RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a violent crime in Manhattan.

Just before 5p.m. Thursday, officers filed a report of aggravated burglary and aggravated sexual battery, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.&nbsp; 

A 55-year-old woman reported an unknown male suspect entered her home and sexually battered her. Due to the nature of the crime reported, police released no additional information.

The longtime Director of the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library, Susan Moyer, was honored by members of the community during her retirement reception Thurday evening. She is wrapping up 33 years of service on Oct. 31.&nbsp;

Moyer, who is originally from Junction City,&nbsp; holds bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Texas. She said when she first arrived in 1992 the internet was new. "I was here when we had our first loan work station for internet with a dial-up connection." Since then that service has expanded and the Library has advanced into the web based world. "We embraced web based reading. We're working right now on a project to turn our community information directory into a website knowjc.org. That's definitely an evolution that's taken place."

Another high point has involved enbracing the role as a community information provider, development of a community history archive where&nbsp; local newspapers and yearbooks have been digitized, a community calendar and smaller community resource guides.

Moyer's future plans include traveling with her husband, continuing to do volunteer work and having a chance to enjoy the holidays without working full time.

Susan was presented with gifts from the Library Board of Directors and Friends of the Library.

&nbsp;JUNCTION CITY, Kan. (Oct. 22, 2025) – Something exciting is happening at the 12th Street
Community Center, opening new doors for youth, families and the community. Thanks to the
vision of Parks and Recreation Director Joshua Gray and Esports Coordinator Aaron
Sheltrown, Junction City’s first Esports &amp; Technology Program now has a state-of-the-art
space — the Twin Valley Esports Arena: Home of the Twisters.

What began as the Twisters Esports Arena now proudly carries the Twin Valley name
through a generous partnership with Kansas’ largest independently owned broadband
provider. The facility is powered by blazing-fast dual 8 Gig fiber connections and robust
network equipment provided by Twin Valley. As part of the multi-year partnership, Twin
Valley is delivering on-site technical support for the Twisters’ first major tournament and
installing additional infrastructure to support future large-scale events. The arena officially
opened in May 2025 and already has exciting events on the horizon.

The arena isn’t just about competition. Participants gain teamwork, strategy and digital skills
that open doors beyond the screen, preparing them for school, work and life.


“As the Esports Coordinator, I’ve built the Twisters from the ground up,” Sheltrown explained.
“That meant designing the program, creating team structure, purchasing equipment on a
modest budget and developing educational sessions that go beyond gaming. My goal has
always been to give our players not just a team, but a foundation for their futures.”


For Twin Valley, powering the arena is part of a broader promise to give back to the
communities it serves in ways that create lasting impact.

Looking ahead to 2026, the program is planning six major tournaments, including the
headline event Blizzard Brawls on Jan. 24, 2026, featuring Tekken 8 and pro wrestling,

expected to draw participants from a multi-state region.

The new library, will be open to the public to view from 3:30 through 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30.The new space will feature new furniture and technology provided by School Specialty. Research shows that transformed learning environments support teachers' needs and can result in enthusiastic learners for years to come.Lincoln Elementary is one of five Extra Yard Makeovers provided with the support of Eckrich that are in the works through October 2025. 

The project is part of the CFP Foundation’s mission to uplift teachers in grades K-12 and made possible through the support of School Specialty and Eckrich.This specific city holds a special place in the Eckrich team's heart as Junction City plays a critical role in bringing Eckrich products to family kitchen tables every day. Dr. Beth Hudson worked for more than 40 years in Geary USD 475 ranging from elementary school teacher to Director of Elmentary Education and Associate Superintendent of Schools. She retired but is now seeking reelection to the Board of Education.

Hudson said she wanted to continue to be of service. "Made sense to me where I had already invested all those years of my life." She&nbsp;noted that she has been a part of USD 475 in the best of times where there was a culture of high expectations and learning for all. "That's something that I want to continue. i don't want to lose track of Junction City being one of the best districts in the state."

Hudson wants to retain and hire the best staff in USD 475 by supporting them and continue to be innovative through pushing for research based instruction. She also mentioned that discipline is a concern in the school district and she wants a committee to continue working&nbsp; on the issue. Hudson feels budgets are priorities and so she wants to make sure there is investment in the staff in their budgets, what teachers are saying about discipline and what can be done to help them.

Thomas Wesoloski, Zeek Torres, Kristian James and Mark Hatcher are all seeking terms on the school board. The election is Nov. 4.

There have been past references but the message was repeated at the Military Affairs Breakfast in Junction City Thursday. The majority of the 1st Infantry Division will deploy in the spring of 2026.

MAC Director Rob Wilson relayed information provided to him by the scheduled guest speaker for the event, Division Command Sgt. Major Derek Noyes, who was unable to attend because the ability to engage in the community has been put on hold due to the federal government shutdown.

One emphasis included that the Division is still ready to fight. They continue to train.

There is a belief that the Fort Riley Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard is staying and will support the Post and the midwest.

Future plans include a Hall of Heroes dedication on March 26, three new barracks for the 5th Engineer Battalion and there are plans to renovate a child youth center. There is an effort to seek long term grants to develop new transit options for Fort Riley.&nbsp;

During the shutdown local Army families received a paycheck Oct. 15 and&nbsp; Army Emergency Relief has received more than 8,000 requests for funding throughout the military. If the community can come together on support it is encouraged.

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. - Geary County Schools USD 475 has earned recognition from the Kansas State Department of Education for the 2024-25 school year in the following areas: Social-Emotional Growth, Kindergarten Readiness, Individual Plan of Study, Civic Engagement and Academically Prepared for Postsecondary.

“I’m so excited that we were able to be recognized by the Kansas State Department of Education as we were able to move up in several areas. These awards reflect the collective effort of everyone in our district towards school improvement while celebrating the achievements of our students and staff,” said Alicia Scofield, USD 475 Director of Teaching and Learning.

For the 2024-25 school year, USD 475 earned a Silver Star in Social-Emotional Growth, Individual Plan of Study and Civic Engagement with the addition of an individual school recognition. The district was also honored with a Bronze Star for its Kindergarten Readiness and a Copper Star in Academically Prepared for Postsecondary.

In addition, USD 475 had one school in Morris Hill Elementary earn the Civic Advocacy Network Award for its commitment to civic engagement for students. KSDE will be recognizing the Panthers during state webinars, while also sending a banner to display in the school.

In all, the district has had a total of 13 schools be recognized in the last three years in civic engagement at the state level, which includes Eisenhower Elementary, Junction City High School, Junction City Middle School, Fort Riley Middle School, Fort Riley Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, Milford Elementary, Morris Hill Elementary, Seitz Elementary, Spring Valley Elementary, Ware Elementary, Washington Elementary and Westwood Elementary. USD 475 Honored by Kansas State Department of Education

Washington is shut down – again – and Americans have every right to be frustrated. Once again, the dysfunction in D.C. threatens to disrupt lives far beyond the Beltway. And while the political blame game plays out, Kansans are left wondering how this gridlock will affect their families and their livelihoods.

It’s important to know how we got here in the first place. A clean, short-term funding bill — known as a continuing resolution — was introduced by Republicans to keep the government open for seven more weeks.

This measure would have given Congress the time to complete the normal appropriations process, work towards a balanced budget, and hammer out the details of next year’s funding. But to pass in the Senate, the bill needed bipartisan support — at least 60 votes — which means cooperation across the aisle. Unfortunately, that cooperation didn’t transpire.

Like many Americans, I am frustrated that we are in this situation. But while some federal offices may close their doors or scale back operations, I want to be clear with the people of Kansas: my office is open, and we’re still working for you.

Whether you are a farmer navigating USDA programs, a veteran in need of assistance, a federal worker who's been furloughed, a foreigner in need of a Visa, or a senior who relies on Social Security or is signing up for Medicare for the first time, my office is here and ready to help.

Hardworking Kansans shouldn’t have to pay the price for Washington’s dysfunction. The everyday needs of Americans are not put on pause while the government is shut down – and that is why constituent services have always been, and will continue to be, one of my top priorities.

Right now, constituent services are even more important. I understand that this shutdown creates real-life challenges for hardworking people, and my office is committed to ensuring Kansans get the answers they need.

I remain hopeful that five Democrats will vote with us to reopen the government sooner rather than later. But until that happens, know this: our doors are open, our phones are on, and we will continue to serve Kansans — shutdown or not.

And while the political blame game plays out, Kansans are left wondering how this gridlock will affect their families and their livelihoods.It’s important to know how we got here in the first place. A clean, short-term funding bill — known as a continuing resolution — was introduced by Republicans to keep the government open for seven more weeks.This measure would have given Congress the time to complete the normal appropriations process, work towards a balanced budget, and hammer out the details of next year’s funding. But to pass in the Senate, the bill needed bipartisan support — at least 60 votes — which means cooperation across the aisle. Unfortunately, that cooperation didn’t transpire.Like many Americans, I am frustrated that we are in this situation. But while some federal offices may close their doors or scale back operations, I want to be clear with the people of Kansas: my office is open, and we’re still working for you.Whether you are a farmer navigating USDA programs, a veteran in need of assistance, a federal worker who's been furloughed, a foreigner in need of a Visa, or a senior who relies on Social Security or is signing up for Medicare for the first time, my office is here and ready to help.Hardworking Kansans shouldn’t have to pay the price for Washington’s dysfunction. The everyday needs of Americans are not put on pause while the government is shut down – and that is why constituent services have always been, and will continue to be, one of my top priorities.Right now, constituent services are even more important. I understand that this shutdown creates real-life challenges for hardworking people, and my office is committed to ensuring Kansans get the answers they need.I remain hopeful that five Democrats will vote with us to reopen the government sooner rather than later. The on-air team, including a familiar former Abilene resident,&nbsp;plans to walk through downtown and visit with businesses and community members. Filming starts early to accommodate the live airtime on the East Coast.

Residents are encouraged to line the sidewalks, wear Abilene gear, bring signs, and help create a welcoming, energetic atmosphere for viewers across the country. While the exact stops are determined by the producers, the planned route begins at Little Ike Park, continues east along NW 3rd Street to Buckeye Avenue, and circles back to conclude at Amanda’s Bakery &amp; Bistro.

Participants will include the Abilene High School Marching Band, Great Plains Manufacturing, Russell Stover Chocolates, National Greyhound Association,&nbsp;and a variety of other Abilene and downtown businesses.&nbsp;Businesses are encouraged to have their lights on, and Dickinson County Emergency Management&nbsp;will provide additional lighting to illuminate the area.

“This is an invaluable promotional opportunity for Abilene to showcase our community and businesses to a nationwide audience,” said Julie Roller Weeks, Director of the Abilene Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau.&nbsp;“The incredible spirit of our businesses and residents—from opening early to showing up with enthusiasm—is exactly what makes Abilene special.”

National Morning Broadcast to Film Live in Downtown Abilene

TOPEKA—The Kansas Supreme Court has reappointed 28 chief judges for terms that begin January 1, 2026, and end December 31, 2027.

Chief Judge Benjamin Sexton who was reappointed in the 8th Judicial District, which is composed of Geary, Dickinson, Marion, and Morris counties. He has served as a district judge since 2001 and chief judge since August 2021.

Sexton graduated from Kansas State University and Washburn University School of Law. He worked as a prosecutor and in private practice before he was appointed district judge.

Chief Judge Grant Bannister was reappointed in the 21st Judicial District, which is composed of Clay and Riley counties. He has served as a district judge since 2016 and chief judge since 2019.

Bannister graduated from Fort Hays State University and the University of Kansas School of Law. Before becoming a judge, he was in private practice in Manhattan and served as an adjunct professor teaching ethics in the College of Business at Kansas State University

The Rotary Club of Junction City recently welcomed five candidates running for positions on the Geary County School Board to its weekly luncheon meeting.

Candidates Zeek Torres, Kristian James, Mark Hatcher, Thomas Wesoloski, and Beth Hudson each had the opportunity to introduce themselves, share why they wish to serve, and discuss their vision for the future of local education.

The 2009 Junction City High School graduate feels that there needs to be change. He asks how do we make things better? James favors more community involvement.

One focus area would include teachers, students, para-educators and additional staff. "How do we support our teachers? How do we give them the things that they're needing? " James wants to reduce teacher burnout and get them to want to remain in the school district instead of moving to other schools or districts. James also favors more parent involvement&nbsp; and reduction in student burnout.&nbsp;

"Community outreach is a big thing for me." He asks how to use technology to keep everyone informed, what would people want from him as a Board member,and he feels that communication is a key to bringing the community together.

Other candidates for school board include Mark Hatcher, Dr. Beth Hudson,&nbsp;Zeek Torres and Thomas Wesoloski. Three seats are up for election.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement investigating a vehicle theft have made an arrest.

Just after 1:30a.m. Wednesday,&nbsp; officers filed a report of vehicle theft in the 1900 block of Crescent Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

An 85-year-old woman reported a suspect known to her stole her 2002 Ford F-150. 

Just after 2 a.m., police arrested 33-year-old&nbsp; Michael Brooks of Manhattan,&nbsp; in the 900 block of Humboldt Street on requested charge of criminal deprivation of property, driving while suspended, possession of marijuana, interference with a law enforcement officer and trafficking of contraband into correction facility. 

He met the requirement of a $7,500 and is no longer in custody.

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. -&nbsp;Third grade students in Anika Hesse’s class at Seitz Elementary USD 475 recently found out that they will have a new companion for the 2025-26 school year, an adopted baby calf named Cary from Rottinghaus Holstein Farm in Seneca, Kansas.

The Heifer calf, which is a part of the Discover Dairy program, was born on Tuesday, Sept. 16 and is 32 inches tall and weighs 84 pounds. While its daily caretaker will be Farmer Stacy, the Dragons will receive monthly updates on how she is doing while also learning how farmers care for their animals.“My class is super excited. Most of our military students will never have the opportunity to see or experience anything in the farming world even though they have lived in Kansas,” said Hesse. “I was one of those military kids that never stepped foot on a farm or have any knowledge about farming, so I think it really will help paint a picture of what life is like in Kansas for many people.”

Throughout the next couple of weeks, Hesse plans to use the project to tie it into science, writing and some social emotional skills, while also exploring fun lessons about responsibility, agriculture and dairy farming. The program was also gracious enough to send over a stuffed animal cow, which Hesse is going to allow her students to take home with them over the weekend so that they can journal all about its weekend adventures on Fort Riley and surrounding areas.“We do not know if they are able to have a field trip just yet, so I told my class that they will have to earn it and am hoping that this is a great motivator for them to earn the opportunity to visit their adopted cow,” said Hesse.

Community members can also get in on the fun, beginning on November 3-5, as everyone will get to vote for Cary as America’s favorite calf by visiting www.discoverydairy.com/vote. The Discover Dairy program is an engaging, interactive, cross-curricular educational series that meets common CORE standards for math, science and reading. It is designed to demonstrate where milk comes from and the many ways dairy farms contribute to our world. There are five lessons included in the series, with each including a video motivator, comprehensive lesson plan, reading guide, board displays, and assessment-based worksheet.

&nbsp; Manhattan Fire crews responded to a. house fire Tuesday night at 1420 Hillcrest Drive, according to a social media report..  Upon arrival, flames and smoke were visible.  Crews made an aggressive interior attack and search of the residence, leading to the rescue of one dog.&nbsp; The fire department released no additional details.

In the late 1940s several Junction City pilots befriended the Ritter brothers who offered the use of a forty-acre plot three miles west on KS 18 (just south of the present-day high school). Affectionately referred to as “windy knob”. It had three runways of about 1200 to 1400 feet. This served as Junction City’s airport for about three years.

In 1949, a new City Manager, Basgall, saw a need for a city airport. In 1950 pasture land was condemned for airport use only and 75 years ago on October 15, 1950 the airport official opened. They were able to obtain federal and state funding to build the current airport called 3JC (in FAA nomenclature). Bill Price assisted with some ideas for the airport as well as seeding the runways from a homemade spreader in his Piper J-4. As the development of the airport grew, Bill was asked to be the airport manager. He was already working for the US Postal Dept. and was not able to accept employment with another government entity. So, Jim’s wife Mable was asked to be the manager when it opened, which also happened to be her birthday. At the opening, the airport had three grass runways, 2 of 2400 feet and the 18-36 runway was 3600 feet in length. The terminal building was built in 1954 and very similar as seen today. The maintenance building, where the medivac Life Star helicopter is currently, was also completed.

Harvey Elton, owner of a paint and glass shop on N. Adams, built the first long hanger that was all open bays at the time. Clarence Day, which owned a cleaning shop on N. Washington built an enclosed building, currently used by Jeremy Gorman. During the 1970’s several other T hangers were built by the city and later sold to individuals.

The airport needed a mechanic and flight instructor so Bill who was a master auto mechanic stepped up. Charlie Wood of Clay Center helped him obtain his A&amp;E, while agricultural pilot, CJ Tolliver helped him obtain his Commercial and Instructors certificates.

The summer of 1951 brought a big flood, and 3JC was one of only a few airports able to stay open during that period. The army relocated several airplanes from the Fort Riley Flying Club. Numerous local pilots flew mercy missions including the air drop of diabetic and other medicines. They also dropped food items to rural families as well as food and medicines for cattle. It was a very active summer.

Around 1956, Bill was getting burned out trying to balance a civilian job and 6-8 hours daily at the airport and weekends fulfilling aircraft owners’ mechanical needs. Jim and Mable turned over airport management to Rodney Ratts. In time, Jim Putney, Sr. who had taken over the agricultural operation, most instruction and mechanical work became the airport manager. Clarence Freeman followed as airport manager and began working the main shop when Putney moved his operation to a different hanger.&nbsp; The airport was renamed Freeman Field as homage to Clarence and efforts at 3JC. Ron Nordt served as airport manager and occupied the “big” hanger on the north side of the parking lot. Marvin Hornbostel, a civilian Ft Riley helicopter mechanic, began doing maintenance at the airport and later became the next airport manager.

At one time 3JC was known as the most convenient airport in the area. Just a long walk and you could be in the heart of the city.&nbsp; Now Freeman Field is in the heart of the city. No longer on the outskirts of town, but land-locked. It is still very active with pilot instruction, aircraft maintenance, construction, and restoration, as well as having Life Star, Civil Air Patrol and Experimental Aircraft Association based there. The airport has served many civilian, businesses, and military aircraft over the years and continues to do so.

 </figure>--Photos and article submitted by Ken Mortensen.In the late 1940s several Junction City pilots befriended the Ritter brothers who offered the use of a forty-acre plot three miles west on KS 18 (just south of the present-day high school). Affectionately referred to as “windy knob”. It had three runways of about 1200 to 1400 feet. This served as Junction City’s airport for about three years.In 1949, a new City Manager, Basgall, saw a need for a city airport. In 1950 pasture land was condemned for airport use only and 75 years ago on October 15, 1950 the airport official opened. They were able to obtain federal and state funding to build the current airport called 3JC (in FAA nomenclature). Bill Price assisted with some ideas for the airport as well as seeding the runways from a homemade spreader in his Piper J-4. As the development of the airport grew, Bill was asked to be the airport manager. He was already working for the US Postal Dept. and was not able to accept employment with another government entity. So, Jim’s wife Mable was asked to be the manager when it opened, which also happened to be her birthday. At the opening, the airport had three grass runways, 2 of 2400 feet and the 18-36 runway was 3600 feet in length. The terminal building was built in 1954 and very similar as seen today. The maintenance building, where the medivac Life Star helicopter is currently, was also completed.Harvey Elton, owner of a paint and glass shop on N. Adams, built the first long hanger that was all open bays at the time. Clarence Day, which owned a cleaning shop on N. Washington built an enclosed building, currently used by Jeremy Gorman. During the 1970’s several other T hangers were built by the city and later sold to individuals.The airport needed a mechanic and flight instructor so Bill who was a master auto mechanic stepped up. Charlie Wood of Clay Center helped him obtain his A&amp;E, while agricultural pilot, CJ Tolliver helped him obtain his Commercial and Instructors certificates.The summer of 1951 brought a big flood, and 3JC was one of only a few airports able to stay open during that period. The army relocated several airplanes from the Fort Riley Flying Club. Numerous local pilots flew mercy missions including the air drop of diabetic and other medicines. They also dropped food items to rural families as well as food and medicines for cattle. It was a very active summer.Around 1956, Bill was getting burned out trying to balance a civilian job and 6-8 hours daily at the airport and weekends fulfilling aircraft owners’ mechanical needs. Jim and Mable turned over airport management to Rodney Ratts. In time, Jim Putney, Sr. who had taken over the agricultural operation, most instruction and mechanical work became the airport manager. Clarence Freeman followed as airport manager and began working the main shop when Putney moved his operation to a different hanger.&nbsp; The airport was renamed Freeman Field as homage to Clarence and efforts at 3JC. Ron Nordt served as airport manager and occupied the “big” hanger on the north side of the parking lot. Marvin Hornbostel, a civilian Ft Riley helicopter mechanic, began doing maintenance at the airport and later became the next airport manager.<figure>

 </figure>At one time 3JC was known as the most convenient airport in the area. Just a long walk and you could be in the heart of the city.&nbsp; Now Freeman Field is in the heart of the city. No longer on the outskirts of town, but land-locked. It is still very active with pilot instruction, aircraft maintenance, construction, and restoration, as well as having Life Star, Civil Air Patrol and Experimental Aircraft Association based there. Tax Sale will be Nov. 8

WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Roger Marshall on Monday praised a major new defense initiative that places Kansas at the forefront of America’s evolving air and base defense strategy. The U.S. Air Force’s Air Combat Command (ACC) has announced that the Kansas Air National Guard’s 184th Wing, headquartered at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, will join the newly established Point Defense Task Force and host a Point Defense Battle Lab.

Additionally, the Smoky Hill Air National Guard Range near Salina will serve as a designated test site for counter-unmanned aerial systems (UAS) experimentation—an increasingly critical capability as the U.S. military works to counter small drone threats to installations and personnel.

The new assignments come in response to ACC’s directive to accelerate the development of base defense technologies, particularly those countering small UAS incursions. The 184th Wing was chosen for its renowned expertise in air battle management, cyber operations, and AI-enabled Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR).

Senator Marshall and Congressman Ron Estes (R-Kansas-4) worked closely with the Department of War, the Department of the Air Force, and Air Combat Command to secure the project for Kansas.

“From defending our borders to protecting our skies, the Kansas National Guard continues to lead,” said Senator Marshall. “I’ve directly engaged with the Department of War to champion our Guard’s unmatched capabilities. The Point Defense Battle Lab represents a major opportunity to bring jobs, advanced technology, and strategic significance to our state. I’m proud to back the Guard’s vision and will keep fighting for strong federal investment to make it a reality.”

Col. Joe Deeds, Commander of the 184th Wing, called the decision a “decisive moment” for both Kansas and national defense.
