Willliam "Bill" Henry Slaughter, Sr, 101, of Junction City, KS, passed away on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at his residence. A graveside service with military honors will be 10 a.m. Thursday, October 14, 2021 at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery. A visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, October 13, 2021 at the Johnson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to be given to Boys Town Nebraska 13460 Walsh Drive Boys Town, NE 68010. William was born May 24, 1920, in Iuka, MS Tishomingo County the son of James L. and Litha Mae (Jackson) Slaughter. He was one of five children. His formal schooling was only to the 5th grade because like many children during the 1930's, he needed to work, to help support the family. However, his learning never stopped. He started working at a gas station at the age of ten. By the age of twelve, he stated, there wasn't a car that he couldn't fix. He was considered a master mechanic at a young age. He later went to work for Dexter Lumber Company as a truck driver and mechanic. While working for Mr. Dexter, he purchased his first car at the age of fifteen. William served in the United States Army during World War II. He served from 1942 until 1945. He served a full tour in England as a driver for his Captain. He was one of seven black soldiers for the 89th Medical Detachment. He returned to Iuka, MS after the completion of the war. At the time, it was hard to find work in MS, so he moved to Kentucky and found work with the railroad. Mr. Slaughter moved to Fort Riley, KS in 1949 and became a tank mechanic. Within seven years, he was promoted to the shop foreman, where he worked for thirty two years having retired in 1980. William worked to the end. He singled handedly planted and gathered a garden of butter beans, green beans, ice potatoes (his made up name for them), turnip greens and corn. The week of his passing, he canned twelve jars of fresh pear preserves. He has done all of this gardening with the loss of his right leg that was amputated in 2017. As he was often quoted as saying, "I lost my leg, not my mind". He was known for his resourcefulness. William met and married Hattie Bell Thompson May 3, 1941 in Iuka, MS. From this union, eight children were born. Survivor include two sons, William H. Slaughter, Jr. (Rosa) of Killeen, TX and Eddie L. Slaughter (Terrie) of Wylie, TX; six daughters, Peggy J. McAlister of Carmichael, CA, Evelyn A. Sanders of Fairfield, CA, Flora B. Lewis of Houston, TX, Kelema S. Bellamy (Kenneth) of Junction City, KS, Marsha F. Davis (Gilbert) Hinesville, GA and Lisa Y. Jones (Alvin) of Lawton, OK; twenty two grandchildren and forty seven great-grandchildren and twenty two great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and two sisters.

Ryan Michael Hawkes, age 34 of Manhattan, passed away Friday, October 1, 2021 at his residence.

He was born on January 20, 1987 in Neodesha, the son of Gary Maurice and Nancy Jo (Mueller) Hawkes.  He graduated from Salina South High School in 2005 and was confirmed into Christ the King Lutheran Church in 2001.

On June 8, 2013, he married Aimee Rachel Hoffman.  She survives of the home.

Ryan was a fabrication worker for R Tech Tool and Machine in Wamego.  He enjoyed spending time with his boys, fishing, hunting, smoking meat, canning, gardening and most recently, woodworking.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Carsten and Cameron Hawkes of the home; his parents, Gary and Nancy Hawkes of Salina; one sister, Stephanie Fairclough and husband Brent and their son, Logan of Salina; his grandmother, Audrey Beemer and husband Wilbur of Tuscon, Arizona; his father and mother-in-law, Kevin and Ronna Hoffman of Manhattan; one sister-in-law, Erica Hoffman of Manhattan; three brothers-in-law, Lance Hoffman of Manhattan, Casey Hoffman of Manhattan and Lucas Hoffman and wife Allison of Richfield, Minnesota and four nieces and nephews, Maple, Rexton, Paxton and Royce.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Werner and Maxine Mueller and Maurice Hawkes; one uncle, James Mueller and one aunt, Nancy Kay Mueller.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 8, 2021 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Friday.  Burial will be in the Sunrise Cemetery

Bonnie Rae Mounts, age 84, died September 29, 2021, at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, KS. She was born August 26, 1937, in Clay Center, KS. Her husband of 32 years, Robert Mounts, preceded her in death. Adams, 78, of Clay Center, died Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at his home surrounded by his family.&nbsp; He was born July 2, 1943, in Clay Center, the son of Alwin and Julia (Yarrow) Adams.&nbsp; Dewey graduated from CCCHS in 1961.&nbsp; He served in the Army National Guard following high school graduation.&nbsp; On December 27, 1963, Dewey married Carol Trost of Concordia.&nbsp; He farmed in Clay County his entire life and in 2014, Dewey and Carol were the recipients of the Kansas Master Farmer and Homemaker award.&nbsp; He worked many years during the winter at Gilmore-Tatge, Carlson Heating and Air and as a field technician for FSA (Farm Service Agency).

He was an active member of the Mizpah United Methodist Church, volunteered for the Wakefield Rural Fire Department for over 50 years, served on the Clay County Fair Board, Kansas Young Farmer’s Association, past member of the Clay Center Elks Club and a past member of the Jaycees.&nbsp; Dewey also enjoyed his many trips to Nicaragua to help build over 17 churches.&nbsp; Dewey was also very talented with his hands in repairs, welding and woodworking.

Bessie Irene (Benfer) Lilley, age 95, of Longford, passed away Monday, October 4th, 2021, at the Clay Center Presbyterian Manor in Clay Center, KS.

Bessie was born on February 28th, 1926, to Edwin Denton and Christina Elizabeth (Bach) Benfer. On a Sunday afternoon January 28, 1945, Bessie Irene Benfer married Charles Edward Lilley in the Benfer home east of Longford, he preceded her in death on November 12, 2019. To this union they had two sons, Eugene &amp; Dennis.

Bessie attended Longford Grade School and graduated from Longford High School with the Class of 1943. She was a member of the Longford American Legion Auxiliary and the Longford United Methodist Church.

Bessie’s hobbies were enjoying the outdoors with gardening and growing a variety of flowers. She loved to bake, especially homemade bread, cinnamon rolls, and pies.&nbsp; Other interests included crocheting and sewing which included making matching dresses for the granddaughters when they were small. She was a farmer’s wife on the same farm for 68 years.

She is preceded in death by her parents, a son Dennis, sisters Mary Steenbock, Mina Kobetich and brothers John Benfer and Henry Benfer

Bessie Irene (Benfer) Lilley

Leroy J. Deaver, 87, of Clay Center, died Saturday, October 2, 2021, at the Clay Center Presbyterian Manor with family by his side. He was born September 1, 1934, in Grant, NE, the son of Nathan and Anna (Hergott) Deaver. Leroy grew up in Fairbury, NE, until moving to Clyde, KS, where he attended Clyde High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 thru 1959. Leroy married Dorothy Gudenkauf on February 6, 1960. He worked for Sears as an Appliance Repair Technician from 1965 until his initial retirement in 1992. He then owned and operated Leroy’s Appliance Service from 1992 until his retirement several years later. Leroy was a member of the SS Peter &amp; Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and the Old Car Nuts Car Club. Along with his car club membership, Leroy’s favorite hobby was restoring classic cars for show, and spending time with family. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Leo Deaver and sister, Rose Eilert.

Leroy J. Deaver, 87, of Clay Center, died Saturday, October 2, 2021, at the Clay Center Presbyterian Manor with family by his side. He was born September 1, 1934, in Grant, NE, the son of Nathan and Anna (Hergott) Deaver. Leroy grew up in Fairbury, NE, until moving to Clyde, KS, where he attended Clyde High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 thru 1959. Leroy married Dorothy Gudenkauf on February 6, 1960. He worked for Sears as an Appliance Repair Technician from 1965 until his initial retirement in 1992. He then owned and operated Leroy’s Appliance Service from 1992 until his retirement several years later. Leroy was a member of the SS Peter &amp; Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and the Old Car Nuts Car Club. Along with his car club membership, Leroy’s favorite hobby was restoring classic cars for show, and spending time with family. Dr. Gerald Lamar Mowry died on Sept 29, 2021 at Bramlage House in the Meadowlark Hills Community. He was 95 years old. Gerald was born in the family home in Hoxie, Kansas February 28, 1928 not far from where his grandparents had homesteaded in Sheridan County. Jerry was a third child of a third child. His 2older brothers and younger sister preceded him in death. When Jerry was eight, he received faith in his Lord Jesus Christ and was baptized in the Disciples of Christ Church. Jerry attended school in Hoxie and was the son of two teachers who valued education and expected determination from their children. His childhood included the Depression, the Dustbowl and WW II. These experiences shaped his life. Jerry graduated from high school in Pratt Kansas where his family moved in his junior year. Soon after graduation Jerry enlisted in the Army to serve in “the chair core” Army Intelligence. He smiled reflecting on flying over the Hump, seeing Mt Everest, or having malaria and waking up in the Sydney Harbor on shipboard. Because of his classification he learned German and some Chinese. He loved to ask questions in German or engage in conversation with people who might be Chinese. Jerry attended Washburn and then Kansas University. There he met the love of his life, Emily Catherine Stewart. They were married on December 27, 1950. Dr. Mowry graduated from KU Medical School and had Family Practices in Platte City, Missouri and Hanover Kansas, where his family grew to three children. In 1960 he returned to Kansas City for further training and specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Finishing his studies, Jerry and Cathy moved their family to Manhattan Kansas beginning practice in the Ball Clinic in 1963. He was a founding member of the Manhattan Medical Center and served on its directorship over his years of medical practice. Dr. Mowry delivered over four thousand babies in his professional life including a daughter and many of his grandchildren. In their last conversations with him several thanked him for welcoming them into life or giving them their bellybuttons! He loved his wife and family and enjoyed the home he built for them at 2007 Arthur Drive. It was a combination of both Jerry and Cathy’s interests in design and comfort. This home brought him joy. Many community, church and family celebrations were held in it’s red carpeted rooms or green lawned garden. Later in his professional life, Dr Mowry continued to challenge himself learning laparoscopy and ultrasound to bring these kinds of advances to Manhattan and his patients. Another shared joy was the opening of his solo practice on Anderson Avenue and the founding of Life Choice Ministries. These two centers of care were opportunities to continues his care, education and support of women and their families in Kansas. A faithful member of Rotary, he maintained perfect attendance for many years. He also served on the Board of Aglow and Full Gospel Businessmen. Dr. Jerry was a health coach before it was a fashion. He ran, swam or walked most days. After the death of his wife, Jerry moved across town to the Meadowlark Hills Community where he lived in Miller House. Here Jerry could be seen most days walking the halls and working out in the gym. He loved sweets and told us “All ice cream is good…..some is Better!” Jerry was a KU alumnus and also a Wildcat Booster for more than 50 years. He loved attending K-State Football and basketball games. Dr. Mowry was a man of Faith and Science. He reflected often on the miracle of birth and the world inside each cell. Dr Jerry recognized the threat of the Covid pandemic and took it seriously. Although he was disturbed by the quarantine and lock-down he observed it with patience and grace. He enjoyed daily conversations with family members and drive- through parades at Miller Place with his great grandchildren. Dr. Mowry got both of his covid vaccines and was disappointed to miss getting a booster. He wore his mask while pushing his walker in the halls of Meadowlark. His last days were made more comfortable by the compassionate care of Miller and Bramlage House. Dr. Mowry is survived by his 4 children, 15 grandchildren and 6 greatgrandchildren. Mike McAdams, age 64, of Manhattan, passed away Tuesday, October 5, 2021. Mike was born December 10, 1956 in Kansas City, KS the son of Martha “Peg” and Stan Fegter and the late Don McAdams. Mike was a 1975 graduate of Manhattan High School and later attended Manhattan Area Technical College. Mike worked for Central Mechanical Construction, retiring in 2019. Mike was married to Lisa (O’Shea) McAdams in 1981 and celebrated 40 years of marriage this year. They had two daughters, Whitney and Taylor and two grandchildren, Mason and Addison. Music was a huge part of Mike’s life and he played keyboards in numerous bands. He had a special gift in hearing a melody and being able to play it by ear. He made many lifelong friends playing music. Without music life would be empty. Mike was quick-witted and always telling jokes. He was always willing to help out friends or family and loved working on home projects. Mike is survived by his wife Lisa McAdams; two daughters: Whitney (Josh) Conard and Taylor (Jarrett) McClain; two grandchildren: Mason and Addison Conard; dad, Stan Fegter, sister, Marcie (Warren) Scipio and brother, Sean (Lisa) McAdams. Ruth L. Ethington, 87, formerly of Eudora, Wamego, and Emporia, KS. passed away October 6, 2021, in Wichita, KS. She had resided at Larksfield Place Care Facility in Wichita since April of 2018.

&nbsp;Ruth was the youngest of twelve siblings born to Joe and Dora Bowie in Valley Falls, KS. on July 20, 1934. The family moved to McLouth, KS where Ruth graduated high school as a Bulldog in 1951 with the distinction of valedictorian of her class. She was also voted Homecoming Queen both her Junior and Senior years.

Ruth married James A. Ethington in August of 1955 and after the birth of four children moved to Wamego, KS. in 1968. During this time Ruth enjoyed working out of the house as an elementary teaching assistant, bank teller, and hospital clerk. Ruth was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church in Wamego.

She was preceded in death by her parents, all of her siblings, and her loving husband Jim. Ruth is survived by her children; Kevin Ethington (Yvonne), Terry Ethington ( Daphne ), Kim Ethington, and Trecia Eiseman (Paul). Ruth was blessed with seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren

Mildred Nadine Herren, 93, of Alma, Kansas, died Friday, October 1, 2021, at the Alma Manor. She was a life-long resident of the area.

Mildred was born on November 6, 1927, in McFarland, Kansas, the daughter of Gottlieb Johannes (G.J.) and Sophia Augusta (Gehrt) Mueller. She attended local grade school and graduated from Alma High School.

Mildred married Willis Henry Herren on October 19, 1947, in McFarland. He preceded her in death on January 18, 2021.

Mildred was a homemaker. She also worked with her brother at the Alma Clothing and Dry Cleaning, and for many years at the Alma School District 329, first as a bus driver and then as a paraprofessional. She worked mostly in the elementary school but helped wherever she was needed. Mildred also volunteered at the St. John Lutheran School. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. Mildred was a self-taught seamstress and did alterations and tailoring for members in the community. She also made coats and suits. She was a wonderful cook and was known for her vegetable soup, fried chicken, cinnamon rolls, and “grandpa’s” sausage. Mildred enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, and traveling. She took numerous trips including ones to Europe, Japan, Canada, and Alaska. In her earlier years, she enjoyed going with the family camping, boating, and fishing.

Mildred is survived by her children; Carolyn Irish (Tom), DeSoto, Philip Herren, (Lisa Parker), The Villages, Florida, Dan Herren, McFarland, and Terry Herren (Patty), Alma; her grandchildren, Derrick Herren (Cori), Jeffrey Herren (Kathy), Kellie Irish, Shana Leck (Joshua), Alison Imthurn (Cooper); five great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a grandson, Nicholas Herren, and her siblings, Vernon Mueller, Loma Hughes, Elmer Mueller, Herb Mueller, and Kenneth Mueller.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, October 8, 2021, at St. John Lutheran Church in Alma. Reverend Robert Grimm will be officiating. Captain Gerald (Jerry) &nbsp;Peddicord, U.S. Navy (retired), age of 102, died Sunday, October 3rd&nbsp;at Grayson Place of Denison, TX.&nbsp;

&nbsp;He was born on a Kansas farm November 16, 1918, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert R. Peddicord and married Virginia Harnsberger of Newport News, VA, on March 30, 1944. They had two children, son Craig, and daughter, Cynthia.&nbsp; Mrs. Peddicord died suddenly on January 8, 1964. Jerry later married Cozy Lee (Pate) Dyer on December 21, 1970, in Durant, Oklahoma. She has two children, Richard Pate and Bernice Gray. Cozy preceded Jerry in death on March 18, 2014.

&nbsp;Jerry was a retired navy captain, having spent 33 years in the Navy, primarily as a carrier fighter pilot and was a combat veteran of World War II and Korea. He was awarded the following campaign ribbons and commendations from his service in the wars: American campaign, Asiatic-Pacific theater with three stars, European theater, Navy Unit Commendation with one star, China extended, National Defense Service and the United Nations Medal (Korea).

&nbsp;Jerry graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy December 19, 1941, and received a masters degree in physics from UCLA in 1951. He was a charter member of Lakeway United Methodist Church in Pottsboro, TX.

&nbsp;He retired from the Navy in 1969 and took a position as manager of the Tanglewood Resort and Country Club on Lake Texoma and resigned after ten years to become a dedicated volunteer for many community and civic organizations in Grayson County, TX. He was a member of twenty-two local state, and national civic, fraternal and charitable organizations.

Surviving are his son Craig Peddicord and wife Buffy, of Canton, GA, granddaughter, Kimmy Cousins and husband James and their three children, Caroline, Matthew, and Alexander, of Woodstock, GA, Cynthia Peddicord of San Pablo, CA, stepson Richard Pate and wife Sandy of Pottsboro, TX, stepdaughter Bernice Gray of Sherman, TX, sister Rita Groess and husband Erich, of Denver, CO, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

&nbsp;Private graveside services with full military honors will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 9, 2021 at the Wamego City Cemetery, Wamego, KS. Captain Gerald (Jerry) &nbsp;Peddicord, U.S. Navy (retired), age of 102, died Sunday, October 3rd&nbsp;at Grayson Place of Denison, TX.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was born on a Kansas farm November 16, 1918, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert R. Peddicord and married Virginia Harnsberger of Newport News, VA, on March 30, 1944. They had two children, son Craig, and daughter, Cynthia.&nbsp; Mrs. Peddicord died suddenly on January 8, 1964. Jerry later married Cozy Lee (Pate) Dyer on December 21, 1970, in Durant, Oklahoma. She has two children, Richard Pate and Bernice Gray. Cozy preceded Jerry in death on March 18, 2014.&nbsp;Jerry was a retired navy captain, having spent 33 years in the Navy, primarily as a carrier fighter pilot and was a combat veteran of World War II and Korea. He was awarded the following campaign ribbons and commendations from his service in the wars: American campaign, Asiatic-Pacific theater with three stars, European theater, Navy Unit Commendation with one star, China extended, National Defense Service and the United Nations Medal (Korea).&nbsp;Jerry graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy December 19, 1941, and received a masters degree in physics from UCLA in 1951. He was a charter member of Lakeway United Methodist Church in Pottsboro, TX.&nbsp;He retired from the Navy in 1969 and took a position as manager of the Tanglewood Resort and Country Club on Lake Texoma and resigned after ten years to become a dedicated volunteer for many community and civic organizations in Grayson County, TX. He was a member of twenty-two local state, and national civic, fraternal and charitable organizations.Surviving are his son Craig Peddicord and wife Buffy, of Canton, GA, granddaughter, Kimmy Cousins and husband James and their three children, Caroline, Matthew, and Alexander, of Woodstock, GA, Cynthia Peddicord of San Pablo, CA, stepson Richard Pate and wife Sandy of Pottsboro, TX, stepdaughter Bernice Gray of Sherman, TX, sister Rita Groess and husband Erich, of Denver, CO, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.&nbsp;Private graveside services with full military honors will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 9, 2021 at the Wamego City Cemetery, Wamego, KS. Thomas F. “Tom” Watkins, 82, of Alma, Kansas, passed away Saturday (October 2, 2021) at K. U. Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

Born November 14, 1938, in Alma, Kansas, Tom was the son of Ray and Ruth Zeckser Watkins. He married Kathlyn Sullivan on October 16, 1960, in Alma, Kansas. She preceded him in death in May 1990. He married Joyce Lind on August 14, 1993, in Olathe, Kansas. She survives. Tom was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Alma and served on the Board of Directors for the Wabaunsee County Farm Bureau. An avid sportsman, Tom loved golfing and rooting for K-State sports, the Chiefs, and the Royals. During his High School years, he played football, basketball, baseball, and track &amp; field and was an accomplished rodeo calf roper, qualifying for the National High School Rodeo Finals. He was instrumental in organizing membership for Kansas in the National High School Rodeo Association. Tom also loved raising and training horses. Tom was employed for many years by Associated Wholesale Grocers retiring as Executive Director for AWG Brands. After moving back to Alma, Tom was currently employed part-time by the Wabaunsee County Conservation District where he worked to coordinate agricultural-related field trips, poster contests, and other agricultural-related educational programs for high school and grade school students. He loved working with the youth to promote conservation issues.

Tom was a devoted family man whose greatest joy came in following the activities of his grandchildren and watching them grow into hardworking individuals. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; two daughters, Chris Robertson (Dale) of Overland Park, KS and Jenny Daniels (Mike) of Gardner, KS; Joyce’s two sons, Joshua Pease (Christina) of Manhattan, KS, and Jacob Pease (Kellie Hirt) of Roanoke, VA; eight grandchildren, Ryan Robertson (Mariah), Tyler Robertson, Haley Lawson (Nick), Katie Daniels, Aly Daniels, Sophie Daniels, Mackenzie Pease, and Isaac Pease; a sister in law, Jackie Watkins of Lubbock, TX; and several nieces and nephews. Tom was excited to welcome a great-granddaughter who is due in February. Mr. Watkins was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Robert Watkins.

Cremation is in the care of the Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Alma. A memorial service will be held Wednesday morning, October 13, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at the St. John Lutheran Church in Alma with the Rev. Robert Grimm officiating.

Richard Lynn Werth, 77, passed away on October 3, 2021, at Hospice 
House in Hutchinson, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on January 7, 1944, in Ransom, 
Kansas the son of Constantine "CG" and Celeste (Jacobs) Werth.

He was the Owner and President of Werth Oil Co., Inc. He attended 
Fort Hays State University, was a member of Sacred Heart Church and had 
served as a councilman for the City of Ness City for a number of years. 
On Saturday, June 3, 1978, he married Sharon K. Schneidewind Gabel, in 
Ness City, Kansas.&nbsp; She preceded him in death on May 4, 2008.

Survivors include his son, Darren Werth and his wife, Kerri, of 
Hutchinson, Kansas; sister, Connette Eckels and her husband Bill of 
Junction City, Kansas; two grandchildren, Ashley and Kyle Werth and 
nephew, Zachary wife, Jessica Eckels.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his 
parents and his wife.

Rosary followed by the Parish Vigil will be on Wednesday, October 6,

Richard Lynn Werth

Donald Elvin Shorman, age 94, of Harrison, passed away at his home on Saturday, September 25, 2021.  The son of William F. and Lauretta V. (Sumners) Shorman, he was born at home on July 25, 1927, in Manhattan, Kansas. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lauretta Shorman, sister, Betty Shorman, brother, Bill Shorman.

While being a farmer most of his life and a man of faith, Donald was an avid antique collector. He also believed in education and this belief led him to receive a BSE in Elementary Education from Kansas State University in 1955 and a Masters Degree in 1958 from Northern Colorado University. The degrees gave Donald the opportunity to serve 23 years as the principal at grade schools in the Chapman School District in Kansas.  He spent a year in a one room school in Green, Kansas before going into the Army from 1950 to 1952 where he was stationed in Germany during the Korean War, and after the war he went to Keats, Kansas for one year, then Talmage, Kansas as a teacher, coach, and principal, then six years as principal of four schools, Upland, Talmage, Manchester and Blue Ridge. He loved his family, students and especially his 7th and 8th grade basketball teams.  

Donald is survived by his wife, Barbara Robinson Shorman, who he married April 14, 1990; his children, Judy Shorman of Galveston, Texas, Martin Shorman and wife Belinda, of Lawton, Iowa, Della Shorman Brower and Mark Brower of Galveston, Texas, and Irven Shorman and wife Lulu of Wakefield Kansas; his step-sons, Ben Robinson of Harrison and Brian Robinson and wife Amanda of Fayetteville, Arkansas; grandchildren, Jason, Jesus and Heidi Shorman, William and Wyatt Robinson, Dillon and Heidi Robinson and Shannon Stephens; great-grandson Dillon Shorman; brother, Dwaine Shorman, sisters, Jane Arents and Lalla Steenbock, Mother of his children, Marion Shorman.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday October 9, 2021, at Trinity Baptist Church in Capps, Arkansas with Brother RJ Sweatman officiating.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time.  The Roller Christeson Funeral Home in Harrison, Arkansas is handling the arrangements.

James Noel “Jim” Beene, 74, lost his battle on earth and went home to the Lord on Wednesday, September 22, 2021.&nbsp; He passed away at home in Miltonvale surrounded by family.

He was a long time resident of Rio Linda, California, where he met his wife Deborah and made many friends.&nbsp; Jim moved to Miltonvale to start a new life with his wife, Deborah and her kids, which he claimed as his own.

He is preceded in death by his son, Jess Noel Beene and his parents, Jess Marion Beene and Dolores Louise Beene.

He is survived by his wife Deborah of Miltonvale; sister, Donna Long of Rancho Mirage, CA; daughter, Chandra Wheeler of Virginia; stepdaughter, Christina Morris of Miltonvale; stepson, Donovan Meadows of Miltonvale; stepdaughter, Julie Meadows of Miltonvale; 17 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Dennis Pedersen, 71 died October 2, 2021 in Clay Center, KS.&nbsp; He was born on November 13, 1949 in Clifton, the son of Martin and Martha (Trybom) Pedersen.&nbsp; Dennis was raised in the Clifton community and was a graduate of Clifton High School Class of 1967.&nbsp; He served as a US Army Ranger in Viet Nam.&nbsp; Dennis married Mary Laughlin on August 10, 1970.&nbsp; He worked for Gilmore-Tatge manufacturing in Clay Center for 51 years, and currently held the position of President of the company.&nbsp; Mary preceded him in death on June 22, 2012.&nbsp; In his free time, Dennis was an avid reader.&nbsp; He was a member of the BPOE and the American Legion Post 101 where he was Past-Post Commander.&nbsp; Dennis was also preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Lyle Walters; and sister, Sherry Montgomery.

Esther Louise Robinson, 86, of Louisville, Kansas, died Tuesday, September 28, 2021, in Shawnee, Kansas where she had recently moved to be closer to her daughter. She was a long-time resident of Louisville.

Esther was born on July 20, 1935, in Margie, Minnesota, the daughter of Wesley and Evelyn (Ratzlaff) Jantz. The family moved to Kansas in 1946. She graduated from Lehigh Rural High School in Kansas in 1955.

Esther married Harold Wallace on June 14, 1963. They were later divorced. She then married Verbie Robinson on August 21, 1965, in Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on May 18, 2015.

Esther was a homemaker while her children were younger and worked as a fill in at the Louisville Post Office. She then began working at Sharon’s Country Kids daycare in Louisville. She also worked for several years as a para-educator at West Elementary School in Wamego before she retired. She loved when she would go somewhere and run into children from West and they would come up and talk to her. When visiting her even as late as two weeks prior to passing, she always had a story to tell you about working at West Elementary. She was an active member of the community and participated in the Louisville Recreation, Louisville City Council and the Sharing Place. She served as an election official and attended the Louisville Methodist Church.

Esther was a passionate reader and exchanged books with friends and neighbors. She could be found often working a Sudoku puzzle. She loved to watch birds and would look up the ones she was not able to identify. Esther was an avid K-State sports fan with favoritism on football and if a game was not on TV she would turn on the radio to listen. She enjoyed going to the casino with her husband and her family will tell you that she had to be the luckiest person as she typically walked out with the same amount or more than she went in with. She recently learned to play Corn Hole with her loved ones. But, Esther’s main passion in life was her kids and grandkids. She loved any time and activity that involved her family and had a gathering every chance she could. Some of the best holiday memories are of Easter out helping the little kids hunt Easter eggs or getting the “Thanksgiving dishes” out. They will tell you that she gave the best hugs ever.

Esther is survived by her children; Michael Wallace, Julie Price (Ricky), and Christy Pease (Chad); her grandchildren, James Primm, Amber Hobson (Kyle), Tiffany Kraft (Kyle), Ashley Barry (Paul Funk), and Taylor Barry; and her great-grandchildren, Lexi Downing, Samantha Primm, Mariah Primm, Bentley Hobson, and Juliana Hobson. She is also survived by her siblings, Anna Gardner (Earl), Johnny Jantz (Angelika), Jerry Jantz (Jeannie) and Dennis Jantz (Marilyn). Jamie Marie Book, 42, of Westmoreland, Kansas, died Monday, September 27, 2021, at her home.&nbsp;

Jamie was born July 21, 1979, in Manhattan, Kansas the daughter of Lonnie Carl Hodges and Linda Denise (Helget) Hodges. Jamie graduated from Rock Creek High School and was a graduate of the class of 1998. Jamie's caring nature led her to work at the Westy Care home as a CMA for many years where she was also able to care for her mother. She loved watching sports especially Kansas University basketball. Jamie was hardworking and loyal to her family and friends as she became a caregiver in her early years to her mother and sister. There was never a doubt she knew the meaning of true love and selflessness. As Jamie became a mother herself, her children became her whole world and it showed. Jamie also enjoyed music and animals. Jamie had several dogs over the years but her true companions were Mystery and Lu Lu; Jamie was preceded in death by Mystery who she cherished very much.&nbsp;

Ruth Marie Diepenbrock, 82, of Alma, Kansas died Sunday, September 26, 2021, at her home. She was a life-long resident of the community.

Ruth was born on October 26, 1938, in Alma, the daughter of Clarence and Marie (Sommer) Frank. She attended local schools and graduated in 1956 from Alma High School.

Ruth worked for Wabaunsee County for 30 years. She was first employed in the Treasurer’s office, and then held the office of County Clerk for 23 years. Prior to her work for the county, she worked for an attorney’s office in Topeka. Ruth was an avid bird watcher, and she especially enjoyed hummingbirds. She loved to raise beautiful flower gardens. She was very skilled in embroidery, and often had her work made into quilts for various family members. Ruth was a loyal KU basketball fan, and she also spent many years supporting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren at their various school and sporting events. She had very special bonds with each of her great-grandchildren, who will miss her dearly.

Ruth married John Lee Diepenbrock on September 25, 1956, in Alma. They were later divorced.

Ruth is survived by her children; Jim Diepenbrock (Sara), and Teresa Larson (Larry Bohn), both of Alma; her grandchildren, Ashley Michaelis, Alma, Chelsea Schmidt (Clay), Alma, Lexi Brumage (Quinton), Wamego, and Hadlee Diepenbrock, Alma; and her great-grandchildren, Peyton, Avery, Cason, Collin, Sawyer, and Gavin. She is also survived by her sister, Marie Miller (Jay Dee), McFarland; and her half-siblings, Dorothy Kemble (Gary), Eskridge, Barbara Frank, Alma, Judy Havenstein (Bill), Alma, Trish Ringel (Gary), Alma, and Don Frank (Becky), Alma. Ruth was preceded in death by her father, mother, and stepmother, Roberta “Bertie” Berroth; and two brothers, John, and Gary Frank.

Survivors include one son, Chris Peppers of Milner, GA; two daughters, Tina Maddox of Milner, GA and Rosa Chappell of Milford, KS; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Benny Henderson, Wesley Henderson and David Henderson. A Celebration of Life and Open House will take place 4 p.m. Saturday, October 16, 2021 at the Junction City Elk's Lodge #1037, 723 S. Washington Street Junction City, KS. George was born October 19, 1952, Bochum, Germany the son of Evert and Greta (Gniech) Nelly. George graduated from Junction City High School. After graduating from high school, he joined the United States Army where he was honorably discharged. After his discharge, he worked for Mobile Travelers and Woolworths in Junction City. He later went to work for DRMO at Fort Riley where he worked for twenty six years prior to his retirement in 2016. George was a member of the Junction City Elk's Lodge #1037 and the Fraternal Order of The Eagles Lodge # 830. He enjoyed fishing, boating, hunting, camping basically any outdoor activities. George enjoyed a good game of horse shoes and was known of being the horse shoe "Champ". One of his greatest joys was being with his two children. He helped coach his son Jason's flag football and baseball teams as a young boy. George doted on his daughter Melissa and would never miss a dance recital. He enjoyed sharing his own passions with both of his children and was extremely proud of the adults they have become and their families. He married the love of his life Kathryn McGowan December 10, 1973, in Junction City. They had numerous adventures together during their 47 years of marriage. Survivors include his wife Kathryn of the home in Junction City; one son, Jason Nelly and his wife Teresa of Omaha, NE; one daughter, Melissa Nelly-Cramer and her husband Michael of Shawnee, KS; four grandchildren, Jayden and Tatum Nelly and Buddy and Monroe Cramer; one brother, Manfred Nelly and his wife Pam; one brother-in-law, Robbie McGowan. He is also survived by numerous loyal friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his six beloved four legged friends, Ransom, Beau, Austa, Bowden, Nikka and Jacks.

Clarence Edward Bean formerly of Junction City, Kansas departed this life on August 25th, 2021. A worship memorial service will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday, October 8, 2021 at the Faith Tabernacle Apostolic Church. Burial will follow the service at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery with military honors. He was born January 25th, 1961 in Detroit, Michigan to James Adolph Bean, Sr. and Ida Mae Bean. He enlisted in the US Army in Detroit and served four and one-half years. He traveled to Louisville, Kentucky where he completed his military basic training. It was there, that he met the love of his life, Drenna Carletta Harris. They got married June 3rd, 1989. His service to his country consisted of many assignments and deployments to include Desert Storm. After successful completion of his military service, Clarence worked as a civilian at Geary Community Hospital for a while and then transitioned to Fort Riley as a Contractor. He currently was employed as a Bus Driver for Flint Hills Transportation (ATA Bus) until his passing. Clarence received several certificates and award accommodations to include Warehouseman ECC, Medication Administration Recognition, Eagle Support Corporation, and for reading his bible through in a year. However, the most important award that Clarence received was the baptism of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in other tongues and then being baptized in the Name of Jesus. Clarence and Drenna were baptized on September 23, 1990 at Faith Tabernacle Apostolic Church, Junction City, Kansas. He enjoyed giving bible studies together with Drenna and doing the work of the Lord. Clarence was very passionate about his work. He leaves behind to mourn his wife of 32 years, Drenna Carletta Bean of the home; two brothers, James A.
