ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges after an arrest.

Just after 8:30a.m. Monday, officers responded to the 1500 block South 8th Street in Atchison to investigate reported trespassing, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Officers located a suspect later identified as 27-year-old Jason C. Price of Atchison several blocks.

Price ran from officers. He was apprehended in the 1000 block South 7th and he was in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, according to Wilson.

Price is jailed on requested charges that include possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.&nbsp; Price has been jailed in Atchison on a variety of charges over a dozen times in the past ten years, according to online jail records. He has previous convictions that include theft, burglary, criminal damage to property and attempt to flee and elude law enforcement, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

Police arrest Kansas man again after reported trespassing 

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Police have identified a person killed in a shooting at a party in Kansas City, Kansas, last week as a 16-year-old high school student. 

Police say Hugo Hernandez-Vasquez died at a hospital following the Friday night shooting in the city's Shawnee Heights neighborhood that also injured several others. 

Police say an 18-year-old woman at the party, Ximena Acevas-Vargas, later died of traumatic injuries that were not associated with the shooting, but did not give more details about how she died. Police continue to investigate both deaths, and no arrests have been reported.

Police ID 16-year-old who died in Kansas shooting

NEMAHA COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on child sex allegations.

On Dec. 3, police in Sabetha arrested 37-year-old&nbsp;Eric Puckett of Sabetha on requested charges of Aggravated Indecent Liberties With A Child, according to Nemaha County sheriff's booking report.

 Puckett remains in custody on a $100,000 bond, according to the county attorney's office. The crimes involving a child under the age of 14 allegedly occurred last month.

Kansas man jailed for alleged child sex crimes

MCPHERSON —Law enforcement authorities are&nbsp; investigating an alleged threat of violence towards the McPherson Middle School.

On Monday, the police received a report from USD 418- McPherson Middle School Administration concerning a 13-year-old student threatening to commit violence at the school, according to a media release.

McPherson police took the student into custody. There is no danger to students or the school, according to the release. A report on the incident will be forwarded to the McPherson County Attorney’s Office for review.

13-year-old arrested after alleged threat at Kan. middle school

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas woman on drug charges in connection with two recent investigation.

Just after 10a.m. Saturday, police arrested Allison R. Blakley, 25, Atchison, in the 700 block Kansas Avenue. She is being held due to a District Court warrant for possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, interference with law enforcement, and criminal damage to property, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

This warrant was associated with a case officers investigated&nbsp; on November 15 when a police officer on patrol observed Blakley, known to have active warrants for her arrest, as a passenger in a vehicle near 10th and U.S. 59 in Atchison.

The officer stopped the vehicle in the 1000 block U.S.59. Blakley got out of the vehicle and ran to a wooded area north of U.S. 59. She was apprehended and the subsequent investigation that followed led to the recovery of methamphetamine. During the warrant arrest on Saturday officers found Blakley to be in possession of methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia resulting in additional charges.

Since February 0f 2019, police have arrested her four time for failure to appear, according to online jail records.

Kansas woman hid in wooded area before arrest on drug warrant

JACKSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a car theft and have made an arrest.

Just before 3:30p.m. December 2, deputies located a 2013 white Ford Explorer near 262nd Road on U.S. Highway 75 that had been reported stolen out of Park City, Kansas., according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

Deputies conducted a traffic stop took two women into custody. The driver, Traci Elaine Reynolds, 37, of Wichita, is being held on requested charges of felony possession of stolen property, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a hallucinogenic drug, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The passenger, Jennifer Lynn Dewitt, 41, of Emporia, is being held on requested charges that include possession of methamphetamine, possession of a hallucinogenic drug, possession of drug paraphernalia and transporting an open container, according to Morse.

Deputies catch two Kansas women in stolen SUV

KANSAS CITY (AP) — Police in Kansas City are looking for a shooter or shooters after three men were shot in the city’s Westport Entertainment District early Monday, and one later died at a hospital.

Officers working off-duty in the district heard multiple gunshots fired just after 2:30 a.m., police said in a news release. Within seconds, a man ran up to the officers saying he had been shot.

Other officers found a second victim around the same time, and medics rushed that man to a hospital. Police said a third man who had been shot during the same incident was taken to a hospital by a private car.

One of the victims died a short time later from his injuries. Police did not immediately release the names of the victims and have not announced any arrests.

Police: Man dies after 3 shot in Kansas City's Westport District

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal stabbing and have made an arrest.

Just after 8 a.m. Saturday, police responded to a disturbance with a weapon at a home in the 600 block of South Green in Wichita, according to Officer Charley Davidson.

 Upon arrival, officers located a 64-year-old woman and a 73-year-old man with multiple stab wounds. 

EMS transported both victims to an area hospital where the 64-year-old woman died, according to Davidson. The 73-year-old man had serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation revealed at approximately 5 a.m. on Saturday, officers responded to a call in the 1800 block of North Kansas regarding a citizen who had 36-year-old Goldy L. Metcalf of Wichita at gunpoint for unlawfully entering his vehicle.&nbsp; 

Metcalf was cooperative with officers, cited for misdemeanor tampering with an automobile, and given a courtesy transport to St. Francis Hospital for medical treatment due to a previous injury to his mouth, according to Davidson.

Metcalf left St. Francis against medical advice and at approximately 8 a.m. stole a blue Ford pick-up in the 600 block of North Waco that was left running.

Metcalf fled in the truck and crashed it into a building in the 600 block of South Green. Metcalf then fled the scene and forced his way into the residence on South Green, where he stabbed the two victims. Metcalf fled from that residence and entered an unoccupied residence in 600 block of South Erie, and attempted to gain access to a church in the same block. Thanks to information provided by citizens, police responded quickly, located&nbsp; Metcalf and arrested him.

Metcalf is being held on requested charges of first-degree murder, aggravated battery, criminal deprivation of vehicle, two counts of criminal damage to property, criminal trespass, possession of paraphernalia, and an arrest and detain order.

Metcalf was paroled from prison in July and has prior convictions for aggravated battery, criminal possession of a firearm, burglary, flee law enforcement, and aggravated robbery, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Kan. felon left hospital, stole truck, killed woman in her home

KANSAS CITY, KAN. – A Kansas man was sentenced to prison Friday for his participation in a pair of armed bank robberies in which he fired several shots, including one at a customer about to enter the bank, according to the United State's Attorney.

In August 2021, a federal jury convicted Michael Shiferaw, 23, of Olathe of two counts of armed bank robbery and two counts of discharging a firearm in connection with a bank robbery. A federal judge sentenced Shiferaw to 28 years in prison.

Prior to Shiferaw’s trial, accomplice Kenya Breakfield, 23, of Olathe pleaded guilty to one count of armed bank robbery and one count of discharging a firearm in connection with a bank robbery.

Breakfield was sentenced in September 2021 to 76 months in prison.

In October 2018, Shiferaw and Breakfield went into a Wells Fargo bank in Leawood, Kansas, wearing Venom face masks and carrying handguns. Shiferaw fired a shot into the ceiling upon entering. He then pointed a gun at the tellers and forced them to fill a duffel bag with money. As they left the bank, Shiferaw fired another round into the ceiling, yelling “happy holidays”.

In March 2019, the men robbed the Commerce Bank in Roeland Park, Kansas. This time Breakfield stayed in the vehicle as the getaway driver, and Shiferaw entered the bank alone. Shiferaw fired four rounds during the robbery. When tellers attempted to hide under the counter, Shiferaw pointed his gun at them demanding to get into the vault. When one of the tellers attempted to get up, Shiferaw shoved him and pointed a gun at his head.

The defendants were arrested shortly after the second robbery.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, Olathe Police Department, Leawood Police Department, and Roeland Park Police Department all assisted in the investigation of the case.

Kansas man sentenced for pair of violent bank robberies

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A registered Kansas sex offender accused in violent knife attack made his first court appearance on Thursday. Jeffrey Elam, 27, was charged with attempted 2nd degree murder, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

 His next court date is 12/9/21.  The case has been assigned to Judge Christopher Magana.  Mr. Elam’s bond is $500,000.

Just after 11:30p.m. November 28,&nbsp; police responded to reports of a stabbing in the 100 block of North St. Francis in Wichita, according to a social media report from police.

When officers arrived, they located a 22-year-old woman with a stab wound to her abdomen. 

EMS transported her to an area hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation revealed the victim was walking to her vehicle and was approached and stabbed by a suspect later identified as Elam, who fled northbound through the alley. Police released a security camera video of him and made an arrest the following night.

Elam has previous convictions for aggravated indecent liberties with a child and is a registered Kansas sex offender, according to the KBI&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kbi.ks.gov/registeredoffender/OffenderDetails.aspx?Display=Main&amp;Id=28419">offender registry</a>. The&nbsp;crimes occurred in Wichita in 2012 and 2013 and included a 5-year-old victim. A jury convicted him of the crimes in 2014. Elam is due back in court December 9. He remains jailed on a bond is $500,000.

Kansas sex offender charged in knife attack on woman

HARPER COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday evening at an apartment complex in Harper, Kansas.

Just after 3:30 p.m. Friday, a citizen called police to report a man who was observed damaging property at the apartment complex at 1123 Jefferson Street in Harper, according to a media release from the KBI.

 When an officer from the Harper Police Department arrived he attempted to make contact with the subject who was standing in the doorway of his apartment. As the officer approached the man, later identified as Kenneth E. Smith, 61, of Harper, tried to slam the door on the officer. The officer caught the door and pushed his way inside the apartment.

Preliminary information indicates that as the officer entered he observed that Smith was armed with a knife. A physical struggle occurred. During the altercation the officer sprayed pepper spray at Smith. The struggle continued until Smith advanced toward the officer with the knife. The officer fired one shot which struck Smith in the right arm.

The officer attempted to create distance from Smith by backing out of the apartment. Smith then locked the apartment door. Officers from the Harper Police Department and deputies from the Harper County Sheriff’s Office responded and forced entry into the apartment. They engaged in another short struggle with Smith while taking him into custody.

EMS responded and transported Smith to a local hospital for treatment of the non-life threatening gunshot wound. He was then transferred to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita where he underwent surgery. Smith is currently in good and stable condition. No law enforcement officers were injured during this incident.

The KBI will conduct a thorough and independent investigation into this shooting. Once completed the findings will be turned over to the Harper County Attorney for review.&nbsp;

They engaged in another short struggle with Smith while taking him into custody.EMS responded and transported Smith to a local hospital for treatment of the non-life threatening gunshot wound. He was then transferred to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita where he underwent surgery. Smith is currently in good and stable condition. No law enforcement officers were injured during this incident.The KBI will conduct a thorough and independent investigation into this shooting. Once completed the findings will be turned over to the Harper County Attorney for review.&nbsp;

KBI: Man injured after knife fight, officer-involved shooting 

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Wyandotte County authorities have identified the suspect in two shootings that left a child dead and two other people injured before he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The sheriff's office said 38-year-old Keith Johnson Jr. is believed to have shot his girlfriend at Welborn Park in Kansas City, Kansas, on Wednesday. 

He then went to his home and barricaded himself inside. When officers eventually entered the home, they found Johnson and 7-year-old Cariya Reed dead from gunshot wounds. A 3-year-old boy was also shot. The boy and  Johnson's girlfriend remain hospitalized in critical condition.

Sheriff IDs 7-year-old, suspect killed in shooting at Kan. home

PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — The parents of a teen accused of killing four students in a shooting at a&nbsp;Michigan&nbsp;high school were caught early Saturday, several hours after a prosecutor filed involuntary manslaughter charges against them, officials said.

James and Jennifer Crumbley were captured in a commercial building in Detroit that housed artwork, Detroit Police Chief James E. White told a news conference. White said the couple “were aided in getting into the building,” and that a person who helped them may also face charges.

A Detroit business owner spotted a car tied to the Crumbleys in his parking lot late Friday, Oakland County Undersheriff Michael McCabe said in a statement. A woman seen near the vehicle ran away when the business owner called 911, McCabe said. The couple was later located and arrested by Detroit police.

A prosecutor filed involuntary manslaughter charges against the Crumbleys on Friday, accusing them of failing to intervene on the day of the tragedy despite being confronted with a drawing and chilling message — “blood everywhere” — that was found at the boy’s desk.

The Crumbleys committed “egregious” acts, from buying a gun on Black Friday and making it available to Ethan Crumbley to resisting his removal from school when they were summoned a few hours before the shooting, Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald said.

Authorities had been looking for the couple since Friday afternoon. Late Friday, U.S. Marshals announced a reward of up to $10,000 each for information leading to their arrests.

The Crumbley's attorney, Shannon Smith, said the pair had left town earlier in the week “for their own safety.” Smith told The Associated Press they would be returning to Oxford to be arraigned.

However, White said the Crumbleys “appeared to be hiding” in the building where they were found. He added that the parents appeared to be “distressed” when they were captured.

“Head down... just very upset,” he said of one of the parents. The couple was booked into the Oakland County Jail.

Earlier, the prosecutor offered the most precise account so far of the events that led to the shooting at Oxford High School, roughly 30 miles&nbsp; north of Detroit.

Ethan Crumbley, 15, emerged from a bathroom with a gun, shooting students in the hallway, investigators said. He’s charged as an adult with murder, terrorism and other crimes.

Under Michigan law, the involuntary manslaughter charge filed against the parents can be pursued if authorities believe someone contributed to a situation where there was a high chance of harm or death.

Parents in the U.S. are rarely charged in school shootings involving their children, even as most minors get guns from a parent or relative’s house, according to experts.

School officials became concerned about the younger Crumbley on Monday, a day before the shooting, when a teacher saw him searching for ammunition on his phone, McDonald said.

Jennifer Crumbley was contacted and subsequently told her son in a text message: “Lol. I’m not mad at you. You have to learn not to get caught,” according to the prosecutor.

On Tuesday, a teacher found a note on Ethan’s desk and took a photo. It was a drawing of a gun pointing at the words, “The thoughts won’t stop. Help me,” McDonald said.

There also was a drawing of a bullet, she said, with words above it: “Blood everywhere.”

Between the gun and the bullet was a person who appeared to have been shot twice and is bleeding. He also wrote, “My life is useless” and “The world is dead,” according to the prosecutor.

The school quickly had a meeting with Ethan and his parents, who were told to get him into counseling within 48 hours, McDonald said.

The Crumbleys failed to ask their son about the gun or check his backpack and “resisted the idea of their son leaving the school at that time,” McDonald said.

Instead, the teen returned to class and the shooting subsequently occurred.

“The notion that a parent could read those words and also know that their son had access to a deadly weapon that they gave him is unconscionable — it’s criminal,” the prosecutor said.

Jennifer Crumbley texted her son after the shooting, saying, “Ethan, don’t do it,” McDonald said.

James Crumbley called 911 to say that a gun was missing from their home and that Ethan might be the shooter. The gun had been kept in an unlocked drawer in the parents’ bedroom, McDonald said.

Ethan accompanied his father for the gun purchase on Nov. 26 and posted photos of the firearm on social media, saying, “Just got my new beauty today,” McDonald said.

Over the long Thanksgiving weekend, Jennifer Crumbley wrote on social media that it is a “mom and son day testing out his new Christmas present,” the prosecutor said.

Asked at a news conference if the father could be charged for purchasing the gun for the son, McDonald said that would be the decision of federal authorities.

In a video message to the community Thursday, the head of Oxford Community Schools said the high school looks like a “war zone” and won’t be ready for weeks. Superintendent Tim Throne repeatedly complimented students and staff for how they responded to the violence.

He also acknowledged the meeting of Crumbley, the parents and school officials. Throne offered no details but summed it up by saying, “No discipline was warranted.”

McDonald was asked about the decision to keep Crumbley in school.

“Of course, he shouldn’t have gone back to that classroom. ... I believe that is a universal position. I’m not going to chastise or attack, but yeah,” she said.

Asked if school officials may potentially be charged, McDonald said: “The investigation’s ongoing.”

Fugitive parents of alleged Michigan school shooter captured 

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged theft.

Just before 2:30p.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for theft in the 300 block of E. Poyntz Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Faith Furniture reported a 60-year-old man later identified as Mark Hornbaker of Stafford stole an Ashley Furniture box truck containing cabinetry and flooring. 

The Kansas Highway Patrol later caught and arrested Hornbaker on requested charges that included possession of stolen property. He is being held in the Geary County Jail.

RCPD: Kansas man stole box truck with cabinets, flooring

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Police have arrested a man suspected in the deadly shooting last month of another man outside a southeast Wichita restaurant. 

KAKE TV reports that 43-year-old <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=18824413">Marshall Green Jr. was arrested</a> Thursday on suspicion of intentional second-degree murder in the Nov. 10 shooting death of 45-year-old Monzell Brocks.

Police say Brocks was shot around 2:30 a.m. outside a Denny's restaurant, where he worked. Green is being held in the Sedwick County Jail without bond. Online records show Green has prior convictions and served prison terms for aggravated battery and voluntary manslaughter in Sedgwick County.

Arrest: Man killed outside Kan. restaurant where he worked

KANSAS CITY (AP) — A white Kansas City police detective who was convicted of shooting and killing a Black man will be sentenced on March 4, a judge ruled Thursday.

Eric DeValkenaere, 43, was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/crime-police-shootings-race-and-ethnicity-kansas-city-933d3aba9b37c83145fba5818d557c02">convicted last month</a>&nbsp;of second-degree involuntary manslaughter and armed criminal action in the shooting death of 26-year-old Cameron Lamb.

He faces up to four years on the manslaughter conviction and at least three years for the armed criminal action charge.

Attorney Molly Hastings said Thursday that DeValkenaere's defense team plans to appeal the conviction, The Kansas City Star&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/crime/article256288262.html">reported</a>.

DeValkenaere remains free on bond. He has been suspended from the department pending termination.

Lamb was shot on Dec. 3, 2019, as he was backing a pickup truck into a garage in his backyard.

DeValkenaere testified that he fired after Lamb pointed a gun at another detective.

Prosecutors argued the scene had been staged to make it appear that Lamb had a gun.

When he pronounced sentence, Jackson County Judge J. Dale Youngs said the officers had no probable cause to believe any crime had been committed, had no warrant for Lamb’s arrest and had no search warrant or consent to be on the property. He did not address the allegations that the crime scene was staged.

Sentencing scheduled for convicted Kansas City officer 

DOUGLAS COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal shooting and have two suspects in custody.

Just after 9p.m. November 24, police responded to a residence in the 200 Block of Yorkshire Drive in Lawrence reference a shooting, according to&nbsp;Lieutenant David Ernst.

Officers arrived on scene and located an 18-year-old male victim, later identified as Peyton Whitaker of Topeka, suffering from a gunshot wound.&nbsp; Whitaker was pronounced deceased at the scene.

On December 1, authorities from the Lawrence Police Department, Kansas Bureau of Investigation and McPherson County Sheriff’s Office arrested 20-year-old Mehki McDaniel and 24-year-old Ansley Fogle both of Topeka. They are in the McPherson County jail&nbsp;pending extradition. &nbsp;

McDaniel is being held on requested charges of 2nd&nbsp;Degree Murder and Felony Theft.&nbsp; Fogle was arrested on a requested charge of Interference with Law Enforcement and Obstructing Apprehension or Prosecution, according to Ernst.

SEDGWICK COUNTY—A Kansas man accused in a fatal Thanksgiving crash made his first court appearance on Wednesday.

According to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office,&nbsp;<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20065612">37-year-old Garett Meyers</a>&nbsp;of Andover was charged&nbsp; with involuntary manslaughter, aggravated battery, and driving while license is suspended or cancelled.&nbsp;

Just after 8p.m. on Thanksgiving, police responded to report of an accident at 13th and Hillside in Wichita, according to Officer Trevor Macy.

Investigators determined a truck driven by Myers struck an SUV driven by 65-year-old Leroy Grim, of Wichita, who was stopped westbound at the intersection. Grim was pronounced dead at the scene. EMS transported a 67-year-old woman in the SUV to an area hospital.

Police arrested Myers. He remains in custody on $250,000 bond after the judge on Wednesday increased it from $100,000.

Myers is scheduled back in court on Dec. 13, according to the district attorney's office.&nbsp;

Judge charges Kan. man in fatal Thanksgiving crash 

FORD COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a series of vehicle thefts and have made an arrest.

Just after 5:30a.m. Wednesday, police were called to an address on Robin Road in Dodge City for report of a stolen vehicle, according to a media release.

 Approximately an hour later police responded to an address on Elbow Bend for another stolen vehicle. While officers were investigating the stolen vehicles, multiple calls began to come in for burglaries to vehicles in the Fairway Drive, Elbow Bend and Shadow Lane areas. 

During the investigation of the stolen vehicles, officers found that one had OnStar. OnStar was contacted and the vehicle was tracked through GPS and located in the Arkansas River bed west of town. 

KHP and Ford County Sheriff’s deputies located the truck and three suspects, all Dodge City residents. 

Police arrested a 20 year old man, an 18 year old man and a 16 year old girl on multiple requested charges stemming from the vehicle theft and burglaries. 

 A few hours later the first vehicle was also located east of town also in the river bed. Charges will be filed with the Ford County Attorney’s Office for multiple charges both from the DCPD and Ford County Sheriff’s office.&nbsp;

 </figure>FORD COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a series of vehicle thefts and have made an arrest.Just after 5:30a.m. Wednesday, police were called to an address on Robin Road in Dodge City for report of a stolen vehicle, according to a media release. Approximately an hour later police responded to an address on Elbow Bend for another stolen vehicle. While officers were investigating the stolen vehicles, multiple calls began to come in for burglaries to vehicles in the Fairway Drive, Elbow Bend and Shadow Lane areas. During the investigation of the stolen vehicles, officers found that one had OnStar. OnStar was contacted and the vehicle was tracked through GPS and located in the Arkansas River bed west of town. KHP and Ford County Sheriff’s deputies located the truck and three suspects, all Dodge City residents. Just before 1:30am. Thursday hours, police responded to a report of a shooting in the alley behind the 320 Landing Apartments, 322 E. 1st Avenue, in Hutchinson, according to a media release.

&nbsp;On scene, officers located Michael Pena, 38 of Hutchinson with several gunshot wounds to the abdomen. EMS transported him to an area hospital. He underwent surgery and is now in recovery, according to the release. Police have not reported an arrest but are asking anyone with information on the crime to contact them.

Police ID man found with gunshot wounds in Hutchinson

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a stabbing and have a suspect in custody.

Just after 6p.m. Tuesday, police responded to home in the 700 Block SW Western Ave reference to a stabbing that had occurred, according to Lt. Jerry Monasmith.

Upon arrival, officers located a man suffering from injuries that were consistent with a stabbing. The victim was later transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. 

Police identified a suspect later identified as 39-year-old James Henry&nbsp;in the area and took him into custody without incident.

Henry of Topeka is being held in the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated Battery.

Police arrest Kansas man after stabbing sends victim to hospital

SALINE COUNTY —Solomon man was arrested after an incident in which he allegedly struck his girlfriend's co-worker with a car early this morning.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that a 21-year-old Salina man told officers that a female co-worker had given him a ride home from work. That allegedly upset the woman's boyfriend, identified as Simon Smith, 18, of Solomon, who went to the man's residence in the 500 block of State Street.

The man said he was walking in the alley of the 500 block of State Street when Smith allegedly approached him in a 2015 Toyota Camry. The man attempted to jump out of the way, but allegedly was struck by the Camry, Forrester said. He told police that he went up onto the hood and struck the windshield, damaging it. The man suffered minor scratches and bruises, Forrester said.

The alleged incident occurred shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday.

A short while later, officers made contact with Smith, who was still in the area. Smith was arrested on a requested charge of aggravated battery, Forrester said.

MANHATTAN—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer in the 1000 block of Yuma Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The incident occurred just before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday when a 79-year-old suspect identified as Stanley Edward Hoerman, 79, of Manhattan, threatened a 40-year-old male police officer with a gun.

Police arrested Hoerman on requested charges of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer. Heorman was booked into jail on a bond of $5,000 and is no longer in custody, according to the RCPD report.&nbsp; Police released no additional details.

79-year-old allegedly threatened RCPD officer with a gun

OXFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A fourth student, a 17-year-old boy, died Wednesday from wounds he suffered when a sophomore opened fire at a Michigan high school a day earlier, authorities said.

The other dead included a 16-year-old boy who died in a deputy’s patrol car on the way to a hospital. Eight people were wounded, some critically, including a 14-year-old girl who was placed on a ventilator after surgery.

Investigators were still trying to determine a motive for the shooting Tuesday at Oxford High School, located in a community of about 22,000 people roughly 30 miles (48 kilometers) north of Detroit, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said.

“The person that’s got the most insight and the motive is not talking,” he said at a news conference late Tuesday.

Deputies rushed to the school around lunchtime as more than 100 calls flooded 911 dispatchers with reports of a shooter. They arrested the student in a hallway within minutes of their arrival. He put his hands in the air as deputies approached, Bouchard said.

The boy’s father on Friday bought the 9 mm Sig Sauer used in the shooting, Bouchard said. He didn’t know why the man bought the semiautomatic handgun, which his son had been posting pictures of and practicing shooting, Bouchard said.

Authorities did not immediately release the boy’s name.

The four students who were killed were 16-year-old Tate Myre, 14-year-old Hana St. Juliana, 17-year-old Madisyn Baldwin and Justin Shilling, who died Wednesday.

Bouchard said Myre died in a patrol car as a deputy tried to get him to an emergency room.

A teacher who received a graze wound to the shoulder left the hospital, but seven students ranging in age from 14 to 17 remained hospitalized through the night with gunshot wounds, he said.

Police must seek permission from a juvenile’s parents or guardian to speak with them, he added.Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said in a statement that her office expects to issue charges quickly and that an update would be given Wednesday.Authorities were made aware of posts on social media that said there had been threats of a shooting at the roughly 1,700-student school, but Bouchard said they didn’t know about the rumors until after the attack.He stressed how crucial it is for tips of the kind to be sent to authorities, while also cautioning against spreading social media rumors before a full investigation.McCabe also downplayed the significance of a situation in early November when a deer head was thrown off the school roof, which he said was “absolutely unrelated” to the shooting. The vandalism prompted school administrators to post two letters to parents on the school’s website, saying they were responding to rumors of a threat against the school but had found none.Bouchard said the student in custody had no previous run-ins with his department and he wasn’t aware of any disciplinary history at school.“That’s part of our investigation to determine what happened prior to this event and if some signs were missed how were they missed and why,” he said.The campus was placed on lockdown during the attack, with some children sheltering in locked classrooms. They were later taken to a nearby Meijer grocery store to be picked up by their parents.The district said in a statement that all of its schools would be closed for the rest of the week.Isabel Flores, a 15-year-old ninth-grader, told WJBK-TV that she and other students heard gunshots and saw another student bleeding from the face. They then ran from the area through the rear of the school, she said.Authorities said they were searching the suspect’s cellphone, school video footage and social media posts for any evidence of a possible motive.School administrators had posted two letters to parents on the school’s website in November, saying they were responding to rumors of a threat against the school following a bizarre vandalism incident.According to a Nov. 4 letter written by Principal Steve Wolf, someone threw a deer head into a courtyard from the school’s roof, painted several windows on the roof with red acrylic paint and used the same paint on concrete near the school building during the early morning hours. Without specifically referencing that incident, a second post on Nov. 12 assured “there has been no threat to our building nor our students.”Both the sheriff and undersheriff emphasized that Tuesday’s shooting was unrelated to the deer head or any earlier investigation by their office.“That was a different incident, different student,” McCabe said.A concerned parent, Robin Redding, said her son, Treshan Bryant, is a 12th grader at the school but stayed home Tuesday. Redding said her son had heard threats that there could be a shooting.“This couldn’t be just random,” she said.Bryant said he texted several younger cousins in the morning and they said they didn’t want to go to school, and he got a bad feeling. He asked his mom if he could do his assignments online.Bryant said he had heard vague threats “for a long time now” about plans for a shooting.At a vigil Tuesday night at LakePoint Community Church, Leeann Dersa choked back tears as she hugged friends and neighbors. Dersa has lived nearly all of her 73 years in Oxford. Her grandchildren attended the high school.“Scared us all something terrible. It’s awful,” Dersa said of the shooting.Pastor Jesse Holt said news of the shooting flooded in to him and his wife, including texts from some of the 20 to 25 students who are among the 400-member congregation.“Some were very scared, hiding under their desks and texting us, `We’re safe, we’re OK. We heard gunshots, but we’re OK.’ They were trying to calm us, at least that’s how it felt,” he said.
