A Special Olympics Kansas basketball tournament will be held this Saturday, Feb. 24, at Junction City High School.

In total, 327 athletes will be playing on 33 teams from around the North Central part of the state.

&nbsp;North Central Region Director&nbsp;Krystin Guggisberg said they are still looking for volunteers as several roles still need to be filled. The volunteers would be cheerleading judges, scorekeepers, referees, and individuals to help with skills competitions.

The tournament starts at 9:00 a.m. and runs until 4:00 p.m.

KANSAS CITY (AP0 —Eric Hosmer announced his retirement from baseball Wednesday following a 13-year career that included winning four Gold Gloves and helping lead Kansas City to victory in the 2015 World Series.

Hosmer, 34, was released by the Chicago Cubs on May 25 after hitting .234 with two home runs in 31 games. The first baseman decided not to pursue any other playing opportunities.

“You have to be 110% committed and doing what is necessary both physically and mentally to play at the major league level and I reached a point where I wasn’t there anymore,” Hosmer said. “I’m very satisfied with my career. I feel like I accomplished a lot, was around a lot of great people and have a lot of good stories to tell.”

Hosmer will begin telling those stories on air after partnering with former minor league teammate Anthony Seratelli to form MoonBall Media, which is launching a podcast called “Diggin’ Deep.” Hosmer will be one of the show’s hosts.

“Now that the playing days are over, I feel like I have so many fun stories that I want to give back,” Hosmer said.

Kansas City selected Hosmer third overall in the 2008 amateur draft and he made his major league debut three years later. He spent seven seasons with the Royals before signing an eight-year, $144 million contract with San Diego before the 2018 season.

Hosmer played five seasons for the Padres before being traded to Boston in 2022, then finishing up with the Cubs last year. He had a .276 career batting average and 198 home runs.

Hosmer was named the MVP in his lone All-Star Game appearance in 2016.

Same story, different night for the Junction City Blue Jays as they clawed their way back and won a thrilling overtime game over Topeka High School by a final score of 67-64. 

Junction City led the majority of the first three quarters and even led by as many as twelve on the night, but that lead vanished late in the fourth quarter as the Trojans roared back and eventually took the lead with less than 15 seconds to go in regulation. 

After a timeout by Junction City head coach Nick Perez, Sophomore Lovell Autry drove to the basket, missed the shot, and Junior Larkin Turner missed the putback, but, with less than a second to go, senior Tre Ruffin delivered the game-tying basket to tie the game and sent it to overtime on senior night. 

Overtime was another back-and-forth affair that saw Topeka lead by as many as four. The Blue Jays stormed back and took the lead on a corner three-pointer by Junior Jackson Austin with 13 seconds remaining. The Trojans had a three-point shot miss and then fouled Austin, who delivered two free throws with 2.8 seconds left in the game. A half-court heave was no good, and the Blue Jays won the game and the Centennial League Championship. 

It is the first Centennial League Championship for Junction City and their first league title since the 2001-2002 season. At that time, Junction City was still in the I-70 League. 

In the victory over the Trojans on Tuesday night, Larkin Turner led the way with 24 points, Jackson Austin added 12 points, and Ja'Twaan Williams scored 11. Senior Stewart Mitchell also added 10 points on senior night.

With the win, the Blue Jays secured the Centennial League title and improved to 18-2. Next up for Junction City is hosting Substate next Wednesday, Feb. 28.

The Junction City Lady Jays honored their two seniors Amyah O'Neal and Sara Rexrode on the final night of the regular season. The Lady Jays trailed 9-5 at the end of the first quarter, and then things unraveled from there, losing by a final score of 40-17. 

Junction City was led in scoring by Sara Rexrode, who scored 10 of the 17 points. 

With the loss, the Lady Jays fall to 1-19 to wrap up their regular season. Up next is their Substate matchup next Tuesday, Feb. 27.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Max Abmas became the 12th player in men's Division I history to reach 3,000 career points and Texas held off Kansas State 62-56 on Monday night.

Abmas, a graduate transfer who played his first four seasons for Oral Roberts University, entered play needing six points to reach the milestone. He finished with eight and has scored 450 points for the Longhorns (17-9, 6-7 Big 12 Conference) this season.

Dylan Disu finished with a game-high 20 points for Texas. He made 5 of 11 shots from the floor and 10 of his 11 free throws, adding eight rebounds and three steals. Tyrese Hunter had nine points and seven boards. Dillon Mitchell totaled eight points and 10 rebounds with a pair of blocked shots.

Arthur Kaluma paced the Wildcats (15-11, 5-8) with 15 points and seven rebounds. Tylor Perry added 13 points and four assists, but he also had six of K-State's 13 turnovers. David N'Guessan pitched in with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Disu had eight points, Mitchell scored six and the pair combined for half of Texas' 22 rebounds as the Longhorns took a 27-22 advantage into halftime. N'Guessan had seven points to keep Kansas State close.

He finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Micha Peavy scored a career-high 26 points and Jameer Nelson Jr. hit a&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/i/status/1758936661147218130">fadeaway 3-pointer</a>&nbsp;with 1.1 seconds left to lift TCU to a 75-72 win over Kansas State on Saturday.

Nelson was called for a foul as Kansas State (15-10, 5-7 Big 12) was trying to inbound the ball with 15.6 seconds left. That allowed the Wildcats to tie the game on two Cam Carter free throws. Nelson redeemed himself with a heavily contested shot and the Wildcats' length-of-the-court heave bounced off the backboard.

Peavy scored 17 points in the second half for TCU (18-7, 7-5), including 11 in an 20-2 run to take a 10-point lead with seven minutes remaining before the Wildcats worked their way back into the tie on Carter's free throws.

Emanuel Miller, TCU's leading scorer this season, didn't have a first-half point but finished with 10.

Tylor Perry scored 18 of his 24 points in the second half to lead the Wildcats, making all 12 of his free throws, 10 in the second half. David N'Guessan added 12 points and Arthur Kaluma 11. The Kansas Wesleyan basketball teams will return to Salina on Saturday night in search of big bounce-back wins over the Moundbuilders of Southwestern

WBB: Kansas Wesleyan (13-11, 11-7) vs. SW College (0-23, 0-19)

It has been all KWU of late against Southwestern, the Coyotes winning the last 11 games. They defeated the Moundbuilders 81-68 in the first meeting January 3 in Winfield and have a 24-17 lead in the series since January 2006.

The Moundbuilders entered the week seeking their first victory of the season. They lost to Bethel 81-54 Saturday in North Newton and 85-72 to Oklahoma&nbsp;Wesleyan&nbsp;last Wednesday in Winfield.

Southwestern averages 57 points and allows 79. The Moundbuilders are shooting 32 percent overall, 25.7 percent from long distance, are being outrebounded by 8.1 per game and average 20 turnovers. 

Senior forward Christy Wiebe leads the team in scoring (11.2 points) and rebounding (8.7). Freshman guard Kennedy Ford is next on the scoring list (9.4). Sophomore guard Macey Pond had 18 points in the first game against KWU.

Sophomore Naveah Rushing hit a 3-pointer in the 4th quarter, sophomore Breya Allen knocked down 2 free throws, and senior Sarah Rexrode scored with minimal time left in the game. With the big win, Emporia secured the Centennial League championship.&nbsp; Junction city falls to 1 - 18 on the season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

How did you get into rodeo? I&nbsp;brought my family out into the country life at a young age. I tried almost everything you could do on a horse. Eventually I think the speed, while still needing to be smart and precise made the rodeo aspect with my horses stick.&nbsp;

What advice would you give to youth/high school rodeo athletes? Something I recognize now,&nbsp;is actually finding true happiness in my failures on a horse. It makes me a better rider and competitor. I also think it creates a better connection with your horse when you work through those things. So I would tell them that losing is just as important as winning, if not more so.&nbsp;

What is one thing you want people to know about K-State Rodeo? We are truly a family. We all have a passion and connection through our horses. Not only that but we support and help each other through our rodeos careers, education, and personal lives. Our team is absolutely incredible and I could not have asked for anything better.&nbsp;

Beebe is the third Wildcat to be named the Big 12 Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year since the award’s inception in 2012, as the Kansas City, Kansas, product joins wide receiver Tyler Lockett (2014) and offensive lineman Adam Holtorf (2019). Kansas State’s three Big 12 Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year honorees are the most in the conference, bettering the two put together by Baylor, Iowa State, Oklahoma and Texas.

Beebe was a finalist for the 2023 William V. Campbell Trophy, which is often referred to as the “Academic Heisman,” while he earned First Team Academic All-Big 12 each of the last four seasons and Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Communicators in both 2022 and 2023. A 2023 K-State graduate with a degree in social studies education, Beebe held a 3.84 GPA and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in curriculum and instruction.

Just as impressive as he feats in the classroom, Beebe will go down as one of the best offensive linemen in school history, having played in 51 games with 48 starts and helping the Wildcats earn a 2022 Big 12 Championship and a pair of bowl victories over the last three seasons. What is one thing you want people to know about K-State Rodeo? The K-State Rodeo Club/Team is one of the best organizations to be apart of. It provides students with the opportunity to pursue their rodeo desires all while earning a degree from a highly respected University.&nbsp;

Three Junction City High School football players signed their letter of intent to play college football next season.&nbsp;

The three players who signed were Scott Cary, Ryan McCreath, and Hayden Puryear. All three signed with MidAmerica Nazarene University, which is in Olathe. 

Cary, McCreath, and Puryear all played on this season's Junction City football team, which finished with a 6-4 record. Cary and Puryear played on the defensive line while McCreath anchored the offensive line.

Three Junction City football players sign to play college football next season

The Junction City Lady Jays scored the first basket of the game on Tuesday night, and that was the only lead they would have the rest of the game as the Topeka Hayden Lady Wildcats defeated Junction City 58-20 on Tuesday night. 

After a close first quarter, Topeka Hayden scored 21 points in the second quarter while holding the Lady Jays scoreless. The halftime score was 30-3 in favor of Topeka Hayden. 

Shots began to fall in the second half for Junction City, as five players scored on the night. Three players had four points, and those players were Makenna Hatcher, Morgan Nabus, and Sara Rexrode. 

With the loss, Junction City falls to 1-17 on the season.

The Blue Jays continue their hot streak and stay undefeated at home this season as Junction City beat Topeka Hayden 73-58. 

The first half was very close, tied at the end of the first quarter, then Junction City leading 30-28 at halftime. 

The Blue Jays exploded out of halftime by scoring 26 third-quarter points and holding the Wildcats to eight. The Blue Jay lead was 52-36. 

Despite several comeback attempts from Hayden, the Blue Jays secured a 15-point win thanks to four players in double-digits. Junior Larkin Turner led the way with 22 points, Ja'Twaan Williams had 14, Lovell Autry added 12, and Jackson Austin and Tre Ruffin finished with 11 points. 

With the win, Junction City improves to 16-2 on the season and will hit the road to take on Emporia on Friday.

After a close first quarter, Topeka Hayden scored 21 points in the second quarter while holding the Lady Jays scoreless. The halftime score was 30-3 in favor of Topeka Hayden. Shots began to fall in the second half for Junction City, as five players scored on the night. Three players had four points, and those players were Makenna Hatcher, Morgan Nabus, and Sara Rexrode. With the loss, Junction City falls to 1-17 on the season.Boys recapThe Blue Jays continue their hot streak and stay undefeated at home this season as Junction City beat Topeka Hayden 73-58. The first half was very close, tied at the end of the first quarter, then Junction City leading 30-28 at halftime. K-State Rodeo hosts a lot of events throughout the year in addition to the K-State Rodeo in February including a high school rodeo, ranch rodeo, iron women jackpot, memorial team roping and event specific clinics with professional rodeo athletes.

Meet Maddy Rohr - K-State Rodeo Athlete

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Four Kansas State football players – offensive linemen&nbsp;Cooper Beebe&nbsp;and&nbsp;KT Leveston, defensive end&nbsp;Khalid Duke&nbsp;and tight end&nbsp;Ben Sinnott&nbsp;– have been invited to participate in the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, as the NFL on Tuesday released the list of 321 prospects requested for the multi-day event in Indianapolis, Indiana.

It marks the second-straight year the Wildcats have had four players selected to participate in the NFL Combine, which is the most since K-State had five participants in 2013. Additionally, the four invitees this season are the second most among returning Big 12 teams.

The 2024 NFL Scouting Combine runs February 26 through March 4 with on-field workouts inside Lucas Oil Stadium slated for February 29 through March 3. Those workouts will be televised live on NFL Network. The NFL Combine is one of the most important events for prospects leading up to the NFL Draft, which will be held April 25-27 in Detroit, Michigan.

A 2023 Consensus All-American who became the first offensive lineman in school history to earn the distinction, Beebe played in 51 games with 48 starts as he was a two-time First Team All-American and Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year. A native of Kansas City, Kansas, Beebe was a finalist for the Outland Trophy and William V. Campbell Trophy – often referred to as the “Academic Heisman” – while he was a finalist for the Lombardi Award in 2023.

Leveston saw action in 50 career games with 32 starts – including a streak of 27 straight starts to finish out his career – as he earned All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors in both 2022 and 2023. A native of Waco, Texas, Leveston, along with Beebe, helped the Wildcats rank in the top 30 nationally in 11 offensive categories, including scoring (10th – 37.1 points per game), rushing (11th – 204.1 yards per game), third down conversions (11th – 47.9%), rushing touchdowns (12th – 32) and first downs (12th – 310).

Four Wildcats Invited to 2024 NFL Combine

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Kansas coach Bill Self said he didn’t curse or yell, and wasn’t really trying to get thrown out of the game. Still, he had seen enough in a lopsided road loss for his sixth-ranked Jayhawks.

Self was ejected for the first time in his 21 seasons at Kansas after getting two technical fouls in quick succession with just under six minutes remaining in a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-texas-tech-basketball-score-44de925dfc8f30e91372e7d06feb93e5" target="_blank">79-50 loss at Texas Tech</a>&nbsp;on Monday night. He became the third Big 12 coach this month with a first-time ejection at his school.

“I did say a magic word, I guess, multiple times that got me a couple of techicals,” Self said.

Those technical fouls came right after Kansas center Hunter Dickinson was called for an offensive foul under the basket, though that wasn’t all that bothered the coach.

“I honestly feel the game’s not being called the way it needs to be called,” Self said. “Regardless of it’s our favor or their favor, it makes no difference to me.”

Pop Isaacs made all four free throws after Self left the court for a 63-43 lead.

“That was frustration, but I felt that all year,” Self said. “So, good officials ... good officials, I just don’t see it the same way that it’s being called.”

Self said there has been a lot of physicality, “more this year than there has been in years past.”

It was the 722nd game at Kansas for Self, whose only other ejection in 31 seasons overall as a college head coach came in 1999 while with Tulsa at Wyoming.

Houston coach Kelvin Sampson got two technical fouls and was ejected with 15:08 remaining in a home win February 6.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/houston-oklahoma-state-basketball-score-shead-09f5cb4b675e83182250b12abda87d6e" target="_blank">Sampson stormed to the other end of the court</a>&nbsp;and started yelling at the officials for not calling fouls against Oklahoma State.

Sampson had to be restrained by his players and assistant coaches and ushered off the floor. It was his first ejection in 10 years of coaching at Houston.

Baylor’s Scott Drew, who also in his 21st season is tied with Self as the Big 12’s longest-tenured coaches,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/drew-ejected-rhoades-big-12-officials-a88f8bf6bac105a0402accad03be16f1" target="_blank">got his first career ejection February 2</a>&nbsp;after two technical fouls in a home win over Iowa State.
