Sunday at approximately 5:44 p.m. the Junction City Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire at the West Ridge Apartments located at 1537 W. Ash St.

According to the Fire Chief, Jason Lankas, upon arrival, crews observed heavy smoke and visible flames coming from the rear of the building. The fire had extended into the attic space and was primarily isolated to the third-floor attic area.

Due to the size and complexity of the incident, mutual aid was requested from Fort Riley Fire Department for a ladder truck. Geary County Fire Department also responded with an additional engine to assist. Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior fire attack while additional crews conducted a primary search of the structure.

The fire was brought under control at approximately 6:19 p.m.

The building at 1537 W. Ash St. consists of six apartment units. All six units were affected by the fire, with four units determined to be a total loss. Thirteen occupants were displaced as a result of the incident. EMS personnel evaluated individuals on scene, and no serious injuries were reported.

The fire has been ruled accidental following an investigation conducted by the Junction City Fire Department.

Initial damage estimates are approximately $100,000 in fire and smoke damage. The estimated total value of the building is approximately $2,750,000.

Apartment Structure Fire with No Serious Injuries

RILEY COUNTY–&nbsp; &nbsp;Law enforcement are investigating a Manhattan man for alleged child sex crimes.

Just after 5:30p.m. March 6. police arrested 48-year-old Joshua G. Taylor, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department.

He was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for five counts of sexual exploitation of a child and possessing media of a child under the age of 18.&nbsp;

Taylor is being held on a $500,000 bond.&nbsp;

Emergency Management ptovides a weather outlook

A Kansas Senate bill that would eventually eliminate property taxes in the state is scheduled for a public hearing on Tuesday.

The Kansas Senate Committee on Federal and State Affairs will hold a hearing on Senate Bill 488 at 9:30 a.m. on March 10. The measure is titled the Kansas Property Tax Freedom Act of 2026.

The proposal would phase out property taxes over several years. Under the bill, local governments would be limited to 50% of their 2025 mill levy in tax year 2026 and 25% of the 2025 levy in 2027. Beginning in 2028, property taxes on real and personal property would be prohibited under the plan.

To replace lost revenue, the legislation would establish a “Kansas fair share purchase surcharge” beginning Jan. 1, 2027. Purchases of $20 or more would carry a flat $1.60 surcharge, while purchases under $20 would be charged 7.6% of the purchase price.

Revenue from the surcharge would be distributed primarily to local governments and schools, with 48% allocated to school districts and 35% to counties, cities and other local taxing entities. Additional funds would support the state general fund and a reserve fund intended to stabilize revenue and potentially provide taxpayer rebates if the balance exceeds $500 million.

The bill also outlines exemptions from the surcharge, including groceries eligible for SNAP, prescription drugs, motor fuel, utilities, child care services and K-12 tuition.

Even if approved by lawmakers, the plan would only take effect if Kansas voters pass a constitutional amendment prohibiting property taxes during a statewide election.

The Junction City Blue Jays Boys Basketball team fell to the Derby Panthers on Saturday night at Derby High School. The Blue Jays end their season in the 6A Sub-State Championship and finish with a record of 13-11 overall.

The two teams each traded early buckets to start a back and forth affair, with Junction City leading 4-2 in the opening minutes, but Derby would jolt ahead thanks to a trio of first quarter three pointers. Trailing 16-13 after the first quarter, and by as many as nine points early in the second period, the Blue Jays would answer back.&nbsp;

Jet Thompson knocked down three of his own shots from the outside in the second quarter to pull Junction City right back in the game. Thompson and Brody Boeckman would each lead Junction City’s offense in the first half with 11 points each, keeping the Blue Jays within three points, at 36-33 at halftime.&nbsp;

In the second half, Junction City’s Lovell Autry shook off his slow start by tallying the first four points of the third quarter and put the Blue Jays in the lead for the first time since the opening minutes. From there, the two teams would jostle for positioning once again, trading baskets but remaining within a possession of one another for the remainder of the quarter. Derby would keep its three point advantage at the end of the third, leading 49-46.&nbsp;

Autry, who scored just three first half points, would heat up when Junction City needed him most. The Senior scored a team-high 22 points in the contest. Scoring 19 of the Blue Jays 28 total after halftime.&nbsp;

Derby would use a quick run to extend its lead back out to nine points early in the fourth quarter, aided by the hot shooting of guard Greg Stiger, who would score 23 points in the game, but 18 of them in the second half, including nine points during the Panthers run that would eventually secure the win.&nbsp;

Additionally for Derby, Avant Riley would lead them in scoring overall with 25 points, while Cale Clingan added 14 points as well.&nbsp;

The Panthers would pull away for a double digit win despite the staunch effort of Junction City behind Autry, as well as Thompson’s 16 points.&nbsp;

With the win, Derby now advances to the 6A State Tournament.

The USD 475 Board of Education adopted a new board policy on INGG Facility Dogs in schools on Monday. The purpose of this policy is to establish board-authorized requirements for the use of facility dogs in district schools and programs, ensuring student safety, staff accountability, and compliance with applicable state and federal law.

The USD 475 Board of Education approved the recommendation from the staff to use approximately $224,851 on site and playground improvements at Lincoln Elementary.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Junction City High School English teacher, Patrick Hancock, was honored for being named the inaugural K-State College of Education Literacy Legacy Award recipient. The Literacy Legacy Award honors exceptional literacy educators who make a meaningful impact on student literacy learning.

Kamyra Faust of Junction City, KS was traveling onto I-70 west from the K-18 Bypass when Kamyra lost control of the 2013 Chrysler 200 and slid into a guardrail before rolling off the road. There will be a marketing campaign proposal on the Geary County Commission meeting agenda Monday. Commissioner Trish Giordano said that she wants to pitch an idea brought to their attention by Alan Bontrager and Rick Dykstra. "There's so many good things happening in the whole entire county that I think that we need to do a full-on marketing campaign to brag about our community, to show people that we are an excellent community to not only live but visit and work.'

Giorano wants the city, county, school district and businesses to see what a good community it is.

Once approval is gained she wants to get a baseline budget so a budget can be prepared, a committee formed, community members involved and perhaps a logo idea formed to get things going.

JC 1st has pledged $10,000 abd Giordano noted that she plans to ask the county commission to pledge $20,000 right now. She thought the City would consider contributing and local businesses would be surveyed for possible funding help.

The topic is on the county commission agenda at 12:30 p.m. Monday.

The Dorothy Bramlage Public Library has announced the relocation and refresh of its beloved StoryWalk® to Homer’s Pond, in partnership with the City of Junction City and Konza Prairie Community Health Center WIC. The first new StoryWalk® title will be at the Homer’s Pond location on or about April 1.

Previously located in the downtown area, the StoryWalk® has been reimagined and moved to Homer’s Pond to create a more accessible, family-friendly outdoor literacy experience. Surrounded by nature and a walking path, the new location invites children and caregivers to read, explore, and connect while enjoying one of Junction City’s most treasured outdoor spaces.

StoryWalk® transforms the pages of a children’s book into large, weather-resistant displays placed along a walking route. As families stroll from panel to panel, they read the story together while engaging in movement and conversation. The updated installation at Homer’s Pond provides improved visibility, safer pedestrian access, and an enhanced experience for families with strollers and young children.

Kyler Langvardt, Geary County, K-State, Research and Natural Resources Agent, was the guest speaker at the JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s meeting on March 4 at the Hampton Inn. Kyler worked on his family’s ranch at the Cattle Sale Barn and graduated from Chapman High School. He graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Ag Communication and Education.

Kyler told club members that “there are three Extension Agents in the office located at 119 E. Ninth Street. That is also the site of the former Geary County Health Department.” In addition to his area of responsibilities in Ag and Natural Resources, there is an Agent who works with 4-H and one that deals with Family and Consumer Science, Family Planning and does Medicare Counseling.

The Ag and Natural Resources Agent helps with counseling and advising about pastureland management, lease law, community development and volunteers to help with the planning and execution of events. Extensive material resources are available at the Extension Office and Kyler is willing to individually work with people to answer questions and solve problems related to his areas of expertise.

An example given to the Optimists was a two-page Item Checklist For Growers in April. Information on the Checklist gave planting dates and things to do during April for growing fruits, vegetables and flowers; lawn, tree and shrub care; and how to take care of house plants.

Extension Agent serves as the Optimist’s Guest Speaker

TOPEKA — Kansans receiving food assistance can’t buy soda or candy with those dollars beginning in 2027, Gov. Laura Kelly said Wednesday.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture&nbsp;<a href="https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.fns.usda.gov%2Fsnap%2Fwaivers%2Ffoodrestriction/1/0101019cbab54047-08a03f0a-e32d-46c2-9b36-524fa331e2bb-000000/0T9ZyQ1ireBQHHUS257jy1tmZiFh3-HIbXcpR_BLOjY=447" target="_blank">approved a waiver</a>&nbsp;for the Kansas Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

The state joins 21 other states in restricting candy and soda purchases with SNAP dollars, Kelly said in a news release. The Legislature passed a law last year requiring the administration to seek the waiver. Kelly vetoed the law but was overridden by GOP supermajorities in the House and Senate.

While the governor said she supports policies that incentivize healthy eating, Kelly encouraged the USDA to develop a strategy to implement such waivers that reduce “confusion and uncertainty” for retailers and recipients.

Kelly referred to confusion across the country about which products are considered candy and soda. Products people think of as candy may not meet the definition under the law, which has caused problems for retailers and recipients in other states. In Louisiana, for instance, soda made with&nbsp;<a href="https://lailluminator.com/2026/02/26/what-foods-are-forbidden-under-louisianas-new-snap-rules-take-our-quiz/" target="_blank">cane sugar is OK to purchase</a>, the Louisiana Illuminator reported.

The Kansas waiver goes into effect Feb. 15, 2027. Kelly’s news release said the state will use candy and soda definitions that are already set in the state’s food and sales tax laws:

Instituting the waiver requires four elements, including communication to retailers and recipients, as well as detailed evaluation, monitoring and compliance. The Kansas Department for Families and Children is seeking a contractor to help with implementation.

“Kansas is now a part of the MAHA (Make American Healthy Again) movement,” said Senate President Ty Masterson in a news release.

MAHA is&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hhs.gov/maha/index.html" target="_blank">a movement</a>&nbsp;led by U.S. Health and Human Services Sec. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to address the chronic disease epidemic and healthy eating habits.

House Speaker Dan Hawkins said the waiver approval was a “significant step toward ensuring taxpayer-funded food assistance programs prioritize nutrition and align with the original intent of the program.”

Laura Kelly said Wednesday.The U.S. Department of Agriculture&nbsp;<a href="https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.fns.usda.gov%2Fsnap%2Fwaivers%2Ffoodrestriction/1/0101019cbab54047-08a03f0a-e32d-46c2-9b36-524fa331e2bb-000000/0T9ZyQ1ireBQHHUS257jy1tmZiFh3-HIbXcpR_BLOjY=447" target="_blank">approved a waiver</a>&nbsp;for the Kansas Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.The state joins 21 other states in restricting candy and soda purchases with SNAP dollars, Kelly said in a news release. The Legislature passed a law last year requiring the administration to seek the waiver. Kelly vetoed the law but was overridden by GOP supermajorities in the House and Senate.While the governor said she supports policies that incentivize healthy eating, Kelly encouraged the USDA to develop a strategy to implement such waivers that reduce “confusion and uncertainty” for retailers and recipients.Kelly referred to confusion across the country about which products are considered candy and soda. Products people think of as candy may not meet the definition under the law, which has caused problems for retailers and recipients in other states. In Louisiana, for instance, soda made with&nbsp;<a href="https://lailluminator.com/2026/02/26/what-foods-are-forbidden-under-louisianas-new-snap-rules-take-our-quiz/" target="_blank">cane sugar is OK to purchase</a>, the Louisiana Illuminator reported.The Kansas waiver goes into effect Feb. 15, 2027. Kelly’s news release said the state will use candy and soda definitions that are already set in the state’s food and sales tax laws:<ul>
 <li>“Candy is defined as a preparation of sugar, honey, or other natural or artificial sweeteners in combination with chocolate, fruits, nuts, or other ingredients or flavorings in the form of bars, drops, or pieces. Candy does not include any preparation containing flour and shall require no refrigeration.</li><li>“Soft drink beverages are defined as nonalcoholic beverages that contain natural or artificial sweeteners. Soft drinks do not include beverages that contain milk or milk products, soy, rice, or similar milk substitutes or beverages that are greater than 50% vegetable or fruit juice by volume.”</li>
 </ul>Instituting the waiver requires four elements, including communication to retailers and recipients, as well as detailed evaluation, monitoring and compliance. The Kansas Department for Families and Children is seeking a contractor to help with implementation.“Kansas is now a part of the MAHA (Make American Healthy Again) movement,” said Senate President Ty Masterson in a news release.MAHA is&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hhs.gov/maha/index.html" target="_blank">a movement</a>&nbsp;led by U.S. Health and Human Services Sec. Robert F. Dodge City won the opening tip and drilled a three-pointer to begin the game and take an early 3-0 lead. Junction City junior Khaliel Walker answered with a three-pointer on the other end, and the Blue Jays successful shooting night began. The teams played a high level first quarter, and Junction City led 15-12 after the first period.&nbsp;

In the second quarter, Junction City began the quarter with another three from Walker,&nbsp; and then a basket by senior Jackson Hollie gave JCHS a 20-15 lead. The Red Demons of Dodge City battled back with Ty Scheck and Nathan Schulte keeping them in the game. Junction City led 27-25 at halftime.&nbsp;

Third quarter action is when the Junction City Blue Jays locked in and showed their full potential. The Blue Jays turned defense into offense, with several transition layups, and three different players getting a chance for the traditional three-point play. Junction City's Lovell Autry forced three straight steals that turned into layups and eight straight points for the senior in his last ever home game. The Blue Jays outscored Dodge City 25-8 in the quarter, and JCHS led 52-33 at the end of the third quarter.&nbsp;

In the fourth quarter, Junction City cruised to victory, and won the game 70-56. For Junction City, the Blue Jays had five players in double digits. They were: Lovell Autry (19 points), Brody Boeckman (14 points), Khaliel Walker (13 points), Jackson Hollie (12 points), and Jet Thompson with 10 points.&nbsp;
