers and distribution or possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute, according to online jail records.

 </figure>KANSAS CITY —A suspect accused in the April 5, shooting of three Kansas police officers released from jail by mistake on April 20 in Platte County, Missouri is back in jail.&nbsp;The U.S. Marshal's service took 21-year-old Jae’veon Marquice Mitchell-Locke into custody on Wednesday in Kansas City. He was booked back into the Platte County Jail just after 8p.m., according to online jail records. He faces additional requested charges of operating a motor vehicle in a careless manner, resisting arrest and possession of marijuana, according to online jail records.<figure>

Kan. officer shooting suspect released by mistake is back in custody

A Kansas man allegedly shut down the electricity to half of a hotel and ended up in the hospital after an incident in Salina late Tuesday afternoon.

Just after 5p.m., police and EMS were dispatched to Spangles, 1720 W. Crawford Street for report of a person who was covered in burns, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.

Forrester said the man, identified as Jay Kroulik, 44, of Cuba, Kansas, had walked to the Spangles parking lot seeking help after he allegedly removed a fuse from an Evergy transformer box behind Value Inn and Suites, 1640 W. Crawford Street, and was shocked. The fuse was found on the ground near the transformer box.

The removal of the fuse caused electricity to go out in half of the Value Inn and Suites building, according to Forrester said.&nbsp;

EMS transported Kroulik to Salina Regional Health Center with burns over approximately 30 percent of his body. It is believed that Kroulik was later transferred to a burn unit in Wichita, however Forrester did not have details about that.

Kroulik faces requested charges of Trespassing and Theft when he is released from the hospital.&nbsp;An Evergy crew restored power to the hotel.

Police: Kan. man critically burned removing fuse from transformer box 

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for multiple allegations after a brief standoff.

Just after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, officers were attempting to locate a suspect wanted in connection with several person felonies at an address in the 2200 block of SW Plass Avenue in Topeka, according to Lt. Donna Eubanks.

The suspect identified as 22-year-old Logan M. Cunningham came outside armed with a handgun. He then retreated inside the home while officers called for additional resources. Cunningham briefly barricaded himself inside the home, but he voluntarily came outside just after 10:15 a.m. and was taken into custody.&nbsp;

Officers&nbsp; transported him to the Law Enforcement Center for questioning from the Criminal Investigations Bureau.

As a result of the investigation Cunningham was arrested on requested charges of Aggravated Assault, Battery, Interference with law enforcement officer, Domestic battery, Aggravated domestic battery, and Kidnapping.

Kidnapping, assault suspect jailed after standoff at Kan. home

DICKINSON COUNTY —After over a one month investigation into the distribution of methamphetamine and fentanyl, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit has made two arrests, according to Sheriff Jerry Davis.

Just after 3a.m. May 26, deputies assigned to the Drug Enforcement Unit conducted a traffic stop with a Buick Le Sabre in the 3400 Block of Kansas 15 Highway to execute a search warrant on the vehicle. Jordan Daniel Greene, 37, and Justyne Marie Hanson, 40, both of Abilene were taken into custody.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of the Abilene Police Department, executed a search warrant at a residence in the 400 Block of NW 3rd Street in Abilene.&nbsp; Officers seized methamphetamine, fentanyl, and drug paraphernalia during the search of the vehicle and the residence.

Greene was booked into the Dickinson County Jail on requested charges of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute opioid, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, and no drug tax stamp.

2 accused of selling fentanyl, meth in Dickinson County

HUTCHINSON — Andrew D. Patterson accepted a plea agreement and pled guilty in Reno County District Court before Judge Daniel D. Gilligan on Wednesday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Patterson pled one year to the day from his arrest on charges related to threats toward&nbsp;Dillons Distribution Center&nbsp;and Hutchinson Middle School-8.&nbsp;

He is convicted of one count of attempted murder in the second degree, carrying a five-year sentence. In addition to that charge, he will have to register as a violent offender for 15 years. &nbsp;

Patterson’s intention was to kill employees at Dillons Distribution Center.&nbsp; He also pled guilty to two counts of felony criminal threat.&nbsp;One toward Dillons Distribution Center, where he worked as a security guard, the other toward his mother, Dianna Albee. Those charges each carry a sentence of five to 17 months. &nbsp;

Patterson was detained during a May 31, 2022, traffic stop after law enforcement received information from his aunt and grandmother that he made threatening comments.&nbsp;&nbsp;

During the stop, police found detailed plans in Patterson’s vehicle to carry out an act of mass violence, but they did not find any weapons. &nbsp;

A search warrant was executed at his residence, where additional evidence related to the plan was collected. Weapons were not found at the home either.&nbsp;

Texts between Patterson and Albee&nbsp;revealed photos of firearms, a “kill list” with his then-coworkers' names and reasons why he wanted to kill them. &nbsp;

Albee said via text she would try to get help for Patterson, which he refuted, saying he did not believe there was help for him. &nbsp;

Albee maintains that her son, nicknamed “Dade,”&nbsp;has mental health illnesses. &nbsp;

Other texts included Patterson saying, “I like violence” and that he wanted to kill at least 24 people, specifically more people killed than during the Uvalde, Texas, massacre.&nbsp;

“What began as a cry for help culminated in my son's arrest,” Albee said in an email to Hutch Post. “Dade struggled for years with mental illness, only to be vilified and portrayed as a monster when he gained the courage to seek help. And now, he has been held for the past year (with absolutely no treatment) when he was voluntarily seeking the help he desperately needed.”&nbsp;

Two of Patterson’s original four charges before amendments were filed as attempted terrorism charges. Reno County District Attorney Tom Stanton explained why those were amended. &nbsp;

“At the time he was arrested, he was not capable of actually carrying out a crime, even though he had the plans,” Stanton said. “He had intentions of purchasing a weapon but had not.” &nbsp;

Stanton felt obligated to take Patterson's mental health — and the fact he had no prior arrests or a history of violent acts — into account. &nbsp;

Stanton asked the court to allow Patterson to undergo evaluation at Larned State Hospital, a psychiatric hospital located in Pawnee County. &nbsp;

Stanton explained that, in good conscience, and with respect to the community and Patterson, he could not allow someone with potential mental health issues to serve the lifetime sentence carried out for attempted terrorism — especially when the spectrum between criminal threat and attempted terrorism is vast. &nbsp;

“What I was looking at when I was turning this case out, was the difference between someone making a threat and getting probation, and somebody committing a terrorist act and getting life in prison,” Stanton said. “I looked at all the facts in the case, I think he [Patterson] is mentally ill.” &nbsp;

In prosecuting the case, Stanton looked for a way to recognize Patterson’s mental health and protect the community. &nbsp;

If, while during his stay at Larned State Hospital, Patterson is found mentally ill, he will serve the rest of his sentence at the facility in Larned. If not, then he will be reprimanded to the Kansas Department of Corrections proper. &nbsp;

I think the key that we have here protects the citizens and recognizes the fact he might possibly need mental health treatment.” &nbsp;As part of the plea deal,&nbsp;time for the two counts of felony criminal threat will run concurrently with the sentence for attempted murder. &nbsp;Sentencing will be postponed until Patterson undergoes a psychiatric evaluation at Larned State Hospital. Until then, because of Larned State Hospital’s wait time,&nbsp;Patterson will remain jailed. &nbsp; Patterson remains incarcerated with his bond set at $3 million.&nbsp;
