Dona “Jane” was born on April 10, 1933, the daughter of Dwight Custer and Mable Pearl (Jones) Stevens in Satanta, Kansas. She graduated from Florence High Class of 1951 and married Earl Russell Mann on June 23, 1951, in the Florence United Methodist Church.

Jane was vice president of a jewelry company based in Chicago. She enjoyed designing jewelry for 25 years, including for the Miss Kansas and Miss America Pageants. For 28 years she held her realtor and real estate broker licenses. She was a member of Unity Church and the Association of Realtors and was listed in the Who’s Who for Women in Business directory. In her younger days she worked at the soda fountain at the drug store in Florence. She also rode horses and participated in parades, was a drum major and also a band majorette. She enjoyed dancing, playing the piano, crocheting, crossword puzzles, traveling, playing cards, sewing, selling Real Estate and jewelry. Most of all she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and would attend as many of their events as she could.

Her loving family includes her children, Nedra (William) Olenick of Halstead, Doug (Vici) Mann, Darla Diamond, Don (Angel) Mann all of Wichita; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl in 2015; sister, Esther Sinclair; brother, Dewy Stevens; and her beloved dog, Mr. Angel. Jane passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 15, 2021 at the age of 88 years old.

Randall Dean Tate died peacefully on July 13, 2021 at his home in McPherson, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on July 26, 1955 in Concordia, Kansas to Ray Dean and Florence Jean Hoard Tate.&nbsp;

Randy was the proud father to three children, Bridget Johnston, Bryan Tate, and Aaron Tate and grandfather to four grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Randy was preceded in death by his parents; infant son Nathan Tate; stepfather Warren Taylor; paternal grandparents Lewis and Thelma Tate; Maternal grandparents Andy and Minnie Hoard; brother Curtis Tate, Stepsister Georgie Taylor, and stepbrother Tom Taylor.

His siblings, Max Tate, Brenda Marcotte, Dedra Landon, and Willie Taylor all survive, along with many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Randy enjoyed a busy life collecting antique clocks, woodworking, and spending time with his friends and family. &nbsp; He was loved deeply by the family of Kyle and Jenny Williams and their four children, to which he was a devoted friend and family member.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, July 25, 2021 at the Phelps Funeral Home in Miltonvale, Kansas.

James Marvin Eyer, born November 23, 1946 passed away July 14, 2021. He was born in Long Beach, California to the now late Marvin James and Marguerite Marie (Perry) Eyer. He was a feisty and incorrigible child and the same could probably be said for his entire life, add in the descriptives story teller, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was not a perfect man by any stretch of the imagination but he was a perfectly imperfect father to his two children whom survive him. His daughter Kathrina and son James Jr. He was married a time or two or more, the first time to the mother of his children and the last time for 23 years to the late Sherry Lynn Wolf-Eyer. He was most certainly a believer in love and marriage. He lived his life colorfully. He was a heavy equipment operator for his regular nine to five but his passion was fishing, hunting and trapping. He was also served in the Army 1966-1971 with almost three years in Vietnam. He left behind his daughter Kathrina (Christopher) McGarvey, his son James Jr. (Vicki) and his four grand-children Jayme Eyer, Meghan (JT) Wolf, Lori (Collin) Trickle, and Logan Roussel. He also left behind his four great-grandchildren Allison and Christopher Vance, Cullen Goff, and little Ethan Dishman. He’s going to be greatly missed but his legacy lives on in the family he leaves behind. May God Rest his Soul and keep the Devil away. Brenda passed away of a heart attack on the afternoon of July 12, at the age of 77, in Wichita KS doing what she loved to do, planning for a trip.. She was born Dec. 29, 1943 to D.W. and Edith Evans in Lebo, Kansas. She was united in marriage to Roger Lyman on Aug. 9, 1963. They had 2 children and lived in Lebo almost their entire life. Roger entered the Chapman KS nursing home in 2015 and Brenda moved to Abilene KS to finish their life. She was our friend and our mom and sometimes a pain in the butt. Stubborn yet sweet, 100% on the move all the time, sharp as a tack in mind and mouth. Her sense of humor was the best. She was a lot of fun, we will miss her antics. She loved our dad, Paulette, Paige and Lowell so much but her greatest love was for her grandson Brodie. We know she will watch over him and probably haunt the rest of us. She was a clean freak, control freak with a heart of gold and always cheered for the underdog. March Madness was her favorite time of year. She always said “this is your mom” when she called and “I love you” when she hung up. She said what she meant and meant what she said. Never ask her anything unless you wanted the honest to God truth. When she used your middle name you were in trouble and every problem was solved with food. She was there for us every time no matter the time. Love you Mom, there will never be another one like you. Give Dad a hug. We know you are having drinks with crackers and cheese and making fun of your girls. Miss ya already Brenda Jean. Brenda J Lyman - December 29th, 1943-July 13th, 2021

Marilyn Sue Piper, 75, of Wamego, Kansas, died peacefully on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas. Marilyn was born on February 11, 1946, in Formoso, Kansas, the daughter of Laverne and Carol Payne Stansbury. She graduated from Montrose High School in 1964.

Marilyn married Henry John “Hank” Piper on March 3, 1965, in Nelson, Nebraska. Hank and Marilyn relocated from Formoso to Wamego, Kansas in May 1980. Marilyn worked at West Elementary as a secretary until her retirement in 2010. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Wamego.

Marilyn loved spending time with her family and friends. She was an avid bowler in her younger days. Her favorite past-time was going to the casino with her girlfriends. She was a beautiful lady with a great sense of humor and wit.

Marilyn is survived by her sons; Larry Piper (Renee), Wamego, Doug Piper (Michelle), Formoso, and Travis Piper (Karen), Maple Hill; her grandchildren, Bryan Piper (Melinda), Wamego, Todd Piper (Lindsay), St. George, Dexter Piper (fiancé Bethany), Wamego, Derek Piper, Overland Park, Jacob Piper and Brody Piper, Formoso, Morgan Piper, Kaitlyn Piper and Logan Piper, Maple Hill; her two great-grandchildren, Brayden and Haley, her brother Jim Stansbury (Fran), Smith Center. On July 5, 2021, William Albert Hussong Jr. peacefully passed away at his home in Oklahoma City, OK – with his family at his side.&nbsp;&nbsp;Bill, as he was called by family and friends was born on October 12, 1939 to Dorothy (Hasty) Hussong and William Albert Hussong in Cheverly, MD.

He attended Bladensburg HS, MD, graduating in 1957 and made many lifelong friends.&nbsp;&nbsp;He attended the University of Hawaii where he earned his bachelors degree and met his future wife Martha (Ann) Roniger.&nbsp;&nbsp;They were married in 1962 in Wilsey, KS.

Bill served his country proudly in the United States Army, rising to the distinguished rank of Colonel.&nbsp;&nbsp;During his 30 year, highly decorated career, he served two tours in Viet Nam, taught at the US military academy at West Point, spent many years in military intelligence, and later went on to serve two presidents at the White House.

Upon retirement, Bill and Ann moved to Oklahoma, where he enjoyed and supported many activities and organizations such as Bike across Kansas, 5/7th Cavalry, master family mover, avid reader, firearms aficionado, maintaining beautiful flower gardens, cats, Ann’s many various endeavors, and spending time at the farm.

Bill is predeceased by his parents and wife Ann.&nbsp;&nbsp;Bill is survived by his loving family which includes his children Bill (Joan) Hussong of Austin, TX, Shawn (Lisa) Hussong of Norman, OK, and Stephanie (Joe) Valeo of Alpharetta, GA; grandchildren Grant, Mason, and Cort Hussong, Juniper, Lily and Daisy Valeo, his sister Dale (Maurice) Grider of Aniston, AL, and Ann’s brother John (Mary) Roniger, Burdick, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp;He will be sorely missed by his family and friends and all those he touched and helped on his journey.

William Albert Hussong, Jr. - October 12, 1939-July 5, 2021 (age 81)

Donna Darling Bolek, age 86 of Riley, passed away Saturday, July 10, 2021 at her residence.

She was born on October 9, 1934 in Dwight, the daughter of Donald William and Lola Elizabeth (Ledeboer) Howell.

On October 9, 1950, she married Dwayne Joseph Bolek.  He preceded her in death in 1989.

Donna was an LPN from 1969 until 2006 and an antique dealer from 1970 until her retirement a few years ago.  She owned and operated her own antique shop in downtown Riley.  She was proud of the fact that she was the last person to complete LPN training in Manhattan that had not been a high school graduate.  She got her GED in 1974.  Donna started the first  MADD chapter in Kansas in 1984 and her greatest achievement was her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.



She is survived by one son, Dwayne “Abe” Bolek, Jr. and wife Linda of Riley; four daughters, Roxanna Peters of Morganville, Angela Hageman and husband Jerry of Manhattan, Cynthia Baer and husband Karl of Chapman and Alice Webb of Riley; fifteen grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Lola Bolek Tucker; two grandsons, Billy Webb and Michael Webb; one sister, Delores Jensen and one brother, Darnello Howell.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 17, 2021 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home with Pastor Kevin Larson officiating. Burial will be in the Humboldt Creek Cemetery.

Donna started the first MADD chapter in Kansas in 1984 and her greatest achievement was her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

She is survived by one son, Dwayne “Abe” Bolek, Jr. and wife Linda of Riley; four daughters, Roxanna Peters of Morganville, Angela Hageman and husband Jerry of Manhattan, Cynthia Baer and husband Karl of Chapman and Alice Webb of Riley; fifteen grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Lola Bolek Tucker; two grandsons, Billy Webb and Michael Webb; one sister, Delores Jensen and one brother, Darnello Howell.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 17, 2021 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home with Pastor Kevin Larson officiating. Burial will be in the Humboldt Creek Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter and left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.&nbsp;

Donna Darling Bolek

Wanda Elaine (Blackwood) Hafner died on July 14, 2021, in Clay Center, Kansas at the age of 90. She was born on a farm near Miltonvale, Kansas on February 13, 1931, the daughter of George and Jenny (Doig) Blackwood. She was the only daughter in a family of six brothers.

Wanda attended Pleasant View grade school and Miltonvale high school. Her final year of high school, she moved to Clay Center, where she worked at Penney's and attended school. She graduated from Clay County Community High School in 1941.

She married Wayne Hafner on October 2, 1949, in Clay Center, Kansas. She was a devoted farm wife and mother to three sons, Rodney, Randy and Bill. Wanda drove a school bus for USD 379 for 31 years. She was preceded in death by her husband Wayne, brothers Don, Dean, Jack and Lawrence, as well as grandson, Grant Hafner.

She is survived by three sons, Rodney (Kathy) of Great Bend, Randy (Cathy) of Clay Center and Bill (Joni) of Prairie Village: 2 brothers George (Pat Nazarenus) of Muscatine, Iowa, and Rex (Mary Kaye) Blackwood of Clay Center and sister-in-law, Madeleine Blackwood of Clyde: 6 grandchildren: Lindsay (Keith) Morice, Matt (Samantha) Hafner, Emily (Monte) Green, Melissa (Jeremiah) Ostmeyer, Josh (Heidi) Hafner and Sam Hafner and twelve great grandchildren.

Wanda was a faithful member of the Countryside United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and youth group for many years.

Wayne and Wanda enjoyed square and round dancing for 20 years, traveling to various states to dance. They also took many bus trips together, traveling to Alaska, Canada and throughout the United States. They were also avid KU basketball fans and enjoyed watching the Royals together.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Monday, July 19, at 1: 30 p.m. at the Clay Center United Methodist Church with Pastor Reuben Langat and Sarah Gill officiating.

Respect calls will be held on Monday from 11:30 a.m.&nbsp; until service time at the church.

Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Ralph W. Reese, 88, of Abilene passed away July 11, 2021 at Memorial Hospital in Abilene. He was born May 7, 1933 in Gypsum, Kansas, the son of Harry E. and Lucy M. (VanVoorst) Reese. Wanda Louise (Herzet) Carr passed away on Thursday July 8, 2021 at the age of 97. She was born on October 18, 1923 in rural Marion County.&nbsp; Wanda was the daughter of Fred A. and Dixie Louise (Fox) Herzet. She grew up on a farm with her 4 brothers and 2 sisters. She attended a country school and graduated from Marion High School in 1940. As a teenager, Wanda worked at the Elgin Hotel in the housekeeping department.

August 3, 1940, Wanda was united in marriage to Max E. Carr.&nbsp; She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.&nbsp; Wanda enjoyed cooking, gardening, crocheting, embroidery and sewing. In her later years she enjoyed painting, reading, keeping track of her family on Facebook with her tablet and working jigsaw puzzles. Taking care of her family was her greatest joy.&nbsp; Wanda was a member of Eastmoor United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Sew Much Love sewing club, and adult Sunday school classes. She assisted with prom, funeral, and other various church dinners.&nbsp; She loved serving in the kitchen and was always asked to “make her gravy” for the dinners.

Ruth was born February 4th, 1927, to Adolph and Lydia Skibbe in Marion, KS.&nbsp; She attended grade school at Kreutzinger School House and graduated from Marion High School.&nbsp; Ruth married Charles September 1, 1949, at Strassburg Baptist Church, and they celebrated 67 years of marriage in 2016.&nbsp; Ruth and Charles had a small dairy farm in their early years of marriage. They sold cream and milk, along with eggs from their many chickens, along with tending a large garden.&nbsp; They were blessed with 2 sons to help tend the farm, Mark and Don.&nbsp; In the mid 60’s she obtained her beauty certificate and ran a beauty shop out of their home for over 35 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She was a devoted member of the Strassburg Baptist Church; involved in choir, served as church pianist, a Sunday School teacher and involved in Kings Daughters for many years.&nbsp; She was a skilled seamstress and used her talent to support the White Cross.&nbsp; As a deacon’s wife she loved entertaining.&nbsp; Ruth loved baking, especially making pies and bread.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ruth is lovingly remembered by her son, Mark Heiser and his wife Katherine; grandchildren Stephanie Albrecht (husband Kelly) and Krista Donahue (husband Andrew), and 4 great-granddaughters; CheyLynn, Harper, Nessa, and Molly.&nbsp; She is predeceased by her husband Charles, and son Don.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Thomas always had a smile and word of encouragement for teachers and students. Thomas attended all sporting events at Junction City High School. He was a Bluejay for life! Thomas graduated from Junction City High School with the class of 1979. He attended Emporia State University where he ran track. He enjoyed many sports where he spent time working as a referee and coaching various sports. He was a Dallas Cowboys fan. He enjoyed western movies. Many times, Tamara would wake up in the middle of the night to gun fire coming from the television. Most of all, Thomas enjoyed spending time with family and playing with the grandkids. Thomas married Tamara Lowman-Lucero September 27, 1991 in Junction City. Survivors include his wife Tamara of the home in Junction City, KS; two sons, Christopher Zane Lucero and his wife Jennifer of Junction City, KS and Travis Oakley of GA; two daughters, Angela Jacobson and her husband Kevin of Pelican Lake, WI and Amanda Lucero of Derby, KS; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and one due any day.

1SG (RET) Llellwyn “Mac” McTavish, 85, of Junction City, KS passed away on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at Geary Community Hospital. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at New Church of the Living God with Pastor James E. Johnson officiating. Inurnment will follow the service at Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery with military honors. Memorial contributions are suggested to be given to New Church of the Living God. Mr. Llellwyn “Mac” McTavish was born October 24, 1935, in New York, New York. He was the son of Nehemiah Z. and Ruth (Lewis) McTavish. He attended and graduated from New York Public Schools, and afterwards joined the United States Army. Mr. McTavish received many honors, awards and medals during his time in the military. He served in the Army for 22 years until his retirement, as a 1st Sergeant, in May, 1978. Mac served in Italy, Vietnam, Germany, and Fort Riley, KS, where he retired and made Junction City his home. After his retirement from the Army, he went to school to refine his skills as a photographer. Mac opened McTavish Photography and Video Studio in Junction City. His business prospered, over the 30 plus years, and he touched many lives, during that time, taking senior photos, wedding photos, family photos, baby photos, employment photos, passport photos, and animal photos. He really enjoyed taking photographs outside. Mr. McTavish was a member of Kiwanis United, where he served the community and the people of the community, where he resided. He also was a member of Gideon's International and New Church of the Living God. Mac did ministry in the way God assigned him. He spoke at many different churches as a member of the Gideon's, and brought the word of God, and the need to get the bibles in the hands of people all over the world. Mac was also a former Sunday School teacher where he joyfully taught the 8 and 9-year-olds.&nbsp; As a member, in good standing, at New Church of the Living God, he attended and participated faithfully. Mac participated in the Marriage Ministry, the Mighty Men of Valor, and God’s Golden Group (3Gs), the Senior Ministry. He, along with his wife Daisy, was very present and very visible in New Church. They were constantly seen praying with people and talking with the children, teenagers and the young adults at any time they were there. Mr. McTavish married Daisy Whitener on January 4, 1967 in Newbury, SC. He made a promise to her father that he would take care of Daisy for the rest of his life. Mac lived up to his promise by passionately loving, providing for, and taking care of his wife for 54 continuous years. Mr. McTavish survivors include his wife Daisy McTavish of Junction City, and three nephews, Ossian Satterwhite (Chantel) of Texas, and Robert Satterwhite (Octavia) and Eugene Glenn all of Georgia; niece, Millicent Dickey of South Carolina and Godson, Matthew Jacow of Colorado. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Sianna McTavish.&nbsp;&nbsp;

(Suh) Song. John served in the Korean Army. He has lived in Junction City since 1980. He owned and operated several businesses in Junction City. He was a member of the Korean Association of Junction City. He enjoyed golfing and fishing. He married Jung Hee Kim June 15, 1978 in South Korea. Survivors include his wife Jung of the home in Junction City; one daughter, Barbara Obbink and her husband Matt of Kansas City, MO; two brothers, James Song and Jack Song both of Omaha, NE; one sister, Sue Tinney of Junction City, KS; one granddaughter, Aria Obbink of Kansas City, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Patty.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bruce David Council, age 55, of Herington, Kansas, died July 10, 2021, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KS. He was born December 12, 1965, in Manhattan, the son of Bill D. Council, Sr. and Shirley A. (Sherley) Council. Bruce grew up in Manhattan and graduated from Kansas State High School on August 29, 1992. He was a truck driver for Shilling Construction for more than 18 years. Bruce enjoyed reading, music, cooking and grilling, and was very devoted to his work. On February 17, 1995, in Manhattan, he was married to Rose Marie Huff. Rose survives of Herington, KS. Additional survivors include his four children: Brandon Council of Bettendorf, IA, Abbygail Council of Topeka, KS, Skylar Council of Herington, KS, and Bruce Council II of Manhattan, KS; nine grandchildren; and two siblings: Billy and Sheryl. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Shannon. Robert "Bob" G. Rager, 91, of Junction City, passed away late, July 10th, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House. He retired from Civil Services Defense Logistic Agency after 23 years in Colorado Springs, CO. Robert Gerald Rager was born in Vandergrift, PA on August 17, 1929, and was married to Patricia Ann Holiman Rager on November 8, 1979, in Columbus, GA. After graduation, he joined the US Army Air Corp during the last of WWII, served in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War, and retired after 20 years and 9 days of service. Bob is survived by a daughter, Robin Halzle, of Anderson, MO.; a son, Mike Burgess, of Albert, KS; three grandchildren: Jeremy Reagen, Christopher Reagan, Amber Halzle; and 8 great-grandchildren. Robert Henry Collins (Bob), 72, passed away on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at the Morris County Hospital after a courageous five year battle against cancer. He was born on March 6, 1949 to Don R. and Lucille (Ifland) Collins at Belleville, Kansas.&nbsp; He attended elementary school in Prairie Village, Kansas and Jr High and High School in Salina, Kansas, graduating in 1967.&nbsp; During those years he was active in the scouting program and was an Eagle Scout.

At Sterling College he met Mary Neuschwander and they were married on May 23, 1970. They have three sons: John, Jess and Zac.&nbsp; Bob graduated from Sterling with a bachelor’s degree in history and secondary education.&nbsp;&nbsp; He would further his education by receiving a Master’s degree in History from Emporia State University.

Bob and Mary moved to Council Grove, Kansas in July of 1972 where he taught social studies, drivers education, and coached football at Council Grove High School for eleven years.&nbsp; He began his career as a Financial Advisor for Waddell and Reed Financial Services in 1980 and served in that capacity for 41 years until his death.

Bob enjoyed being active in the community and served as a volunteer in a variety of areas including: Hospital Foundation (33 .years), Relay for Life, 4-H Photography leader, Extension Council, Voices of the Wind People Pageant, Washunga Days, and more.&nbsp; He was an active member and officer in the Kiwanis and Masonic organizations. Bob was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church and provided leadership on a variety of the church’s boards and committees for almost 50 years.

Bob had a passion for photography and especially enjoyed taking pictures of sporting events at CGHS for the Council Grove Republican which provided him the opportunity to combine his love of sports and photography plus support and encourage the young athletes.&nbsp; He also enjoyed landscape photography and capturing the beauty of the Flint Hills in his photographs.&nbsp; His camera always accompanied him and Mary on their travels to Washington, D.C., Morocco, London, France, Kenya, Amsterdam, and family gatherings to record their experiences and provide visual memories of their adventures.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Don R. and Lucille Collins and his wife’s parents, John and Ocie Neuschwander.

He is survived by his wife Mary, sons John (Jennifer), Abilene, KS, Jess (Anna), Lenexa, KS, and James Zac&nbsp;(Marie), France and his cherished grandchildren; Elizabeth, Ava, Capri, Marcel, Felix, and Albert who always brought a smile to his face!&nbsp;He is also survived by his brother Barry (Linda) Collins, Salina, KS, brother-in-law Taylor (Cindy) Neuschwander, Tulsa, OK, and sister-in-law, Ginger (Ron) Foos, Tribune, KS and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on July 19, 2021 at the Council Grove Dunlap United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m.&nbsp; A visitation will be held at the church from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 18, 2021.&nbsp; The family requests that those attending wear masks.

Robert Henry Collins (Bob)

Virginia Yates Brunner, 93, of Herington, KS, passed away on July 10, 2021. &nbsp;Virginia was born on November 27, 1927 in Herington, Kansas to Bernie Allon Yates and Esther Wilhilmina Martha Yates. &nbsp;Her father came to Herington from the Shenandoah area of Virginia, working on the railroad, and ended up in Herington, KS, where he became an engineer on the Rock Island.&nbsp; Virginia’s mother worked at “The Beanery” in her young days, and after marrying Bernie Yates became a full-time mother. &nbsp;Virginia’s younger sisters, now deceased, were Lois Ann Yates Pagel and Kathleen Yates Cameron.

Virginia met Alvin Pete Brunner, who also lived in Herington and joined the U.S. Army-Air Corps during World War II.&nbsp; They married at Lawton, OK on June 24, 1944.&nbsp; Alvin served in the Philippines and then in Japan following the bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki and Japan’s surrender.&nbsp; Virginia completed her senior year at Herington High School at this time.&nbsp; They then lived their first three years in many different places, often with limited space.&nbsp; The US Air Force was created in 1947 as an independent service, and Virginia convinced Alvin to become Air Force.&nbsp; Their first assignment was Smokey Hill Air Force Base in Salina, and their daughters Christine and Linda were born there.&nbsp; They purchased a home which still stands in Salina.&nbsp; In 1950 the family of four was assigned to Offutt Air Force Base, SAC Headquarters, near Omaha, NE.&nbsp; They moved near the base in the small town of Bellevue, and their third daughter, Cynthia, was born in June of 1951.&nbsp; Cynthia had heart defects which kept Virginia very busy maintaining her health.&nbsp; She taught Cynthia at home for all her years of schooling.&nbsp; While Alvin performed his Air Force duties, completing 23 years, and then doing 16 years Civil Service, Virginia was a full-time mother and home teacher.&nbsp;&nbsp; When she could she assisted people in need.&nbsp; She helped Vietnamese families who came to Bellevue after fleeing for their lives who were known as “boat people” who started new lives in the U.S.&nbsp; She also assisted with collections of clothing for people in need, often for the Indians in the Dakotas.&nbsp; Cynthia passed away in December of 1998 in Omaha where she lived with her partner Mark Aiken.&nbsp; She was buried in Herington at Sunset Hill Cemetery next to her father Alvin.&nbsp; He had passed five years earlier in 1993 with cancer after Virginia and Alvin moved from Bellevue, back to Herington, where they both were born. Virginia attended St Paul Lutheran Church for many years during her “healthy” years.&nbsp; As a child she attended the Nazarene Church just a half block away from her home.&nbsp; Later in life she volunteered to play piano for the Nazarene Church. &nbsp;Soon after being married, Virginia purchased a piano which remained her favorite possession.&nbsp; She played piano and keyboard with a gospel and country group called The Honey Bees, who entertained at local gatherings and nursing homes.&nbsp; Her best friends were Annie Rohrman and Joseph Zinn, fellow Honey Bees. &nbsp;She developed Herington’s historical museum which became the Tri-County Historical Society, and served as the curator for 17 years, until September 1997.&nbsp; Chartered in 1975, she did much of the planning for the present museum building into which the original museum moved in 1984, seeking to preserve Herington’s heritage and the many items donated by early families to the area.&nbsp; Over the years she served in positions in the American Legion, VFW, DAR, and the Main Street program.

 Survivors include Christine Valaika and husband John; Linda Brunner; three grandchildren:&nbsp; Michael Valaika and wife Jennifer; Michelle Valaika Rives; Virginia P. M. Livingston and husband Clancey; as well as two great grandchildren:&nbsp; Kathleen Rives and Rachel Rives.&nbsp; Other survivors are Brenda Weller; Paul Pagel; Nancy Pagel; Debra Roxberry; Cynthia’s partner, Mark Aiken, and Virginia’s God-daughter, Dawn Annette Wendt. 

Her family will gather with friends on Friday July 23, 2021 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, Herington.&nbsp; Her funeral service will be held on Saturday July 24, 2021 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. &nbsp;Burial will be at Sunset Cemetery.&nbsp; The family suggests memorials to St Paul’s Lutherans Church, the Herington Historical Society or the VFW, all in care of the funeral home.&nbsp;

Virginia Yates Brunner, 93, of Herington, KS, passed away on July 10, 2021. &nbsp;Virginia was born on November 27, 1927 in Herington, Kansas to Bernie Allon Yates and Esther Wilhilmina Martha Yates. &nbsp;Her father came to Herington from the Shenandoah area of Virginia, working on the railroad, and ended up in Herington, KS, where he became an engineer on the Rock Island.&nbsp; Virginia’s mother worked at “The Beanery” in her young days, and after marrying Bernie Yates became a full-time mother. &nbsp;Virginia’s younger sisters, now deceased, were Lois Ann Yates Pagel and Kathleen Yates Cameron.Virginia met Alvin Pete Brunner, who also lived in Herington and joined the U.S. Army-Air Corps during World War II.&nbsp; They married at Lawton, OK on June 24, 1944.&nbsp; Alvin served in the Philippines and then in Japan following the bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki and Japan’s surrender.&nbsp; Virginia completed her senior year at Herington High School at this time.&nbsp; They then lived their first three years in many different places, often with limited space.&nbsp; The US Air Force was created in 1947 as an independent service, and Virginia convinced Alvin to become Air Force.&nbsp; Their first assignment was Smokey Hill Air Force Base in Salina, and their daughters Christine and Linda were born there.&nbsp; They purchased a home which still stands in Salina.&nbsp; In 1950 the family of four was assigned to Offutt Air Force Base, SAC Headquarters, near Omaha, NE.&nbsp; They moved near the base in the small town of Bellevue, and their third daughter, Cynthia, was born in June of 1951.&nbsp; Cynthia had heart defects which kept Virginia very busy maintaining her health.&nbsp; She taught Cynthia at home for all her years of schooling.&nbsp; While Alvin performed his Air Force duties, completing 23 years, and then doing 16 years Civil Service, Virginia was a full-time mother and home teacher.&nbsp;&nbsp; When she could she assisted people in need.&nbsp; She helped Vietnamese families who came to Bellevue after fleeing for their lives who were known as “boat people” who started new lives in the U.S.&nbsp; She also assisted with collections of clothing for people in need, often for the Indians in the Dakotas.&nbsp; Cynthia passed away in December of 1998 in Omaha where she lived with her partner Mark Aiken.&nbsp; She was buried in Herington at Sunset Hill Cemetery next to her father Alvin.&nbsp; He had passed five years earlier in 1993 with cancer after Virginia and Alvin moved from Bellevue, back to Herington, where they both were born. Virginia attended St Paul Lutheran Church for many years during her “healthy” years.&nbsp; As a child she attended the Nazarene Church just a half block away from her home.&nbsp; Later in life she volunteered to play piano for the Nazarene Church. &nbsp;Soon after being married, Virginia purchased a piano which remained her favorite possession.&nbsp; She played piano and keyboard with a gospel and country group called The Honey Bees, who entertained at local gatherings and nursing homes.&nbsp; Her best friends were Annie Rohrman and Joseph Zinn, fellow Honey Bees. &nbsp;She developed Herington’s historical museum which became the Tri-County Historical Society, and served as the curator for 17 years, until September 1997.&nbsp; Chartered in 1975, she did much of the planning for the present museum building into which the original museum moved in 1984, seeking to preserve Herington’s heritage and the many items donated by early families to the area.&nbsp; Over the years she served in positions in the American Legion, VFW, DAR, and the Main Street program. Survivors include Christine Valaika and husband John; Linda Brunner; three grandchildren:&nbsp; Michael Valaika and wife Jennifer; Michelle Valaika Rives; Virginia P. M. Livingston and husband Clancey; as well as two great grandchildren:&nbsp; Kathleen Rives and Rachel Rives.&nbsp; Other survivors are Brenda Weller; Paul Pagel; Nancy Pagel; Debra Roxberry; Cynthia’s partner, Mark Aiken, and Virginia’s God-daughter, Dawn Annette Wendt. Her family will gather with friends on Friday July 23, 2021 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, Herington.&nbsp; Her funeral service will be held on Saturday July 24, 2021 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. &nbsp;Burial will be at Sunset Cemetery.&nbsp; The family suggests memorials to St Paul’s Lutherans Church, the Herington Historical Society or the VFW, all in care of the funeral home.&nbsp;

He participated in various club activities including charity rides, fallen brother rides, and flag ceremonies to other states. He rejoined the club in 2020 and was re-patched January 1, 2021. Donnie participated in multiple fund raisers for Veterans organizations. His greatest joy in life was riding; he had friends stretched all over the state. Donnie never met a stranger. He always had a smile and hug for everyone. He was a big, loud, fun loving teddy bear. Donnie always was ready to sing karaoke. She grew up in Falls City. The family moved to Abilene when EllaJo was a sophomore in High School. She Graduated from AHS in 1950 and continued her education and graduated from Mount St. Scholastica College in Atchison, Kansas in 1954 with an Education Degree. She was united in Marriage to Garold K Callahan June 12, 1954 and they had 2 children and were later divorced. EllaJo taught Kindergarten in Abilene for over 35 years and retired from teaching in 1997. She loved her “Babies” and gave so many children a wonderful start in their education. Family and her Catholic faith were the 2 most important things to her. She always said she was blessed to have such a large, extended family that was close and loved each other so much. She was an avid volunteer through the years helping at Enterprise Estates, Dickinson County Historical Society and Abilene &amp; Smoky Valley Railroad. She was a member of St Andrews Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and Retired Teachers Association. Gerald Russell Reeck was born on December 28, 1945, in Tacoma, Washington. He died unexpectedly on July 1, 2021 in Manhattan, Kansas. He was a beloved partner, father, grandfather, educator, colleague, and scientist. Having earned a Ph.D. at the University of Washington and completed a post-doc at the National Institutes of Health, Jerry came to Manhattan in 1974 as a young assistant professor. He and his family fell in love with Manhattan, with Kansas, and with Kansas State University, where he worked with single-minded devotion and unbounded energy for 47 years. In his years in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, Jerry taught and mentored countless undergraduate and graduate students, and post-docs. In addition, during his tenure, he served on Faculty Senate, as Associate Dean of the Graduate School, and as Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He was well-known and liked across campus. Jerry was a true Renaissance man interested in languages, philosophy, history, and poetry. He found refuge in nature and was a birder. He was also a fine baritone who sang with the Kansas City and Wichita Operas and in the Konza Quartet; for a time, he was Choir Director at the First United Methodist Church. He shared his love of music with his children and later his grandchildren. A tireless traveler, Jerry showed his children the world, for which they will be eternally grateful. Preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Orleen Reeck, he is survived by his life partner, Stephanie Reeck, of Manhattan, Kansas; his children, Laura Reeck (Steven Farrelly-Jackson) of Meadville, Pennsylvania and Matt Reeck (Jane Yi) of Brooklyn, New York. He is survived by five adoring grandchildren: Nicholas Farrelly-Jackson, Simon Farrelly-Jackson, Isabel Farrelly-Jackson, Sae Ah Reeck, and Boerum Reeck. Joan K. Percy, age 92, of Manhattan, died Wednesday July 7, 2021 at the Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, Kansas. If you ask her many close friends and acquaintances, they all describe her with the same three words; “a True Lady”. Everyone loved Joan, as she gave way more back in return. But Joan’s main love was her immediate family, at one time numbering several dozen. But she also loved so many close friends, and truly cared about anyone she ever met. She was born on December 13, 1928 in Fort Scott, Kansas, the daughter of Clifford Burke and Ruby (Bybee) Burke. Her mother later married Kenneth Abell, of Iola, when Joan was still a young age. Joan considered Kenny her father for all her life, and loved both of her parents dearly. She grew up in Iola, Kansas and graduated with the Iola High School class of 1946. Many of her classmates remained friends for life. She was united in marriage to Robert John Percy, also of Iola, on April 20, 1947. Their marriage was a very loving partnership of 69 years until Robert proceeded her in death in 2016. Joan is proceeded in death by her eldest son, John E. Percy (wife Jennie) of Beaufort, South Carolina. She is survived by her sons James K. Percy (wife Carol) of Americus, KS, and Robert Alan Percy (wife Karen) of Toronto, Canada. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren; Tani and Gwen (Rick), Levi and JoJo (Jim) Caleb and Caitlin (Robert Alan), 10 great grandchildren, brother-in-law Claude Percy, sister-in-law Jeanne Percy, and numerous nieces and nephews. Robert was a career military man, and they relocated 14 times in the first 20 years of marriage due to promotions and reassignments. Joan had the major task of seeing to the needs of the three boys and taking care of the entire households. Iola always served as a temporary home for Joan and the boys between many of the moves, living with both their parents. The family has lived in such places as Hawaii, San Francisco, Boston, New York City, Heilbronn and Heidelberg, Germany. They vacationed and traveled extensively. No matter where she lived, Joan always volunteered her services, whether as a Gray Lady at the hospitals or as a PTA member. She was an avid contract bridge player, and considered quite good by most. Joan loved being involved in numerous associations and clubs, especially doing charity work. Joan and Robert called Manhattan home since 1967, upon his retiring from service. This was the longest they had ever put down roots. They were great friends of Bob and Lillian Sloan, and Joe and Evelyn Murphy. The 3 couples had one adventure after another during their long friendships. Joan was in various clubs and organizations, including the Pilot Club, Bridge Club, The Copers Club, and of course, the infamous Mall Walkers, aka “the Walkie Talkie Coffee Group”. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan. Memorial services for Joan will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday July 15, 2021 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel in Manhattan, with Rev. Ben Duerfeldt officiating. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren; Tani and Gwen (Rick), Levi and JoJo (Jim) Caleb and Caitlin (Robert Alan), 10 great grandchildren, brother-in-law Claude Percy, sister-in-law Jeanne Percy, and numerous nieces and nephews. Robert was a career military man, and they relocated 14 times in the first 20 years of marriage due to promotions and reassignments. Joan had the major task of seeing to the needs of the three boys and taking care of the entire households. Iola always served as a temporary home for Joan and the boys between many of the moves, living with both their parents. The family has lived in such places as Hawaii, San Francisco, Boston, New York City, Heilbronn and Heidelberg, Germany. They vacationed and traveled extensively. No matter where she lived, Joan always volunteered her services, whether as a Gray Lady at the hospitals or as a PTA member. She was an avid contract bridge player, and considered quite good by most. Joan loved being involved in numerous associations and clubs, especially doing charity work. Joan and Robert called Manhattan home since 1967, upon his retiring from service. This was the longest they had ever put down roots. They were great friends of Bob and Lillian Sloan, and Joe and Evelyn Murphy. The 3 couples had one adventure after another during their long friendships. Joan was in various clubs and organizations, including the Pilot Club, Bridge Club, The Copers Club, and of course, the infamous Mall Walkers, aka “the Walkie Talkie Coffee Group”. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan. Memorial services for Joan will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday July 15, 2021 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel in Manhattan, with Rev. Ben Duerfeldt officiating. Inurnment will follow the services at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at Fort Riley in Manhattan. Memorial contributions in memory of Joan are suggested to the Pilot Club of Manhattan or the Good Shepherd Homecare and Hospice House in Manhattan.
