Nancy J. Hunt of Detroit, KS, passed away on August 25, 2023, at her home. Nancy was born on August 8, 1963, in Carroll, Iowa, daughter of Doyle Hunt and Wanda Constable Hunt. Nancy graduated from Glidden-Ralston High School, Glidden, Iowa, in 1981. She attended Cloud County Community College to further her education.

 Nancy was a strong lover of quilting and sewing, gardening, raising chickens and gathering eggs, and loving cats. She loved her family very much, showing her love in many different ways that were unique to each of them. Nancy spent a major portion of her working career in school food service in the area.

Nancy is survived by her father Doyle Hunt (Mary Fairchild) of Glidden, Iowa, and mother Wanda Soutter of Mountain Home, Arkansas. Her family includes partner Ray Heideman of the home, her daughters Bridgette Warnke of Gardner, KS, and Savana Ebel (Daniel) of Junction City, KS, and sons Aaron Warnke (Christine) of Salina, KS and Nicholas Warnke of Scranton, IA, and 5 bonus children. Siblings Mark Hunt of Mountain Home, AR, Peggy (Terry) Heldstab of Junction City, KS and Cynthia (Mark) Pickett of Topeka, KS, and sister-in-law Sheryl (Tom) Lynch of Carroll, IA, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Nancy was preceded in death by a brother Murray Jon (Mike) Hunt and stepfather Richard Soutter. Nancy was a proud grandmother of 10 grandchildren (Tyler, Tristan, Saleen, Lainey, Joseph, Ryan, Aurora, Lucas, Carson, and Emaley) and 12 bonus grandchildren.

Visitation for family and friends will be Sunday, September 3, 2023 from 3:00-5:00 p.m., with a memorial service beginning at 5 p.m. at the Danner Funeral Home, 501 N. Buckeye, Abilene, Kansas. Immediately following the memorial service, a gathering of family and friends will be held at Walt’s Four Seasons Campground, 2500 Mink Road, Abilene, Kansas (exit 281) for food, drinks and reminiscing. The family requests those attending to dress casual as Nancy would have wanted it that way.

Anita Nangene (Doran/Flowers) Allen, age 90, of Ogden, Kansas, passed away Saturday August 26, 2023 at Valley View Senior Life Center in Junction City, Kansas.

She was born on January 16, 1933 in St. Joseph, Missouri. The daughter of Thelma and John Doran, and Darlo (Della)Flowers. She lived in Tama, Iowa where she graduated high school.

After high school, Anita was one of the first women to be accepted into the United States Air Force. She was proud of her service to her country. She was a very patriotic person throughout her life. In addition to her service, she was a member of the Legion for 54 years. Also, she was on The Selective Service Board for 20 years.

She retired from The Iowa State Juvenile Home in 1995. After retirement, she moved to Garwin, Iowa. She lived in Garwin for 23 years. She eventually made her home in Ogden, Kansas.

She enjoyed being a Patriot, traveling, seeing her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Patrick John Anderson, and her sister Barbara.

Anita is survived by her three children: Douglas Anderson and his wife Melinda of Maitland, Florida, Mona Bass and husband (Toot)William Bass of Ogden, Kansas, and Lisa Smith of Gillette, Wyoming; her eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren (and one on the way); and her sister Michele Tiemens of Manchester, Iowa, and brother John Doran and his wife (Susan) of Boone, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday September 6, 2023 at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ogden, with Father Kerry Ninemire as Celebrant. Interment with military honors will follow at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at Fort Riley in Manhattan.

Donna June (Jones) Smith passed away at the Good Shepherd Hospice House on August 25, 2023.

Donna was born on March 19, 1936 in Herrin, Illinois, the daughter of Earl and Pansy Jones. Her dad was a coal miner and they moved to Harco, Illinois, during her grade school years and then back to Herrin for her secondary schooling. At the age of 12 her parents divorced. She and her four sisters lived in the Heights (Govt. Housing). Her mom later married Raymond Serena. While in high school she met the love of her life, Carl Smith. A love that was meant to be since she and Carl were born 3 blocks and 3 weeks apart in Herrin. She was Homecoming Queen and Carl was a captain of the football team. Carl had the honor of crowning her queen. After graduating from Herrin High School, she worked as an office manager at the Norge Factory in Herrin. On March 16, 1957, she and Carl married. Carl entered the Air Force December 1958 as a 2nd Lieutenant. Thus began her twenty-two-year career as a military wife, which included residences primarily in the South East and accompanied tours in Turkey and Okinawa. When Carl retired from the military, he and Donna settled in Manhattan, Kansas. Donna was hired as a teller at 1st National Bank, and later became a branch manager at Landmark National Bank. She retired from the bank after 19 years.

During her lifetime, Donna loved raising her children, doting on members of her family, and giving her time and attention to others. She loved to travel, which included regular vacations to Las Vegas and Branson, where she regularly left the casino with more money than she brought. She was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend to everyone she met.

She is survived by her husband, Carl Smith of Manhattan, KS and daughter Shelley (Smith) Buchanan (husband Mike) of Manhattan, KS. Three grand children: Bryan Carl Smith of Herrin, Illinois, Molly Buchanan (partner Jeremy Kellogg) of Randolph, KS, and Reid Buchanan (wife Sarah) of San Diego, CA. One great-grandson: Gunner Kellogg of Randolph, KS, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved son Bryan; and four sisters Velma Sharpe, Stella Varacalli, Hazel Young, Lois Smith.

We want to thank the staff at Via Christi Hospital and Village for their caring and comfort of Donna.

The family will receive friends from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, September 3rd, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

Steven Clayton Hagenmaier, age 71, of Manhattan, passed away on August 25, 2023 at his home in Manhattan.

He was born January 14, 1952 to his parents Melvin C. and Gladys C. (Bergstrom) Hagenmaier.

Steve grew up on a farm north of Randolph. He attended Randolph schools and graduated from Blue Valley High School In 1970. For many years he worked for a local moving company. After retirement he enjoyed spending time with family, BBQing, bird watching, watching the KC Chiefs and KSU sports, and hanging out with his dog Peppy Jo.

On November 10, 1978 he was married to Mary Ellen Zarger. Mary preceded him in death on December 21, 2022. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his Mother-In-Law Loretta Zarger, a Sister-In-Law Luetta Lake, and a Brother-In-Law Junior Zarger.

Survivors include step sons, Anthony Moss and Scott Moss (Kate) both of Manhattan; children Amy, Shanda and Jason, and seven grandchildren: Melanie, Hannah, Cooper, Angelicia, Dennis, Quiten, and Kyra.

Also surviving are his sibling Ruth Lowe of Shoreline, WA, Joann Zarger of Manhattan, Neil Hagenmaier of Kansas City, KS, Donna Nelson (Dean) of Leonardville, KS and numerous nieces and nephews.

Nick was born in Globe, Arizona on April 8, 1984, the son of Earl Leslie Bennett, of Duncan, OK. and Catherine Ann (Bradford) Bennett, of Manhattan. &nbsp;Nick was a graduate of Herington High School, Herington, KS. &nbsp;He received a Bachelors Degree in Environmental Science and was starting his Masters from the University of Phoenix

Nick is also survived by a daughter, Isabella Adams-Bennett, of Manhattan;&nbsp;a son, Kai Bennett, of&nbsp;Herington; two sisters, Lacey Bennett, of Duncan, OK; &nbsp;Presley Bennett, of Duncan, OK; &nbsp;a brother, Anthony &nbsp;(Josephine) Bennett, of Plano, TX.

Christena Ann Stevenson, 100, of Wamego, Kansas, formerly of St. George, died Sunday, August 27, 2023, at Via Christi Village in Manhattan. &nbsp;She was a long-time resident of the area.

Christena was born on September 14, 1922, in Atchison County, Missouri, the daughter of Clyde and Martha (Johnson) Miller. &nbsp;She attended local grade school and graduated in 1940 from High School in Tarkio, Missouri.

She married Paul Stevenson on August 17, 1941. &nbsp;After 68 years of marriage, Paul preceded her in death on December 4, 2009.

Christena was a homemaker who enjoyed raising her family.&nbsp;

Christena loved to square dance with Paul. &nbsp;They owned a farm in St. George. She was a great cook and was known for her delicious meals and desserts and had the ability to prepare a meal for a large group at a moment’s notice. &nbsp;She was a seamstress and enjoyed all sewing crafts as well as working as a 4-H leader. &nbsp;Christena loved K-State sports, especially basketball. &nbsp; She also enjoyed traveling to see family. &nbsp;One of her favorite pastimes was spending time with friends at the Friendly Cooker. &nbsp;Christena loved to write letters and was the family’s kin keeper. She was a member of the St. George United Methodist Church.

Christena is survived by her children; Larry Stevenson, Topeka, Martha Williams, Clay Center, and Debra Ledet (Mark Mobley), Grapevine, Texas; her grandchildren, Todd Collins (Trish), Clay Center, Chris Collins (Mary), Kansas City, Marnie Clayton (Gene), Manhattan, Lauren Witte (Jantzen) Fort Worth, Texas, and Alyson McDaniel (James), Austin, Texas; her great-grandchildren, Brennan Clayton, Bryan Clayton, and Lucca Witte. &nbsp;In addition to her husband, Paul, Christena was preceded in death by a son, Ron Stevenson, grandsons, Paul Ledet and Mason Ledet and siblings, Alfred Miller, Harold Miller, and Wallace Miller.

A Celebration of Christena’s Life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at St. George United Methodist Church. The family suggests memorial contributions to either the St. George United Methodist Church or Community Care Ministries, Wamego, KS, and those may be sent in care of Campanella and Stewart Funeral Home.

She was a great cook and was known for her delicious meals and desserts and had the ability to prepare a meal for a large group at a moment’s notice. &nbsp;She was a seamstress and enjoyed all sewing crafts as well as working as a 4-H leader. &nbsp;Christena loved K-State sports, especially basketball. &nbsp; She also enjoyed traveling to see family. &nbsp;One of her favorite pastimes was spending time with friends at the Friendly Cooker. &nbsp;Christena loved to write letters and was the family’s kin keeper. She was a member of the St. George United Methodist Church.Christena is survived by her children; Larry Stevenson, Topeka, Martha Williams, Clay Center, and Debra Ledet (Mark Mobley), Grapevine, Texas; her grandchildren, Todd Collins (Trish), Clay Center, Chris Collins (Mary), Kansas City, Marnie Clayton (Gene), Manhattan, Lauren Witte (Jantzen) Fort Worth, Texas, and Alyson McDaniel (James), Austin, Texas; her great-grandchildren, Brennan Clayton, Bryan Clayton, and Lucca Witte. &nbsp;In addition to her husband, Paul, Christena was preceded in death by a son, Ron Stevenson, grandsons, Paul Ledet and Mason Ledet and siblings, Alfred Miller, Harold Miller, and Wallace Miller.A Celebration of Christena’s Life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at St. George United Methodist Church. Malissa Mae Hunt, 68, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away on Thursday (August 24, 2023) in Wamego, Kansas.

Born June 26, 1955 in Manhattan, Kansas, Malissa was the daughter of Hal S. and Leona Mae (Hause) Hunt.

Malissa was a 1973 graduate of St. George High School and attended Manhattan Technical College. In 1979, she began her career at McCall Pattern Company where she worked for 39 years until her retirement in 2018. &nbsp;Malissa then became a para educator for the Wamego School District No. 320 at Central Elementary School until 2021.

Malissa was a member of the Wamego United Methodist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) and the GEMS Genealogy group. Her great joys in life were bowling and camping. &nbsp;Malissa was an avid bowler and was currently serving as an officer for the Kansas Bowling Association. &nbsp;She loved camping, traveling across the country as a member of the Coachman Camping Club and her more recent trips to Branson. &nbsp;Malissa had a special place in her heart for her pets, especially her Siamese cats.

Survivors include three aunts, Lila Flinn of Wamego, KS, Florence Flinn of Manhattan, KS and Marlene Flinn of St. George, KS; many cousins and her camping, bowling and work families.

Malissa was preceded in death by her parents; and several aunts &amp; uncles.

&nbsp;Funeral services will be held Friday, September 1 at 11 a.m. at the Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego with Rev. Alex Rossow officiating. &nbsp;Burial will be in Wamego City Cemetery.

Hermine "Oma" Odle, 80, of Junction City, formerly of the Woodbine, Kansas area passed away on Friday August 25, 2023 at Valley View Senior Life Center.

Oma was born May 30, 1943 in Germany the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gotzel.She was well known in the Woodbine by being "Oma". She owned the Woodbine Cafe. If Oma wasn't fishing she was picking up tin cans on the highway and spending time with her grandchildren. She always thought she could fix it herself and could be found tinkering. Oma was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan. Her hobbies were watching soccer, scratch-off lottery tickets, and playing the slot game at 5th Street Pub. Oma had a big heart and good sense of humor. She would help anyone.In December of 1961, she married Alton Ray Odle. They later divorced in 1981.

Survivors include one son, Michael Odle and his wife Kathy of Abilene, Kansas; three daughters, Iwonne Schardein and her husband Edward of Herington, Kansas, Barbara Gott of Paragould, Arkansas and Debora Douthit of Stillwater, Oklahoma; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Alois Gotzel and one sister, Inge Flachs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He was born on February 19, 1999, to Jeffrey and Katheryn (White) Staines in Knoxville, TN. He graduated from Lejeune High School, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina in 2017. Pacey was an avid outdoorsman, he loved spending time outdoors fishing, hunting, and spending time with family and friends. After high school, he enlisted and served honorably in the U.S. Army as a Combat Engineer (12B).While stationed on Fort Riley, Kansas, he met his loving wife Alexis. They were married on March 19, 2019, in Riley County. Together they shared three children. Pacey shared his love of the outdoors with his children; exploring the vast outdoors from coast to coast. He dreamed of taking his family across the world to see where he grew up as a child, one of those places being Okinawa, Japan.Pacey devoted a majority of his time to the Lord. His spirituality was inspirational to everyone around him. He taught the word of God to his children, family, and friends. He prioritized his family by being a devoted and loving husband, father, son, and brother. His contagious smile lit up the room the moment he entered, because of that, he never met a stranger. People he met always knew he was a man of merit and dependability.

He is survived by his loving wife, Alexis (Huante) Staines; two daughters, Elliana and Aurora; one son, Wyatt; parents, Jeffrey and Katheryn of North Carolina; one brother, Hunter (Angel) Staines of North Carolina; one sister, Hannah of North Carolina and a host of other family and friends.

Norvilla Marie Baldwin, affectionately known as Sis Norvilla, passed away on August 18, 2023, in Junction City, Kansas, at the age of 64. She was born on August 29, 1958, in St. Louis, Missouri, to the late Norville Jones and Delores Flanigan. She was the oldest of five children. Norvilla will be remembered as a loving mother, devoted sister, and cherished grandmother.

Norvilla is survived by her children and oldest twins, Joshua D. Flanigan (Christina) and Angela M. Flanigan, her son Jarrell K. N. Baldwin, and her youngest twins, Myra E. N. Baldwin (Victor Hammond) and Mario D. N. Baldwin. She will also be deeply missed by her 27 grandchildren, Gabriel, Kayla, Annorah, Anne Marie, Joshua II, Joshua III, Kaja, Nevaeh, Deserea, Jasmine, Mya, Jayden, Audreyanna, Adalynn, Jordin, Christopher, Cayden, Rowan, Robert, Mazequin, Victor, Saheim, Khayri, DeCarlos, Brielle, Winter, and her sisters Cozella D. Flanigan and Kim Y. Flanigan.Norvilla's grandparents, Minne Rae Flanigan and Deathers Flanigan, her parents Norville Jones and Delores Flanigan, her brother Norville Harold Jones Jr "Pee Wee," her youngest sister Sonja Lynn Jones, and her granddaughter Victoriah Nicole Hammond preceded her in death.

Norvilla attended Soldan High School before enlisting in the Women Army Corps. Norvilla decided to reenlist and continued to proudly serve her country in the United States Army. During her military service from 1977 to 1992, Norvilla demonstrated an unwavering dedication and commitment to her country. Her military service was a testament to her courage and selflessness. She served honorably and is a Gulf War Veteran. Norvilla separated from the Army in Fort Riley, Kansas and made Junction City her home.Upon separating from the military Norvilla decided to pursue higher education at Barton Community College, and Upper Iowa University, Norvilla held various civil positions in and around Fort Riley to support the Soldiers and their families. In 2015 she retired from the Office of Personnel Management giving the Department of Defense a total of 30 years before continuing her lifelong goal of earning her doctoral degree. Norvilla attended Walden University where she earned her Doctorate in Cybersecurity. She played the violin and had a passion for sports, playing tennis, basketball and track. She was a lifelong learner and valued education.Norvilla found solace and inspiration in her faith. She worshipped at 5th and Adams Pentecostal Church and was a member of the “Precious Pearls” ministry. Norvilla attended bible study, Sunday school, tent revivals faithfully and was baptized and filled with the Holy Ghost and accepted Christ as her lord and savior. Norvilla continued to grow in Christ and was led to Living Word International Ministries where she supported the hospitality committee, ABLAZE and Women of Destiny. Norvilla was a volunteer administrative assistant and worked alongside Pastor Nicole and Sister Ducksworth in assisting with administrative affairs for Living Word. She loved her church family and helped wherever she could. Novilla’s spiritual journey was an integral part of her life.Norvilla Marie Baldwin's memory will forever be treasured by her family and friends. Her legacy of love, resilience, kindness and faith will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Larry served in the united states army. Larry spent most of his life working as a parts manager at various John Deere dealerships in Kansas. Many times customers would argue with Larry that the parts he gave them were not correct but they never came back to exchange them. Larry did not need a computer to look up parts he knew them in his memory.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Duane Schroeder. Larry is survived by his son Jeff Schroeder of Chapman, his sisters Phyllis Hogg of Lyons, and Janice O’Brian of Cottonwood Falls, Kansas as well as 8 Grandchildren .

Larry Lee Schroeder

Mark Douglas Naughton of Manhattan, KS, passed away at the age of 61,following a sudden illness on Monday August 21, 2023.

Mark was born on November 20, 1961 to Gary and Mary Naughton. He was the oldest of four boys. The family moved to Manhattan in 1969. In 1985, Mark married Cynthia (Brownell) Naughton. They had been married for 38 years and have three children: Killian, Gunnar and Tannan. They also have seven grandchildren Charlie, Shiloh, Zoey, Brooklyn, Elise, Henry and Olivia.

Mark graduated from Manhattan High School in 1980, and graduated from Manhattan Christian College with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Ethics in 2000. He was very active with the Boy Scouts, earning his Eagle Scout Badge and serving as Scout Master in later years.

Mark grew up playing Army with his brothers, often reenacting WW2 battles in the acreage of their rural home. He was a patriot and fulfilled his lifelong dream of serving his country. He joined the Kansas Army National Guard at the age of 17. He interservice transferred to become a United States Marine. After 4 years in the Marine Corps, he went back to the Kansas Army National Guard, later serving in the Army Reserves as well. He served in numerous roles including Infantryman, Tanker, Master Gunner, Recruiter, Ammunition Specialist, Intel Analyst, Logistics Manager, Tank Driver, Loader, Gunner, Tank Commander, Platoon Sergeant, M1A1 Master Gunner and Tank Company First Sergeant. While serving, he earned the Expert Infantry Badge, Jungle Expert Badge, Air Assault Badge, and the M1A1 Master Gunner Badge. He also received a US Cavalry Association Order of Saint George Bronze Medallion. While a Recruiter, he earned the Gold Badge, all 3 Sapphire Stars, a Recruiter Ring and the Glen E. Morrel Award. His combined military service is over 27 years, and he retired as a First Sergeant. He was honorably discharged in 2006. He earned a Bronze Star with “V” device for Valor in 1983 while serving as a Scout Sniper in Grenada in support of Operation Urgent Fury. He had no knowledge of the award until it was presented to him in 2021. In his characteristic humility, he kept the award private.

After he retired from the Army, he just couldn’t step away from the military, so he worked on Fort Riley as a contractor. At the time of his death, he was working as Project Manager for Valiant Integrated Services, training troops at the range, tank, helicopter and military vehicle simulators. He was set to retire in December of 2023.

Mark was a soft-spoken man of few words. He was quick-witted and had a dry sense of humor. He could make a pun out of anything. His presence demanded authority, yet his demeanor made him loved and admired by all. He dominated in the workplace and excelled in everything he attempted including art, creative writing, mechanics, vehicle restoration, military, leadership, animal care, public speaking, education, and most of all—fatherhood and grand-fatherhood. As a father, he supported his kids in every endeavor. He always encouraged and complimented his children which helped build their self-confidence and inspired his oldest two children to join the military as well. His grandchildren adored him, especially when he read them stories with his funny voices.

Mark was very loving, generous and supportive of his wife Cynthia. He took care of her and was a fun, kind companion. He helped her build her business and was a constant source of inspiration and encouragement for her.

He was the President of a Sons of the American Revolution Chapter, an avid Civil War Reenactor and Living Historian. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans Jeep Club, and the Military Veterans Motorcycle Club.

Mark leaves behind a multitude of loved ones who are deeply grieving his loss. He is survived by his 2016 Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail Classic; His wife Cynthia; His three children and their spouses: Justin and Killian Cline, Gunnar and Kayla Naughton, Mitchell and Tannan Millsap. He leaves behind 6 grandchildren: Charlie, Zoey, Elise and Olivia Millsap, and Shiloh and Henry Cline. He is also survived by his Mother and Step-father Mary and Wesley Cosby, his step-mother Barbara Naughton, his three brothers and their wives Dave &amp; Charlotte, Joe &amp; Kim, and John Alex and Judy Naughton. Many cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

He is preceded in death by his father Gary Naughton and his granddaughter Brooklyn Cline.

Funeral services will be held at Yorgesen Malone Londeen Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 30, 2023 at 9:30 a.m. There will be graveside services following the funeral at KS Veteran’s Cemetery at Fort Riley.

He was the oldest of four boys. The family moved to Manhattan in 1969. In 1985, Mark married Cynthia (Brownell) Naughton. They had been married for 38 years and have three children: Killian, Gunnar and Tannan. They also have seven grandchildren Charlie, Shiloh, Zoey, Brooklyn, Elise, Henry and Olivia.Mark graduated from Manhattan High School in 1980, and graduated from Manhattan Christian College with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Ethics in 2000. He was very active with the Boy Scouts, earning his Eagle Scout Badge and serving as Scout Master in later years.Mark grew up playing Army with his brothers, often reenacting WW2 battles in the acreage of their rural home. He was a patriot and fulfilled his lifelong dream of serving his country. He joined the Kansas Army National Guard at the age of 17. He interservice transferred to become a United States Marine. After 4 years in the Marine Corps, he went back to the Kansas Army National Guard, later serving in the Army Reserves as well. He served in numerous roles including Infantryman, Tanker, Master Gunner, Recruiter, Ammunition Specialist, Intel Analyst, Logistics Manager, Tank Driver, Loader, Gunner, Tank Commander, Platoon Sergeant, M1A1 Master Gunner and Tank Company First Sergeant. While serving, he earned the Expert Infantry Badge, Jungle Expert Badge, Air Assault Badge, and the M1A1 Master Gunner Badge. He also received a US Cavalry Association Order of Saint George Bronze Medallion. While a Recruiter, he earned the Gold Badge, all 3 Sapphire Stars, a Recruiter Ring and the Glen E. Morrel Award. His combined military service is over 27 years, and he retired as a First Sergeant. He was honorably discharged in 2006. He earned a Bronze Star with “V” device for Valor in 1983 while serving as a Scout Sniper in Grenada in support of Operation Urgent Fury. He had no knowledge of the award until it was presented to him in 2021. In his characteristic humility, he kept the award private.After he retired from the Army, he just couldn’t step away from the military, so he worked on Fort Riley as a contractor. At the time of his death, he was working as Project Manager for Valiant Integrated Services, training troops at the range, tank, helicopter and military vehicle simulators. He was set to retire in December of 2023.Mark was a soft-spoken man of few words. He was quick-witted and had a dry sense of humor. He could make a pun out of anything. Mark Douglas Naughton

Delmar Thomas Fairchild, age 66, of Manhattan, KS, died August 22, 2023, at St. Luke’s Hospice in Kansas City, Missouri.

He was born January 7, 1957, in Manhattan, the son of Reece and Phyllis Delores (Lewis) Fairchild. The family lived in Burnsville, NC, for several years, returning to Manhattan in 1971, when Delmar began high school.

Delmar worked for the City of Manhattan in Public Works from 1974 until his retirement in 2009, a total of 35 years. Delmar was a member of the American Water Works Association, and had received a Certificate of Appreciation from the League of Kansas Municipalities for loyal and dedicated service. Delmar always took great care of his crew and every Christmas would give them a turkey or ham for their holiday gathering.

He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, fishing, grilling with family and friends and an ice-cold beer. Delmar was always willing to help those that were in need and was even willing to open his home for a meal or to take a hot shower. He was talented with his hands, resourceful and had a relentless work ethic. Delmar also had an ornery side that made gatherings and holidays fun – especially the 4th of Julys

Survivors include his companion of 24 years Juli Welliver of the home; two children: Damon Fairchild and his wife Raven and Danielle Fairchild all of Manhattan; Juli’s three sons: Zachary Tilton of Manhattan, Chad Tilton and his wife Ashley of Wamego, and Skyler Tilton of Colorado Springs, CO; three siblings: Donna Hensley of Mayetta, KS, Delores Mulanax of Mayetta, KS, and Denise Fairchild of Manhattan; six grandchildren: Avery Torrey (Nicole), Reece, Jude and Zane Fairchild, Jaxen and Stella Rose Tilton; and nine nieces and nephews.

Delmar was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Douglas and Dusti Fairchild.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 31st, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dennis Ackerman officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 30th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

Jo Janet Irene Oberg joined her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ in heaven on August 11, 2023. A long-time resident of Clay Center, Kansas, she died peacefully in Concordia, Kansas 2 months after celebrating her 90th birthday. &nbsp;

Jo was born June 17, 1933, to Chester W. and Beatrice Berndette (Betty) Finley Oberg in Clay Center. &nbsp;As a young girl, Jo stood out as an entrepreneur and trailblazer from the beginning. She raised rabbits and chickens and sold them to the grocery store, and she delivered newspapers around town from her motor scooter as a paper girl, a position usually held by boys. &nbsp;Fascinated by her dad’s Navy “Blue Jacket Manual,” she learned about Navy signal flags, medical care procedures, and the “fireman’s carry” and then gathered the other neighborhood children to train them.

After graduating from CCHS in Clay Center, Jo enrolled at Kansas State University in 1951 and graduated with a BS in Psychology in 1955. &nbsp;Following in her father’s footsteps, she enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January 1957, retiring 20 years later in 1977.

Jo was proud of her Navy career as an officer where she reached the level of Lieutenant Commander and served in several locations around the U.S. including Virginia, Hawaii, Washington, D.C., California, and South Carolina. Some highlights of her time in the Navy included being stationed in Hawaii on Statehood Day in 1959 and acting as Company Commander of the only women’s unit marching in President John F. Kennedy’s funeral procession. &nbsp;Jo played an instrumental role in setting up “Operation Homecoming,” a program to reunite returning Vietnam prisoners of war with their families at the end of the war, for which she received an award given to her personally by former POW Jeremiah Denton. &nbsp;Jo was a leader and worked to improve the status of women in the military. &nbsp;At every location during her Navy years, she made lifelong friends and took advantage of seeing the sights and entertaining her friends. She was an avid swimmer, runner, and mountain climber.

In addition to Jo’s Navy duties, she had a passionate interest in the space program. She attended NASA-sponsored programs and aeronautics classes in various cities at her own expense on her own time. &nbsp;She travelled to the John F. Kennedy Space Center to witness the launchings of Apollo IX and XI in the 1960s, two of the highlights of her life. &nbsp;Apollo XI was the mission that landed the first men on the moon.

Following her retirement from the Navy in 1977 and her mother’s passing in 1978, Jo moved back to Clay Center and bought a home at 736 Franklin Street. &nbsp;She worked from 1979-1986 at Union State bank as the Assistant to the President. &nbsp;The years of 1978 and 1979 were life-changing for Jo as she adjusted from Navy life to life back in her hometown. She credited her friend Verna Paronto with opening her eyes to Jesus and the Bible. On December 23, 1978 she was born again and dedicated her life to Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior.

Jo became active in the Evangelical Covenant Church of Clay Center in 1979 at a time when they were struggling with an aging and declining membership. &nbsp;She along with many others actively prayed and worked to recruit young families with children to become members. They were very successful as is evidenced by the thriving church and strong youth program today.

Her strong faith and desire to educate others about Jesus led her to OMS International, a worldwide missionary organization, and specifically to Taiwan. In 1986, she left her bank position in Clay Center to work for OMS, eventually creating Jo Oberg Ministries, where she was an Honorary and Associate Missionary for 13 years. &nbsp;During those years she served in various places such as Tainan, Taichung, and Chiayi cities. She met Grace Chang at that time, and they traveled and spread the Word of God together. &nbsp;They made a memorable journey to distribute Bibles through mainland China at a time when Christianity was forbidden there and practiced strictly underground.

In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s in addition to spending time periodically in Taiwan, Jo became a Union State Bank director and the manager of the Oberg farms around Clay County. &nbsp;She dedicated her time increasingly to learning the farming business and getting to know the local farmers. She hosted numerous “Farm Meetings” for the Oberg relatives. Thanks to Jo, these meetings not only entailed farm business but also served as valuable family reunions and brought the Oberg cousins and second cousins together after being scattered around the country for many years.

Jo’s connection with Union State Bank was very important to her, as many who knew her may remember from the Union State Bank hat and coat she often wore. &nbsp;Her great-grandfather Eric Swenson, USB Bank President at the time, died on June 18, 1933, one day after Jo was born. &nbsp;She felt strongly that she was born into the legacy left by Eric Swenson to safeguard the bank throughout her lifetime, and she dedicated much time and effort to the business of Union State Bank, both as an employee and as a member of the Board of Directors for many years.

As Jo’s friends and elderly relatives experienced health issues over the years, Jo often spent many hours at their sides caring for them and offering support to their families. She maintained a deep love for the people of both Taiwan and Clay Center for the rest of her life. &nbsp;She and Grace Chang divided their time between Taiwan and Kansas until Jo could no longer travel to Taiwan, and Grace then made multiple visits to Jo.

Jo will be remembered fondly for her strong faith, for her stubborn independence, and for her sense of humor which remained with her to the end. &nbsp;She was truly one-of-a-kind and left an impression on everyone who met her.

Jo was preceded in death by her parents, two older sisters, Franc Harriett and Florence Hope Schwab, step-brother Phil Donley, and long-time friend Mary Petee. &nbsp;

She is survived by younger sister, Pamela June (Oberg) Sharp (John) of Albuquerque NM, dear friend Grace Chang of Tainan, Taiwan, niece Linda (Schwab) Messmer (Greg) of Lakewood, CO, niece Melodie (Schwab) Marine (Larry) of Clearwater FL, nephew Scott Schwab (Marcy) of Heartland, TX, niece Julie (Sharp) Allen (Michael) of Evanston IL, niece Melissa (Sharp) Freymann (John) of Severna Park, MD, nephew Jeffrey Sharp (Jennifer) of Albuquerque, NM, niece Christie (Sharp) Ochoa (John) of Downers Grove, IL, and nephew Robert Sharp of Chicago, IL, step-mother Reta Oberg of Wichita, KS, step-brothers Ed, P. Kelley and Rodger Donley.

Her many dear friends, neighbors, and the Evangelical Covenant Church community meant the world to her.

Darlene Dorothy Obenland, 91 died August 21, 2023, in Clay Center, KS. &nbsp;She was born on May 23, 1932, in Clifton, the daughter of Arthur and Clara (Damman) Dittmer. &nbsp;Darlene was raised in the Clifton community. &nbsp;She married Donald Obenland on December 14, 1958. &nbsp;They made their home in Clay Center where they raised their family and were foster parents for many children. &nbsp;Don preceded her in death on February 26, 2020. &nbsp;Darlene was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, American Legion Auxiliary and served as a Cub Scout leader. &nbsp;She was also preceded in death by her parents and a stepson, Doug Obenland.

Jesse S. Anguiano, 91 of Abilene passed away August 17, 2023. He was born December 26, 1931 in Manchester, Kansas the son of Sebriano and Labrada (Compos) Anguiano. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1952, serving on the Radar Destroyer. He was honorably discharged in 1956. On August 9, 1958 he was united in marriage to Mary Gil Anguiano. He was a member of the Eagles Men’s Group; VFW; and St. Andrew’s Catholic Church. Jesse worked for the Abilene COOP.

 He is survived by his children: Anthony (Karen) Anguiano of Wichita; Marc (Kristi) Anguiano of Abilene; and Jon Anguiano of Abilene. Grandchildren: Brittany, Austin and Caleb (Sam) Anguiano of Wichita; Alyshia (Zach) Shelton of Littleton, Colorado; Joshua (Leah) Anguiano of Salina; Matthew (Megan) Anguiano of Topeka; Michael, Logan, and Megan Anguiano of Abilene. Great-Grandchildren: Kadence, Jesse, Lettie, Kyson, and Slade. One brother, John (Judy) Anguiano of Abilene and one sister Mary Margaret Randall of Abilene. Donald Dale Morton, died August 16, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan. Don was born on May 20, 1944, in Colby, KS, to Dale and Ruth Morton of Goodland, KS.

Don was a life-long Kansas resident who was athletic, competitive and hard working. Don enjoyed coaching baseball and loved being a sporting goods salesman. He developed many lasting friendships with customers and business associates throughout the years.

Don is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Susan; sister Marilyn; son Kolin; daughter Kendra; and two grandsons, Kamden and Kooper.

Donald Dale Morton

Dwight “Tony” Anthony Hamilton, age 67, of Manhattan, KS died Sunday, August 13, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi in Manhattan.&nbsp;

He was born in New London, Ohio, the son of Albert Hamilton and Juanita Hamilton Akers. Dwight grew up in New London, Ohio, and attended Mapleton High School. He graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science in Sociology and Criminal Justice.&nbsp;

Dwight served his country in the Army for 4 years. He was a jack-of-all-trades and later became a handyman, owning his own businesses off and on. He was also a great car salesman throughout the years. He enjoyed working with his hands and was an avid sports fan, especially Kansas State University and the Kansas City Chiefs. In his earlier years, he loved to cruise the back roads on his motorcycle. Dwight was known as a free spirit; he would give you the shirt off his back and loved helping people. He will be missed by all of those whom he called a friend and family.

Dwight is survived by his son; Dustin W. Hamilton, Daughter; Tina M. Clark, Brothers; Ronald Hamilton, Buddy Hamilton, and Bo Hamilton, Sisters; Pamela James Gardner, Mary A. Vonberhren, Elizabeth Ives, and his Grandchildren; Madilynn Hamilton, and Sawyer Clark.

A celebration of life will be held with Military Honors at the Veterans Cemetery in Manhattan, KS on October 23, 2023, at 11:00 a.m.

Betty K. Klaverweiden, 95 of Salisbury went to her Heavenly Home on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on October 3, 1927 in Mardela Springs a daughter of the late Elmer and Eva Donoho Cheezum.

Betty met and married Jesse Klaverweiden and together they raised four children and farmed together hand in hand for many years. They raised pigs, a variety of crops and laying hens. She was a wonderful cook and her homemade dumplings were a family favorite. She always remembered each family member’s favorite dish and would make it for them when they came to visit. She always knew how to make others feel loved and had a smile for everyone she met. Betty was the oldest member of Athol Baptist Church where she attended her entire life.

She is survived by her children, Beverly Lowe (Edwin) of Delmar, Bruce Klaverweiden (Nancy) of Kansas, and Brenda New (Chad) of Florida; grandchildren, Stephen Cropper, Jason Cropper, Kim Dodt, David Warren, Renee Warren, Katie Klaverweiden, and Heidi Klaverweiden; six great grandchildren; ten great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and sister by marriage, Irene Gravenor.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband Jesse Klaverweiden; a daughter, Bonnie Cropper; and siblings, Raymond Cheezum, Weldon Cheezum, Iva Green, Virginia Phillips, and Naomi Gambrill.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11am to Noon on Saturday, August 26, 2023 at Short Funeral Home in Delmar. The funeral service will begin at Noon on Saturday. Interment will follow at Mardela Cemetery. The family requests that those attending the service please wear a mask.

Betty Klaverweiden

Father Melvin Long was born August 7, 1940, in New Almelo. He died on Thursday, August 17, 2023.

Father Long’s parents were Andrew and Regina (Otter) Long. He attended grade school at St. John’s in Beloit, graduated from St. Francis Seminary High School in Victoria, St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minnesota, as well as the American Theological Seminary at University of Louvain in Belgium.

He was ordained June 18, 1966, at St. John the Baptist in Beloit by Bishop Cyril Vogel.

One of the most notable accomplishments during Father Long’s ministry was founding St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Salina in 1981. Father Long led the project, building the parish from the ground up. The parish today is served by Father Keith Weber and has 684 families as regular parishioners. As the parish was being built, Father Long celebrated Mass in some very interesting places, including the movie theater!

Father Long’s priestly ministry included teaching positions at Marymount College, Bethany College and Cloud County Community College, but he was also called to minister in Europe. Father Long spent his seminary years in Belgium at the American Theological Seminary at University of Louvain. After his ordination, he was called back to Belgium to serve as a faculty member in 1973 and later served as leadership in the 1990s.

When Father Long retired in 2002, he moved to California due to health complications. However, his priestly ministry did not stop there. He filled in at parishes across the country so that other priests could take extended sabbaticals. He also was a part of the “Apostleship of the Sea of the United States of America” and did some cruise ship ministry for several years.

In the May 2016 issue of The Register, Father Long stated, “I love ministry, and I love people. That’s why I’ve continued (ministering) beyond retirement on a regular basis.”&nbsp; He also fondly recalled the many friendships he still maintained from his years serving in the Diocese of Salina.

During his time in Diocese of Salina, Father Long’s assignments were as follows:

1966-68: Parochial vicar at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Salina

1968-70: Parochial vicar at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Concordia

1970-73: Professor and chaplain at Marymount College in Salina

1978-80: Pastor at St. Boniface Parish in Tipton and St. Mary Parish in Downs

1980: Director of the Office of Diocesan Planning in Salina
