LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Lance Leipold did plenty of background work on Kansas before accepting its head-coaching job a couple of years ago. But in the pantheon of the obscure, he never looked up the last time the Jayhawks started 4-0 in back-to-back seasons.

When told it had been 108 years, Leipold replied Saturday: “I'm glad I didn't do all my research.”

“Sometimes you don't know what you're really stepping into until you there,” Leipold added with a smile, after leading the once-suffering Jayhawks to a 38-27 victory over BYU in the Cougars' Big 12 debut. “Like I told our team, I'm really proud of them when you look at the short time what we've been able to do.”

Jalon Daniels threw three touchdown passes, including two in the second half to Luke Grimm, and the Jayhawks got a pair of scores from their opportunistic defense in rallying from a 17-14 halftime deficit. Cobee Bryant returned a fumble for the game's first touchdown, and Kenny Logan Jr. brought back an interception early in the third quarter for another score.

The offense got going down the stretch, helping the Jayhawks win their eighth straight September game.

“When you walked in here in the past you would hear frustration,” explained Leipold, whose team will try to match last year's 5-0 start when it heads to No. 3 Texas next weekend. “You walk in there now and it's different, and that's where it should be."

Kedon Slovis was 30 of 51 for 357 yards with two TDs and two interceptions for BYU. But the Cougars (3-1) were imbalanced on offense, running 22 times for nine yards, and settling for two field goals in the red zone proved costly.

“We just battled through,” Logan said. “We showed we can take some jabs.”

The Jayhawks, who struggled to put away Nevada last week, rolled into their conference opener averaging more than 500 yards per game. But the Cougars consistently put pressure on Daniels, who at times needed every bit of his athleticism just to get the ball away, and their defense held Kansas to one offensive touchdown in the first half.

The other score? That came on Bryant's bone-jarring hit on BYU's second play from scrimmage. The ball popped out, Bryant was there to scoop it, and the cornerback — who had a pick later in the game- returned it 22 yards for a touchdown.

The Cougars refused to let the turnover set the tone for the game. They answered with back-to-back 75-yard touchdown drives, then used another long drive in the final minutes of the first half to add a field goal for a 17-14 lead at the break.

That's when the Kansas defense got into the act again.

On the third play of the third quarter, Slovis had his pass batted into the air by tight end Isaac Rex, off the hands of linebacker Jayson Gilliom and into the arms of Logan, who returned the interception 33 yards for a go-ahead touchdown.

“The defense played lights-out,” Daniels said. “Stuff you can’t make up. That doesn’t happen every day.”

“We gave them 14 points,” Rex said later. “If we didn't do that, we would have had enough points to win the game.”

The Cougars could only muster an answering field goal, and the Kansas offense finally started humming.

Daniels swiftly led his team down field, converting an early third down with his legs before finding Grimm in the back of the end zone on another third-down play for a touchdown. And after Bryant picked off Slovis on fourth down to end BYU's ensuing drive, the Jayhawks marched other way with Daniels finding Grimm again to extend the lead to 35-20.

BYU's Keelan Marion scored midway through the fourth quarter, but the Jayhawks added a field goal to put the game away.

"There were some moments we want back,” Cougars defensive lineman Tyler Batty said. “There’s a lot to learn form here.”

BYU survived at Arkansas last week by scoring the last 17 points in a 38-31 win. But the Cougars looked downright tired in the second half Saturday, perhaps worn down by the physical nature of back-to-back road games against Power Five opponents.

Kansas defensive coordinator Brian Borland made it clear before the season that his group, which struggled mightily at times last year, would not hold back the Jayhawks this season. On Saturday, his defense was the difference in the outcome.

BYU plays its Big 12 home opener against fellow newcomer Cincinnati on Friday night.

Kansas visits Texas next Saturday for the first time since a 57-56 double-overtime win in 2021.

The Coyotes are back on the road Saturday for a Kansas Conference game against Bethel. Kickoff is 6 p.m. at Thresher Stadium in North Newton.

Bethel's 30-24 victory last season in JRI Stadium and the Graves Family Sports Complex ended KWU's 13-game winning streak. It was the Coyotes first loss to the Threshers since the 2008 season. KWU has an 18-4 edge since the 2001 season.

The Coyotes evened their record with a 35-28 victory over previously unbeaten Friends last Saturday at JRI Stadium and the Graves Family Sports Complex. The offense produced a season-high 353 yards that included a season-best 245 rushing yards.

Nick Allsman&nbsp;led the ground attack with 125 yards on 17 carries and&nbsp;Tyler Boston&nbsp;had 96 yards on 19 attempts. Both scored a touchdown as well. Quarterback&nbsp;Richard Lara&nbsp;was 9 of 13 passing for 108 yards, no interceptions and one touchdown - a 74-yard catch and run by&nbsp;Rhadarious Lomax-Spivey&nbsp;in the third quarter that broke a 7-7 tie. Lara also ran for KWU's final score in the fourth quarter and was not sacked during the game.

Luke Armstrong&nbsp;returned a punt 88 yards for touchdown early in the third quarter that gave the Coyotes a 21-7 lead. He also returned a kickoff 28 yards and was chosen the KCAC's Special Teams Player of the Week.. Friends entered the game averaging just under 56 points and 533 total yards - 494 rushing - but had 388 total yard and 320 rushing Saturday. Linebacker&nbsp;Shaylan Lewis&nbsp;had a team-best 13 tackles, linebacker&nbsp;Ricco Moore&nbsp;11 and safety&nbsp;Julian Urioste&nbsp;10 for the Coyotes.

KWU closes out play against the Kessinger Division a week from Saturday when McPherson comes to town. Following a bye week October 7 the Coyotes begin play against fellow Bissell Division opponents starting with Avila on October 14 in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Threshers defeated Avila 42-26 last Saturday in Kansas City. They led 35-6 at halftime but surrendered 20 points in the fourth quarter.&nbsp;They opened the season with victories over Sterling and Saint Mary but lost to Ottawa 28-24 September 9 in North Newton. Bethel doesn't run the flexbone but does employ a triple option offense that has been highly effective. The Threshers average 324 yards rushing, 420 total yards and are scoring 41 points per game. They had 405 total yards against Avila that included 264 on the ground. Bethel, like Friends, has a dynamic quarterback in DJ Ciers. He had 107 yards and two touchdowns running the ball and threw for 141 yards and two more scores against Avila. Ciers has 610 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns this season and averages 152.5 yards rushing and 95.5 yards passing per game.

 Bethel's defense has been stellar as well. Opponents are averaging 19.8 points and 72 yards rushing per game.

Linebacker Kade Miller has a team-best 31 tackles and linebacker Tate Seaboldt 29. Miller was the KCAC Defensive Player of the Week after making seven tackles and returning an interception 44 yards for a touchdown against Avila - his second pick six of the season.

"I was just super impressed by the overall effort by our guys. The energy on the sideline was incredible and the fans were awesome. The difference between 1-3 and 2-2 is massive - it was really a great night.&nbsp;Lara made great decisions with the ball and the zero sack thing is just huge. The final piece of this is making sure that we can stretch the defense vertically (with the passing game). Bethel is not the same offense (as Friends) but has a similar philosophy, they run the ball about 90 percent of the time. Their quarterback is extremely athletic and very, very fast. We need to find a way to make sure that he's on the ground at the end of the play and not making moves and cutting up the field. Their defense is very similar to Evangel who we didn't have a ton of success against."

K-Dub Football travels to North Newton on Saturday to face Bethel

The Junction City Blue Jays defeated the Bishop Carroll Golden Eagles on Friday night at Blue Jay Stadium by a score of 41-7.&nbsp;

The Blue Jays were excellent on both sides of the ball, forcing three turnovers in the first quarter, including two interceptions by sophomore Lovell Autry. The offense capitalized on all three turnovers, turning each one into touchdowns. They added another score late in the first half and Junction City led 27-0 at halftime.&nbsp;

The second half was very run heavy for the Blue Jays, and they led 41-0 for most of the second half. Bishop Carroll scored a late touchdown to get on the scoreboard.&nbsp;

It was a big night offensively for quarterback Brock Bazan and running back MC Taylor. For Bazan, he had three passing touchdowns, and for Taylor, he had three rushing touchdowns. In the last two games combined, Junction City has outscored their opponents 68-9.&nbsp;

Junction City head football coach Randall Zimmerman was pleased with his teams performance tonight. "I'm incredibly proud of the advancements our kids have made since week one," Zimmerman said. "We know we have a long ways to go yet, but I'm proud of where we are."&nbsp;

Junction City will host Washburn Rural next Friday night at Blue Jay Stadium on homecoming night.&nbsp;

High School Football week four matchups

The Junction City Lady Jays Volleyball team was in action last night for their only home match of the season.&nbsp;

The Freshmen team played against Topeka West, while the JV and Varsity teams went against Great Bend.&nbsp;

The Varsity match was a dual, which is best of five. Great Bend defeated Junction City, winning the match three sets to zero. The scores for each set were, 25-13, 25-12, and 25-10.&nbsp;

The JV team did win a set, but lost the match against Great Bend as well. The Freshmen team was the only team that came away with a victory, beating Topeka West in two sets.&nbsp;

The Varsity team will travel to Tonganoxie for a tournament on Saturday.&nbsp;

Junction City Lady Jay Volleyball results from home match on Tuesday night

The Lady Jay tennis team competed in their home quadrangular on Monday.&nbsp; Teams in the event included Junction City, Manhattan, Shawnee Mission East and Shawnee Mission South.&nbsp;&nbsp; 

As a team, the Lady Jay tennis team lost by only a single match in each round, dropping each round 3-2.&nbsp; However, there were many highlights on the night as Hannah Micheel defeated all three of her opponents at the top singles spot defeating Shawnee Mission South 8-6, Shawnee Mission East 8-0 and Manhattan 8-3.&nbsp; In the first round Rebecca Monroe and Sarah Chang teamed up to defeat their Shawnee Mission South opponent 8-1 at the #2 doubles spot.&nbsp; At the top doubles position, Stephanie Stanislow and Ohemaa Sarpong won their doubles match against Shawnee Mission East in a tiebreaker and Emma Young rounded out the wins by defeating her opponent from Manhattan in the final round 8-5.&nbsp; 

The Lady Jays next play in the Salina South Tennis Invite this Thursday, September 21.&nbsp; Matches will start at 1 pm and be held at both the Salina South and Salina Central tennis courts.

The Junction City Lady Jays volleyball team will host their only home match of the year tonight against Great Bend.

The Lady Jays are currently 1-5 on the season. Despite the record, Junction City head volleyball coach Katie DeHoff remains optimistic heading into tonight's matchup and for the rest of the regular season. "Our record does not necessarily indicate how we have played this season," DeHoff said.&nbsp; "We are really showing a lot of growth. We are focusing on the things that we do well and are starting to focus on things on the other side of the net."&nbsp;

In addition to it being their only home match of the season, tonight is also senior night. There are three seniors on the team and they are: Armani Coleman, Anja VonSprecklesen and Sara Rexrode. All will be honored prior to the match. "They have quite literally been with me since they were freshmen," DeHoff said. "It's been really cool to see them grow into a program that they are really proud of and to really grow into their roles as leaders."&nbsp;

The varsity matchup tonight between the Lady Jays and Great Bend is a dual, which is best of five sets. The varsity match follows the senior night ceremony and is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.&nbsp;

The freshmen and JV teams will also be active tonight. Freshmen will be in a dual with Topeka West in the Aux at 5:00 p.m. and JV will play against Great Bend at 5:00 p.m. in the main gym.&nbsp;

The eighth-grade team won their matchup, defeating Anthony Middle School 28-6 and improve their record to 3-0 on the year. The eighth-graders have also beat Topeka Seaman and Washburn Rural this season. The eighth-grade B-team also won their matchup by a score of 14-0 and are 3-0 on the season. 

The Junction City Middle School football teams will face Manhattan Eisenhower on Thursday night.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw two touchdown passes, including one to returning star Travis Kelce, and the Kansas City Chiefs overcame three early turnovers to beat Jacksonville 17-9 on Sunday for their third victory against the Jaguars in 10 months.

The Chiefs (1-1) won their eighth straight in the series and avoided becoming the first Super Bowl champions to start 0-2 since Denver in 1999.

The Jaguars (1-1), who insisted all week they owed the Chiefs because of a loss in the divisional round of the AFC playoffs in January, pretty much no-showed in their home opener.

Coach Doug Pederson’s team had another slow start, failed to capitalize on two of three turnovers and struggled to protect quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

Lawrence threw incomplete on a fourth-and-12 play with 4:16 remaining in an eight-point game, and Kansas City didn't let the Jaguars get the ball back.

Chiefs All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones, making his season debut after ending his holdout and signing a one-year contract, dominated his one-on-one matchups. Jones&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Chiefs/status/1703473144487444561">manhandled rookie right tackle Anton Harrison</a>&nbsp;and was equally effective against the rest of Jacksonville’s line. He finished with two sacks on five QB pressures.

With extra time to prepare following a loss to Detroit 10 days earlier in the NFL opener, the Chiefs had hoped to look a lot more like their normally dynamic selves on offense. But Richie James muffed a punt, Justin Watson fumbled and Mahomes threw an interception. Kadarius Toney, who dropped three passes in the opener, fumbled late in the third but was able to scoop up the loose ball and avoid another turnover.

Mahomes completed 29 of 41 passes for 305 yards. He&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Chiefs/status/1703481447833600419">found Kelce all alone in the end zone</a>&nbsp;to extend KC’s lead to 14-6. CBS play-by-play announcer Ian Eagle slipped in a song reference to reports linking Kelce to pop superstar Taylor Swift by saying “Kelce finds a blank space for the score.” One of Swift’s many hits is “Blank Space.”

Kelce, who missed the opener because of a hyperextended knee,&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Chiefs/status/1703482916917940720">punted the ball into the end zone to celebrate</a>. He finished with four catches on nine targets for 26 yards.

The Chiefs converted twice on fourth down and outgained Jacksonville 399 to 271 in total yards. The Jaguars had several chances but settled for field goals in two trips into the red zone, and they averaged a measly 4.2 yards per play.

Chiefs right tackle Jawaan Taylor, who spent the first four years of his NFL career with Jacksonville, had a rough homecoming. Taylor was penalized five times and ultimately benched for a series. He was flagged twice for false starts, once for an illegal formation and twice for holding.

Pederson fell to 0-4 against his close friend and mentor, Chiefs coach Andy Reid. This was Pederson's first loss at home; the previous three were played at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

The Chiefs beat Pederson and Philadelphia 27-20 in Week 2 of the 2017 season; the Eagles rebounded and ultimately won the Super Bowl. RENO, Nev. (AP) — Devin Neal and Daniel Hishaw Jr. combined for 137 rushing yards and four touchdowns, Jalon Daniels threw for 298 yards, and Kansas pulled away from Nevada in the fourth quarter for a 31-24 victory Saturday night.

The game was tied at 24-all when Daniels went 4-for-4 for 55 yards, leading to Neal’s third touchdown on a 3-yard run and a 31-24 lead with 6:20 left to play.

Nevada was not able to cross midfield on its final two possessions.

The Jayhawks (3-0) were a 28-point favorite at Nevada sports books.

The Wolf Pack (0-3) was looking to end the nation’s longest losing streak. The now 13-game skid is also the longest in program history.

Brendon Lewis led Nevada with 113 passing yards and two rushing touchdowns.

Neither team could muster much offense in the first half, but the second half was a shootout. They combined for 20 points on 247 yards in the first half but had 35 points on 461 yards in the second.

The teams used long pass plays to trade three touchdowns in a span of 2 minutes, 7 seconds late in the third quarter. Daniels connected with tight end Mason Fairchild on a 29-yard pass to the Nevada 1.

Two plays later, Nevada’s Dalevon Campbell hauled in a 53-yard pass from Lewis to set up a short TD run by Sean Dollars to tie it at 17-apiece.

On the next play, Daniels and Neal connected on a 59-yard pass to the Nevada 1, leading to Hishaw’s TD and a 24-17 lead that Kansas took into the fourth quarter.

The Jayhawks embarked on a nine-play, 75-yard touchdown drive on the game’s first possession, moving the ball with ease and scoring on a Neal 3-yard run. But the Wolf Pack defense stiffened – with the help of five Kansas penalties – and allowed just 75 yards on 23 plays the rest of the half.

Dollars scored on a 3-yard run in the final minute and the teams went into the locker room tied at 10-10 despite Nevada having just 97 total yards of offense.

The Jayhawks opened the season 3-0 for the second straight season. Kansas stretched it to 5-0 in 2022 before losing seven of its final eight games. This marks KU’s first back-to-back 3-0 starts since 1991-92 under head coach Glen Mason.

Kansas: Will host BYU (3-0) on Saturday in what will be the Cougars’ first Big 12 Conference game. BYU had been independent the previous 12 years before joining the Big 12 this season.

Nevada: Travels to San Marcos, Texas, to take on the Sun Belt’s Texas State Bobcats (2-1) on Saturday. Texas State is the last team Nevada defeated, 38-14, on Sept. 3, 2022, in Reno.

The Junction City Blue Jay football team will travel to McPherson for their week three matchup.&nbsp;

The Blue Jays are currently 1-1 on the season, after defeating the Dodge City Red Demons last Friday, 52-35. As for McPherson, the Bullpups are also 1-1. They lost in week one to Great Bend, but defeated Augusta last Friday, 57-10.&nbsp;

Junction City head football coach Randall Zimmerman had high praise for McPherson when previewing the matchup. "We've got our hands full with them," Zimmerman said. "They are a good, good football team. They felt like they let one slip away in week one against Great Bend, but they beat a good Augusta team last week."&nbsp;

High School Football week three matchups

The Lady Jay Tennis team traveled to Topeka on Wednesday and earned a runner up finish at the Topeka High Varsity Tennis Invite.  All singles and doubles entries finished in the top four places.  Eight schools participated in the tournament. 

 The Lady Jays were led by the #2 doubles team of Rebecca Monroe and Sarah Chang and #1 singles player, Hannah Micheel.  Both finished in 2nd place of their division, losing only in the championship matches.  Julia Cho competed in the #2 singles division and went 3-1 on the day to capture 3rd place, while Stephanie Stanislow and Ohemaa Sarpong went 2-2 to earn a 4th place finish. 

 The Lady Jays next travel to Olathe Northwest for a quadrangular on Thursday.  Matches will be held at the CBAC and begin at 3 pm.

Lady Jays tennis team places 2nd at Topeka High Varsity Invite

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs signed Chris Jones to a new one-year contract Monday, which should end the All-Pro defensive tackle's holdout and could mean he will be on the field when they visit the Jacksonville Jaguars for Week 2.

The Chiefs did not disclose terms, but a source told The Associated Press no years were added to his four-year, $80 million deal, that was due to expire. The person, speaking to AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the deal, said it instead includes incentives to substantially increase what Jones will make this season.

“Chris is an elite player in this league, and over the last seven years, he’s really developed into a leader on our team,” Chiefs general manager Manager Brett Veach said in a statement. “He’s been instrumental to our success and Super Bowl championship runs and it was a priority for us to keep him in a Chiefs uniform."

Veach praised Jones' representation, Jason and Michael Katz, for their work on the deal. The agents accompanied Jones to Kansas City last week and sat alongside him in a suite at Arrowhead Stadium to watch the Chiefs' season-opening loss to Detroit.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said hours before the deal was announced that there had been recent communication between the sides.

“Two things were obvious,” Veach said. "Chris wanted to be a Chiefs and the Katz brothers worked diligently on his behalf.”

Jones gave up a $500,000 workout bonus, was fined $50,000 each day for missing a mandatory minicamp and all of training camp, and forfeited nearly $1.1 million in his first game check for holding out through Week 1. It's unclear whether the provisions in his new deal will allow Jones to recoup the millions he already lost.

The statement from the Chiefs did not discuss what could happen next season. The club could still work out a long-term deal with Jones, along with placing the franchise tag on him and allowing him to leave in free agency.

The JC Jr Jays kicked off their 22nd season on Saturday hosting Council Grove at Blue Jay Stadium. All three Jr Jays teams picked up wins.&nbsp;

The fourth-grade team won by a score of 20-0, the fifth-grade team won 34-14, and the sixth-grade team won 24-0. &nbsp;

The Jr Jays are a community youth tackle football program that plays in the Flint Hills Youth Football League and is designed to develop players to advance to middle school and high school levels. &nbsp;

JC Jr Jays football teams kick off 22nd season 

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Will Howard passed for three touchdowns and ran for two others as No. 15 Kansas State defeated Troy 42-13 Saturday.

Howard threw touchdown passes of 9 yards to Jadon Jackson and 39 yards to Philip Brooks to help the Wildcats (2-0) to a 21-10 lead at the half, and his 2-yard run late in the third quarter made it an 18-point game.

K-State went over 40 points for the fourth straight regular-season game. The Wildcats also stopped Troy's 12-game winning streak, the second-longest in FBS coming into the game.

Howard finished 21 of 32 for 250 yards and had eight carries for 33 yards.

“It wasn't perfect, by any stretch,” Howard said. “We had some rough moments early in the second quarter. But we needed it. This was a game where we learned a lot. That was a really good team. They've got one of the tougher defenses I've ever gone against. They were hitting, and they did some really good things, schematically.

"I think that was a really good game for us to learn from. ”

K-State held the Trojans (1-1) to 286 total yards a week after they gained 540 against Stephen F. Austin.

Troy's Gunnar Watson was 17 of 32 for 167 yards with a touchdown and interception.

The Wildcats put the game out of reach with a nine-play, 76-yard drive capped by Howard's 1-yard shovel pass to Treshaun Ward for a 35-13 lead.

“That was a great win for our guys, a great win over a really good team,” K-State coach Chris Klieman said. “Their quarterback is a good player. We were going to shut down their run game. We gave them one big run where we missed a fit, but we did a really good job in the rush game."

K-State had a 21-10 halftime lead and put the clamps on the Troy offense in the third quarter. The Trojans' first three drives netted minus-1 yard.

“They had their way in the second quarter a little bit, so we had to make some adjustments," Klieman said. "I thought our guys adjusted well.”

Lewis made a dazzling one-handed catch in the end zone.Kansas State had a huge answer just before halftime when Howard found Brooks on a crossing pattern for the 39-yard touchdown with 10 seconds left. Brooks caught the ball around the 20 and raced up the sideline for the score and a 21-10 halftime lead.
