Jim Yarrow, 82, of rural Wakefield, KS died March 8, 2023, at 
Ascension Via Christie Hospital in Manhattan. Jimmie Lee Yarrow was born
 March 20, 1940, to Laurence and Hila (Faidley) Yarrow. At the age of 7,
 he accepted Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior at a Uniondale 
Baptist Church revival. Most assuredly, he is now in the very presence 
of his Savior.

Jim attended Uniondale Grade School, followed by Clay Center High 
School, (class of 1958), where he was active in FFA (Future Farmers of 
America). While still in high school, he joined the National Guard and 
enjoyed their "summer camps" at various locations.

Farming and livestock were his passions. While farming with his dad 
in earlier years, he also did soil conservation work of 
building/cleaning ponds and construction of terraces. The day before his
 passing, he was driving pastures with his skid steer and tree puller 
attachment, pulling up cedars.

On December 13, 1969, Jim married Kathy Becker of Salina, KS. 
Together they farmed all of their married life in the Wakefield area, as
 the fourth generation on the original Yarrow farm. They were blessed 
with three children and their families, all of whom survive:

Son Jason Yarrow of Wakefield, Daughter Karla and husband Rich Elliott of Kazakhstan, Daughter Kelly and husband Brandon Kuenning of Grant, NE Seven special grandchildren: Oliver, Zack, Emma, and Macy Elliott Luke, Lily, and June Kuenning

Also surviving, is one brother-in-law, Raymond Becker of Columbus, NE. Jim was preceded in death by his parents.

She was born on January 24, 1947, to Josef and Gisela (Sixt) Kuhlman in Wiesbaden, Germany. Karola enjoyed crocheting and tending to her plants. She loved watching the birds at her bird feeders and going fishing with her family. Karola was always very drawn to nature and spent a lot of time watching nature documentaries. In 1971, she married Joe Self, Sr., in Atlanta, Georgia. Together they made their home in Chapman, Kansas, and raised three children. John T. Pence

James Michael McElwee, 61, of Zanesville, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, 
March 9, 2023, after a year-long battle with lung cancer. Jim was born on
 May 15, 1961, in Fresno, California to the late Amos and Joyce (McKee) 
McElwee. He would go on to live in Illinois, Kansas, and Ohio. He 
graduated from West Frankfort High School in 1980, and would work at 
many jobs before pursuing a passion of law enforcement. Jim was 
extremely proud of his service for the cities of Junction City, Kansas, 
Kankakee, Illinois, and Byesville, Ohio. He would end his working days 
as a security guard at Boeing in Newark, Ohio.

Jim enjoyed many hobbies, foremost of which were his cars. You could 
see him at many car shows throughout the year in his 1977 Corvette or 
his 1985 Camaro. Jim was also an exceptional dancer and loved disco 
music.

Jim was married to Lisa Durben (Rasmussen) in 1985, and was a 
wonderful father to two children, Ian McElwee (Kimberly) of Cambridge, 
and Britton McElwee (Stephanie Dulude) of Zanesville. He married Theresa
 (Moeller) McElwee in 2008, and blended their families as a caring 
step-father to Keith Moeller (Jennifer), Amee Bertke (Phil), and Melinda
 Moeller. He is survived by one sister: Patricia Irvin (James), and two 
brothers: Raymond Laws (Paula), and Charles McElwee (Penny), and 11 
grandchildren.

Eric W. Pishney, age 51, of Blue Rapids, passed away on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at his parent’s home surrounded by his family.

Eric
 was born October 2, 1971, at Marysville, to Doug and Becky (Pierce) 
Pishney.&nbsp; He graduated from Valley Heights High School in 1990.&nbsp; He then
 attended Kansas State University for two years.&nbsp; On May 26, 2007, he 
married Christina L. Tennyson.

Eric
 was a Machine Programmer for Landoll Corporation in Marysville.&nbsp; He had
 also worked at Abbott Aluminum in Riley County.&nbsp; He was a member of the
 Blue Rapids United Methodist Church.

During
 the early 2000’s, he operated a karaoke and DJ service.&nbsp; He enjoyed 
performing the song “Johnny Be Good.”&nbsp; After learning he had cancer the 
song “Live Like You Are Dying” meant a lot to him.

Survivors
 include his wife Chris, their daughter Kourtnee Pishney, his parents, 
Doug and Becky Pishney, a sister Holly Pishney, aunts and uncles: Kay 
Crowder, Addie (Charles) Ward, Tom (Marie) Pierce and Carl (Tina) 
Pierce, along with many cousins.

Preceding
 Eric in death are his grandparents; Will and Jane Pishney, and Lester 
and Dorothy Pierce; an uncle Bill Crowder; aunt Janie Pierce; and cousin

Eric Pishney

Theresa (Kandt) Lorson, 93, of rural Hope, died Wed., March 8, 2023,&nbsp; at Via Christi, Manhattan surrounded by family.  She was born on the 
family farm in the Shady Brook Community, rural Herington, Kansas to 
Heinrich Victor Edward and Sophia (Stroda) Kandt.  She attended the 
Union District 18 country school and graduated from Woodbine High School
 where she excelled in track, specialized in speech and journalism, and 
graduated as salutatorian, class of 1947.  After graduation, she worked 
for six months as a maid in the Junction City Hospital, followed by 
working two years in payroll and merchandise accounting at United 
Utilities in Abilene.

On October 15, 1949, she was 
united in marriage to Paul Lorson at St. John Catholic Church in 
Herington.  He preceded her in death June 13, 2002.  After marriage, 
they lived their entire lives on their farm near Hope.  They were 
inseparable and loved to dance, fish, hunt, and travel together.  They 
also worked side by side in almost everything including fixing fences, 
planting, and harvesting crops, working with the sheep before switching 
to cattle.  Paul was an electrician and together they owned and operated
 Lorson Electric where, for many years, they also manufactured 
Handy-Dandy welders and shipped them throughout the U.S.  Manufacturing 
began in their farm shop where they worked every chance between farming 
duties and late into the night building the welders after putting the 
kids to bed.  After moving the shop into Hope and hiring more help, she 
served only as the secretary and treasurer for the electric and welder 
business.  They also raised registered black German Shepherd dogs for 
many years, shipping them all over the U.S., many for placement in 
sheriff and police departments.  Theresa was a Tupperware dealer for 
five years, during which she was once named ‘Dealer of the Year.’  She 
drove a 45-passenger school bus for Hope Rural Vista School District 481
 for eighteen years, owned and operated the Hope Laundromat for nineteen
 years and was a National Weather Service observer for twenty years.  
Lastly, from July, 1991 thru December, 2020, she was an assistant at the
 Carlson-Becker Funeral Home in Hope.

In December 1953, she was chosen to represent Hope, Kansas, on Bob Hope’s first 
television “Christmas Special” in Hollywood, California, along with four
 other young ladies from towns named Hope in other states.  With all 
expenses paid by the JELLO company, Theresa, Paul, and three-month old 
infant, flew to Hollywood for a week to sightsee, have dinner with Bob 
Hope and his wife, Dolores, and prepare for attending the show, 
returning home in time for Christmas.  At the time, the television 
dealer owned the only TV in Hope, Kansas, so anyone who wanted to watch 
the program traveled to friends’ and relatives’ homes elsewhere who had 
television sets.

Theresa was an active member of St. 
Philip Catholic Church, Altar Society, National Council of Catholic 
Women, Young Farm Wives and Hope Community Historical Association.  She 
was one of the historians for St. Phillip Catholic Church and sang in 
the choir.  In 1986, she co-compiled the more than 200-page book on the 
history of Hope entitled “A Century of Hope." She also enjoyed various 
writing styles and opportunities ranging from creating readings 
presented by her children at school contests to articles for local 
newspapers.  Through it all, Theresa’s family always came first.

Survivors
 are three sons, Phillip Lorson, Hope; Eric Lorson, Salina; Barry 
Lorson, Hope; five daughters, Rita (Joseph) Sutcliffe, Firestone, 
Colorado; Sheila (Lanny) Mai, Wichita; Denise (Rex) Sageser, Wichita; 
Diana (Dennis) Okruhlik, Topeka; Maria (Clyde) Harmon, Lenexa; two 
brothers, Keith (Elsie) Kandt, Lindsborg; Robert (Alicia) Kandt, 
Wichita; sister-in-law, Joan Kandt, Wichita; twenty grandchildren, 
thirty-one great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.  Also 
preceding her in death were her parents, daughter-in-law, Debra, three 
brothers, Edward, Elmer and Kenneth Kandt, sisters, Berneice DeWitt and 
Arlene McWhirter, brothers-in-law, Dennis DeWitt and Eugene McWhirter, 
and sister-in-law, Alo Jean Kandt.

Following cremation,
 a rosary and Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Philip 
Catholic Church – Hope at 10:30 am, Wednesday, March 15, 2023, with Fr. 
George Chalbhagam and Fr. Peter O’Donnell officiating.  Burial will be 
in St. Philip Cemetery, Hope followed by family visitation at the Hope 
Catholic Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be 
made to St. Philip Cemetery, St Philip Catholic Church, Catholic 
Charities, or donor’s choice.

 other young ladies from towns named Hope in other states. With all 
expenses paid by the JELLO company, Theresa, Paul, and three-month old 
infant, flew to Hollywood for a week to sightsee, have dinner with Bob 
Hope and his wife, Dolores, and prepare for attending the show, 
returning home in time for Christmas. At the time, the television 
dealer owned the only TV in Hope, Kansas, so anyone who wanted to watch 
the program traveled to friends’ and relatives’ homes elsewhere who had 
television sets.Theresa was an active member of St. 
Philip Catholic Church, Altar Society, National Council of Catholic 
Women, Young Farm Wives and Hope Community Historical Association. She 
was one of the historians for St. Phillip Catholic Church and sang in 
the choir. In 1986, she co-compiled the more than 200-page book on the 
history of Hope entitled “A Century of Hope." She also enjoyed various 
writing styles and opportunities ranging from creating readings 
presented by her children at school contests to articles for local 
newspapers. Through it all, Theresa’s family always came first.Survivors
 are three sons, Phillip Lorson, Hope; Eric Lorson, Salina; Barry 
Lorson, Hope; five daughters, Rita (Joseph) Sutcliffe, Firestone, 
Colorado; Sheila (Lanny) Mai, Wichita; Denise (Rex) Sageser, Wichita; 
Diana (Dennis) Okruhlik, Topeka; Maria (Clyde) Harmon, Lenexa; two 
brothers, Keith (Elsie) Kandt, Lindsborg; Robert (Alicia) Kandt, 
Wichita; sister-in-law, Joan Kandt, Wichita; twenty grandchildren, 
thirty-one great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Also 
preceding her in death were her parents, daughter-in-law, Debra, three 
brothers, Edward, Elmer and Kenneth Kandt, sisters, Berneice DeWitt and 
Arlene McWhirter, brothers-in-law, Dennis DeWitt and Eugene McWhirter, 
and sister-in-law, Alo Jean Kandt.Following cremation,
 a rosary and Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Philip 
Catholic Church – Hope at 10:30 am, Wednesday, March 15, 2023, with Fr. 
George Chalbhagam and Fr. Peter O’Donnell officiating. Burial will be 
in St. Philip Cemetery, Hope followed by family visitation at the Hope 
Catholic Hall.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be 
made to St. Philip Cemetery, St Philip Catholic Church, Catholic 
Charities, or donor’s choice.

Theresa (Kandt) Lorson

Edna A. Pientka passed into the arms of Jesus March 8th at Salina 
Regional Hospital, surrounded by family. She was born June 19th, 1934,&nbsp; near Garden City, Kansas, to Anton and Mary (Wassinger) Werth. 
Edna was the youngest of 15 children. Her father died in the 1936 dust 
storms. The family moved to Salina at the beginning of Edna’s fourth 
grade, where she met her lifelong friend Mavis (Sandquist) Davis. Edna 
attended school through Sacred Heart High School, working part time at 
St. John’s Hospital from eighth grade until marriage. 
Edna married John Pientka on November 22nd, 1952. All of their married 
life was spent in Abilene. John passed away February 23rd, 2018. Edna

Edna A. Pientka 

Harry D. Orbison, age 88, of Manhattan, died Monday March 6, 2023, at 
the Valley View Senior Life Retirement Community in Junction City, 
Kansas.

Harry was born on September 13, 1934, in Oswego,
 Kansas, the son of Elber and Naomi (Gore) Orbison.  He grew up in 
Pittsburg, Kansas area and graduated from Pittsburg High School with the
 class of 1952.  Harry then attended Pittsburg State University and was 
in the ROTC Program at Pitt State.  He earned his Bachelors Degree in 
Mechanical Engineering.

Following his graduation from 
Pitt State, he entered the U.S. Army.  He served for 2 years, he then 
attended Kansas State University and earned his Bachelors Degree in 
Architecture.  After working for an architecture firm for a couple of 
years, Harry joined the US Army Corps of Engineering.  He worked there 
until his retirement in 1981 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Then 
Harry took a job working in Civil Service at Fort Riley as director of 
facilities.  He officially retired in January of 1997.

On
 May 27, 1955, in Pittsburg, Kansas, Harry was united in marriage to 
Belva Jo “BJ” Goodall.  She preceded him in death on July 27, 2010.

Harry
 and BJ were members of the St. Isidore’s Catholic Student Center in 
Manhattan.  Harry enjoyed being part of the church activities.  Harry 
enjoyed the outdoors and being with his animals.  He loved his horses, 
dogs, and wildlife of all kinds.  Living out in the Deep Creek Area, 
there was room for all the animals Harry took care of.  Couple of his 
favorite activities were wood working and being a hobby farmer.

The
 KSU College of Veterinary Medicine always took care of the horses and 
dogs and animals Harry and BJ had.  He and Bj appreciated the college 
and they were proud supporters and made sure to give what they could for
 the school to provide care for all the animals in need.  Harry knew the
 staff at the college and he will be missed by them all.  One of his 
last gifts was to make sure a new surgical clinic will be built for the 
college, he wanted to honor his wife BJ, by having part of the clinic 
with her name on it.  He and BJ will always be thankful for the College 
of Vet Medicine.

In addition to being a member of the 
St. Isidore’s Catholic Student Center, Harry was a member of the 
American Legion, the VFW, the KSU Presidents Club, KSU Alumni 
Association, KSU Land Grant Legacy, The Riley County Humane Society, 
Bishops Circle, Friends of the St. Isidore’s Society and Legacy Society,
 and the Humane Society of the US.

Harry is survived by
 his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Trudy and Ed Sims, of Manhattan, 
and his three nephews: Tyler Sims, Ian Rydzel, and Craig Rydzel.

The
 family will greet friends during a visitation from 6:00 until 7:30p.m. 
Friday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan.  A 
Wake Service will follow the visitation at the funeral home at 7:30p.m. 
on Friday March 10, 2023.

Mass of the Christian Burial 
will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday March 11, 2023, at the St. Isidore’s 
Catholic Student Center, 711 Denison in Manhattan.  Interment with full 
military honors will follow at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in 
Manhattan.

Memorial contributions in memory of Harry 
are suggested to the Riley County Humane Society or the KSU Foundation -
 to be used for the College of Veterinary Medicine.  Contributions may

Linda Lou DeWees, 76, of Manhattan, KS passed away Thursday, March 2, 2023. Linda was born in Wichita, Kansas on March 2, 1947, the daughter of the late Levi R. and Theresa Ann (Belick) DeWees.

Linda was an educator in numerous schools and was a teacher at the time of her retirement from Topeka West High School. She graduated from Norton High School in Norton, Kansas and from Ft. Hays State University in Hays, Kansas where she received two master degrees in Home Economics and Education Administration. She Was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Manhattan where she was active in the Sanctuary Choir.

Linda is survived by a daughter, Diana Lynn Melody, of Wilmington, Delaware; and a son, Derek, and his wife Denise, Lawson, of Wichita. Linda is also survived by her grandson, Sean Melody, also of Wilmington, Delaware; and her sister, Susan Welsh, of Lincoln Nebraska.

Richard Lee “Dick” Short, 83, passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2023, under the care and love of staff and residents at Providence Homes Plus in Topeka. He was a long-time resident of the Paxico area.

Dick was born May 27, 1939, on the" Harvey Ranch" in Plymouth, Kansas, the son of Fred and Maggie (Murphy) Short. He attended the local grade school and graduated from Emporia High School in 1957. Dick was an electrical lineman and worked for Kansas Power and Light Company in 1962 and PAR Electrical Contractors until his retirement in 2004. Dick was a member of the IBEW Local Union #304.

Dick embodied the true cowboy spirit and that was evident to everyone that met him. He was firm, but always fair. He would be the first one to lend a hand when others needed help. He was loyal to his friends and loving to his family. He never backed down from a challenge, and he had a true moral compass for right and wrong. Dick was the epitome of a man’s man. If there was an element of danger, he was ready to go! In his younger days he enjoyed racing motorcycles and was a member of the KMSA motorcycle club. It also wasn’t unusual to find him hunting rattlesnakes in the pasture. He was a champion competitive bull rider in the National Old Timer's Rodeo Association, and was known for starting each ride with a lit cigarette in his mouth that would still be in place as he was bucked from the animal. Dick loved working with his livestock in his cattle operation, always with his favorite dog by his side. He enjoyed camping, boating, fishing, shooting trap, and spending time with his beloved family. He loved shooting BB guns and riding horses with his grandchildren, and listening to them giggle as he pulled them through the snow on sleds or on a tube behind his pontoon boat. Dick was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in McFarland and caretaker for the Bethlehem Cemetery on Snokomo Road for many years.

Dick married Mary Ann Schultz in September of 1958. They had five children and were later divorced. He then married Sally Edelblute Vorhies on July 16, 1983. She survives.

Dick is survived by his children; Kevin Short (Sandra), Tecumseh, Lisa Zeller (Dan), Paxico, Lori “Guss” Short, Topeka; his stepchildren; Rick Vorhies (Lori) and Angela Nightingale (Jeff), both of Olathe; his daughters-in-law, Jacque Henne (Lowell), Paxico, Janice Short, Topeka; his brother, Morris “Frosty” Short (Debbie), Derby; his sister-in-law, Marjorie Short; Texas; fifteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Dick was preceded in death by his sons, Jeff and Steve Short; his grandchildren, Robbie Zick, Luke Short, and Amber Heigert; his sister Helen Strome, brothers Kenneth, Clayton, Bill, and infant Fred; his brother-in-law, Dick Edelblute and sister-in-law, Peggy Ables.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, March 13, 2023, at Trinity Lutheran Church in McFarland, Kansas. Reverend Terry DeGiovanni and Reverend Robert Grimm will be officiating. The family will greet friends on Sunday, March 12th, at the church, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Dick’s remains will be inurned at a later date in Bethlehem Cemetery. Richard Lee 'Dick' Short

Patrick J. Schmidt, 75, of Alta Vista, KS, passed away Sunday, March 5, 2023. He was born March 20, 1947, in Plainville, KS, the son of Fidelis and Albina (Hamerschmidt) Schmidt. Pat
 graduated from Plainville High School in 1965 and married Linda J. 
Clodfelter on September 3, 1966, the daughter of Lutie and Betty 
Clodfelter of Plainville, KS. Pat was the owner of a family 
operated business, Tri-City Carpets of Manhattan for three decades until
 retiring in 2008. He worked with many local builders and developers in 
the community and gained an incredible working and personal relationship
 with the people of Manhattan and surrounding communities. Pat 
enjoyed painting in his younger days and as his family grew, loved to 
spend time camping, snow skiing, traveling the world and exploring 
off-road trails in his dune buggy throughout Kansas and Colorado. He was
 very social and never short on conversation, usually with a 
quick-witted joke when he was out with family and friends, no matter the
 occasion. He was always passionate about music and turned to many 
different artists throughout the entirety of his life, whether it was a 
joyous time or times of hardship, his love of music created a common 
thread and connection with people close to him. Survivors 
include his wife, Linda Schmidt; sons, Tracy (Hillary) Schmidt of 
Manhattan, KS and Todd (Michelle) Schmidt of Allenhurst, GA; 
grandchildren, William Schmidt, Katie (Aaron) Plue, Kyler Schmidt, 
Kiefer Schmidt, Josh Thomas and two great grandchildren; brothers, 
Gerald Schmidt and Eugene Schmidt; twin sister, Patricia Roy; sisters, 
Kathy Holmes and Jackie Morgan; brother and sister-in-law Mike and Kathy
 Clodfelter. He was preceded in death by his parents. Honoring
 Pat’s request cremation is planned. No services have been scheduled at
 this time. A Celebration of Patrick’s Life will take place at a later

Clodfelter on September 3, 1966, the daughter of Lutie and Betty 
Clodfelter of Plainville, KS. Pat was the owner of a family 
operated business, Tri-City Carpets of Manhattan for three decades until
 retiring in 2008. He worked with many local builders and developers in 
the community and gained an incredible working and personal relationship
 with the people of Manhattan and surrounding communities. Pat 
enjoyed painting in his younger days and as his family grew, loved to 
spend time camping, snow skiing, traveling the world and exploring 
off-road trails in his dune buggy throughout Kansas and Colorado. He was
 very social and never short on conversation, usually with a 
quick-witted joke when he was out with family and friends, no matter the
 occasion. He was always passionate about music and turned to many 
different artists throughout the entirety of his life, whether it was a 
joyous time or times of hardship, his love of music created a common 
thread and connection with people close to him. Survivors 
include his wife, Linda Schmidt; sons, Tracy (Hillary) Schmidt of 
Manhattan, KS and Todd (Michelle) Schmidt of Allenhurst, GA; 
grandchildren, William Schmidt, Katie (Aaron) Plue, Kyler Schmidt, 
Kiefer Schmidt, Josh Thomas and two great grandchildren; brothers, 
Gerald Schmidt and Eugene Schmidt; twin sister, Patricia Roy; sisters, 
Kathy Holmes and Jackie Morgan; brother and sister-in-law Mike and Kathy
 Clodfelter. He was preceded in death by his parents. Honoring
 Pat’s request cremation is planned. No services have been scheduled at
 this time. A Celebration of Patrick’s Life will take place at a later

Patrick J. Schmidt

Nancy Gay (Speer) Goy passed away on Monday, March 6, 2023, at 
Meadowlark Hills Lyle House in Manhattan, Kansas, with family by her 
side. Nancy was born on July 22, 1935, in Quincy, Illinois, to Edward 
Henry and Eva Gay (Osborn) Detmer.

Nancy was a 1953 
graduate of Quincy High School.  In 1954, she married the late Raymond 
Eugene Speer.  They had two children, Raymond Eugene Speer Jr.  in 
1955, and Mark Edward Speer in 1958.  Later in life, she married Morris 
Pool “Pete” Goy in 1984. He preceded her in death in 2010.

Nancy’s
 sweet and kind way was legendary among her family and friends.  Her 
faith was strong, as she lived her life based firmly on Christian 
principles.

She was a bookkeeper in the Treasurer’s 
Office at the Sarpy County Courthouse in Papillion, NE. Nancy retired 
from there after 32 years in 2000. She was a faithful member and 
volunteer at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Omaha. Nancy was a member 
of the Nebraska Humane Society, Nebraska Admirals Association (service 
to the State of Nebraska appointed by the Governor), and the Omaha 
Walking Club.  She did volunteer work for a local senior center, and 
enjoyed traveling, visiting family, and walking at the Henry Doorley Zoo
 and Lauritzen Gardens.

Nancy is survived by son Mark 
(Pam) Speer of Manhattan, KS, two grandchildren: Katie (Dan) Rumsey of 
Dickinson, TX, and Kyle (Lissa) Speer of Meade, KS; three 
great-grandsons: Carson Rumsey, Blake Rumsey, and Slate Speer; three 
nieces: Pat (Fred) Detmer of Newcastle, WA, Susie Detmer of Bellevue, 
WA, and Barb (Mike) Cram of Rancho Mirage, CA; and two nephews, Sheldon 
(Marsha) McMillen of Omaha, NE, and Keith McMillen of Carthage, IL.  
Nancy is also survived by the large Goy family that was a very important
 part of her life for many years.

Preceding Nancy in 
death are her parents, brother Jack Detmer, both of her husbands,&nbsp; Raymond Speer Sr. and Pete Goy, and her son Raymond Speer Jr.

Graveside
 service for family will be Friday, March 24, 2023, at Evergreen 
Cemetery, Omaha, NE, with Reverend Father Keith Winton officiating.  A 
memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at 11:30 a.m.
 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 925 S. 84th St., Omaha, NE 68114.  A 
luncheon will follow the service.

Marcia Renee Boening

Darrel E. Haley of Pawling, New York, passed away January 9, 
2023, in Ridgefield, CT at the age of 78. Darrel was born February 11, 
1944, in Junction City, Kansas, to the late Gerald and Hazel (Baker) 
Haley. 

He spent the majority of his youth in Junction City enjoying his 
favorite activities such as playing baseball, trumpet, music, traveling,
 learning history, and between the ages of 12 and 16 worked delivering 
newspapers until he started his job in the newspaper office. Darrel 
graduated from Junction City High School in 1962. 

In 1964, Darrel joined
 the Navy where he started basic training in San Diego, CA. During his 
time in basic training, he marched playing the bugle. During his time in
 the Navy, he served two tours in Vietnam. He was also involved in Top 
Secret Communications under a pineapple field in Hawaii. Darrel was then
 stationed on USS Enterprise Aircraft Carrier and toured the Pacific 
Ocean for three years. 

While stationed in California, he met the love of
 his life Sharon Hunt in 1967. The two went on to marry in 1968 at St. 
Lawrence O’Toole Church in Brewster, NY. After the military, Darrel spent
 the majority of his career working as a Telephone Switchman for 
Verizon. During his beginning years as a switchman, he attended night 
school at West Connecticut State University, earning an Associate's 
Degree in History. 

Darrel is survived by his wife, Sharon (Hunt) Haley 
of Pawling, NY; his son &amp; daughter-in-law Christopher &amp; Michelle
 Haley of Valley Village, CA; his sister-in-law Michele Hunt of 
Brewster, NY; many nieces; as well as great nieces and nephews. Darrel 
was predeceased by his sister Sandra Jacobs.

A
 Memorial Service will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Tuesday April 
4, 2023, at Beecher Funeral Home at 1 Putnam Avenue Brewster, New York. A
 service will be held Wednesday, April 5, at 10:00 am at Beecher Funeral 
Home.

Another Celebration of life will be held in June of 2023 in Kansas. Details to follow at a later date.

Walter C. Harris was born November 6, 1926, in Junction City, Kansas, the 
son of Fred and Emma (Zernickow) Harris. He graduated from Dwight High 
School with the class of 1944. 
Walter served with the Army Air Corps Occupation Forces in Japan from 1944 – 1946 during WWII. 
On August 10, 1946, Walter was married to Virginia A. Stark of Alta Vista in San Antonia, Texas. 
Walter worked for Schilling Air Force Base from 1953 – 1965 with the 
Maintenance Aircraft Electrical Systems with the Department of Defense. 
 He then worked for Ft. Riley from 1965 – 1983 as an Electronic 
Supervisor. 
He enjoyed gardening, traveling in his RV coast to coast and Canada, 
family reunions, and loved homemade ice cream. Following his retirement
 from the Federal Government, Walter served on the Board of Directors 
for the Ottawa RRD. 
Walter passed away on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, at the Holiday Resort 
Health and Rehab in Salina at the age of 96. He is survived by his 
loving daughter Debra Bowers and her husband Robin of Marquette, Kansas,
 and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving
 wife Virginia on November 9, 2014, his brother Eldridge Harris, sisters
 Maryette Shuck, Ordella Liley, and his parents. 
Visitation will be from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at 
the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene, with the family 
receiving friends from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm. The family has selected 
cremation. His final resting place will be in the Humboldt Valley 
Cemetery near Junction City.

Linda Lou DeWees, 76, of Manhattan, KS passed away Thursday, March 2,
 2023. Linda was born in Wichita, Kansas on March 2, 1947, the daughter 
of the late Levi R. and Theresa Ann (Belick) DeWees.

Linda
 was an educator in numerous schools and was a teacher at the time of 
her retirement from Topeka West High School. She graduated from Norton 
High School in Norton, Kansas, and from  Fort Hays State University in 
Hays, Kansas, where she received   two master degrees in Home Economics 
and Education Administration.  She Was a member of the First United 
Methodist Church, Manhattan where she was active in the Sanctuary Choir.

 is  survived by a daughter, Diana Lynn Melody, of Wilmington, Delaware;
  and a son, Derek, and his wife Denise, Lawson, of Wichita. Linda is 
also survived by her grandson, Sean Melody, also of Wilmington, 
Delaware; and her sister, Susan Welsh, of Lincoln Nebraska.

morning, March 5th, 2023, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in 
Manhattan.  She worked as a supervisor at JC Penny in Manhattan and had 
 worked for insurance companies and steel mills in their offices in 
Rockport Illinois.

She was the widow of Stanley "Frank"
 Russell, whom she married at the St John's Lutheran Church at Dallas, 
TX, on October 7, 1922. On that date, November 23, 1945, the United 
States stopped rations after World War II. However, sugar rations still 
existed.  Evelyn was born in Union County, South Dakota, on October 7, 
1922, the daughter of the late Tillie (Erickson) Linton and Edgar Jasper
 Linton.  She was a high school graduate of Sterling, Illinois.  Upon 
graduation from high school, she joined the U.S. Navy and was discharged
 as a YEO/2nd Class during WW II.  Evelyn was a former member of the  
First Lutheran Church Manhattan where she taught Sunday School and was a
 former member of the EHU Stardusters.

Evelyn is  survived by three daughters, Virginia E Russell, of Manhattan, KS.

 Joann, wife of  Michael J. Gassmann, of Manhattan; Larraine K, wife of 
 Randy Blodgett, of Blackhawk, CO; two sons Terry Lee, husband of

Evelyn L. Russell

Herbert Dietrich “Herb” Ruebke, 81, died March 6, 2023, at Wesley 
Medical Center, Wichita. He was born May 6, 1941, in rural Pretty 
Prairie, to Henry H. and Agnes Marie (Krehbiel) Ruebke.

Herb graduated from Pretty Prairie High School.&nbsp; He worked as a 
machinist for Cessna, before retiring from Mega Manufacturing. Herb grew
 up on the family farm, helping his parents and siblings farm and 
operate the family business, Ruebke Orchard. &nbsp;After retirement, he ran 
his own lawn mowing business, continued to garden, and watched his 
favorite sports teams; KU basketball and Kansas City Chiefs. Herb also 
enjoyed training his dogs.&nbsp; He was an active member of Crestview Bible 
Church for over 40 years.

On June 4, 1977, Herb married Bonnie (Hess) Tylicki, at First Mennonite Church, Hutchinson.

Herb is survived by:&nbsp; his wife of almost 46 years, Bonnie of 
Hutchinson; sons, Troy Ruebke (Joni) of Manhattan, Brent Ruebke (Peggy) 
of Nickerson, and Jim Tylicki (Becky) of Sylvia; sisters, Ruth Stucky 
and Judith Lowdon (Corey); sister-in-law, Beatrice Ruebke; numerous 
grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; and his beloved
 dog, Tonya Lee.

He was preceded in death by:&nbsp; his parents; brother, John Ruebke; 
brother-in-law, Bob Stucky; and nephews, Donald Ruebke and Douglas 
Stucky.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 11, 2023, at 
Crestview Bible Church, 2401 N. Halstead, Hutchinson, with Pastor Phil 
Auxier officiating.&nbsp; Friends may sign his book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 
p.m. Thursday and 9:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, with the family present

Jesse V. Downs, 99, of Salina, passed away, Sunday, 
March 5, 2023, at Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp; He was born in 
Industry, Kansas, to Jesse C. and Verna F. (Loader) Downs, on January 
15, 1924.&nbsp; He graduated Salina High School in 1942 and joined the Army 
Air Force, that same year.&nbsp; He served for four years during World War 
II.&nbsp; On November 3, 1946, Jesse married Margaret Elizabeth Burk, in 
Wichita, Kansas.&nbsp; They were married and inseparable for 74 years. &nbsp;

He is survived by his children, Cheryl Utech (James), of Manhattan, 
Stephen Downs (Rosalie), of Colorado Springs, and Greg Downs (Eileen), 
of Hutchinson; one sister, Doris Tuttle, of Colorado Springs; 
grandchildren, Kimberly Splawn (Robert), Melissa Kendall (Jeremy), Jesse
 A. Downs (Dana), Nancy Erickson (Lewis), James M. Utech (Lora), David 
Green (Kathleen); 14 great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be Monday, May 1, 2023, in Roselawn Memorial Park, Salina. &nbsp;
