This is the first in a series of stories on candidates for the USD 475 Board of Education and the Junction City Commission.

Mark Hatcher is seeking reelection to the USD 475 Board of Education. "It is such an honor and joy to give back to something and invest in something bigger than you, outside of yourself."

There has been discussion about the potential future closure of Milford and Grandview Elementary Schools. Hatcher said, "I'm just committed number one, to look at every conceivable option to keep those schools open for the good of those communities."Hatcher feels the impact of eliminating those schools would be tremendous.

Hatcher wants to restore faith in public education and to help remember why the schools exist, which is to give all children a chance to succeed. He encouraged school board members to work collaboratively with other board members, administration and support staff. Hatcher added he believes he has those good working relationships. 

Hatcher noted a desire to work with fellow board members on the District's strategic plan, raising graduation rates to 95%, decreasing chronic absenteeism, increasing attendance and lowering discipline referrals. He said that they will also continue working on food service and transportation.

Other candidates for the USD 475 Board of Education include Dr. Beth Husdson, Zeek Torres, Kristian James and Thomas Wesoloski.

Junction City Commission candidates are Sam Yoskowitz, Terry Butler, Jim Germann, Joe Markley, Robert Laster and Kelly Niemczyk.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcment are investigating an alleged burglary in Manhattan.

Just after 11:30p.m. Monday, officers filed a report of theft in the 1900 block of Crescent Drive, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. A 34-year-old woman reported a suspect known to her entered her home and took a safe. The estimated total loss associated with this case is $1,350.

Work proceeds on I-70

RILEY COUNTY—One person was injured in a 4-vehicle crash that occurred just before 6p.m. Monday in Riley County.

The Kansas Highway patrol reported a 2003 Honda Accord driven by Elysia P.&nbsp;Bowles, 19, Randolph, was eastbound on U.S. 24 at 59th Avenue. The Honda rear-ended a 2012 Subaru Forester driven by Killian T.&nbsp;Koenig, 16, Manhattan, who was&nbsp;stopped and yielding to turn left. 

After impact the Honda traveled into the westbound lane and struck a westbound 2008 Chrysler Town &amp; Country driven by Harry Everett Whitney III, 70, Manhattan. The impact pushed the van into a westbound 2024 Toyota Rav 4 driven by Connie M. Schmidt, 78, Manhattan, who was stopped at the stop sign.

EMS transported&nbsp;Schmidt to Via Christi. Bowles and Koenig had minor injuries and were not transported for treatment. All four were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Geary County Commisioner Kathy Tremont reported to the governing body Monday night on the recent AUSA meeting in Washington DC.

--The Secretary of the Army discussed the readiness of the Army and the challenges with expenses.

--1,400 additional personnel could come to Fort Riley in the next few years.

--There was information on planning for a new VA clinic expected&nbsp; in April of 2025.

--In other business the commision agreed to accept a proposed interlocal agreement with the North Central Regional Juvenile Detention Center and the other counties served by the facility. It is expected to be signed Nov. 19.

KJCK's Candidate Forum Featuring School Board Candidates airs this week

JUNCTION CITY, Kan.&nbsp;– Geary County Schools USD 475 has announced that Ware Elementary Kindergarten-First Grade Special Education teacher Freda Felton and Fort Riley Middle School sixth grade math teacher Samantha Garner have been named the district’s nominees for the Kansas Teacher of the Year Award Program.

Felton was named the USD 475 Elementary Teacher of the Year, while Garner claimed USD 475 Secondary Teacher of the Year honors. By being named USD 475’s Kansas Teacher of the Year Award winners, Felton and Garner both received a $1,000 check on Monday from Exchange Bank of Junction City. The duo will also be recognized at an upcoming Board of Education meeting. The Kansas Teacher of the Year Award Program, sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education, recognizes, and utilizes representatives of excellent teaching in the elementary and secondary classrooms of the state. Its mission is to build and utilize a network of exemplary teachers who are leaders in the improvement of schools, student performance and the teaching profession.

Felton, who has taught in USD 475 for over 20 years, brings a wealth of knowledge, fun, creativity and expertise to the classroom as she not only taught third grade for a number of years at Ware from 1999 to 2008, but has also served in various roles in Special Education, including being a teacher, building coordinator and coach. She is also a part of the Ware site council, district curriculum task force and professional development council. &nbsp;“It is pretty incredible to receive this award and a little overwhelming because I just come to school every day to do what I love and what I am passionate about. I hope it shows my students that hard work pays off and if you follow your dreams and find what you love, you can accomplish anything,” said Felton.

Garner, who has been in the district for 10 years, is currently in her third year as a sixth-grade math teacher and tennis coach at Fort Riley Middle School. She has spent most of her tenure though as a Special Education teacher at both Fort Riley Middle and Jefferson Elementary.&nbsp;&nbsp;“I did not expect this and was very surprised when everyone walked in today. I’m very grateful and honored. I hope it shows my students that what we are doing is for a reason and the importance of school,” said Garner, who is also a part of Fort Riley Middle School’s advisory council and building leadership team.

The Kansas State Department of Education will appoint regional selection committees responsible for reviewing the nomination forms and selecting six semifinalists, three elementary teachers and three secondary teachers, for recognition at the regional level. Two regional finalists, one elementary teacher and one secondary teacher, will be chosen from among these six teachers.Regional selection committees will be comprised primarily of education administrators and teachers.&nbsp;

Just before 3:30p.m. Friday, officers filed a report of fraud in Randolph. A 66-year-old man reported an unknown individual scammed him out of $25,000 worth of gift cards online.

Officers lso filed a report of fraud on Friday in Manhattan. A 70-year-old woman reported an unknown individual falsely identified themselves as a police officer and instructed her to purchase gift cards for missing jury duty. The estimated total loss associated with this case is $3,000.

The Junction City / Geary County CatBackers Club is holding a watch party for this weekend's K-State vs. KU football -&nbsp; Sunflower Showdown Matchup. The watch party will be held at Tyme Out Steakhouse located a 101 Continental Dr. in Grandview Plaza.&nbsp;

The event is family-friendly and open to the public. No CatBacker membership is required to attend. Doors open at 10:30 a.m., and kickoff for the game will be at 11:00 a.m.&nbsp;

Tyme Out Steakhouse will have their full menu of food and drinks available for purchase on Saturday for the watch party.&nbsp;

The CatBacker Club said there will be door and raffle prizes available.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just after 4p.m. Friday in Riley County.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 2011 GMC Terrain driven by Chassity Rathke, 49, of Council Grove, struck a 2019 Mercedes driven by Tiffany Massenburg, 40, of Manhattan, head-on in a turn lane at&nbsp; 4th Street and Fort Riley Blvd.

RILEY COUNTY —Authorities are investigating the cause of fire at a home in Manhattan.

On Sunday, crews&nbsp;responded to 326 Vattier Street in Manhattan, according to a social media report from the Manhattan Fire Department.

Crews found fire showing from the front of the home.  The building was quickly searched and the fire was extinguished.  No injuries were reported.  The occupants of the home were displaced.&nbsp; The fire department released no additional details early Monday.

Family displaced after house fire in Manhattan

Over the weekend, Hannah Micheel represented the Junction City Lady Jay tennis team at the 6A state tennis tournament held at the CBAC in Olathe. 

On Friday, Micheel started out her day with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Katie Rouse from Dodge City.  She then competed against Lindsay Ruder from Olathe West, but lost 6-4, 6-3 to drop into the backside of the bracket.

Micheel then won her next two matches over Anja Meier from Haysville Campus 8-4 and Ilah Hull from Shawnee Mission East 8-2 to qualify for the Day 2 medal rounds.

On Saturday, Micheel started out losing her first match to Cami Lee from Lawrence Free State.  She then bounced back to defeat Mia Huettenmueller from Olathe East 8-1 and then won vs Prisha Dalal, from Blue Valley North, 8-6 to earn the 9th place medal. 

Overall, Micheel went 5-2 over the two day tournament, helping Junction City finish in 13th place with 6 points.

A Letter of Commendation from the school and National  Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, was presented by the principal to this talented senior.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.  Although they will not continue in the 2026 competition for National Merit Scholarship work, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2026 competition by taking the 2024 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

“Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC.&nbsp;

During his annual report to the Kansas State Board of Education, Kansas Education Commissioner Dr. Randy Watson said preparing Kansas students for their postsecondary pursuits remains of utmost importance for putting students on a path for success after graduating from high school.

“The efforts to increase graduation rates while simultaneously preparing students academically and with hands-on skills will continue to increase students’ chances for postsecondary success and strengthen the state’s workforce,” Watson said.

Watson presented a draft of “Coherence,” the Kansas State Department of Education’s (KSDE) 2024-25 annual report on Tuesday to members of the Kansas State Board of Education during their monthly meeting in Topeka. He said the number of Kansas high school students enrolled in postsecondary courses has continued to grow since 2021, noting that 40,709 students took postsecondary courses during the 2024-25 school year. 

During the same school year, Kansas students earned a total of 366,007 dual credit postsecondary hours, an increase of 33,392 over the previous year. Data for the 2024-25 Advanced Placement (AP) exams are not yet available; however, results from the past three years show a steady and significant increase in the number of exams earning scores of 3, 4, or 5. In 2023-2024, this number increased to 12,240, an increase of nearly 3,000 from the previous year. Based on this upward trend, Kansas fully expects continued growth in AP achievement when the 2025 results are released.

The number of students taking career and technical education (CTE) classes in high school also continues to climb each year.

The Kansas State Board of Education’s strong commitment to improving literacy outcomes continues to drive progress across the state. Thanks to the State Board’s dedicated funding, more than 17,072 educators and administrators have completed or are currently enrolled in LETRS®&nbsp;structured literacy training aligned to the science of reading. This growing participation reflects Kansas’ ongoing effort to ensure every student receives high-quality reading instruction.

Kansas introduced an enhanced state assessment in 2025, and as is standard practice, cut scores were developed accordingly. Kansas educators coming together to set cut scores also afforded an opportunity to address what multiple measures have shown to be a long-standing misalignment between assessment scores and actual student performance. KSDE believes the new cut scores more accurately represent student performance.

The 2024-25 annual report celebrates a major milestone in strengthening Kansas’ educator workforce. Teacher vacancies have dropped by more than 450 statewide, a 21% decrease from spring 2024 to fall 2025. This marks one of the most significant improvements in recent years and reflects ongoing efforts to recruit and retain talented educators across the state. The number of Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Program (RTAP) cohort members has also significantly increased each year since 2023, further addressing the teacher pipeline issues experienced in Kansas and across the U.S.

On homecoming night, in front of a packed crowd at Blue Jay Stadium, the Junction City Blue Jays beat the Washburn Rural Junior Blues 35-20 on Friday night.

The Junction City offense took the field to begin the game on Friday night, looking to build off its 44-point performance in week six at Topeka High. The Blue Jays wasted no time and got into a rhythm right away, running and throwing the ball. JC took five and a half minutes off the clock on the opening drive of the game and scored on a four-yard jet sweep play to senior Lovell Autry. (The Blue Jays actually got in the wildcat formation for this play, with junior linebacker Khaliel Walker taking the snap and giving it off to Autry, who scored when he ran from left to right into the end zone.) JC led 7-0 after the opening drive.

Washburn Rural, like they always do, responded with a nice drive of their own. After picking up a quick first down to begin their drive, running back Jayden Baum broke free from the Blue Jay defense and scored on a 51-yard run to tie the game at 7-7 with 5:08 to go in the first quarter. 7-7 was the score at the end of the first quarter.

On the first play of the second quarter, on third-and-four from the Junior Blue five-yard line, senior quarterback Conrad Gomez hit senior receiver Lovell Autry in the end zone for his second touchdown of the game. JC took a 14-7 lead into halftime.

To begin the second half, Washburn Rural had a backup quarterback in the game after their starter, John Hoytal, was carted off the field on a stretcher late in the first half. Credit to the Junior Blues and backup QB Gavin Vantuyl, who scored on a 31-yard quarterback keeper on a run-pass-option (RPO) play early in the third quarter.

Then, the game changed. For the first time this season, the special teams unit for Junction City put a touchdown on the board.

Tied at 14 with 8:56 to go in the third, Washburn Rural kicked it deep, and Kingston Timms caught the punt at his own five-yard line. Timms returned the ball up the sideline, cut back into the middle of the field, and they did not catch him. A 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown put the Blue Jays back in front by a touchdown, and JC led 21-14 with 8:43 to go in the third quarter.

The Blue Jays tacked on two more touchdowns in the third quarter, one a pass from Gomez to junior Brody Boeckman, and the other a wildcat rushing touchdown by junior Khaliel Walker. JC led 35-14 at the end of the third quarter.

Washburn Rural added a touchdown with four minutes to go in the game, but the extra point was blocked, and JCHS held on to win 35-20.

With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 5-2 on the year and host Emporia next Friday night for senior night. (If Junction City wins, they will win the Centennial League outright.)
