Reta Louise Shipley Newman was born 
in Newkirk, Oklahoma, December the 6th, 1931. The second of eight 
children to Frank and Vida Shipley. Her father was a long time pastor 
for the Free Methodist Church in the Oklahoma Conference. He also did 
evangelistic work. As a result of that their family lived in many places
 in Oklahoma. The longest being Enid Oklahoma.

Attending
 one of those Churches was a gentleman named Leland Newman. In 1952,&nbsp; Leland and Reta were united in Marriage. They had four Sons, Milton 
Linn, Leland Eugene, Bent Lee, and Kevin Jay.&nbsp; &nbsp;Reta was a homemaker and
 spent her time raising their children. In 1969 Leland was employed by Graves Truck Line and they moved to Manhattan, Kansas. It was here that
 Reta opened a Ceramic Shop in their home. She taught Ceramic lessons 
for 24 years. She and Leland also sold their hand made pottery to many 
of the Florists in the surrounding Cities for 16 years until they 
retired in 1993.

Leland and Reta were both active 
members of The Free Methodist Church working in many tasks of the 
church. Reta taught Sunday school for 50 years, was Sunday School 
Superintendent for several years as well as Director of Children’s 
Department while raising her family.

Reta loved all 
kinds of sewing and Crafts. She loved doing things with her hands. She 
had lots of Hobbies and enjoyed sharing them with other people. One of 
her best loved hobbies was making Quilts. All of her Great Grandchildren
 got a quilt made by Reta as well as other crafts she made.

Reta
 is a member of the “Daughters of the American Revolution”.&nbsp;&nbsp;Reta 
enjoyed her family and looked forward to getting them together. She has 
11 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

Preceding 
her in death are her husband, parents, 3 sisters Bonnie, Betty and 
Alice, 3 brothers Gene, Merlin and Verlyn. One brother Vern and four 
sons and their wives survive her, Linn and Linda of Wamego, Eugene and 
Cindy of St. George, Brent and Linda of Louisiana Mo, and Kevin and 
Kathy of Lee's Summit Mo.

Reta Louise Shipley Newman

Max McAdams, 90, of Clay Center, died on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at 
the Liberty Place in Clay Center, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on November 13, 
1932, in Clyde, Kansas, the son of Floyd and Evelyn (Gepner) McAdams.

Max grew up in the Morganville area, attending the Eagle Bend, 
Lincoln and Morganville schools, graduating from Morganville High School
 in 1950.&nbsp; He served 2 years in the U.S. Army.&nbsp; Max married Mary Ann 
Carlson on April 13, 1952, and the couple farmed in Clay and Cloud 
Counties until moving to Clay Center in 1993.&nbsp; Mary Ann preceded him in 
death on July 10, 2020.&nbsp; Max is also preceded in death by parents and his sister, Charlotte Peterson.

He was a past director of C&amp;R Credit Union, Farmer’s Union COOP and a past member and trustee of the Clay Center Elks Club.

Survivors include his daughters, Debra and husband, Ernie Kovarik of 
Topeka, Kansas and Deirdre and husband, Bob Moore of Salina, Kansas; 
son, Rodney and wife Caryn McAdams of Morganville, Kansas, 5 
grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Graveside memorial Services will be held on Monday, March 6, 2023, at 1:30PM at the Bloom Cemetery in Clay County, Kansas.

Memorials may be made to the Liberty Place or Meadowlark Hospice c/o the funeral home.

Max McAdams

In the comfort of her home with her family, Frances Marie (Werth) Riddle, 82, passed away on March 1, 2023.

Frances,&nbsp; "Fran," was born in Schoenchen, Kansas, to Alfred and Juletta Werth, 
decedents of Alex and Bernadette Werth.  Her family moved to Salina in 
1942, where she attended and graduated from Salina Sacred Heart.  
Following graduation, Fran met and married, Carl Riddle.  Together, they
 raised five children who were the center of their universe.  Always the
 selfless and proud mother, she supported each child on their paths to 
adulthood, never missing an opportunity to volunteer for one of their 
many activities including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Salina Silver Sabres 
Drum and Bugle Corps, Marching Band, sports, or their other interests.

As
 her family matured, Fran began a career at Beech Aircraft eventually 
moving to Wichita where she retired as a crew chief in the Avionics 
Department after thirty years of service.  Never one to sit idle, Fran 
was an excellent cook while never missing an opportunity to prepare a 
family feast, a meal for a sick friend, or bake a pie for any cause.  
She was a member of Wichita Central Christian Church where she enjoyed 
being a member of the Encouragers Class and the church choir.  She was 
an avid K-State fan and a member of the Good Time Cloggers, all while 
continuing a second work career at Derby Steele Technologies before 
officially retiring and returning to Salina.

Fran above
 all else, loved and served the Lord while cherishing many friendships 
she made through the Church and her faith.  After retiring and returning
 to Salina, she became a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church while 
often attending daily mass at one of the three Catholic churches in 
Salina.

She is survived by her children, Michael 
(Marnita) Riddle of Duluth, Georgia, Catherine (Don) Craig of Oronogo, 
Missouri, Mark Riddle of Seven Hills, Ohio, Theresa Riddle-Clark of 
Hays, Kansas, and Cindy (David) Turner of Salina, Kansas.  Fran is also 
survived by six grandchildren, Chris and Jeff Boaz, Austin and Emily 
Riddle (Tyler Rowson), and Zach and Zeb Turner  (Sadie Farris); and 
great-grandchildren, Saylor, Chaser and Knox Boaz.  Fran was a devoted 
sister to LaDonna (Bob) Kasparek and brother, Keith (Deby) Werth. Other 
cherished members of Fran’s extended family include Karl Boaz, Jason 
Clark, numerous nieces and nephews, and life long friend, Verna Bender.

She
 is preceded in death by her parents, brother, Wayne Werth, sister, 
Stella Werth, and a great granddaughter, Scarlett Riddle-Rowson.

Visitation
 will be on Sunday, March 5, 2023, at Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home, 
500 S. Ohio St. from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm, with the Rosary beginning at 
6:00 pm.   A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Elizabeth Ann 
Seton Church, 1000 Burr Oak Lane, on March 6, 2023, at 10:00 am, with 
Father Keith Weber officiating.  Burial will follow at the Mt. Calvary 
Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Basement Renovation Project, in care of the funeral home.

Frances 'Fran' Marie Riddle

Dad was the consummate storyteller. When mom realized, his memories were beginning to fade, she encouraged him to write down his experiences. What follows are three stories that set his life’s direction.

I was born October 25, 1929, in a farmhouse located 3 miles northwest of the small town of Princeton, Kansas. It was a simpler time but very challenging for my mother and father. In fact, the day before I arrived, the stock market had crashed signaling the start of the great depression. We lived frugally without indoor plumbing, used an outhouse, stored our food in a root cellar that doubled as a tornado shelter and had one horse Philip, who plowed the fields and pulled our buggy when we went to Mass on Sunday.

Dad farmed a one hundred sixty-acre homestead that he bought from my Grandpa Strafuss who purchased it after immigrating to America from Austria. My siblings and I all attended the one room, one teacher Valley View schoolhouse, located 1 mile from home, that we walked to and from every school day.

In early 1944, our father heard that a large airplane had made an emergency landing in a farmer’s field about 10 miles east of our farm. That next Sunday, Dad drove the family to the site so we could see the massive Boeing B-29 laying on its belly. The landing gears were in the up position and all 4 propellers were bent and twisted but otherwise it was not damaged. I was amazed at the size of the plane which at the time was the largest in the world. Boeing had just launched the plane a couple of years earlier and in the following year, it would drop the atomic bomb to end WW2.

We made almost daily visits to the airplane and watched the engineers eventually lift the plane, extend the gears, and install 4 new engines and propellers. At the same time, bulldozers were carving out a dirt runway on our neighbor’s farmland. It was a Sunday when the airplane was scheduled to take off, so Dad took the entire family to watch the event which by now had drawn large crowds. It truly was an unforgettable event first hearing the massive engines rumble to life then seeing the massive dust clouds form behind the airplane as it started to move forward slowly at first and then finally, just before the end of the dirt runway, lifted into the air.

From that experience, I knew I had to find a way for aviation to be a part of my life. I never would have dreamed that within a few years, I would be a navigation instrument technician for B-29’s stationed at Eielson Air Force base, Alaska. Our missions required skirting the border between Russia and the United States sampling the air to track the progress Russia was making developing their own atomic bomb. There were many 15-hour flights when we returned to base with one engine shut down that brought back my memory of the B-29 that was forced to land near our Princeton farmstead.

When I turned 21, my parents gave me the opportunity to plant and share crop profits on land located in the Kansas River basin near Ogden, KS. I planted 60 acres of wheat in the fall and 80 acres of corn in the spring. By midsummer the wheat was headed and getting near harvest time. The corn was 4 to 5 foot high, and I had just cultivated it for the last time when I saw storm clouds again approaching from the west. It had been unusually wet in some parts of Kansas that summer. But what came next would change the course of my life’s work.

The flooding started to the west in Hays Kansas which fed into the Kansas River. In would eventually be recorded that the river crested to its highest level ever near Manhattan with the water four feet deep on 4th and Poyntz. Every day I would ride horseback to a bluff overlooking my wheat and corn fields and watch the river slowly overtaking my crops that I had hoped to harvest. It wasn’t long before I discovered the high and rapid moving water had cut a new river channel through my entire field. I witnessed all the green corn and golden wheat fields disappear along with my dreams of becoming a farmer.

I was very discouraged and without consulting anyone, decided to join the US Airforce.

Mom and dad were downhearted that I had decided to enlist but I was only concerned with passing the physical because I had accidentally cut off half of my left-hand index finger when I was 3 years old when playing with an upside-down lawnmower. So, on December 5th, I bussed to Kansas City, was given a brief physical (which I passed) and assigned a service number with barked instructions “Don’t ever ever forget it”. We then walked to the Kansas City Union Station where I boarded a train bound for San Antonio, Texas, and Lackland Air Force Base.

After I completed Aircraft and Engine schooling in Texas, I was sent to Chanute A.F.B. in Champaign Ill., to attend the Aircraft Instrument Overhaul and Repair School. I made a friend there who loved to attend the dances at the USO club on the base. I attended a few of these dances and there were always a lot of girls at the dance. Because I never drank, some considered me shy. But when I saw my future wife from across the dance floor, I remember thinking she was pretty in her brightly colored poodle skirt. After being introduced, what I liked about her the most was her cheerfulness and that she was from a small town south of Herrington Kansas. We danced all night and then agreed to meet the next night for a movie. Before she returned to Kansas two days later, we had exchanged addresses and agreed to write each other, she from Wichita, where she worked for Boeing, and me from a base Alaska to which I had just been assigned.

I also remember that Rita had a Chartreuse colored Ford convertible with blue diamond taillight inserts and twin Smitty exhaust pipes. It was a sharp car. Years later, after I proposed, her brother Valerian suggested she sell her car to him before we get married to ensure I had true intentions. Besides being a cool car, it was very durable as we drove that car to Alaska after we were married.

As far as I can remember, I worked two jobs; one full time job in civil service where I retired in 1990 as head of operations for Fort Riley and a second part time job as an aircraft mechanic at the Manhattan Airport. The first job covered all the bills, and the part time job allowed our boys to attend Catholic schools and I to pursue my love of aviation as a pilot and rebuilding older airplanes with my boys.

Dad always wanted his sons to find and pursue their own dreams – not his. As a father, he realized that his sons would follow his example more readily than they would follow his advice and so he lived his life accordingly.

Rita Marie, Herman’s’ wife of 62 years, passed in 2016. They are survived by 6 sons (Ben, Mark, Dan, David, Jim, and Jon), 16 grandchildren, 9 Great-grandchildren and three of dad’s sisters; Dorothy Finan, Irene Wienck and Esther Schultz.

Herman passed away on February 24th at the age of 93.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 5:30 until 7:00p.m. Sunday March 5, 2023 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan. The Rosary will be held at 7:00p.m. following the visitation on Sunday at the funeral home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday March 6, 2023 at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan. Graveside Services will be held at 3:00p.m. Monday March 6, 2023 at the Pilsen Cemetery in Pilsen, Kansas.

Before she returned to Kansas two days later, we had exchanged addresses and agreed to write each other, she from Wichita, where she worked for Boeing, and me from a base Alaska to which I had just been assigned.I also remember that Rita had a Chartreuse colored Ford convertible with blue diamond taillight inserts and twin Smitty exhaust pipes. It was a sharp car. Years later, after I proposed, her brother Valerian suggested she sell her car to him before we get married to ensure I had true intentions. Besides being a cool car, it was very durable as we drove that car to Alaska after we were married.As far as I can remember, I worked two jobs; one full time job in civil service where I retired in 1990 as head of operations for Fort Riley and a second part time job as an aircraft mechanic at the Manhattan Airport. The first job covered all the bills, and the part time job allowed our boys to attend Catholic schools and I to pursue my love of aviation as a pilot and rebuilding older airplanes with my boys.Dad always wanted his sons to find and pursue their own dreams – not his. As a father, he realized that his sons would follow his example more readily than they would follow his advice and so he lived his life accordingly.Rita Marie, Herman’s’ wife of 62 years, passed in 2016. They are survived by 6 sons (Ben, Mark, Dan, David, Jim, and Jon), 16 grandchildren, 9 Great-grandchildren and three of dad’s sisters; Dorothy Finan, Irene Wienck and Esther Schultz.Herman passed away on February 24th at the age of 93.The family will greet friends during a visitation from 5:30 until 7:00p.m. Sunday March 5, 2023 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan. She has resided at the Salina Presbyterian Manor the last four years where she made many friends and especially enjoyed singing in the Manor Choir. She was a 1962 graduate of Chapman High School. Kathleen Avis Nagely

Lance Brandon Gantenbein's mortal soul entered eternity on Sunday, February 26th 2023, on the 6th floor of the University of Kansas Intensive Care Transplant Unit after a 12 day fight to save his life ended. Lance’s doctors and specialists said it would take a miracle to save his life. Our miracle came on Friday morning when Lance woke up and was able to communicate by nodding yes and no to questions, and squeezing our hands when asked to. This allowed a 36 hour window so family and friends could say their final goodbyes which we know Lance was grateful. Life began for Lance on April 13, 1987, being born 10 minutes after arriving at the Salina Regional Hospital. Just like Lance to give us an early arrival and a much too early exit. Lance’s philosophy, much like his favorite comedian, George Carlin, was always leave early when your audience wants more. He certainly did that.

Lance’s passion for life could be seen through the things he loved which, aside from family and friends, included Lawrence, Kansas. He jokingly called it his town and said someday he would be the mayor to which his dad said why stop there.

When it came to sports, Lance cheered for the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves, and KU basketball. He loved his first dog, a black lab named Pepper and later his beloved daschunds, Duke and Macy. Lance enjoyed golfing, hunting, and fishing, as well as old movies, classic sitcoms, and of course Pink Floyd. He often said “if you're not going to listen to ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ from start to finish then not to bother putting it on the turntable.” Lance had an opinion on every subject and was willing to debate at anytime. He’d listen to your side, tell you you’re wrong, and get back to his agenda.

Just like so many of us, searching for our own questions about life, we hope that Lance has found his answers. He believed that if we all worked as hard to get along, as we do to divide and destroy countries, political parties, races, and religions, the world would be so much better off. Lance had a heart of gold and if he was your friend, you had a friend for life. He loved to help people more than anything and confessed to a dear friend in a text message that in his final minutes, he’ll wished he had helped more people. By donating his 35 year old heart to a recipient in need, his wish will come true. May we all pay it forward for Lance, while we still have a chance. Have faith and hope that it will do as much for you as it will for the person you’re helping.

Lance is survived by his parents, Gary and Melinda, of Hope, his sister, Brandi, of Abilene, Aunt Kayla and Uncle Dave Ascher, cousins Michael (Nicole) all of Salina, and Julie (Miron), Kansas City. He was preceded in death by all four grandparents Dale and Fern Gantenbein, and Melvin and Dora Brown.

Pablo Armendariz, an amazing husband, father, and grandfather went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 28, 2023 following a long battle with Alzheimer’s. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Julieta, his sons Victor (Julie), Pablo Jr, Robert, Daniel (Shana) Armendariz and daughter Debby (Walter) Brown and six grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, 11 siblings and granddaughter Anna Armendariz. Pablo was born in Madera, Chihuahua Mexico, February 14, 1936, the youngest of 12 siblings. Born in a poor small community he sought work in the United States. At the age of 17 he joined Bracero, the migrant worker program implemented to supply American farmers with agricultural workers. He worked throughout the western United States picking all types of produce including cotton in Texas, apples in Washington, potatoes in Oregon, and lettuce in California. In 1956, he was contracted to work for John Britt, a farmer in Manhattan, Kansas. When his contract expired, “Mister John,” as he was always called, helped Pablo get his residency documents to stay in the United States. He was then able to help his brothers Romulo and Benjamin move to Kansas to work on the farm with Mister John. Pablo eventually applied for and received his U.S. Citizenship. In 1973, Pablo and his brothers, along with Richard Britt, purchased the farm and for many years ran a vegetable market and wholesale produce business. In 1982 Pablo and his brothers started Armendariz Gardens, a farm and market in Wamego, Kansas. Pablo and his wife Julieta operated the business until 2018. Pablo’s greatest passion was hunting deer and game birds in Kansas as well as enjoying extended game hunts in Mexico. He lived life with contagious joy and a lighthearted spirit. He never met anyone that he would not talk to and make friends with immediately. He will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Calvin Dee Davis went to meet the Lord February 25, 2023 surrounded by all his family. He was born February 23, 1937 in Elmo, Kansas to George Edward Davis and Irene Margaret (Shane) Davis. Calvin was married to Jo Ann Scott May 12, 1956 and they had 3 daughters. On October 11, 1956 he hired on the Rock Isalnd as a brakeman. After the Rock Island ceased operations he worked as a brakeman and conductor for Cotton Belt and SSW, conductor for Southern Pacific and retired February 14, 1999 as an engineer for the Union Pacific Railroad. He was the last living charter member of the Hope Saddle Club. He loved trading horses – he would by high and sell low! He loved roping, trailrides, shodeos and helping people move cattle. Calvin was also a member of the Dickinson County Sherriff Posse. Camping was one of his favorite pastimes from homemade campers to fifth-wheels. He and Jo Ann loved camping in Branson with friends and fishing off the pontoon at Milford Lake. His family was very important to him. Even with his work schedule he made time to coach the girls' softball team, attend all their sporting and school events and help with many 4-H projects. He also attended many grandchildren's sporting events. Calvin was a member of the Hope United Methodist Church. He was on the USD 481 school board, Hope City Council and served as Hope Mayor for several years. He served as a 4-H horse project leader and a boy scout leader. He is survived by his wife of 66 years Jo Ann, daughters Brenda (Mark) Meuli, Becky (Dave) Drury and Bobbie (Jeff) Hostetter, 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The family has chosen cremation. A memorial service for Calvin will be held at a later date. The family suggests memorials be given to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society or to the Hope United Methodist Church. Jeanetta was married to Ira E. Jones on March 29, 1972, in Junction 
City, Kansas. Ira was a loving and caring husband until his death.

Genevieve C. Lenherr passed away on Sunday, February 26, 2023, in Topeka.

She was born on February 4, 1924, in St. Marys, Kansas, the daughter 
of John and Emma Jacob Kramer.&nbsp; Genevieve attended Immaculate Conception
 grade and high schools. She graduated from Strickler Business College 
in Topeka and worked in Topeka before being the bookkeeper at Keating 
Motor and Electric of St Marys.

She was married to Leo P. Lenherr in 1971, who preceded her in death.
 She is survived by his children, Larry, Stephen and Joe, and Patricia 
Ann Hoobler, Kathryn Neill, Mary Thomas, and Edyne Motley, as well as 
grandchildren and nephew Jim Keating.

Genevieve has resided at McCrite Plaza of Topeka since 2007.

Wanda B. Welch, 91, passed away Saturday, February 25, 2023, at the Brookside Retirement Community in Overbrook.

She was born February 28, 1931 in Randolph, the daughter of Harold D.
 and Lois A. Kunze Laird.&nbsp; Wanda was raised in the Randolph community 
until moving to St. Marys where she graduated from St. Marys High 
School.

Mrs. Welch was a bookkeeper and office manager for Topeka Boiler and 
Supply Company.&nbsp; She was a member of the Highland Park United Methodist 
Church where she was a member of the Red Hat Society. Wanda enjoyed 
bowling, playing cards, genealogy and her family. She was a member of 
the Topeka Genealogy Society and the Kansas History Society.&nbsp; She was 
the head historian for the Kunze and Laird family reunions.

Wanda and Adelbert “Bert” Welch married in 1951, in St. Marys. “Bert” preceded her in death on April 18, 2020.

Wanda B. Welch

 Joyce Marie (Murphy) Tooley, 89, passed peacefully in her sleep Sunday February 26, 2023, in Wamego, Kansas.

She was born November 8, 1933, to JW and Alma Murphy in Great 
Bend, Kansas. She married George A. Tooley on April 8, 1961, at Saint 
Rose Catholic Church in Great Bend, Kansas. He survives.

Joyce attended Great Bend High School, graduating in 1951. After 
graduating high school, she started her career in insurance in Wichita, 
Kansas.&nbsp; She was General Manager of Liberal Mobile Homes for over 35 
years, retiring in 2000. Joyce and her husband moved from Liberal, 
Kansas to Dillion, Colorado and then to Greeley, Colorado where they 
built her dream home.&nbsp; In November, 2017, they moved to Wamego, Kansas.

A devout Catholic all of her life, Joyce was a member of St. 
Bernard’s Catholic Church in Wamego. She loved working in her yard and 
tending to her plants, listening to music, traveling the world with 
George and enjoyed being a volunteer at the Columbian Theatre in Wamego.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, George; sisters Janice 
Sis and husband Ray, Rita Buchanan and husband Joe; brother Joe Murphy 
and wife Roma Lee; sister in law Rose Murphy brother in law Dan Bernard;
 son Chris Tooley and wife Leah, Platteville, Colorado, daughters, 
Kayleen Hernandez and husband, Stan, Loveland, Colorado, and Kara Holle 
(Mike Burton), Wamego, Kansas; grandchildren: Brianna Tooley, Portland, 
Oregon, Brett Tooley and Naomi, Windsor, Colorado, Kylee Millman, Costa 
Mesa, California, Shayla Millman, Westminster, Colorado, Seth Holle, 
Wamego, Kansas, Ethan Holle, Wamego, Kansas; great-grandchildren; Ambrie
 and Myah Greeley, Colorado and several nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers; Michael and Richard Murphy, sister; Barbara&nbsp;Bernard.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday morning, March 
1, 2023, at 11:00 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Wamego with Fr. 
Michael Peterson officiating. Burial will be in St. Bernard’s Cemetery.

The family will meet with friends at a luncheon following the services at St. Bernard’s Parish Hall.

Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego.&nbsp;

A Rosary service will be Tuesday evening at 7:00 at the funeral home.

Donna Jean Clemons, 46, of Morganville, Kansas, died Sunday, February
 26, 2023, at the Park Villa Nursing Home in Clyde, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born
 on February 27, 1976, in Lebanon, Pennsylvania.

Donna worked at Ray’s Apple Market for many years and Kier’s 
Thriftway.&nbsp; She knew no stranger, was a great friend to many and always

Donna Jean Clemons

Roger Jay Mall, age 94, died February 27, 2023, at the Clay County 
Medical Center in Clay Center, KS. He was born to Eldon and Gaye 
(Snyder) Mall in Broughton, KS on January 29, 1929. Roger grew up on a 
farm outside of Broughton, KS. He was a graduate of Clay Center High 
School. 

Roger joined the Air Force shortly after high school and served 
in Korea. He attended the Art Institute after his time in the military.&nbsp;
 Roger married Judith L. Fellers; she preceded him in death. He retired 
from the Department of Defense as a map and chart maker. Roger enjoyed 
riding his bicycle and doing Genealogy. He was extremely talented at 
weaving and would weave Indian rugs. He donated several to Kansas State 
University. In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by parents;
 two brothers and 2 sisters.

Roger Mall

On Sunday, February 26, 2023, in Manhattan, Kansas, Susan Weaver, beloved wife and mother, passed into eternity.&nbsp;

Born
 in Manhattan, Kansas on January 31, 1951, to Jim and June Johns, she 
worked in her father’s creamery, John’s Creamery, from kindergarten 
until her graduation from Kansas State University in 1973 with a BS 
degree in education. After graduation, Susan taught two years of special
 education in Greenleaf, Kansas.&nbsp;

On January 8, 1977, 
she married Tracy Weaver and began a 46 year long honeymoon. She had 
“Ruth 1:16-17” inscribed on Tracy’s wedding band which includes these 
words from the Bible, “Wherever you go, I will go, wherever you live, I 
will live…” During their marriage, Susan and Tracy were blessed with 
five children and lived in Salina, Kansas, Louisville, Kentucky, 
Nashville, Tennessee, Dyersberg, Tennessee, Newbern, Tennessee, Atlanta,
 Georgia, Ottawa, Kansas, finally returning to Manhattan, Kansas in 
1998.&nbsp;

At every new location, the Weavers made lifelong
 friendships at church and in the community. Susan put her education 
degree to use by homeschooling all five of their children, and each one 
went on to graduate from the Kansas State University College of 
Engineering.

Known for her generous heart, in Susan’s 
craft room, you would find quilting, lacemaking, crochet, needlework and
 knitting projects, which were then given to family and friends or 
donated to charity. After her children graduated from high school, and 
her homeschooling job was completed, Susan did not retire, but continued
 to teach others, tutoring young women so they would pass the exam to 
receive their GED. Over the years, Susan and Tracy led many small groups
 at their church, encouraging individuals and couples to live lives of 
Christian faith and integrity. Above all else, Susan’s goal was to 
follow the example of Jesus by loving God and serving others. Those who 
know Susan would agree that she met that goal in her own quiet, gentle, 
yet powerful, way.

Susan will be missed by her many 
friends and family and is survived by her husband Tracy, children, Ben 
Weaver (Eaton, CO), Sam, Teresa and grandson Samuel Weaver (Westminster,
 MD), John Weaver (Olathe, KS), Jim Weaver (Olathe, KS), Abby Weaver 
(Grandview, MO), mother Betty June Johns (Manhattan, KS), sisters, Nancy
 Glover (Grand Junction, CO), and Peggy Johns and Marion Tilford 
(Manhattan, KS), brother Joe and Sharon Johns (Manhattan, KS), nieces

Susan Weaver

Dorothy Martha Balluch passed away on Sunday February 26, 2023, at home in Manhattan, Kansas.  She was 91 years old.

Dorothy was born on March 27, 1931, to John and Barbara (Graf) Spies in Quinter, Kansas.

Dorothy
 graduated from Quinter High School in 1949, and later graduated from 
the Salina Beauty Academy.  Owner/operator of Dorothy’s Beauty Shop in 
Quinter, she was an important part of the community for many years.  In 
1973, she moved to Lincoln, KS and a few years later to Ellsworth, KS to 
follow her job manufacturing telephone wires with Essex Group.  She 
lived over 40 years in Ellsworth, spending her final 3 months living 
with her son, Eddie, in Manhattan, KS.

On August 18, 1950, she was united in marriage to Eddie Balluch.

To
 this union they had 2 daughters and 4 sons.  Sue Ellen (Richard) 
Goates, Eugene, Eddie, Donald (Rose), Donna (Chuck) DuFault and Chris 
(Ila).

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband 
Eddie Balluch, her parents John and Barbara Spies, brother John Spies, 
daughter Sue Ellen and son Chris.

Dorothy is survived 
by her brother Harold, children, Gene, Eddie, Donald and Donna and 19 
grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.

Over the 
years Dorothy was an avid softball player, bowler, and busy mother 
following the many activities of her six children.  Later in life she 
stayed busy stitching away on numerous quilts.  She loved to mow.  Many a
 lawn mower were worn out maintaining her large yard at less than 3 
inches tall, throughout the growing season.

Memorial 
services will be held on Saturday March 11, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at the 
Ashland Community Church, 2901 W 32nd Ave., Manhattan, KS 66502.  A 
luncheon will follow the service.  Burial will be at a later date in the
 Baker Township Cemetery, Quinter, KS.

In lieu of 
flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Ashland Community

In 1969, Bill was married to his wife Regina. 
Together they had 2 sons, Brian and Brad. Bill and Regina were later 
divorced in 2009.

Bill worked in sales over the years. 
He was known as the “Frito-Lay Guy” and later as the “Pella Guy”. He 
enjoyed being a salesman, it came to him naturally, visiting with his 
clients and taking care of them.

He was a car 
enthusiast. Bill’s father was a car salesman, which helped Bill want to 
know about the cars and to know more about cars of all types. He 
collected many classic cars over the years. His joy was taking his 
classic cars to as many cars shows as he could. Bill won many awards for
 his cars, including Best of Show. Along with the car shows, he also 
loved having his car in the parades and just taking them for a nice 
summer cruise down the road.

After he retired, he was a
 volunteer at the Midwest Car Museum in Manhattan. He loved to be at the
 museum to be in his natural place of being around cars and talking to 
people about them.

Bill is survived by his sons: Brad 
Schroeder, of Rocky Mount, Missouri and Brian Schroeder of Overland 
Park, Kansas; also, he was a wonderful grandfather to his 5 
granddaughters and 2 great-granddaughters.

Harold Miller, 73, of rural Dickinson, Kansas, passed away at home on Thursday, February 23, 2023.&nbsp; Cremation will take place. A celebration of life will be held on Friday, March 3, 2023, 10:00 a.m. at Sutphen Mill Christian Church, Chapman, KS. A graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m. at Liberty cemetery in Upland. Memorial contributions may be made to Sutphen Mill Christian Church 3117 Paint Rd, Chapman, KS 67431.

He was born July 1, 1949, to Raymond and Regina Miller of rural Dickinson, Kansas. Harold farmed in the Upland Community all his life. He was a lifetime member of the Sutphen Mill Christian Church.

On January 20, 1974, Harold married Colleen Goad. They built their home in the Upland Community. They welcomed two sons.

Harold is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Colleen; his two sons, Mark (Pamela) Miller and Matthew (Sarah) Miller all of the Upland Community; Six grandchildren, Wyatt, Hanna, Newt, Tateum, Kaden and Hazel: two sisters, Sharon (Kenny) Chase of Talmage, KS, Brenda Miller of Abilene, KS and one brother, Neil Miller of California.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents.&nbsp;

Beverly J. Caron, age 71, of Concordia, KS, passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at Park Villa Nursing Home, Clyde, KS.&nbsp; She was born on September 19, 1951 in Clay Center, KS to Elmer &amp; Mary J. (Van Scoyoc) Odgers.

She graduated from Hanover High School in 1969 and then Cloud County Community College. 

She married Ron Caron on August 8, 1978 in Oklahoma. 

Bev was a registered nurse and worked at St. Joseph Hospital, St. Ann’s, Nazareth Motherhouse and was DON for Sunset Nursing Home until her retirement in 2016.

She was a member of the Concordia Wesleyan Church, PEO, SASNAK, Christian Women’s Club and the hospital auxiliary.&nbsp; 

Bev loved to play Bunco and loved gardening, flowers, birds, nature but especially fond of cats. Bev was an avid Royals fan.

She is survived by her husband Ron; her precious cat Maggie Mae; daughters Melody Caron, Portland, OR and Angela Barnes (Nathan), Clyde; brother James Odgers, Wamego; sister Janice Bender, Concordia; grandchildren Baron Barnes, Dustin Trzicky and Brayden Barnes; great-grandchildren Brooklyn Barnes and Canaan Barnes; sisters-in-law Mary Lou Allen, Goodland, ID, Margie Tremblay (Richard), Topeka, KS and Janet Weber (Ivan), Concordia; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

She was preceded by her parents; an infant sister, Mildred; brothers-in-law Jack Caron, Dean Caron and Larry Allen; sister-in-law, Avis Hulett and mother and father-in-law Clifford and Rose Caron.

&nbsp;Ginger Leigh Root, 42, passed away on February 10, 2023, at her home in Ocala. Ginger was born in Junction City, Kansas, on September 22, 1980. She grew up in Wakefield, Kansas, before moving to Arkansas in 1993. 

She attended high school in Bryant, Arkansas, before becoming an LPN and working as a Hospice nurse. She became a fitness expert and obtained professional status in the International Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation before moving from Little Rock, Arkansas, to Ocala to work as the Director of Personal Training at Zone Health and Fitness. She then undertook the challenging task of becoming a firefighter and first responder with the dream of continuing to help others, and she was committed to doing so in her new home of Ocala. Ginger is survived by her son, Merit Bynum, her mother and step-father, Karen and Mark Smeltzer, her father, Douglas Root, and her beloved brothers, Jake and Keith Root. 
 A Celebration of Life will be held at Roberts of Ocala Downtown Chapel 
in Ocala on March 2nd, 2023, at 4:00 EST. In lieu of flowers, the family
 requests that memorial donations be made on Ginger's behalf to the 
Ocala Fire Department, emergency medical services, and police 
department. Roberts of Ocala Funerals and Cremations will be handling 
the arrangements.

Phyllis I. Piepenburg, age 93, of Litchfield,
 MN, died on Sunday, February 26, 2023, at CentraCare Hospital in St. 
Cloud, MN. A public visitation will be held from 10:00 am -12:00 pm on 
Saturday, March 4th at Beckville Lutheran Church, to be 
followed by her funeral service at 12:00 pm. Interment will be in 
Beckville Lutheran Church Cemetery at a later date. Phyllis Idell Warren
 Piepenburg, sixth of 15 children of John “Martin” and Inez 
(Peterson) Warren, was born in Grove City on December 20, 1929. She was 
baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church, now Trinity Lutheran 
Church, of Grove City. She graduated from Grove City High School in 
1948. As a teenager, Phyllis was a telephone operator and a “hired girl”
 for Mrs. S. W. Holmquist, who was a homemaking mentor for her. On 
September 28, 1948, Phyllis married Hugo Paul Piepenburg at First 
Lutheran Church in Grove City, MN. They farmed in the Meeker County 
area, raising dairy cows, pigs, corn, and soybeans. They were blessed 
with eight children.

Phyllis was the heart of her family and home, creating wonderful 
meals, baking tasty pies and treats, keeping a spotless house, patching,
 and fixing whatever was worn or torn, canning, freezing, raising, and 
butchering her leghorn chickens, active in the mother’s group at country
 school and keeping the books for the farm, all while raising her 8 
kids. She instituted the “10:00 Treat”, which bought her a few minutes 
of quiet from her kids, while she listened to Norma Burke’s local radio 
show, catching up on local news and announcements for funerals and 
bridal showers, with a recipe thrown in regularly. On the coldest of 
winter days, Mom would take turns with other country school Moms and 
cook up a big hotdish for “dinner” (that’s what the noon meal was always
 called) and deliver it to the country school so the kids would have a 
warm meal that day. On hot summer days, Mom would pack us up and drive 
us to the Beckville Lutheran Church Picnic Grounds beach on Lake 
Minnebelle and act as our lifeguard, even though she couldn’t swim a 
stroke. Sometimes, as a treat, we had a big jug of cold A&amp;W root 
beer waiting for us when we got back from our swim. Beckville Lutheran 
Church was central to Phyllis’s life, she was active in women’s circles.
 She would fry up chicken in the days of the Fourth of July celebration 
at the Lake Minnebelle picnic grounds, brought treats for Bible School, 
baked up goodies for the Fancy Cookie Sale and changed altar paraments. 
She carried on the Warren traditions of her childhood, preparing fruit 
soup, oyster stew and lutefisk, with white sauce of course, and creating
 her own birthday tradition for her family – every birthday was 
celebrated with angel food cake, strawberries, and whipped cream.

Phyllis and Hugo spent 23 years camping and fishing at Lake Geneva 
and Lake Mary in the Alexandria, MN area, creating lifelong friendships 
with their fellow campers. Phyllis and Hugo were wonderful dancers and 
regularly danced in Cosmos, Paynesville, Cedar Mills and anywhere else 
there was good, old-time music. Their kids were all taught to be 
dancers, too, at family wedding dances or anniversaries or just dancing 
around the kitchen table on Sunday afternoon, with the radio tuned to 
New Ulm or Albany. Phyllis and Hugo enjoyed many Rustad bus trips, 
making lifelong friends along the way.

Phyllis became a widow in 2008 after 60 years of marriage to Hugo. 
Being fiercely independent, Phyllis remained out on the farm for 5 
years, then moved into Litchfield to her Cottonwood Avenue apartment 
where she lived independently until her death. A stroke in 2022 was a 
real challenge for her, but she worked hard in her rehabilitation and 
triumphantly returned to her Cottonwood Ave apartment after 3 months. 
She enjoyed her grandchildren, remembering them with birthday cards, 
camping with them at the annual Piepenburg Campout up until she was 91 
years old, and making sure the reservations for the shelter were made 
for the annual Piepenburg Picnic. Phyllis loved feeding her birds, doing
 jigsaw puzzles, watching “her music” (the public access channel old 
time music shows), her daytime “stories," Blue Bloods and Magnum PI
 TV programs, long phone conversations with friends and family, trying 
new recipes, eating fried sunnies and feeding her family and guests, 
many times, needing to be coaxed to sit down and join everyone at the 
table. She even had a fish fry just a couple weeks before she passed 
away. She loved being busy and getting out, especially with her Tuesday 
morning coffee ladies, her Cottonwood Avenue friends and neighbors, her 
class of ’48 classmates and going dancing with her group of women 
friends.

Phyllis was a feisty, energetic, generous, outspoken, hardworking, 
fun-loving woman who lit up a room. She will be deeply missed by her 
family and friends.

Phyllis is survived by her children, Julie (Robert) Plaetz of Lucan, 
MN, Jeffrey Piepenburg of Grove City, MN, Jay Piepenburg (Mary) of 
Cokato, MN, Joel (Julie) Piepenburg of Brooten, MN, Jayne Piepenburg of 
Litchfield, MN, Vicki (Mark) Fastner of Woodbury, MN, and Tracey (Mardi)
 Piepenburg of Alexandria, MN; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren;
 sisters Fern Peterson of Junction City, KS and Faye Kjolsing of 
Litchfield; brother David Warren of Colorado Springs, CO; 
sisters-in-laws Adeline Piepenburg of Litchfield, MN, Jody Warren, of 
Hingham, MT.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; 12 siblings, daughter Joyce Piepenburg; and great-granddaughter Adeline Raisanen.

celebrated with angel food cake, strawberries, and whipped cream.Phyllis and Hugo spent 23 years camping and fishing at Lake Geneva 
and Lake Mary in the Alexandria, MN area, creating lifelong friendships 
with their fellow campers. Phyllis and Hugo were wonderful dancers and 
regularly danced in Cosmos, Paynesville, Cedar Mills and anywhere else 
there was good, old-time music. Their kids were all taught to be 
dancers, too, at family wedding dances or anniversaries or just dancing 
around the kitchen table on Sunday afternoon, with the radio tuned to 
New Ulm or Albany. Phyllis and Hugo enjoyed many Rustad bus trips, 
making lifelong friends along the way.Phyllis became a widow in 2008 after 60 years of marriage to Hugo. 
Being fiercely independent, Phyllis remained out on the farm for 5 
years, then moved into Litchfield to her Cottonwood Avenue apartment 
where she lived independently until her death. A stroke in 2022 was a 
real challenge for her, but she worked hard in her rehabilitation and 
triumphantly returned to her Cottonwood Ave apartment after 3 months. 
She enjoyed her grandchildren, remembering them with birthday cards, 
camping with them at the annual Piepenburg Campout up until she was 91 
years old, and making sure the reservations for the shelter were made 
for the annual Piepenburg Picnic. Phyllis loved feeding her birds, doing
 jigsaw puzzles, watching “her music” (the public access channel old 
time music shows), her daytime “stories," Blue Bloods and Magnum PI
 TV programs, long phone conversations with friends and family, trying 
new recipes, eating fried sunnies and feeding her family and guests, 
many times, needing to be coaxed to sit down and join everyone at the 
table. She even had a fish fry just a couple weeks before she passed 
away. She loved being busy and getting out, especially with her Tuesday 
morning coffee ladies, her Cottonwood Avenue friends and neighbors, her 
class of ’48 classmates and going dancing with her group of women 
friends.Phyllis was a feisty, energetic, generous, outspoken, hardworking, 
fun-loving woman who lit up a room. She will be deeply missed by her 
family and friends.Phyllis is survived by her children, Julie (Robert) Plaetz of Lucan, 
MN, Jeffrey Piepenburg of Grove City, MN, Jay Piepenburg (Mary) of 
Cokato, MN, Joel (Julie) Piepenburg of Brooten, MN, Jayne Piepenburg of 
Litchfield, MN, Vicki (Mark) Fastner of Woodbury, MN, and Tracey (Mardi)
 Piepenburg of Alexandria, MN; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren;
 sisters Fern Peterson of Junction City, KS and Faye Kjolsing of 
Litchfield; brother David Warren of Colorado Springs, CO; 
sisters-in-laws Adeline Piepenburg of Litchfield, MN, Jody Warren, of 
Hingham, MT.Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; 12 siblings, daughter Joyce Piepenburg; and great-granddaughter Adeline Raisanen.
