KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — AJ Dybantsa had 40 points, nine rebounds and six assists, and No. 10 seed BYU use a big second-half run to break open a close game with No. 15 seed Kansas State and roll to a 105-91 victory in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament on Tuesday night.

Robert Wright III added 14 points and six assists, and Kennard Davis Jr. had 15 points for the Cougars (22-10), who set a single-game tournament scoring record while advancing to play seventh-seeded West Virginia on Wednesday night.

P.J. Haggerty matched Dybantsa into the second half and finished with 27 points for the Wildcats (12-20), who played their final game for interim coach Matthew Driscoll, who had taken control of the program after the firing of Jerome Tang last month.

Nate Johnson had 19 points for Kansas State. Khamari McGriff finished with 13.

The fact that BYU was playing at all Tuesday night was somewhat surprising.

Dybantsa could be the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft this year. Wright has been a star in his own right. At one point early in the season, the Cougars were ranked seventh in the AP Top 25 and living up to the lofty expectations of their expensive lineup.

But things went sideways beginning with a four-game skid in January and February, and floor leader Richie Saunders was lost for the rest of the season to a torn ACL. The Cougars lost three of their last four games, and tiebreakers put them at the No. 10 seed.

They jumped out to a quick lead Tuesday night, though, as Haggerty and Dybantsa began to duel. And while they led just 50-49 at the break, the Cougars went on a 17-2 run beginning with about 9 1/2 minutes to play that allowed them to pull away.

The Cougars march on to face West Virginia, which beat them 79-71 a couple of weeks ago.

Kansas State turns its focus toward hiring its next permanent coach.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Junior guard P.J. Haggerty was named to the All-Big 12 Honorable Mention Team, as the conference announced its annual men’s basketball awards on Monday (March 9).

It marked the third time in Haggerty’s career that he earned all-conference honors after being an All-AAC Third Team selection at Tulsa in 2023-24 and a unanimous All-AAC First Team pick at Memphis in 2024-25. He was also the AAC’s Player of the Year in 2024-25 and the league's Freshman of the Year in 2023-24.

Big 12 regular season champion Arizona headlined the individual awards, as senior Jaden Bradley was the league Player of the Year and senior Tobe Awaka was the Sixth Man of the Year, while head coach Tommy Lloyd was named the Coach of the Year for the first time. Kansas had both the Defensive Player of the Year (Flory Bidunga) and Newcomer of the Year (Melvin Council Jr.), while BYU’s AJ Dybantsa was the Freshman of the Year and Texas Tech’s Christian Anderson was Most Improved. Iowa State’s Tamin Lipsey was the Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The All-Big 12 awards are selected by league’s 16 coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players.

The nation’s No. 4 scorers at 23.3 points per game, Haggerty has scored in double figures in all 30 games he has played this season, which includes 22 games of 20 or more points and five games of 30 or more points. He is the first Wildcat since Jacob Pullen in 2009-10 to score in double figures in 30 consecutive&nbsp; games, while his 698 points are the fifth-most in a single season.

Haggerty’s 22 games of 20 or more points tied the legendary Bob Boozer (1958-59) for the second-most in school history, while his five 30-point games are the fifth-most in school history and the most since Michael Beasley set the school record with 13 in 2007-08.

Haggerty reached a career milestone at Houston on Feb. 14 when he became the fifth current Division I player to eclipse 2,000 career points.

For the season, Haggerty is averaging 23.3 points per game on 49.3 percent (263-of-534) shooting, including 34.5 percent (38-of-110) from 3-point range, with 5.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.1 steals in 35.1 minutes per game.

Haggerty and the Wildcats are the No. 15 seed at this week’s Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament and will face 10-seed BYU (21-10, 9-9 Big 12) at 6 p.m., CT on Tuesday at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City. The winner will get No. 7 seed West Virginia (18-13, 9-9 Big 12) at 6 p.m., CT on Wednesday.

The Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association (KWCA) and the Shrine Bowl of Kansas have announced the high school senior wrestlers who have accepted their invitation to wrestle in the 3rd annual KWCA Kansas Shrine Duals. &nbsp;The KWCA Kansas Shrine Duals will be held on Saturday, March 28th, 2026, at Fugate Gymnasium on the campus of Newman University in Wichita, Kansas. Wrestler selections are finalized by the KWCA after a review of applications submitted by wrestlers and are contingent upon that wrestler’s acceptance of the invitation. The East/West dividing line used to assign wrestlers to the East or West team is marked by the territories of the five Kansas Shrine Centers, however, some exceptions are made to ensure fulfillment of all weight classes. The rosters are subject to change and the final official match pairings will be determined and released the week of the event.

The Junction City Blue Jays Boys Basketball team fell to the Derby Panthers on Saturday night at Derby High School. The Blue Jays end their season in the 6A Sub-State Championship and finish with a record of 13-11 overall.

The two teams each traded early buckets to start a back and forth affair, with Junction City leading 4-2 in the opening minutes, but Derby would jolt ahead thanks to a trio of first quarter three pointers. Trailing 16-13 after the first quarter, and by as many as nine points early in the second period, the Blue Jays would answer back.&nbsp;

Jet Thompson knocked down three of his own shots from the outside in the second quarter to pull Junction City right back in the game. Thompson and Brody Boeckman would each lead Junction City’s offense in the first half with 11 points each, keeping the Blue Jays within three points, at 36-33 at halftime.&nbsp;

In the second half, Junction City’s Lovell Autry shook off his slow start by tallying the first four points of the third quarter and put the Blue Jays in the lead for the first time since the opening minutes. From there, the two teams would jostle for positioning once again, trading baskets but remaining within a possession of one another for the remainder of the quarter. Derby would keep its three point advantage at the end of the third, leading 49-46.&nbsp;

Autry, who scored just three first half points, would heat up when Junction City needed him most. The Senior scored a team-high 22 points in the contest. Scoring 19 of the Blue Jays 28 total after halftime.&nbsp;

Derby would use a quick run to extend its lead back out to nine points early in the fourth quarter, aided by the hot shooting of guard Greg Stiger, who would score 23 points in the game, but 18 of them in the second half, including nine points during the Panthers run that would eventually secure the win.&nbsp;

Additionally for Derby, Avant Riley would lead them in scoring overall with 25 points, while Cale Clingan added 14 points as well.&nbsp;

The Panthers would pull away for a double digit win despite the staunch effort of Junction City behind Autry, as well as Thompson’s 16 points.&nbsp;

With the win, Derby now advances to the 6A State Tournament.

Blue Jay Boys fall short in Sub-State Championship At Derby

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Freshman star Darryn Peterson scored 27 points in his likely Allen Fieldhouse finale, Tre White and Melvin Council Jr. had memorable senior send-offs of their own, and No. 14 Kansas routed Kansas State 104-85 on Saturday.

Peterson, the potential No. 1 pick in this year's NBA draft, was an efficient 10 of 15 from the field for the Jayhawks (22-9, 12-6 Big 12), who clinched a double-bye in next week's conference tournament by winning on Senior Day for the 43rd consecutive year.

White, a transfer from Illinois, had 23 points and 11 rebounds to cap his lone regular season in Lawrence, while Council — who arrived from St. Bonaventure — nearly had a triple-double with 17 points, eight rebounds and 10 assists in his final game at the Phog.

The win was a much-needed confidence boost heading into the postseason for the Jayhawks, who had dropped four of their previous six games, and it extended their home win streak over their in-state rivals to 20 in a row.

P.J. Haggerty, who missed last week's win over West Virginia with an undisclosed injury, scored 21 points to lead the Wildcats (12-19, 3-15). Nate Johnson also had 21 points, while Khamari McGriff finished with 15.

The game was close only until midway through the first half, when Kansas ran off nine straight points to take control. It pushed the advantage to 46-33 by halftime, and the lead swelled to nearly 20 in the opening minutes of the second half.

Kansas State got within 11 on a couple of occasions, but Peterson and his senior teammates eventually poured it on.

The clinching blow came with about 12 minutes to go, when C.J. Jones fouled Peterson and then was whistled for a technical foul. The ensuing free throws were part of big run by Kansas that pushed the lead to 78-54 with under 10 minutes left in the game.

Dodge City won the opening tip and drilled a three-pointer to begin the game and take an early 3-0 lead. Junction City junior Khaliel Walker answered with a three-pointer on the other end, and the Blue Jays successful shooting night began. The teams played a high level first quarter, and Junction City led 15-12 after the first period.&nbsp;

In the second quarter, Junction City began the quarter with another three from Walker,&nbsp; and then a basket by senior Jackson Hollie gave JCHS a 20-15 lead. The Red Demons of Dodge City battled back with Ty Scheck and Nathan Schulte keeping them in the game. Junction City led 27-25 at halftime.&nbsp;

Third quarter action is when the Junction City Blue Jays locked in and showed their full potential. The Blue Jays turned defense into offense, with several transition layups, and three different players getting a chance for the traditional three-point play. Junction City's Lovell Autry forced three straight steals that turned into layups and eight straight points for the senior in his last ever home game. The Blue Jays outscored Dodge City 25-8 in the quarter, and JCHS led 52-33 at the end of the third quarter.&nbsp;

In the fourth quarter, Junction City cruised to victory, and won the game 70-56. For Junction City, the Blue Jays had five players in double digits. (AP) — Moe Odum scored 23 points, Massamba Diop added 19 and Arizona State pulled away late to beat No. 14 Kansas 70-60 on Tuesday night in what could be Sun Devils coach&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/arizona-state-bobby-hurley-91f03b043ef2fd39ed0e3e6cf0b56bca?utm_source=copy&amp;utm_medium=share">Bobby Hurley’s final home game</a>.

Hurley is the final year of his contract and the administration hasn't given any indications it will be extended amid a fourth mediocre season in the past five years.

The Sun Devils (16-14, 7-10 Big 12) did all they could to send their coach off with a win in a physical, emotional game that included the ejection of Kansas coach Bill Self and one of his assistants.

Arizona State jumped on Kansas early, withstood a big run and made the key plays down the stretch to beat the Jayhawks (21-9, 11-6) for the third time in the Hurley era, with the others 2018 and '19.

Darryn Peterson scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half as the Jayhawks twice rallied from double-digit deficits. Kansas went on a 17-1 run to cut a 20-point halftime deficit to four and trimmed a 12-point deficit to two with four minutes left.

Anthony Johnson answered with a 3-pointer and a layup, kicking off a 11-0 run that secured Arizona State's 15th win over a ranked opponent — second this season — in Hurley's 11 seasons.

Self was hit ejected in the first half for arguing an offensive foul call against Peterson. Assistant Jacque Vaughn was also T'd up and Elmarko Jackson was hit with a flagrant foul for taking down Arizona State's Allen Mukeba on a drive.

🏀 Arizona State beats KU after Bill Self ejected in the first half

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Khamari McGriff scored 18 points and Nate Johnson scored 16 points and Kansas State delivered another blow to West Virginia's NCAA Tournament hopes holding off the Mountaineers 65-63 on Tuesday night.

Reserve Chance Moore scored 18 points, Brenen Lorient scored 14 points, reserve DJ Thomas 12 and Honor Huff 11 for West Virginia.

It was the first win of the season for the Wildcats in which they didn't score 81-or-more points.

PJ Haggerty, the nation’s third-leading scorer, was unexpectedly scratched from the Wildcats' lineup posted an hour-and-a-half before the 7 p.m. CT tip-off.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cjonline.com/story/sports/college/cat-zone/2026/02/19/kansas-state-basketball-coach-candidates-hot-board-jerome-tang-fired/88664100007/">Haggerty wasn't listed on the team’s initial availability</a>&nbsp;report released Monday.

Kansas State said in a release that Haggerty sustained an injury in practice in recent days. He’s listed day-to-day ahead of Saturday’s matchup at Kansas. Haggerty, the Wildcats’ starting point guard, entered Tuesday night second in the Big 12 in scoring, averaging 23.3 points per game.

Despite his absence Kansas State (12-18, 3-14) used a 21-0 run to take a 48-31 lead with 10:53 remaining, its longest scoring run of the season.

But the Wildcats proceeded to leave the door open failing to score a field goal in the final 3:48. McGriff made two free throws for a 57-39 lead with a 7:29 left.

West Virginia (17-13, 8-9) then outscored the Wildcats 19-1 down the stretch and got to with 61-58 with 48 seconds left before McGriff and Johnson each made foul shots to secure the win.

The 2026 6A Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) State Wrestling Tournament wrapped up on Saturday in Overland Park. Below are the final results for the Junction City Boys and Girls wrestling teams.&nbsp;

Junction City Girls Wrestling Results

Six Junction City High School Girl wrestlers placed at the 6A State Wrestling Tournament.

-- (115 lbs) Juliana “Bree” Villanueva - STATE CHAMPION (Back-to-back State Champion at 115 lbs, and three-time State Champion overall). Bree won the finals match (9-2). Following the match, she announced her commitment to Fort Hays State University to wrestle.

(130 lbs) Elizabeth Edgerton-Diaz - STATE CHAMPION (Edgerton-Diaz rallied back in the match after falling behind 4-0 early in the match. She secured a takedown with 0:09 seconds left in the third period and won the match 7-6). (She placed sixth at State last year).

Other Placers for Junction City Girls Wrestling

The Lady Jay wrestling team qualified 12 for the state tournament. The girls wrestling team is coached by Carl Laughlin. "Our girls have worked very hard to get here," Coach Laughlin said. "We set our goals early in the season, and our girls found that switch, and turned it on this weekend and did a great job."&nbsp;

Speaking on the performances of the the two state champions, Junction City High School girls head Wrestling Coach Carl Laughlin commended the work ethic and quality of people both Bree Villanueva and Elizabeth Edgerton-Diaz are. "Starting with Bree, nobody in this state realizes how good this kid is," Laughlin said. "She goes 36-0 this season, and only wrestled two full matches all year. This is her fourth state finals appearances and her third state championship. I'm really going to miss Bree."

As for junior Elizabeth Edgerton-Diaz, Laughlin discussed her work ethic and always being active in several different sports. "Liz is so special, and nobody outworks her," Coach Carl Laughlin said. "She comes to wrestling practice and works hard, then goes to another volleyball practice, and is also always lifting weights. She is such a special athlete and has not lost a match since January 2nd.&nbsp; I told Liz I can do that again, I'm going have a heart attack and die on the side of the mat next time," Laughlin said.

"This whole team came together and it's so good to see how they just supported each other," Coach Laughlin said.&nbsp; Junction City finished sixth as a team with 122 points. 

Junction City Boys Wrestling results

For the Junction City High School boys wrestling team, senior Chris Coy, placed 3rd at weight class 215 lbs.

"Chris did an outstanding job for us this weekend," Junction City boys Wrestling Coach Rick Bazan said. "He beat three kids this weekend that he lost to previously. He really wrestled well and beat those three kids that were all ranked ahead of him, so Chris did an outstanding job."&nbsp;

Overall, six wrestlers qualified for the state tournament. Four of the six wrestlers made it into the "blood round". Chris Coy was the only placer.

STATE RESULTS: Villanueva and Edgerton-Diaz win State Titles for JCHS, Coy finished Third for the Boys

MANHATTAN (AP) —Xavier Edmonds had 15 points, a career-high tying 13 rebounds, three steals and two blocks on Saturday to help TCU beat Kansas State 77-68.

Tanner Toolson scored 14 points for TCU (19-10, 9-7 Big 12), David Punch added 13 and Liutauras Lelevicius 12.

Kansas State (11-18, 2-14) has lost three in a row and nine of 10.

PJ Haggerty had 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Wildcats and Nate Johnson had 16 points, nine assists and three steals. The duo combined for 11 of Kansas State's 18 turnovers, which the Horned Frogs converted into 28 points.

There were five lead changes and nine ties before Edmonds made a layup with 6:43 left until halftime that gave TCU the lead for good at 27-25.

Kansas State twice in the second half trimmed its deficit to a point and David Castillo converted a three-point play that made it 67-65 with 4:44 left in the game. Edmonds scored the next six points to spark a 9-0 run that gave TCU an 11-point lead with two minutes to play.

The Horned Frogs have won five straight in the series and are 16-21 against Kansas State.

Haggerty scored 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting in the first half and Kansas State shot 57% (17 of 30) from the field, but the Horned Frogs took a 41-38 lead into the intermission. TCU scored 12 points off eight Wildcats turnovers before halftime.

Kansas State: Host West Virginia on Tuesday.

The Jayhawks (21-8, 11-5) handed Arizona its first loss of the season on Feb. 9 and rallied behind star freshman Darryn Peterson after being overwhelmed early in the rematch.

🏀 Arizona clinches share of Big 12 title with win over KU

The Emporia High Spartans swept the Junction City boys and girls basketball teams on Friday night at Junction City High School inside the Nest.

Girls recap Emporia 36, Junction City 26

In the girls matchup, Junction City senior Kalia Riley made a three-pointer to begin the game, and the Lady Jays jumped out to an early lead. JCHS sophomore Laniyah Warmack then scored the next two baskets, and the Lady Jays trailed 10-7 at the end of the first quarter.

In second-quarter action, not much happened for either side. Junction City sophomore Isabel Pruitt made a three-pointer right before halftime, and the Lady Jays trailed 14-10 at the break.

In the second half, neither team could really get going. Defense was the story of the game. Emporia led 28-17 after the third period and held on to win the game. The final score was 36-26 in favor of the Spartans.

Junction City finished the year at 2-20 and 0-10 in Centennial League play.

All five seniors were honored after the game. They are: Breya Allen, Morgan Nabus, Nevaeh Rushing, Kalia Riley, and Ava Uhlman.

Boys recap - Emporia 71, Junction City 65

In boys action, this one was a stunner. Junction City led for most of the game, but the Spartans pulled through, ending the game on a remarkable run.

Emporia’s Harrison Trelc made the first basket of the game on a mid-range jumper, and the two teams then traded baskets back and forth throughout the rest of the quarter. It featured a game of runs, as Emporia went on a 10-2 run, and the Blue Jays countered with a 12-2 run. At the end of the first quarter, JCHS led 19-16.

In second-quarter action, it was very evenly matched, as neither team scored much and the defenses really settled in. The Blue Jays outscored the Spartans 8-6 in the quarter, and JCHS led 27-22 at halftime.

In third-quarter action, it certainly seemed as if Junction City were cruising. The Blue Jays started the half on a 15-5 run and led by 15 at 42-27. They then led 50-35 before Emporia hit a corner three at the buzzer to end the third period.

The Spartans certainly used the buzzer-beating three to spark them. EHS started the fourth quarter on an 11-4 run and trailed 54-49. Emporia cranked up their defensive press and gave Junction City fits. The Spartans tied the game at 58 with three minutes to go. The two teams went back and forth, neither able to get a stop down the stretch. The game was tied at 65 with one minute to go, and then Emporia hit a huge three to take the lead. EHS made their free throws down the stretch and won the game 71-65, sweeping Junction City on the season.

Emporia improves to 16-7 on the year, while Junction City falls to 12-10.

The Blue Jays honored all three seniors prior to the game: Lovell Autry, Jackson Hollie, and Jett Thompson.

Junction City is the #6 seed in 6A West and will host #11 seed Dodge City on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.

18 Junction City Wrestlers will Compete at the State Wrestling Tournament

The Blue Jays, who scored 3,099 points to earn second overall out of 12 teams, advanced to the Class 6A State Bowling Championship, which will take place March 4 in Wichita. Individually, Riley Roberts wrapped-up competition by placing second with a series score of 676.

On the boys’ side, Keanu Shannon advanced to state by recording a 10th-place showing with a 643 series score. As a team, JCHS claimed a fourth place showing in Lawrence with 3,303 points.
