James (Jim) Dean Hanson, age 79, of Manhattan, died September 30, 2021, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan. He was born July 22, 1942, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Alfred Ferdinand and Mary Francis (Reinert) Hanson. Jim was married to Linda L. Kirby on August 12, 1960, in Cherokee, Iowa. Jim served for 20 years in the United States Army, retiring at the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 2. Following his military service, they lived in Texas for 6 years and Jim worked at Kmart and Western Auto. Jim and Linda then returned to Junction City and Jim worked at Fort Riley as a civilian contractor for 26 years. He was a member of the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed his cars and trucks, golfing, bowling, traveling, the beach and the casino trips. Survivors include his wife Linda of the home in Manhattan; three children: James D. Richard A. Ellner, 73, of Manhattan, KS, passed away on Sept. 27, 2021, with his loving family at his side. Richard was born Nov. 25, 1947, in Jamaica, NY, to Abraham and Mildred (Slobidinski) Ellner. He grew up in Hollis and Massapequa, NY. He spent his childhood playing baseball, lacrosse, and hockey on the local ponds. Richard married Kathy Sweet on March 28, 1971. The couple melded their Jewish and Catholic customs and shared the joys of each with their family and friends. Together with family, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year. After attending Windham College, Richard spent his life in the family lumber business, working his way from buyer to manager, and later becoming president of an international door and millwork company. Although he spent most of his career traveling internationally, Richard and Kathy moved to Hiawatha, KS, in 1977 where they raised their two sons and he served as general manager of Flair Fold Inc. Richard never met a stranger. If he wasn’t chatting about his beloved Jayhawks, Chiefs, Yankees, or Rangers, he was entertaining friends and family on his boat. You could always find him with one or two of his many dogs and cats. He was also an avid golfer and tennis player. However, his greatest pride and joy was watching and cheering on his sons and grandchildren. Robert May, 54, of Junction City, KS, passed away on Sunday, September 19, 2021 at Cox Medical Center in Branson, MO. A funeral service will be at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, October 2, 2021 at Junction City Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Mark Hatcher officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow the service at Lincolnville Cemetery. Everyone attending the service is to wear Kansas City Chiefs, K-State or their favorite team attire. Robert was born October 4, 1966, in Junction City, KS. the son of Harry and Karen Sue (Metcalfe) May. Robert graduated from Junction City High School with the class of 1986. At Junction City High School, he played the trumpet in the band. He worked for The Master Teacher Consulting in Manhattan, KS where he helped with the production of trophies and engraving. He also worked for long term care facility in Green, KS. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Concordia, KS. Every fourth of July, he would participate in a run where he would wheel himself in his wheelchair. Robert was an excellent pool player. He enjoyed football and wrestling. Survivors include his two sons; Anthony May and Brett May both of Concordia, KS; his father Harry May of Junction City, KS; four brothers, Harry May, Jr., Matthew Albert May, Eric Narducci and Mark Narducci; five sisters, Susan Irene Might Arvizo, Linda Ann Booth, Christine Sophia Hurst, Leza Narducci and Valerie Orr; a host of nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles and a host of other relatives. Riffel September 21, 1957 she preceded him in death February 6, 2020. Duane dedicated over 15 years at Subaru, Webster Groves as an automotive salesman. Duane never missed a chance to get Judy out on the dance floor. They enjoyed swing dancing and even met at a square dance. He had a great passion for sports and was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas State football and Kansas State Basketball. Duane enjoyed golfing, the shooting sports, and attending NASCAR races with Judy. Above everything, Duane loved his family and was always his grandchildren’s biggest supporter. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Diana Marie (Bradley) Walquist, passed away at home in Clay Center, under the care of hospice on Friday, September 24, 2021.

She was born December 27th, 1945, the daughter of Lorena Folsom. Raised in Clay Center, she graduated from Clay Center Community High School in 1963. She married her high school sweetheart Warren “Butch” Walquist on April 25, 1964. He preceded her in death February 9th, 2016, after more than 50 years of marriage.

They lived in Manhattan, KS a few years before moving to Topeka, where she worked as an insurance underwriter. In 1976, they returned to Clay Center to operate the family farm, and raise their children. Diana worked at Hutchinson-Mayrath for 37 years, retiring as Director of Purchasing in 2015.

She loved her family above all, attending every sporting event/performance she could. After retiring, she loved visiting family, traveling with friends, and volunteering her time at the Lighthouse for Christ. A devoted mother, grandmother, and friend, she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughters, Dana (Craig) Rickley of Clay Center, and Catherine (Joe) Hieger of Mt. Hope, KS, five grandchildren: Brett and Thomas Rickley, and Jill, Karen, and Megan Hieger. Her sister, Connie (Gary) Tittlel, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m.on Tuesday, September, 28, 2021 at the Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home in Clay Center.&nbsp; The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m.

A graveside memorial service for Diana and Butch will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at the Appleton Cemetery, north of Green, Kansas.

Diana worked at Hutchinson-Mayrath for 37 years, retiring as Director of Purchasing in 2015.She loved her family above all, attending every sporting event/performance she could. After retiring, she loved visiting family, traveling with friends, and volunteering her time at the Lighthouse for Christ. A devoted mother, grandmother, and friend, she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.She is survived by her daughters, Dana (Craig) Rickley of Clay Center, and Catherine (Joe) Hieger of Mt. Hope, KS, five grandchildren: Brett and Thomas Rickley, and Jill, Karen, and Megan Hieger. Father Merlin A. Kieffer was born on a farm near Clifton, KS on March 5, 1934, the second youngest of 7 children of Peter and Anna (Esslinger) Kieffer. He attended a country school until 1945 when the family moved to a farm near Hanover. He finished elementary school at St. John’s School, Hanover [grades 6-8] and attended high school at St. Francis Seminary, Victoria, KS. He attended college and theology at St. Gregory and Mount St. Mary’s of the West in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he received an MA in Philosophy. On May 26, 1960 he was ordained priest for the Diocese of Salina at his home parish of St. John’s, Hanover. He did graduate work in counseling psychology for 4 summers at Catholic University in Washington D.C. and was guidance counselor and instructor in Latin and Church History at the Catholic high school in Concordia and at Luckey High in Manhattan. He served as Associate Pastor at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Concordia from 1960-63, and at Seven Dolors and Luckey High from ’63 to ’71, while also serving in parish ministry as associate pastor. From 1964 to ’71 he was also Pastor of St. Patrick’s, Ogden. He served as Pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, Goodland, St. John the Baptist, Beloit, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Salina and its mission of St. Joseph, Brookville, St. Frances Cabrini, Hoxie and its mission of St. Martin, Seguin, Ss. Peter &amp; Paul, Clay Center, and its mission of St. Anthony, Miltonvale. He retired in 2005 due to health problems to Seven Dolors Parish, Manhattan and assisted in sacramental ministry. He led and supervised the parish ministry to parishioners who were sick, homebound, in the hospital and in local care homes. From 1980 - 1986 he served as the Director of Education and Superintendent of Schools of the Salina Diocese. He also had pastoral care of St. Patrick Parish, Gypsum, and later St. Bernard’s, Ellsworth. He served on the Kansas Bishops’ Board of Governors as the “Schools” representative of the 4 dioceses in Catholic Education. In 1989, during a sabbatical, he entered a 4-month Sabbatical Renewal of priestly renewal of Scripture, Theology and Spiritual Renewal at Notre Dame campus, and a second semester in further study of Scripture, Biblical Archeology and Geography at Ein Karim, Israel through a program with theology students of St. John’s University, Collegeville, MN. The sabbatical included study tours throughout Israel, the Sinai, Egypt and Greece. He was a member of Rotary Club and served as President and in other leadership offices. Larry Woodyard, age 76, of Manhattan, died September 21, 2021. He was born May 18, 1945 in Blue Rapids, Kansas, to L.B. and Agnes (Roush) Woodyard. He graduated from Manhattan High School in 1963 and received a degree in Administration of Justice from Wichita State University in 1981. Larry married Nancy Ward February 20, 1965 in Manhattan, KS. They had 53 years together in which they lived life to the fullest, dedicated to each other, until Nancy died in 2018 leaving him without the love of his life. Larry was a Senior Airman Policeman in the U.S. Air Force and received an honorable discharge in 1967. After service in the Air Force, he began a long career in law enforcement working for Manhattan City Police Dept. followed by Riley County Police Dept in as a dispatcher. He then became a “beat cop”, worked his way up to Sergeant, then Detective, then as the Head of Investigations for many years, and finally to the RCPD Assistant Director Position. During his years of service, he received multiple awards including Outstanding Young Law Enforcement Officer &amp; the Meritorious Service Award. He retired in 2000. Larry was a cop as a profession, as a person and as “a religion”. He was a member of the American Legion, the Fraternal Order of the Eagles and actively involved in ABATE, serving as the District 15 representative for many years. Larry is survived by his three children: Paul Woodard and his wife Deborah, Brenda Krause and her husband Mark, Brian Woodyard and his wife Jennifer; also, his five Grandchildren: Cory Ridder and his wife Taylor, Adam Krause and his wife Kaitlyn, Trace Woodyard, Savannah Harris, Madison Maynard; and his five Great-Grandchildren; Violet Krause, Jase, Allie and Tate Ridder, Kellin Maynard. Colonel (Retired) Dwight Eugene Engle, 69, passed away at his Nampa, Idaho home on Friday, September 17th, 2021. Dwight was born in Abilene, KS on May 19th,1952 to Von A. Engle and Alice Maudine Lantz (Engle, Steele). He graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture Economics and was commissioned through the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps program in May 1975. However due to delayed accessions, he did not enter active duty until November 1976. He retired after 25 years of active-duty service on November 1st, 2001 at the rank of Colonel and Honorary Chief Master Sergeant. He also retired after 13 years of Civil Service duty on April 30th, 2018 at the grade of GS-14. Col. Engle’s decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with five oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with six oak leaf clusters and the Air Force Organizational Excellence Award with one oak leaf cluster. As a Civil Servant, he earned the Air Force Exemplary Civilian Service Award. Survived by Annette Engle (Wife), Matthew and Travis Engle (Sons), Cassie Hustead (Daughter), Yvonne Kuhl, Evelyn Sohm, Nola Lantz (Sisters), Alan Engle (Brother) Matthew, Amber, Natalie, and Micha (Grandchildren) and 4 great-grandchildren. Kathryn Elaine Burkholder, 61, of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away, Friday, September 24th, at Good Shepherd Hospice House. Kathy was born in McPherson, Kansas on April 19, 1960, a daughter of the late Annona (Baxter) and Robert Burkholder. On November 23, 1984, Kathy married Mark Appel in Buhler, Kanas. She worked as a Director of Program Development and Management at Kansas State University. She worked as a Director of Program Development and Management at Kansas State University. He is also survived by seven children: David Foster (Vicki), Redington Shores, Florida; Robert Foster, Manhattan; Susan Foster (Joe), Manhattan; Carol Wiggins, Clarksville, Tennessee; John Zidek, the Dominican Republic; Jeff Zidek (Lolly), Kaneohe, Hawaii; and Alan Zidek (Jennifer), Parker, Colorado; and 17 grandchildren: Kayla Faccone, Amber White, Rachel White, Anela Lee, Aolani Zidek, Puali’i Zidek, Jessica Zidek, Maija Zidek, Justin Foster, Joshua Foster, Simon Foster, Blake Foster, Breanna Foster, Gunnar Foster, Maxwell Foster, Trey Foster, and Christopher Foster. Fifteen great-grandchildren also survive. Don’s brothers are Ned Foster (Darleen) of Colorado Springs and John Foster (Brenda) of Phoenix, Arizona. He, his brothers, and cousins remained close through the years. Don graduated from Langdon High School in 1955 and Kansas State University, with a Bachelor of Science in agriculture in 1960, and a Master of Science in educational administration in 1961. He taught junior high math and science in Clay Center, Kansas for two years. During 1963-1965, he was the high school principal in Burlingame, Kansas. In 1965, he started work as assistant director of records at Kansas State University. He worked in the Admissions and Records office for 40 years and was the University Registrar from 1968 until he retired in 2005. Don belonged to honorary associations Phi Delta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Golden Key, as well as professional associations the Kansas Association of College Registrars and Admissions Officers (KACRAO) (President 1984) and the American Association of College Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO.) He was on the Board of Trustees of Manhattan Christian College. Don joined the Gideons International in 1992 and was Gideon State President from 1999-2002. He joined the board of Ecumenical Campus Ministries, where he was chairman for five years. In 1983, he became a member of First Christian Church, where he was a Sunday School teacher, deacon, elder, and treasurer. Don enjoyed reading novels and watching K-State football and basketball, Royals baseball, and Kansas City Chiefs football. Watching his children and grandchildren in theater and sporting events was especially important to him. He loved having his family around and enjoyed taking them out to eat. With his grandkids, he liked playing cards and games and putting together puzzles. “The Little Mermaid” puzzle was worn out at his house. He also liked to travel while his health was good. After he retired, he and Ann toured Alaska; at the millennium, they were in Hawaii. Besides staying in contact with his cousins, he met with his former college co-workers — the Kitchen Crew. They worked at the Van Zile kitchen together while in college and continued to meet over the years. The 8 a.m. MWF McDonald's coffee group was special to him also. A celebration of Life service will be held at First Christian Church, 3001 Grand Mere Parkway, Manhattan, Kansas on October 11 at 11 a.m. Inurnment will be October 12, Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan, Kansas. She was born on the family farm in Washington County, KS on September 11, 1922, to Henry and Katerine "Lena" (Knoop) Peterson Arline graduated from Linn Rural High School.&nbsp; She married Leonard Kuck on April 27, 1941, and he preceded her in death on February 2, 2001.&nbsp; Arline was a farm wife until moving to Clay Center in 1966, where she worked as a clerk for the city light office.&nbsp;

Arline liked to crochet and quilt.&nbsp; She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, 50-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a member of the Eagles Auxiliary.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, granddaughter, Rhonda, sister, Edna Hanna and brother, Marvin Peterson.

Clarence Joseph Stroda, prominent cattleman, farmer, devoted husband and loving father was called home to God on Thursday, September 16, 2021, at the age of 90. He passed away peacefully at Chapman Valley Manor in Chapman, Kansas after a brief illness. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Sept 21st at 6 pm in the St. Phillips Catholic Church in Hope, Ks with a rosary to start at 7:30 pm. A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday Sept 22nd also at St. Phillips at 10 am. Interment will be at the St. Phillips Cemetery Catholic Cemetery with a luncheon to follow the burial at the parish hall. Clarence was born on the family farm near Hope, Kansas, January 6, 1931, to father Vernon Peter Stroda and mother Gladys (Smith) Stroda. The fifth of six children, Clarence worked the family farm and developed a life-long passion for farming and ranching. He graduated from Hope High School in 1948. He met the love of his life at a dance in Pilsen, Kansas and married Joan M. Jirak in 1950. The couple spent their entire married life on a farm outside Hope, Kansas where they raised five children, went dancing frequently, and enjoyed fishing across the US and up into Canada. A man who believed in civic responsibility, Clarence served on the school boards of Navarre Grade School and Dickinson County Community High School in Chapman. He sat on the board of directors for the Navarre Farmers Union Cooperative Association, served on the Parish Council for St. Phillips Catholic Church and was a long-time member of the Navarre Lions Club. Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Ethel and Dorothy who died in infancy, his brothers Max James Stroda and Boyd Vernon Stroda, his “pretty lady” wife, Joan (Jirak) Stroda, beloved grandson Brandon Stroda and son-in-law David MacDonald. He is survived by his children, Gregory and wife Theresa Stroda of Chapman, Patricia MacDonald of Enterprise, Robert and wife TeCoa Stroda of Chapman, Mark and wife Rachel Stroda of Fort Smith, Montana, and Gary and wife Connie Stroda of Hope; sister Edna Polston of Hope, grandchildren Angela Stroda, Marcia (Scott) McKenzie, Shannon (Dan) Demory, Melinda Stroda, Hillary (Matthew) Erickson, Matthew and wife Bethanie Krinhop. Clarence Joseph Stroda, prominent cattleman, farmer, devoted husband and loving father was called home to God on Thursday, September 16, 2021, at the age of 90. He passed away peacefully at Chapman Valley Manor in Chapman, Kansas after a brief illness. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Sept 21st at 6 pm in the St. Phillips Catholic Church in Hope, Ks with a rosary to start at 7:30 pm. A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday Sept 22nd also at St. Phillips at 10 am. Interment will be at the St. Phillips Cemetery Catholic Cemetery with a luncheon to follow the burial at the parish hall. Clarence was born on the family farm near Hope, Kansas, January 6, 1931, to father Vernon Peter Stroda and mother Gladys (Smith) Stroda. The fifth of six children, Clarence worked the family farm and developed a life-long passion for farming and ranching. He graduated from Hope High School in 1948. He met the love of his life at a dance in Pilsen, Kansas and married Joan M. Jirak in 1950. The couple spent their entire married life on a farm outside Hope, Kansas where they raised five children, went dancing frequently, and enjoyed fishing across the US and up into Canada. A man who believed in civic responsibility, Clarence served on the school boards of Navarre Grade School and Dickinson County Community High School in Chapman. He sat on the board of directors for the Navarre Farmers Union Cooperative Association, served on the Parish Council for St. Phillips Catholic Church and was a long-time member of the Navarre Lions Club. Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Ethel and Dorothy who died in infancy, his brothers Max James Stroda and Boyd Vernon Stroda, his “pretty lady” wife, Joan (Jirak) Stroda, beloved grandson Brandon Stroda and son-in-law David MacDonald. He is survived by his children, Gregory and wife Theresa Stroda of Chapman, Patricia MacDonald of Enterprise, Robert and wife TeCoa Stroda of Chapman, Mark and wife Rachel Stroda of Fort Smith, Montana, and Gary and wife Connie Stroda of Hope; sister Edna Polston of Hope, grandchildren Angela Stroda, Marcia (Scott) McKenzie, Shannon (Dan) Demory, Melinda Stroda, Hillary (Matthew) Erickson, Matthew and wife Bethanie Krinhop. Edmund John “Jack” Peterson was born in McDonald, Kansas September 6, 1935, to Fred A. “Fritz” Peterson and Bertha (Brown) Peterson. He departed this life peacefully September 15, 2021 at the young age of 86 years. Jack graduated from Atwood High School, Atwood, Kansas in 1953. He went on to attend Kansas State University graduating with an accounting degree and was an integral part of the Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity graduating in 1959. As the Director of Business and Finance Jack worked for the Kansas Cooperative Extension Service affiliated with Kansas State University from 1966-1995. Jack was a lifelong resident of Manhattan, Kansas and a significant supporter of the Community. Jack was known for his generous support to many. He was extremely engaged with the Kansas State Newman Foundation and St Isidore’s Parish presiding as the Chair of the foundation board, for which his leadership and wisdom will remain legendary. Jack was also a special advisor to the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity for over 30 years, paving a successful path for many students. Jack was a Loyal Season Ticket Holder and Ahearn donor for Kansas State Football and Basketball for over 60 years. Building a legacy of ex-Players whom will forever be grateful for his mentorship, leadership, sincerity, and friendship! Jacks wit, sarcasm, humor, always brought a smile to all that were in his presence. Preceding him in death were his parents, brother Robert Eugene “Gene” Peterson, a sister Rita M. Peterson Hall and a brother, Lawrence James “Jim” Peterson. Those remaining to celebrate his life include his sister-in-law, Mary Peterson; two nieces Karen and Kim; five nephews: Stephen, Jeff, David, Tom and Scott, and many others that have been touched by his life. Jim was born April 14, 1947 in Denver, Colorado, the son of Milton Lee and Verda Mae (Miltz) Fleming. He graduated from Centre High School in Lost Springs, Kansas in May 1965. He joined the United States NAVY January 3rd, 1967. He was an aircraft mechanic with Attack Squadron 93. He served two tours in Vietnam on USS Ranger and USS Bonhomme Richard. He was honorably discharged in January 1971. He was preceded in death by his mother, Verda. Jim married Deborah Williams on August 17th, 1970 in Visalia, California. A marriage that lasted 51 years. He is survived by his wife, Deborah of Manhattan, KS; his father, Milton Fleming, Herington, KS; his sister Sue (Dave) Dvorak of Basehor, KS; his son, Adrian Fleming of Manhattan, KS and daughter Amanda Voth of Lawrence, KS. As well as his nieces and nephews and their children. He was employed by the USD 383 school district in the Maintenance Department. He loved to fish and was a talented carpenter. He was a devoted husband and loving father, son and brother. Graveside service and burial will be at the Ashland Cemetery (4698 McDowell Creek Rd, Manhattan, KS 66502) at 11 a.m., Saturday, September 25, 2021.
