RILEY COUNTY - On Monday morning, Incident Commanders from both Pottawatomie and Riley Counties went on an aerial tour of the Burklund/Axelton fire by helicopter.

The fire is estimated to be at 80% containment, with no homes or structures being threatened as of 3:30 pm on Monday, April 8th.

“Thankfully, the forward progression of the fire has stopped. We’ll continue to see smoke from some interior areas that are still burning, but we’re happy to announce the fire is mostly under control at this time,” said Bill Waln, State Fire Management Officer with the Kansas Forest Service.

The name of the fire was updated to signify the unified response between both Pottawatomie and Riley County Fire fighters.

The fire was previous called a different name in each county, moving forward this fire will be referred to as the Burklund/Axelton fire with statistics and information being released as a coordinated effort between the two counties.

Emergency responders continue to monitor the fire area and are encouraging residents to remain aware, as the fire situation could change at a moments notice.

Pottawatomie County Fire Supervisor Jared Barnes asked that residents continue to check past burns to make sure they are completely out and watch the weather for the next several days. “The weather forecast calls for calm winds through Wednesday evening, but north winds are expected to pick up again Thursday. We’re out of the emergency phase, but not completely out of danger, yet,” cautioned Doug Russell, Deputy Fire Chief for Riley County Fire District #1.

 Burkland/Axelton fire burns more than 3K acres

Fire destroyed a house in the 13000 block of Lower McDowell Creek Road and three nearby vehicles Monday evening. The man and woman who lived at the home and one dog got out. One animal perished.

Geary County Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges said the house was totally engulfed when firefighters arrived on the scene. The names of the residents have not been released pending completion of the investigation into the cause of the blaze. There will be a representative from the State Fire Marshal's Office called in to assist with the investigation on Tuesday. A damage estimate is not yet available.

Geary County sent 19 firefighters to battle the blaze, Grandview Plaza sent a water tanker, Riley County provided help with four vehicles to support water needs and J6 Ranch also provided water support. The Red Cross was contacted to provide support to the family.

Fire destroys a rural house and vehicles

The 2024 Geary County Free Fair will be held July 21-25. The information was contained in a report to the county commission by Fair Board President Amy Blockowsky and county agricultural extension agent Kyler Langvardt.

This will be the 98th year for the fair. It is open to both 4-H and open class participants.

The fair will open with&nbsp; the horse show and tractor pedal pull Sunday July 21. It will be preceded by the Junction City Rodeo July 19-20.

In 2023 the fair 4-H livestock and project auction raised more than $50,000 for county youth. Another highlight during the past year was the replacement of the beef barn roof.

Dates are set for the 2024 Geary County Free Fair

Junction City manager Allen Dinkel issued a terse press release on Monday. 

"The City of Junction City announces that John Lamb is no longer serving as Chief of Police. The Junction City Police Department is fully functional to serve the members of this community while we make plans to fill the position."

Lamb served as Junction City police chief for more than four years.

Change at the JCPD

Robert ( Bobby ) Miller has filed for election to the 3rd District seat on the Geary County Commission. He filed by petition in the county clerk's office Monday morning.&nbsp;

Miller is a rancher and farmer, and a retired county appraiser. He tells JC Post that he served as county appraiser in Wabaunsee County for 11 years and worked on the county appraisal staff for 11 years in Pottawatomie County before that.

Miller resides about five miles southeast of Junction City.&nbsp;

Keith Ascher, who has not yet filed for reelection, has been serving as the Third District county commissioner.&nbsp;

The director of the Military Affairs Council for the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce, Isreal Waddell is resigning. Geary County Commissioner Keith Ascher, who represents the County on the MAC Board, noted that Waddell will be leaving June 1st. Command Sgt. Major Robert Wilson will serve in the post on an interim basis beginning in May. He retires from the Army later this year.

A check with the Chamber of Commerce confirmed Waddell will resign. He will be accompanying his wife, who is active duty military and has received orders to transfer to another post.

MAC Director submits his resignation

Junction City Commissioner Richard Pinaire believes the suggested Taylor Road Interchange project off of I-70 on the southwest edge of the city should go to a vote of the public. Put it on the ballot. Commissioner Al Gordon said he likes the idea and would not be opposed to that idea.

The commissioners expressed their views during a discussion on the project last week. The estimated cost of the Interchange and related nearby street upgrades would be approximately $41 million with local match providing about $15 million and KDOT the remainder.

"If city staff wants to put together a plan with the EDC and county that's all well and good, " said Pinaire. But he added that it should be put on the ballot and then the forces of each side, in favor and against, can debate it.

The consensus of the overall city commission was for staff to prepare more of a plan, a breakdown, including how the local match would be paid for the project and potential use.

During earlier discussion City Manager Allen Dinkel noted that there will have to be discussion on how the City moves ahead with KDOT. The Kansas Department of Transportation doesn't want to build an interchange without local infrastructure. But the City doesn't want to build the infrastructure ( roads - streets ) without an interchange. He also noted the difficulty of trying to market anything out there right now. 

Dinkel pointed to the challenge of getting a company excited when perhaps in five years you&nbsp;might have an interchange. Business plans could change during that time. Dinkel added that there are three parts to the issue and all three would have to happen.

One part of the project, if it's undertaken,&nbsp; is that it could result in connecting the interchange and road improvements as a route from I-70 to near Junction City High School.&nbsp;

Commissioners talk about the Taylor Road Interchange project

High winds helped lead to multiple grass fires for the Geary County fire Department Saturday and Sunday. There were not any injuries reported.

According to Geary County Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges at 3:18 p.m. Sunday firefighters were sent to an area near Old Highway 40 and Britt Road west of Junction City. A fire that had rekindled from an earlier blaze and involved the burning of grass and trees. Units from Junction City Fire Department, Abilene, Herington, Grandview Plaza and Enterprise helped put out that fire. That blaze had rekindled from a Saturday burn which was actually a rekindle of the controlled burn of a wood pile from one month ago.

Sunday at 3:18 p.m. there was a fire reported near U.S. 77 and K-57 near an Evergy transmission line involving a power pole and grass fire that jumped across a road and burned some cedar trees.

On Saturday there was a grass fire in the Schmedemann Road and Lower McDowell Creek Road area where a grass fire rekindled. A house also caught fire. Berges estimated damage at $10,000 to the house where Dave Sampson lived. There were not any injuries.

At 2:45 p.m. Sunday Geary County also sent two units to stand by in Ogden for Riley County Fire District one. There was a major grass fire occurring in northern Riley County.

Geary County rural firefighters respond to multiple calls

The other day a local resident came by the office to visit me. This gentleman was a native of the area when he was younger, but recently moved to Junction City to enjoy his retirement. I know when he shows up he has many questions, but he comes with the attitude to understand more as he truly wants to understand the operation of the City. I enjoy his questions and discussions as he truly wants to know more, and he tries to bring his point of view for us to consider.

At the last City Commission meeting a bid of $1,582,282.25 for the 2024 Street Maintenance project was approved. For the most part this is a mill and overlay but will include other repair to curb, handicapped curb cuts, etc. This is the similar amount of funds that have been allocated each year for the last few years, but that is about ½ million dollars more than it used to be and 10 years ago only about 500K was spent per year.

Each year, the project varies as far as which street are selected. Last year, it was primarily residential as the entire Indian Hills area was addressed, however this year the project will be on 6th Street from Washington street to Eisenhower Street and then Clay Street from 6th Street to 14th Street. Naturally the cost for 6th Street is higher per block as these are wide 4-lane streets and less total blocks are covered even though the number of square yards is nearly the same.

So, as the resident asked me on Friday, how are the street picked each year? No there is not a map at the City Office where we throw darts to determine which areas to choose nor is there just an arbitrary selection. Public works with our consulting engineer and ranks the street conditions. Yes, they try to group blocks together as they don’t want to do a block here and a block there as that increases the costs. This gentleman wondered if there were other streets that could have been included this year instead. I don’t necessarily disagree that there is other streets, but as I told him, has the City ever did mill and overlay or another improvement where it wasn’t needed? Yes more needs to be done, that would increase costs and then we would have a debate about taxes.

To remind everyone, the roundabout on South Washington Street will be replaced this year. This project is being done by the same contractor that was chosen by KDOT for the interstate work. KDOT is coordinating the project and has control of the time table.

Work is being done on Soth Spring Valley Road on an area near the Geary County Fairgrounds. This project was bid, and a contract was awarded to a local contractor and is on the “radar”. One delay is that one adjacent property owner has been difficult for Public Works to deal with to gain a temporary easement. City staff will continue to focus on that. Also, KDOT will be bidding work to install a sidewalk on the west side of the street from Liberty Hall Road to Valley Drive. Again, there is a battle to obtain a temporary easement.

I see that some ask why they are charged a Storm Water fee each month. I don’t know what everyone was told when the storm water fee was first put in place, but these funds are used to address issues involving drainage and storm water. A large project was done on Price’s Ravine last year on North Jackson Street as erosion was a real issue. Another upcoming project will be Rimrock Dam at Homer’s Pond. This dam was named as a “High Risk Dam” by the Kansas Department of Agriculture a number of years ago. We have argued that this is not a “Risk”, but we never have won that battle and a project costing more than $700,000 will be needed. Again, I don’t see the need, but we don’t have the power to change that.

I enjoy visiting with those who want to know about City projects. They don’t argue or complain, but they simply want to understand and learn more. And yes, we do get another option to consider. The list of projects seems to never end, but simply the City continues to address and move ahead. Maybe everyone does not agree, but attempts continue to make progress.

Oh yes, we are all waiting when the Bridge on East 6th Street will be done. This is not a City project but affects all of us. The City will work with KDOT to get funding to repair streets that have been used as this project was underway. Hopefully that leads to more work being done.

Junction City Arts Council has announced the return of the ARTISTS AT LARGE Central Kansas exhibit at the new Rago gallery in the C.L. Hoover Opera House..

This showcase features works by artists from the Great Bend area, including Von Pound, Rebecca Wasson, and Barbara Watson. The display highlights nine paintings in the new Rago Gallery and ten more in the Munson Educational Building.

The ARTISTS AT LARGE group meets monthly to paint together. Experienced members offer guidance and encouragement to new painters.

Visitors can see this display until the end of June.

NORTON COUNTY —A Washington County Kansas man was injured in an accident just before 12:30a.m. Sunday in northwest Kansas.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Chevy Equinox driven by Alex J. Conn, 27, Greanleaf, was northbound on 1st Avenue at Main Street in Norton.

The SUV sideswiped a parked 2005 Peterbilt semi,&nbsp;continued northbound, crossing West Main Street, crossed the center line and struck a utility pole on the West side of 1st Avenue.

EMS transported Conn to the Norton County Hospital. He was also not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Wild Unity is a nonprofit organization offering Yoga to residents of Junction City and other cities ranging from Salina to Topeka. Every Saturday from 9 - 10 a.m. participants can meet at 1440 Pearl Drive at Valley View Estates.

&nbsp;Charmion Harris founded Wild Unity following the COVID 19 pandemic after closing an earlier YOGA studio that was doing well until the pandemic hit. Yoga works to balance the mind, body and soul. She noted that it needs to be accessible to people from all backgrounds.

So far about 200 people have participated in the program with an average of about 10 attending the weekly classes.

There have been opportunities for sound therapy through the program to help address healing of&nbsp; the body, brain and the electromagnetic field around the body when it sustains kinks.

Laurie McCallister is a board member for Wild Unity. She noted that there are focus areas for classes including calm, wild, strong and well. Those four types of classes are not normally offered in a regular studio class.

McCallister said that there is a connection to your inner self, other sense of calmness and a sense of peace.

You can register online at www.wildunityks.org or attend the Saturday classes. They are also partnering with Junction City Parks and Recreation to offer the classes on Saturdays across the city from June 1 - Aug. 17.

The Saturday classes this summer will begin June 1 and June 8 in Heritage Park. In the event of inclement&nbsp; weather they will be held indoors at 1440 Pearl Drive.

Friday there was a 30 foot cross lifted and placed into a 5 foot limestone pedestal on the east side of St Paul Cemetery in southeast Geary County. According to LaDonna Junghans, the location was chosen because the Easter sunrise service is held on the east side of the church.&nbsp; Thus, it will always be visible for the early morning service and funerals.&nbsp;

Cross is lifted near St. Paul Lutheran Church

Junction City firefighters worked a warehouse fire involving two sheds at 948&nbsp; Grant Ave. Friday. There were no injuries. According to Fire Chief Jason Lankas a state fire marshal office representative was called in to help with the case but the cause is undetermined right now. Lankas indicated that the investigation would probably continue Monday.

A specific damage estimate was not available.&nbsp;Multiple explosions due to LP gas containers and power to some of Junction City was lost for a time due to a transmission line running through the scene.

GEARY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating the death of a man found at a rest stop in Geary County have identified James J. Cramer of St. Louis, Missouri.

Just before 6:30 a.m. Thursday, Geary County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to the I-70 eastbound rest stop just before&nbsp;Moritz Road reference to a check welfare, according to a media release.

Deputies located Cramer in the driver’s seat of a gold van. The sheriff's office did not release his age or cause of death.

This case is still under investigation and the Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone that may have information on this case to call 785-238-2261.

The Geary County Sheriff’s Office&nbsp; has signed a memorandum of understanding with USD 475 to provide additional School Resource Officer assistance for the remainder of the school year.

The Sheriff’s Office has been in communication with USD 475, and the Junction City Police Department, in coordinating this joint effort to provide services.

The Sheriff’s Office will be providing one full time Deputy to the special assignment of School Resource Officer. The Department will have two additional Deputies trained to fill in any vacancies of the primary Deputy, due to any absence that may arise.

“The Sheriff’s Office is excited to be able to provide additional assistance to USD 475 and the Junction City Police Department and look forward to further collaborations with both entities,” Sheriff Eric Coffman said.

Shelter Program. The awarded funding total is $10,339, to supplement
emergency food and shelter programs in the county. The selection was
made by a National Board that is chaired by the U. S. Department of
Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists
of representatives from American Red Cross; Catholic Charities, USA;
National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA; The Jewish
Federations of North America, The Salvation Army; and, United Way
Worldwide. The National Board was charged to distribute funds
appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and
shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.


A
Local Board made up of a Geary County Commissioner, representatives
from American Red Cross, Catholic Charities, Salvation Army, United
Way, Fresh Start Shelter, the Geary County Food Pantry, and others
will determine how the funds awarded to Geary County are to be
distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by
local service agencies in the area. The Local Board is responsible
for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional
funds made available under this phase of the program.


Under
the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen
to receive funds must: 1) be private voluntary non-profits or units
of government, 2) be eligible to receive Federal funds, 3) have an
accounting system, 4) practice nondiscrimination, 5) have
demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter
programs, and 6) if they are a private voluntary organization, have a
voluntary board. Qualifying agencies are urged to apply.


Geary
County has distributed Emergency Food and Shelter funds previously
with the Food Pantry, homeless shelter, The Salvation Army, and
others. These agencies were responsible for providing food, utility
assistance, and/or lodging.


Public

A 32-year-old man was reported someone used his social security number for tax purposes which resulted in a fraudulent deficit to the State of Kansas of $8,468.96 in taxes.&nbsp;

RCPD: Man reports $8,468 loss in Kansas tax fraud case

Like February, March is starting to repeat the pattern of 2023 which was above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation. January through March normally shows a nice increase in precipitation but again this year we are seeing each month with lower precipitation than the previous month. A trend we hope doesn’t continue on into April.

The average daily high for March was 60 degrees, 3.9 degrees above normal. The average overnight low for the month was 38.2, 5.4 degrees above normal. This resulted in a monthly mean temperature of 49.1, 4.7 degrees above normal. This moves March 2024 into a tie with March 2021 for the sixth warmest March on record. Seven of the ten warmest March’s on record have occurred since 2000. 

The warmest March on record was in 2012 with a monthly mean temperature of 57.5. The coldest March on record was 1960 with a monthly mean temperature of 31.3 degrees. The warmest temperature for the month was 76 on March 31st. The coldest temperature was 20 degrees on the 27th of March. There were no temperature records set for the month.&nbsp;

There were few rainfall events during March, and the recorded precipitation was minimal in each event. Average March precipitation is 2.0 inches. The area received 0.70 inches or 35% of normal. Year to date we have received 3.34 inches. Normal through the end of march is 3.83 inches. After a very wet January, February and March have failed to keep up with average. 

The wettest March on record was in 1974 when an amazing 8.04 inches of precipitation was recorded. The driest March on record was in 1974 when there was no measurable precipitation. March normally sees about 3 inches of snow. This year we saw less than a half inch of snow with one late season snowfall. Season to date (starting in October) we have had 17.5 inches of snow, just about average through the end of March and close to our annual seasonal average of 18 inches.

Historically, April brings us some very spring like temperatures and an increase in rain with those legendary “April showers”. Long term average April rainfall is 3.15 inches. Daily highs start the month at 63 and by the end of the month are up to 68 degrees. Overnight lows on April 1st are 38 and by the 30th have risen to 47 degrees. While April snowfall is not out of the questions, the long term average is a mere 0.7 inches of snow for the month!

This resulted in a monthly mean temperature of 49.1, 4.7 degrees above normal. This moves March 2024 into a tie with March 2021 for the sixth warmest March on record. Seven of the ten warmest March’s on record have occurred since 2000. The warmest March on record was in 2012 with a monthly mean temperature of 57.5. The coldest March on record was 1960 with a monthly mean temperature of 31.3 degrees. The warmest temperature for the month was 76 on March 31st. The coldest temperature was 20 degrees on the 27th of March. There were no temperature records set for the month.&nbsp;There were few rainfall events during March, and the recorded precipitation was minimal in each event. Average March precipitation is 2.0 inches. The area received 0.70 inches or 35% of normal. Year to date we have received 3.34 inches. Normal through the end of march is 3.83 inches. After a very wet January, February and March have failed to keep up with average. The wettest March on record was in 1974 when an amazing 8.04 inches of precipitation was recorded. The driest March on record was in 1974 when there was no measurable precipitation. March normally sees about 3 inches of snow. This year we saw less than a half inch of snow with one late season snowfall. Season to date (starting in October) we have had 17.5 inches of snow, just about average through the end of March and close to our annual seasonal average of 18 inches.Historically, April brings us some very spring like temperatures and an increase in rain with those legendary “April showers”. Long term average April rainfall is 3.15 inches. Daily highs start the month at 63 and by the end of the month are up to 68 degrees. Overnight lows on April 1st are 38 and by the 30th have risen to 47 degrees. While April snowfall is not out of the questions, the long term average is a mere 0.7 inches of snow for the month!

One westbound lane of I-70 has opened following a tractor trailer fire.. Authorities expect it will remain that way for some time.

No injuries were reported and the driver exited the truck safely. The truck contents were a soft drink product.

The Geary County Sheriff's Department tells JC Post that I-70 Westbound past the 307 off-ramp is temporarily closed due to a tractor trailer fire. JC Post will update the story as information becomes available.

&nbsp; USD 475 announced via social media that the Geary Community Schools Foundation&nbsp;will host its annual USD 475 Art Show and Silent Auction on Friday from 5-7 p.m., as well as Saturday, April 6 from 1-4 p.m., inside Junction City High School.
