SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating the drowning of 2-year-old boy.

Just after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a home in the 1900 block of E. 54th Street South in Wichita for a drowning call, according to officer Paul Cruz.

Upon arrival, officers contacted the calling-party who reported observing the boy floating in the neighborhood pool and calling 911. 

Sedgwick County Emergency Medical Service (EMS) and the Wichita Fire Department (WFD) pulled the boy from the pool and attempted life-saving measures. However, the child died.&nbsp;

The investigation revealed the boy was with his 44-year-old father and 4-year-old brother in the neighborhood when he managed to by-pass the fence surrounding the pool, and fell into the water, according to Cruz.

Police released no additional details Wednesday afternoon.

Police: 2-year-old Kansas boy drowns in neighborhood pool

RAYMORE, Mo. (AP) — The driver of a stolen sport utility vehicle who led police in western Missouri on a chase died after crashing into another vehicle in Raymore, authorities said.

The crash happened Tuesday afternoon after Cass County Sheriff’s deputies tried to stop the SUV, which had been reported stolen out of Overland Park.

The driver refused to pull over and led law enforcement on a 20-mile chase until the SUV hit another vehicle on J Highway and rolled, the sheriff’s office said. The driver of the stolen SUV was ejected and died at the scene, according to investigators. The driver’s name had not been released by Wednesday morning.

Four people in the other vehicle suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital as a precaution, officials said.

Kyle Young was formally charged with capital murder, aggravated burglary, and criminal possession of a weapon by a felon, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office. He remains jailed on a total bond of over one million dollars, according to online jail records.

In the early morning of January 2, police responded to a shooting call at the Hotel at WaterWalk in the 700 block of South Main, in Wichita, according to officer Kevin Wheeler.

Upon arrival, officers located the bodies of 27-year-old George Kirksey and 22-year-old Alicia Roman with multiple gunshot wounds, according to officer Kevin Wheeler.

The investigation revealed that Kirksey and Roman were inside of the hotel room when a suspect identified as 33-year-old Young entered the room and fired multiple shots, striking them and then fleeing on foot.

Investigators learned of Young's involvement through their investigation and have been working to locate him. 

Authorities recently located him in Mexico and made an arrest, according to Wheeler.

On July 2, Young was transported back to Sedgwick County and booked into jail on requested charges of capital murder, aggravated burglary, criminal possession of a firearm and aggravated assault, according to Wheeler.

Kan. double-murder suspect captured in Mexico makes court appearance

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Wichita police officer who fatally shot an innocent man in 2017 while responding to a hoax emergency call stemming from a dispute between two online gamers is appealing a ruling allowing a lawsuit filed against him to move forward.

Attorneys for Justin Rapp filed a notice of appeal Monday to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, asking it to review a lower court order that refused to grant him protection from civil liability in Andrew Finch’s death.

The death of the 28-year-old drew national attention to “swatting,” a form of retaliation in which someone reports a false emergency to get authorities to descend on an address. The address the gamers used was old, leading police to Finch, who was not involved in the dispute or video game.

Rapp’s attorneys argued that the officer was entitled to qualified immunity.

But U.S. District Judge John W. Broomes wrote&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/020ee77af3c6e11a525e53540fdae42b">last month</a>&nbsp;that a “reasonable officer would have known that using deadly force when Finch displayed no weapon and made no overtly threatening movement was unlawful.”

The decision leaves it up to jurors in the civil case to decide whether Rapp’s actions were reasonable. Rapp is not charged criminally.

Kansas officer in deadly hoax shooting appeals ruling

An Ellis County Commission candidate is facing legal trouble after two arrests in recent weeks.

According to the Ellis County Attorney’s office, Lisa “L R” Boyd, D-Victoria, is accused of violating a restraining order on two occasions in June.

Boyd allegedly violated the restraining order for the first time on June 15 and then again on June 19. Following the second incident, Boyd was arrested. Ellis County Attorney Tom Drees said Boyd has been charged with two counts of violating a restraining order.

While out on bond, Boyd allegedly was involved in a third incident on July 4 that led to a second arrest in less than a month.

Drees said a second set of charges are expected to be filed against Boyd later this week.

The charges are expected to include two felonies — two counts of aggravated battery for reportedly firing a Roman candle firework at the alleged victims, including a teenager — and criminal threat. Boyd is also expected to face a misdemeanor charge of violating a restraining order.

Boyd made her first appearance in court in the most recent incident Tuesday and is currently being held in the Ellis County jail in lieu of bond.

Boyd is running as a Democrat for Ellis County Commissioner 3rd District. That seat is currently held by Republican Dean Haselhorst. The two will face off in the November primary election.

KDHE: Latest coronavirus numbers in Kansas

COWLEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal July 4 head-on crash that killed a Kansas teen have made an arrest.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2011 Chevy Traverse driven by&nbsp; &nbsp;Kaitlyn Michelle Keeling, 26, Belle Plaine, was westbound in the 11000 block of 82nd Road just before 10p.m. on Saturday.

The vehicle crossed the center line and struck a 1982 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Chase Edward Augur, 18,&nbsp; Augusta head-on, according to Cowley County Sheriff Dave Faletti.

Augur was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Miles Funeral Home.

The sheriff’s office conducted standard field sobriety tests on Keeling who was not injured in the crash, according to Faletti.

Deputies arrested her on a requested charge of Driving Under the Influence and she was transported to the Cowley County Jail.&nbsp;&nbsp;She posted a bond of $1,000.00 Saturday night same night and was released, according to Faletti.

The high court ruled 7-2 for the administration, which made a policy change to allow some employers who cite religious or moral objections to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/8c90eb432f73420786de1c05da872761">opt out of providing no-cost birth control required by the Obama-era healthcare law</a>. Lower courts had previously blocked the Trump administration’s changes.

“We hold today that the Departments had the statutory authority to craft that exemption, as well as the contemporaneously issued moral exemption. We further hold that the rules promulgating these exemptions are free from procedural defects,” Justice Clarence Thomas wrote for a majority of the court.

The high court on Wednesday said 7-2 the administration acted properly when it made the change, which lower courts had blocked.

The government had estimated that the rule changes would cause about 70,000 women, and at most 126,000 women, to lose contraception coverage in one year.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg cited those numbers in dissenting.

“In accommodating claims of religious freedom, this Court has taken a balanced approach, one that does not allow the religious beliefs of some to overwhelm the rights and interests of others who do not share those beliefs. Today, for the first time, the Court casts totally aside countervailing rights and interests in its zeal to secure religious rights to the nth degree,” she wrote.

Birth control has been a topic of contention since the law was passed. Initially, churches, synagogues and mosques were exempt from the contraceptive coverage requirement. The Obama administration also created a way by which religiously affiliated organizations including hospitals, universities and charities could opt out of paying for contraception, but women on their health plans would still get no-cost birth control. Some groups complained the opt-out process itself violated their religious beliefs.

That opt-out process was the subject of a 2016 Supreme Court case, but the court, with only eight justices at the time because of the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, didn’t decide the issue. It instead sent both sides back to see if they could work out a compromise.

Supreme Court: Some employers can refuse to offer free birth control

St. Joseph, Mo. —Missouri Western State University President Matt Wilson is leaving the university for what he calls his “dream job.”

According to a media release from the school, Wilson will leave his position at Missouri Western State University to become the next dean of <a href="https://news.temple.edu/announcements/2020-07-07/matthew-wilson-next-dean-temple-university-japan" target="_blank">Temple University Japan</a>.&nbsp;

“You hear people talking about dream jobs, but this is literally my greatest hope come true,” Wilson said. “My roots at Temple University run deep. Not only did I earn my Juris Doctor degree there, but I also spent part of my law school career as a student at Temple University Japan and worked there in various capacities for six years. Temple University Japan helped shape me, and I feel like I’m going home.”&nbsp;

TUJ, founded in 1982, is the oldest and largest foreign university in Japan. It serves more than 1300 undergraduate students from approximately 60 countries, and a total student population of approximately 3,000.

Wilson came to Missouri Western after serving two years as president of the University of Akron. Not only did I earn my Juris Doctor degree there, but I also spent part of my law school career as a student at Temple University Japan and worked there in various capacities for six years. Temple University Japan helped shape me, and I feel like I’m going home.”&nbsp;TUJ, founded in 1982, is the oldest and largest foreign university in Japan. Missouri Western president leaving for 'dream job' in Japan

Missouri leaders knew the risk of convening thousands of kids at summer camps across the state during a pandemic, the state's top health official said, and insisted that camp organizers have plans in place to keep an outbreak from happening.

An overnight summer camp in rural southwestern Missouri has seen scores of campers, counselors and staff infected with the coronavirus, the local health department revealed this week, raising questions about the ability to keep kids safe at what is a rite of childhood for many.

Missouri is one of several states to report outbreaks at summer camps. The Kanakuk camp near Branson ended up sending its teenage campers home. On Friday, the local health department announced 49 positive cases of the COVID-19 virus at the camp. By Monday, the number had jumped to 82.

Some states, like Oregon, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, closed summer camps this year, and many camps elsewhere have voluntarily canceled programs. But other camps are plowing ahead, hoping that precautions like social distancing, masks and requiring children to quarantine before coming to camp will quell the risk. Other states where outbreaks have been reported have included Texas, Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee.

Some 26 million youths normally take part in camps across the U.S. each year, the American Camp Association said Tuesday. The group estimates 19.5 million young people will miss out on in-person day and overnight camps this year due to the pandemic, with 6.5 million still expected to go.

Missouri's outbreak at a camp operated by Christian-based Kanakuk Kamp has done little to change the way that state is handling summer camps, which essentially calls for camp operators to consult with their local public health agency to craft plans to keep kids and staff safe. Camps must report any positive cases to the state.

Dr. Randall Williams, director of the Missouri Department of Health, said Monday that his agency had no plans to shut down summer camps in the wake of the Missouri outbreak.

“We think school is incredibly important to kids. We also think camps are important,” Williams said.

In fact, the camp plans to reopen later this summer once test results from all staffers are returned and show it's safe to do so, Williams said.

Phone and email messages left Tuesday by The Associated Press for Kanakuk Kamp were not immediately returned. The organization holds six overnight and day camps across the state, usually drawing more than 20,000 kids from across the country, according to its website.

In Texas, dozens of campers and staffers who attended Pine Cove’s Christian camps have tested positive, and several weeks of camp were canceled after clusters of cases were discovered. That includes at least 76 cases in June linked to its overnight camp for teens in Southeast Texas near Columbus. The Ridge camp shut down for two weeks in June before reopening last week, Pine Cove spokeswoman Susan Andreone said.

The organization's Silverado camp, also near Columbus, and two of its camps in East Texas also saw staff changes or interruptions after coronavirus cases. Despite that, Andreone said more than 8,500 people had been on their camp properties through last week, and most sessions haven’t been affected. Pine Cove has 10 overnight properties in Texas.

The spread came despite state requirements that include enforcing social distancing and banning outside visitors. As of last week, campers and staff must wear masks when social distancing isn't possible.

“Can we guarantee that someone is not going to get COVID? Absolutely not. But we also understand that parents really know their families best, they know what their particular circumstances are or any particular risks that they have within their family,” Andreone said.

Increases in reported cases around the country led Tara Carlson, of Omaha, Nebraska, to pull her 9-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter from their planned summer camps at the last minute.

“We lost over $300," Carson said, “but we feared the risk was too great."

Carlson said she was comfortable with efforts camps had taken against the virus, including mask requirements, limited group sizes and increased cleaning of communal areas. But she didn't want to risk picking up the virus because of regular visits with her parents, including her mom in hospice care.

“I didn't feel I could trust what other families were doing as far as social distancing," she said.

Summer camp virus outbreak raises safety questions

JACKSON COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges after a weekend arrest.

Just after 2p.m. Sunday, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office was notified of an alleged theft that occurred at the Holton Walmart, according to Sheriff Tim Morse. The report indicated that a suspect had taken some items from the store without paying. 

Witnesses gave deputies the description of the woman and the vehicle she was driving. A&nbsp;deputy stopped a vehicle matching the description near 126th Road on U.S. Highway 75. 

The suspect allegedly provided a false name to law enforcement. She was later identified as Tracy Lee Blevins, 48, of Topeka, according to Morse.

Deputies also located items believed to be stolen from Walmart inside the vehicle along with substances believed to be methamphetamine and marijuana. 

Blevins was also allegedly in possession of credit cards, checks, and social security cards that belonged to other individuals, according to Morse.

Blevins was booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, interference with law enforcement, identity theft, and theft.  Blevins also had outstanding warrants from other agencies.

Sheriff: Kansas felon allegedly gave fake name during traffic stop

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly issued an executive order on Tuesday that will require the state to track foster children’s progress in school, shortly after having vetoed a similar bill last month.

In an annual report card detailing the academic progress and classroom struggles of children in its care, Kelly’s order will require the state Department of Education to work with the Department for Children and Families to prepare the report and submit it by January 15 of each year to the education committees in both legislative chambers.

Kelly had initially vetoed the bill on June 1, saying the state couldn’t afford it.

“This executive order is another step my administration is taking to improve outcomes for vulnerable children in the foster care system,” Kelly said in a statement accompanying her order. “Education is key to a strong future workforce in Kansas. This report will help us track educational outcomes of Kansas students in foster care — which will in turn help Kansas’ vulnerable families, and make our public education system more accountable.”

The report card will contain graduation rates of Kansas foster kids, suspension rates and standardized test scores. Each category also will include race and ethnicity data.

Kelly’s order says that “as their legal custodian, the State of Kansas bears a heightened responsibility to make every effort to ensure Kansas students in foster care receive a quality education.”

Laura Howard, secretary for DCF, applauded Kelly and her order and said her agency is already working with the Department of Education to begin gathering data.

Kansas governor issues order on foster children's education

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas jail deputy for alleged sex crimes.

On Monday the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department arrested 30-year-old deputy Timothy Baskerville on requested charges that include 8 counts unlawful sexual relations with an inmate, according to Sgt. Tim Myers.

&nbsp;There are two victims in this case that are currently housed in the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility.&nbsp; The time frame of the alleged crime is from April 23 to June 1, according to Myers.

&nbsp; An inmate reported an incident to deputies on June 25.&nbsp; Baskerville was immediately placed on leave.&nbsp; During the course of the investigation it was discovered a second inmate had also been a victim of unwarranted advances.&nbsp; The specific allegations are kissing and fondling.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Baskerville, has been employed by the Sheriff’s Office for 17 months.

In addition to the criminal case, an investigation is also being conducted by the Professional Standards Unit of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.&nbsp;

The Kansas State Statute reads as follows:  KS 21-5512 (a)  “Unlawful sexual relations is engaging in consensual sexual intercourse, lewd fondling or toughing, or sodomy with a person who is not married to the offender if: (3) the offender is a law enforcement officer, an employee of a jail, or the employee of a contractor who is under contract to provide services in a jail and the person with whom the offender is engaging in consensual sexual intercourse, lewd fondling or touching, or sodomy is a person 16 years of age or older who is confined to such jail.”

Kansas jail deputy accused of sexual contact with inmates

TOPEKA— Governor Laura Kelly has announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved a Kansas plan for crisis counseling under the individual assistance category of the Stafford Act, according to a media release from the governor's office.

Funding is provided by FEMA’s Crisis Counseling Program Immediate Services Program (ISP). ISP is a program supported by a grant that provides disaster relief assistance offered through specially trained providers and other supports for up to 60 days after a major disaster declaration. Funding was secured through partnership with Kansas Division of Emergency Management, Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services and Kansas Department of Agriculture.

“Kansans have faced challenges and uncertainty since the beginning of this unprecedented health crisis," Kelly said. "We are developing a program with both virtual and person-to-person support offered with social distancing and preventing the spread of COVID-19 in mind. It is imperative to provide options for support during this time to let people know they are not alone, and help is available for those who need it.”

The first round of training was held on June 19 and 22 for providers to help support mental health initiatives designed to benefit Kansans affected by the pandemic. The initial Core Content Training is a two-day training developed by The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) that covers basic crisis counseling skills and services, data collection and stress management techniques. Over 40 individuals were trained during this session. This opportunity positions Kansas to address the complexities of COVID-19. Collaborating agencies are establishing an approach to provide outreach and services by telephone, virtually and through social media. The program will focus on providing crisis counseling and disaster recovery options, promoting the use or development of healthy coping strategies, connecting survivors with appropriate people and agencies that can assist them, and completing referrals to other disaster recovery programs or mental health providers.

"This funding allows us to implement a program that can also reach every corner of our state and is designed to link those in need to crisis counseling and community supports as well as other resources, strategies and comforts as we face this together."

Kansas will be requesting ongoing crisis counseling assistance from FEMA with a request to extend crisis counseling services to Kansans through the Crisis Counseling Program Regular Services Program. TOPEKA— Governor Laura Kelly has announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved a Kansas plan for crisis counseling under the individual assistance category of the Stafford Act, according to a media release from the governor's office.Funding is provided by FEMA’s Crisis Counseling Program Immediate Services Program (ISP). ISP is a program supported by a grant that provides disaster relief assistance offered through specially trained providers and other supports for up to 60 days after a major disaster declaration. Funding was secured through partnership with Kansas Division of Emergency Management, Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services and Kansas Department of Agriculture.“Kansans have faced challenges and uncertainty since the beginning of this unprecedented health crisis," Kelly said. "We are developing a program with both virtual and person-to-person support offered with social distancing and preventing the spread of COVID-19 in mind. It is imperative to provide options for support during this time to let people know they are not alone, and help is available for those who need it.”The first round of training was held on June 19 and 22 for providers to help support mental health initiatives designed to benefit Kansans affected by the pandemic. The initial Core Content Training is a two-day training developed by The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) that covers basic crisis counseling skills and services, data collection and stress management techniques. Over 40 individuals were trained during this session. This opportunity positions Kansas to address the complexities of COVID-19. Collaborating agencies are establishing an approach to provide outreach and services by telephone, virtually and through social media. Grant for mental health program benefits Kansans impacted by COVID-19  

International students will be forced to leave the U.S. or transfer to another college if their schools offer classes entirely online this fall, under new guidelines issued Monday by federal immigration authorities.

The guidelines, issued by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, provide additional pressure for universities to reopen even amid growing concerns about the recent spread of COVID-19 among young adults. Colleges received the guidance the same day that some institutions, including Harvard University, announced that all instruction will be offered remotely.

President Donald Trump has insisted that schools and colleges return to in-person instruction as soon as possible. Soon after the guidance was released, Trump repeated on Twitter that schools must reopen this fall, adding that Democrats want to keep schools closed “for political reasons, not for health reasons.”

“They think it will help them in November. Wrong, the people get it!” Trump wrote.

Under the updated rules, international students must take at least some of their classes in person. New visas will not be issued to students at schools or programs that are entirely online. And even at colleges offering a mix of in-person and online courses this fall, international students will be barred from taking all their classes online.

It creates an urgent dilemma for thousands of international students who became stranded in the U.S. last spring after the coronavirus forced their schools to move online. Those attending schools that are staying online must “depart the country or take other measures, such as transferring to a school with in-person instruction,” according to the guidance.

The American Council on Education, which represents university presidents, said the guidelines are “horrifying” and will result in confusion as schools look for ways to reopen safely.

Of particular concern is a stipulation saying students won’t be exempt from the rules even if an outbreak forces their schools online during the fall term. It’s unclear what would happen if a student ended up in that scenario but faced travel restrictions from their home country, said Terry Hartle, the council’s senior vice president.

“It’s going to cause enormous confusion and uncertainty,” Hartle said. “ICE is clearly creating an incentive for institutions to reopen, regardless of whether or not the circumstances of the pandemic warrant it.”

The international education group NAFSA blasted the rules and said schools should be given the authority to make decisions that are right for their own campuses. It said the guidance “is harmful to international students and puts their health and well-being and that of the entire higher education community at risk.”

Nearly 400,000 foreigners received student visas in the 12-month period that ended Sept. 30, down more than 40% from four years earlier. School administrations partly blame visa processing delay.

Colleges across the U.S. were already expecting sharp decreases in international enrollment this fall, but losing all international students could be disastrous for some. Many depend on tuition revenue from international students, who typically pay higher tuition rates. Last year, universities in the U.S. attracted nearly 1.1 million students from abroad.

Trump’s critics were quick to attack the new guidelines. Sen. Bernie Sanders, the Vermont independent, said the “cruelty of this White House knows no bounds.”

“Foreign students are being threatened with a choice: risk your life going to class in-person or get deported,” Sanders said in a tweet. “We must stand up to Trump’s bigotry. We must keep all our students safe.”

Dozens of colleges have said they plan to offer at least some classes in person this fall, but some say it’s too risky. The University of Southern California last week reversed course on a plan to bring students to campus, saying classes will be hosted primarily or exclusively online. Harvard on Monday said it will invite first-year students to live on campus, but classes will stay online.

Immigration authorities suspended certain requirements for international students early in the pandemic, but colleges were awaiting guidance on what would happen this fall. ICE notified schools of the changes Monday and said a formal rule would be forthcoming.

New rules: Foreign students must leave US if classes go online

COWLEY COUNTY —The Arkansas City Police Department is investigating an attempted kidnapping that occurred Monday, ending with the suspect stealing the victim’s vehicle to flee.

On Monday afternoon, police initially were dispatched Monday afternoon for a report of a disturbance in a vehicle northbound from the intersection of 15th Street and Radio Lane, in Arkansas City, according to police chief Daniel Ward.

At 4:38 p.m., Cowley County Emergency Communications received a call from a citizen who reported that a woman was injured and out of a vehicle in the area south of 252nd Road and 51st Road.

An officer arrived and learned a 27-year-old Arkansas City woman had been involved in the disturbance, after which a male suspect had fled in the woman’s vehicle.

The female victim was transported from the scene by the Arkansas City Fire-EMS Department to South Central Kansas Medical Center for further treatment.

Investigators later learned that the suspect — identified as Loengrys Castellanos Mesa, 35, of Grand Island, Nebraska — had entered the woman’s van unlawfully and hid until he reportedly attacked her.

The initial incident took place within the city limits of Arkansas City and then moved north, out of the city limits, where the woman was able to attempt to flee her attacker. 

She suffered injuries in the attempt, but was successful in reaching safety. Castellanos Mesa then allegedly fled the scene in her car.

Officers were able to identify the suspect quickly and placed notifications to other law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for the suspect and the victim’s vehicle, a silver Toyota Sienna minivan.

Cowley County District Court today issued an arrest warrant for Loengrys Castellanos Mesa on suspicion of aggravated battery, aggravated burglary of a motor vehicle, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated robbery, battery-domestic violence, criminal threat, stalking and theft. The bond set for the warrant is listed at $250,000.

“There is no immediate threat to the community. The suspect is known to the victim,” Capt. Eric Burr, of the Arkansas City Police Department, said of the incident. “We truly appreciate the citizens who rendered aid to the victim and reported the incident.

Topeka –The Shawnee County Health Department (SCHD) has identified additional COVID-19 cases linked to the Topeka Service Area on Interstate 70 Turnpike just East of Topeka, according to public information officer Craig Barnes.

 The exposure is specifically designated to the food court and restrooms of the facility. This facility food court&nbsp; includes Dunkin Donuts, Hardees, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut. The facility is accessible going east and westbound on the I-70 Turnpike.&nbsp; 

Shawnee County Health officials issued a similar alert in early May.

People who have traveled to food court or used the restrooms of this facility between July 2, 2020 and July 4, 2020 are recommended to contact their primary care provider&nbsp;IF&nbsp;they develop any of the following symptoms within 14 days from the date of their visit including fever of 100.4 F or higher, chills,&nbsp;rigors, myalgia (muscle pain or aches), malaise, headache, sore throat, lower respiratory illness (cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing), new olfactory and taste disorders,and diarrhea.

“It is important that the public be aware of this information in case they traveled and stopped at the Turnpike food court during their travels for the holiday weekend,” said Dr. Gianfranco Pezzino, Shawnee County Health Officer. 

“While the risk is most likely low for infection, it is not zero, and individuals should contact their healthcare provider if they begin to exhibit any symptoms related to COVID-19.”

As a reminder, human coronaviruses like the one that causes COVID-19 are most commonly spread through coughing and sneezing, personal contact like shaking hands, and touching a surface with the virus and then touching your eyes, nose or mouth. There are simple steps everyone can take to help prevent spreading them:
