ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating the theft of a vehicle from a local car dealer and have made an arrest.

On March 1, a car dealer in Hiawatha reported that a 2020 Ford Escape was taken from their lot, according to, Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Just after 10:30p.m. March 5, an officer spotted a 2020 blue Ford Escape traveling on North 4th Street in Atchison.

&nbsp;Officers stopped the vehicle and took 42-year-old Nicholas Norton into custody. Police took Norton to the county jail on requested charges of possession of stolen property. He has previous convictions for theft and burglary, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

During the investigation, deputies located a firearm, illegal narcotics and drug paraphernalia. They also arrested the driver&nbsp;Sarah R. Chaplin, 38, of Topeka, and transported her to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges that included possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, felon in possession of a firearmk criminal use of a weapon, illegal use of a telecommunication device and&nbsp;&nbsp;other drug violations.

Kansas woman accused of distributing meth

RENO COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are looking for a parole absconder with a long history of crime.

Reno County sheriff's deputies attempted tried to contact 32-year-old Justin Quaid Walker to serve an arrest warrant Saturday, according to a social media report.&nbsp;

 Walker made it to a vehicle and fled from the area, leading officers on a chase throughout the city. A woman was let out of the vehicle in the area of 10th and Severance and the pursuit was called off a short time later due to the amount of traffic in the city at the time. Walker wrecked the vehicle near 21st and Main and fled on foot.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Sheriff's Office also wants to identify the woman who was in the vehicle so they can talk to her.&nbsp;

Deputies looking Kan. parole violator with long history of crime 

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal car accident early Sunday have identified the victim as 5-year-old Aleah A. Reyes of Wichita&nbsp; according Sedgwick County Sheriff's Lt. Benjamin Blick.

Just after 3a.m. Sunday, deputies were dispatched to an injury accident near 47th Street South and 127th Street East, according to Blick.

 When deputies arrived they located a 2014 Ford Escape driven by 26-year-old Nory Lam of Wichita that had been westbound on 47th Street South when it left the road and overturned. 

Lam had minor injuries. The passenger, Lam's 5-year-old daughter Aleah A. Reyes of Wichita was unresponsive.&nbsp; EMS provided life saving measures to Reyes but she was pronounced deceased at 3:39a.m., according to Blick.

During the accident investigation deputies discovered evidence that indicated alcohol may have contributed to the accident, according to Blick. Additional investigative efforts determined probable cause existed to arrest and<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20069853"> book Nory Lam for</a> Involuntary Manslaughter, Driving under the Influence and Transporting an Open Container of an Alcoholic Beverage.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kan. woman jailed after crash that killed 5-year-old daughter

CAMDENTON, Mo. (AP) — A southwest Missouri real estate agent was charged Friday with conspiring to have her former mother-in-law killed.

Leigh Ann Bauman, 43, was arrested Thursday afternoon and was being held in the Camden County Jail on no bond.

Bauman agreed to pay people in St. Louis $1,500 to make her ex-mother-in-law’s death look like an accident, the Camden County prosecutor’s office said in a news release. Bauman was upset that the woman was interfering with her relationship with her children, the prosecutor said.

A witness recorded a conversation with Baumann about the plot.

“In the recording, Bauman was asked multiple times if she was sure she wanted to hire these people, and she confirmed,” said prosecutor said. “Bauman stated specially that she knew as a Christian it was wrong, but she could ask for forgiveness.” Bauman reportedly also sent a text message to her daughter stating “your grandmother will die.” Online court records do not name an attorney for Bauman.

Popular realtor charged in plan to kill ex-mother-in-law

KANSAS CITY (AP) — More than 50 people gathered outside the home of a Kansas City-area prosecutor to protest her decision not to charge a police officer in the fatal shooting of a Black man last year.

The protesters called for justice for 47-year-old Donnie Sanders as they marched down Ward Parkway to the home of Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker on Saturday. Peters Baker announced Monday that investigators didn't find enough evidence to support charges against the Kansas City police officer involved in the shooting,

Sanders’ sisters, who participated in the protest, said they want Peters Baker to release a complete copy of the investigation into the shooting for the officer held accountable.

“We’re going to keep going ... until we get some form of justice,” Reshonda Sanders said. She&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article249746238.html">told&nbsp;</a>the Kansas City Star that her brother wasn’t doing anything wrong when he was shot.

Another sister, Youlanda Sanders, said her brother didn’t deserve to die for a traffic stop.

“Man I miss my little brother,” she said. “I’m tired. This ain’t right.”

Donnie Sanders was shot last March after the officer, whose name hasn't been released, began following him for alleged traffic violations. The officer confronted Sanders when he got out of his vehicle in an alley. The officer told investigators that he believed Sanders was pointing a gun at him. Investigators determined Sanders did not have a gun, but two witnesses corroborated the officer's account.

Sanders’ death was one of several fatal shootings of Black people cited during&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/virus-outbreak-kansas-city-health-kansas-racial-injustice-02d510348e588646ec876a492b281809">protests&nbsp;</a>against police in 2020.

During the march Saturday, one protester was arrested after a car hit another protester at a low speed. The protester who was hit by the car did not appear to be injured. Police spokesman Sgt. Jake Becchina said the protester who was arrested apparently damaged the car.

The prosecutor said on Twitter that she supported the peaceful protest that took place outside her home.

“I fully support the right to peacefully protest. That includes the protest that occurred at my home today,” she said. “I do question those few people who decided to carry and display rifles at a peaceful protest, to block traffic, and to vandalize a car, which also occurred today.”

Protesters object to lack of charges in KC police shooting

PAWNEE COUNTY – Bryce Allen Boman, 22 of Kinsley, Kansas, appeared via Zoom with retained counsel Friday in Pawnee County Court, according to County Attorney Doug McNett.

Bowman plead no contest to Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Lewd and Lascivious Behavior with a minor under the age of 16.

District Judge Bruce Gatterman accepted the plea and found Boman Guilty of the charges. As part of the plea agreement, the defendant agreed to waive his right to appeal the convictions and will be subject to Sex Offender Registration.

The State alleged that Boman pointed a handgun at four juveniles as they were leaving the skate park in the Larned Schnack Park the evening of October 12, 2019. In a separate incident, it was alleged that&nbsp; Boman exposed himself in the same park to a girl under the age of 16 on October 20, 2019.

Arrested at the time, Boman later posted bond and was released. As a condition of his bond, he was ordered to surrender all of his firearms to law enforcement and have no contact directly or indirectly with the victims. Sentencing will take place once a presentence investigation report is completed, according to McNett.

PAWNEE COUNTY – Following a two hour preliminary hearing this week, Bryce Allen Boman, 21 of Kinsley, Kansas, was bound over for trial&nbsp; in the Pawnee County District Court on four (4) counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, according to County Attorney Doug McNett.

Pawnee County Magistrate Judge Julie Cowell heard testimony from four juveniles that Boman allegedly pointed a handgun at them as they were leaving the skate park in the Larned Schnack Park the evening of October 12, 2019. Arraignment has been scheduled for February 28, 2020.

If convicted, under the Kansas Sentencing Guidelines the defendant faces a prison sentence between 11 months and 34 months in the custody of the Department of Corrections depending on his criminal history. Under Kansas law when a firearm is used to commit any person felony, the offender’s sentence shall be presumed imprisonment.

Boman remains free on bond. As a condition of his bond, he was ordered to surrender all of his firearms to law enforcement.

Kan. man must register as sex offender as part of plea deal

RILEY COUNTY —Two Manhattan brothers have been arrested in separate rape and aggravated criminal sodomy cases reported to have occurred in Manhattan from 2017 to 2021, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department.

On February 21, 2021, officers filed a report for past sex offenses in Manhattan, listing a now 10-year-old female as the victim and a now 27-year-old male as the suspect.&nbsp;Severino&nbsp;Jimenez&nbsp;Calleja, 27, of Manhattan was arrested in connection on March 5, 2021, on two counts of aggravated criminal sodomy of a child under 14 years of age and four counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

On February 25, 2021, officers filed a report for past aggravated offenses in Manhattan, listing a now 10-year-old female as the victim and a 31-year-old male as the suspect. Antonio Jimenez Calleja, 31, of Manhattan was arrested in connection on March 5, 2021, on two counts of rape of a child under 14 years of age, aggravated criminal sodomy of a child under 14 years of age, and aggravated incident liberties of a child under 14 years of age.

Both men are confined in the Riley County Jail on total bonds of $400,000.00 each.

RCPD: 2 brothers arrested in separate child rape cases

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a violent domestic incident have charged a suspect with <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=435871">attempted 2nd degree murder.</a> The injured victims, the suspect's girlfriend and her dog are expected to make a full recovery, according to officer Charley Davidson.

Just after 2 a.m. Tuesday, police responded to a home in the 1500 block of North New York in Wichita, according to Davidson.&nbsp; Upon arrival, they contacted a 41-year-old woman who had a severe laceration to her hand and back. She was taken to an area hospital for treatment of severe injuries.

The investigation revealed the victim and her boyfriend 41-year-old James E. Brown, were at the home and got into a verbal disturbance. 

Brown grabbed a five to six-foot sword during the disturbance, struck her multiple times, and stabbed her dog multiple times.&nbsp;

With the assistance of the community, police located Brown on Wednesday and arrested him without incident, according to Davidson. In addition to the attempted murder charge, Brown is being held on a <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=435871">$100,000 bond on</a> requested charges of&nbsp;cruelty to animals, and aggravated domestic battery, according to Davidson.

&nbsp;Brown has a previous felony conviction, according to Davidson.

Kan. woman, dog injured in sword attack expected to make full recovery

SHAWNEE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspect on multiple charges after a late night traffic stop.

Just before 10p.m. Wednesday, a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a silver Chevrolet Malibu at SW 3rd Street and SW Topeka Boulevard in Topeka, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

 During the investigation, deputies found illegal narcotics and drug paraphernalia. They also found a laptop reported stolen through the Lawrence Police Department and checks reported stolen, according to Topeka Police.

Deputies arrested Austin Hicks, 27, and Allison T. Behler, 25, both of Topeka. Hicks is being held on requested charges of possession of heroin, driving with a revoked license and expired vehicle registration. Behler remains jailed for a felony narcotics warrant through Shawnee County and an out of county warrant and on requested charges including possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Kan. deputies arrest 2 after drugs found during traffic stop

KANSAS CITY (AP) — A Kansas City man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the killing more than five years ago of a woman whose body was found stuffed in a trash bag.

Kevin Hurley, 62, was sentenced Monday for the 2015 beating death of 42-year-old Brandy Helbock-Castaneda. A judge found Hurley guilty in December of second-degree murder in the case.

Helbock-Castaneda’s sister reported her missing on Dec. 5, 2015. Her body was found in the trash bag on Jan. 8, 2016. Hurley was arrested in March 2018 after DNA taken from the victim's ankle matched his, according to court documents.

After Hurley denied knowing Castaneda, further testing showed DNA from a rope around the victim’s hips matched Hurley’s or someone in his paternal lineage. Hurley had been paroled in 2013 after serving nearly 30 years for first-degree robbery and murder convictions in Jackson County.

Man sentenced for death of woman whose body was stuffed in trash bag

SEDGWICK COUNTY- A Kansas man and woman arrested after three police officers were injured by a modified shotgun blast when they checked out a vacant home in Wichita made their first court appearance Wednesday.&nbsp;

James Hathorn, 46, is charged with burglary, theft, criminal possession of a weapon, aggravated weapons violation by a felon and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Tiffany Vulgamore is charged with burglary and theft.&nbsp;

Hathorn remains jailed on a bond of $100,000. Vulgamore is being held on a bond of $50,000, according to online jail records.

Just after 4p.m. February 27, police were dispatched to check the residence&nbsp; in the 1400 Block S. St. Francis in Wichita after a the homeowner had called 911 to report that they had discovered damage to the vacant home and they believed someone might be inside.

Upon arrival, officers obtained keys from the homeowner and attempted to check the residence to ensure no one was inside. After entering the front door of the residence, officers reported hearing an explosion and three officers sustained injuries to their legs, according to Police Chief Gordon Ramsay during a Monday news conference.

Initially, the officers thought it was an explosion or even a bomb, according to Ramsay.

The injured officers were removed from the residence and transported to an area hospital for treatment. One of the officers was treated and released Saturday. One of the other officers had minor injuries and the third was listed in serious but stable condition.&nbsp; Both were released from the hospital Monday.

The Wichita Police Department SWAT team and Bomb Squad were activated and secured the house. The investigation revealed that no one was inside the home, but someone had left a modified, loaded shotgun in the residence which discharged as the officers made entry.

Investigators learned the two suspects had been staying at the home but had left before police arrived Saturday. The loaded, sawed off shotgun had been left in a side pouch of a recliner near the entrance of the home, according to Ramsay.&nbsp;Police arrested Hathorn and Vulgamore on Sunday when they tried to enter the same home.

2 charged in case of modified shotgun that injured Kan. officers

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal shooting in the backyard of a home during a small gathering in Wichita have arrested&nbsp;41-year-old Michael Swinney, according to officer Charley Davidson.

Just before 1a.m. Wednesday,&nbsp; police responded to a home in the 2400 Block of North Sunny Lane in Wichita, according to&nbsp;Captain Jason Stephens.&nbsp; In the backyard of that location, police located 22-year-old Jacob Kalese with several gunshot wounds.&nbsp; EMS transported him to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation revealed Kalese, his girlfriend and Swinney were at a small gathering at the home with several other individuals.&nbsp; A disturbance occurred between Swinney and Kalese, multiple shots were fired and&nbsp; Swinney fled the scene.

Through the investigation, investigators learned of Swinney’s involvement and he was arrested Wednesday afternoon at a home in the 100 block of South Young in Wichita without incident, according to Davidson.

Swinney is being held on requested charges of first-degree murder, an arrest and detain order through the Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC), and outstanding warrants, according to Davidson.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Police: Kan. felon accused of murder during backyard gathering 

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A man who injured a police officer after intentionally ramming through a security gate at a Koch family home in Wichita has been sentenced to three years of probation.

Aron James White, 42, was sentenced last week for injuring the officer. The Koch family&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/c2846888934241e090451162a927ae2c">did not pursue charges</a>&nbsp;after the January 2019 incident, which caused $20,000 damage to the gate and $10,000 in ruined landscape.

Court records say White rammed the gate after a security guard refuse to let him enter. He then hit a patrol car used by officer Atlee Vogt, who suffered bruising and minor burns when the airbag deployed.

White was arrested when he hit a tree on the property.

Investigators said at the time that White may have been under the influence of drugs. He had no known connection to the Koch property and didn’t live in the area.

Records show Chase Koch, the son of billionaire businessman Charles Koch, lived at the property at the time of the incident.

White pleaded guilty in January to one count of reckless aggravated battery. He would face a 32-month sentence in jail if he violates probation. He also must pay Vogt’s outstanding medical expenses.

Kansas City (AP) — A federal grand jury indicted a southwest Missouri man on charges that he threatened to kill two Democratic congressmen from Missouri and Tennessee.

Prosecutors said Kenneth Hubert, 63, of Marionville, Missouri, threatened to assault and kill Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II of Missouri and Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hubert was indicted on Feb. 23. The three-count indictment was made public Wednesday after he was arrested and made his first court appearance, according to the U.S. attorney’s office in western Missouri.

Hubert allegedly threatened to assault and kill Cleaver on Jan. 7. He allegedly threatened Cohen on May 6, 2019. The indictment said both men were threatened to impede them from performing their officials duties, or in retaliation for the performance of their duties.

Cohen was threatened in a phone call to his Washington, D.C., office, according to the indictment, which does not say how the threat to Cleaver was transmitted.

Cleaver said that he doesn’t know Hubert and he was unaware of the threat until Cohen told him about it last week.

“I didn’t even know that this guy had made a threat. It was completely news to me when Steve Cohen told me,” Cleaver said.

Cleaver was threatened the day after the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/capitol-siege">Capitol riot&nbsp;</a>in Washington, D.C., but Hubert was not involved in that event, said Don Ledford, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office.

Cleaver represents Missouri’s 5th District, which includes Kansas City. He is also the former mayor of Kansas City. Cohen represents Tennessee’s 9th District, which includes most of Memphis.

Hubert remains in custody pending a detention hearing on Monday. The federal public defender’s office was appointed to represent Hubert. A representative from the office did not return a phone call seeking comment.

Prosecutors: Man threatened to kill Kansas City-area congressman

KANSAS CITY– Eight defendants have been indicted by a federal grand jury for their roles in a $4.1 million conspiracy to distribute more than 520 kilograms of methamphetamine, according to the United States Attorney.

Tina Marie Bailey, 36, and Martin Lee Williams, 58, both of Kansas City, Mo.; Mark Williams Hildebrand II, 31, and Harry Richard Watson Jr., also known as “Ricky,” 35, of St. Joseph, Mo.; Derek Sean Freese, 53, Carl Dewey Williams, 47, and Angeliqua Teresa Collins, 35, all of Moberly, Mo.; and &nbsp;Joshua Lee Laws, 44, of Unionville, Mo., were charged in a five-count indictment returned under seal by a federal grand jury in Kansas City, Mo., on Feb. 23, 2021. The indictment has been unsealed and made public following the arrests and initial court appearances of several defendants this week.

Collins, Laws, and Watson were arrested today. Martin Williams was arrested on Monday, March 1. The remaining defendants were already detained in state custody in separate and unrelated cases.

The federal indictment alleges that all eight defendants participated in a conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine from Jan. 1, 2017, to Feb. 22, 2021. The indictment also alleges that all eight defendants participated in a related money-laundering conspiracy.

In addition to the conspiracy counts, Bailey, Freese, Laws, Carl Williams, and Martin Williams are charged together with one count of possessing firearms in furtherance of crimes of violence and drug-trafficking crimes. Freese, Carl Williams, and Martin Williams are also charged together in one count of being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition. Bailey and Laws are also charged together in one count of being a drug user in possession of firearms and ammunition.

The firearms cited in the indictment include a Smith &amp; Wesson 9mm semi-automatic handgun with a magazine containing 16 live rounds with one round in the chamber; a Tisas 9mm semi-automatic handgun, a Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun, a Smith &amp; Wesson .380-caliber semi-automatic handgun, a Taurus 9mm semi-automatic handgun, a Ruger .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun, a High-Point 9mm semi-automatic handgun, a Smith &amp; Wesson .40-caliber, semi-automatic handgun, a Taurus 9mm semi-automatic handgun, a Ruger 9mm semi-automatic handgun, a Smith &amp; Wesson .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun, a Taurus 9mm semi-automatic handgun, a Ruger 9mm semi-automatic handgun, and various other firearms identified by witnesses, including those traded for methamphetamine.

The indictment also contains a forfeiture count, which would require the defendants to forfeit to the government $4,160,000, which allegedly was received in exchange for the unlawful distribution of more than 520 kilograms of methamphetamine, based on an average street price of $8,000 per kilogram. The defendants must also forfeit the firearms that were seized by law enforcement officers during the investigation.

RILEY COUNTY—A suspect in a series of alleged rapes that occurred in Ogden, Kansas from 2004-2012 has been extradited back to Kansas to face charges.

Michael James Tschantz, 46, Naples, Texas is being held on a $600,000 bond in the Riley County Jail on requested charges of 5 counts of rape of a victim under the age of 14, according to the Riley County booking report.

On November 11, 2020, officers filed a report for several past rape and aggravated criminal sodomy offenses in Ogden, listing a now 21-year-old woman as the victim and a now 46-year-old male known to her as the suspect, according to Riley County Police Department spokesperson Aaron Wintermote.

On February 19, police in Texas arrested Tschantz on a Riley County District Court warrant for five counts of rape of a child under 14 years of age.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a violent, domestic attack arrested 41-year-old James E. Brown of Wichita early Wednesday, according to officer Charley Davidson.

Police arrested him on charges stemming from an aggravated battery – domestic violence and animal cruelty investigation and a second aggravated battery – domestic violence strangulation investigation, according to officer Charley Davidson. Brown also has an outstanding warrant.

Just after 2 a.m. Tuesday, police responded to a home in the 1500 block of North New York in Wichita, according to Davidson.

 Upon arrival, they contacted a 41-year-old woman who had a severe laceration to her hand and back.&nbsp; She was taken to an area hospital for treatment of severe injuries and remains hospitalized.

The investigation revealed the victim and her boyfriend identified as Brown, were at the home and got into a verbal disturbance.&nbsp; Brown grabbed a five to six-foot sword during the disturbance, struck her multiple times, and stabbed her dog multiple times.&nbsp; Investigators also learned the victim had been strangled.

BROWN COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities captured a man and teenager Tuesday night after a chase by law enforcement in the western Kansas community of Hays and later in the northeast Kansas community of Hiawatha, according to Sheriff John Merchant.

Just after 7:30p.m. Tuesday, police in Hays notified deputies in Brown County to watch for 21-year-old Trevonn Hall in a reported stolen 2005 Buick LaCrosse.&nbsp;He was reported as possibly armed and also had a runaway girl with him.

Brown was wanted on a felony probation violation, according to the sheriff. Hall, who had previous arrests in Riley, Pottawatomie and Shawnee County, according to online records had been living in Hays.

Brown County undersheriff Brian Guilliams located the suspect vehicle parked in the 500 Block of Pottawatomie in Hiawatha. When the vehicle drove away, Hiawatha Police&nbsp; initiated a traffic stop and the suspect vehicle immediately fled east on Iowa Street and struck a Ford Edge that was turning in to gas and convenience store.&nbsp;

The suspect vehicle then turned north on First Street where Undersheriff Guilliams took over the pursuit which ended in a field west of Walmart,&nbsp;701 Hopi Drive.

Hall and the girl immediately exited the vehicle and ran towards Walmart.&nbsp; A good samaritan assisted Hiawatha police and a Brown County Deputy in apprehending them in the parking lot, according to Merchant.&nbsp;

Hall is being held on requested charges of both Felony and Misdemeanor Probation Violations, Felony Flee to Elude, Felony Possession of Stolen Property, Felony Obstruction, Possession of Meth and Child Endangerment.

The 16 year old girl was arrested on requested charges of Possession of Meth, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Felony Obstruction. Brown County officials transported her to the Douglas County Detention Center, according to Merchant.

There were no injuries as a result of the crash.&nbsp;

Man, teen who eluded police in Hays captured after NE Kan. chase

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Officials at the Sedgwick County Jail started an investigation last week into contraband brought into the jail, according to Sheriff Jeff Easter.

That contraband included K2 or synthetic marijuana, cell phones, phone chargers, lighters and marijuana.

During the investigation, detectives discovered a detention deputy had been involved in neglect of an inmate, according to Easter.&nbsp; Officials determined there was enough probable cause to arrest and book Detention <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20069772">deputy David Cameron</a> on requested charges of mistreatment of a confined prisoner and for trafficking contraband.

Investigators recovered four cell phones, K2, tobacco, marijuana and a lighter, according to Easter.

In one jail pod where the contraband was introduced, investigators conducted interviews and there are more interviews to do before charges will be presented to the district attorney's office.&nbsp;

Cameron, began employment with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office in June of 2019 and has been placed on unpaid suspension, according to Easter.

Sheriff: Kan. jail deputy who brought drugs to inmates remains in jail  

JACKSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on multiple charges after a traffic stop.

Just before 3 a.m. Tuesday, a sheriff’s deputy stopped at 2005 Lexus for a traffic infraction near 150th and Q.4 Road, according to sheriff Tim Morse.

The deputies seized methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia from the vehicle. 

The driver, Jeffrey Scott Dunaway, 48, of Topeka, was arrested on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while suspended, no insurance and for two outstanding Jackson County District Court warrants. 

Dunaway was booked and remains in the Jackson County Jail.

Just before 4p.m. Monday, police booked Luis Fernando Ramos-Tafolla, 28, Wichita, into the Sedgwick County jail on requested charges of Vehicular homicide, DUI, reckless driving, no valid drivers license and aggravated reckless bodily harm, according to online jail records.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2017 Dodge Charger driven by Ramos-Tafolla was southbound on Interstate 135 in the right lane just after 2:30a.m. on Monday.

 The car rear-ended a 1999 Toyota Camry driven by Jessie Lee Johnson, 60, Wichita.

The Dodge left the road to the right, struck the KDOT barrier, a light pole, vaulted over the edge of Interstate 135 and struck the on ramp from 13th Street to I-135 before landing under I-135.

The Toyota spun around, struck the right KDOT barrier and came to rest in the left lane.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to the Sedgwick County Forensics Center. EMS transported&nbsp;Ramos-Tafolla and&nbsp; passengers in the Toyota Brady Lee Davis, 62, and Sherry Elaine Baker, 52, both of Wichita to local hospitals. Baker was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.&nbsp; The agency did not have details on Baker's seat belt usage.

The crash shut down a stretch of Interstate 135 for several hours early Monday.

Driver in fatal Kansas crash taken from hospital to jail

KANSAS CITY (AP) —An attorney for the family of a <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/5-year-old-ariel-medical-expenses">5-year-old girl</a> critically injured in a crash involving former Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid says the girl suffered a devastating brain injury that has left her unable to speak or walk.

Attorney Tom Porto said Tuesday in an interview with ABC's “Good Morning America” that the family of <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/5-year-old-ariel-medical-expenses">5-year-old Ariel Young </a>wants to see “the most serious charges and the most serious sentence that Britt could ever receive.”

The girl has been <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/5-year-old-ariel-medical-expenses">hospitalized since the&nbsp;Feb. 4</a> crash in which Reid’s truck&nbsp;slammed into two cars on the side of the road.

Police have said Reid told investigators he had “two or three drinks” along with prescribed Adderall before the crash.&nbsp;

In Mid-February, a police spokeswoman said an investigation into whether Reid was impaired before the accident could take several days to complete.&nbsp;No charges have been filed in the case.

Britt Reid has been in legal trouble several times.

He was arrested in January 2007 in Pennsylvania a road-rage incident in which he pointed a gun at another driver, and he was sentenced to up to 23 months in jail and five years of probation after pleading guilty to charges of carrying an unlicensed firearm, simple assault, possession of a controlled substance and possession of an instrument of crime.

Seven months later, Reid was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to up to six months in jail.

Reid appeared to get his life on track, beginning his coaching career as an intern for his father with the Eagles in 2009. He spent the next two years as a graduate assistant at Temple, his alma mater, before joining the staff in Kansas City.

After two seasons as a defensive quality control coach, Reid was promoted to assistant defensive line coach. He then spent three seasons as the defensive line coach before shifting to outside linebackers for the past two seasons.

After entering the front door of the residence, officers reported hearing an explosion and three officers sustained injuries to their legs, according to Ramsay during a Monday news conference.Initially, the officers thought it was an explosion or even a bomb, according to Ramsay.The injured officers were removed from the residence and transported to an area hospital for treatment. One of the officers was treated and released Saturday. One of the other officers had minor injuries and the third was listed in serious but stable condition.&nbsp; Both were to be released from the hospital Monday.The Wichita Police Department SWAT team and Bomb Squad were activated and secured the house. The investigation revealed that no one was inside the home, but someone had left a modified, loaded shotgun in the residence which discharged as the officers made entry.<figure>

 </figure>Investigators also learned the two suspects had been staying at the home but had left before police arrived Saturday. The loaded, sawed off shotgun had been left in a side pouch of a recliner near the entrance of the home, according to Ramsay.<figure>

 </figure>The shotgun had been modified and had no trigger guard making it very dangerous.&nbsp; It is believed that because of the lack of a trigger guard, the trigger likely was caught either on the fabric of the chair or an electrical cord that was in the pouch, which caused the trigger to activate and fire the weapon after it was disturbed by officers moving the furniture, according to Ramsay.<figure>

 </figure>At this point, police do not believe this was a trap, ambush or an attack aimed to injure police officers or any others, according to Ramsay.One of the officers may need additional surgery, according to Ramsay. "It could have been much worse had it (the wound) been higher up. At this point it appears all three should fully recover. "There may be some skin grafts necessary and we aren't sure exactly what the long term ramifications will be. Two of the officers should be able to return to work soon and the third we aren't sure," said Ramsay.Authorities are investigating whether additional federal firearms violations are involved in the case, according to Craig Holloway with the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms. The information will be turned over the United State's Attorney.&nbsp;
