Dwight “Tony” Anthony Hamilton, age 67, of Manhattan, KS died Sunday, August 13, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi in Manhattan.&nbsp;

He was born in New London, Ohio, the son of Albert Hamilton and Juanita Hamilton Akers. Dwight grew up in New London, Ohio, and attended Mapleton High School. He graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science in Sociology and Criminal Justice.&nbsp;

Dwight served his country in the Army for 4 years. He was a jack-of-all-trades and later became a handyman, owning his own businesses off and on. He was also a great car salesman throughout the years. He enjoyed working with his hands and was an avid sports fan, especially Kansas State University and the Kansas City Chiefs. In his earlier years, he loved to cruise the back roads on his motorcycle. Dwight was known as a free spirit; he would give you the shirt off his back and loved helping people. He will be missed by all of those whom he called a friend and family.

Dwight is survived by his son; Dustin W. Hamilton, Daughter; Tina M. Clark, Brothers; Ronald Hamilton, Buddy Hamilton, and Bo Hamilton, Sisters; Pamela James Gardner, Mary A. Vonberhren, Elizabeth Ives, and his Grandchildren; Madilynn Hamilton, and Sawyer Clark.

A celebration of life will be held with Military Honors at the Veterans Cemetery in Manhattan, KS on October 23, 2023, at 11:00 a.m.

Betty K. Klaverweiden, 95 of Salisbury went to her Heavenly Home on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on October 3, 1927 in Mardela Springs a daughter of the late Elmer and Eva Donoho Cheezum.

Betty met and married Jesse Klaverweiden and together they raised four children and farmed together hand in hand for many years. They raised pigs, a variety of crops and laying hens. She was a wonderful cook and her homemade dumplings were a family favorite. She always remembered each family member’s favorite dish and would make it for them when they came to visit. She always knew how to make others feel loved and had a smile for everyone she met. Betty was the oldest member of Athol Baptist Church where she attended her entire life.

She is survived by her children, Beverly Lowe (Edwin) of Delmar, Bruce Klaverweiden (Nancy) of Kansas, and Brenda New (Chad) of Florida; grandchildren, Stephen Cropper, Jason Cropper, Kim Dodt, David Warren, Renee Warren, Katie Klaverweiden, and Heidi Klaverweiden; six great grandchildren; ten great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and sister by marriage, Irene Gravenor.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband Jesse Klaverweiden; a daughter, Bonnie Cropper; and siblings, Raymond Cheezum, Weldon Cheezum, Iva Green, Virginia Phillips, and Naomi Gambrill.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11am to Noon on Saturday, August 26, 2023 at Short Funeral Home in Delmar. The funeral service will begin at Noon on Saturday. Interment will follow at Mardela Cemetery. The family requests that those attending the service please wear a mask.

Betty Klaverweiden

Father Melvin Long was born August 7, 1940, in New Almelo. He died on Thursday, August 17, 2023.

Father Long’s parents were Andrew and Regina (Otter) Long. He attended grade school at St. John’s in Beloit, graduated from St. Francis Seminary High School in Victoria, St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minnesota, as well as the American Theological Seminary at University of Louvain in Belgium.

He was ordained June 18, 1966, at St. John the Baptist in Beloit by Bishop Cyril Vogel.

One of the most notable accomplishments during Father Long’s ministry was founding St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Salina in 1981. Father Long led the project, building the parish from the ground up. The parish today is served by Father Keith Weber and has 684 families as regular parishioners. As the parish was being built, Father Long celebrated Mass in some very interesting places, including the movie theater!

Father Long’s priestly ministry included teaching positions at Marymount College, Bethany College and Cloud County Community College, but he was also called to minister in Europe. Father Long spent his seminary years in Belgium at the American Theological Seminary at University of Louvain. After his ordination, he was called back to Belgium to serve as a faculty member in 1973 and later served as leadership in the 1990s.

When Father Long retired in 2002, he moved to California due to health complications. However, his priestly ministry did not stop there. He filled in at parishes across the country so that other priests could take extended sabbaticals. He also was a part of the “Apostleship of the Sea of the United States of America” and did some cruise ship ministry for several years.

In the May 2016 issue of The Register, Father Long stated, “I love ministry, and I love people. That’s why I’ve continued (ministering) beyond retirement on a regular basis.”&nbsp; He also fondly recalled the many friendships he still maintained from his years serving in the Diocese of Salina.

Becky Lynn Beichter, 67, passed away on August 18, 2023 at her home in Clay County, KS.

She was born on March 19, 1956 to Donald William and Oneita Mae (Musselman) Evans in Clay Center. She grew up on a farm in the May Day and Green communities and graduated from Clay Center Community High School in 1974.

Becky worked at Cedar Court restaurant for several years until she married Alfred A.

(Buddy) Beichter on September 12, 1987 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Clay Center. They farmed together until his passing on September 24, 1994. Becky then took over the farming operation which she loved. She also worked at the St. Paul Lutheran Preschool for the last 15 years. The kids knew her as "Miss Becky" and she loved every one of them.

Becky was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church and was a Sunday School teacher for many years. She also helped with many dinners and vacation Bible school. She was a Cloverleaf 4-H community leader in Wakefield and a member of the Union HEU for many years. She loved attending the Clay County Fair and also enjoyed going to local auctions. She spent time with her grandchildren, gardening, raising farm cats and playing many card games with her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Mader and husband Conan, two grandchildren Zane and Amilya of Hillsboro; her sister Beverly Shivers and husband Kenneth of Clay Center; and her brother Bryan Evans and wife Konnie of Green and many nieces and nephews and their families.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 from 4-7p.m.. at the Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home in Clay Center, Kansas.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 24, 2023 at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Clay Center, Kansas.

Wesley Eugene Judd 65 of Abilene passed away August 16, 2023 at his home. He was born February 14, 1958 in Phillipsburg, Kansas the son of Francis and Margaret Judd. Wesley grew up in the Stockton, Kansas community and worked at the grocery store in Stockton. On April 19, 1986 Wesley married Barbara Ann Leiker in Stockton and they settled in Abilene. Wesley had worked at West’s Country Mart for many years and loved interacting with the customers and working for the West family. Wesley was an avid Kansas State Football fan and enjoyed his 1970’s rock music. He also enjoyed science fiction. Wesley was preceded in death by his parents. Wesley is survived by his wife Barbara of the home, brothers Mark Judd of Topeka, Kansas, and Delvan Judd of Phillipsburg, Kansas. His daughter Brenda Thacker, son Matthew Thacker and grandchildren David Thacker and Kaylee Thacker. Stanley L. Berven, 92 of Abilene passed away Tuesday, August 15, 2023. He was born February 20, 1931 in Webster City, Iowa, the son of Severt and Frankie (Blue) Berven. He grew up in the Kamrar, Iowa area and graduated from Kamrar High School. On August 5, 1950 he was united in marriage to Arlene Grubbe in Webster City, Iowa. She preceded him in death September 30, 2004. He owned and operated his own trucking company, Reliable Freight Lines. He was a member of the Abilene Elks Club and the OOIDA trucking organization.

 Stanley is survived by his two sons, David and wife Arlene of Abilene and Dennis and wife Kay of Florida. Seven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter, Ann Tschampel, and great-grandson, Derek Peterson. The family has chosen cremation.

A Celebration of Life will be held September 30th at the Abilene Elks Club. The family suggests memorials be given to the Hospice of Dickinson County. Memorials may be dropped off or mailed to Danner Funeral Home, 501 N. Buckeye, Abilene, Kansas 67410.

Darrel Paul Rusch, born August 28, 1947, in Abilene, KS, was the son of Paul W. and Emma L. (Klamm) Rusch and died August 11. 2023. Darrel attended Carry Creek Elementary, Chapman High School, and graduated from Bethany College in Lindsborg, KS with a degree in business/economics. Soon after he graduated from college, Darrel was drafted&nbsp;into&nbsp;the&nbsp;U. S. Army. He served for ten months in Vietnam and was stationed at Fort Des Moines in Iowa. His marriage to Susan Gottneid, whom he met while attending Bethany College, took place at Bethany Lutheran Church in Lindsborg, Kansas, during his military time in Des Moines. They lived in the Kansas City area for 12 years before returning to his family's farm near Woodbine in 1986. Darrel was a cattle farmer who loved to spend time with his family and enjoyed gardening, woodworking, and listening to music. One of the highlights of his life was the month-long trip he and Sue took to see Sue's missionary parents in Tanzania, East Africa. &nbsp; Preceding him in death were his parents and brother, Loren Rusch. He is survived by his wife Susan Rusch, daughter Christina (Justin) Carlson, son Tim (Megan) Rusch, sister Pauline Rusch and four grandchildren, Grady and Malin Carlson and Camren and Clayton White.&nbsp;

Darrel was a cattle farmer who loved to spend time with his family and enjoyed gardening, woodworking, and listening to music. One of the highlights of his life was the month-long trip he and Sue took to see Sue's missionary parents in Tanzania, East Africa. &nbsp; Preceding him in death were his parents and brother, Loren Rusch. He is survived by his wife Susan Rusch, daughter Christina (Justin) Carlson, son Tim (Megan) Rusch, sister Pauline Rusch and four grandchildren, Grady and Malin Carlson and Camren and Clayton White.&nbsp;Arrangements are in the care of the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW Third Street, Abilene (785-263-1414).

Maxine LaNae (McGrath) Rush passed away on the evening of Wednesday, August 9th, 2023, at the Linn Community Nursing Home in Linn, KS. She was born on March 12, 1962, in Clay Center, KS, to Russell and Heloise McGrath.

Milton Otto Henneberg, 95, of Onaga, Kansas, died Tuesday, August 15, 2023, at the Onaga Health and Rehab Center. &nbsp;He was a lifelong resident of the area.

Milton was born on June 16, 1928, in Wheaton, Kansas, the son of Louis W. and Esther (Force) Henneberg. &nbsp;He attended local grade school and graduated in 1946 from Wheaton High School.

Milton was a farmer and stockman, working on the family farm most of his adult life. During WWII, as many local farmers, Milton helped with the war effort by not only raising the food needed by our nation but also, he was a civilian plane spotter and counter. &nbsp;He was known for his Angus cattle and was recognized by the Angus Association for having the longest continuous commercial Angus herd in the state of Kansas. &nbsp;Milton also worked as a rural mail carrier part-time for twenty-five years and full-time for ten years.

Milton was a member of the Kansas Rural Letter Carriers Association, a past member of the Wheaton School Board, and a board member for the Rural Water District #3. &nbsp;He served on the boards of the Onaga Rural Hospital and the PR&amp;W Rural Electric. &nbsp;Milton was an active member of St. Luke Lutheran Church and served as Sunday School Superintendent for several years. &nbsp;He always had a beautiful yard and was very particular about its care and the flowers. &nbsp;Milton loved to read and was a writer. &nbsp;As historian he was very interested in Native American history. &nbsp;Milton loved to hunt for arrow heads in the fields surrounding his farm and had an impressive collection. &nbsp;He was a man who cared about the people around him.

Milton married Dorothy Mae Honig on April 17, 1949, in Duluth, Kansas. &nbsp;After 69 years of their lives intertwined, Dorothy preceded him in death on July 26, 2018.

Milton is survived by his children, Deborah Berges (Eugene), Onaga, Jan Newman (Bryce), Burlingame, Susan Magnett, (Roger), Wheaton, Woodrow Henneberg (Linda), Wheaton, and Tammy Lierz (Alan), Manhattan; his two granddaughters and twelve grandsons; his eight great- granddaughters, twenty-three great-grandsons, and one great-great-grandson; his sister, Eva Brunkow (Duane), Topeka, brother-in-law, George Welch, Topeka, and sister-in-law, Jean Northup, Wamego. Milton was also preceded in death by his parents, and infant granddaughter, Sarah Henneberg, and his siblings, Faye Wirt, Mary Smith, Dean Henneberg, Vera Marten, and Frances Welch.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 22, 2023, at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Wheaton. &nbsp;Reverend Terry DeGiovanni will be officiating. &nbsp;Burial will follow in the Wheaton Congregational Cemetery. &nbsp;Milton will lie-in-state Monday, August 21st, at Campanella and Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego beginning at 4:00 pm, where the family will greet friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.&nbsp; A Prayer Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. &nbsp;They suggest memorial contributions to the Wheaton Congregational Cemetery or St. Luke Lutheran Church, and those may be sent in care of the funeral home.&nbsp;

Edward Albert Lust, Jr., age 77, died Monday, August 14, 2023, at his home in St. George, KS, surrounded by family.

Ed was a third-generation Belgian, born on January 9, 1946, in Kansas City, KS; the son of Edward Albert Lust Sr. and Jeannette "Jenny" Alma Bryon, who preceded him in death. Ed attended Turner High School, then served his country in the US Army for three years. After his military service, he worked for over 46 years at Trans World Airlines (later American Airlines) as a Plant Maintenance Mechanic until his retirement.

Ed united in marriage to Kathleen Elizabeth Prestia, on April 11, 1969, in Kansas City, KS. Together they shared 54 years of love and devotion to one another. She survives the home.

Also surviving are two sons Edward Albert Lust III (wife Teri) of Raymore, MO, and William "Billy" Michael Lust (wife Angela) of Topeka, KS, brother Jimmy Michael Lust (wife Linda) of Kansas City, KS, three granddaughters Josey Rae Laughlin (husband Alex), Kara Marie Lust, Taylor Elaine Lust and two grandsons, Braden Michael Lust and Benjamin Riley Lust.

Ed grew up on his parent's truck farm and continued the skills he learned there, building and repairing whatever he needed. He earned airframe and powerplant aircraft licenses and single and multi-engine pilot licenses and loved flying with Kathy across several states.

When Ed wasn't working or flying for enjoyment, he would drive his 1937 Chevrolet Coup, which he had restored. Ed was the first one to volunteer to help neighbors and friends. There is nothing he wasn't good at fixing or building. He built his own home while working a full-time job at night. However, Ed was most proud of his son’s and grandchildren's accomplishments. Ed made an impression on everyone he encountered and was loved and admired by his family.

Internment at the Leavenworth National Cemetery Chapel, Leavenworth, KS, on August 25th at 11:00 a.m.

Cremation arrangements are in the care of Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home.

He enjoyed traveling, going to the casino and collecting coins and guns. However, his true passion was spending time with his family, visiting with people and spending time in the country. Dorothy E. Parker, 73, of Junction City, Kansas passed away on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at Stormont Vail - Flint Hills Campus in Junction City. Cremation will take place. 

A private graveside service with family will take place at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery. Dorothy was born on March 22, 1950, East St. Louis, Illinois the daughter of Harold and Helen (Malinsky) Schotter. On September 4, 1970, she married Dennis E. Parker, Sr. in Illinois Dorothy worked as a Civil Servant for many years at Fort Riley with thirty eight years of service. She retired in September of 2009. Dorothy is survived by her loving Grandsons, Jordan A. Parker and his wife Jessica of Abilene, KS, Ronald Wilson, Jr., David B. Gulley, Jr. and Keegan Parker; two great-grandchildren. Edward E. Small, 75, of Dwight, passed away on August 12, 2023 at Life Care Center in Burlington, Kansas. Ed was born on December 23, 1947, to Willard and Cora (Norton) Small in Chico, California. He lived in California until his grandmother signed him up for the U.S. Army at the age of 16 and he served honorably in two tours in Vietnam and one in Korea. Once back home, he decided to stay in until his retirement in 1985. Soon after his departure from the military, he started truck driving, where he stayed for another 25 years. Ed never took too well with retiring, so he decided to continue to help his community by taking on different tasks around town. Ed and Clovis were married on March 27, 1970, in Jesup, Georgia. Over 53 years of marriage, Ed and Clovis lived all around the United States due to Ed's military career. They both built a family together during the years he was in the military. He is survived by his loving wife; two sons, Chuck of Dwight Kansas, Matthew (Melinda) of Wilsey, Kansas and one daughter, Lillie of Dwight, Kansas. He is preceded by one son, Willie of Brunswick, Georgia and two daughters, Debbie of Crocker, Missouri and Sandra of Junction City.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jean Garvey, 70, Junction City, Kansas, died Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at her home in Junction City. Cremation will take place. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Nebraska. Jean graduated from Mercy High School in 1971 in Omaha, Nebraska where she grew up. Later, she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Social Studies in 1978, from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Her first teaching assignment was in Ainsworth, Nebraska from 1978 to 1980. She began her service as a Reading Specialist at Junction City High School in August 1982, after receiving a Master's Degree of Reading that same year from UNO. She later moved to the History Department of the high school. For 37 years, she was dedicated to the teaching profession at JCHS, until her retirement in May 2019. During those many years, Jean was an active member of the Junction City Education Association and also served on the Board of Directors. In 2002, she was a nominee for Master Teacher; in 2004, she traveled to China as a Fulbright Scholar. As well as serving as a KSU consultant for Social Studies teachers, Jean mentored many student teachers over 25 years. The passion of her teaching career was as an Advanced Placement History teacher. She was an educator who met students where they were, scaffolding skills for them to access content to find success. In the 1980s, Jean was a cheerleading coach and also sponsored J Pep. She served as the chair of the Social Studies Department. Her contributions to the profession included not only teaching but also working on the School Improvement Team, the Student Assistance Team, and the Reading Committee. She belonged to the International Reading Association. A longtime fellow Social Studies teacher Jud Lebo said, "Jean was a great role model and mentor as she left such an impactful impression on colleagues and students. I have not met a greater beacon of professionalism, wisdom, commitment, and compassion in my life." Outside of her profession, early on, Jean and her sister Joan were "Kennedy Girls" for the Robert Kennedy 1968 Presidential Campaign. She loved politics, especially educated debates. Jean was a seeker of social justice in the area especially of women's rights admiring Ida B. Wells, an early leader of the Civil Rights Movement. Jean was an aficionado of Americana and loved Native American art and jewelry. In her reserved, respectful, engaged manner, Jean brought a richness to the Junction City High School Community and beyond. Survivors include one sister, Joan Garvey of Omaha, Nebraska; one brother, Paul Garvey of Omaha, Nebraska; four nephews and three nieces; eight great-nieces and nephews. She was a super aunt and loved her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sharon Kay Oliver, 82, of Wamego, Kansas, died Saturday, August 12, 2023, at her home, following a lengthy illness. &nbsp;She was a long-time resident of the Wamego area.

Sharon was born on November 11, 1940, in Superior, Nebraska, the daughter of Glenn LeRoy and Dora Mae (Knigge) Hiatt. &nbsp;She attended local grade school and graduated in 1958 from Superior High School. Sharon married Carl Gene Oliver, Sr. on October 12, 1958, in Superior. They were blessed with three children, Carl Jr., Kayla and Linda. &nbsp; After nearly 65 years of a wonderful life together, Carl survives at their home.

Upon high school graduation, Sharon assumed the duties as head accountant for the local J.C. Penney store. &nbsp;She later operated a daycare center in Manhattan, Kansas while her children were young. &nbsp;She worked for H&amp;R Block in Manhattan for two years and then purchased the H&amp;R Block Tax franchise in Wamego, Kansas in 1971. &nbsp;Sharon owned and operated the business for 32 years. &nbsp;After selling the business, she continued to work for H&amp;R Block for 19 years. &nbsp;Along with the tax office, she also operated an accounting service for small businesses. &nbsp;In addition, she served as treasurer for the First Presbyterian Church of Wamego for several years.

Sharon was first and foremost a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and loved her family dearly. She loved to sew, and she made her grandchildren Halloween costumes, quilts, and Christmas decorations. Her family also called upon her for all their mending. &nbsp;Sharon enjoyed cooking for big family dinners and there was always a request for her to make malts, butterfinger balls, and her famous snack mix. Christmas was her favorite holiday. &nbsp;Sharon and Carl attended all their grandchildren’s activities religiously, sometimes driving between more than one event in a day. &nbsp;She followed her mother’s tradition of buying a pizza for each home run that was hit. Easter egg hunts were another fun time for the family. &nbsp;She would hide as many as 300 eggs, not only for the little ones, but the older ones too. Sharon spent many hours on the computer researching family history. &nbsp;Genealogy was her favorite pastime. &nbsp;Sharon was always ready to travel and due to her love of our country, Washington D.C. was her favorite place to visit. &nbsp;New York and Broadway plays were another favorite for Sharon. &nbsp;She enjoyed bank sponsored bus tours with friends across the USA. &nbsp;She also enjoyed playing cards and dominos with friends, but most of all, she loved spending time with her family. &nbsp;She was thrilled when she had a house full of company, whether it was planned or spur of the moment.

On Christmas eve in 2018, Sharon was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma Cancer. &nbsp;That day Carl became her caregiver, and their life was changed forever. &nbsp;Sharon’s goal was always to live to a hundred. &nbsp;Even though her illness would not allow that, she never let this disease get the best of her. &nbsp;She fought to the end.

Sharon Kay Oliver

Ronald Herbert Abitz, 72, of Westmoreland, Kansas, died Friday, August 11, 2023, at University of Kansas Health Center, St. Francis Campus, in Topeka. &nbsp; He was a life-long member of the area.

Ron was born on August 31, 1950, in Onaga, Kansas, the son of Herbert F. and Adelina (Honig) Abitz. &nbsp;He attended Wheaton grade school and graduated from Onaga High School in 1968. &nbsp;He then attended Pittsburg State University, where he played on the school’s football team, and then he attended Manhattan Technical College.

Ron was a farmer and a stockman, working on the family farm most of his adult life. &nbsp;He also owned and operated Ron’s Bar and Grill in Onaga for several years. &nbsp;He loved to cook and was especially known for his brisket and ham gravy. &nbsp;Ron had his own secret process for his brisket, and it was a secret that died with him. &nbsp;He enjoyed hunting and did guided hunting trips and going fishing. &nbsp;Going to the Casino was a favorite pastime for Ron, He had several different coffee spots in Westmoreland and Onaga to sit and visit with friends.&nbsp;

Ron had a reputation of being ornery, but also was an active and loving grandfather and foster-grandfather to more than twenty-five foster children.

Ron married Barbara Ann Smith on June 15, 1979. &nbsp;Following forty-four years of life together, she survives at their home.

Ron is also survived by his sons; Marcus Abitz (Jordan), of Wheaton, and Joe LeBlanc (Staci) of Westmoreland, his grandchildren, Jacie LeBlanc, Elizabeth Abitz, Charlotte Abitz, and Silas Abitz; and his brother Lee Abitz (Barbara), Emmett. &nbsp;Ron was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Jerry.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am, Monday, August 21, 2023, at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Wheaton, Kansas. &nbsp;Reverend Terry DeGiovanni will be officiating. &nbsp;Burial will follow in St. Luke Lutheran North Cemetery. &nbsp;

Ronald Herbert Abitz

Nancy Jo Steel, age 73 of Riley, passed away Thursday, August 10, 2023 at her residence.

She was born on May 12, 1950 in Blue Rapids, the daughter of Leroy Bert and Gertrude Aldena (Schreiner) Sutton.

On December 3, 1966 she married Marvin Lee Steel in the Blue Rapids United Methodist Church.

Nancy worked as a CNA and in the laundry department at the Leonardville Nursing Home and at the Calico Inn as a waitress and cook.&nbsp; She also helped Marvin with bridge construction.&nbsp; She was very sociable and a member of the Eagles and Moose Lodges.&nbsp; She enjoyed doing anything artistic.

She is survived by her husband, Marvin Steel of Riley; two daughters, Brenda Steel Marshall and husband Frank of Rowlett, Texas and Giggit Rena’ Peterson of Branson, Missouri; three grandchildren, Nicole Myers, Brooke Myers and Franklin Marshall, and one great grandson, Leon Myers.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Patsy Ann Sutton and one brother, Richard Sutton.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. Sunday, August 13, 2023 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Nancy Jo Steel, age 73 of Riley, passed away Thursday, August 10, 2023 at her residence.She was born on May 12, 1950 in Blue Rapids, the daughter of Leroy Bert and Gertrude Aldena (Schreiner) Sutton.On December 3, 1966 she married Marvin Lee Steel in the Blue Rapids United Methodist Church.Nancy worked as a CNA and in the laundry department at the Leonardville Nursing Home and at the Calico Inn as a waitress and cook.&nbsp; She also helped Marvin with bridge construction.&nbsp; She was very sociable and a member of the Eagles and Moose Lodges.&nbsp; She enjoyed doing anything artistic.She is survived by her husband, Marvin Steel of Riley; two daughters, Brenda Steel Marshall and husband Frank of Rowlett, Texas and Giggit Rena’ Peterson of Branson, Missouri; three grandchildren, Nicole Myers, Brooke Myers and Franklin Marshall, and one great grandson, Leon Myers.She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Patsy Ann Sutton and one brother, Richard Sutton.The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. Sunday, August 13, 2023 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 14, 2023 in the Riley Cemetery with Pastor Kevin Larson officiating.Memorials may be made to the Nancy Steel Memorial Fund to be designated by the family at a later date.&nbsp; Contributions may be left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

John Patrick Sullivan Sr., loving husband, father, and Grandpa (Paw Paw), ended his suffering and left this life on August 6, 2023, at the age of 73. He passed in his home with his wife, Linda of 43 years by his side. He is survived by his wife Linda, of the home; three sons, Douglas Sullivan and wife Carol of Hayes, VA, David Sullivan and wife Michelle of Garden City, MO and John Sullivan Jr. of Saint Joseph, MO; three daughters, Melinda Smelley and husband Shannon, DeAnn Widener and husband James both of Junction City, KS, and Tina Elliott and husband Bart of St. Robert, MO; 60 grandchildren, 69 great grandchildren, and 1 great great-grandchild. John was preceded in death by his mom, Josephine Enos; sister, Michelle Sullivan; daughter, Mary Jane Foxworth; two grandsons, Ryan Knorr and Red Morgan; son-in-law, SFC Gregory Hicks and daughter-in-law Patricia Sullivan. John joined the Army in 1973, and was stationed at Fort Riley, KS. He served in the tail end of the Vietnam War, one year in Korea and Desert Storm. Other than his deployments, he was stationed at Fort Riley, KS, his entire Army career until he retired in May 1991. After his retirement from the Army, John worked for the State of Kansas for a brief time before becoming a truck driver until his health wouldn’t allow him to work anymore. John was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Enjoyed camping, fishing and anything that involved his family. He was fun, loving, ornery, spontaneous man, who spoke his mind. You never knew what to expect him to do or say next or whether it was going to make you embarrassed, angry, cry or laugh (mostly we laughed). He was a stern father and prepared his children well for the world and mellowed when the grandkids came along. By the time the greats started coming, they had paw paw wrapped around their little fingers. Services will be held at Johnson Funeral Home in Junction City, KS, Monday, August 14, 2023, at 11:30 a.m., with a procession to Kansas Veterans Cemetery, Manhattan, KS. Immediately following will be a Celebration of Life at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 210 E 10th, Junction City, KS.

SSG(Ret) John P. Sullivan, Sr.

Edwin C. Lindly, age 101, died August 12, 2023, at Meadowlark Hills in Manhattan.

He was born October 15, 1921 in Madill, Oklahoma to E.C. Lindly and Hattie Jane (Vaden) Lindly. He

grew up in Stillwater, Oklahoma and graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1942 with a degree in

mechanical engineering. After graduation, he was ordered to duty with the United States Army.

He served with the Corps of Engineers in the European Theater during World War II. His campaigns were

Rome-Arno, Southern France, and Rhineland. He commanded a company of combat engineers during

the fall of Rome, Italy on June 4, 1944 and in the amphibious landing on the French Riviera on August 15,

1944. He served with the Army of Occupation in Germany during the fall and winter of 1945 and during

the spring of 1946. He retired after 30 years in the Army Reserve with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

With the termination of World War II, Ed returned to his studies and was awarded a Master’s Degree

from Purdue University. Later, he studied for and received his doctorate from Iowa State University. He

taught in the College of Engineering at Kansas State University from 1949 to 1995. Ed received the

Kansas State University Award for Excellence in undergraduate instruction for the year 1978, the

university’s Outstanding Teacher in Engineering award in 1979, and the American Society of Engineering

Education award for outstanding teaching and contributions to the engineering profession in 1982. He

was a member of the engineering society Tau Beta Pi, the scholastic society Phi Kappa Phi, and the social

fraternity Beta Theta Pi. Though still serving part time, he was promoted to Professor Emeritus in 1988.

On May 26, 1951, he married the former Gloria Jo Staff at the First Methodist Church in Manhattan,

Kansas. During their marriage, Ed and Jo taught for several years in the Middle East. He taught for two

years at Assiut University in Egypt under a contract with the US Agency for International Development,

and a year each in Jordan and Qatar under Fulbright Fellowships.

Ed was a music lover, and had a song for every occasion. He enjoyed playing the harmonica, and took up

guitar in his nineties. He and Jo traveled widely after his retirement. He devoted much of his spare time

to the study of military history, crossword puzzles, and the daily Cryptoquote.

Jo continues to live at Meadowlark Hills. Other survivors include two sons, Kirk Lindly of Manhattan,

Kansas, and Jay Lindly of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; a daughter, Ruth Lindly of San Antonio, Texas; and four

grandchildren, Beth Lindly, of Birmingham, Alabama, Annie Maropis, of San Antonio, Texas, Grace Lindly,

of Northport, Alabama, and Tessa Maropis, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Funeral Services for Mr. Lindly will be held at 10:00a.m. Monday August 21, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church in Manhattan. Private burial will be held at the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 9:00a.m. until service time at the church on Monday.

Richard O. Wagoner, 90, died March 13, 2020 in Leonardville, Kansas. He was born March 5, 1930 in Wamego the son of Walter and Ada (Burroth) Wagoner. He was a Mechanic assistant at Brewer Motor Company for over 26 years. He also worked at Dillons and was a crossing guard also. Richard was a life member of VFW Post #1705, member &amp; past president of Eagles Lodge #2468 and he bowled on league teams for many years. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, August 17th, at the St. George Cemetery.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Deborah A. Nemechek, age 86, of Blue Rapids, passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at Blue Valley Health and Rehabilitation in Blue Rapids.

Debbie Chesney was born in Portland, Oregon on February 2, 1937, to Ina (Carlson) and Harold Chesney.&nbsp; Debbie’s family moved to Seattle, Washington, where she spent many childhood years.&nbsp; Her family made another move to California.&nbsp; Debbie graduated from Carlmont High School in Belmont, California in 1955.

Debbie met her first husband a Navy Sailor, Byron Harder.&nbsp; The two were married in 1957.&nbsp; Debbie and Byron moved to Nebraska in 1964, where they raised their three children, Jay, Janet and Jeff.

Shortly after divorcing Byron, Debbie met Melvin Nemechek.&nbsp; Melvin and Debbie were married in 1986.&nbsp; They lived out their lives in Blue Rapids.&nbsp; Melvin passed away in 2020.

She was a member of the Blue Rapids United Methodist Church.

Debbie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Melvin and her ex-husband Byron.

Survivors include her children:&nbsp; Jay Harder of Pickrell, Nebraska, Janet (Dave) Newmyer of Wilber, Nebraska, Jeff Harder of Gretna, Nebraska, Bryon (Linda) Nemechek of Waterville, Kevin (Joanne) Nemechek of Inverness, Florida, Diann Elliott of Washington, and Jolene (Roger Miller) Musil of Marysville, a brother Doug Chesney and sister Carol (Bill) Knox, both living in California, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services are at 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 11, 2023, at the Blue Rapids United Methodist Church with Pastor Berniece Ludlum officiating.&nbsp; Althea Wertz will be the musician.
