The donation from the Masons is to benefit the CASA program, which has a mission to advocate for the best interests of children who have been abused, neglected, and/or human trafficked.

Crystal Quinn, the Executive Director of CASA of the Eighth Judicial District, stated that CASA volunteers are appointed by Judges to speak up for these children in court, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs are met as they navigate the foster care system.

CASA of Eighth Judicial District receives $5,000 Masonic Grant

MANHATTAN — Nearly 50 years after it was built, Kansas State University's&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ksvhc.org/">Veterinary Health Center</a>&nbsp;has renovated and enlarged its&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ksvhc.org/services/specialty-services/surgery/">small animal surgery</a>&nbsp;center. The construction efforts occurred with relatively swift surgical precision thanks to a concerted team effort. The results will increase the surgical capabilities at K-State while enhancing its educational mission.

Elizabeth Davis, interim dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony where she acknowledged all those who participated in the renovation."We've had the dream to upgrade our small animal surgery center for a long time, and it took a dream team to make this happen," Davis said. "It began with a design drawn up by Dr. Walter Renberg, the section head for small animal surgery, and turned into actual blueprints by Hadley Stolte, the lead architect and K-State alumnus, at Clark and Enerson. BHS Construction turned it into a reality at lightning speed."

Renberg said the renovation of the surgical suites is a huge step forward for the hospital. The construction took the center from three small operating rooms to five large ones, with centralized induction and recovery rooms that will increase efficiency.During construction, the small animal surgical services had to be temporarily rehoused in Mosier Hall.

Davis said the flexibility of the college's faculty and staff during the period of nine months — from Nov. 25, 2024-Aug. 29, 2025 — allowed the Veterinary Health Center to provide uninterrupted service to clients."We anticipate the care for patients will be better, and we should be able to accommodate more, and different, cases," Renberg said. "Ophthalmologic surgery suite improvements and the nurses' workspace changes will benefit our mission tremendously."&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Junction City Police Department has arrested a suspect in connection with the recent series of tire slashing incidents reported in the 200 to 400 blocks of West 5th and West 6th Streets, as well as other nearby areas.

Policce reported that on the morning of Monday, September 15, officers on patrol observed the ouspect, identified as William Kenneth Taylor, a 30-year-old man from Junction City. When officers attempted to make contact, Taylor fled on foot. After a short foot chase, he was taken into custody without injury or incident to himself, the officers, or members of the public.

Taylor was arrested in connection with 10 separate cases on allegations of Damage to Property and Burglary. He is currently being held in the Geary County Corrections Center awaiting his first appearance.

This investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with additional information or who has not yet reported damage is encouraged to contact the Junction City Police Department at (785) 762-5912. Those wishing to remain anonymous may submit tips through Geary County Crime Stoppers at (785) 762-8477.

Lifeline program helps Kansans in need stay connected

Popping a kernel of wheat in your mouth for a quick chew to test quality is almost instinctive, whether you are a Kansas farmer or the leader of a major East African conglomerate. Exploring a shared emphasis on wheat quality, as well as exploring the U.S grain production, handling and marketing systems, was the goal of a Tanzanian trade delegation that traveled to Kansas earlier this week.

The team was organized by U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) with support from Kansas Wheat. Team members included two members of the Bakhresa Group, a diversified, family-owned and operated business in East Africa that operates in agro-processing, food and beverages, packaging, logistics, media, marine transport and more. Bakhresa is the largest grain milling company in East Africa with operations in nine countries, including Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Rwanda, Burundi, Zimbabwe and South Africa.

After starting their mission in South Dakota, the team traveled to Kansas and visited the USDA Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS), the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center, and the IGP Institute. They also met with grain suppliers, handlers and exporters. The team aimed to gather firsthand information on U.S. wheat production and to gain a deeper understanding of the U.S. grain marketing system.

East Africa relies on imports of wheat to produce a wide range of daily bread products, from traditional mandazi, a fried bread eaten for breakfast, to newly introduced products like instant noodles. Russia has historically supplied more than 50% of imports; however, companies like Bakhresa are exploring ways to diversify their suppliers.

The team went to Justin Knopf’s machine shop near Gypsum to discuss everything from tractors to the dynamics of working in a family-owned business. For Knopf, a fifth-generation farmer who works alongside his father and brother, connecting with customers not too far removed from himself in the grain supply chain gave him goosebumps.

“The relationships between U.S. farmers and these gentlemen running a family business providing flour and baked goods in East Africa are significant to me,” Knopf said. “It’s meaningful to know that they probably have very similar conversations on a day-to-day basis as my brother, dad and I have. Even though it’s a different type of business, the conversations and the values are the same.”

Of course, the Bakhresa team members eagerly reached into the bucket of U.S. hard red winter (HRW) wheat Knopf had ready, even chewing a kernel or two, and noting the wheat’s premium quality.

“They were very pleased with the wheat sample from my field and my farm,” Knopf said. “That’s very reaffirming, and it gives me more motivation and inspiration for that mindset of continuous improvement. We are making sure that we are producing this type of product that when a team like this visits our farm, they want to pop it in their mouth and sample it.”

That positive impression carried through to an immediate sale. At the end of their visit to Kansas, Bakhresa purchased 5,000 metric tons (MT) (nearly 184,000 bushels) of U.S. hard red winter (HRW) for use in their Durban, South Africa mill.

From Kansas, the team will continue on to visit export facilities in Houston before attending an international baking exposition in Nevada. The Bakhresa leaders will return home having gained valuable insights into U.S. wheat quality, production and marketing systems, which will foster new connections and future business partnerships. For farmers like Knopf, missions like this one underscore the importance of considering the needs of international customers when making decisions on his farm.

“I am grateful because I learn something every time that we host a trade team or international visitors on our farm,” Knopf said. “I like to hear about what’s on their mind, what’s important in their business and their values, because that matters to me.”

“The team members were very knowledgeable, incredibly intelligent and asked great questions. They are the type of people that I would like to learn from and do business with.”

 </figure>KANSAS WHEAT COMMISSION&nbsp;Popping a kernel of wheat in your mouth for a quick chew to test quality is almost instinctive, whether you are a Kansas farmer or the leader of a major East African conglomerate. Exploring a shared emphasis on wheat quality, as well as exploring the U.S grain production, handling and marketing systems, was the goal of a Tanzanian trade delegation that traveled to Kansas earlier this week.The team was organized by U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) with support from Kansas Wheat. Team members included two members of the Bakhresa Group, a diversified, family-owned and operated business in East Africa that operates in agro-processing, food and beverages, packaging, logistics, media, marine transport and more. Bakhresa is the largest grain milling company in East Africa with operations in nine countries, including Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Rwanda, Burundi, Zimbabwe and South Africa.<figure>

 </figure>After starting their mission in South Dakota, the team traveled to Kansas and visited the USDA Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS), the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center, and the IGP Institute. They also met with grain suppliers, handlers and exporters. The team aimed to gather firsthand information on U.S. wheat production and to gain a deeper understanding of the U.S. grain marketing system.East Africa relies on imports of wheat to produce a wide range of daily bread products, from traditional mandazi, a fried bread eaten for breakfast, to newly introduced products like instant noodles. Russia has historically supplied more than 50% of imports; however, companies like Bakhresa are exploring ways to diversify their suppliers.The team went to Justin Knopf’s machine shop near Gypsum to discuss everything from tractors to the dynamics of working in a family-owned business. For Knopf, a fifth-generation farmer who works alongside his father and brother, connecting with customers not too far removed from himself in the grain supply chain gave him goosebumps.“The relationships between U.S. farmers and these gentlemen running a family business providing flour and baked goods in East Africa are significant to me,” Knopf said. “It’s meaningful to know that they probably have very similar conversations on a day-to-day basis as my brother, dad and I have. Even though it’s a different type of business, the conversations and the values are the same.”Of course, the Bakhresa team members eagerly reached into the bucket of U.S. hard red winter (HRW) wheat Knopf had ready, even chewing a kernel or two, and noting the wheat’s premium quality.“They were very pleased with the wheat sample from my field and my farm,” Knopf said. “That’s very reaffirming, and it gives me more motivation and inspiration for that mindset of continuous improvement. We are making sure that we are producing this type of product that when a team like this visits our farm, they want to pop it in their mouth and sample it.”That positive impression carried through to an immediate sale. At the end of their visit to Kansas, Bakhresa purchased 5,000 metric tons (MT) (nearly 184,000 bushels) of U.S. hard red winter (HRW) for use in their Durban, South Africa mill.From Kansas, the team will continue on to visit export facilities in Houston before attending an international baking exposition in Nevada. The Bakhresa leaders will return home having gained valuable insights into U.S. wheat quality, production and marketing systems, which will foster new connections and future business partnerships. For farmers like Knopf, missions like this one underscore the importance of considering the needs of international customers when making decisions on his farm.“I am grateful because I learn something every time that we host a trade team or international visitors on our farm,” Knopf said. “I like to hear about what’s on their mind, what’s important in their business and their values, because that matters to me.”“The team members were very knowledgeable, incredibly intelligent and asked great questions. Wheat Scoop: East African delegation explores U.S. wheat advantage in Kansas

After a high-scoring game in 2024, this year's game, featuring the Junction City Blue Jays and Lawrence High Chesty Lions, was a defensive slugfest. Junction City scored late and won 14-7 in Lawrence on Friday night.

The Chesty Lions got the ball first and went three-and-out on the first possession of the game. Lawrence punted the ball away, and the Blue Jays took over. JC was moving the ball before fumbling near midfield. Despite the turnover, the Blue Jay defense forced another three-and-out. That was a common theme on Friday night. At the end of the first quarter, the game was still scoreless.

To begin the second quarter, the Blue Jays faced a fourth and goal from the eight-yard line. Senior quarterback Conrad Gomez dropped back to pass and floated the ball into the back of the endzone, and it was secured by senior Jamarcus Tyson for a touchdown. The ball was deflected by Lawrence, but great concentration and a great catch by Tyson gave the Blue Jays a 7-0 lead.

Following the Junction City scoring drive, Lawrence responded with their own touchdown drive and tied the game at 7-7. The Blue Jays were driving at the end of the half and ran out of time, and the game was tied at halftime.

The second half is when the defenses really cranked up their intensity. Junction City moved the ball offensively, but was denied on fourth down twice and also missed a 30-yard field goal from the right hash. Lawrence, on the other hand, struggled moving the ball, with the Blue Jay defensive line causing major trouble for the Chesty Lions.

With 3:53 to go in the game, the Blue Jays got the ball back after a nice punt return by senior Lovell Autry. Junction City had the ball in plus territory at the Lions' 45-yard line with the score still tied at 7-7. The Blue Jays received a big run by junior running back Aaron Woods down to the 32-yard line with under three minutes to go. Then, on a big third down, Gomez found junior wide receiver Brody Boeckman on the sideline, who caught the ball at the 20-yard line with 1:35 to go in the game. The very next play, Gomez hit Boeckman in the middle of the field, and Boeckman scored the go-ahead and game-winning touchdown with 1:25 to go in the game. The Blue Jays held on to win 14-7 and improve to 2-0 on the season.

Junction City High School head football coach Randall Zimmerman was pleased with his team pulling out the win in a tough road environment. “I am very, very proud of our guys,” Zimmerman said. “Our defense tonight was so good, and our offense moved the ball well; we just need to be better at finishing drives.“ Zimmerman also complimented his team for their toughness and battling through some adversity throughout the game.

Blue Jays score late, Beat Lawrence in a defensive battle

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. – &nbsp;Earlier this week the Junction City High School Blue Jay Band made its annual trek to perform at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson. One problem, the weather didn’t cooperate.“It was quite an experience as it rained all morning in Hutchinson and shortly after the band arrived, they cancelled the rest of the performing bands that morning,” said Samantha Boxberger, JCHS music teacher.

After hearing the unfortunate news that they wouldn’t be able to perform, the Blue Jays adjusted and were hopeful that they would be able to perform with other bands later in the day once the weather passed. It never cleared up though, so Boxberger, Jared Morris and others allowed their musicians to make the most of an unfortunate situation by letting them attend the fair so that they could not only see all the fun exhibits and animals but also taste some of the amazing food.“Even though it rained the entire afternoon, our musicians had a great time bonding and exploring all that the fair had to offer,” said Boxberger.

With the rain coming down harder throughout the day, the Blue Jays decided to head back to Junction City early but were met with a surprise as all of the rain had made the grass parking lot at the fairgrounds an absolute mess.“All three of our charter busses got stuck so deep in the mud that we could not leave. Each bus tried to pull out a different direction, but no method worked. There were numerous phone calls for tow trucks, possible replacement busses and even tractors from the fairgrounds who tried to help get us free, but nothing worked. It honestly felt like watching a sitcom take place outside the bus window,” said Boxberger. After almost 2 hours, a second tractor was brought in and was finally able to pull all three of the busses out. Cheers from all three busses erupted as the Blue Jays were finally able to break lose and head back home after a long, but memorable day at the Kansas State Fair.

“Our musicians were great sports though, often cheering when they saw another bus trying to move and make any progress. Although they were disappointed to miss their first festival performance, they were able to bond with their fellow musicians and make some unforgettable memories,” said Boxberger.Finally, it’s only appropriate that the Blue Jays rock and pop halftime show this year is called, Storm Surge, as they definitely brought the Storm Surge with them on their adventure to Hutch.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The second report on the <a href="https://www.kumc.edu/school-of-nursing/about/kansas-nursing-workforce-center.html">state of nursing in Kansas</a> was released by the Kansas Nursing Workforce Center, which is based at the University of Kansas School of Nursing.

The center formed in 2023 to address the shortage of nurses across the state. 

Compiled from 25 sources that include state and national databases and surveys, the report provides information on the supply and characteristics of nurses in Kansas.

“We look at the data through different vantage points. We look at the demographics of nurses: Who are they? How were they educated? How old are they? Where (in what setting) do they practice? We look at the data geographically: Where are they located?” said Barbara MacArthur, M.N., FAAN, director of the Kansas Nursing Workforce Center and clinical associate professor at KU School of Nursing. “And we look at it in terms of access to care, because our mission is that wherever and whenever Kansans need care, they have access to it.”

The report helps hospitals, health care systems, long-term care facilities, nursing schools, government agencies and other stakeholders make informed decisions that increase and support the workforce in the state and ultimately improve the health of Kansans.

The first report, issued in September of 2024, provided a snapshot of the state of nursing in Kansas with one year of data from 2022. This second report is based on data covering 10 years, from 2015 to 2025.

The new report shows that the number of nurses in Kansas has declined since 2019, and the nursing workforce is aging — 22.1% of registered nurses (RNs) and 20.5% of licensed practical nurses (LPNs) are 60 or older — with not enough younger nurses replacing them. And 25.9% of RNs and 23.4% of LPNs are planning to retire or leave the profession in the next five years. The report also notes that the population in Kansas is aging as well, and aging populations require more care.

Meanwhile, 85% of Kansas nurses are actively employed, which is lower than the national average. “If you look at nurses holding a license in Kansas, it doesn’t appear we have a crisis,” said Terry Siek, MSN, director of clinical services at the Kansas Hospital Association. “We need to be better at helping people see beyond that statistic to understand that we have quite a few nurses with a license that do not practice in Kansas, or do not practice at all.”

• The ratio of nurses to Kansans has not grown in the last 10 years, and the ratio of LPNs available to care for Kansans (currently, one LPN for every 322 Kansans) has decreased sharply. • Kansas has nursing care deserts, particularly in the western and southeast parts of the state. Five counties have fewer than 20 RNs and 41 counties have 20 or fewer LPNs. Five counties have no advanced practice nurses (APRNs), and 50 have fewer than 10 APRNs. • Kansas nurses work more jobs and longer hours. The percentage of Kansas RNs who hold two or more jobs rose from 15.7% in 2015 to 21.9% in 2024; during that period, the percentage who work more than 40 hours a week rose from 23.8% to 30.8%. • Wage gaps — between nurses who practice and those who teach — contribute to shortages of nursing faculty. These faculty are needed to train future nurses. • Multiple pathways are available to become a nurse. The report provides data on the different education levels that can lead to a career in nursing. Nearly 54% of RNs in Kansas began their career with a baccalaureate degree, 31% started with an associate degree and just 8% started their career as an LPN.

Making different pathways to a nursing career known to potential future nurses is part of the Kansas Nursing Workforce Center’s work, MacArthur said. Earlier this year, the center received a $1 million grant from the Kansas Board of Regents to increase nursing school applications. In addition to creating a unified application for all schools that provide nursing education in the state, staff of the center plan to build a web-based tool for people interested in nursing education to show potential nursing students what the options are for a career in nursing.

“Nurses make a difference,” MacArthur said, noting that health outcomes are improved when there is a higher ratio of nurses for a population. “Kansans, wherever they are, need to have access to good nursing care.”

We look at the data geographically: Where are they located?” said Barbara MacArthur, M.N., FAAN, director of the Kansas Nursing Workforce Center and clinical associate professor at KU School of Nursing. “And we look at it in terms of access to care, because our mission is that wherever and whenever Kansans need care, they have access to it.”The report helps hospitals, health care systems, long-term care facilities, nursing schools, government agencies and other stakeholders make informed decisions that increase and support the workforce in the state and ultimately improve the health of Kansans.The first report, issued in September of 2024, provided a snapshot of the state of nursing in Kansas with one year of data from 2022. This second report is based on data covering 10 years, from 2015 to 2025.The new report shows that the number of nurses in Kansas has declined since 2019, and the nursing workforce is aging — 22.1% of registered nurses (RNs) and 20.5% of licensed practical nurses (LPNs) are 60 or older — with not enough younger nurses replacing them. And 25.9% of RNs and 23.4% of LPNs are planning to retire or leave the profession in the next five years. The report also notes that the population in Kansas is aging as well, and aging populations require more care.Meanwhile, 85% of Kansas nurses are actively employed, which is lower than the national average. “If you look at nurses holding a license in Kansas, it doesn’t appear we have a crisis,” said Terry Siek, MSN, director of clinical services at the Kansas Hospital Association. “We need to be better at helping people see beyond that statistic to understand that we have quite a few nurses with a license that do not practice in Kansas, or do not practice at all.”Other findings from the report include:• The ratio of nurses to Kansans has not grown in the last 10 years, and the ratio of LPNs available to care for Kansans (currently, one LPN for every 322 Kansans) has decreased sharply. • Kansas has nursing care deserts, particularly in the western and southeast parts of the state. Five counties have fewer than 20 RNs and 41 counties have 20 or fewer LPNs. Five counties have no advanced practice nurses (APRNs), and 50 have fewer than 10 APRNs. • Kansas nurses work more jobs and longer hours. The percentage of Kansas RNs who hold two or more jobs rose from 15.7% in 2015 to 21.9% in 2024; during that period, the percentage who work more than 40 hours a week rose from 23.8% to 30.8%. • Wage gaps — between nurses who practice and those who teach — contribute to shortages of nursing faculty. These faculty are needed to train future nurses. • Multiple pathways are available to become a nurse. The report provides data on the different education levels that can lead to a career in nursing. Nearly 54% of RNs in Kansas began their career with a baccalaureate degree, 31% started with an associate degree and just 8% started their career as an LPN.Making different pathways to a nursing career known to potential future nurses is part of the Kansas Nursing Workforce Center’s work, MacArthur said. Earlier this year, the center received a $1 million grant from the Kansas Board of Regents to increase nursing school applications. In addition to creating a unified application for all schools that provide nursing education in the state, staff of the center plan to build a web-based tool for people interested in nursing education to show potential nursing students what the options are for a career in nursing.“Nurses make a difference,” MacArthur said, noting that health outcomes are improved when there is a higher ratio of nurses for a population. “Kansans, wherever they are, need to have access to good nursing care.”

"We were stunned, heartbroken and we were unsure what the future would hold."

The World Trade Center Twin Towers and the Pentagon were the site of plane attacks and another plane was taken down in a Pennsylvania field. Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives and thousands more were injured. "We saw the strength of our nation. We came together," said Boeckman. "We were above all else Americans."

First reponders were recognized for their service.

To local residents Boeckman also said, "We are Geary County. We stand for each other, we care for one another and when challenges come whether from afar or from close to home we meet them head on together."

The ceremony included the laying of a wreath, taps and a 21-gun salute.

The program printed for the event also included information about Geary County native William Otto "Bill" Caspar, who was killed at the World Trade Center. Caspar was a graduate of Saint Francis Xavier High School and Kansas State University.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– K-State Athletics and Athletics Director Gene Taylor have announced a new annual fundraising effort, Fighting Ever Fighting, to position K-State Athletics in this new era of college athletics and enhance the world-class student-athlete experience through philanthropic giving via the Ahearn Fund, K-State's National Fund for Student-Athlete Excellence.&nbsp;

The recent court settlement in the House vs. NCAA&nbsp;class action lawsuit, which allows athletics departments to share revenues with student-athletes for use of their name, image, and likeness, signals a transformative era in college athletics. Beyond&nbsp;revenue sharing, the settlement will also provide new scholarship opportunities, as well as changes to roster limits.

This historic settlement will have a monumental impact on college athletics, leveling the NIL playing field by creating a new structure with a uniform spending cap across all Power 4 institutions.

Dr. Robert (Bob) Smith, former Fort Riley Museums Director, will join in person as the featured speaker. His presentation will spotlight veterans' connection with history. The memories of veterans and their descriptions of their service—through letters, oral histories and photos —provide historians with a vital window into the past. For a military historian, veterans’ recollections of history’s most significant, and often harrowing, events offer perspectives not found in the official military reports. Historians who write about such events find these stories and memories offer a “human face” to the dispassionate military reports and official documents used.

Smith was born in Nebraska and majored in history at the University of Nebraska. Growing up in a military family, he has always had a passion for military history. His father was a World War II veteran and career Air Force senior NCO. He returned to academia in 1998, earning his MA and Ph.D. at Kansas State University in 2004 and 2008, respectively. In 2011, Smith became Director of the Fort Riley Museum Complex, Fort Riley. He directed the complete remodel of both the U.S. Cavalry Museum and the 1st Infantry Division Museum before retiring in 2024. He teaches military history for the UFM Community Learning Center in partnership with the Kansas State University and the University of Kansas’ Osher Lifelong Learning Program. He has coauthored a book on the history of Fort Riley and is the author of numerous articles on military history.

His presentation will spotlight veterans' connection with history. The memories of veterans and their descriptions of their service—through letters, oral histories and photos —provide historians with a vital window into the past. For a military historian, veterans’ recollections of history’s most significant, and often harrowing, events offer perspectives not found in the official military reports. Historians who write about such events find these stories and memories offer a “human face” to the dispassionate military reports and official documents used.Smith was born in Nebraska and majored in history at the University of Nebraska. Growing up in a military family, he has always had a passion for military history. His father was a World War II veteran and career Air Force senior NCO. He returned to academia in 1998, earning his MA and Ph.D. at Kansas State University in 2004 and 2008, respectively. In 2011, Smith became Director of the Fort Riley Museum Complex, Fort Riley. He directed the complete remodel of both the U.S. Cavalry Museum and the 1st Infantry Division Museum before retiring in 2024. He teaches military history for the UFM Community Learning Center in partnership with the Kansas State University and the University of Kansas’ Osher Lifelong Learning Program. He has coauthored a book on the history of Fort Riley and is the author of numerous articles on military history.The 2025 programming season is dedicated to our nation’s veterans.
