Denise Torrey, 65, of St. George, Kaas passed away Friday, November 25, 2022 at the Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas.

Denise was born to Virlin Lee and Mary Pearl Fleming on August 5th, 1957, in Wamego, Kansas. Denise grew up on a farm and attended St. George High School where she met her beloved husband, Dudley Torrey. The pair shared their first date the night of her high school graduation in 1975. They were united in marriage on September 2, 1978, and had three children. The couple enjoyed attending their grandchildren's sporting events, spending time with family and friends, fishing, camping, boating, and going on drives together. Her children made her a grandma (mamaw, gram) to nine grandchildren. Motherhood was Denise’s greatest joy and being a grandma her greatest blessing. Denise delighted in spending time with her grandchildren. Together they went to the movies, on summer camping trips, 4-wheeling adventures, trips to Oceans and Worlds of Fun, birthday shopping, they put together puzzles, played card games, and more.

Denise was a pillar of strength and resilience, she cared for all of her children and husband through life threatening illnesses and her optimism and stability never wavered. Even when facing cancer, Denise continued to face each hurdle with grace, strength, and hope.

Denise was an eternal optimist and exuded positivity at all times. She sought adventure and found fun and laughter in any situation. Denise bungee jumped in her 30s, dirt-biked through her 40s, zip-lined in her 50s, and cliff jumped in her 60s. She loved camping, fishing, boating, celebrating St. Patty’s Day, and sledding on the perfect snow followed by a fresh cup of hot cocoa. Denise cared for her strawberry garden and flowers, fed birds, squirrels, outdoor fish, and toads. She always said, “the mess will be there tomorrow, there’s fun to be had today”.

Denise was a devoted employee of Walmart for close to 35 years before she retired in 2020. Denise met many coworkers who became good friends. Denise also enjoyed a circle of friends who enjoyed family camping trips throughout the years, lunches, card parties, and Christmas home tours. Denise was a member of the St. Joseph’s church for 20 years. She had a giving heart and sponsored many children through UNBOUND and donated to K-LOVE.

Denise is survived by her husband, Dudley Torrey, and three children Dudley Caleb Torrey (Natalie), Jess Torrey (Jennifer), and Megan Todd (Jared). Her nine grandchildren: Avery Torrey (Nicole), Clarissa Torrey, Vivian Torrey, Ruby Torrey, Tristyn Torrey, Aidan Torrey, Maddox Ibarra, Marcello Ibarra, and Isabel Todd. Her sister Vicki Westgate (Scott), brother Kevin Fleming, sister Colleen Lubbers (Jason). Sister-in-laws Carol Eichman (Ed), Ruth Cassity, and brother-in-law Steve Torrey (Terry) and Monty Peterson. She was preceded in death by her parents, Virlin Lee and Mary Pearl Fleming, mother-in-law Isabel Mondt, and her sister-in-law, Jane Peterson and brothers-in-law Terry Cassity and Delbert Eichman.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 2, 2022, at Campanella and Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego. Pastor Dave Romero will be officiating. Burial will follow at St. George Cemetery. Joseph “Francis” Minihan, 89, of Blaine, Kansas, died Thursday, November 24, 2022, at the Onaga Community Hospital.&nbsp; He was a life-long resident of the area.

Francis was born February 21, 1933, in Wamego, Kansas, the son of John Francis and Lillian (Smith) Minihan.&nbsp; He attended local grade school and graduated from Blaine High School in 1951.

Francis was a farmer and stockman, operating the family farm just east of Blaine.&nbsp; He also worked in Topeka for Henry Manufacturing Company and Goodyear Tire Company.&nbsp; He then worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation as an equipment operator.&nbsp; He was a member of St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.&nbsp; His hobby was also his work.&nbsp; He loved to farm.

Francis married Martha J. Priddy, on August 24, 1963, in Topeka, Kansas.&nbsp; She survives at their home.

He is also survived by his daughter; Karen Ebert (Kyle), St. Mary and his sons; Joseph Michael Minihan, Blaine, Kevin Patrick Minihan (Cathy), Blaine, Mark Allen Minihan (Carol), Wheaton, and Gerald Francis Minihan (Christi), Rossville; his 13 Grandchildren, T. J. Minihan, Brooke Minihan (Fiance', Matt Fronczak), Chase Minihan (Taylor), Kasey Minihan (Larissa), Cameron Minihan, Lane Minihan (Savannah), Wyatt Minihan, Wade Minihan, Molly Minihan, Garret Minihan (Coty Clifton), Breanna Ebert (Fiance', Nathan Wagoner), Eric Ebert and Jared Ebert; his great-granddaughter, Millie Jean; his brother: Kenneth Minihan (Mary), Valley Center and sisters, Phyllis Hasenkamp, Centrailia, Catherine Harkness (Steve), Wamego, and Joanne Minihan, Topeka.&nbsp; Francis was preceded in death by his parents; twin sister, Dorothy Leeker; and brothers, James Minihan and Maurice Minihan.

Visitation will take place Thursday, December 08, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.&nbsp; A graveside service with full military honors will take place on Friday, December 09, 2022, from 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery. Robert was born March 12, 1958, in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the son of Robert and Katherine (Nettinger) Robison. He served in both the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army. After serving four years in the Marine Corps, he left as a Corporal and enlisted in the Army in 1981. This is where, after 22 years, he would retire as a Master Sergeant in 2002. After his service, he was able to visit all 50 states and was working on the islands as he loved to cruise. Before being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2005, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and working on different types of vehicles. Some of his favorite times included Friday Family dinner, yearly family vacations, pumpkin carving, and spending time with his grandkids. He didn't allow Parkinson's to hold him down. He swam with the sting rays, went parasailing, cave tubing, salmon fishing in Alaska and was able to see Mt. Denali completely clear for three days in a row. On his bucket list, he wanted to see REBA in concert and two days before his passing, he was able to check that box. He loved it. He is survived by his life partner, Cindi Porter, and his close circle of family; Rachel Jones, Cory Robison (grandson), Tim and Maria Porter, Daymien and Faybien Michael (grandsons). Thank you for always being there and loving him unconditionally. Never did he need anything that his "team" wouldn't be able to provide for him. Other survivors include sons, Brett (Christina) Robison and Kyle (Sharon) Robison. John Franklin Kaiser, age 79, of Manhattan, died Saturday November 19, 2022 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.

John was born on May 13, 1943 in Junction City, the son of Lester C. and Jean Marie (Smith) Kaiser. He grew up in the Junction City area and graduated from Junction City High School with the class of 1961. After graduation John joined the U.S. Navy and went to Naval Photographical School in Pensacola, Florida.

He worked at Norfolk, Virginia, then was deployed to the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier, USS Observation Island at Cape Canaveral, Florida and was later transferred to Washington D.C. to the Naval Photographic Center. After his Honorable discharge from the Navy, John went to Fort Riley and worked for the Department of Defense as a photographer in the photo lab and then became the Film Service Officer in the TASC Office. After 30 years of service, he retired in 1993.

In retirement John worked for Briggs Auto, Jerrys Carpet World and the Westview Community Church. He enjoyed being part of the Gideons, the Yard Art Classic Car Club in Manhattan and a member of the Westview Community Church. He was able to help the church and many people while working at the church, which was important to him and brought him much joy.

On February 13, 1965 in Mims, Florida, John was united in marriage to Carlene Young. She survives at their home in Manhattan.

In addition to Carlene, John is survived by his sons: Raymond Kaiser (Tracie) of Olathe, Kansas and Scott Kaiser (Heather) of Liberty, Missouri; also, his grandsons: Brendan Kaiser and Kelley Kaiser; his sister Joan Johnston, of Augusta, Kansas; and his nephew Mark Johnston of Chapman, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Michael Johnston.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 5:30 until 7:00p.m. Monday November 28, 2022 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday November 29, 2022 at the Westview Community Church, 615 Gillespie in Manhattan, with Pastor Brian Smith officiating. Interment with military honors will be held at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at Fort Riley.

Kenneth John Umscheid, age 62, a lifetime Manhattan resident, died November 17, 2022, at his residence.

He was born January 23, 1960, in Manhattan, the son of Cletus and Donna (Foster) Umscheid.

Kenny worked with his family at Umscheid Auto for many years. He then had worked at Midwest Concrete Materials and Shilling Construction.

He was a member of the Eagles Lodge and spent many hours working on his classic cars.

Andrew William Powell, age 26, of Manhattan, died November 17, 2022, at Ascenion Via Christi Hospital from brian cancer.

He was born November 24, 1995, in Wichita, Kansas, the son of Carlton Vinsick and Jessica Joy Powell.

Andrew worked as a cook in several restaurants including Popeyes, Early Edition and Sonic.

He was a loving and caring person, was an amazing father and loved to spoil his son rotten. He was also a huge Spiderman fan.

Survivors include his wife Jozlynn Sue-Ray Cunningham; two children: Lorenzo Ray Powell and Teanna Marie Powell; his mother Jessica Joy Phillips and her husband Andrew; his father Carlton Vinsick and his wife Stacy; and five siblings: Dekoda Gray, Kayla Kraft, Emma Vinsick, MaKayla Vinsick and Elexa Vinsick.

A Celebration of Andrews’ life will be held at a later date.

Linda Lorraine Felber, 72, of Manhattan, died Friday, Nov. 18, at her home.

Born Feb. 11, 1950, to John and Vera Schirmer in Danbury, Ct., Linda moved to Manhattan in 1973 following her marriage on Sept. 29, 1973, to Bill Felber. She was a Manhattan resident for the remaining 49 years of her life.

Linda was a 1981 graduate of Kansas State University with a degree in humanities who enjoyed working as a babysitter for numerous local families.

Linda and Bill had one son, Frank Timothy, who was born on May 9, 1998.

For most of her adult life, Linda fought a brave personal battle with paranoid schizophrenia, a pernicious, debilitating disease of the brain that made it difficult for her to function in a group work setting. Despite that, those who knew Linda unanimously remember her desire to be helpful and friendly in all circumstances.

She was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church who enjoyed taking part in various church functions. She was also a proud member of the Kappa Omicron Nu national honor society.

Among her proudest moments were celebrating her son’s accomplishments, including achieving the Eagle Scout rank, being elected to the National Honor Society, earning his undergraduate degree in political science from Kansas State University, and earning his master’s degree from the University of Arizona in international security studies.

She and Bill celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary this past September.

Survivors include her husband and her son, both of the home. Other survivors include two sisters, Jacqueline Oleson of Greenwich, Ct., and Debra Oleson of White Plains, N.Y., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 28, at St. Thomas More Church with Rev. Frank Coady as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery.

Carolea Archer, 92, Kansas City, Missouri, passed away Saturday, 
November 19, 2022. She was born April 5, 1930, in Arkansas City, Kansas,&nbsp; to William and Cleota (Kirby) Moore and was the third of five children.

Carolea and Jerry Jones were married May 15, 1951, and owned several 
successful businesses together, including Jerry’s Auto Supply in 
Stanberry, Western Auto and The Bargain Barns in Maryville/ Red Oak/ 
Fall City/ Nebraska City.

Carolea was a Registered Nurse and nurse educator, earning her RN 
from Missouri Methodist Hospital, and later in life her bachelors and 
Masters Degrees from Northwest Missouri State University. &nbsp;She utilized 
her Masters in Psychological Counseling as a disaster mental health 
volunteer and was recognized as a leading Red Cross volunteer in 
Missouri in 1991. After Jerry’s death in 1999, she retired, and was 
married to David Archer from 2002 until 2007.

Preceded in death by her husband, parents and siblings Daryl Barrett,
 Ardath Menas, and Shane Moore. Carolea is survived by her children: Ken
 Jones (Ginny), Ozark, Mic Jones (Vicki), Firestone, Colorado, Julie 
Castillo (Ron Hetherington), Kansas City, a sister, Kathy Harris of 
Junction City, KS, as well as her many grandchildren and

Tim enlisted in the military at the age of 20 and faithfully served his country for 24 years, 1 month and 7 days. After retiring, Tim continued his civil service career with 1st Infantry Division Headquarters at Fort Riley for 18 years. Tim was an avid fisherman Spending many hours on his boat and trolling the lake for the next big catch. He took solace in sitting in the garage and listening to his radio when he wasn’t fixated on perfecting his yard. During high school, he participated in soccer for four years. After high school, he worked as a civilian contractor on Fort Riley and Kuwait and Afghanistan. After his return to the states, he obtain certification with HVAC. He went to work for Thermal Comfort Air in Manhattan, Kansas. He enjoyed fishing, taking road trips and spending time with friends and family. She was born on October 11, 1951 in Clay Center, the daughter of Walter William and Esther Faye (Dreier) Bulk.

On April 2, 1972 she married Vaughn Dentan Hoffman.&nbsp; They later separated.

Lynette worked in the Research and Extension Business Office at Kansas State University.&nbsp; Her world revolved around her daughter and grandkids.&nbsp; She enjoyed square dancing, puzzle books, lighthouses and learning more about her genealogy.

She is survived by her daughter, Ivy Kennedy and husband Brock of Manhattan and two grandchildren, Kacie Lyn and Ian Douglas. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, W. Keith Bulk. &nbsp;

Alice Marie Sutton, 86, of Wamego, Kansas, died Friday, October 21, 2022, at Wellsprings of Westmoreland. She was a long-time resident of the community.

Alice was born on April 13, 1936, in Smith Center, Kansas, the daughter of Harry Cecil and Sadie (Carter) Rhoades. She attended grade school and graduated from Smith Center High School.

Alice worked for twenty-three years in housekeeping at Wamego City Hospital. She enjoyed doing various crafts and reading. Alice was a quiet person and enjoyed being a homebody.

Alice is survived by her children; David Sutton (Vicki), Milford, Indiana, Kathy Feldhausen (Dale), Manhattan, and Dawna Sutton, Wamego; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; her sisters, Joann Hunnacutt (Jack), Smith Center, and Florence Kistler (Donald)), Albany, Oregon. Alice Marie Sutton, 86, of Wamego, Kansas, died Friday, October 21, 2022, at Wellsprings of Westmoreland. She was a long-time resident of the community.Alice was born on April 13, 1936, in Smith Center, Kansas, the daughter of Harry Cecil and Sadie (Carter) Rhoades. She attended grade school and graduated from Smith Center High School.Alice worked for twenty-three years in housekeeping at Wamego City Hospital. She enjoyed doing various crafts and reading. Alice was a quiet person and enjoyed being a homebody.Alice is survived by her children; David Sutton (Vicki), Milford, Indiana, Kathy Feldhausen (Dale), Manhattan, and Dawna Sutton, Wamego; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; her sisters, Joann Hunnacutt (Jack), Smith Center, and Florence Kistler (Donald)), Albany, Oregon. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Carl Rhoades and Donald Rhoades.No funeral service is planned.

Betty Lorraine Carver was born May 22, 1923, in Minneapolis, KS.&nbsp; She was the youngest daughter of Ethel Mae (Bishop) Carver and Levi Bert Carver.&nbsp; Betty passed away November 13, 2022 in her home at the age of 99 years, 6 months.

Betty Carver of Clyde, KS was married to Warren Coupal of Miltonvale on May 16, 1945, at the Clay Center United Methodist Church.

She graduated from Clyde High School in 1943, received her Normal Training, and then received her teaching certificate.&nbsp; She taught the next 2 years before getting married.

To this union was born 3 children, Shirley Coupal, Roeland Park, KS; Virginia Coupal-Smith, Roeland Park, KS; and Douglas and wife Michelle (Carlson) Coupal, Clay Center, KS. &nbsp;She was a great mom and participated in all of her children’s activities. They built their home on the family farm, a Century farm in Western Clay County. Betty was a homemaker and loved to be involved with the farming operation.

She was a member of the Clyde United Methodist Church and their UMW organization, Homemakers Extension Unit, Clay County 4-H, and served on the Browndale School Board.&nbsp; Betty was also a member of the Nathan Edson Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, Clay Center, KS. She served as Chapter Regent and State Chairman of Conservation for the Kansas Society, as well as a member of the Daughters of the American Colonists. She was also eligible to belong to the Mayflower Society.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband Warren, parents Ethel &amp; Levi Carver, three brothers and one sister.

Survivors include her three children as well as four grandchildren: Jessica (Smith) and husband Jeff Young,&nbsp; Lenexa, KS;&nbsp; Brenton Smith, Roeland Park, KS;&nbsp; Kyler Coupal and wife Shelby (Hynek) of Miltonvale, KS; and Kinsey (Coupal) and husband Trevor Cox, Clay Center, KS. Great Grandchildren include, Isabella Young, Graham Young, Coleson Cox and Emma Cox.

Her life was filled with many interesting experiences. She was born prematurely at 3 lbs, survived several accidents, and worked hard as a farmer’s wife. They raised turkeys for a few years, but the main focus at the farm was cattle. She canned her own fruits and vegetables, and made the best apple pie. Betty enjoyed the friends and family that would drop in to see her.&nbsp; She loved having her grandchildren around, who got away with more than her own kids did. She taught them to play Checkers and Rummy, along with having the best Pepsi parties, cookies, and ice cream. Betty may have been best known for her jokes and no one was ever a stranger to her as she had the gift to start up a conversation with anyone.

She will always be loved and missed by many!

Martha Webster, 86 died November 9, 2022, in Clay Center, KS.&nbsp; She was born on October 5, 1936, in Independence, MO the daughter of Durl and Gertrude (Sirotsky) O'Neil.&nbsp; Martha was raised in Independence, MO. She married Gene Webster on August 3, 1957, and they made their home in Overland Park, KS.&nbsp; Martha graduated from Central Missouri State College and later earned her master’s degree from the University of Kansas.&nbsp; She worked as a speech therapist for the Olathe school district until her retirement.&nbsp; In 2014, Gene and Martha moved to Clay Center, where they attended the Clay Center Covenant Church.&nbsp; Martha enjoyed the Kansas City Ballet, sewing, quilting, art appreciation, reading books to children and socializing with family and friends.&nbsp; Gene preceded her in death on May 11, 2015.&nbsp; Martha was a member of Prairie Baptist Church in Prairie Village, the University Women’s Organization, and the Quilting Guild.&nbsp; She was also preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Don O'Neil, Wade O'Neil and their spouses

Anna Margaret Reed Burns went to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 13, 2022. She was 84 years old. She is survived by her friend, partner and caregive Wayne Thompson and family. Anna was born August 18, 1938 in Alliance, Nebraska to Marjorie (Self) and Everett Mann. She was raised in Guide Rock, Nebraska. She was married to Don Reed in 1963 raising 6 children: Melody (Lloyd); Daniel; David (Tami); Judy (Joe); Alta (Jay) and Hope (Ralph). Don and Anna M. Reed were farmers and ranchers in Jewell County before moving to Dickinson County. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Enterprise, Kansas since 1975. Her husband of 46 years died in November of 2010. Anna married Don Burns in 2011. They were very happy for 3 years. He passed away in 2013.

 She is survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Kasey, Jody (Kraig), Don (Stephanie), Krystal, Isaac, Kellen (Merinda), Landon, Ashland (Kyle) and Nate. Great-grandchildren: Jalen, Mia, Dax and many more nieces, nephews and step children and great step-children.

Sherry L. Leister

Alan “Skip” Beaty Jones passed away on November 13, 2022. He was 82 years old. He was named after his mother, Ala Beaty, but as a baby his father began calling him Skipper and the name Skip remained through the years. The family often says, “If someone called the house and asked for Alan, we can assume they do not know him and are trying to sell something.”

Skip was born on September 25, 1940, in Mount Vernon, IL. He graduated from Sinton High School in Sinton, TX in 1958, received his BS (studying physics) and MS (studying cellular toxicology) from University of Texas, Austin in 1963 and 1968 and his PhD (studying radiation microbiology and radiation sensitizing agents) from the University of Manchester in 1971. He married his wife of 51 years, Joan Groce Jones, on June 26, 1971, and they raised two daughters, Kimberly and Camilla.

Skip served in the US Army, entering the Reserves in 1963 and continued to work on his masters during this time. In February of 1969, he was stationed at the 97th General Field Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany where he worked in the pharmacy. It was here that he met Joan. He was discharged in July 1970 and returned to Manchester to complete his PhD.

Skip’s education led to a variety of jobs. Coming first to the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) in October of 1971. Skip planned to be there as a Post-Doc Fellow for just a few years; however, by January of 1972, Skip accepted a faculty position in the School of Pharmacy at Ole Miss. He remained in academia at Ole Miss serving as faculty, graduate program director, and department head during his time. His work at Ole Miss opened a variety of research opportunities including Navy Forensic Drug Testing, National Institute of Drugs and Abuse Drug Testing, Forensic Drug Testing Laboratory inspections, Department of Transportation Forensic Drug Testing Program, Medical Review Officer Program, Substance Abuse Management, and many others. The drug testing industry pulled Skip into work after retirement from Ole Miss in 1999. He transitioned from academics to working full-time with the Substance Abuse Management Inc and Managed Athletic Testing Services in Milwaukee, WI and Boca Raton, FL. He retired (again) in 2006 when he and Joan moved to The Villages, FL.

From a young age, Skip enjoyed fishing, cars, and the outdoors. He was an Eagle Scout and remained active in Boy Scouts helping at Philmont Scout Ranch, even though he did not have any boys of his own. He also remained devoted to his collegiate fraternity, Sigma Chi, serving as the chapter advisor for the University of Mississippi chapter for many years. During retirement, his enjoyment of bird watching, container gardening, putting together puzzles, and reading only expanded. He kept detailed notes of the books he read, with many of his favorites being by John Grisham, John Hart, Tony Hillerman, Stuart Wood, James Patterson, and Ken Follett.

He was a man of faith and appreciated his interaction with his church and being a part of the Knights of Columbus Council #8488 and the Fourth Degree Msgr Arthur J. Luckey Assembly.

Skip will not only be remembered for his impeccable intellect and his ability to explain any form of scientific or mathematical equation, birds, or vehicles, but he will be remembered as a patient, devoted, and loving husband and father.

Skip is preceded in death by his father (William Paul Jones), mother (Ala Beaty Jones), brother (William), and two children and two grandchildren who all died before birth. He is survived by wife Joan, daughters Kimberly Ivester (Kelly) and Camilla Roberts (Kevin) both of Manhattan, and four grandchildren (Jackson and Will Ivester and Morgan and Taylor Roberts).

The Rosary will be said at 6:30 pm followed by a visitation from 7:00 to 8:00 pm on Sunday, November 20, at Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, Manhattan, KS.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church on Monday, November 21, at 10:00 a.m. followed by interment at Kansas Veterans Cemetery at Fort Riley.

Alan “Skip” Beaty Jones 

Richard Phillips, age 99, of Manhattan, Kansas, died November 8, 2022 in Westmoreland, Kansas.

Richard Phillips was born September 13, 1923 in the farm home of his parents near new Sharon, Iowa to Mildred (Hawk) and Claude Phillips, their first born. His mother died from cardiac arrest when Richard was 3 years old. His natural siblings were a still born baby sister and brother Charles, killed in a hunting accident when 17 years 9 months of age. The family was joined by their stepmother, Lorena (Ravlin) Kannewurf and her daughter Marylee in 1927.

The merged family remained active in agriculture, moving to a larger rental farm in Tama County, Iowa in 1929 where Richard attended Star rural School ½ mile away. Then in 1935 the family moved back to Mahaska County to Dr. Wilcox’s large livestock farm west of Beacon. It was 2 ½ miles from rural school, but had a tenant house for hired man’s family and other advantages for farming. After finishing his 8th grade exams, Richard entered Oskaloosa High School by bicycling to Beacon and catching a public bus with a school friend. There he majored in vocational Agriculture and was active in FFA as well as 4-H activities.

The family’s next move was to a purchased 100-acre farm near Barnes city in northern Mahaska County in 1939. Dick’s dad had become active in improved chicken and egg production, and this farm was well suited for that as well as for purebred livestock operations. The kids rode the school bus three miles to Barnes City High School, thriving o the rural small-town atmosphere there. Richard expanded his 4-H Club activities, exhibiting at Mahaska County and Iowa State Fairs. Upon high school graduation he remained home for a year, assisting with farming activities and earning money from his 4-H projects for Iowa State College.

Richard’s freshman year in Ag. Education at Iowa State went well, sharing a faculty member’s basement apartment with an Engineering senior. Both doing garden and house work in lieu of rental payment. Waiting tables at girls’ dorms for meals ad setting up bleachers, etc. at the Athletic Department for extra cash stretched his budget. With the War on, ROTC activity was featured and recruiting by all branches of U.S. Military service was supported by the College. After his first quarter in school, Richard joined the Farmhouse Fraternity, but continued to live in his apartment. Later he was accepted in the U.S. Navy V-12 program of college prep for officer candidacy and reported for active duty at Purdue University July 1, 1943.

The Purdue program was tailored to College of Agriculture students, mostly from land grant colleges across the country. In Navy uniforms of Apprentice Seaman doing a bit of marching and taking courses in Navy Organization and Naval Regulation, the new sailors continue their Ag Curriculum courses with top faculty for full credit at Navy expense. They also were given options to enroll in other programs, and after on academic year, Richard opted to the Navy’s V-5 aviation training program. This brought back to Iowa, first to Ottumwa primary training base as Tarmac Seaman 2nd Class, second to Cornell College at Mt. Vernon as Aviation Cadet for Flight Preparatory Training and then to Iowa City for Pre Flight training.

It was at the Ottumwa base that Richard met his wife to be. Valeta D. Conner, a student nurse of Ottumwa’s St. Joseph Hospital. They met at a USO sponsored dance in Hanger No. 1 on the base. Neither had much time off nor spare funds, but they managed enough dates to become better acquainted and closer friends. After Richard became Naval Aviation Cadet and Valeta Army Cadet Nurse, they continued to see one another. Richard could hitch hike in uniform from his Iowa bases to Ottumwa and be back before curfew.

The visits were curtailed when Richard was transferred to Primary Pilot Training at Norman, at the Aerial Navigator Training at Clinton, Oklahoma. But over the holiday mailing season, Richard had leave and hitchhiked to Chicago to work at a parcel sorting facility earning money for wedding and engagement rings, sleeping at the YMCA and eating YMCA bag lunches. It worked, and he met Valeta in Dubuque where she had a student nurse assignment to present the newly acquired engagement ring-happy times indeed.

After he received his Navigator wings and Ensign commission, Richard was eligible to marry but as Army Cadet Nurse, Valeta was not. So, she resigned from the Army and become a civilian licensed registered nurse. They were married August 28, 1945 before he was shipped to his VR11 duty post in Honolulu, Hawaii. Learning that Richard would have periodic flights back to Oakland, Valeta came out for private duty nursing, choosing 24-hour care of mothers with a new baby. While in transit to Oakland, Richard often could also stay in the home of Valeta’s client. Not a bad arrangement for the young couple.

Even better would be residency in Honolulu, but housing there at the time was so scarce that I didn’t seem possible. A lottery came to the rescue. The Navy Nurses quarters were vacated after Japan’s surrender, freeing 22 duplex housing units. Lots of Navy servicemen of various rands and rates and applied, so it was decided to run a lottery of the whole list; Richards’s name was drawn 13th-his birthday number. Valeta was free to come by the ship to join her husband. Next door neighbors there were the Squadron Navigation Officer, a full Commander, and a Chief Petty officer, both with useful connections for Richard and Valeta.

Lots of great experiences in Honolulu. Valeta’s childhood friends, Noel and Verla Kirby were there, as well as Richards’s aunt and family. Richard was able to get a small used care for touring Oahu and for attending a few classes at the University of Hawaii. For the return to mainland and home, Richard couldn’t get air passage for Valeta, so they returned by ship, he as ship officer, and she in the large dormitory area on the same ship, in San Francisco Richard mustered out from active duty in record time and they were on the Amtrack Train back to Iowa.

Richard’s service time earned ample credits for college training under the GI bill, but family student housing at universities was very tight, he was employed as County Extension Club Agent in his home county for a year, helping on down payment for an apartment house in Ames in 1947 to continue college at Iowa State. The couple’s first child, Judy was born in Oskaloosa; the other four and a stillborn daughter were born in Ames. In college Richard was able to supplement his subsistence under the GI bill by teaching Vocational Agriculture to veterans at Mingo High School, and then, after receiving his B.S. Degree, as Graduate Assistant in Ag. Economics at Iowa State. After his M.S., he made Assistant Professor in 1950 and earned his PhD in 1952. The first edition of his college textbook appeared in 1957. His first international assignment was to Nigeria in 1960. His promotion to full professor came in 1961.

The next year, 1962 the family moved to Manhattan, Kansas where Richard was employed by Agri-Research, a private consulting company. Following eight years at Agri and one with Logistics Research in Kansas City, Richard joined the Graduate Faculty at Kansas State and moved the family back to Manhattan. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 1995 after 25 years of active service at Kansas State. Throughout his career at KSU he worked in over 50 countries.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his infant daughter Deborah Sue, and his brother and step sister; also, his grandparents, Amos W. and Dora (Hickox) Phillis and Charles Eli and Anna Cornelia (Klump) Hawk.

He is survived by his wife Valeta of 80 years, four daughters: Judith Ann Jungen of Wauwatosa, WI, Patricia Jean Cink of Bandon, OR, Rebecca K. Phillips, DC, of Albuquerque, NM, and Kathryn Sue Phillips-Israel, PhD, of Portland OR, one son, Ralph L. Phillips of Dewey, AZ, twelve grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral Services for Mr. Phillips will be held on Saturday November 26, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel in Manhattan, Kansas. The family will greet friends at 10:30 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

A Graveside Service for Mr. Phillips with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday November 28, 2022 at the Union Mills Cemetery in Union Mills, Iowa. The Richard and Valeta D. (Conner) gravestone is in place in the family block at the endowed Union Mills Cemetery, Union Mills, Iowa. This cemetery is the final resting place for Richard’s parents and brother, as well as many of his ancestors.

The family suggests memorial contributions in memory of Richard be made to the Riley County Genealogy Society, the Riley County Historical Society, or the T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter. Richard Phillips, age 99, of Manhattan, Kansas, died November 8, 2022 in Westmoreland, Kansas. Richard Phillips was born September 13, 1923 in the farm home of his parents near new Sharon, Iowa to Mildred (Hawk) and Claude Phillips, their first born. His mother died from cardiac arrest when Richard was 3 years old. His natural siblings were a still born baby sister and brother Charles, killed in a hunting accident when 17 years 9 months of age. The family was joined by their stepmother, Lorena (Ravlin) Kannewurf and her daughter Marylee in 1927.The merged family remained active in agriculture, moving to a larger rental farm in Tama County, Iowa in 1929 where Richard attended Star rural School ½ mile away. Then in 1935 the family moved back to Mahaska County to Dr. Wilcox’s large livestock farm west of Beacon. It was 2 ½ miles from rural school, but had a tenant house for hired man’s family and other advantages for farming. After finishing his 8th grade exams, Richard entered Oskaloosa High School by bicycling to Beacon and catching a public bus with a school friend. Richard Phillips

On November 8th, 2022, Pam Hedman, a beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend to so many passed away after a short illness with family and close friends by her side peacefully. She was 60 years old. Born to Frank &amp; Doris (Jensen) Reves. Pam married Jim Hedman and they were together 37 years.

Pam was a hard worker, rarely missing time from work at Kansas State University Housing and Dining services. She had several positions with the university after being there 33 years. Most recently she was Maintenance Supervisor Sr. for the painting crew.

Pam and Jim were very social and Jim being an original member of the local band Crosswinds for 40 years gave them the opportunity to meet and become friends with so many people. Going to “gigs” was always something to look forward to as they would be able to see friends and make memories with so many they knew. She loved music and going to concerts was always a favorite.

Their daughter Alyssa had two children, Allison, and Anthony. They were the light of Pam’s eye. They called her Gigi, and she loved taking them places and spending time at home with them. Their energy and excitement were such a joy for her.

Pam is survived by her husband Jim of the home, daughter Alyssa, grandchildren Allison and Anthony, brother Russell, sisters Cindy and Lisa, sister-in-law Marylin (Don) Noyes, brother in laws Richard (Mandy) Hedman, and Larry Hedman, as well as many close and special friends.

Her father Franklin Reves, mother Doris Reves, sister Camela Piper preceded her in death.

Arlene Cole was born on Janurary 29th, 1926 in Elsworth, Kansas to Willie Lillian Kazee-Lawler and Arthur Robert Lawler.

She was the eldest sibling to Mary Lou-Thomas, Robert Lawler, and Larry Lawler.

In her youth, she moved to Manhattan Kansas to begin her life where she met and married Walter Lee Cole on August 17th,1954. The fruit of their union contributed to Sharon Blanton, Walter “Craig” Cole and Wonder L. Cole.

Arlene was a woman of many accomplishments. She joined Bethel A.M.E. Church in 1952, was a Founding Member of the 20th Century Literary &amp; Arts Club est.1944. A Founding Member of Sunflower Chapter 58, Daughter of ISIS Imperial Court 192, and The Golden Circle.

She was most known for being a friend and second Mom to many who she came in contact with.

She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husband Walter Lee Cole, and daughter Sharon Blanton.

Her legacy is to be remembered by Craig and Wonder, Jazz, her grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and her many spiritually adopted children and close friends.

You musn’t tie yourself to me with tears.

Be happy that we had so many beautiful years.

I gave to you my love. You can only guess how much you gave to me in happiness.
