Construction of the new high school continues to press towards timely completion to support its opening for the fall semester. High school classes are now planned to commence on August 25th. All other schools will commence classes as previously scheduled.

Chief Operations Officer David Wild states that recent developments with the loss of city inspectors are a contributing factor to this decision. The two-week start of school delay affords room on the calendar to complete the inspection process without placing undue stress on its city partner. It also affords an opportunity for construction to proceed in key areas without unnecessary acceleration.

“It’s remarkable that Hutton Construction has been able to stay this close to its construction schedule given that the District added approximately $17M in new work, including $3M in the month of June, and in the face of an ongoing pandemic.” Wild added.

Students and staff will safely start school on August 25th while construction on the auditorium, main gym, wrestling, and weight rooms will be completed shortly after Labor Day. Late additions to the project include the orchestra and multi-purpose and fitness rooms which will remain under construction into early October.

Beth Hinshaw, a youth development specialist for community vitality in southeast Kansas, said 4-H exhibits are a highlight of many county fairs.&nbsp;

“Our young people love it when people from the community come and see their projects,” Hinshaw said.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/" target="_blank">Kansas 4-H</a>&nbsp;members have been preparing their fair exhibits since last fall in one of nearly three dozen projects areas.&nbsp;

“One of the great things about 4-H is that we help people find their spark; we help them find a project that they just love,” Hinshaw said “They work hard to master that project and sometimes it even leads them to a professional career.”&nbsp;

Depending on the size of the fair, dozens or even hundreds of 4-H projects will be on display at the county level. Youth who earn a state fair blue or purple ribbon are eligible to then show their project at the Kansas State Fair in early September.&nbsp;

Some of the projects include making rockets, furniture or clothing; photography; growing flowers or vegetables; caring for livestock; baking; painting and many more.&nbsp;

“If people are thinking, ‘you know, 4-H might be something my family is interested in,’ then the local 4-H fair is the perfect place to go because you get to see so many of the possibilities,” Hinshaw said.&nbsp;

“I think the other thing you see is young people having fun. I can remember, from my own 4-H experience as a youth, getting my projects judged. That was great, but some of my best memories of the fair are just all of the fun I had with my friends.”&nbsp;

Hinshaw said many 4-H youth also are involved in leadership at the local fair, including helping with project judging, working in the concession stand and more.&nbsp;

“Sometimes what we see on the news about young people is negative,” she said. “But a quick walk through a county fair or a 4-H fair somewhere really helps you feel good about what it is that young people are learning and the direction they are going.”&nbsp;

Kansas 4-H members gear up for county fairs 

Geary County Commission Chair Trish Giordano has confirmed that officials have learned unofficially that no&nbsp; air quality issues were found in the Montgomery Building where the Convention &amp; Visitor's Bureau has been housed. "We're waiting on an official report. I did mention to the other commissioners that I feel that if there are no issues located with extensive testing that we've done that the CVB can move back into the Montgomery Building ( 222 West 6th Street ) but we will check with workman's comp and see what they say."

CVB staff moved to a temporary location in the Geary County Office Building conference room in April after it was noted that employees were experiencing irritation in their nose, mouth and throat area. Testing done by ISI of Wichita has not found any problems pertaining to carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, mold or any chemical stemming from carpet that is stored in the building.

The County is currently advertising for a new CVB director. Giordano commented that officials next week will start setting up interviews. Former director Michelle Stimatze resigned to take a job with the Geary County Public Works Department but is providing limited help for five hours per week on financial voucher paperwork for the CVB.

Giordano also confirmed that Rick Dykstra has been appointed to the CVB Advisory Committee. She said that Dykstra has extensive knowledge in tourism and will be an asset to the board. "He's also commented that he would volunteer 10-15 hours a week just to help out the day to day operations, answer any questions that he can and try to keep things going as normal as possible. " Dykstra is a former CVB employee, and also does contract work with Acorns Resort. "So he is qualified to serve on the CVB per statute...the CVB Board, said Giordano.

Fort Riley’s 36th annual 10-5-2 Prairie Run will be held July 17, starting at King Field House.&nbsp; The Army said the event provides runners options of three different courses: competitively timed 10 and 5-mile races, plus a 2-mile fun run.

Runners for the 10 and 5-mile races must register online at&nbsp;<a href="https://riley.armymwr.com/" target="_blank">https://riley.armymwr.com</a>&nbsp;by 10 p.m., July 14. Registered runners who do not have a DoD ID card will check in at Henry Gate near Marshall Army Airfield (Exit 301 off I-70) on race day. Late registrations will not be accepted. There is a $15 registration fee for the 10 and 5-mile races.

There is no pre-registration or fee required for the 2-mile fun run and participants in that event may bring strollers. No pets, bicycles roller blades or skateboards are allowed on the course for any of the races.

Races begin at 7 a.m. Saturday and all runners are encouraged to arrive early.

K-State expert shares tips on what to look for in healthy recipes&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. – It has been well documented during the COVID-19 pandemic that Americans spent more time eating, working and cooking at home.&nbsp;

And, for many, that included many more visits to the family’s favorite recipe book.&nbsp;

Recipes are fun, but “they are also a science,” said K-State Research and Extension northeast area family and consumer sciences specialist Sharolyn Jackson. “You can make some modifications and tweak recipes in some cases, but in a lot of baked goods, for example, those measurements are based on scientific proportions. So, being accurate and following the recipe is really important.”&nbsp;

Jackson, though, knows that science is ever-changing.&nbsp;

“I’m reminded of a favorite quote: ‘Science is not the truth; science is finding the truth. And when science changes its opinion, it didn’t lie to you. It learned more.’&nbsp;

“I think about that because good nutrition is a very new science in comparison to many other sciences.”&nbsp;

Jackson pointed to the fact that nutritionists once advised people to choose a low-fat or nonfat diet.&nbsp;

“That science has changed because now it’s not just that you look at low-fat or nonfat foods, but it’s the type of fat in that food,” she said. “We always knew there were different types of fat, but years ago we thought they were processed the same in the body, and now we know they are not.&nbsp;

“We recommend now that people use unsaturated fats, rather than saturated fats. Things that we told people years ago to avoid, we now say to eat these because they’re good for you, even though they have fat in them.”&nbsp;

Those types of changes have helped form guidance for how to adapt time-tested recipes, some of which may have been passed down through generations of families.&nbsp;

Jackson offered the following thoughts on choosing healthy recipes, or adapting existing recipes to make them healthier:&nbsp;

Look for veggies. “We know that fruits and vegetables are important in the diet, and the recommendations for how much to include have actually gone up over the years,” she said.&nbsp;

Jackson said one idea is to look for recipes in which vegetables can serve as a main dish, “and then if you want meat with the meal, add a side dish of fish, grilled chicken or the occasional red meat.”&nbsp;

“Instead of making the meat the main dish, make the vegetables the main dish.”&nbsp;

Use whole grains.&nbsp;If a recipe calls for white rice, consider substituting brown rice or another grain. “You can experiment a bit even with some of the ancient grains,” Jackson said. “And, think about mixing grains; go half and half with pasta and rice, or half white/half whole grain pasta or rice.”&nbsp;

Use whole wheat flour instead of white flour.&nbsp;This is an easy substitute for any recipe that is not leavened by yeast, including cookies and quick breads. If your family is not keen on traditional whole wheat flour, use white whole wheat flour, Jackson said.&nbsp;

Bake it to make it.&nbsp;If a recipe calls for frying a food, bake it instead, and avoid breading, which adds fat and calories.&nbsp;

Cut the sugar.&nbsp;Use one-third to one-half less sugar in recipes for such goodies as cookies, muffins and quick bread. “If there’s a recipe that you use often, such as a family recipe, start by reducing maybe one-fourth of that sugar,” Jackson said. “Then, each time you make the recipe, but out a little more and not how much you used each time.”&nbsp;

“When you get to the point where that recipe is not working anymore, or your family may not like it, then you know that’s how much you can cut out. Alter the recipe from there on.”&nbsp;

That same strategy can be used in cutting back on salt, Jackson said.&nbsp;

Substitute herbs and spices for salt.&nbsp;Herbs and spices can be more pleasing in many foods. Jackson said many people’s taste buds are trained for salt, but with small changes, they can be re-trained to enjoy certain herbs and spices in foods.&nbsp;

Choose dark greens.&nbsp;Iceberg lettuce is the most popular type of lettuce, but it’s mostly water. “If you’re going to use iceberg lettuce for a salad, load it up with a lot of other vegetables – tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and more,” said Jackson, who suggests such leafy greens as spinach, mixed greens, arugula and kale.&nbsp;

Eat Mediterranean style.&nbsp;This is a diet choice that incorporates fruit, vegetables, nut seeds, fish and leaner meats and lots of vegetables.&nbsp;

Jackson said many K-State Research and Extension agents are incorporating similar guidelines into healthier recipes offered in local programs. “When we, as extension agents, provide a recipe to the public through an education program,” she said, “we know that it has been thought through…and it’s a healthy recipe for your family.”&nbsp;

Jackson said newer versions of recipes also include important food safety reminders, such as washing hands and produce, and avoiding cross contamination.&nbsp;

(JUNCTION CITY, KS) Konza Prairie Community Health Center will host the 5th Annual Back to School Health Fair on Friday, July 30. The event will take place from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Konza clinic – 361 Grant Avenue in Junction City.

All students in the community and their families are welcome to attend. The Back to School Health Fair provides an opportunity for students to receive a number of important health and wellness services:

(JUNCTION CITY, KS) Konza Prairie Community Health Center will host the 5th Annual Back to School Health Fair on Friday, July 30. The event will take place from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Konza clinic – 361 Grant Avenue in Junction City.All students in the community and their families are welcome to attend. The Back to School Health Fair provides an opportunity for students to receive a number of important health and wellness services:· COVID-19 Vaccine for all ages 12+· Childhood Vaccines for all school age kids*· Sport Physicals - $20 or a donation of five canned goods· Dental Oral Health Screening*For those interested in vaccinations, please bring shot records and your insurance card if you have one. Insurance is not required and there is no out-of-pocket cost for vaccines.All medical services are provided on a first come, first-served basis. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian with ID to receive vaccines, physicals or dental screening.The health fair will also feature community organizations providing important information on health, wellness, and community activities. The brunch is scheduled for August 7th at 9:30am. Tickets are $150 and must be purchased prior to Friday, July 30th.

MANHATTAN —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary in Manhattan.

Just before 12:30p.m. Friday, officers filed a report for burglary in the 1800 block of Cassell Road. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 57-year-old man told police an unknown suspect entered the garage of his rental property and stole a GE stackable washer and dryer set. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $1,000. Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Jackie Mundt, Pratt County farmer and rancher One of the hardest parts about making a new life in Kansas for me has been missing so much of my old life in Wisconsin. In my early years as a Kansan, I longed for things here to feel more like home. Over time my appreciation for Kansas has grown, and it has begun to feel like home to me. I didn’t realize until recently that the trade-off for this connection and comfort to my new home state was made possible by drifting further from my old one. Since I left for college more than 15 years ago, I always managed to make a handful of trips home each year. With COVID, my visits were limited, and the time between felt somehow longer. Over the Fourth of July holiday, I returned to my childhood home for a visit. As I drove into town around midnight, I felt tired from the 12-hour trek, but I kept blinking my eyes because everything seemed strange. Things felt smaller — the buildings, the distance between streets. Trees and other vegetation seemed bigger, like they were swallowing up the road. The pavement seemed to be faded and cracked in a way I had never noticed before. Barns and sheds I swear were in good shape the last time I drove by are falling down. &nbsp; For a few days, it was like having a surreal dream in which I knew the places, people and sites around me but they were all somehow slightly foreign to me. On my trip home, I was thinking about why things had felt so different and a light bulb went off in my head. The place where I grew up was no longer mine. The nostalgia of our childhoods is powerful. These places grew us, and it can devastating to lose the physical connection to them.&nbsp; A person can know that the home of a long-gone, beloved relative has been demolished and still have their heart skip a beat when they see the reality replacing the faded memory. Alumni can be aware of a school merger changing the name, mascots and colors but not realize how bizarre it will feel to see a new team playing on the same field they once occupied. It was a bittersweet recognition I am an outsider in my hometown. My parents’ home will always be my childhood home, but it is no longer my home. The town is full of people and places that evoke fond memories and have a special place in my heart, but I am no longer a part of their community. When we no longer own these places, it can be hard for our hearts to let go because there was too much life played out in these spaces. My realization actually gave me comfort because it reminded me how fortunate I am to have found a new home that I love. Letting my mental allegiance shift from my childhood hometown to my forever hometown has create the room in my life to make a full commitment to the life I am living here in Kansas. To make the most of my new home, I am going to do my best to be present and cherish everyday moments with people that make me feel at home. Take pictures of the special things I want to remember for years to come. And depart your everyday places with a grateful heart because it could be your last visit, and there really is no place like home.

New teachers are hard to find right now for many school districts and Geary USD 475 is no exception. Dr. Deb Gustafson, Associate Superintendent of Schools, reported to the school board last week that the District is getting creative and have been reaching out to the community for people they know. "Especially like the foreign languages, music, band, and orchestra, people that may have had a degree and never utilized it. " Gustafson added they've been in the music world and had a degree, but never sought to be a teacher. "We're actually reaching out to some of those individuals to see if they'd like to try it for a year."

Also on the hiring topic, Fort Riley Garrison Commander Col. William McKannay reported that the installation has started their in-person victory welcomes again where new Soldiers and families on post attend a series of briefings. They have started information fairs. He informed school officials that may be a way to reach that military population.&nbsp;

The 1st Brigade deployment might mean less students in the school district this year, but also might mean that there may not be a need for quite as many teachers.

USD 475 reaches out for teaching help

Junction City Police Chief John Lamb and other police department supervisors will discuss and present data on crime statistics and officer activities during the Northeast Chiefs Advisory Council Monday evening at 7 p.m.&nbsp;

This meeting will be held at 701 North Jefferson at the Municipal Court - City Commission meeting room. The meeting will focus on the area of the city south of 6th Street and to the west of Jackson Street.&nbsp;

Members of the public encouraged to better understand what JCPD s doing in their area.&nbsp; Chief Lamb will also answer questions those in attendance may have and will offer them the opportunity to look at the data.

Thursday July 15th is the date for the 4-H Public Revue and Royalty Crowning in Geary County. It will begin at 7 p.m. at the 4-H &amp; Senior Center.&nbsp;

The second place judges pick receives 5% and the third place judges pick a ribbon. Participants must provide at least one gallon of their finest salsa.&nbsp;

Derek Shokey, Fort Riley, was traveling southbound on Price Street in a 2001 Oldsmobile Alero when he failed to yield the right of way to Justin Havener, Abilene, who was traveling eastbound on East 8th Street on a 2019 Harley Davidson Road-Glide motorcycle. The Sheriff's Department reported that there were no injuries and both vehicles sustained disabling damage.

At 5:57 a.m. Saturday Deputies responded to the 2600 block of Old Highway 40 for a single vehicle accident. Jarvis T. Collins III, Abilene, was westbound in a 2016 Honda Civic when the vehicle hydroplaned before striking a pole and going into a ditch. There were no injuries reported. The car sustained disabling damage.

Geary USD 475 Board of Education member Dave Walker has been closely involved in the planning and oversight of the new Junction City High School project. He said during a Board of Education meeting this week that he has taken about 60 tours of the facility since the project began.

"It's just amazing the progress and the quality," said Walker. He noted that when people get to see the school "it's going to blow your mind. I tell you what, the auditorium looks like the metropolitan opera, the gyms are just beautiful. The hallways with carpet and tile on the walls, it looks like a college it really does."

Classes for students in the new school are scheduled to begin Aug. 25th.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Almost $4 million in CDBG-CV grants are headed to small and rural Kansas communities.

Governor Laura Kelly says the third round of Community Block Grant Coronavirus Response Supplement awards will distribute almost $4 million to 25 Kansas communities in order to promote business retention for those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Kansas continues to experience record economic success, bringing in jobs and business investment at historic levels,” Governor Kelly said. “These grant funds will support that momentum by ensuring small Kansas businesses can maintain their workforce. We’ll continue to focus strategic investments that will create a stronger, more resilient economy to help Kansas businesses and families succeed.”

According to Gov. Kelly, CDBG-CV is administered by the Kansas Dept. of Commerce. She said the two previous rounds awarded cities and counties with projects that pertained to economic development and meal programs. However, she said unlike the previous rounds, these grants are available to specifically ensure job retention for Kansas businesses with fewer than 50 employees.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Senator Roger Marshall supports the development of new ‘Product of USA’ labels for meat labels.

Senator Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) says President Joe Biden signed an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2021/07/09/fact-sheet-executive-order-on-promoting-competition-in-the-american-economy/" target="_blank">Executive Order</a>&nbsp;to direct the U.S. Department of Agriculture to consider issuing new rules that define when meat can bear ‘Product of USA’ labels.

“I am fully supportive of ensuring that meat labels are clear and accurate for consumers. The current ‘Product of the USA’ label for beef does not convey accurate information to consumers and fails to help American ranchers distinguish their product in the meat case. I believe multiple new voluntary labels such as ‘Processed in the USA’ and ‘Born, Raised, and Processed in the USA’ should be developed to help U.S. ranchers differentiate the wholesome, safe, and nutritious beef they raise,” said Senator Marshall.

According to Sen. Marshall, the Executive Order follows several key agencies’ announcements of reviews of U.S. origin claims on products. (WIBW) - Senator Roger Marshall supports the development of new ‘Product of USA’ labels for meat labels.Senator Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) says President Joe Biden signed an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2021/07/09/fact-sheet-executive-order-on-promoting-competition-in-the-american-economy/" target="_blank">Executive Order</a>&nbsp;to direct the U.S. Department of Agriculture to consider issuing new rules that define when meat can bear ‘Product of USA’ labels.“I am fully supportive of ensuring that meat labels are clear and accurate for consumers. The current ‘Product of the USA’ label for beef does not convey accurate information to consumers and fails to help American ranchers distinguish their product in the meat case. I believe multiple new voluntary labels such as ‘Processed in the USA’ and ‘Born, Raised, and Processed in the USA’ should be developed to help U.S. ranchers differentiate the wholesome, safe, and nutritious beef they raise,” said Senator Marshall.According to Sen. Marshall, the Executive Order follows several key agencies’ announcements of reviews of U.S. origin claims on products. USDA to consider new rules to define ‘Product of USA’ labels

The Dorothy Bramlage Public Library has announced that their&nbsp; second StoryWalk® JC is available for the public to take part in. StoryWalk® JC is a program that allows families to take a walk and read a story at the same time. Downtown Junction City businesses have partnered with the library to help with this program by putting up pages of the story in their windows for patrons to read.

This month’s story is Clifford at the Circus by Norman Bridwell. This month’s StoryWalk® JC begins and ends at the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library once again. While at the library, families can stop in and pick up a Clifford at the Circus Scavenger Hunt. As families read the story, they can put a sticker on the scavenger hunt when they find the matching object on the book pages. Once families have finished their scavenger hunts, they can return them to the library to be entered into a prize drawing.&nbsp; The last day to complete the Clifford StoryWalk® JC and scavenger hunt is August 15.&nbsp;
