SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal weekend shooting have identified the victim as Kirk Sexton, 34, of Topeka.

Just after 9:30 p.m. Saturday, police were dispatched to report of a shooting in the 900 Block of SW 8th Street in Topeka, according to Police LT Ronnie Connell.

First responders found Sexton suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.&nbsp; Police have not reported an arrest or additional details.

Police ID Kansas man who died in weekend shooting

BOURBON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on child porn allegations.

According to the United State's Attorney, 41-year-old Jesse Edwards of Fort Scott was indicted on one count of distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. 

Homeland Security is investigating the case.&nbsp; After an arrest on Wednesday in Bourbon County, Edwards remains jailed without bond in Butler County, according to online jail records.

Just before 4p.m. Wednesday, authorities booked 30-year-old Donquez Ladale Jones into the Sedgwick County Jail, according to online jail records.

Law enforcement had<a href="https://www.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriff/most-wanted/donquez-ladale-jones/"> issued an alert</a> for Jones. He was last known to live in Wichita, according to a 2016 most wanted alert. Jones is being held on a <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=385896">$100,000 bond</a>&nbsp;on requested charged of criminal sodomy with a child.

Authorities have not released details on the arrest.&nbsp;  He is scheduled for a control hearing on July 25, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Police capture Kan. man wanted for child sex crimes in 2016 

PUEBLO COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a murder and asking for help in locating 33-year-old Tyler Jordan Mitchell.

On Wednesday, officials in Colorado issued a warrant for Mitchell’s arrest for the crime of 1st Degree Murder in relation to the death of a 33-year-old woman, according to a media release.

Mitchell is described as a white male, approximately 5-foot-8 and 140 pounds. He has a large tattoo on his left forearm that states “Est. 1989”. 

His&nbsp; right arm is deformed, and he usually keeps it in a shoulder sling. 

He is frequently seen on the north side of Pueblo, but may be in route to the Wichita, Kansas area.

Mitchell should be considered dangerous and if you see him, do not approach him.&nbsp;

Search continues for murder suspect who may be headed to Kansas

&nbsp;JACKSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects following a Wednesday afternoon theft in northeast Kansas.

Just after 3 p.m.July 13, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office was called in reference to a theft at the Dollar General Store in Mayetta, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

  It was reported that two individuals involved in the incident allegedly stole a scanner, printer and cell phone from an ice vendor at the store. 

 The two suspects on a black motorcycle traveled south on U.S. Highway 75. The pair had also allegedly caused a disturbance at the Holton Walmart earlier in the day, according to Morse.

The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Brian Hill assisted with the search for the pair.  Both subjects were located approximately 30 miles south of Topeka on the Kansas Turnpike by the Kansas Highway Patrol. 

 The two were arrested and transported to the Jackson County Jail.  The two suspects were identified as Jason Darrell Mathes, 47, of Kyle, Texas and Stephani Elyse Rodriquez, 34, of Austin, Texas. They remain jailed on requested theft charges, according to online jail records.

Sheriff: Couple arrested after Kan. Turnpike motorcycle chase

KHIMKI, Russia (AP) — A lawyer for WNBA star Brittney Griner at her drug possession trial in Russia on Friday gave the court a U.S. doctor's letter recommending she use medical cannabis to treat pain.

Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and standout for the Phoenix Mercury, was arrested at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport in February after customs officials said they found vape canisters containing cannabis oil in her luggage. She faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted on charges of transporting drugs.

In court last week, Griner pleaded guilty and acknowledged possessing the canisters but said she had no criminal intent and said they were in her luggage because she packed hastily in her return to Russia to play for the UMMC Ekaterinburg basketball team during the WNBA's offseason.

In Russia’s judicial system, admitting guilt doesn’t automatically end a trial. Since that plea, her court sessions have focused on in-person and written testimony to her good character and athletic prowess.

Griner wore a Nirvana T-shirt as she sat inside the defendant's cage that is customary in Russian courtrooms. At one point, she held up a photo of fellow WNBA players wearing her name and No. 42 on their uniforms in tribute during part of Sunday's All-Star Game in Chicago.

“The attending physician gave Brittney recommendations for the use of medical cannabis," said her lawyer, Maria Blagovolina. "The permission was issued on behalf of the Arizona Department of Health.”

Medical marijuana is not legal in Russia.

The defense on Friday also submitted tests she underwent as part of an anti-doping check, which didn't detect any prohibited substances in her system.

The next hearing of Griner's case was scheduled for July 26.

U.S. President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken have said they are doing all they could to win her release, as well as that of other Americans the U.S. considers “wrongly detained” by Russia, including former Marine Paul Whelan who is serving 16 years on an espionage conviction.

Washington may have little leverage with Moscow, though, because of strong animosity over its military operation in Ukraine.

“In the hearings yesterday and today what became very clear is the tremendous amount of respect and admiration both in the United States and here in Russia where Miss Griner has been playing basketball for seven years, not only for her professional achievements but for her character and integrity,” U.S. Embassy charge d'affaires Elizabeth Rood said outside the courthouse in the Moscow suburb of Khimki, where the airport is located.

The director and team captain of UMMC Ektaerinburg testified on her behalf on Thursday.

Russian media have speculated that Griner could be swapped for Russian arms trader Viktor Bout, nicknamed “the Merchant of Death,” who is serving a 25-year sentence in the U.S. after being convicted of conspiracy to kill U.S. citizens and providing aid to a terrorist organization.

Russia has agitated for Bout’s release for years. But the wide discrepancy in the seriousness of their cases could make such a trade unpalatable to Washington. Others have suggested that Griner could be traded along with Whelan, who is serving 16 years in Russia on an espionage conviction that the U.S. has described as a setup.

The State Department’s designation of Griner as wrongfully detained moves her case under the supervision of its special presidential envoy for hostage affairs, effectively the government’s chief hostage negotiator. The classification has irritated Russia.

Asked about the possibility of Griner being swapped for a Russian jailed in the U.S., Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, the senior Russian diplomat, has noted that until her trial is over “there are no formal or procedural reasons to talk about any further steps.”

Ryabkov warned that U.S. criticism, including the description of Griner as wrongfully detained and dismissive comments about the Russian judicial system, “makes it difficult to engage in detailed discussion of any possible exchanges.”

Griner’s detention has been authorized through Dec. 20, suggesting the trial could last months. Griner’s lawyers, however, said they expect it to conclude around the beginning of August.

Lawyer: Former Big 12 star had doctor's note for cannabis use in Russia

SEDGWICK COUNTY— A third suspect arrested in connection with the July 4th weekend double murder made his first court appearance in the case.

Just after 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, five days after the authorities asked for help to find him, sheriff deputies located and arrested Luong in east Wichita, according to Sheriff's Lt. Benjamin Blick.&nbsp; 

Tips came in and detectives produced other information that led to an apartment complex in the 3700 Block of North Rock Road in&nbsp; Wichita, according to Sheriff Jeff Easter.&nbsp; He was arrested without incident.

Hieu Luong, 42 of Wichita, is charged with attempted 1st degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Two other suspects have already been charged. David Baeza, 42 of Wichita, is charged with two counts of voluntary manslaughter. Joseph Ponse, 43 of Wichita, is charged with attempted 1st degree murder.&nbsp;

Just after 5 a.m. July 3, sheriff's deputies were sent to a shooting call in the 4400 block of south Rock Road in rural Sedgwick County, according to Lt. Benjamin Blick.&nbsp;

At the scene, first responders found<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20076411">&nbsp;Baeza</a>&nbsp;on the side of the road suffering from gunshot wounds, according to Colonel Brian White with the sheriff's department. EMS transported Baeza to an area hospital for treatment and later arrested him.

During an additional search of the rural property, deputies found a man and woman deceased in the backyard of a residence the 4300 block of South Rock Road. They died from apparent gunshot wounds. The woman was later identified as 43-year-old Saren Negrete-Perez of California.&nbsp;

While processing the scene, investigators found <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=18714449">Ponse Jr.&nbsp;</a>&nbsp; Deputies booked him into the Sedgwick County jail.&nbsp; The victims did not live at the location where they were killed.&nbsp;

Ponse and Baeza remain jailed each on a bond of $500,000.&nbsp; They are due back in court on July 18, according to the district attorney's office.

Luong is also<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=23165"> being held on a $500,000 bond</a>&nbsp;and is scheduled to return to court July 22, according to the district attorney's office.

Suspect charged in connection with Kan. double murder

KANSAS CITY (AP) — An intoxicated pilot was arrested after landing a small aircraft early Friday on Interstate 70 southeast of Kansas City after radioing that he had run out of fuel, authorities said.

The landing about 2:30 a.m. east of Grain Valley, roughly 20 miles southeast of Kansas City, closed westbound lanes of the highway for more than 2 1/2 hours, KCTV reported.

The plane had a “minor collision” with a guardrail but otherwise didn't hit anything, the&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/MSHPTrooperA/status/1547911523166629888">Missouri State Highway Patrol</a>&nbsp;tweeted.

The pilot was the only person on board. He suffered minor injuries and was taken to an area hospital for treatment after his arrest, the patrol said. Online arrest records identify the pilot 35-year-old John T. Seesing of Prairie Village. 

Seesing was arrested on requested charges of DWI, felony possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of less than 10 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Online records showed that the single-engine plane was 19 minutes into its flight from Warrensburg, Missouri, which is located about 20 miles&nbsp; southeast of the landing site.

The patrol said the pilot radioed that he had run out of fuel and had to make an emergency landing on the highway.

 </figure>KANSAS CITY (AP) — An intoxicated pilot was arrested after landing a small aircraft early Friday on Interstate 70 southeast of Kansas City after radioing that he had run out of fuel, authorities said.The landing about 2:30 a.m. east of Grain Valley, roughly 20 miles southeast of Kansas City, closed westbound lanes of the highway for more than 2 1/2 hours, KCTV reported.The plane had a “minor collision” with a guardrail but otherwise didn't hit anything, the&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/MSHPTrooperA/status/1547911523166629888">Missouri State Highway Patrol</a>&nbsp;tweeted.<div><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">The plane had ran out of fuel! ALLEN COUNTY– Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas&nbsp;woman for methamphetamine-related and weapons charges.

Just after 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation , along with the Humboldt Police Department, and the Allen County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at 507 Bridge St., Apt A6 in Humboldt, Kansas, according to the KBI. Officers found methamphetamine and a weapon.

SALINE —A Kansas man was arrested after a woman's car was burgled early Wednesday morning in north Salina.

The 38-year-old woman told police that at approximately 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, she had gotten into a verbal argument with a man she knew only as "Greg" in a parking lot near the 100 block of N. Wisconsin Street in Salina.

Cameron said that as she was leaving town a bit later, she realized that her Gold Smoke vape pen was missing from her Honda Civic, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.

A check of her car revealed that a Razer laptop and a Bluetooth device also were missing. Total loss was estimated at $2,385. Cameron told police that she inadvertently left the car unlocked.

Forrester said a neighbor had surveillance video showing a man entering Cameron's car. An officer was able to identify the man as Gregory Dyrness, 29, of Salina.

Police located Dyrness at his apartment in the 100 block of N. Wisconsin Street and arrested him on a requested charge of vehicle burglary, Forrester said.

Police: Surveillance video helps catch Kan. car burglary suspect

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A hearing is set for Thursday for the man arrested for hitting four members of a Nickerson family, killing one and critically injuring two others.

Court records show 33-year-old Michael Hurley is set to appear in district court at 12 p.m. CDT on four counts of aggravated assault, and one count each of driving impared and no drivers license. One of the aggravated assault charges will likely be amended to a charge of murder.

Hurley hit Nickerson school teacher and coach Trey Jones, his wife, current Assistant Superintendent Amy Jones and their two children who were standing on the sidewalk. Trey died last week of his injuries while both Ava and Amy were in critical condition. Another child was not seriously injured.

There is still some question on how this case will move through the Kentucky legal system. If Hurley is charged with murder, it will likely be heard in what is called commonwealth court which is a higher court in the state that handles serious felony cases. What happens to the other potential charges would be taken up then.

The count of murder was expected to be filed before Hurley's Thursday hearing.&nbsp;

Suspect in fatal crash involving Kan. family due back in court

KEARNEY, Neb.-A former candidate for the United States Senate was arrested during the Nebraska GOP Convention in Kearney.

According to Kearney police, at around 10:55 a.m., on July 9, officers responded to a disturbance at the Younes Conference Center, 416 Talmadge Street.

Officers arrived and made contact with private security officers who were providing security for the event.

Security personnel informed officers that a man identified as Matthew Innis, 51, of Crete, had been previously barred from attending the event. Police said Innis approached the main entrance to the convention center and demanded entry.

Police said when he was refused entrance, Innis tackled a security officer to the ground, and off-duty police officers and other security personnel came to assist.&nbsp;

Following further investigation, police determined there was probable cause to arrest Innis on suspicion of 3rd-degree assault and 2nd-degree trespassing, both misdemeanors.

Innis was transported to the Buffalo County Detention Center where he was processed and released after posting bond. The case has been referred to the Buffalo County Attorney for the filing of formal charges.

Innis unsuccessfully ran for the United States Senate in 2020.

Former US Senate candidate arrested at GOP Convention

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal drug deal shooting and have made an arrest.

Just after 7:30p.m. Monday, deputies were sent to a shooting call near the intersection of 47th Street South and Clifton in Wichita, according to Lt. Benjamin Blick.

 The call location was quickly updated to the QuikTrip at 47th Street South and Hydraulic. When deputies arrived at the convenience store they found a 19-year-old later identified as Donovan Graves of Wichita, in a vehicle deceased from a gunshot wound. Two adult woman were with him.

Deputies were directed to a mobile home in the 5200 block of south Clifton where the shooting occurred. 

Deputies arrested 20-year-old Brian Youngman of Wichita at the mobile home and booked him on requested charges of first degree murder.

Investigators learned that Graves, 19-year-old Lanita Baugh and 20-year-old Myrashia Griffin drove to the 5200 Block of South Clifton for a drug transaction, according to Sheriff Jeff Easter. 

Graves attempted to rob a 17-year-old girl of marijuana, according to Easter. Youngman pulled a gun and shot Graves during the robbery.

The two women with Graves were also booked on requested charges of murder and aggravated robbery, according to Blick.&nbsp; Deputies also arrested the 17-year-old girl for marijuana possession with intent to sell, according to Easter. She and Graves knew each other.

Authorities will present the case to the Sedgwick County District Attorney on Friday, according to Easter.

Kan. man killed during attempt to steal marijuana from teen

KANSAS CITY, KAN.– A Kansas man was sentenced to 12-years in prison for his role in an international drug trafficking ring, according to the United State's Attorney.

In April, Jovanny Medina, 24, of Kansas City, Kansas, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine. 

According to court documents, Medina took part in a conspiracy to traffic illegal narcotics sourced from his family in Mexico throughout the Kansas City metro area. 

His primary role in the operation was to import and distribute multikilogram quantities of methamphetamine, collect drug debts, and transport bulk United States currency from Kansas City to Mexico.

“As long as drug smugglers infiltrate our borders and peddle poison into our communities, the Department of Justice will remain vigilant in arresting and prosecuting offenders with the deliberate

intention of dismantling these criminal enterprises,” said U.S. Attorney Duston Slinkard.

Kansas man admits distributing drugs from Mexico in KC area

On Tuesday, Sheriff deputies located and arrested 42-year-old Hieu Trong Luong in east Wichita, according to Sheriff's Lt. Benjamin Blick.

On July 8, authorities asked the public for help to locate Luong.&nbsp;

At the scene, first responders found 42-year-old&nbsp;<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20076411">David Baeza</a>&nbsp;of Wichita on the side of the road suffering from gunshot wounds, according to Colonel Brian White with the sheriff's department. EMS transported Baeza to an area hospital for treatment and later arrested him.

While processing the scene, investigators found 43-year-old&nbsp;<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=18714449">Joseph Ponse Jr.&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;of Wichita. JOHNSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect after an incident involving a weapon.

Just after 1a.m. Sunday police responded to an armed disturbance in the 9100 Block of Renner Road in Lenexa, according to Lenexa Police.

At the scene, officers learned a suspect forced his way into a home and fired a gun at someone in the residence.&nbsp; Nobody was injured and police took a suspect into custody.

The suspect was known to the residents at the home, according to police.

RILEY COUNTY— Authorities have made an arrested in connection with a house fire Sunday in Manhattan.

Investigators have determined the fire was intentional, according to Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Almes. Police arrested Mahbooba Babrakzai, 37, of Manhattan on requested charges that include four counts of aggravated arson.

 Babrakzai remains confined in the Riley County Jail on a total bond of $50,000.

Just before 4p.m. on Sunday, fire crews were dispatched to a fire at a home a 903 Thurston Street in Manhattan, according Almes.

As crews arrived, they found a 1-story duplex with heavy smoke showing from the front.&nbsp; One occupant received smoke inhalation but refused treatment by Riley County EMS on scene.&nbsp; Two lizards were rescued from 901 Thurston by firefighters.&nbsp;The fire was extinguished within 20 minutes. Four adults and one child were displaced from 901 Thurston Street and one adult was displaced from 903 Thurston Street.&nbsp;

Loss is estimated at $10,000 to contents and $50,000 to the structure.&nbsp;

Update: Fire that displaced 6 at Manhattan duplex intentionally set

KANSAS CITY — A Kansas City man pleaded guilty in federal court Friday to committing a hate crime by shooting a local teenager eight times in an attempted murder that was motivated by the victim’s sexual orientation, according to the United State's Attorney.

Malachi Robinson, 26, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Brian C. Wimes to one count of violating the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. Robinson, who has been in federal custody since he was indicted by a federal grand jury on Aug. 10, 2021, will remain in federal detention until his sentencing hearing, which has not yet been scheduled.

By pleading guilty, Robinson admitted that he shot the victim, identified in court records as “M.S.,” approximately eight times with a Taurus 9mm pistol in an attempt to kill him because of his sexual orientation, causing life-threatening injuries.

“Violence against others, motivated by hatred of their sexual orientation, is unacceptable,” said U.S. Attorney Teresa Moore of the Western District of Missouri. “Such callous disregard for the life of a teenage victim, gravely wounded in a failed murder attempt, must be challenged by a commitment to protect the civil rights of all our citizens. When those rights are threatened, the Justice Department will act to hold the violators accountable.”

“As today’s plea indicates, any act of violence motivated by bias, hate or discrimination toward anyone is not only reprehensible but will not be tolerated by any law enforcement agency and is unwelcome in our country,” said Special Agent in Charge Charles Dayoub of the FBI’s Kansas City Field Office. “Every individual has the right to live without fear of being attacked or harassed regardless of their sexual orientation. The FBI is committed to protecting those rights and will aggressively investigate those who violate them.”

“This defendant is being held accountable for violently attempting to end the life of someone because of his sexual orientation,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “This attempted murder is a reminder that hate crimes against the LGBTQI+ community are real and must be confronted. Violent acts targeting people based on their sexual orientation are heinous crimes that have no place in our country. The Justice Department will continue to use our civil rights laws to pursue justice for survivors and others impacted by bias motivated crimes.”

According to the plea agreement, after a chance meeting at the Kansas City Public Library on May 29, 2019, Robinson and M.S. talked briefly over Facebook Messenger before leaving the library. Robinson then walked with M.S. in the Swope Park area under the guise of looking for a place to engage in a sex act. Around the same time, Robinson wrote separately to his girlfriend that he “might shoot this boy” because of his sexual orientation. When Robinson and M.S. ultimately entered a wooded area nearby, Robinson pulled out his pistol and fired repeatedly at M.S.

Robinson fled through the woods toward his apartment building, and continued to engage in attempts to avoid detection or arrest. Later that day, and in the days that followed, Robinson told others that he shot M.S. because of his sexual orientation.

Under federal statutes, Robinson is subject to a sentence of up to life in federal prison without parole. The maximum statutory sentence is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes, as the sentencing of the defendant will be determined by the court based on the advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigation by the U.S. Probation Office.

Hate crime: KC man admits shooting teen over sexual orientation

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man after an altercation after a vehicle crash.

Just after 6:30 p.m. Thursday, police responded to 1819 NE Burgess CT in Topeka on a possible hostage situation, according to Lt. Manual Munoz.

While in route to the call, officers were advised that a mobile home trailer at the address had been struck by a vehicle.

As a result of the investigation police arrested Jayden Robert Evans, 20, of Topeka and transported&nbsp; him to Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Child Endangerment, Criminal Threat, Felony Criminal Damage to Property

The investigation revealed that there was no actual hostage situation. Only minor injuries were reported at the scene, according to Munoz.

Kan. man accused of assault after crash into mobile home

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities investigating a 4th of July weekend double murder in rural Kansas are asking the public’s assistance in locating&nbsp; 42-year-old Hieu Trong Luong. He is also known as Sunny, according to Sheriff's Lt. Benjamin Blick.

Just after 5 a.m. Saturday, sheriff's deputies were sent to a shooting call in the 4400 block of south Rock Road in rural Sedgwick County, according to Blick.&nbsp;

During an additional search of the rural property, deputies found a man and woman deceased in the backyard of a residence the 4300 block of South Rock Road. They died from apparent gunshot wounds. The woman was later identified as 43-year-old Saren Negrete-Perez of California.&nbsp; Authorities have not released the name of the man who died.

While processing the scene, investigators found 43-year-old&nbsp;<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=18714449">Joseph Ponse Jr. </a>&nbsp;of Wichita. Deputies booked him into the Sedgwick County jail.

Investigators still have individuals they want to interview in connection with the case, according to White. "This was not a random act and drug activity is believed involved."&nbsp; The victims did not live at the location where they were killed.&nbsp;

Ponse and Baeza remain jailed each on a bond of $500,000.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Search continues for suspect in Kansas double murder

KANSAS CITY – A southwest Missouri man pleaded guilty in federal court Friday to kidnapping a Webb City, Mo., woman and threatening to kill her and her family unless she recanted her testimony in his state criminal case, according to the United State's Attorney.

Jeffrey Marsh, 34, of Oronogo, Mo., pleaded guilty before U.S. Chief Magistrate Judge David P. Rush to one count of conspiracy to commit kidnapping, one count of kidnapping, one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and one count of stalking.

Co-defendant Zaqouri Traves Archer, 33, of Joplin, pleaded guilty on July 21, 2021, to his role in the kidnapping conspiracy and to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Marsh and Archer admitted they kidnapped a victim identified in court documents as “N.J.” and transported her across states lines from Kansas to Missouri.

N.J. was staying at a friend’s residence in Crawford County, Kan., because she was trying to hide from Marsh, her ex-boyfriend. Marsh was angry with her because she had reported him as a suspect when her Ruger handgun was stolen. Officers with the Oronogo Police Department had executed a search warrant on Marsh’s residence on Jan. 26, 2020. They located N.J.’s stolen firearm in Marsh’s bedroom, as well as other firearms, and stolen property. Marsh was charged with receiving stolen property and unlawful possession of a firearm in the Jasper County Circuit Court.

On Feb. 2, 2020, N.J. watched the Super Bowl at her friend’s residence and then walked out to her car to go to work. When she opened the front passenger door and placed her purse on the seat, Marsh grabbed her and told her to get into the vehicle. She began screaming and fell to the ground in an attempt to get her firearm out of her purse. She felt the barrel of a firearm placed against the back of her head, and Marsh told her to stop screaming or he would shoot her in the head. In the meantime, Archer – who, like Marsh, was dressed in all black – arrived. Archer had a Taser with him. N.J. was forced into the front passenger seat, with Marsh in the driver’s seat and Archer in the back passenger seat.&nbsp; Archer placed duct taped over N.J.’s eyes and face.

During the kidnapping, Marsh struck N.J. in her left jaw and told her she was going to recant her statements to the police.Archer eventually left, and Marsh took N.J. to her apartment in Webb City in his vehicle. Marsh continued to threaten, abuse, and assault N.J.&nbsp; Marsh held N.J. at gunpoint in her apartment and she was unable to leave that night. Marsh &nbsp;told N.J. to recant her earlier statement or her, her kids, and her whole family would die. Marsh told N.J. that she needed to make his weapon charges go away or her kids would die. N.J. later told investigators that she felt in fear of the death of, or serious bodily injury to herself,In the morning hours of Feb. 3, 2020, Marsh took N.J. back to her vehicle so she could go to the Oronogo Police Department to recant her statement.&nbsp; Once at the Oronogo Police Department, N.J. tried to recant her statement, but then disclosed her kidnapping.&nbsp; Later that day, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department located N.J.’s firearm and Marsh’s firearm taped to the bottom of a dresser with duct tape.Under federal law, it is illegal for anyone who has been convicted of a felony to be in possession of any firearm or ammunition. Marsh has two prior felony convictions for burglary, three prior felony convictions theft, and prior felony convictions for tampering with a motor vehicle, resisting an arrest, and possession of a controlled substance.Under federal statutes, Marsh is subject to a sentence of up to life in federal prison without parole.
