The filing deadline for the Junction City Commission election passed on Monday. There will be 10 candidates in the race.

Geary County Clerk Courtney Gilbert provided a list of the candidates.

Gilbert confirmed that there will be a primary election on Aug. 5. The list of candidates will be trimmed down to six in the primary. The general election is scheduled on Nov. 4.

Incumbent city commissioner Ronna Larson did not file for reelection. Ricardo Gutierrez, who was recently appointed to fill vacancy on the governing body, did not file for election to a full term.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect for alleged child sex crimes.&nbsp; Just after 1p.m. Friday police arrested 22-year-old Brendon Delarosa of Bronx, New York on a Riley County District Court warrant on requested charges of rape, aggravated criminal sodomy, and aggravated indecent liberties with a child, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

This warrant stems from a report filed in September 2019 for rape, aggravated criminal sodomy, and aggravated indecent liberties with a child. Delarosa is being held on a $200,000 bond.

City Commission filing update

KANSAS CITY – The growing maternal-care desert in Kansas is causing more women in the state to drive long distances for care and 59% do not have local access to inpatient maternity services, according to a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.kumc.edu/school-of-nursing/about/kansas-nursing-workforce-center/research/kansas-nursing-reports.html?=redirect">report</a>&nbsp;released by the University of Kansas School of Nursing.

The report, Access to Maternity Care in Kansas, was produced by KU School of Nursing in collaboration with the Kansas Center for Rural Health, and with funding from the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund. The report describes and defines issues surrounding the availability of maternity care in Kansas.

Over the last 10 years, many rural hospitals across the country have closed or have stopped offering maternity care services altogether. This includes in Kansas, which is second only to Texas in terms of the number of counties considered rural. Rural hospitals are at an increased risk of closure due to declining occupancy rates, high fixed costs and market pressures.

“Kansas legislators, health care systems, foundations, professional organizations and educational institutions are all working hard to address the concerns of access to care and the health care workforce,” said Karen Weis, Ph.D., FAAN, dean of KU School of Nursing-Salina and lead author of the report. “Sound data is needed to support these efforts. The Access to Maternal Care in Kansas report is a first step in gathering that data in one central source.”

Access to quality perinatal care, which includes care during pregnancy and after the birth, is critical to the health of newborn babies and their mothers. Closures of hospitals and cessation of maternity services are correlated with more babies being born early, more infants admitted to neonatal intensive care units and more women dying during pregnancy or in childbirth.

The report outlines, by county and ZIP code when possible, the numbers of women of reproductive age in the area, the facilities offering prenatal care or inpatient maternity care; the availability of referral and high-risk services; and the providers accepting patients and offering prenatal or full perinatal services, nursing, anesthesia, behavioral health, lactation, and doula support services. It also provides the distances to facilities with delivery capabilities.

Key findings in the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.kumc.edu/school-of-nursing/about/kansas-nursing-workforce-center/research/kansas-nursing-reports.html?=redirect">report</a>, which is based on data from 2022-2024, include:&nbsp;

The report also found that the counties with the highest birth rates are the ones losing access to maternity care services. And rural counties had higher birth rates than urban ones: 67 versus 61 live births per 1,000 women of reproductive age.

"To me, the biggest surprise in the report are the two counties in western Kansas with the highest birth rates,” said Weis. Neither of these counties, Wallace and Grant, have a health care system offering maternity care. The distance to inpatient maternity care for those residing in each county is approximately 50 miles and 24 miles, respectively.

The report also provides information clarifying the unrecognized costs of providing maternal health care, which requires the presence of multidisciplinary teams of providers and nurses 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The vast majority of rural hospitals are reimbursed through a Medicare-reimbursement model, which does not cover the high cost of providing maternity care.

"These data paint a stark picture of the current landscape of access to maternal health. The data&nbsp;also emphasize the critical importance of addressing this challenge before it gets worse, as well as recognizing that the location of services is one piece of the puzzle,” said David Jordan, MPA, president and chief executive officer of United Methodist Health Ministry Fund, which is based in Hutchinson, Kansas. 

“We need to figure out solutions to complete the puzzle in order to provide women, children and families across the state with better access to the services they need to thrive.”&nbsp;

The Main Street Approach, focuses on transformation strategies, provides a deliberate path for revitalizing downtown economies. These strategies revolve around four points: economic vitality, promotion, organization and design.”

Some of the most recent events highlighted include: a Community Forum on March 31 where residents were invited to provide input on the future growth of the community; the International Food Tour, with food trucks, arts, and music and the Main Street Market Kickoff for fresh produce, crafts and entertainment was held on May 3. Cups of Culture was May 9, which was an opportunity to celebrate diversity through food, drinks, and fun.

Future events include Boos and Brews on October 17 and 24 when participants can hear chilling talks, delicious ales, and lots of frightful fun. On December 6 there will be a Wine and Wassail Walk and Hometown Christmas to celebrate the festive season.

Washington&nbsp;–Kansas&nbsp;U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, visited&nbsp;Sierra Vista, Arizona Friday to tour the Joint Task Force-Southern Border Command&nbsp;offices, thank members of Kansas’ own 1st&nbsp;Infantry Division from Fort Riley, participate in tours along the southern border, receive briefings, and take an aerial tour of the border near Arizona with several Kansas law enforcement officials, according to a media release from the Senator's office.

Having visited the southern border multiple times under the Biden-Harris Administration, I witnessed chaos, lawlessness, and a system overwhelmed by over 10 million illegal crossings –including individuals on the FBI’s terrorist watchlist,”&nbsp;said Senator Marshall.&nbsp;“But during my most recent trip, the difference was clear. Since President Trump returned to office, we’ve already seen a dramatic shift with illegal border crossings dropping 93% compared to last year. What I’ve witnessed firsthand at the border proves that President Trump’s bold leadership is delivering results, and he is keeping his promises. To continue delivering on the President’s agenda, the Senate must pass the ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill’ – legislation that will provide critical funding our border agencies need to keep America safe.”

I am writing this letter to notify you of the upcoming changes at my office located at 327 E Chestnut here in Junction City, Kansas. For over a span of 4 decades I have enjoyed practicing medicine here in Northeast Kansas and helping you achieve good health. In many instances I have treated 3 generations of the same family and still have several of you who are living beyond 100 years. That is incredible and admirable! However, Father Time has caught up to me and I now find it necessary to slow down and begin passing the torch to the next generation of healers.

It is with excitement and great pleasure that my office will begin to slowly merge with Manhattan Medical Group, headed up by Dr. Priyantha Ranaweera. Dr. Ranaweera is a personal friend and over the decades has provided excellent care to patients throughout Northeast Kansas. In fact, many of our patients are already established with him.

Harvard trained Dr. Ranaweera has already established a team of other physicians and mid level practitioners that will assist me in continuing the care that you, our patients have come to expect.

Beginning May 30th, 2025 my office will slowly transition our patients care over to Manhattan Medical Group, who will have a new office location here in Junction City, date and location to be announced. In the meantime, I will continue to see patients in my office as usual, but this office will close this current location no later than October 5th, 2025. We aim to provide a seamless transition of your care. Your record will remain HIPPA protected.

As most of you know, I am blessed with one of the largest practices in Northeast Kansas, something I am very proud of. Two puzzle options are available: a 24" 200 piece puzzle featuring "The Missing Piece" logo including pictures of the commemoration of the Buffalo Soldier monument, Joseph and Mary Hammond, and a 9th&nbsp;Cavalry football team, or a 24" 500 piece puzzle featuring a Geary County&nbsp; of nearly 20 different local photographs. Both puzzles are $37 dollars and all proceeds will help support the Geary County Historical Society.&nbsp;

The Army announced that the Fort Riley Transition Assistance Program is hosting the “Hiring Our Heroes Career Summit” June 10 at Riley’s Community Center, 446 Seitz Avenue on Post. Morning workshops run from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by a hiring fair, featuring more than 70 local, regional, and national employers, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. The career summit will kick off with a networking reception for job seekers to connect with prospective employers June 9, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Rocking K’s in Manhattan.

The career summit is a specialized event designed to educate, inform, inspire, and connect the military community with military-ready employers. All service members, military spouses, veterans, and veterans’ caregivers are invited.

The morning workshops will cover topics including SkillBridge programs, fellowships, internships, professional development, and using platforms such as LinkedIn. Counselors will also be on hand to review resumes and offer job search tips. Participants should be prepared to interview for job opportunities. The Junction City Brigade open the home portion of their schedule Friday night at Rathert Field against the Wichita Wildcats. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

It will be Hometown Heroes and Military Appreciation Night. There will be one dollar admission for those fans. Hometown Heroes include personnel ranging from emergency management and medical to educators and dispatchers.

Micah Cannon will be the new head coach for the team which has joined the Jayhawk Collegiate League for the first time afer winning a series of championships in the Mid Plains League. Brigade General Manager Cecil Aska likes the move. "Be really good for us, more challenging league." He added, "I think we've assembled a good solid team."&nbsp; Cannon comes to Junction City after spending two years at Emporia State.

Brigade play their home opener Friday night

The Geary County Food Pantry opened its doors to the public for the first time on Thursday. Despite work still being done, guests are able to access the available foods. The new building address is 700A W. 7th St. in Junction City.&nbsp;

Julia Loper, the President of the Board for the Geary County Food Pantry, indicated that they are thrilled to be in their new building, but the project is not finished. “We are open to serve our neighbors at our new location, but there is still work being done to our facility,” Loper said.

The new building, built by Hutton Construction,  is 3,800 square feet. The new building is more than double the size of their previous space. The former location at 138 W. 3rd St. in Junction City (which is now officially closed) was approximately 1,500 square feet.

Debbie Johns, the Director of the Geary County Food Pantry, said the support of the community has been tremendous. “We are so excited to finally be open and be able to serve our neighbors in the community,”  Johns said. “We have been so overwhelmed by our community’s support and are so thankful for their help with moving, donations, and constant support throughout this process.”

Despite now having their doors open to their “neighbors”, work will continue on the building. Miscellaneous projects such as landscaping work, work on the freezers, and trim on the inside of the building remain ongoing.

Hours of operation remain the same for the Geary County Food Pantry.

Mondays and Thursdays – 10:30 a.m. - Noon

A formal grand opening and ribbon-cutting will be held during the late summer or early fall months.

Geary County Food Pantry serves customers for the first time at new location

Geary County Cmmissioners were briefed this week on a new contract with Kellwell for food service at the county detention center. It begins Aug. 12.

According to Sheriff Nate Boeckman the contract is less expensive than the last one. Current staff will be maintained and they will receive a little pay raise.

Blue Jay baseball team hosts End of Season Awards Banquet

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Josie Strauss of the Chapman FFA chapter won first place in the Agricultural Education Proficiency at the 97th Kansas FFA Convention, May 28–30, 2025, on the Kansas State University campus.

Strauss will receive the option to compete at the National FFA Convention against other competitors from across the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The National FFA Convention will be held from Oct. 29 through Nov. 1, 2025, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The Agricultural Education Proficiency is designed to relate to education and extension, including, but not limited to, youth mentoring, agricultural education departmental assistants, PALS mentors and student coordinators, developing and conducting informational materials and presentations for civic organizations and school-aged youth, and students who are involved in SAEs surrounding educating the public about the broad topics of agriculture, agriculture education and FFA.

From building outdoor classrooms and pickle ball courts to sensory rooms and mental and physical well-being programs, these projects are created by students, for students. &nbsp;

&nbsp;The Be the Spark program gives students the tools and funding to bring their big ideas to life. Students went through an extensive application process by submitting letters of intent, surveying their student bodies, partnering with community organizations and developing thoughtful, sustainable plans to improve school health. Whether improving existing spaces or creating new ones, all the selected projects center on one goal: helping teens get active and feel their best.

Junction City Middle School receives a Be the Spark grant

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ford is recalling more than a million vehicles due to a software issue that can cause the rearview camera to malfunction, increasing the chance of an accident, government auto regulators said.

The software error, which Ford reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration earlier this month, may cause the rearview camera image to delay, freeze or not display when the vehicle is in reverse.

The problem will be fixed by a dealer or via an "over-the-air" update at a later date. A preliminary letter notifying owners of the safety risk is expected to be mailed June 16, with a second letter to be sent once the update is available, expected sometime in the third quarter of 2025.

The following Ford vehicles — a total of 1,075,299 — are included in the recall:

2023-2024 F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, F-600

Owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for the recall is 25S49.
