On April 12th members of the Junction City community came together in a show of civic pride and environmental stewardship during the city-organized&nbsp;“Operation Clean Sweep.”&nbsp;This annual Earth Day celebration marked its&nbsp;17th successful year, with&nbsp;119 dedicated volunteers&nbsp;lending their time and effort to help clean up public spaces across Junction City.

City officials noted that a total of&nbsp;3,420 pounds of debris and trash&nbsp;was collected from city parks, entryways, and public properties. Since the event's inception, volunteers have removed 40,648 pounds, or 20.32 tons of trash from our city, making a significant and lasting impact on the environment and overall beauty of our community.

Confidence in the forecast and storms developing is increasing. However severe thunderstorm confidence remains low to medium due to limited energy for storms to strengthen on.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Geary USD 475 Associate Superintendent Dr. Debra Gustafson will retire in July. Her employment with the school district began in August of 1977 when she became the Assistant Secretary at Junction City High School.

Gustafson said that she was blessed to work for 47 years in USD 475 with brilliant, talented individuals. "I just know that it's time for me to step away and let the next generation of leaders lead into the future. I will forever be grateful for the opportunities offered me."

Gustafson noted that she will always be a "strong supporter and passionate about USD 475." Her retirement will be considered for approval by the Board of Education on Thursday.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – A Kansas 4-H official is praising the work of volunteers across the state, indicating that their contribution to the state’s largest youth leadership program is vital to the development of many Kansas kids. Sarah Maass, director of the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/">Kansas 4-H program</a>, said there were approximately 4,196 adult volunteers who helped with various 4-H activities during the most recently completed program year.“Volunteers play a crucial role in program delivery and advocacy of our extension and 4-H programs,” Maass said. “Our organization would not be where it is today without the work and support of our volunteer&nbsp;base.”

Maass cited a previous study reporting that volunteers donate an average nine hours per month, which translates to 37,764 volunteers hours in Kansas. According to Independent Sector – a coalition of nonprofits, foundations and corporate giving programs – the value of one volunteer hour in the United States is $33.49. Doing the math, the contribution of volunteers to the Kansas 4-H program during the past program year topped $1.26 million.

Recognizing that impact, the Kansas 4-H program is joining in National Volunteer Week, a national celebration for non-profit groups set for April 20-26 to recognize the contributions of those who donate their time to worthy causes team. 

Richard Becker of Manhattan became a 4-H volunteer in 2005 when his children enrolled in the program. Since then, he has become a Level II certified rifle and pistol instructor, helping to train other instructors in the 4-H Shooting Sports program.“4-H promotes positive youth development, no matter the activity,” Becker said. “I can’t think of a greater cause then to invest in our youth, who will be tomorrow’s leaders. There are so many friendships to be made locally, at the state level and even nationally.”&nbsp;

(Eisenhower, McFarland, Goldenrod Circle, etc.) will be affected and will experience low water pressure to no water pressure until repairs are complete.

Anna Neterer of Fort Riley Middle School USD 475 won the sixth grade Northeast District Division as she wrote about what Patriotism meant to her. Neterer also claimed second-place accolades with her essay at the Kansas state level, which is the highest honor a student can receive by the Elks. By placing in the top two, Neterer will not only be recognized at her school, but also receive a cash award.

Other highlights in the contest included Spring Valley Elementary USD 475 fifth grade students Ambria Fulmore and Claire Briemman placing second and third overall, respectively, in the fifth-grade division with their essays about Patriotism.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Peer-led” means the group will be co-facilitated by a survivor of gun violence who has had similar experiences.

The support group welcomes anyone who has personally experienced gun violence, whether you have witnessed an act of gun violence, been threatened or wounded with a gun, or had someone you know and cared for wounded or killed. This can include but is not limited to gun homicides, gun suicides, domestic violence involving a gun, and unintentional shootings.

People may use different words to describe living through gun violence: Some may use “victim,” others may use “survivor.” Some use neither. Knowing that each person experiences trauma and healing differently, we use the word “survivor“ to acknowledge pain and resilience—and to recognize the unacceptable daily consequences of gun violence that are the reality for too many Americans.

Most individuals may feel lost and may struggle with symptoms of anxiety, depression, anger, sadness, and isolation.

This WILL BE a Safe Zone and A License Clinical Social Worker (Andrea Slagle-Abrams) will be attending.

Felix Snipes Foundation will host a program for gun violence victims

JUNCTION CITY, Kan.&nbsp;- The Junction City High School Technology Student Association Chapter will be sending five students this summer to the National TSA Conference in Nashville, Tenn.

“I would like to congratulate our students for their great achievements and success as they competed with other school districts from across the state of Kansas. They have truly demonstrated their passion for learning and commitment to success. It inspires me a lot as an advisor. I really appreciate their fighting spirit and desire to win the competition,” said Glennrey Villamor, JCHS TSA Chapter Adviser.&nbsp;

Leading the way for the Blue Jays in Robotics was the team of&nbsp;Cole Greene and Luis Del Rosario&nbsp;who claimed first-place honors at the&nbsp;2025 Kansas State Technology Student Association Conference&nbsp;to qualify for nationals.&nbsp;Lance Locke, David Rosauer and Garrett Hogue&nbsp;also advanced to Nashville by earning second-place accolades.&nbsp;

Other notables included the&nbsp;Systems Control Technology&nbsp;trio of&nbsp;Locke, Rosauer and Hogue&nbsp;who will compete against the best-of-the-best in Tennessee after earning third-place honors in Salina.

&nbsp;Finally, the Technology Bowl team, which consisted of Tanner Hannivig, Locke and Hogue, wrapped-up the competition in Salina by claiming first-place accolades in the Technology Bowl division.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;2025 TSA National Conference, which will be held at the Gaylord Opryland on June 27 through July 1, allows USD 475 students the opportunity to demonstrate the STEM skills and knowledge they have acquired during the 2024-25 school year, while also gaining expertise from peers across the country.&nbsp;

Geary County Booking Photos April 12-14

Geary County Rural Fire spent the majority of Saturday afternoon and early evening on two rekindle fires back to back.

At about 2:30 p.m., units were dispatched to K-57 about 1 mile south of Grandview Plaza. Units helped the landowner control a fire that had rekindled.

As they were finishing that call, one came in for a fire in the area of Carr Road about 8 miles south.

Units controlled that fire and were assisted by Dwight Fire units. Grandview Plaza sent 5 personnel to assist Geary County units with mopping up the area and making a buffer zone around the fire scene.  The area was made up of bushy vegetation and trees.

 The Geary County Fire Auxiliary provided supper and rehab drinks for all on the fire scene.  Units were back in the Stations around 8:30 p.m.

Nick Perez has resigned as the head basketball coach at Junction City High School. Junction City High School Athletic Director Chris Bogenhagen has confirmed Perez's resignation. 

Perez led the Blue Jay program for nine years. 

Perez released a statement to JC Post. “I cannot thank Junction City enough for the past nine years, they have been amazing," Perez said. "The students, staff, coaches, players, and community have been tremendous. We couldn’t ask for anything better. To my players, you have all been special to our family. You accepted our kids like they were your siblings. We will miss you all very much. I know whoever takes over will keep this place running. I believe the program is in a very good place, better than when I got here back in 2017. Thank you Blue Jay Nation! Coach Perez and Family!"

Perez's team in 2022-2023 made it to the 6A State Tournament in Wichita. His best team, record-wise, was the 2023-2024 team that posted an 18-3 record and won the Centennial League for the first time in school history. This past season, JC finished the year with a record of 14-8 and lost in the sub-state championship game. 

Nick Perez has accepted a position as a basketball coach and teacher in Missouri, pending board approval.

Perez also coached boys and girls golf at JCHS.

Valley View Senior Life hosts an Easter Egg Hunt and Carnival

MANHATTAN, Kan. –&nbsp;It is time to resume lawn maintenance as spring weather arrives and grass begins to grow more quickly.

Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini says proper maintenance is a proactive approach to reduce weed growth and other stresses to the lawn while minimizing costs and the environmental impact.

The optimal mowing height for a home lawn depends on the type of grass, lawn use and time of year, Domenghini said.

“Mow at the high end of the recommended range for each species to improve drought resistance by encouraging deeper roots,” Domenghini said. “Only one-third of the grass leaf should be cut at a time.”

Removing more by lowering the mowing height results in physiological stress and possible heat or cold injury. If the lawn has become overgrown and needs more than one-third removed it will need to be done gradually with a few days between each mowing.

“Mowing frequency should be based on the growth rate of the lawn,” Domenghini said. She suggests not following a set schedule that may result in excessive clippings left on the grass.

“Proper timing of mowing means the grass clippings are shorter and can be returned to the&nbsp;lawn,” Domenghini said. “This contributes nitrogen back to the lawn.”

Long clippings can block sunlight to the live turf and promote disease, so they should be bagged and removed.

Maintaining a sharp blade on the mower is essential for a clean cut, Domenghini added. She said a dull mower blade tears the grass and causes the tips to turn whitish.

“Mow using a different pattern each time to prevent soil compaction and turf wear from the mower wheels. The grass blades lean the direction of the mower’s path so changing the pattern each time allows the grass to stand more upright,” Domenghini said.

Trees can be severely damaged if bumped by the mower, she warned. Even what appears to be a minor wound can result in death for the tree, so she recommends cultivating the soil surrounding trees to prevent grass and weeds from growing up close to the trunk.

Apply water in the early morning, and wait as long as possible between watering, Domenghini said. Nighttime watering promotes disease development.

“Some signs indicating that the turf needs water include darker bluish-green color, and when footprints remain in the lawn when someone walks across rather than leaf blades bouncing back in place,” Domenghini said. “Soak the soil to a depth of 6-8 inches and wait for signs that more water is needed.”

Fertilize only to maintain a moderately green color during favorable weather and minimally or not at all during times of weather stress, Domenghini said.

Over-fertilizing increases the water and mowing requirements. Domenghini suggests not fertilizing when heavy rain is expected, and never dump excess fertilizer into storm drains or sewers.

Lawn maintenance should start now

Junction City Commisssioner Al ( Alovence ) Gordon was in Geary County District Court Friday for a contested immunity motion hearing. Gordon and Corrieyonna Trice, who he had been in a relationship for nearly seven years, testified. Both face a misdemeanor charge of Domestic battery.

Authorities were called to their home on Jan. 23. Trice testified about a fight with Gordon revolving around hair clips that she had laid out to do her hair. The clips wound up in a shopping bag carried by Gordon with a dispute over who had initially possessed the clips.&nbsp; Trice claimed that during the argument&nbsp; Gordon grabbed her from behind and she was thrown on the floor, her shirt was ripped off and locks of her hair were pulled out. Supporting video evidence was submitted.

Trice claimed she did not hit Gordon in the face and didn't brandish a knife at him. Law enforcement testimony confirmed that her shirt had been ripped off and a back portion of her hair had been pulled out.&nbsp;

Prosecutor Krista Blaisdell argued Gordon was angry because Trice wanted her hair clips back. She urged that a defense motion for immunity by Gordon be denied. The court took the case under advisement and plans to to issue a written decision at a future time. Gordon has maintained his innocence during the case.

A May 5 status hearing and arraignment date has been scheduled for the defendant Gordon, and a May 19 status hearing for Trice.

The clips wound up in a shopping bag carried by Gordon with a dispute over who had initially possessed the clips.&nbsp; Trice claimed that during the argument&nbsp; Gordon grabbed her from behind and she was thrown on the floor, her shirt was ripped off and locks of her hair were pulled out. Supporting video evidence was submitted.Trice claimed she did not hit Gordon in the face and didn't brandish a knife at him. Law enforcement testimony confirmed that her shirt had been ripped off and a back portion of her hair had been pulled out.&nbsp;Prosecutor Krista Blaisdell argued Gordon was angry because Trice wanted her hair clips back. She urged that a defense motion for immunity by Gordon be denied. The court took the case under advisement and plans to to issue a written decision at a future time. Gordon has maintained his innocence during the case.A May 5 status hearing and arraignment date has been scheduled for the defendant Gordon, and a May 19 status hearing for Trice.
