Seals & Crofts 2 will be at the C.L. Hoover Opera House in January

The smell of oven-fresh bread and the conversations around it have defined Cindy Falk’s career for 40 years. As she retires from Kansas Wheat, Falk leaves behind a legacy built on education, outreach and a strong connection between Kansas wheat farmers and the consumers who use their product.

Falk began working with the Kansas Wheat Commission in 1985 when she received a phone call, asking her to become a volunteer Speak for Wheat spokesperson. That role grew into a full-time career focused on promoting wheat foods, home baking and science-based nutrition through classrooms, fairs, test kitchens and national organizations.

A central part of Falk’s work was the Kansas Wheat Commission recipe booklet. Beginning in 1988, she contributed to 37 editions, continuing a tradition that dates back to 1966. The booklets became a widely recognized Kansas Wheat resource, distributed across Kansas and nationally to represent wheat farmers and Kansas agriculture.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this job, or I wouldn’t have continued for 40 years,” Falk said. “That one phone call truly changed my life.”

In addition to her work in Kansas, Falk played a major role in domestic wheat promotion through her leadership with the Wheat Foods Council. As public perceptions of grain foods shifted and fad diets gained attention, her priority continued to be science-based education and accurate nutrition information.

Raised on her grandparents’ wheat farm near Laclede, Kan., Falk brought a personal understanding of agriculture to every outreach effort. Whether working the Kansas State Fair booth or welcoming international visitors into the test kitchen, her goal was to help consumers better understand where wheat comes from.

“Consumers want to hear from the wheat farmer,” Falk said. “People like to ask questions and learn directly from the people involved.”

One of Falk’s most visible accomplishments was helping grow the Kansas Festival of Breads into the National Festival of Breads. What began as a state baking contest evolved into the nation’s only amateur yeast bread competition, drawing hundreds of entries from nearly every state and thousands of attendees during its in-person years in Manhattan. 

The event paired baking with education, giving finalists the opportunity to tour wheat farms, ride in combines during harvest and visit mills and elevators. Those experiences helped turn bakers into ambassadors for wheat and Kansas agriculture. The contest has continued as a fully remote baking competition. Participants submit recipes via email, and recipe testing and judging are conducted at the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center in Manhattan, Kan. 

As Falk enters retirement, she plans to spend more time with family, travel and continue teaching baking and food skills in her community. While her role with Kansas Wheat is ending, her connection to the wheat industry remains strong.

The Geary County Sheriff's Office reported that at 0508 a.m. Friday Deputies responded to a single vehicle injury accident. Samantha Ott of Junction City, KS was traveling north on K-177 HWY in her 2013 Honda Civic when a coyote entered the highway. Samantha was able to evade the coyote, however, she swerved off the road and into a ditch causing disabling damage to her vehicle. 

Ott sustained minor injuries and was transported to Stormont Vail Flint Hills for further treatment

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Chevy Equinox driven by Joshua Mercer, 26, Newton, was southbound on U.S. 77 just north of Lyon Creek Road.&nbsp; The SUV left the roadway to the west, continued southbound in the ditch where it came to rest.

EMS transported Mercer&nbsp;Stormont Vail Health Flint Hills in Junction City. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Kansas man hospitalized in Junction City after SUV accident

The Food Pantry of Geary County moved to a new and larger facility at 700A West 7th Street in 2025. Director Debbie Johns observed, "I think the most amazing thing is seeing how the community supported the Food Pantry." That support came in the form of money and donations from churches and schools.

The new building doubled the size of the Food Pantry. In 2025 there was also a large increase in the number of people served. Some of that increase occurred during the federal government shutdown.

To obtain food clients need a photo ID, proof of Geary County residency and they need to fill out an intake form. If one of those items is missing there is an alternate way to get food. "They're always welcome to come to our food hub and get some items out of there,"said Johns, who added that no one is turned away without food.

In November the Food Pantry served 2,900 people and there were 382 new clients. A total of 652 children were served.

Due to the holidays the facility was closed Dec. 24 and will be Dec. 25 -26, along with Dec. 30-Jan..1. 

Normal hours during the week are Monday and Thursday from 10:30 a.m. until noon, Tuesday from 5:30 -&nbsp; 6:30 p.m. and there is Fresh Food Friday at 9:45 a.m. until the food is gone. School Night at the Pantry is scheduled the first Thursday of the month when families can also get food.

The car struck a pedestrian identified as Thalonda Marie&nbsp;Lashley, 45, Junction City,&nbsp;who was wearing dark clothing and walking north in the driving lane of Tuttle Creek Boulevard.

Lashley was transported to&nbsp;Via Christi-Manhattan where she was pronounced deceased.&nbsp; Harris was not injured and properly restrained, according to the KHP.

RILEY COUNTY —The Kansas HIghway Patrol is investigating a fatal pedestrian accident that occurred just after 9:30p.m. Tuesday in Riley County.

The Patrol reported a vehicle was northbound on Tuttle Creek Boulevard crossing the intersection of Bluemont Street. The vehicle struck a pedestrian who was wearing dark clothing and walking north in the driving lane of Tuttle Creek Boulevard.

County Commission Chairman Keith Ascher noted that two options are under consideration but there has not been any final decision. "What do we need for an adequate jail that is safe for inmates, as well as safe for the employees, the staff?" The sites being considered are in the Ninth, Tenth and Franklin Street area in Junction City near the current jail site and County Office Building parking lot.

Ascher feels that a working group or task force from the public will probably be put together to help with the project. A bond issue could be necessary and the proposal would probably have to go to an election. He estimated that a&nbsp; jail could be finished in the 2029 - 2030&nbsp; time frame.

Other county highlights cited by Ascher for 2025 included the seating of&nbsp; Commissioner Kathy Tremont and Sheriff Nate Boeckman, completion of an updated comprehensive plan, the Sheriff's and Public Works Departments were nearly fully staffed, the annual county budget preparation and the beginning of the I-70 - K-18 interchange project.

The Army announced that due to the 1st Infantry Division’s block leave period, pharmacy operations at Farrelly Health Clinic will temporarily consolidate staff to the Irwin Army Community Hospital Main Pharmacy. 

As a result, the Farrelly Health Clinic pharmacy will be closed from Dec. 22, 2025 through Jan. 2, 2026, and will reopen on Jan. 5, 2026.

• All active-duty servicemembers should fill prescriptions at the IACH Main Pharmacy.

KDWP will conduct a meeting in Council Grove

RILEY COUNTY --Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a weekend incident in Riley County.

Just before 3:30p.m. Sunday,  a 22-year-old suspect drove his vehicle at officers and then struck a gate that hit the two officers, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Ashton Troughton, 22, of Ogden, was arrested at approximately 4:20 p.m. in the 20000 block of Tuttle Creek Blvd and remains jailed on a $50,000 bond on requested charges that include two counts of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and two counts of attempted aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer.&nbsp;

Police said an individual is spoofing the Junction City Police Department’s phone number and claiming to be Chief of Police Nichols. The caller states that Homeland Security has notified them of a warrant for the recipient’s arrest and demands immediate payment to avoid arrest. They may also claim officers are being sent if payment is not made.

This is a scam! Important reminders include the following: 

- JCPD will never call to demand payment or threaten arrest 

- They will never request money, gift cards, or financial information over the phone

-- Phone numbers can be spoofed to appear legitimate.If you receive a call like this, do not engage with the caller, do not provide personal or financial information, hang up, and contact the Junction City Police Department using a verified phone number.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Geary County Public Works Holiday Schedule Notice: 

ADRIAN SELF National Agricultural Biosecurity Center

Kansas State University's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/nabc/">National Agricultural Biosecurity Center</a>&nbsp;is expanding its role on the front lines of animal disease preparedness with a new U.S. Department of Agriculture grant that will immerse extension professionals in realistic outbreak planning across the central U.S.

With $211,248 in new support from USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, the National Agricultural Biosecurity Center, or NABC, will lead a project called Region 7 Tabletops and Functional Workbooks for Extension Professionals. The effort is part of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aphis.usda.gov/funding/nadprp">National Animal Disease Preparedness and Response Program</a>, a Farm Bill initiative that is investing $15.3 million in 68 projects to strengthen animal health infrastructure, biosecurity, emergency planning, training and traceability nationwide.

From October 2025 through September 2027, NABC and its partners will design and deliver tabletop exercises — guided simulations that walk participants through potential foreign or emerging animal disease events — for extension professionals in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. Extension agents, state officials and other stakeholders will work through evolving scenarios, practicing how to coordinate response actions, communicate risk and make time-sensitive decisions that protect livestock and the broader agricultural economy.

Alongside the exercises, the project team will produce functional workbooks that extension professionals can carry back to their counties and communities. These workbooks will include adaptable templates, checklists and planning tools that help local leaders tailor outbreak response strategies to their state and county regulations, species of concern and industry partners.

By combining discussion-based training with practical materials, NABC aims to strengthen how extension systems anticipate, coordinate and respond when an animal disease threat emerges. The project places a particular emphasis on improving communication and decision-making during simulated emergencies, so when a real crisis occurs, responders are already familiar with their roles, information pathways and resource needs.

Building a stronger regional network

Marty Vanier, director of the National Agricultural Biosecurity Center, said the project offers a chance to deepen relationships among extension professionals and response partners across state lines.

"Working together in shared exercises allows participants to identify gaps, compare approaches and build trust before an emergency, creating a more cohesive regional network when rapid, coordinated action is essential."

Over the coming months, NABC staff will collaborate with extension leaders in each Region 7 state to refine exercise objectives, recruit participants and pilot test the workbooks. Those partners are expected to include state departments of agriculture, land-grant university specialists, and emergency management agencies that bring additional expertise in surveillance, incident command and public communication.

The new project adds to a growing portfolio of National Animal Disease Preparedness and Response Program awards at K-State. In recent funding cycles, the National Agricultural Biosecurity Center has earned multiple grants for work ranging from livestock movement analysis to emergency planning and stakeholder outreach, with total awards now exceeding $900,000 to advance national and regional preparedness.

"The Region 7 tabletop project reflects K-State strengths as a next-generation land-grant institution leading collaborative solutions in biosecurity and animal health," said Hans Coetzee, vice president for research. "By partnering with producers, extension networks, and state and federal agencies, the university is helping to develop strategies that prevent and control infectious diseases while supporting the resilience of U.S. livestock industries."

 </figure>ADRIAN SELF National Agricultural Biosecurity CenterKansas State University's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/nabc/">National Agricultural Biosecurity Center</a>&nbsp;is expanding its role on the front lines of animal disease preparedness with a new U.S. Department of Agriculture grant that will immerse extension professionals in realistic outbreak planning across the central U.S.With $211,248 in new support from USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, the National Agricultural Biosecurity Center, or NABC, will lead a project called Region 7 Tabletops and Functional Workbooks for Extension Professionals. The effort is part of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aphis.usda.gov/funding/nadprp">National Animal Disease Preparedness and Response Program</a>, a Farm Bill initiative that is investing $15.3 million in 68 projects to strengthen animal health infrastructure, biosecurity, emergency planning, training and traceability nationwide.<figure>

 </figure>From October 2025 through September 2027, NABC and its partners will design and deliver tabletop exercises — guided simulations that walk participants through potential foreign or emerging animal disease events — for extension professionals in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. Extension agents, state officials and other stakeholders will work through evolving scenarios, practicing how to coordinate response actions, communicate risk and make time-sensitive decisions that protect livestock and the broader agricultural economy.Hands-on tools for extensionAlongside the exercises, the project team will produce functional workbooks that extension professionals can carry back to their counties and communities. These workbooks will include adaptable templates, checklists and planning tools that help local leaders tailor outbreak response strategies to their state and county regulations, species of concern and industry partners.By combining discussion-based training with practical materials, NABC aims to strengthen how extension systems anticipate, coordinate and respond when an animal disease threat emerges. The project places a particular emphasis on improving communication and decision-making during simulated emergencies, so when a real crisis occurs, responders are already familiar with their roles, information pathways and resource needs.Building a stronger regional networkMarty Vanier, director of the National Agricultural Biosecurity Center, said the project offers a chance to deepen relationships among extension professionals and response partners across state lines."Working together in shared exercises allows participants to identify gaps, compare approaches and build trust before an emergency, creating a more cohesive regional network when rapid, coordinated action is essential."Over the coming months, NABC staff will collaborate with extension leaders in each Region 7 state to refine exercise objectives, recruit participants and pilot test the workbooks. Those partners are expected to include state departments of agriculture, land-grant university specialists, and emergency management agencies that bring additional expertise in surveillance, incident command and public communication.Continuing a record of impactThe new project adds to a growing portfolio of National Animal Disease Preparedness and Response Program awards at K-State. In recent funding cycles, the National Agricultural Biosecurity Center has earned multiple grants for work ranging from livestock movement analysis to emergency planning and stakeholder outreach, with total awards now exceeding $900,000 to advance national and regional preparedness."The Region 7 tabletop project reflects K-State strengths as a next-generation land-grant institution leading collaborative solutions in biosecurity and animal health," said Hans Coetzee, vice president for research. "By partnering with producers, extension networks, and state and federal agencies, the university is helping to develop strategies that prevent and control infectious diseases while supporting the resilience of U.S. livestock industries."

The donation, made earlier this week, was part of Rotary’s ongoing commitment to serving the Junction City community through practical, meaningful acts of service. Access to properly fitting shoes can make a significant difference in a child’s comfort, confidence, and ability to focus at school.

Junction City Rotary Club Donates Shoes to Grandview Elementary Students

RILEY COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 6p.m. Friday in Riley&nbsp; County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1997 Chevy Lumina driven by Stephen Lynn&nbsp;Williams, 63, Green, Kansas, was southbound&nbsp;on U.S. 77 at U.S. 24 and struck pedestrian identified as Thomas William&nbsp;McHugh, 77, Riley, in the southbound lane. McHugh landed in the northbound lane. A northbound 2017 Chevy Silverado driven by Jude Lewis Benson, 20, Clay Center, also struck McHugh.

EMS transported McHugh, Williams and a passenger in the car Brenda Lynn Williams, 71, Green, Kansas, to Via Christi in Manhattan. McHugh was pronounced deceased. Benson was not injured. The occupants of both vehicles were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

Riley Co. man dies after struck by a car and a pickup

Geary County Fire was dispatched to the 2400 block of West Lyon Creek Road around 1:10 p.m. on Thursday afternoon for a grass fire.  Due to the extreme winds, 5 trucks were dispatched to respond. Upon arrival, three trucks were used to extinguish the fire, including our new brush unit. The other two trucks were cancelled and were able to return back to their response areas.

 The resident had discarded ashes from his fireplace outside Thursday morning.  The high winds helped expose some embers, starting the grass on fire.  Units were on scene for approximately 40 minutes.&nbsp;&nbsp;
