The Junction City Family YMCA will seek to raise funds for a new basketball floor. YMCA Executive Director Amber Stanley tells community supporters in a letter that the YMCA is old but has served the community well the last 55 years. Funds are being raised for necessary repairs&nbsp; and updates. "One of the needed updates is a new basketball floor. We currently have a rubber floor but over the years it has split in multiple places," said Stanley.

The gym is used on a daily basis for activities ranging from aerobics and taekwondo to the heaviest usage, youth basketball. K-6th grade leagues, plus middle and high school kids come in after school to play.

Stanley said she has priced flooring which can be installed over the existing floor. "The price for new ProGym plank materials including installation will be $40,000 - 43,000." Stanley added that she realizes it is a lofty goal but believes keeping the YMCA a safe place where children want to come will benefit the community. She noted that kids can change the world and change can happen. "I want to leave this community bigger and better!"

The YMCA membership base totals more than 1,500, and offers youth sports for Kindergarten through 6th grade. They will be expanding into intramural sports programs at the middle and high school level. They also run a Parents as Teachers program and a YMCA Before &amp; After School program.

A committee has chosen to go with Blue Cross Blue Shield with a GAP plan for the 2024-2025 insurance year. Staff recommends that the Board approve the renewal of the Blue Cross Blue Shield with the added GAP plan for the 2024-2025 plan year as presented.

Agenda is set for Special USD 475 BOE meeting

A 1994 Junction City High School graduate, Bobby Lashley, will be the guest speaker for the USD 475 Celebration of Teaching Banquet on May 6th at the Geary County Convention Center.

Geary Community Schools Foundation Executive Director Margie Pinaire said Franklin Roberto (Bobby) Lashley attended Ware Elementary, Fort Riley Middle School and JCHS. While at Fort Riley Middle School his career seemed to have begun when he was introduced to amateur wrestling as an off-season alternative to football. He continued at JCHS where he was a 4-yr varsity athlete on the wrestling team, a 6A state champion runner-up his junior year and claimed a 6A state championship title his senior year. He competed at the National High School Senior Wrestling Championship, placing eighth in the nation, and was recognized as a High School All-American Athlete. When not wrestling for JCHS, he participated in Freestyle and Greco Roman wrestling where he also excelled.

Lashley continued his education and successful wrestling career at Missouri Valley College where he was a 4-time NAIA All American and a 3-time NAIA National Champion. He was inducted into both the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame and the Missouri Valley Athletic Hall of Fame. He graduated from college in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in human-service agency management and recreation administration. 

Lashley joined the United States Army for 4 years and continued to compete in amateur wrestling. He was a world champion in the International Military Sports Council Armed Forces Senior Freestyle, winning the gold in 2003. 

After the military, Lashley made his professional debut in WWE as Buster Lashley in 2005. He has been a WWE Champion, ECW Champion, TNA Champion, wrestled on the International Circuit in Japan, Italy, Puerto Rico, and other places. He has been in movies, in video games, on TV. He is currently with the WWE. 

Bobby is also, successful in the MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) world. He is the proud father of three children and can often be seen at their events.

Teacher and para scholarships will be presented and USD 475 Retirees will be honored during the banquet.&nbsp; Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the banquet begins at 6 p.m. This event is covered soley by donations to the Geary Community Schools Foundation.&nbsp;

Oentrich was awarded for her work in Comprehensive Agriculture Science, while Leadabrand received recognition because of his exceptional work in Health Science. Only 92 high school seniors from across the state were recognized by KSDE at the Kansas State Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, April 9. Operation Clean Sweep is planned in Junction City

Dorothy Bramlage Public Library officials have been working with architects on a plan to expand the structure at its current location.&nbsp; According to Susan Moyer, Library Director, the plan would increase the current facility size by almost 50% or approximately 7,000 square feet. Expansion would occur on one level.

The next step is to search for money for the project. A total of $1.1 million has been set aside but the estimate on the amount needed is in the $8-10 million range. Private funding including public and private grants will be sought but there is not a timeline.&nbsp; Library officials have been working with BBN Architects of Manhattan. 

Dorothy Bramlage Public Library is located at 230 W. 7th Street.

Earlier plans included building a new library at a location on the site of the former Junction City High School but that has changed. There was an effort to obtain a federal DCIP grant for that project but that grant was not received

TOPEKA, KAN. – A man pleaded guilty to taking part in a $1 million fraudulent customer refund scheme involving more than a dozen defendants, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney's office for the District of Kansas.

According to court documents, Mercele Brooks, 28, of Harker Heights, Texas, pleaded guilty to one count of accessory after the fact to laundering monetary instruments.

Kanesha Mercer, Darius Polite, Rudy Hunt, and Veronica Kilman were employees at Advanced Call Center Technologies ("ACCT") in Junction City, Kansas. Their duties included processing customer refunds for AT&amp;T Digital Life home security systems. Between December 2016 and August 2018, they processed fraudulent refund claims totaling approximately $1 million. They deposited the funds into the bank accounts of co-conspirators who would return a portion of the money to the employees. Accounts owned or controlled by Brooks received $100,317 in wire fraud proceeds.

“This type of fraud, put simply is greed driven. These crimes are not victimless, as ultimately costs are passed on to the consumer. This investigation determined that multiple bad actors took part in this scheme, and this plea demonstrates that these individuals are being held accountable for their actions,” said Stephen A. Cyrus, FBI Kansas City Special Agent in Charge.

Kanesha Mercer, 35, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and was sentenced to 14 months in prison.

Kory Epps Jr., 25, pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and was sentenced to 10 months in prison.

Caylon McCormick pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and was sentenced to six months in prison.

Darius Polite, 30, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and is awaiting sentencing.

Anthony Charite, 33, Kiondra Armstrong, 30, Fontelle Jolly, 26, Veronica Kilman, 33, Rudy Hunt, 32, and Sharika Pope, 42, pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud. Erica Jackson, 41, and Shunqureau Gilbert, 30, pleaded guilty to laundering of monetary instruments.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating the case. and Assistant U.S. Attorney Skip Jacobs is prosecuting the case.

Join Milford State Park staff at the south boat ramp day use area near splash pad for an Earth Day park clean-up and tree planting on Saturday, April 20th. Bring your work gloves and water. Other supplies or tools will be provided.

According to a social media post from the state park the clean-up will begin at 10 a.m. on the 20th.

Milford State Park will be the location for a spring spruce up

JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s guest speaker at their April 10 meeting in Jim Clark’s Chevrolet showroom was Vaughn de Guzman. He is the Eighth Judicial District’s Intensive Supervision Officer. The Eighth Judicial District consists of Geary, Dickinson, Marion, and Morris Counties.

Vaughn has been a resident of Junction City since 1986 and is a graduate of Junction City High School. He currently works with juveniles who are first time offenders. These are young people “who make a mistake, are willing to do what they need to do (to make restitution or correct their behavior) and change their behavior, they are not prosecuted and there is no record of the offense” , he said.

Vaughn’s first case in Geary County was with a youth who stole hygiene products from a local store. When working with the youth, Vaughn realized that to change behaviors, it would take a holistic approach. He needed to try to understand the WHY or the reason for the theft. This has been a part of his strategies in working with young people. Vaughn sees his role as one who helps youth learn skills to be better people and be positive contributors to our society and less on the punitive aspects in dealing with young people.

“We use evidence-based practices in working with our clients”. These are practices that use the current research and best data to guide decisions so preferred outcomes are achieved.

Vaughn told the Optimist Club members that sometimes people from other communities talk negatively about our community – that we teach youth to lie, cheat, steal, fight and drink. Vaugh’s response to that negativity is “Yes! We teach them to lie on their back and dream their future as they would like it to be; cheat death; steal someone’s heart and fall in love; fight for those who can’t and drink from the cup of truth”.

Next week’s guest speakers will be Windy Hancock and Jasmine Metcalf, who work with the USD 475 McKinney/Vento Homeless Program.

He is the Eighth Judicial District’s Intensive Supervision Officer. The Eighth Judicial District consists of Geary, Dickinson, Marion, and Morris Counties.Vaughn has been a resident of Junction City since 1986 and is a graduate of Junction City High School. He currently works with juveniles who are first time offenders. These are young people “who make a mistake, are willing to do what they need to do (to make restitution or correct their behavior) and change their behavior, they are not prosecuted and there is no record of the offense” , he said.Vaughn’s first case in Geary County was with a youth who stole hygiene products from a local store. When working with the youth, Vaughn realized that to change behaviors, it would take a holistic approach. He needed to try to understand the WHY or the reason for the theft. This has been a part of his strategies in working with young people. Vaughn sees his role as one who helps youth learn skills to be better people and be positive contributors to our society and less on the punitive aspects in dealing with young people.“We use evidence-based practices in working with our clients”. These are practices that use the current research and best data to guide decisions so preferred outcomes are achieved.Vaughn told the Optimist Club members that sometimes people from other communities talk negatively about our community – that we teach youth to lie, cheat, steal, fight and drink. Vaugh’s response to that negativity is “Yes! We teach them to lie on their back and dream their future as they would like it to be; cheat death; steal someone’s heart and fall in love; fight for those who can’t and drink from the cup of truth”.Next week’s guest speakers will be Windy Hancock and Jasmine Metcalf, who work with the USD 475 McKinney/Vento Homeless Program.

According to Grandview Plaza Fire Chief Jeremy Bramwell the cause of the blaze was accidental. The damage estimate is s till undetermined. The property was owned by Ricky Parker.

According to Geary County Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges the blaze was brought under control. During the fire the wind blew smoke across Interstate 70.

Fire units work in Grandview Plaza

United Way and LHEAT will work to Stuff the Food Pantry. They will be collecting food and baby items with donations shared with the Geary County Food Pantry, JC Pregnancy Center, Konza Cupboard and other food pantries. Each month&nbsp; the food pantries provide food for more than 2,000 people.

Items are also being collected for the JC Pregnancy Center. Often when a new or expecting parent comes to the center it is to get help with items for their little one such as diapers and baby towels.

Junction City High School sophomore Jamarcus Tyson was named one of six new members to the Kansas State High School Activities Association Student Advisory Team on Wednesday. Tyson, who was the KSHSAA Class 6A selection, was joined by Jadyn Bollin (Lansing High School), Trista Welty (Clearwater High School), Charlie Budke (Beloit High School), Shaliah Ensley (Marion High School) and Lee Holopirek (Canton Galva High School).

Tyson’s service to his fellow students will begin in August of 2024. He will work together with Dodge City High School student Tatum Steiner to best represent Class 6A.&nbsp; The six students, one from each of the six classifications of member schools, have been selected for a term of two years. There are six carryover seniors from last year’s team as well that will continue to serve on the 2024-25 Student Advisory Team.

There will be a rotation of six new members on the team each year. The role of the team will be to receive information and to provide input to the Executive Board, Board of Directors, and Association staff regarding Kansas State High School Activities Association issues. The SAT will also serve as a sounding board on proposals affecting students.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Geary County Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges has confirmed that a barbecue grill was the cause of a fire that destroyed a house in the 13000 block of Lower McDowell Creek Road and three nearby vehicles Monday evening. The residents, Mike and Teresa Tulley,&nbsp; got out. They did have insurance coverage on the property.

Berges said the house was totally engulfed when firefighters arrived on the scene.

According to Black History Trail President Jim Sands on Friday, April 26th there will be “An Evening with Kevin Willmott” at the&nbsp; Larry Dixon Center, 920 W 6th St. in Junction City.&nbsp; Doors open at 6 p.m. There will be a reception at 7 p.m. followed by a&nbsp; screening of “The 24th,” a Kevin Willmott film about the Buffalo Soldiers’ historic 24th Infantry Regiment. A discussion led by Kevin Willmott will follow..

On Saturday, April 27, a “Dedication and Dinner” is planned at the Buffalo Soldier Memorial Park, 18th &amp; Adams in Junction City at 11:00 a.m. The dedication of three Buffalo Soldier sites will be added to the Black History Trail, with Phil Dixon presenting “Buffalo Soldier Stories”.&nbsp; A luncheon will follow Immediately at VFW Post #8773, 1215 S. RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for an alleged drug related death.

Just before 9:30p.m. Tuesday, police arrested Robert Boyles, Jr., 35, of Topeka, Kansas, was arrested in the 1000 block of South Seth Child Road, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department.

Boyles was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for distribution of a controlled substance causing death, distribution of opiate/opium/narcotic/stimulant/heroin dosage &lt; 10 units, and use of a communication facility in the commission of a felony drug violation.

The arrest stems from an incident that occurred in August of 2021 wherein law enforcement officers investigated the overdose death of a 36-year-old woman. An affidavit in the investigation indicates a mixture of drugs including fentanyl contributed to her death, according to the RCPD.

&nbsp;Any individuals possessing pertinent information in the case are urged to come forward and assist law enforcement authorities.&nbsp;Boyles has previous convictions for ID theft, interference with law enforcement and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections. He has been out of prison since December of 2022.

RCPD: Kan. felon arrested for woman's fentanyl death

Junction City Public Works repaired a water main near 19th and Adams on the north side of town Wednesday. A check with Public Works reveals a contractor bored through a line.

Water service was restored to that area of town by 11 a.m.

On Tuesday at 2:3 p.m. Deputies responded to a two vehicle injury accident at mile marker 302 west bound I-70. The Sheriff's Department said that Steven J. Barnes of Manhattan was riding his 2015 Yamaha YZFR3 when he hit the rear end of a 2003 Buick Rendezvous driven by&nbsp; Thomas E. Shull of Grandview Plaza.

Barnes was transported to Stormont Vale. The Yamaha was removed from the scene by private tow and the Buick by the owner.

RILEY COUNTY - The Burklund/Axelton Fire in portions of Riley and Pottawatomie Counties is considered to be 90% contained, according to a media release.

Pottawatomie County has released all mutual aid crews, while local volunteers continue to monitor the burned area for hotspots and areas of concern.

As for Riley County, crews from not only Riley County but also Pottawatomie County,&nbsp;Kansas Forest Service, Kansas City Kansas Wildland Task Force, Pittsburg, and Garden City, remain on scene monitoring fire conditions.

No aerial support was utilized on Tuesday.

“At this point, personnel and volunteers are mostly keeping an eye on things and addressing hot spots. We’re not worried about the fire advancing today, but we want to make sure nothing unexpected happens,” explained Doug Russell, Deputy Chief of Operations for Riley County Fire District #1.&nbsp;

Smoke and even flames in the burned areas can be expected for at least the next few days.

“Logs and brush piles in the burned areas will continue to smolder for a while,” said Russel Stukey, Fire Chief for Riley County Fire District #1. “Seeing smoke is not a cause for alarm at this time. However, if you believe you see fire that is escaping the blackened perimeter of a burned area, please call 911 right away.”&nbsp;

Pottawatomie County Fire Supervisor Jared Barnes reminds residents to check all past burns for anything that could escape and reignite the fire. Strong winds are predicted for late Wednesday into Thursday.

All roads previously closed in Riley County due to the Burklund/Axelton fire have since been reopened and all residents have been allowed to return home.

One home was lost in Riley County on Friday, and a few structures sustained fire damage over the weekend. No additional structures have been damaged in Riley County, and no structures in Pottawatomie County were lost or damaged as a result of this fire. No loss of livestock or injuries have been reported in either county.

“We appreciate all the work all the crews and volunteers have put in over the last several days. Conditions were difficult, but we never had a shortage of firefighters to do the work. It’s truly heartwarming to see how the community turns out to support each other during difficult times. Without all the volunteers in both counties, this disaster would have been a lot worse,” said Doug Russel.&nbsp;

“I also want to acknowledge the important sacrifice that firefighter families make when a firefighter is working to protect their neighbors and communities”, stated Jared Barnes. “Thank you for your support, encouragement, and understanding as they spend time away from loved ones.”

Thousands of acres have been burned as a result of this fire which started on Friday, April 5th in Pottawatomie County.

The official total number of acres burned should be released in the next few weeks.

Chamber of Commerce schedules ribbon cutting 

Beginning Monday, April 15, the Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin work on the first of two phases of a resurfacing project on K-57 and U.S. 77 in Geary County.

During the first phase, the contractor will patch concrete on the four-lane section of K-57, just north of 18th street in Junction City. Work during this phase of construction is scheduled for completion in early May.

KDOT said that during the second phase of construction, which is scheduled to begin immediately after the first phase, K-57 and U.S. 77 will be resurfaced in the following locations: (See attached map.)

• K-57: From just north of the 18th Street/K-57 junction to the south U.S. 77/K-57 junction in Junction City.

• U.S. 77: The half-mile stretch spanning either side of the U.S. 77/Rucker Road intersection.

• U.S. 77: Continuing north 700 feet from the U.S. 77/Lacy Drive junction.

At the location of construction, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Drivers should expect minimal delays.

Shilling Construction Co., of Manhattan is the prime contractor and has scheduled all work for this $2.06 million project to be completed by June, weather permitting.
