Jean Garvey, 70, Junction City, Kansas, died Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at her home in Junction City. Cremation will take place. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Nebraska. Jean graduated from Mercy High School in 1971 in Omaha, Nebraska where she grew up. Later, she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Social Studies in 1978, from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Her first teaching assignment was in Ainsworth, Nebraska from 1978 to 1980. She began her service as a Reading Specialist at Junction City High School in August 1982, after receiving a Master's Degree of Reading that same year from UNO. She later moved to the History Department of the high school. For 37 years, she was dedicated to the teaching profession at JCHS, until her retirement in May 2019. During those many years, Jean was an active member of the Junction City Education Association and also served on the Board of Directors. In 2002, she was a nominee for Master Teacher; in 2004, she traveled to China as a Fulbright Scholar. As well as serving as a KSU consultant for Social Studies teachers, Jean mentored many student teachers over 25 years. The passion of her teaching career was as an Advanced Placement History teacher. She was an educator who met students where they were, scaffolding skills for them to access content to find success. In the 1980s, Jean was a cheerleading coach and also sponsored J Pep. She served as the chair of the Social Studies Department. Her contributions to the profession included not only teaching but also working on the School Improvement Team, the Student Assistance Team, and the Reading Committee. She belonged to the International Reading Association. A longtime fellow Social Studies teacher Jud Lebo said, "Jean was a great role model and mentor as she left such an impactful impression on colleagues and students. I have not met a greater beacon of professionalism, wisdom, commitment, and compassion in my life." Outside of her profession, early on, Jean and her sister Joan were "Kennedy Girls" for the Robert Kennedy 1968 Presidential Campaign. She loved politics, especially educated debates. Jean was a seeker of social justice in the area especially of women's rights admiring Ida B. Wells, an early leader of the Civil Rights Movement. Jean was an aficionado of Americana and loved Native American art and jewelry. In her reserved, respectful, engaged manner, Jean brought a richness to the Junction City High School Community and beyond. Survivors include one sister, Joan Garvey of Omaha, Nebraska; one brother, Paul Garvey of Omaha, Nebraska; four nephews and three nieces; eight great-nieces and nephews. Sharon Kay Oliver, 82, of Wamego, Kansas, died Saturday, August 12, 2023, at her home, following a lengthy illness. &nbsp;She was a long-time resident of the Wamego area.

Sharon was born on November 11, 1940, in Superior, Nebraska, the daughter of Glenn LeRoy and Dora Mae (Knigge) Hiatt. &nbsp;She attended local grade school and graduated in 1958 from Superior High School. Sharon married Carl Gene Oliver, Sr. on October 12, 1958, in Superior. They were blessed with three children, Carl Jr., Kayla and Linda. &nbsp; After nearly 65 years of a wonderful life together, Carl survives at their home.

Upon high school graduation, Sharon assumed the duties as head accountant for the local J.C. Penney store. &nbsp;She later operated a daycare center in Manhattan, Kansas while her children were young. &nbsp;She worked for H&amp;R Block in Manhattan for two years and then purchased the H&amp;R Block Tax franchise in Wamego, Kansas in 1971. &nbsp;Sharon owned and operated the business for 32 years. &nbsp;After selling the business, she continued to work for H&amp;R Block for 19 years. &nbsp;Along with the tax office, she also operated an accounting service for small businesses. &nbsp;In addition, she served as treasurer for the First Presbyterian Church of Wamego for several years.

Sharon was first and foremost a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and loved her family dearly. She loved to sew, and she made her grandchildren Halloween costumes, quilts, and Christmas decorations. Her family also called upon her for all their mending. &nbsp;Sharon enjoyed cooking for big family dinners and there was always a request for her to make malts, butterfinger balls, and her famous snack mix. Christmas was her favorite holiday. &nbsp;Sharon and Carl attended all their grandchildren’s activities religiously, sometimes driving between more than one event in a day. &nbsp;She followed her mother’s tradition of buying a pizza for each home run that was hit. Easter egg hunts were another fun time for the family. &nbsp;She would hide as many as 300 eggs, not only for the little ones, but the older ones too. Sharon spent many hours on the computer researching family history. &nbsp;Genealogy was her favorite pastime. &nbsp;Sharon was always ready to travel and due to her love of our country, Washington D.C. was her favorite place to visit. &nbsp;New York and Broadway plays were another favorite for Sharon. &nbsp;She enjoyed bank sponsored bus tours with friends across the USA. &nbsp;She also enjoyed playing cards and dominos with friends, but most of all, she loved spending time with her family. &nbsp;She was thrilled when she had a house full of company, whether it was planned or spur of the moment.

On Christmas eve in 2018, Sharon was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma Cancer. &nbsp;That day Carl became her caregiver, and their life was changed forever. &nbsp;Sharon’s goal was always to live to a hundred. &nbsp;Even though her illness would not allow that, she never let this disease get the best of her. &nbsp;She fought to the end.

Ronald Herbert Abitz, 72, of Westmoreland, Kansas, died Friday, August 11, 2023, at University of Kansas Health Center, St. Francis Campus, in Topeka. &nbsp; He was a life-long member of the area.

Ron was born on August 31, 1950, in Onaga, Kansas, the son of Herbert F. and Adelina (Honig) Abitz. &nbsp;He attended Wheaton grade school and graduated from Onaga High School in 1968. &nbsp;He then attended Pittsburg State University, where he played on the school’s football team, and then he attended Manhattan Technical College.

Ron was a farmer and a stockman, working on the family farm most of his adult life. &nbsp;He also owned and operated Ron’s Bar and Grill in Onaga for several years. &nbsp;He loved to cook and was especially known for his brisket and ham gravy. &nbsp;Ron had his own secret process for his brisket, and it was a secret that died with him. &nbsp;He enjoyed hunting and did guided hunting trips and going fishing. &nbsp;Going to the Casino was a favorite pastime for Ron, He had several different coffee spots in Westmoreland and Onaga to sit and visit with friends.&nbsp;

Ron had a reputation of being ornery, but also was an active and loving grandfather and foster-grandfather to more than twenty-five foster children.

Ron married Barbara Ann Smith on June 15, 1979. &nbsp;Following forty-four years of life together, she survives at their home.

Ron is also survived by his sons; Marcus Abitz (Jordan), of Wheaton, and Joe LeBlanc (Staci) of Westmoreland, his grandchildren, Jacie LeBlanc, Elizabeth Abitz, Charlotte Abitz, and Silas Abitz; and his brother Lee Abitz (Barbara), Emmett. &nbsp;Ron was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Jerry.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am, Monday, August 21, 2023, at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Wheaton, Kansas. &nbsp;Reverend Terry DeGiovanni will be officiating. &nbsp;Burial will follow in St. Luke Lutheran North Cemetery. &nbsp;

Nancy Jo Steel, age 73 of Riley, passed away Thursday, August 10, 2023 at her residence.

She was born on May 12, 1950 in Blue Rapids, the daughter of Leroy Bert and Gertrude Aldena (Schreiner) Sutton.

On December 3, 1966 she married Marvin Lee Steel in the Blue Rapids United Methodist Church.

Nancy worked as a CNA and in the laundry department at the Leonardville Nursing Home and at the Calico Inn as a waitress and cook.&nbsp; She also helped Marvin with bridge construction.&nbsp; She was very sociable and a member of the Eagles and Moose Lodges.&nbsp; She enjoyed doing anything artistic.

She is survived by her husband, Marvin Steel of Riley; two daughters, Brenda Steel Marshall and husband Frank of Rowlett, Texas and Giggit Rena’ Peterson of Branson, Missouri; three grandchildren, Nicole Myers, Brooke Myers and Franklin Marshall, and one great grandson, Leon Myers.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Patsy Ann Sutton and one brother, Richard Sutton.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. Sunday, August 13, 2023 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 14, 2023 in the Riley Cemetery with Pastor Kevin Larson officiating.

John Patrick Sullivan Sr., loving husband, father, and Grandpa (Paw Paw), ended his suffering and left this life on August 6, 2023, at the age of 73. He passed in his home with his wife, Linda of 43 years by his side. He is survived by his wife Linda, of the home; three sons, Douglas Sullivan and wife Carol of Hayes, VA, David Sullivan and wife Michelle of Garden City, MO and John Sullivan Jr. of Saint Joseph, MO; three daughters, Melinda Smelley and husband Shannon, DeAnn Widener and husband James both of Junction City, KS, and Tina Elliott and husband Bart of St. Robert, MO; 60 grandchildren, 69 great grandchildren, and 1 great great-grandchild. John was preceded in death by his mom, Josephine Enos; sister, Michelle Sullivan; daughter, Mary Jane Foxworth; two grandsons, Ryan Knorr and Red Morgan; son-in-law, SFC Gregory Hicks and daughter-in-law Patricia Sullivan. John joined the Army in 1973, and was stationed at Fort Riley, KS. He served in the tail end of the Vietnam War, one year in Korea and Desert Storm. Other than his deployments, he was stationed at Fort Riley, KS, his entire Army career until he retired in May 1991. After his retirement from the Army, John worked for the State of Kansas for a brief time before becoming a truck driver until his health wouldn’t allow him to work anymore. John was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Enjoyed camping, fishing and anything that involved his family. He was fun, loving, ornery, spontaneous man, who spoke his mind. You never knew what to expect him to do or say next or whether it was going to make you embarrassed, angry, cry or laugh (mostly we laughed). He was a stern father and prepared his children well for the world and mellowed when the grandkids came along. By the time the greats started coming, they had paw paw wrapped around their little fingers. Services will be held at Johnson Funeral Home in Junction City, KS, Monday, August 14, 2023, at 11:30 a.m., with a procession to Kansas Veterans Cemetery, Manhattan, KS. Immediately following will be a Celebration of Life at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 210 E 10th, Junction City, KS.

John was preceded in death by his mom, Josephine Enos; sister, Michelle Sullivan; daughter, Mary Jane Foxworth; two grandsons, Ryan Knorr and Red Morgan; son-in-law, SFC Gregory Hicks and daughter-in-law Patricia Sullivan. John joined the Army in 1973, and was stationed at Fort Riley, KS. He served in the tail end of the Vietnam War, one year in Korea and Desert Storm. Other than his deployments, he was stationed at Fort Riley, KS, his entire Army career until he retired in May 1991. After his retirement from the Army, John worked for the State of Kansas for a brief time before becoming a truck driver until his health wouldn’t allow him to work anymore. John was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Enjoyed camping, fishing and anything that involved his family. He was fun, loving, ornery, spontaneous man, who spoke his mind. You never knew what to expect him to do or say next or whether it was going to make you embarrassed, angry, cry or laugh (mostly we laughed). He was a stern father and prepared his children well for the world and mellowed when the grandkids came along. By the time the greats started coming, they had paw paw wrapped around their little fingers. Services will be held at Johnson Funeral Home in Junction City, KS, Monday, August 14, 2023, at 11:30 a.m., with a procession to Kansas Veterans Cemetery, Manhattan, KS. Immediately following will be a Celebration of Life at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 210 E 10th, Junction City, KS.

SSG(Ret) John P. Sullivan, Sr.

Edwin C. Lindly, age 101, died August 12, 2023, at Meadowlark Hills in Manhattan.

He was born October 15, 1921 in Madill, Oklahoma to E.C. Lindly and Hattie Jane (Vaden) Lindly. He

grew up in Stillwater, Oklahoma and graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1942 with a degree in

mechanical engineering. After graduation, he was ordered to duty with the United States Army.

He served with the Corps of Engineers in the European Theater during World War II. His campaigns were

Rome-Arno, Southern France, and Rhineland. He commanded a company of combat engineers during

the fall of Rome, Italy on June 4, 1944 and in the amphibious landing on the French Riviera on August 15,

1944. He served with the Army of Occupation in Germany during the fall and winter of 1945 and during

the spring of 1946. He retired after 30 years in the Army Reserve with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

With the termination of World War II, Ed returned to his studies and was awarded a Master’s Degree

from Purdue University. Later, he studied for and received his doctorate from Iowa State University. He

taught in the College of Engineering at Kansas State University from 1949 to 1995. Ed received the

Kansas State University Award for Excellence in undergraduate instruction for the year 1978, the

university’s Outstanding Teacher in Engineering award in 1979, and the American Society of Engineering

Education award for outstanding teaching and contributions to the engineering profession in 1982. He

was a member of the engineering society Tau Beta Pi, the scholastic society Phi Kappa Phi, and the social

fraternity Beta Theta Pi. Though still serving part time, he was promoted to Professor Emeritus in 1988.

On May 26, 1951, he married the former Gloria Jo Staff at the First Methodist Church in Manhattan,

Kansas. During their marriage, Ed and Jo taught for several years in the Middle East. He taught for two

years at Assiut University in Egypt under a contract with the US Agency for International Development,

and a year each in Jordan and Qatar under Fulbright Fellowships.

Ed was a music lover, and had a song for every occasion. He enjoyed playing the harmonica, and took up

guitar in his nineties. He and Jo traveled widely after his retirement. He devoted much of his spare time

to the study of military history, crossword puzzles, and the daily Cryptoquote.

Jo continues to live at Meadowlark Hills. Other survivors include two sons, Kirk Lindly of Manhattan,

Kansas, and Jay Lindly of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; a daughter, Ruth Lindly of San Antonio, Texas; and four

grandchildren, Beth Lindly, of Birmingham, Alabama, Annie Maropis, of San Antonio, Texas, Grace Lindly,

of Northport, Alabama, and Tessa Maropis, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Funeral Services for Mr. Lindly will be held at 10:00a.m. Monday August 21, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church in Manhattan. Private burial will be held at the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 9:00a.m. until service time at the church on Monday.

Richard O. Wagoner, 90, died March 13, 2020 in Leonardville, Kansas. He was born March 5, 1930 in Wamego the son of Walter and Ada (Burroth) Wagoner. He was a Mechanic assistant at Brewer Motor Company for over 26 years. He also worked at Dillons and was a crossing guard also. Richard was a life member of VFW Post #1705, member &amp; past president of Eagles Lodge #2468 and he bowled on league teams for many years. Deborah A. Nemechek, age 86, of Blue Rapids, passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at Blue Valley Health and Rehabilitation in Blue Rapids.

Debbie Chesney was born in Portland, Oregon on February 2, 1937, to Ina (Carlson) and Harold Chesney.&nbsp; Debbie’s family moved to Seattle, Washington, where she spent many childhood years.&nbsp; Her family made another move to California.&nbsp; Debbie graduated from Carlmont High School in Belmont, California in 1955.

Debbie met her first husband a Navy Sailor, Byron Harder.&nbsp; The two were married in 1957.&nbsp; Debbie and Byron moved to Nebraska in 1964, where they raised their three children, Jay, Janet and Jeff.

Shortly after divorcing Byron, Debbie met Melvin Nemechek.&nbsp; Melvin and Debbie were married in 1986.&nbsp; They lived out their lives in Blue Rapids.&nbsp; Melvin passed away in 2020.

She was a member of the Blue Rapids United Methodist Church.

Debbie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Melvin and her ex-husband Byron.

Survivors include her children:&nbsp; Jay Harder of Pickrell, Nebraska, Janet (Dave) Newmyer of Wilber, Nebraska, Jeff Harder of Gretna, Nebraska, Bryon (Linda) Nemechek of Waterville, Kevin (Joanne) Nemechek of Inverness, Florida, Diann Elliott of Washington, and Jolene (Roger Miller) Musil of Marysville, a brother Doug Chesney and sister Carol (Bill) Knox, both living in California, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services are at 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 11, 2023, at the Blue Rapids United Methodist Church with Pastor Berniece Ludlum officiating.&nbsp; Althea Wertz will be the musician. Special recorded music will include “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”. &nbsp;Casket Bearers include: Randy Newmyer, Sam Newmyer, Mark Newmyer, Zachary Harder, Jacob Harder and&nbsp;Christopher Harper. Louis T. Robinson Jr. 84 of Abilene, KS passed away Monday August 7th, 2023. He was born September 5,1938 in Saint Francisville, Louisiana, and raised on the island of Guam, the son of Louis T Robinson Sr. and Louise Robinson. &nbsp; Louis served in the United States Marine Corps. It was there that he met his future wife Jeanette over a strawberry milkshake. That union would last 60 beautiful years. After his military service Louis drove a semi-truck for Safeway Inc. Upon retirement Louis and Jeanette shared many adventures traveling throughout United States in their RV. Between those East and West coast trips they decided to make the small western town of Abilene their home. Louis and Jeanette were in love with old Victorian homes and together restored them. Louis was a kind, gentle, loving man who always made a friend everywhere he went and was a skilled carpenter which was reflected in the restoration work in the homes that were restored. Louis was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Leo Robinson and Percy Robinson.&nbsp; He is survived by his wife an Author Jeanette Marie Robinson, his daughter, Lisa Robinson of Reno, NV and his son Christopher Robinson of Sacramento, CA. Roy Charles Travelute went home to his Lord and Savior August 7th 2023. He was born June 28th 1930 to Charles and Mary (Maxwell) Travelute. He lived a full and happy life 7 miles north of Talmage Kansas with his loving wife, Regeina (Timm) Travelute of 70 years.

They were united in marriage October 2nd 1952 in Abilene and had four sons. Randi and his wife Karen of Abilene, Rodni and his wife Tery of Holt Missouri, Robbi and his wife Terri of Abilene, and Russ and his wife Susan of Union Star Missouri. They were blessed with six grandchildren and five great grandchildren, and several step great grandchildren, and his one surviving sister Sally. Roy was the oldest of 5 children. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Verna Schultz, James, and Johnny. Dad was proud of his time serving his country in the United States Army. He rose to the rank of Sargent and was stationed in Europe as part of the 4th Battalion during the Korean War. He was a member of the Carpenters Union for over 65 yrs. He and his family farmed 40 acres with an old Allis Chalmers WD tractor and had livestock, and always had a wonderful garden that they shared with many neighbors, friends and family. Roy’s favorite hobby was going to auctions where he not only bought ''junk" but could visit with friends and neighbors. Anyone who knew him knew he loved to visit. He also loved to spend time telling many stories to his kids, grandkids, and even his greats. We all learned many lessons from him. He and Regeina attended the Lord's Chapel and later the Methodist Church, both in Talmage. A special thank you to Pat and Sandy Ponton, the Wuthnows, and his many friends and neighbors. A special thank you from Regeina’s family for your love and support. Memorial services will be 19th at 10:00 a.m. August 19, 2023 at the Talmage School Event Center with Lindsey Brummer officiating. Richard Walter Nelson

Betty May Bartley, 89, passed away August 7, 2023, at Clay Center. She was born December 19, 1933, in Gillingham, Wisconsin, to Clarence Herbert Berry and Mary Marie (Deckert) Berry. Betty was united in marriage to LeRoy Eugene Bartley on May 30, 1951, in Gillingham, Wisconsin. They made their home in rural Miltonvale, KS. While LeRoy served in the military, they relocated to California where Betty worked in laundry on the military base.

Upon returning to Kansas, they made their home in rural Miltonvale, then Oakhill. Betty assisted LeRoy with farmwork and livestock. The two of them routinely took cream to Miltonvale on Saturday afternoon to sell and purchase groceries. Betty raised chickens for eggs and fryers. Betty loved cooking and baking for family, friends, and anyone who needed a meal. She was an active church member where she taught Sunday school, Bible school, and cared for children in the nursery. After Betty and LeRoy moved to Clay Center in 1978, she worked at the IGA bakery, had a large strawberry patch that they shared with family and friends and deer, then cooked at Clay County Child Care. It was important to her that the children knew “Grandma Betty” cared for them. Betty was a breast cancer survivor. She was a prayer warrior.

Survivors include husband, LeRoy. Children Elgena (Mike) Smith, Bob (Yvonne) Bartley, Judy (Mark) Cook, and Rex Bartley. Grandchildren Dana (Chad) Plunkett, Suzanne Smith and Jimmy White, Bartley (Courtney) Smith, Lindsay (Jason) Moore, Michael Cook, Enona (Jim) Buster, Heather (Giovanni) Gardina, Steven Cook and Nicole Corby.  </figure>Betty May Bartley, 89, passed away August 7, 2023, at Clay Center. She was born December 19, 1933, in Gillingham, Wisconsin, to Clarence Herbert Berry and Mary Marie (Deckert) Berry. Betty was united in marriage to LeRoy Eugene Bartley on May 30, 1951, in Gillingham, Wisconsin. They made their home in rural Miltonvale, KS. While LeRoy served in the military, they relocated to California where Betty worked in laundry on the military base.Upon returning to Kansas, they made their home in rural Miltonvale, then Oakhill. Betty assisted LeRoy with farmwork and livestock. The two of them routinely took cream to Miltonvale on Saturday afternoon to sell and purchase groceries. Betty raised chickens for eggs and fryers. Betty loved cooking and baking for family, friends, and anyone who needed a meal. She was an active church member where she taught Sunday school, Bible school, and cared for children in the nursery. After Betty and LeRoy moved to Clay Center in 1978, she worked at the IGA bakery, had a large strawberry patch that they shared with family and friends and deer, then cooked at Clay County Child Care. It was important to her that the children knew “Grandma Betty” cared for them. Betty was a breast cancer survivor. She was a prayer warrior.Survivors include husband, LeRoy. Children Elgena (Mike) Smith, Bob (Yvonne) Bartley, Judy (Mark) Cook, and Rex Bartley. Kyle Everett Chase, 52, died Friday, August 4, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi in Wichita, KS. He was born December 26,1970 in Smithville, MO to Max A. &amp; Linda S. (Everett) Chase.

Kyle attended Abilene High School and graduated with the class of 1989. He also attended Salina Vo-Tech. He was employed by Don’s Tire in Abilene for 28 years.

He is survived by his mother, Linda Chase of Abilene, sister Carrie (Will) Sprouse of Enterprise and his girlfriend, Allison Stroda and her son David of Abilene. He is also survived by uncles and aunts, Kenneth (Sharon) Chase, David (Marty) Everett, Derald (Debbie) Craig and Shary Everett; nephews and nieces Cy, Ryan, Trey and Caysen Sprouse, and Carter Ann Carney-Sprouse; Cousins Rex Craig, DeDe Lorson, JT Everett III, Kip Chase and Jason Everett.

Kyle was preceded in death by his father, Max, grandparents Lowell &amp; Alice Chase and James T. “Tom” &amp; Ruth Everett, aunts Linda May Craig and Ruth Ann (Everett) Wade, an uncle James T. Everett, Jr. and his cousin Erin Lee Parman.

Betty J. Gehrt - August 28, 1929  -  August 7, 2023

Ethan Randall Chapman, 28, of Grandview, Missouri, and formerly of Manhattan, Kansas passed away on Wednesday, August 2, 2023.

Ethan was born on October 24, 1994 to Scott and Angie Chapman in Great Bend, KS. Three years later, he became a big brother to Joshua Chapman. Ethan’s first seven years were spent in Great Bend and Topeka, KS. His earliest interests were construction trucks, books, AWANA club (at church) and sports. In 2001, he moved with his family to Manhattan, KS where he lived until 2019.

He attended Flint Hills Christian School, Eisenhower Middle School and then graduated from Manhattan High School in 2013. He grew up playing the sports he loved (soccer, baseball, football, swimming, track and especially basketball) as well as playing guitar. He excelled academically in his AP classes with special interest in English and History. Ethan valued being involved in youth group at University Christian Church where he participated in weekly Bible studies, youth conferences and mission trips, his favorite being to Haiti in 2013.

After high school, he attended Kansas State University, graduating in 2015 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Advertising and Public Relations. He was active in Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, intramural sports and had a special love for ultimate frisbee. Ethan loved attending K-State football and basketball games relishing the times he could rush the court or field with wins over big rivals. His craft beer snobbery started while working for The Fridge Wholesale Liquor, his college, part-time employer.

Ethan’s career path has included transportation, manufacturing and of course advertising. He started his dream job at DCA Outdoors in Kansas City, MO as Marketing Campaigns Coordinator on July 24, 2023.

Ethan was a voracious reader of history. It seemed he knew everything about world history and politics and willingly expressed his passionate opinions about all of it! As a college student, he became a huge fan of Liverpool FC and beer, frequently enjoying both at the same time. This love led to a trip with his dad to England to watch a Liverpool match in 2017. His sports attention shifted a bit in recent years to Formula One Racing and he could talk endlessly about every aspect of high-performance car racing.

On issues that were important to him, Ethan was resolute in what he believed was right and wrong; very black and white with no meandering in the grey. His views were researched and thoroughly thought-through. Family and friends were rarely successful in changing his mind! He was a man of deep emotions, the strongest of which was love for his family and friends. His devotion to the people he loved was deep and long-lasting.

Ethan chose to be a follower of Jesus as a child. Despite his passing due to violent evil in the world, we are comforted knowing his eternity with the Lord in Heaven is certain.

Ethan is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Doyce and Bonnie Jones.

He is survived by both parents, Scott and Angie Chapman of Manhattan, KS; one brother, Joshua Chapman and his wife Raegan, of Salina, KS; paternal grandparents, Butch and Pat Chapman of Abilene, TX; and many aunts, uncles and cousins who love him dearly.

A celebration of Ethan’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 11, 2023 at Crestview Christian Church, 3940 Excel Road, Manhattan, KS, 66502. Visitation will be held at the same location on Thursday, August 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Carolyn Lea “Care Bear” McMasters, 48, of Westmoreland, Kansas, died Monday, July 31, 2023, at her home. &nbsp;Carolyn was a life-long resident of the area.

Carolyn was born on May 26, 1975, in Manhattan, Kansas, the daughter of Kevin and Peggy (Colvin) Wyffels. &nbsp;She attended local schools.

Carloyn worked as a Paraeducator, helping children with reading difficulties. &nbsp;She also served as a Sign Language interpreter. She also worked in construction as a drywall sander. &nbsp;Carolyn loved to play pool and darts. &nbsp;She enjoyed NASCAR and was a Dale Earnhardt, Sr. fan. Carolyn adored her family, especially her “babies” and there were few things that she enjoyed more than sitting around a big bonfire with friends and family. &nbsp;Care Bear, we love you to the moon and stars.

Carolyn is survived by her daughters, Kimberlea Becklund and Harper Serbus, both of Westmoreland; her mother, Peggy Wyffels, Westmoreland; her grandchildren, Ethan, Ella, Kaden, and Elise; her sisters, Rhonda Jarvis (Jimmy), St. George, Pamela Voirol (Michael), Bella Vista Arkansas, and Mary Johnson, Redwood Falls, Minnesota, and her special friend, Kevin Serbus, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and friends. &nbsp;Carolyn was preceded in death by her father, Kevin Wyffels, her grandparents, William and Mary Colvin, and her cousin Jason Wyffels.

Carolyn Lea “Care Bear” McMasters

James Leroy “Jim” Palenske, 77, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away on Monday (July 31, 2023) at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born September 29, 1945 in Manhattan, Kansas, Jim was the son of Edward Henry and Elinor Marie (Herbic) Palenske. He married Bonnie Songs on November 4, 1961 in Manhattan, Kansas and they celebrated 61 years of marriage. &nbsp;Bonnie survives.

Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved every minute he had fishing on his trips to Canada. He was a leader with the Wabaunsee 4-H Club and taught the group his skill of leather crafting. &nbsp;Jim belonged to the local CB Radio club with his handle “Double D”. &nbsp;Through this, he talked to and met many others who became lifelong friends.

Jim was employed as a Technician for Wamego Telephone Company for 27 years until his retirement in 2006. &nbsp;He previously helped farm with Lawrence Mertz, Glenn Wilson and Tom Dunn before going to work as an electrician for Bill Owens and later moving to the City of Wamego. &nbsp;He later became a Sales Representative for Bit-O-Gold Cheese where he sold and serviced milkers and bulk tanks before going to WTC.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie; two daughters, Brenda Ridder (Chris) of Alma and Julie McIntyre (Jerry) of Wamego; eight grandchildren, Ethan Walsh (Tiffany), Tristan Walsh (Mariah), Clara Carter, Hunter Ridder, Harley Ridder, Chelsey McIntyre (Corey), Jessica McIntyre (Evan) and Shaylea McIntyre; six great grandchildren, Hallie Walsh, Kamryn Walsh, Braylyn Walsh, Blazye Walsh, Malia Walsh and Zayden McIntyre; a brother, Eddy Palenske (Sue) of Wamego; a sister, Joan Jackson (LeRoy) of Wamego; a brother in law, LaVaughn Jones of Holcomb, IL; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Palenske was preceded in death by his parents; a son in infancy, Michael Lee Palenske; and a sister, Hazel Jones.

Cremation arrangements are in the care of Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego.

The family will host a celebration of Jim’s life on Saturday (September 30, 2023) from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Alma Community Center.

&nbsp; &nbsp;Private inurnment will be in the Wabaunsee Cemetery.

He was a leader with the Wabaunsee 4-H Club and taught the group his skill of leather crafting. &nbsp;Jim belonged to the local CB Radio club with his handle “Double D”. &nbsp;Through this, he talked to and met many others who became lifelong friends.Jim was employed as a Technician for Wamego Telephone Company for 27 years until his retirement in 2006. &nbsp;He previously helped farm with Lawrence Mertz, Glenn Wilson and Tom Dunn before going to work as an electrician for Bill Owens and later moving to the City of Wamego. &nbsp;He later became a Sales Representative for Bit-O-Gold Cheese where he sold and serviced milkers and bulk tanks before going to WTC.Survivors include his wife, Bonnie; two daughters, Brenda Ridder (Chris) of Alma and Julie McIntyre (Jerry) of Wamego; eight grandchildren, Ethan Walsh (Tiffany), Tristan Walsh (Mariah), Clara Carter, Hunter Ridder, Harley Ridder, Chelsey McIntyre (Corey), Jessica McIntyre (Evan) and Shaylea McIntyre; six great grandchildren, Hallie Walsh, Kamryn Walsh, Braylyn Walsh, Blazye Walsh, Malia Walsh and Zayden McIntyre; a brother, Eddy Palenske (Sue) of Wamego; a sister, Joan Jackson (LeRoy) of Wamego; a brother in law, LaVaughn Jones of Holcomb, IL; and many nieces and nephews.Mr. Palenske was preceded in death by his parents; a son in infancy, Michael Lee Palenske; and a sister, Hazel Jones.Cremation arrangements are in the care of Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego.The family will host a celebration of Jim’s life on Saturday (September 30, 2023) from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Alma Community Center.&nbsp; &nbsp;Private inurnment will be in the Wabaunsee Cemetery.&nbsp; &nbsp;Memorial contributions are suggested to Elara Hospice, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Wabaunsee Township Fire Department No. 8 and may be left with Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home, P. Rosella passed away Friday, July 28, 2023 at the Salina Regional Health Center. She was born May 18, 1944 in Abilene, the daughter of Clifford and Mabel (Forslund) Neal. Rosella enjoyed bowling, bingo, puzzles, all animals, and especially her grandchildren. She was a forty five year member of the Eagles Auxiliary and served as a state officer. She loved traveling and going to Washington State with her sister Lorna to class reunions. Ty Ralph Gibson, 66 of Abilene passed away Wednesday, August 2, 2023. He was born May 21, 1957 in Abilene, the son of Bobby Ralph and Jenice Marie (Glenn) Gibson. Ty grew up in the Abilene area, attended the local school districts and graduated from Abilene High School in 1975. On September 4, 2022 he was united in marriage to Joy Byfield at the Eisenhower Rose Garden. She survives of the home. 

He worked for the Sante Fe Railroad, Hulschers Train Derailment Co. and his last employment was a foreman for Bob Bergkamp Construction. Ty had a passion for running heavy equipment, riding his motorcycle and his three dogs.

 Ty is survived by his loving wife Joy of Abilene. Daughter, Kelsey Nicole Allen and husband Kyle of Sabetha. Granddaughter Madi Allen and bonus children Scott Michael Sarapa of Abilene and Ashli Marie Sarapa of Hays. He is preceded in death by his parents.

A Celebration of Life will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at New Trail Fellowship Church in Abilene. David Louis Bond, age 80, went to be with his Lord and his son, David Louis Bond II, on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at Abilene Memorial Hospital. He was born April 11, 1943, to John and Golda Bond in Russell, Kansas. He is survived by his wife Mary Ann (Hower) Bond, brother Fredric Bond (Sharron), sister-in-law Jerry Mitchell (Gary), and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. David was preceded in death by his father and mother, sister Lorita Von Niederhausern, brother John Glenn Bond, brother-in-law David Von Niederhausern, brother-in-law Gary Christie, and his son. David married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ann Hower, on August 27, 1961, in Russell, Kansas. David and Mary Ann moved to Salina, Kansas, where he was employed at Martin Marietta, later transferring to Wichita, Kansas. David moved his family back to Russell in 1963 and began working for Flock Oil Company. On August 11, 1963, David and Mary Ann became parents to David Louis. It was at that time David realized the importance of an education to support his family and enrolled at Fort Hays State College while continuing his work for the oil company. David graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Education degree in June of 1969. In the fall of 1969, David began his career in education, teaching fifth grade in Russell. In 1970, David earned a Master of Science degree in Administration from Fort Hays. In 1971, David moved his family to Hoxie, Kansas, where he was the K-8 Principal until 1975. In the fall of 1975, David became Principal at Kennedy Elementary/Primary School, Abilene, Kansas, serving 24 years. During his time at Kennedy, David was active in the Elementary Principals Organization, serving both state and national levels. In 1984, David was honored with the National Distinguished Principal award in Washington D.C. This was the first of many awards David earned during his career in education. On July 31, 1987, David earned Doctorate of Philosophy from Kansas State University, cementing his love for the Wildcats. In 1999, David retired from public education. David was devoted to doing what was best for all children Following his retirement, David spearheaded the organization for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dickinson County including becoming a Big Brother himself. During David’s lifetime, he was an avid hunter and fisherman, participating in the Pro Bass Fishing tour. As he aged, he developed a love for golf, playing daily until his health declined. David enjoyed attending Kansas State sporting events, especially football and men’s and women’s basketball. David was involved in many community organizations, especially those involving the well-being of children. David had a deep love for his family, his friends, and the Wildcats. His sense of humor and love to tease will be missed by his family. Services for David will be Saturday, August 19, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Abilene City Cemetery with Mr. Roger Walls officiating. Margaret Crook, age 99, of Manhattan, died Thursday August 3, 2023 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.

She was born on October 6, 1923 in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Raymond Ross and Alice (Boyd) Taylor. She grew up in Topeka and attended local schools and graduated from Topeka High School with the class of 1941. Her grandparents were in the first graduating class of Topeka High School of 1871. One of her grandfathers lived in Gettysburg and attended the Gettysburg address. Her father and his brother were the sons of Taylor nurseries in Topeka and worked closely with Kansas State University Ag department and sent apple seedlings all over the U.S. They came to Oakwood farms in Topeka in 1849 and lived there for 85 years.

Margaret was married to William V. Crook in 1941 in Pueblo, Colorado. He preceded her in death in 1992. She then was married to Lark. D. May in Topeka in 1997, he passed away in 2005. She later was married to Wallace Jeffrey, he preceded her in death in 2019.

Margaret and William were blessed with four children: William V. Crook Jr., Bruce R. Crook, Thomas R. Crook, and Carol Anne Crook. Margaret worked for many years as an assistant to the Riley County Engineer's until her retirement in 1986. She was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Manhattan. Her philosophy in life was to have a little fun every day. And she did! She loved people and could talk and laugh with the best of them.

In addition to her husbands, Margaret was also preceded in death by her son William “Billy” Crook Jr. and also her daughter Carol Anne Crook.

She is survived by her sons, Bruce Crook and Tom Crook and her step-son Gerry Jeffrey and step-daughter Dixie Coursen; also her 4 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Judy Lee Luthi, 67, of Abilene, Kansas, passed away at home with her husband Loran by her side on July 31, 2023.

Judy was born September 22, 1955, to Myron and Leora Simnitt, in Clay Center, Kansas. She and her two sisters, Rhonda and Dawn, grew up on a farm north of Green, Kansas. Judy graduated high school from Clay Center in 1973. She chose to continue her education, attending college in Manhattan, Kansas, and then began working at Kansas State University in the Dean’s Office of the School of Business.

Judy married Loran Robert Luthi on April 10, 1976 in Green, Kansas. She worked at South Western Bell Telephone Company in Junction City, Kansas, at the time and then later decided to focus on her next adventure, running the farming business and raising a family with Loran. Judy and Loran began their family in 1980 with the first of their four children, Deedra, Raymond, Kimberly, and Melanie.

Judy loved her family. She didn’t hesitate when someone in her family needed something, she would always show up and would always be there whether on the other end of the phone or on the other side of a hug. In recent years, her grandchildren, whom all call her “nana”, really brought a joy to her life. She loved helping on the farm - she kept busy times running smooth because she was always a step ahead of the rest. Judy also really enjoyed traveling - she and her family took many trips together.

Judy is survived by many loved ones: her husband, Loran Luthi, her daughter, Kimberly Brungardt, and grandchildren Leora Brungardt and Helen Brungardt, her daughter, Melanie Luthi, and her family Marcus Craig, Sianney Craig, Mireyah Craig, and Marquel Craig, her granddaughter, Harlee McDaniel, her mother, Leora Simnitt, her sister, Rhonda Slingsby, her sister, Dawn Langvardt and husband Greg Langvardt, sister-in-law, Natalie Wood and husband Darrell Wood, and many nieces and nephews and their families.

Judy was predeceased by her daughter, Deedra Luthi, son, Raymond Luthi, father, Myron Simnitt, and brother-in-law, Warren Slingsby.
