STILLWATER, Okla.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kansas State knew it would be a tough challenge going into Boone Pickens Stadium. But the Wildcats didn’t know that Oklahoma State would save one of its best efforts this season for a Friday night game.

Will Howard rushed for 104 yards and one touchdown, DJ Giddens added 65 rushing yards and Treshaun Ward had 59 on the ground, but K-State suffered a 29-21 loss at Oklahoma State in front of a sellout crowd of 53,855.

The Wildcats, who sought their first win in Stillwater since 2017, kept things close for a majority of the first half, and came back from a 26-7 deficit to make things interesting down the stretch.

Howard, who passed for 152 yards, accounted for two scores, including a brilliant 70-yard rush to the 1-yard line to set up a touchdown pass to Ben Sinnott to make it 10-7 in the second quarter. Then he rushed for a six-yard score that pulled K-State to within 29-21 with 8 minutes, 56 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

But K-State struggled to extend drives. That became troubling down the stretch when the Wildcats had a chance.

Oklahoma State got tricky as quarterback Alan Bowman appeared to speak with coaches on the sideline and tight end tight end Josiah Johnson took the snap on fourth-and-1, but the Wildcats stiffened and the offense regained possession at the K-State 40 with 5:17 left.

However, the Wildcats, who went just 6-for-16 on third down and 1-for-4 on fourth down, were unable to turn another possession into any points.

After the K-State defense forced a punt, the offense regained possession with 3 minutes to go and needing a touchdown and a 2-point conversion to tie the game. However, Oklahoma State linebacker Collin Oliver knocked down Howard’s final pass attempt on fourth down and the Cowboys drained the clock.

Howard completed 15-of-34 passes for 152 yards and one touchdown and three interceptions. Sinnott had four catches for 39 yards and one touchdown and Giddens had four catches for 28 yards.

Although Oklahoma State outgained K-State 412-372, the Wildcats’ defense allowed just one rushing touchdown and forced Oklahoma State place-kicker Alex Hale to make field goals of 43, 34, 53, 31 and 25 yards.

K-State, 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big 12, came off a 44-31 win against UCF followed by a bye week. The Wildcats next prepare to visit Texas Tech. Oklahoma State, 3-2 and 1-1, also came off a bye week. The Cowboys get three of their next four games at home.

Although K-State thumped Oklahoma State 48-0 in Manhattan last season, the Wildcats had difficulties throughout the contest on Friday. Already playing without starting cornerback Jacob Parrish, the Wildcats suffered another key loss when Will Lee III, their other starting cornerback, went down while making a tackle in the second quarter.

K-State faced a 20-7 halftime deficit, which only grew when Hale drilled a 53-yard field goal and a 31-yarder in the third quarter.

But K-State didn’t quit. It scored its second touchdown of the game when Ward took the ball 11 yards. Howard ran in a 2-point conversion to make it 26-15 at the end of the third quarter.

Hale’s 25-yard field goal gave the Cowboys a 29-15 advantage with 11:31 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter before the Wildcats mounted a comeback that fell just short.

Oklahoma State, which had scored 14 points in the first quarter this season, got on top early when Gordon Ollie rushed two yards over the middle to cap a 15-play, 72-yard drive that took 5:24.

K-State tried to respond but Cameron Epps intercepted a deep pass, marking the first Cowboys’ first turnover forced since September 9. Hale added a 45-yard field goal to make it 10-0.

Moments later, the Wildcats found the end zone.

Howard rushed to his right for an incredible 70-yard gain and reviews showed that his dive landed just before the pylon as he tried to outrun Kendal Daniels. However, Howard bootlegged and hit Sinnott deep in the end zone for a score two plays later.

It was the biggest offensive highlight for K-State in a difficult first two quarters, as Oklahoma State led 287-133 in total offense and had scoring drive of 15 plays, eight plays and eight plays.

The K-State defense provided a highlight of its own. After Elijah Collins rushed four yards on a fake punt for a first down, then Jaden Bray caught a pass at the 35 and raced to the 2-yard line on a 45-yard catch-and-run, the Wildcats made a crucial stand.

K-State held Oklahoma State three straight plays inside the 4 and Marques Sigle blocked Hale’s 21-yard field goal attempt.

Oklahoma State put together another drive and Hale made a 34-yard field goal with 55 seconds remaining in the second quarter to make it 13-7 — a lead that grew when Epps made his second interception and raced 35 yards into the end zone for a touchdown before the teams went into the locker room.

On Thursday the Arena Football League announced in a press conference that it would be adding the remaining Champions Indoor Football teams for the upcoming 2024 season.

This includes the Salina Liberty, Southwest Kansas Storm, Wichita Regulators, and a brand new team in the Iowa Rampage out of Council Bluffs.

The new AFL is projected to consist of four regions spanning the continental United States, with approximately 20 teams joining the fold in the first year.

Kickoff for the first official league game has already been scheduled for Saturday, April 27, 2024.

More information will be made available in a press conference hosted by the Salina Liberty on Friday, October 6th at 4:00.

This event is open to the public and will be held at the Salina Chamber Annex in town.

Arena Football League Announces CIF Merger

CHICAGO (AP) — Dick Butkus, a fearsome middle linebacker for the Chicago Bears, has died, the team announced Thursday. He was 80.

According to a statement released by the team, Butkus' family confirmed that he died in his sleep overnight at his home in Malibu, California.

Butkus was a Hall of Famer whose bone-rattling tackles made him one of the most intimidating players in NFL history. He was the quintessential modern linebacker, a disruptive force who roamed sideline to sideline and left a trail of broken opponents behind.

He was a first-team All-Pro selection five times and made the Pro Bowl in eight of his nine seasons before knee injuries forced his retirement at age 31. Despite a short career, Butkus came to define his position. He routinely ranks among the NFL’s top 100 players.

Junction City is 3-2 heading into the matchup, with Manhattan's record being 4-1. Both teams have been defeated by Washburn Rural this season, with Junction City losing to the Junior Blues last week by a score of 28-7, and Manhattan lost to Rural two weeks ago by a score of 35-28.&nbsp;

Manhattan brings a high-powered offense into the game, led by quarterback Carter Aslin who has thrown for 611 yards on the year and also rushed the football for nearly 700 yards and eight touchdowns. Aslin and the Indian's offense will go up against a strong Blue Jay defense led by Michael Boganowski. Junction City has only given up two touchdowns in the past three games. The USD 475 Board of Education has approved the guaranteed maximum price from Hutton Construction for $4,420,000 to add two additional fields and lighting to the existing two fields at Junction City High School on Monday.

BOE takes a step forward on new softball and baseball fields

The JC Jr Jays took on the Wamego Jr Raiders Saturday at Blue Jay Stadium.

The fourth grade team lost to Wamego by a score of 32-14, making their record 2-1.&nbsp;The fifth grade team fell to Wamego 56-30, making their record 2-1 as well. The sixth grade team came away with a victory, winning 32-8 and staying undefeated on the year. Their record is 4-0.&nbsp;

The 8th grade JCMS Wildcats got back on the winning track last week, beating Emporia by a score of 12-6, improving to 4-1 on the season. The 8th grade B team stayed undefeated beating Emporia by a score of 30-6. 

The 7th grade team earned their first win of the season, beating Emporia 30-21. Their record now stands at 1-4 on the season. The 7th grade B team tied with Emporia with a score of 18-18. 

The middle school teams are back in action tonight taking on the Saints from the Topeka Hayden school district.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs appeared on their way to a blowout against the struggling New York Jets.

A few mistakes by the star quarterback made it uncomfortably close, but he and the Chiefs shook off a subpar performance during which they blew a 17-point lead and then held on for a 23-20 victory Sunday night.

“I knew I put us in two bad positions,” said Mahomes, who was intercepted twice. “No one points fingers in that locker room. We all play together. Not everything is going to be pretty, but the guys responded and we found a way to win.”

With pop superstar&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/taylor-swift-travis-kelce-chiefs-jets-1b1b3ba43139acefcbdf52072b018154">Taylor Swift watching Travis Kelce and the Chiefs</a>&nbsp;for the second straight game, this time from a suite at MetLife Stadium, Kansas City was able to bounce back.

After the Chiefs (3-1) regained the lead on Harrison Butker’s 26-yard field goal with 10:51 remaining, Zach Wilson made his first big mistake for the Jets when he lost a snap. Tershawn Wharton recovered and Mahomes and the Chiefs got the ball at the Jets 47.

Michael Carter II intercepted Mahomes on third-and-20 from the Jets 40 — but it was negated by a holding call on Sauce Gardner. Replays showed it was a questionable call and an irate Jets coach Robert Saleh stormed down the sideline to shout at an official.

“Fourth quarter, crunch time," Gardner said. "I don’t even know what to say.”

Mahomes, who had a 25-yard run on third-and-23 to extend the drive, ran for 9 yards on another third down to the Jets 2, sealing the victory.

“Listen, I thought it was a hold,” said Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who tied Tom Landry for fourth on the career list with his 250th regular-season victory. “I've got to go back and look at the tape on it. He was on the other side of the field. They’re aggressive, so they’re going to get a couple of those during the game. Sauce is as good as there is in the league, but he might have had a little bit of fabric there.”

Moments later, a still-angry Saleh was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty — and the clock hit zero on a bitter loss for the Jets (1-3).

“Just that whole drive after the fumble was unfortunate,” Saleh said. “That’s extremely unfortunate, especially for a prime-time football game.”

Mahomes, who became the fastest to 200 NFL touchdown passes, was 18 of 30 for 203 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 51 yards to set the franchise's career rushing mark for a quarterback. Isiah Pacheco rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries, and Kelce had six catches for 60 yards.

"It was a lot of hard grinding tonight," Pacheco said.

Wilson had his best game since taking over for the injured Aaron Rodgers, going 28 of 39 for 245 yards and two touchdowns. But he blamed himself for the loss because of the lost fumble.

"To be driving right there, to drop a snap, I can not do that,” Wilson said.

Trailing 20-12, Wilson and the Jets opened the second half with the ball and marched down the field. Wilson found Allen Lazard in the middle of the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown pass. The quarterback then avoided a tackle attempt, rolled out and zipped forward for a 2-point conversion that tied the game at 20.

Mahomes threw the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-patrick-mahomes-200-touchdown-passes-19a81d6761a2b0919b5e5fd141186c77">200th touchdown pass</a>&nbsp;of his career, reaching the milestone in his 84th game to break Dan Marino’s NFL record when he connected with Noah Gray on a 34-yard score with 3:24 left in the first quarter. Marino threw his 200th TD pass in his 89th NFL game with Miami in 1989.

The Jets got on the scoreboard early in the second quarter when Chiefs right tackle Jawaan Taylor was called for a facemask penalty on Bryce Huff in the end zone, resulting in a safety.

The Coyotes enter the game having won their last two - 35-28 over McPherson two weeks ago at JRI Stadium and 24-14 over Bethel last week in North Newton. They scored 17 points in the second quarter against Bethel, led 17-14 at intermission and held the Threshers scoreless in the second half.

The offense has come around the last two weeks after a slow start. Quarterback Richard Lara was 28 of 42 passing (66.7 percent) for 340 yards, four touchdowns and one interception in the two contests. He had a huge game against Bethel going 19 of 29 for 232 yards and three touchdowns.

Nick Allsman is the top rusher on the season with 239 yards on 61 carries and two touchdowns. Tyler Boston has 204 yards on 57 tries and one touchdown. Rhadarious Lomax-Spivey has a team-best eight receptions while Luke Armstrong and Boston each have seven.

Defense has been KWU's forte. Opponents are averaging 17.2 points, 287 total yards - 157.2 passing and 129.8 rushing. The Coyotes have forced 11 turnovers, six fumbles and five interceptions.

Placekicker Talon Cope has been superb. He has made three of four field goals - the longest from 45 yards out last week - and is perfect on 13 extra point attempts.

The Bulldogs have been a surprise this season. They have won their last two games - 60-17 over Ottawa in Ottawa and 42-21 versus Avila last week in McPherson. The loss was to Saint Mary 36-32 September 9 in McPherson. They're 2-0 on the road this season.

McPherson's offense has been outstanding. The Bulldogs are averaging 43.8 points and 473.6 total yards that includes 289.4 passing.

Junior quarterback Tristan Szabo has had a hot hand through five games, completing 56 percent of his passes for 1,407 yards, 17 touchdowns and four interceptions. He also has 179 yards rushing three more scores. Traven Lewis-Johnson and Alex Hill are the top receivers - Lewis-Johnson 19 receptions for 389 yards and Hill 15 for 209 yards. Each has four touchdowns.

Linebacker Marquis Willoughby has a team-best 49 tackles that include 6.5 for loss and has an interception. Nehemiah Figueroa has four interceptions. Opponents average 24.4 points and 333.6 yards.

The Bulldogs were 5-5 in last season but three of the losses were by one point along with the two-point setback against KWU.

"The defenses that we're playing are statistically very good so it's good to see the (offense) go out and perform. (The line) is not blowing assignments up front, we're taking care of the ball and we're protecting the quarterback. (McPherson) is going to drop back and pass 25, 30 times. We just need to make sure the quarterback is uncomfortable as possible and that relates to condensing the pocket which takes all the guys up front. (McPherson) is certainly tough, coach (Jeremiah) Fiscus does an excellent job down there. They have a very dynamic offense, honestly, and are very good at what they do. We expect a lot of shifts and motions and we need to make sure we're prepared. It will be a big challenge and we look forward to it."

Wesleyan faces McPherson in 100th meeting between teams Saturday

The Junction City Blue Jays were defeated by Washburn Rural Junior Blues 28-7 on Friday night at Blue Jay Stadium. 

It was a tough night offensively for the Blue Jays as they were held to just seven points. They moved the ball in the second half but were stopped on the two-yard line late in the fourth quarter and turned the ball over as well. 

The final score does not represent how the game went. Junction City had multiple chances in this game, but it was the defense and special teams for Washburn Rural that won the game. The Junior Blues scored twice on special teams and once on defense. On special teams, they recovered the football in the end zone on a botched snap/exchange with the punter, and the other special team's touchdown was in the second half when Washburn Rural blocked a punt and then scooped the football and scored. Week five high school football local scores 

The Junction City Blue Jay football team will host Washburn Rural on Friday night at Blue Jay Stadium for week five of the high school football season. Friday night is also homecoming night for Junction City High School. The coronation of the king and queen will occur at halftime.

The Blue Jays are 3-1 on the year and currently are on a three game winning streak. Junction City is coming off back-to-back dominant performances, where they defeated Bishop Carroll 41-7 last week and beat McPherson 27-2 in week three. Over the course of the past two weeks, the Blue Jays have outscored their opponents 68-9. As for the Junior Blues of Washburn Rural, they are undefeated on the year at 4-0. Washburn Rural is coming off a win against defending 6A State Champion Manhattan in a back and forth game in which the Junior Blues won 35-28.

Washburn Rural has a very talented offense. It revolves around their senior quarterback, Branton Deweese. The Junior Blues have scored at least 25 points in all four games this season.

Junction City head football coach Randall Zimmerman knows this will be a big test for his team. "They are very good, very physical, and we have got to stay in our zones," Zimmerman said. “If we are playing right, hopefully it is a great contest. I am very much looking forward it."

High School Football week five matchups 

NEW YORK (AP) — Taylor Swift's trip to watch the Kansas City Chiefs' Travis Kelce play football on Sunday didn't just have the internet talking nonstop. Following the 12-time Grammy Award winner's appearance at Arrowhead Stadium, jersey sales for the All-Pro tight-end seemingly skyrocketed.

According to sportswear and fan merchandise company Fanatics, Kelce was one of the top 5 selling NFL players Sunday. He “saw a nearly 400% spike in sales throughout the Fanatics network of sites, including NFLShop.com,” a spokesperson told The Associated Press via email.

Sales spiked on the same day that Swift was spotted in Kansas City, watching the Chiefs play the Chicago Bears alongside Kelce’s mother, Donna, from one of the football stadium's glass-enclosed suites.

Kelce did not speak to reporters afterward, but he was spotted leaving Arrowhead with Swift by his side.

Still, just about everyone in the Kansas City locker room was buzzing about the news after Sunday's game, including coach Andy Reid, who joked that “I set them up.”

Swift has always been reluctant to discuss her personal life in public, but rumors have been flying about the popstar and the pro football player in recent months — notably after a July episode of Kelce's “New Heights” podcast, when he said he was disappointed that he didn’t get to meet Swift and gift her a friendship bracelet during Kansas City stop on her Eras Tour. Former Junction City Blue Jay running back DJ Giddens picked up national awards following his historic performance on Saturday night for the Kansas State Wildcats.

Giddens, who graduated from Junction City High School, rushed the football for 207 yards and four touchdowns on Saturday night at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. Per K-State Athletics, it was the first time in school history that a player rushed the ball for 200 yards and scored four touchdowns in a single game. He also caught eight passes for 86 yards. Giddens was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and the Doak Walker National Running Back of the Week.

The Wildcats are currently 3-1 on the season and are off this weekend before traveling to Stillwater next Friday (October 6) to take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– After a record-setting first season, head coach&nbsp;Jerome Tang&nbsp;has agreed to new 7-year contract through the 2029-30 season to continue his leadership of the Kansas State men’s basketball program, Director of Athletics&nbsp;Gene Taylor&nbsp;announced on Monday afternoon (September 25).

The new contract replaces his original 6-year deal that Tang agreed to become the 25th&nbsp;men’s basketball coach in school history on March 21, 2022. Tang now has 7 years left on his agreement that runs until April 30, 2030. The second-year head coach will be paid $3 million in 2023-24 and receive a $100,000 increase to his salary in each remaining contract year culminating in a $3.6 million base for the 2029-30 season. There are also four retention bonuses of $200,000 following the 2023-24, 2024-25, 2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons.

The new contract was unanimously approved by University leadership.

The run to the Elite Eight was remarkable, but what separates Coach Tang is his pure love of his players and the relationships that he builds with everyone that he encounters. 🏀 MBB: K-State's Jerome Tang agrees to contract extension


The
Junction City Middle School football teams faced off against the Eisenhower Middle School Eagles
out of Manhattan this past Thursday. The seventh grade team lost by a
score of 28-8. The seventh grade B team did earn their first win of
the season by a score of 6-0. 



The
eighth grade team suffered their first loss of the season by a score
of 16-8, making their season record 3-1. The eighth grade B team
improved to 4-0 on the season, winning by a score of 6-0. 



Both
B team games were shortened by lighting in the area. The middle
school teams will be in action again Thursday facing Emporia.

sixth grade Jr Jays improved to 3-0 on the season beating Riley County
by a score of 53-6 on Saturday. The fourth&nbsp; and fifth grade teams were off.



All
three teams return to action this Saturday at Blue Jay stadium to
face Wamego. Kick off for the fourth grade team is scheduled for 8:30
a.m., the fifth grade will be at 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. for the sixth grade.

The Lady Jay tennis team traveled to Salina on Thursday for the Salina South Varsity Tennis Invite. 

 Eight teams participated in the event and all competitors were in the same singles and doubles flights creating 16 man brackets.  The Lady Jays had two events finish in the top four.   Hannah Micheel went 3-1 finishing in 3rd place.  Her lone loss was to the top seeded player.  However, she was able to get an 8-4 victory against a Salina South player in the 3rd place match who had defeated her earlier in the season. 

 In doubles, Stephanie Stanislow and Ohemaa Sarpong teamed up and won their first two rounds, before losing in the semifinals and consolation matches earning them a 4th place finish.  The other Lady Jay doubles team of Rebecca Monroe and Sarah Chang went 2-2 on the day finishing in 10th place, while Julia Cho went 2-2 on the day earning 11th place.  Overall, the Lady Jays team finished in 4th place. 

  The Lady Jays next travel to Topeka on Tuesday, September 26 for the Topeka West Tennis Invitational.  Matches will start at 9 am at the Kossover Tennis Center.
