The Kansas Highway Patrol reported Geary County Deputies were in pursuit of a 2020 Kia Forte driven&nbsp; by&nbsp; Mose E Allen, 58 Manhattan, eastbound on Kansas 18&nbsp; five miles southwest of Manhattan.

Allen lost control of the car. It struck both the right side and the left side of the bridge wall and came to a rest in the center median.

EMS transported&nbsp;Allen to&nbsp;Stormont Vail-Flint Hills. He was also not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.&nbsp; Authorities have not released what prompted the chase.

Manhattan man hospitalized after crash during chase

Friday night was homecoming at Junction City High School, so it was a packed house inside Blue Jay Event Center for both boys and girls games.

It was another thrilling rivalry game between the boys teams of Junction City and Manhattan High School.

A back and forth game all the way to the end went the way of the Blue Jays, as Junction City held off Manhattan 56-53.

After being tied at the end of the first quarter, the Blue Jays led the Indians by one point at halftime and at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter saw Manhattan take a 49-47 lead with just over two minutes to play, but a clutch three pointer and some late free throws by Jackson Austin propelled the Blue Jays to victory. 

Junction City was led in scoring by junior Larkin Turner with 22 points. Sophomore Lovell Autry added 14 points.

For the Indians, senior Asher Newcomer led the team with 18 points, Jason Kim finished the night with 14 points. Kim had a three-point shot at the buzzer to try and force overtime, but the shot missed. With the win Junction City improves to 15-2, while Manhattan falls to 10-7.

The Manhattan Lady Indians jumped out to a quick 21 point lead and then coasted to a big 61-18 win over the Junction City Lady Jays on Friday night.

Manhattan had several contributors on the night, as 10 different players scored at least a point. 

For the Lady Jays, senior Sara Rexrode once again led the team in scoring with seven points.

Manhattan improves to 10-7 on the season, and Junction City falls to 1-16.&nbsp;

Up next for Manhattan is a home matchup against Emporia on Tuesday. As for Junction City, it is another home game as the Blue Jays host Topeka Hayden on Tuesday night.&nbsp;

Geary USD 475 hopes to break ground on an Early Childhood Center early next fall. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Reginald Eggleston recently released that information and said officials are in the early stages of looking at the blueprints or schematics.&nbsp;

"We're looking at a facility with 24 classrooms and all of the supporting elements that Pre-K needs, said Eggleston. "It's going to be around the 26 school year when we look at moving into that facility. "The Superintendent noted that he will start having conversations with the school board about any additional amenities that they may want to add to the facility.

The Center will serve three and four year old students. It will be built at 820 North Eisenhower Drive.

The annual severe weather and storm spotter training meeting sponsored by Geary County Emergency Management is scheduled on Wednesday, March 6th. It will begin at 7 p.m. at the 4-H / Senior Center.

There will not be any cost to attend and registration will not be needed. The meeting will be open to the public.

Junction City High School will be one of the host sites for 6A girls' regional wrestling on Saturday.

On February 4th,at approximately 1:00 p.m. Deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on I-70 in Geary County and located approximately 7000 counterfeit oxycodone (M30) pills containing fentanyl destined to be distributed in Geary County. 

 The discovery of the pills led to several search warrants and several arrests, more arrest and charges are currently pending.

The Shoe drive, called "Soles4Souls," will be run by JCHS Kay Club students and new or gently used shoes of all types and sizes will be accepted.&nbsp;

Students will begin collecting shoes at 5:45 p.m. in the Blue Jay Event Center commons area.&nbsp;

The "Soles4Souls" shoe drive turns shoes into opportunities for education and employment all over the nation so everyone can have a hopeful tomorrow.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 2015 gray Toyota Corolla driven by Simran Joshi, 26, of Manhattan struck a pedestrian identified as Jayce Kohls, 21, of Manhattan&nbsp;near the intersection of Research Park Dr. and N. Manhattan Ave. in Manhattan

EMS transported Kolhs to Via Christi for treatment of his injuries. Police issued Joshi a citation for failure to yield the right of way.

Quilt of Valor presented at MAC meeting

A 5th Judicial District Judge, W. Lee Fowler, has granted a request by Geary County Commissioners for a temporary injunction in an EMS services case.

Junction City will be prevented from suspending EMS Services outside city limits, the County must keep paying for the service, and Judge W. Lee Fowler of the 5th Judicial District is allowing the two entities to continue negotiations or determine a new contract. The information was provided by City Attorney Britain Stites and Geary County Commission Chair Trish Giordano following a court hearing&nbsp; held Thursday&nbsp; via Zoom.

The City and County have been at odds over the amount the County is supposed to pay for the service, which under an existing contract is to be shared two-thirds&nbsp; by County and one-third by the City. As of Tuesday night the two sides were $38,000 apart.

Junction City Commissioners had planned to suspend EMS services to the unincorporated areas outside of the City Feb. 20th if there was not an agreement on the matter.

The judge has scheduled a status hearing for an update in the case at 9:30 a.m. April 3rd.

Peterson of Junction City was traveling westbound in his 2018 Ford Eco Sport when he struck a deer. Minor injuries were reported but EMS was refused. The vehicle was moved by the owner.

Geary County Public Works would like to remind the public of our new hours for the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW), Recycling Center, &amp; the Landfill.

We will be open this Saturday, February 10th, from 8AM – 2PM.

The second Saturday of each month will follow the same schedule.

As a friendly reminder, HHW will take items such as paint, household cleaners, batteries &amp; small appliances to safely dispose of. This program is free of charge to Geary County residents and Geary County Property Owners.

The Landfill accepts brush &amp; tree limbs only. No other items are accepted.

Geary County announces Recycling Center and Landfill is open Saturday

The Junction City Little Theater presents "The Foreigner" for shows this weekend and next weekend at the C.L. Hoover Opera House.&nbsp;

"The Foreigner," directed by Quincy McKinney, has a plot that involves misunderstandings, miscommunications, and humorous situations.&nbsp;

Curtain for the shows on Friday and Saturday nights, Feb. 9-10, at 7:30 p.m. The matinee for Sunday, Feb. 11, will be at 2:00 p.m. The schedule is the same for next weekend, with shows Feb. 16-17 at 7:30 and the final Sunday matinee is Feb. 18 at 2:00 p.m.&nbsp;

Junction City Little Theater's "The Foreigner" to debut this weekend

RILEY COUNTY —Dr. Jessica Nelson has been named the Director of Special Education for Manhattan-Ogden USD 383, according to a media release from the district.

Dr. Nelson will begin her new role on July 1, 2024 and replaces Interim Director Dr. Roger Christian. Dr. Christian is retiring in June, 2024.

Dr. Nelson currently serves as Executive Director of Special Education for Geary County USD 475 in Junction City, KS. She has served in that position since 2023. Prior to that, she was a District Level Behavior Consultant for USD 475. Dr. Nelson began her career as a special education teacher for Manhattan-Ogden USD 383. She has also served as a board-certified behavior analyst and a university instructor and assistant professor. She received a B.S. in Elementary Education from Kansas State University, a M.S. in Special Education from Emporia State University, and Ed.D in Special Education from Kansas State University.

“I am honored to be returning to USD 383,” states Nelson. “I look forward to working with the incredible special education department as well as the amazing educators and administrators at USD 383.”

“We are excited for Dr. Nelson to return to our district to lead our Special Education Department,” states Superintendent Eric Reid. “She will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience into the position that will serve our students, families, and staff very well in the future.”

Jacqie Reisinger, Deputy Register of Deeds for Geary County, has confirmed her intent to file for 2024 election.

"Following the article released earlier this week, by Diane Briestensky-Leonard, Register of Deeds, I want to confirm my intent to be on the 2024 ballot for Geary County Register of Deeds.

I have worked for Geary County in the Register of Deeds office since October 2019, and have been the Deputy since April 2021. Diane has mentored me from the start, and I am grateful for the opportunities that have been made available for me in this office."

While the Register of Deeds office is widely known for recording real estate transactions and other related documents, the Office also maintains all land and military discharge records for Geary County. They have recently started a large project to update records, ensuring accessibility for title companies, researchers, and general public coming into the office. The goal is to digitalize and preserve records going back an additional 10 years in the software program.

Reisinger said she is proud to be from Geary County and excited to continue serving the people here. The reputation built by this office is something that she stands behind and is adamant to maintain.

Junction City Mayor Pat Landes noted Tuesday he is waiting for a plan&nbsp; from staff for Helland Park, which is located in the west central part of the city.

City Manager Allen Dinkel said an ARPA list will be brought to the commission at a meeting in the near future.&nbsp;

Landes said that there is a lot to do not only in cleanup but to make the site a park. There is 53 acres at the location..

A new ice cream and bakery shop is open in Junction City, as Frost and Flour Bakery officially opened for business today. 

Hannah Hasbrouck, the owner of the new bakery shop said the business venture began in July of 2023 when she began doing all kinds of work inside the building. Frost and Flour Bakery is located at 725 N. Washington in Junction City and serves many  kinds of sweets, including brownies, cookies, ice cream, and more. 

Hours of operation are Wednesday-Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The store is closed on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.
