For the last twenty years the Kansas Music Hall of Fame has recognized and honored the best in music from Kansas and Greater Kansas City with an annual Induction Ceremony and Concert. For 2025, this will be a two-day weekend event taking place over November 21st and 22nd at Liberty Hall in Lawrence. 

Friday the 21st will be a Red Dog Inn Tribute Concert featuring THE FLIPPERS, THE RED DOGS, THE RISING SONS, and THE YOUNG RAIDERS, all of whom were previous Kansas Music Hall of Fame inductees. On Saturday, the Kansas Music Hall of Fame's 20th Anniversary Induction Ceremony and Concert will feature nine new inductees comprising the Class of 2025 including DELISA DAWN, BOKO MARU, and GARY CHARLESON who will each perform, plus a special Anniversary Encore performance by KELLEY HUNT &amp; THE 5.

Single tickets for each night are $40 and available through Ticketmaster, or for cash only at the Liberty Hall Box Office. The second&nbsp;Annual Hot Dogs and Hot Rods Vintage Car Show and Ice Cream Social will be held on the Geary County Historical Society grounds at 530 N Adams this Saturday, September 20th from 10am-2pm.&nbsp;&nbsp;The event combines the Historical Society's traditional Ice Cream Social with a Vintage Car Show for a full community event.&nbsp;

Musical performances by the Kansas Brigade Band, the JCHS Pep Band, and Brian Clark will take place throughout the event. A STEAM Saturday hands-on education table, sponsored by United Way Junction City/Geary County will be open for anyone interested in participating and concessions including hot dogs, cheeseburgers, popcorn, kettle corn, homemade pies by local 4-H organizations and ice cream will be available for sale.&nbsp;

The Vintage Car Show is open to all pre-1990s cars with a donation to the Historical Society. Car show spaces are first-come-first-serve and priority is given to those who pre-registered. Registration for the Car Show is still open at&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.gearyhistory.org/hot-dogs-and-hot-rods">www.gearyhistory.org/hot-dogs-and-hot-rods</a>. A People's Choice Award will be given at the end of the event.

 Gates will open on the west side of the alley at 9am for cars to arrive and a coffee hour for car owners will be held from 9am-10am.&nbsp;The museum will be open for visitors throughout the event, and a raffle will be held with a chance to win tickets to the upcoming Murder on Mainstreet Mystery Event.&nbsp; All new and renewing Friends of the Historical Society at the event will be automatically entered for a chance to win.&nbsp;

Historical Society hosts annual event Saturday

With warmer weather and recent flooding creating ideal conditions, wildlife officials are reporting more rattlesnake activity than usual across Kansas.

Field staff say the uptick comes at a time when many hunting seasons are underway or about to begin, making it especially important for outdoor enthusiasts to stay alert.

Venomous snakes found in Kansas include several rattlesnake species and copperheads. However, officials emphasize that most snakes encountered in the state are nonvenomous and play a valuable role in maintaining balanced ecosystems. Snakebites in Kansas are rarely fatal, thanks to effective medical treatments available at hospitals.

Tips for Staying Safe Outdoors •&nbsp; Watch your step, especially in tall grass or brush. •&nbsp; Be cautious around logs, rocks, or other debris where snakes may be hiding. •&nbsp; Give snakes space if you encounter one—don’t attempt to catch or kill it.

If Bitten by a Venomous Snake •&nbsp; Stay calm to slow the spread of venom. •&nbsp; Call 911 or get to the nearest hospital as quickly as possible, but avoid driving yourself if symptoms progress. •&nbsp; Do not attempt to catch or kill the snake. Antivenoms used in the U.S. are effective for all pit viper bites, including rattlesnakes and copperheads.

Dept. of Wildlife and Parks warns on increased rattlesnake activity

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club has support for the Geary County Historical Society with a donation to their Hands-on-History programs.&nbsp; Heather Hagedorn, Executive Director/Curator shared information about the work she and her staff of Kim Neptune, Director of Programs and Education and John Sterling, Maintenance and craftsman, do to preserve and protect the history of Geary County.&nbsp; 

Hagadorn stated that there are 100,000 items from prehistoric fossils to current items.&nbsp; There are 10,000 photos from tin type to recent photos and newspapers and directories from their beginning.&nbsp; &nbsp;The most recent gallery display is the Black History Trail Gallery.&nbsp; "I have a passion for creating displays about history.&nbsp; History is also fun, interesting&nbsp;and remembered more when people get to physically touch and see things from the past", Heather said.&nbsp; 

This philosophy is evidenced&nbsp;in programs like 'History Alive!'&nbsp;which included tepis for visitors to go inside of, reenactors who shared information about&nbsp; fur trapping and trading and even a sheriff who "arrested" visitors and took them to jail. All of this and more took place at the historic site at the corner of K-18 and Spring Valley Road.&nbsp; One thousand visitors experienced this event and 350 of them were students.&nbsp; 

There will be another opportunity to experience 'History Alive!' next spring.&nbsp;&nbsp;Other activities put on by the Historical Society include an upcoming Ice Cream Social and Car show on September 20 titled Hot Dogs and Hot Rods.&nbsp; This will take place on the grounds outside of the Museum at the corner of Sixth and Adams Streets.&nbsp; There will be a Murder Mystery (Encore) in October; STEAM Saturdays; a sports history event; Acoustic Junction at the St. Joseph's Church site in eastern Geary County, and a cleanup day at the Highland Cemetery.&nbsp;

A Culture of Abundance Over a Culture of Sacrifice.

Peter Drucker, a renowned author and business advisor, frequently taught that lasting success comes from an abundance mindset—a focus on creating opportunities rather than on guarding against loss. Communities grow stronger and more prosperous when they choose to invest, build, and imagine more, instead of cutting back or holding on to what they have. This core idea of abundance versus sacrifice is a strong tenet throughout his management philosophy and is directly relevant to our current situation. The decisions we make today will shape the future of our community. For too long, a culture of sacrifice—defined by anti-growth rhetoric and protectionist attitudes—has dominated our local discourse. We have consistently heard and acted on the premise that to preserve what we have, we must resist change and reject new opportunities.

Unfortunately, this approach has led to significant losses that have hindered our growth and prosperity. In the past few years alone, we have lost out on several key opportunities, including: The new interchange on Taylor Road, which would have improved connectivity and economic access. A cutting-edge agricultural industry that promised strong ties for future opportunities.

These are just a few of the missed opportunities we know about. The true cost of anti-growth sentiment is likely much higher, as it discourages potential investors and leaders from even considering our community. We are currently getting what we've asked for: a stagnant economy, a declining population, and the loss of our most talented young leaders. They are seeking opportunities elsewhere because they are fed up with lack of progress. We have an opportunity to change our trajectory by embracing a culture of abundance. This principle is about recognizing that we are a community sitting on a wealth of assets—from our rich agricultural heritage and strategic location to our dedicated residents and untapped potential. A culture of abundance is about working together to leverage these assets for meaningful and sustainable growth. It is about actively seeking out new opportunities and creating a welcoming environment for innovation and development. This shift, however, cannot happen if we continue to allow the negative voices to have the loudest and most prominent platform. While it is important to hear all perspectives, we must be proactive in challenging the anti-growth narrative. Leaders must come back strongly with a clear message: that growth is not an option but a critical necessity for our community's survival and future. The perpetual negativity that undermines progress cannot be allowed to dictate our path forward. We must actively champion and promote a positive vision for Junction City.

Embracing this new mindset does not mean we sacrifice our core values. Instead, it means we become more intentional about our future by: Investing in our infrastructure to support new development and improve quality of life. Actively pursuing industrial growth to build our tax base and create new jobs. This is a critical foundation that supports and strengthens the entire local economy, including the opportunities for entrepreneurs. Encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation to diversify our local economy. Building a community that attracts and retains young leaders who will shape our future.

It's time to shift our focus from protecting what we have, to creating what is possible. By uniting around a shared vision of abundance, we can transform our community for generations to come.

Riley Sams-Frost was recognized as the September Junction City High School Student of the Month by the JC Breakfast Optimists and JCHS Junior Optimists. Each month high school's Junior Optimist Club receives nominations from teachers and then votes on a Student of the Month to be recognized who exemplifies the tenets of The Optimist Creed.&nbsp; 

Riley is a senior in the Fine Arts, Human Services Academy at JCHS.&nbsp; Her goals are to be a teacher of early childhood children and has been accepted at Emporia State University to begin her program next school year in that area of study with a minor in Psychology. Her ultimate goal is to earn a Master's Degree in Special Education.&nbsp; Riley is involved in Future Farmers of America (FFA) and is the President of Education Rising, which is a future educators club.&nbsp; Her teacher nominator stated that "Riley has a drive to succeed&nbsp;and has goals she sets to meet them.&nbsp; When obstacles come about, she figures out how to overcome them."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Riley received a Certificate of Recognition, presented by Morgan Nabus, JCHS Junior Optimist Club President, and a $25.00 gift certificate from JC's BBQ and Grill presented by Nita Miller, JC Breakfast Optimist Club President.&nbsp;

Overnight I-70 closure to occur for bridge replacement in Junction City

Junction City Commissioners have granted a $10,000 funding request for 2026 from the Geary County Historical Society.&nbsp;

According to Historical Society Director Heather Hagedorn the County reduced funding for the organization by $15,000 from the amount received this year and $25,000 from the amount requested for next year.

The city commission vote was 4-1 in favor with Commissioner Richard Pinaire voting no. He expressed concern about setting a precedent and the possibility there might be other potential funding sources.

Hagedorn noted that without the money from the City free programming would go away at the museum but the lights would remain on.

&nbsp; Geary County K-State Extension is hosting two informational presentations this week called Plan ahead for your peace of mind with Family and Consumer Sciences agent Renae Riedy and Johnson &amp; Mass-Hinitt. The presentations are at Blu Restaurant and Bar in Junction City (602 N. Washington St). Heritage Park will be the location for the annual Summer Block Party hosted by the Junction City Police Department this Saturday night ( Sept. 20 ). The event is scheduled from 5-8 p.m.

Officer Jay Wigton noted that police love having the community come out and enjoy the good times with the officers. There will be free food, entertainment, inflatables for the kids, a foam fan party, inflatable archery and a child seat lane. There will be a Zumba class, K-9, Taser and SWAT demonstrations and a car show.

Wigton explained to the public that law enforcement "wants to let them know we're parents, we have children of our own." It's a time to see and visit with law enforcement.

Food items will range from sausages to pizzas. The food will be served from 5-8 p.m. or until the supply runs out.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2017 Ram 2500 driven by Sean Anthony&nbsp;Cole, 18, Chapman, was southbound on U.S. 77 at Kansas 57 with a green traffic light.&nbsp; A 2016 Toyota Tacoma driven by Christian Alonso Hernandez, 28, McKinney, texas was westbound on U.S. 57 with a red traffic light. The vehicles collided in the intersection.

EMS transported both drivers to Stormont Vail. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Kansas teen hospitalized after 2-vehicle crash

The Geary County Sheriff's Office has been awarded an Attorney General's Law Enforcement Grant from Kris Kobach, Kansas Attorney General.The Sheriff's Office said it allows them to purchase 55 new holsters and 50 firearms.

The donation from the Masons is to benefit the CASA program, which has a mission to advocate for the best interests of children who have been abused, neglected, and/or human trafficked.

Crystal Quinn, the Executive Director of CASA of the Eighth Judicial District, stated that CASA volunteers are appointed by Judges to speak up for these children in court, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs are met as they navigate the foster care system.

It means the world to have the local Masonic Lodge supporting CASA,” Quinn said. “It shows they care about the well-being of kids in our community. Their support helps us reach more children who need a voice and a champion in their corner.”

CASA of Eighth Judicial District receives $5,000 Masonic Grant

MANHATTAN — Nearly 50 years after it was built, Kansas State University's&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ksvhc.org/">Veterinary Health Center</a>&nbsp;has renovated and enlarged its&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ksvhc.org/services/specialty-services/surgery/">small animal surgery</a>&nbsp;center. The construction efforts occurred with relatively swift surgical precision thanks to a concerted team effort. The results will increase the surgical capabilities at K-State while enhancing its educational mission.

Elizabeth Davis, interim dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony where she acknowledged all those who participated in the renovation."We've had the dream to upgrade our small animal surgery center for a long time, and it took a dream team to make this happen," Davis said. "It began with a design drawn up by Dr. Walter Renberg, the section head for small animal surgery, and turned into actual blueprints by Hadley Stolte, the lead architect and K-State alumnus, at Clark and Enerson. BHS Construction turned it into a reality at lightning speed."

Renberg said the renovation of the surgical suites is a huge step forward for the hospital. The construction took the center from three small operating rooms to five large ones, with centralized induction and recovery rooms that will increase efficiency.During construction, the small animal surgical services had to be temporarily rehoused in Mosier Hall.

Davis said the flexibility of the college's faculty and staff during the period of nine months — from Nov. 25, 2024-Aug. 29, 2025 — allowed the Veterinary Health Center to provide uninterrupted service to clients."We anticipate the care for patients will be better, and we should be able to accommodate more, and different, cases," Renberg said. "Ophthalmologic surgery suite improvements and the nurses' workspace changes will benefit our mission tremendously."&nbsp;&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after noon Friday in Riley County.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 2012 Chevy Traverse driven by Lesa Heiman, 34, of Riley, struck a 2024 Ford F-250 driven by Miguel Mercado-Soto, 35, of Clay Center near the intersection of Main Street and Madison Road in Riley.

EMS transported Heiman to Via Christi for treatment of her injuries. She was also issued a citation for failure to yield right of way at a stop sign.

Riley County woman hospitalized, cited after 2-vehicle crash

The Junction City Police Department has arrested a suspect in connection with the recent series of tire slashing incidents reported in the 200 to 400 blocks of West 5th and West 6th Streets, as well as other nearby areas.

Policce reported that on the morning of Monday, September 15, officers on patrol observed the ouspect, identified as William Kenneth Taylor, a 30-year-old man from Junction City. When officers attempted to make contact, Taylor fled on foot. After a short foot chase, he was taken into custody without injury or incident to himself, the officers, or members of the public.

Taylor was arrested in connection with 10 separate cases on allegations of Damage to Property and Burglary. He is currently being held in the Geary County Corrections Center awaiting his first appearance.

The Junction City Police Department is investigating multiple reports of tire slashing that have occurred over the past several days in the 200 to 400 blocks of West 5th and West 6th Streets, with additional reports received from other nearby areas. These incidents are believed to have taken place between Sunday, September 7, and the morning of Saturday, September 13.

Officers have responded to numerous calls regarding damaged vehicles and continue to gather evidence related to these cases. At this time, the investigation remains ongoing.

 </figure>UPDATE:The Junction City Police Department has arrested a suspect in connection with the recent series of tire slashing incidents reported in the 200 to 400 blocks of West 5th and West 6th Streets, as well as other nearby areas.Policce reported that on the morning of Monday, September 15, officers on patrol observed the ouspect, identified as William Kenneth Taylor, a 30-year-old man from Junction City. When officers attempted to make contact, Taylor fled on foot. After a short foot chase, he was taken into custody without injury or incident to himself, the officers, or members of the public.Taylor was arrested in connection with 10 separate cases on allegations of Damage to Property and Burglary. He is currently being held in the Geary County Corrections Center awaiting his first appearance.This investigation remains ongoing.
