KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Police in Kansas City have identified a man found shot to death outside an apartment complex this week.

The shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. Thursday at a complex near 54th and North Summit streets, where police were summoned for a shooting. Arriving officers found 20-year-old Shi’on Kendall-Hodge with gunshot wounds and declared him dead at the scene.

Police have not announced and suspects or arrests in the case and have asked anyone with information about the killing to call homicide detectives or the city's TIPS hotline.

Police ID man found dead outside Kansas City apartment 

PAWNEE COUNTY —Three suspects arrested in connection with a drug investigation appeared in&nbsp;in custody via Zoom before a Pawnee County judge Thursday to face charges.

Just after 10a.m. January 23, the Pawnee County Sheriff's Office and K9 Unit executed a search warrant at a home in Larned as a result of an on-going drug investigation.

Deputies arrested&nbsp;Mark Larson, 53, Tammy Lee Smith, 52, and Trapper Larson, 20, all of Larned&nbsp; and confiscated numerous drugs along with currency and a homemade explosive, according to the Sheriff's Department.

They are all charged with Possession of Methamphetamine with intent to distribute within 1000 feet of school property, Possession of Marijuana with intent to distribute within 1000 feet of school property, felony drug paraphernalia suitable to distribute a control substance, No Kansas Drug Stamp and misdemeanor drug paraphernalia suitable to consume a controlled substance

Mark and Trapper Larson are also charged with Criminal Possession of an Explosive Device.

Preliminary Hearings have been scheduled for February 11. Mark Larson and Tammy Smith are being held in the custody of the Pawnee County Sheriff in lieu of $90,000 bond. Trapper Larson is being held in the custody of the Barton County Sheriff in lieu of $90,000 bond, according to the. Pawnee County Attorney.

Drugs, cash, explosive device found in Kansas home

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — A man who was accused of taking part in the attack on the U.S. Capitol was arrested Thursday in southwest Missouri.

FBI agents took Zachary Martin into custody without incident on federal charges of unlawful activities on Capitol Grounds, disorderly conduct and demonstrating in the Capitol building, FBI spokeswoman Bridget Patton said in a news release.

No court documents have been posted yet on the case, and Patton said she didn't know whether he had an attorney.

The storming of the Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump happened Jan. 6 as Congress was meeting to vote to affirm Joe Biden’s presidential electoral win. Five people died in the mayhem.

FBI arrests man in Missouri for attack on US Capitol

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas sheriff's deputy recruit for allegedly destroying evidence.

On January 23, police arrested Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Recruit Deputy identified as 23-year-old Brand Johnson following a response to an active disturbance in east Wichita, according to Sheriff's Lt. Benjamin Blick.

Johnson was booked on a requested charge of interference with law enforcement. The specific allegation is KSA 21-5904(a)(2): concealing, destroying or materially altering evidence with the intent to prevent or hinder the apprehension or prosecution of any person.

In addition to the criminal case, an investigation is also being conducted by the Professional Standards Unit of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Johnson has been employed by the Sheriff’s Office for approximately four months and has been placed on administrative leave, according to Blick.

Kan. recruit deputy allegedly destroyed evidence

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement authorities canceled an Amber Alert issued early Thursday after two girls reported abducted from a Kansas City gas station were located and safe.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation issued the Amber Alert for 8-year-old London Johnson and 4-year-old Lauren Smith. The Missouri State Highway Patrol also issued an alert in an effort to find the children.

They were reported in a 2012 Ford Fusion with Kansas license plate 232MFP.

Just before 11:30p.m., the girl's babysitter went inside a gas station at 3801 Leavenworth Road, Kansas City, Kan. and left the vehicle running.

A suspect identified as black male, 5-foot-8 and approximately 250 pounds took the vehicle with the girls.

Authorities have not released detail on where the girls were found and have not reported an arrest.

Shawn Nimmo, 47, Wichita was charged with second-degree murder, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

On Jan. 21, police responded to a medical welfare check at a residence in the 300 Block of South Dodge in Wichita, according to Police Captain Jason Stevens.

At the scene, officers found a victim identified as&nbsp; 43-year-old Rebecca Nimmo with stab wounds and unresponsive . She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Stevens.

Also at the scene was her 47-year-old husband Shawn Nimmo who had called police. Investigators determined probable cause existed to arrest him for her murder, according to Stevens.

Nimmo remains jailed on a $150,000 bond and is due back in court February 11, according to the district attorney.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a woman's death and have made an arrest.

On Thursday morning, police responded to a medical welfare check at a residence in the 300 Block of South Dodge in Wichita, according to Police Captain Jason Stevens.

He is being held on a requested charge of 2nd degree murder. Stevens ask that anyone with information on this domestic violence case should contact police.

At the scene, officers found a 24-year-old Hispanic man with three stab wounds to his abdomen. EMS transported him to a Wichita hospital in critical condition.

Investigators learned the victim had been involved in an altercation with two other men at a party. One suspect grabbed a knife and stabbed the victim, according to the release.

As part of their investigation, police executed a search warrants in the 500 Block of North Cain and the 700 Block of East Curtis in Liberal. Police arrested a 20-year-old man and 25-year-old&nbsp; man on requested charges of attempted first-degree murder, according to the release.

Police did not release the name of the suspects or provide an update on the victim.

Police: Victim in critical condition after SW Kan. party fight

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for an alleged incident with a police officer in Manhattan.

Just after noon Tuesday, police filed a report for aggravated assault near the intersection of N. 8th Street and Poyntz Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 43-year-old male suspect later identified as Marcus Dobson of Manhattan, displayed a weapon to an off-duty officer.

Police arrested Dobson and on requested charges of aggravated assault. He is being held on a $20,000 bond.

RCPD: Manhattan man jailed after incident with  officer

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting that injured two in Topeka.

Just after&nbsp;7:00 p.m.Tuesday, police were dispatched to a Sonic Restaurant, 636 NW US 24 Highway in regards to two individuals suffering from non-life threatening gunshot wounds, according to Topeka Police Lt. Edward Stanley.

One victim was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with minor injuries and the other was treated and released at the scene. 

It was discovered that the shooting occurred at a separate location, and then the victims drove to the Sonic restaurant and reported the incident, according to Stanley.

Police find 2 Kan. shooting victims at fast food restaurant

KANSAS CITY— A former captain in the Kansas City Fire Department was sentenced in federal court Monday for illegally selling dozens of firearms over a five-year period, and to selling firearms to convicted felons, according to the United State's Attorney.

James Samuels, 55, of Kansas City, Mo., was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Gary A. Fenner to six years in federal prison without parole. The court also ordered Samuels to pay a fine of $11,282, which is the amount of cash seized by law enforcement officers at the time of his arrest.

On Aug. 31, 2020, Samuels pleaded guilty to seven counts of a federal indictment, including one count of conspiracy to make false statements during the purchase of firearms, one count of engaging in the business of dealing firearms without a license, four counts of selling firearms and ammunition to persons prohibited by law from possessing them, and one count of possessing an unregistered firearm. Samuels has been in federal custody without bond since his arrest on Oct. 4, 2018.

Samuels admitted that he purchased 77 firearms from November 2013 to August 2018. Of those 77 firearms, 57 were Jimenez pistols. Samuels transferred 47 of those 77 firearms to third parties (including 43 Jimenez pistols). During this time, Samuels was not a licensed dealer of firearms.

Samuels also admitted that 10 to 20 of those firearms were sold to persons who were forbidden by law from possessing them. Samuels bought the firearms at a low price and sold them for a $40 to $50 profit.

Samuels conspired with others to make false statements to federally licensed firearms dealers by misrepresenting the identity of the actual buyer of firearms. Samuels purchased firearms then transferred ownership to another person, who later reported the firearms had been stolen.

Samuels was arrested on Oct. 4, 2018, following an undercover operation in which he sold an Armscor of the Philippines .38-caliber revolver to a confidential informant whom he knew to be a felon. Law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at Samuels’s residence the same day and seized 28 firearms (including 22 handguns, five rifles and one shotgun). Among the firearms seized was a Glock .40-caliber pistol with a TAC Isran GLR 440 stock installed, which was not registered to Samuels, and a Colt .45-caliber pistol, which had been reported stolen. In addition to the firearms, officers seized approximately 12,000 rounds of assorted ammunition, as well as firearm parts and accessories.

The Oct. 4, 2018, transaction is one of four instances cited in Samuels’s plea agreement in which the same confidential informant, whom Samuels knew was a felon and thus prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition, purchased a firearm and ammunition from Samuels. In each of those four instances, Samuels accompanied the confidential informant and an undercover federal agent to a licensed firearms dealer, where the undercover agent completed the paperwork for the straw purchase of the firearm on behalf of the confidential informant. In each instance, the straw purchase was at the direction of Samuels.

Samuels bought the firearms at a low price and sold them for a $40 to $50 profit.Samuels conspired with others to make false statements to federally licensed firearms dealers by misrepresenting the identity of the actual buyer of firearms. Samuels purchased firearms then transferred ownership to another person, who later reported the firearms had been stolen.Samuels was arrested on Oct. 4, 2018, following an undercover operation in which he sold an Armscor of the Philippines .38-caliber revolver to a confidential informant whom he knew to be a felon. Law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at Samuels’s residence the same day and seized 28 firearms (including 22 handguns, five rifles and one shotgun). Among the firearms seized was a Glock .40-caliber pistol with a TAC Isran GLR 440 stock installed, which was not registered to Samuels, and a Colt .45-caliber pistol, which had been reported stolen. In addition to the firearms, officers seized approximately 12,000 rounds of assorted ammunition, as well as firearm parts and accessories.The Oct. 4, 2018, transaction is one of four instances cited in Samuels’s plea agreement in which the same confidential informant, whom Samuels knew was a felon and thus prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition, purchased a firearm and ammunition from Samuels. In each of those four instances, Samuels accompanied the confidential informant and an undercover federal agent to a licensed firearms dealer, where the undercover agent completed the paperwork for the straw purchase of the firearm on behalf of the confidential informant. In each instance, the straw purchase was at the direction of Samuels.

Former KC fire captain sentenced for selling guns to felons

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on drug charges after a traffic stop.

Just after 4p.m. Jan. 24,&nbsp;a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a silver Mazda in the 4800 block of SE US 40 Highway, according to Deputy Abigail Christian. 

During the investigation, a K9 unit was deployed and narcotics were located. Deputies arrested the passenger identified as&nbsp; William L. Jamerson Jr., 45, of Topeka, and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. 

The driver, Alisha D. Swiger, 34, of Topeka, was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on a warrant out of Shawnee County, according to Christian.

Sheriff's K9 helps Kan. deputies make drug arrest

RENO COUNTY&nbsp;— Law enforcement authorities are investigating a stabbing and have a suspect in custody.

&nbsp;Timothy Peters, 56, Hutchinson, went to a residence at 20 E. 15th Street where he is accused of breaking down a door and confronting a man and woman, according to a media release.

One of the victims identified as Demetrius Burgess got into a physical altercation with Peters. The fight spilled out into the front yard when Peters pulled a knife and stabbed Burgess in the stomach, according to the police.

EMS transported Burgess to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment. Police arrested Peters on requested charges of&nbsp;aggravated battery and criminal damage to property. He is being held on a bond of $10,000.

Peters had been on community corrections since October 2019 following four or more DUI convictions, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Kansas man back in jail after alleged stabbing

KANSAS CITY (AP) — R&amp;B artist Trey Songz was jailed Sunday night after he scuffled with police officers during his arrest for not following coronavirus protocols and other rules at the AFC championship game in Kansas City, police said Monday.

Songz, 36, whose name is Tremaine Aldon Neverson, was released Monday while an investigation continues, Jackson County Sheriff’s spokesman LeVanden Darks said. No charges have been filed.

Songz’s representative, Sydney Margetson, declined to comment Monday.

Songz is a three-time Grammy-nominated singer. He earned his third No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&amp;B Albums chart with “Back Home” last year. His other two chart-topping albums are “Trigga” and “Tremaine The Album.” He has also appeared in films including “Texas Chainshaw 3D,” “Baggage Claim” and he starred in “Blood Brother” in 2018.

In October, Songz&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CF-zMKTh4bA/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=embed_video_watch_again" target="_blank">posted</a>&nbsp;on Instagram that he had tested positive for COVID-19. He said he was taking the disease very seriously and urged his fans to do the same.

Kansas City police said in a statement that fans at the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills complained about a man who was not following COVID-19-related protocols and other code of conduct rules for fans, which include not being disruptive, intoxicated, or using obscene language.

The statement did not identify the man as Songz and did not say exactly which rules he was breaking.

Police said the man refused to follow orders from private security guards at Arrowhead Stadium and was asked to leave. When he refused, officers from the Kansas City police and Jackson County sheriff’s office were called and he was told he would be arrested if he didn’t comply, police said.

He punched one officer and put him in a headlock, police said.

TMZ released&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tmz.com/2021/01/24/trey-songz-chiefs-game-fight-police-officer-arrest/" target="_blank">a video</a>&nbsp;Monday that showed Songz was not wearing a mask and struggled with several officers before he was led away in handcuffs.

The video does not show how the confrontation began. Some fans can be heard yelling at officers to leave him alone.

The video shows at least one officer without a mask and others with masks not completely covering their mouth and nose.

Kansas City police told The Associated Press that officers working Chiefs games “comply with all mask mandates.”

“He clearly had his mask on prior to being assaulted and placed in a headlock,” KCPD spokeswoman Donna Drake said in an email.

Law enforcement officials said several agencies work NFL games, making it difficult to know how many other fans might have been ejected or arrested Sunday.

Earlier this month, Songz was set to perform at&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/houston-sylvester-turner-coronavirus-pandemic-bow-wow-us-news-83d3da44fe3f904924ce955699e5bd92">a concert in Houston</a>&nbsp;but police shut it down after seeing hundreds of people lining up to enter the venue, which was supposed to be operating at 50% capacity.

In 2017, Songz&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/c6ea528012e94fd38a9d8ed217744580">was charged</a>&nbsp;with felony assault and assaulting a police officer after he became upset when he was told to end a performance in Detroit. Authorities said microphones and speakers were thrown from the stage during the concert.

Songz pleaded guilty in August 2017 to two counts of disturbing the peace and was sentenced to 18 months of probation.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — A man who officers believed was intending to fire a semi-automatic assault rifle around closing time in a popular Lawrence bar district has been sentenced to 16 months in prison.

The judge told 19-year-old Dayson G. Kelley of Topeka during his sentencing Thursday that he or police officers could have lost their lives, and “that is something that none of us can stomach thinking about."

Kelley was arrested after two Lawrence police officers saw him take a rifle out of the trunk of a vehicle in a parking lot. Police believed he had prepared the weapon for use and intended to fire it.

The officers drew their guns and shouted at Kelley to drop the weapon. He did not comply and instead dropped down behind a car, apparently seeking cover, according to an affidavit filed in the case.

Kelley pleaded no contest in December to two counts of attempted aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer,

“He’s very fortunate that he wasn’t killed or badly wounded by these officers given the circumstances of the case, and I’ve informed him of that and I think he knows that,” defense attorney Jerry Wells said.

Kan. teen who intended to fire assault rifle near bar sentenced

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged crimes involving a child and a meeting for sex.

Just after 2:30 p.m., Saturday, members of the Great Bend Police Department met with members of MotorCity Justice in reference to tip that a Great Bend man was soliciting sex from a 15-year old girl. The Great Bend Police Detectives had been working on this investigation with MotorCity Justice for several weeks.

The suspect later identified as 37-year-old Peter Nail communicated through a chat log, planning to meet the 15-year-old girl at a location in Great Bend, according to the release. Members of the Great Bend Police Department staged in the area of 10th and McKinley until Nail arrived to pick up the girl.

When Nail arrived, police conducted a traffic stop and placed him under arrest on requested charges of sexual exploitation of a child, indecent solicitation of a child, and electronic solicitation, according to the release.&nbsp; Police also seized an electronic device as evidence.&nbsp;Nail is being held on a $1,000,000 bond.

Just after 6p.m. Saturday, a patrol officer in the 1100 block of North Ninth Street&nbsp; in Salina observed a southbound 2014 KIA Soul, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.&nbsp; The officer discovered that the vehicle was reported stolen out of Wichita.

The officer made contact with the driver identified as Arthur Strickland, 31, of Salina, after the vehicle pulled into the Pump Mart, 1118 North Ninth Street. 

Police conducted a search of the vehicle. They located and seized 1.35 pounds of methamphetamine, $3,855 in cash, and a Springfield 1911 .45 caliber handgun.

Officer arrested Strickland on requested charges of Possession with intent to distribute a certain stimulant, No drug tax stamp, Felony possession of drug paraphernalia, Criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and No proof of insurance, according to Forrester.

Police find Kan. felon driving stolen car with drugs, handgun

MONTGOMERY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary and have made two arrests.

On January 16, deputies were called to the scene of two separate incidents involving burglary and theft, according to Sheriff Ron Wade.

On January 16, deputies were called to the east side of Independence when a witness from a previous case observed a truck pulling a trailer that the witness knew to be stolen. 

Upon further investigation it was learned the individual who possessed the trailer had just purchased it from a woman identified as Tanna Darnell, 36, of Independence and a man later identified as Terry “TJ” Werner, 39, Cherryvale, according to Wade.

It was also learned the individual that purchased the trailer also purchased other items that have been identified as stolen property from a separate incident.

Deputies responded to the location where the individual told deputies he purchased the property. While at that location a Deputy observed a blue ford F-150 being driven by Darnell and Werner as a passenger. The two entered a house near the location and deputies arrested them in the house. It was later determined that the home owner did not know Darnell or Werner and they did not have permission to be at the home.

Werner and Darnell are being held on requested charges to include Possession of stolen property, and Burglary. Werner also had multiple arrest warrants. Deputies also recommend drug charges after finding what is believed to be narcotic among her personal belongings.&nbsp;

Deputies find burglary suspects at rural Kansas home

JACKSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges after a chase.

On Jan. 21, a&nbsp;Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputy observed a male subject in the Walmart parking lot in Holton who "appeared to be behaving in a suspicious manner," according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

The man left in a 1997 Honda passenger car and headed south&nbsp; on U.S. Highway 75 at a high rate of speed.&nbsp; The deputy observed the vehicle heading east on 162nd Road and allegedly committing traffic infractions.

 A short pursuit ensued into the City of Mayetta where the pursuit was terminated, according to Morse.

The driver and only occupant was identified as James Michael Costello Jr., 40, Valley Falls. Deputies arrested on requested charges of being in possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal carrying a weapon and eluding a law enforcement officer.&nbsp;

 </figure>JACKSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges after a chase.On Jan. 21, a&nbsp;Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputy observed a male subject in the Walmart parking lot in Holton who "appeared to be behaving in a suspicious manner," according to Sheriff Tim Morse.The man left in a 1997 Honda passenger car and headed south&nbsp; on U.S. Highway 75 at a high rate of speed.&nbsp; The deputy observed the vehicle heading east on 162nd Road and allegedly committing traffic infractions. A short pursuit ensued into the City of Mayetta where the pursuit was terminated, according to Morse.The driver and only occupant was identified as James Michael Costello Jr., 40, Valley Falls. Deputies arrested on requested charges of being in possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal carrying a weapon and eluding a law enforcement officer.&nbsp;

 </figure>SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a woman's death and have made an arrest.On Thursday morning, police responded to a medical welfare check at a residence in the 300 Block of South Dodge in Wichita, according to Police Captain Jason Stevens.At the scene, officers found a victim identified as&nbsp; 43-year-old Rebecca Nimmo with stab wounds and unresponsive . She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Stevens.Also at the scene was her 47-year-old husband Shawn Nimmo who had called police. Investigators determined probable cause existed to arrest him for her murder, according to Stevens.He is being held on a requested charge of 2nd degree murder. Stevens ask that anyone with information on this domestic violence case should contact police.

Kansas man arrested for wife's stabbing death

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug charges after an early morning traffic stop.

Just after 1a.m. Friday a sheriff's deputy stopped a white Ford F150 in the 500 BLock of NW 30 Avenue for a traffic infraction, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

During the course the investigation, the deputy became suspicious of possible drug activity and a canine unit from the city of Great Bend was called to the location. 

The dog indicated the presence of controlled substances in the vehicle. Sheriff’s deputies conducted a search of the vehicle and located suspected methamphetamine inside a hidden container. 

The driver, and sole occupant of the vehicle was identified as Eliseo Velasco Jr. age 32 of Great Bend.

Deputies arrested Velasco and transported him to the Barton County Jail without incident. He was booked on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while revoked. He’s being held on a $10,000 bond, according to Bellendir.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Images of National Guard soldiers camped in a cold parking garage after being sent to protect Washington sparked new calls Friday for investigations of the U.S. Capitol Police, now facing allegations that the agency evicted troops sent to help after its failure to stop rioting mobs two weeks ago. 

&nbsp;National guard troops from Kansas and Missouri are among those in Washington.&nbsp;

Members of both parties were irate about reports that Guardsmen were forced to take rest breaks outside the Capitol building. About 25,000 Guard members from across the country deployed to help secure President Joe Biden’s inauguration,which went off with only a handful of minor arrests.

Biden spoke Friday morning to Gen. Daniel R. Hokanson, chief of the National Guard, said White House press secretary Jen Psaki. She said the president thanked Hokanson and the Guard for their help the last few weeks and offered his assistance if Hokanson needed anything. She did not say if they discussed what happened at the Capitol on Thursday.

First lady Jill Biden visited Guard troops outside the Capitol on Friday, bringing them cookies and thanking them for protecting her family. She noted that the Bidens’ late son, Beau, served in the Delaware Army National Guard.

A jittery Washington requested the aid following the riot where police were badly outnumbered, locking down the nation’s capital with soldiers, police and barricades and lawmakers and Biden took pains to thank security forces for their effort. All 25,000 Guard members were vetted by the FBI over concerns of an insider attack, and a dozen were removed from their posts including two who made extremist statements about the inauguration.

The National Guard said it originally moved troops out of the Capitol Rotunda and other spaces to garages at the behest of the Capitol Police. The Guardsmen were allowed back inside late Thursday after reports were widely shared of the conditions in the garages, with few bathrooms and little covering from the cold.

Capitol Police Interim Chief Yogananda Pittman issued a statement Friday saying her agency “did not instruct the National Guard to vacate the Capitol Building facilities.”

But two Capitol Police officers who spoke on condition of anonymity contradicted her statement, saying they were told department higher-ups had ordered the Guardsmen out. It was unclear why. The two officers spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized by the department to speak.

Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., said that “multiple members of military leadership” had told him a uniformed Capitol Police officer told them to leave the Capitol Visitor Center.

“The troops didn’t move on their own,” said Inhofe, the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee. He added: “This isn’t a blame game, but I want to know what happened so we can make sure it can’t happen again.”

Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, who leads a subcommittee that oversees the Capitol Police budget, said Pittman and other commanders would eventually need to testify about their decision-making.

“If the Capitol Police in any way, shape, or form pushed the Guard out into a cold garage, then there’s going to be hell to pay,” Ryan said . “We’re already trying to re-establish trust with the Capitol Police and we’ve got to figure out exactly what happened.”

The National Guard Bureau said Thursday that of the nearly 26,000 Guard troops deployed to D.C. for the inaugural, just 10,600 remain on duty. The bureau said the Guard is helping states with coordination and the logistics so that troops can get home.

Thousands of Guard troops from all across the country poured into D.C. by the planeload and busload late last week, in response to escalating security threats and fears of more rioting. Military aircraft crowded the runways at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, carrying Guard members into the region in the wake of the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

Guard forces were scattered around the city, helping to secure the Capitol, monuments, Metro entrances and the perimeter of central D.C., which was largely locked down for several days leading up to Wednesday’s inaugural ceremony.

Some local law enforcement agencies have asked for continued assistance from the Guard, so roughly 7,000 troops are expected to stay in the region through the end of the month.

The insurrection highlighted multiple failures by the Capitol Police to prepare for what became a violent mob overrunning parts of the building. Officers who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity said there was little planning before the riot or guidance from department leaders once the riot began.

The riot left five people dead, including Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, who was hit in the head by a fire extinguisher. Another officer died in an apparent suicide after the attack.

Guard in DC forced to sleep in garages, sparking outcry

There was a 16% reduction in both property and violent crimes in Junction City in 2020. Police Chief John Lamb cited the positive direction for the city. "The main driver four our violent crime is aggravated battery. And we saw a 20% decrease in that throughout the year. That's why a lot of the violent crime has dropped. " Lamb noted that there was a slight increase in rape cases and a couple more murder cases than the previous year.

Lamb stated, "On property crime the biggest driver is theft, burglaries and we saw a 49% drop in that so we're really excited, the direction we're going."

The police chief noted that there was a spike in domestic violence at the beginning of the pandemic but that leveled out near the end of the year. "So it wasn't significant to the point that it really caused alarm or drove the numbers in the wrong direction so we did see a little bit of an increase like in violence and some alcohol violations. " 

Lamb added there were more DUI arrests and cases this year although it's not clear if that is related to COVID-19.

Police Chief discusses the 2020 crime statistics

IRONTON, Mo. (AP) — One of three inmates who escaped from a Missouri jail last weekend has been captured in New Mexico, federal authorities said.

Tracy Brown, 57, and his girlfriend were arrested late Wednesday night at a gas station in Carrizozo, New Mexico. The other two escapees, Dwight Abernathie, 36, and Samuel Gillam, 35, remained at-large.

 </figure>The three escaped from the Iron County jail on Jan. 15 or Jan. 16 by moving a block wall, climbing into an attic and escaping through an old office, officials said. Earlier in the week, Iron County Sheriff Jeff Burkett had said authorities believed the men were likely still in the area, but the U.S. Marshals Service said Brown told investigators after his arrest that the three had driven to Colorado together and split up in Denver.<figure>
