<a>On Monday, September 9, the Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin work to replace McDowell Creek bridge over I-70 in Geary County.</a>

During construction, traffic on I-70 will be reduced to one lane at a reduced speed through the work zone and all ramps to access I-70 at this location will remain open.

This project will include closing McDowell Creek Road over I-70 for complete bridge deck replacement. Cross traffic at this location may enter I-70 and proceed to the next interchange (Exit 311 or Exit 304) before returning to Exit 307 and proceeding on McDowell Creek Road.

Construction will include occasional temporary closing, during the day, on I-70 under the bridge deck and traffic will be directed to reroute through construction using the ramps at a reduced speed.

King Construction Co. Inc., of Hesston is the prime contractor for this $1.196 million project which is scheduled for completion in May of 2025, weather permitting.

Nathan Boeckman has filed as an independent candidate&nbsp; for election to Geary County Sheriff. 

Boeckman said he was born and raised on his family's farm in Nemeha County.&nbsp;"I’m a proud husband to Amy, my wife of 18 years, and father to three sons, Kaden, Brody, and Bentley. We’ve experienced the joy of watching our children grow and thrive, as well as the heartbreak of losing our daughter Ava in 2008. Her memory continues to inspire me to serve others with compassion and empathy."

Boeckman earned a Bachelor's degree from Kansas State University. He has worked for the Riley County Police Department since 2003 where he has served in various roles ranging from the emergency response unit and police officer training to criminal case detective and special investigations unit.

Boeckman currently supervises the criminal intelligence unit. If elected his goals include:&nbsp;

Geary County Clerk Courtney Gilbert has announced that Nathan J. Boeckman has filed as an independent candidate for Geary County Sheriff. He will run in the November election against Republican Eric Coffman.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a series of vehicle thefts that occurred over the weekend in Riley County.

&nbsp;On Friday, a 30-year-old woman reported an unknown suspect was seen on video opening her vehicle in the 900 Block of Walnut in Riley and taking it overnight without permission, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.&nbsp; Total estimated loss associated with this report is $8,000.

On Sunday, four victims reported the theft of a black 2016 Nissan Altima in the 700 block of Allison Avenue.&nbsp;&nbsp;Total loss for the contents of the vehicle including an iPad, Airpods, military gear and tools, is approximately $3,500. Total loss associated with the vehicle is over $11,000. 

Just before 3p.m. Sunday, a 20-year-old man reported a 2002 Honda Elite 80 moped was stolen from a back yard in the 800 Block of Kearney Street.&nbsp;Total loss associated with this report is approximately $1,200.&nbsp;

Just before 8:30p.m. Sunday, a&nbsp;24-year-old man reported his 201o silver Honda Accord was taken by an unknown subject in the 400 Block of Knox Lane, according to the Riley County Police Department activity rep ort. Total loss associated with this report is approximately $12,000. 

Anyone with information on these thefts can contact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/287/Crime-Stoppers">Crime Stoppers</a>. Using Crime Stoppers allows you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Meanwhile, the RCPD also reported the recovery of stolen 2000 Ford F250 at the corner of Westwood and Fort Riley Blvd.&nbsp; Police returned the vehicle to the owner.

RCPD investigating series of weekend vehicle thefts

MANHATTAN —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect for an alleged violent assault.

Just before 2p.m. Friday, officers filed a report of aggravated assault in the 1700 block of Fair Lane, according to the Riley County Poice Department activity report. 

A 42-year-old man reported David Lingle threatened him with a hammer.  Lingle was arrested on the probable cause offense of aggravated assault. Total bond was set at $50,000. Lingle was confined at the time of this report.

“When are you free for coffee?” Long lost friend or a scammer trying to get you to respond?

The Geary County Sheriff's Department reported that Friday night at 11:47 p.m. Deputies responded to K-57 Highway mile marker 0 for a motorcycle injury accident. 

Cody Beyer of Junction City was traveling eastbound on a 2000 Harley Davidson when a deer was struck in the roadway. Beyer was transported to Via Christi in Manhattan for treatment of back and right arm injuries. The motorcycle was removed by private tow.

The Junction City Association of Retired School Personnel (JCARSP) met at the Zion United Church of Christ on August 9 for a catered breakfast meal by Cracker Barrel, which was coordinated by Margaret Kilpatrick, Past President of JCARSP.&nbsp; 

The group also enjoyed music provided by The Kansas Brigade Band, had a presentation about the Geary Community Schools Foundation by Margie Pinaire.

The public is invited to attend an open house for the K-18/I-70 interchange project in Geary County on August 21 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Ogden Community Center, 220 Willow Street, in Ogden. This will be a come and go open house hosted by the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT).

The K-18/I-70 interchange will undergo comprehensive improvements, including the construction of a flyover bridge, a modernized north terminal, and a two-mile auxiliary lane to improve safety and accommodate future traffic projections.&nbsp; Additionally, the southbound ramp connecting to westbound I-70 will be improved.

KDOT will have project display boards available for review, and the public will have an opportunity to speak one-on-one with KDOT staff in regard to the overall project and design concepts for the K-18/I-70 interchange. This project is currently in the final design phase.

Morgan was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for failure to appear. The original charges were for possession of meth and forgery.

The Felix Snipes Foundation is hosting a Back&nbsp; to School party from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 17 at Spin City, 915 South Washington. This will&nbsp; be a dance and skate party.

There will be a $1 admission fee for high school and 50 cents admission fee for middle school students.&nbsp;

All proceeds will be donated to paying overdue school lunch and book fees in USD 475.

The Felix Snipes Foundation is hosting a Back&nbsp; to School party from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 17 at Spin City, 915 South Washington. KSU students earn semester honors

Learn about and celebrate major faiths of the world at <a href="https://www.k-state.edu/world-religions-festival/">Kansas State University's World Religions Festival</a> from 7-10 p.m. Tuesday, August 27, at Forum Hall in the K-State Student Union. This free event is open to the public and will feature religious leaders from Kansas and around the world.

On the agenda is a two-hour show featuring TED-style, five-minute talks by leaders representing major world religions like Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Islam and Judaism, as well as some newer universalizing religions that merge multiple religions into one. Those include Bahai, Daesoon Jinrihoe of Korea and Cao Dai of Vietnam. Featured guests will also perform music, show videos and share spiritual practices from a wide range of religions.

Following the show, there will be a one-hour reception with free food and religious exhibits. More information about the festival's activities and represented religions <a href="https://www.k-state.edu/world-religions-festival/">can be found on the event website.</a>

"This event will really showcase that K-State is a place for all Kansans and others regardless of faith or cultural background and that this is a place that can prepare students to go anywhere in the world and build meaningful relationships across cultural differences," said Michael Wesch, festival coordinator and professor of cultural anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences.  

More than 20 guests from Vietnam, Korea and Taiwan, and religious leaders from around Kansas, will participate in the festival. This includes monks from the Buddhist Temple of Salina and, from Manhattan, Father Gale Hammerschmidt from St. Isadore's Catholic Student Center, Dr. Fatma Rahdi from the Islamic Center, Pastor Christian Watkins of Ecumenical Christian Missionaries, Miriam Edelman and David Marcus from the Manhattan Jewish Congregation, and Bruce Grover from the Bahai community.

Attendees will see K-State faculty members and students showing sides of themselves not usually seen in the classroom. Janyam — a band featuring Rekha Natarajan, teaching associate professor of mathematics, Bala Natarajan, professor of engineering, and their family — will entertain the crowd with traditional Indian instruments. 

Ramasamy Perumal, professor of agronomy, will sing verses from the Bhagavad Gita. Otto Chanyakorn, assistant professor of architecture, will lead a guided meditation from the Thai Forest Tradition. Terrell Campbell, graduate student in chemistry, West Hempstead, New York, will immerse the audience in the Black Church experience with his piano. Resonate A Capella will perform majestic renditions of Billie Eilish's "What Was I Made For" and Lauren Daigle's "You Say."

"This will be a festive atmosphere bringing people from all over the world together to share their ideas about what it is to be human, how to live a good life, how to care for one another, and how to find peace, meaning and happiness," Wesch said.

Many of the international guests are familiar with K-State as they have hosted students on recent education abroad trips.

"We are excited to welcome them to our home and keep building our international relationships to create more high-impact experiences for students in the future," Wesch said.

K-State's Anthropology Club and The Alliance for Religious Exploration, Tolerance, and Education, or ARETE, are helping with event organization. ARETE is a new student organization led by Duncan Young, senior in geography, Manhattan, and its members come from a wide range of faith backgrounds to explore different religions in a spirit of openness and mutual appreciation.

The festival has received financial sponsorship from the K-State Student Union Program Council, the Dow Center for Multicultural and Community Studies, the Office of International Programs, Daesoon Jinrihoe, Weixin Shengfiao and Cao Dai.

Wesch is a Kansas State University distinguished teaching scholar and has received many awards, including a U.S. Professor of the Year award. He is best known for his videos about culture, religion and technology.

K-State to host world religions festival, celebrating global faith and culture

PARIS, France.&nbsp; - Tara Davis-Woodhall, an assistant coach under new K-State Wildcat track and field coach&nbsp;Travis Geopfert, walked away with Olympic gold on Thursday in the long jump, winning with a bound of roughly 23 feet, 4 inches (7.1 meters).&nbsp;&nbsp;

Davis-Woodhall was just announced as an assistant coach for the Wildcats back on Aug. 2nd.

“I’m thrilled to have Tara joining us at K-State. To say that she brings the energy is an understatement,” Geopfert said per a release. “I’ve loved coaching this young woman for the last three years and to bring her elite level experience to Manhattan is absolutely invaluable. She knows what it takes to be great, and she also fully understands the challenges of what life is like as both a student-athlete and as a professional athlete. Her mentorship of these young student-athletes is going to expedite their careers to an elite level in dramatic fashion. So excited to have TDW and her husband Hunter joining us in Manhattan!”

According to Kansas State Athletics, she graduated in 2021 from the University of Texas. She swept the 2020-21 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships in the long jump and was the Big 12 Outdoor Champion.

Before Texas, Davis-Woodhall spent her freshman year at Georgia where she was named the 2018 SEC Indoor Women’s Co-Freshman Field Athlete of the Year. All told she was a five-time First-Team All-American, with four honors in the long jump and one in the 60-meter hurdles.

Her husband Hunter Woodhall is also in attendance in Paris, is a 2024 U.S. Paralympian set for his third Olympic games in the 100- and 400-meter dash.

🏅 New K-State assistant Tara Davis-Woodhall brings home gold

Keith Ascher was the winner in this week's Third District Geary County Commission primary election. During a JC Post interview he thanked those who voted for him.

Looking toward the future Ascher identified the Jail - Sheriff's Office needs and continued upgrades for Stormont Vail Health Flint hills Campus as priorities.

There has been one study which looked at renovation to the existing jail and there will also be an attempt to determine the cost of building another one. The most efficient and best plan will be determined. Questions that would have to be addressed with a new facility include where it would be built in terms of space and land area.

Ascher also noted that since redistricting he has had an opportunity to meet new residents in the District.

Ascher will advance to the November general election where he will be unopposed.

&nbsp; &nbsp;The Geary County Schools USD 475 Board of Education has approved the hiring of Dominique West as assistant principal at Ware Elementary for the 2024-25 school year.&nbsp;West will take over as an assistant principal at Ware after teaching third grade at Washington Elementary under the leadership of Dixie Coleman, Washington Elementary principal. 

Prior to her time at Washington, West taught third grade at Ware Elementary from 2019 to 2023. She began working in the district in 2019 as a student teacher at Sheridan Elementary where she helped teach second grade students.&nbsp;West, who received the 2023 Devin Family Scholarship for Teachers, has been a part of USD 475’s third grade steering chair, while also being a key member of the district’s third grade summer task force.&nbsp;

The goal for a Culture of Excellence was a topic for USD 475 Superintendent of Schools Dr. Reginald Eggleston as he greeted District staff members back for the 2024-25 school year. "Our District mission statement is to become a high performing school district where students are the top priority."

Eggleston said it will take everyone's participation and effort. The daily work is tough. "Yet together we can make our vision a reality."

The superintendent that he was excited about the new year and looked forward to learning about the great work that occurs in all of the classroom. "Together we thrive 475."

The Geary County Historical Society will host STEAM Saturday: Prairie Ecosystems on Saturday, August 17th&nbsp;from 1:00-3:30pm. at the museum at 530 N. Adams to learn about the local Flint Hills Tallgrass Prairie - one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world. The event will include an interactive table by the Milford Nature Center as well as hands on art and science activities for all ages.

Steam Saturday will focus on Flinthills Tallgrass Prairie

(JUNCTION CITY, Kan., Aug. 8, 2024) – Stormont Vail Health has welcomed Dr. Jarett Skinner, an OB/GYN specializing in reproductive medicine and pregnancy care, to the Stormont Vail OB/GYN Rural Health Clinic, 1102 St. Marys Rd., Suite 101, Junction City.

Originally from Caldwell, Idaho, Dr. Skinner pursued his undergraduate degree at the University of Idaho before attending medical school at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri. While in medical school, he decided to pursue his medical career in the Armed Forces.&nbsp;

"I think patients appreciate having time to talk with a physician and have someone listen to them," Dr. Skinner said. Everyone has different personalities, so I try to do my best to meet my patients wherever they feel most comfortable. As long as it is medically feasible, I fully support what my patient wants to do."

Since being stationed at Fort Riley in 2016, Dr. Skinner and his family have proudly called the Flint Hills community home. For Dr. Skinner, being an OB/GYN specialist is his calling.

A new fitness court was unveiled in Junction City on Wednesday at Fifth Street, Playground Park. The new fitness court was revealed following a ribbon cutting hosted by the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce. 

Kendall Schoenrock, with Quality Play for All, spoke about the changes that Fifth Street Park has undergone and how thankful he is for all of the support throughout these improvements.

"Fitness is directly related to quality of life," Schoenrock said. "The more opportunities we give kids and young adults to be active, the healthier we are, and the better it is for the community." 

This new fitness court is part of a national fitness campaign and was made available through the city of Junction City, Quality Play for All, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas.

Members of the Junction City High School football team were present at the ribbon cutting to demonstrate how the new fitness court is designed to give a full-body workout in seven movements.
