SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a stolen vehicle was located on SE California Avenue in Topeka.

Just before 3p.m., December 27, deputies with the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a stolen black 2020 Chevrolet Trax from the 3000 block of SE Starlight Drive, according to Sheriff Brian Hill.

Shortly before 3:45 p.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 2400 block of SE California Avenue and one individual was taken into custody. Michael A. Woodworth, 46, was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Theft from motor vehicle; $25,000 &lt; $100,000;&nbsp;Possession of stolen property; $25,000 to $100,000 and&nbsp;Possession of an opiate, opium, narcotic or certain stimulant.

Woodworth has previous convictions for Interference with law enforcement by destroying evidence in a felony case and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

(AP) — President-elect&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;on Monday endorsed House Speaker&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/house-speaker-mike-johnson-majority-trump-election-65d7217e4541cd314849c9a0da2b0081">Mike Johnson</a>, providing crucial backing for the Louisiana Republican as he prepares for what is expected to be another contentious speakership race this week.

Trump said in a post on his social media platform that Johnson “is a good, hard working, religious man” and said he “will do the right thing, and we will continue to WIN.”

“Mike has my Complete &amp; Total Endorsement," he wrote.

Johnson thanked Trump for the endorsement and added, “The American people demand and deserve that we waste no time. Let’s get to work!”

The signal of support from Trump comes despite his frustration with a spending deal Johnson pushed through the House days before Christmas that failed to achieve his central goal of raising the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/debt-ceiling-shutdown-explainer-22ff94a8f8b188c722ff8fab3f7093d0">debt limit</a>.

But other Republicans have been less forgiving. Far-right criticism over the spending ordeal has left Johnson’s continued leadership of the incoming GOP majority once again in jeopardy. Though a deal was reached, averting a holiday shutdown, Johnson had to rely on Democrats to keep the government running, highlighting the limits of his influence and exposing cracks in his party’s support.

The speaker’s first two funding plans collapsed as Trump, who does not take the oath of office until Jan. 20, interceded with calls to suspend or lift the government debt ceiling.

Johnson, who has worked hard to stay close to Trump over the last several months, convinced the president-elect that he would meet his demands to raise the debt limit in 2025.

Trump had remained quiet about Johnson's fate before a Jan. 3 leadership vote for over a week, even as some Republicans signaled that they may not support Johnson for the role.

Rep.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/indiana-primary-election-victoria-spartz-ukraine-57fb403caa6a9bbe459639baacfdb7fa">Victoria Spartz</a>, one of the Republicans who opposed&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/kevin-mccarthy">Kevin McCarthy’s</a>&nbsp;initial bid for the speakership, said in a statement Monday that “our next speaker must show courageous leadership to get our country back on track.”

The Indiana lawmaker went on to make a series of demands for the next leader of the GOP majority, which included major spending reform. Rep. Andy Harris, who is the chair of the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus, had also indicated that Johnson's future as speaker is not guaranteed before the holidays.

In a Dec. 20 post on X, Harris said that Republicans have not done enough to bring down “spending, deficits and inflation" since Trump's electoral victory in November.

Because of this, Harris wrote, “I am now undecided on what House leadership should look like in the 119th Congress.”

SEDGWICK COUNTY — The Sedgwick County Zoo reported on Monday that they recently learned of a positive case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) or bird flu identified within Sedgwick County.

"While this strain doesn't pose a high risk to human health, it does put many Zoo animals at risk. To ensure their safety, we've activated our HPAI action plan."

 As a result, the Tropics building at the zoo will be temporarily closed and Penguin Encounters will be discontinued. 

"Our dedicated animal care staff is working tirelessly to provide the birds with the best care, following strict safety protocols." 

"We appreciate your understanding and support. We'll keep you updated regarding the reopening and the resumption of our Penguin Encounters."&nbsp;

Bird flu prompts temporary closures at Kansas zoo 

President Joe Biden has scheduled a state funeral in Washington for former President Jimmy Carter on Jan. 9.

Biden also declared Jan. 9 as a National Day of Mourning across the U.S. Carter, the longest-lived former president, died Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia. He was 100.

Biden also ordered U.S. flags to fly at half-staff for 30 days from Sunday.

Most federal employees will have Jan. 9 off in observance of Jimmy Carter

SEDGWICK COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 11:30a.m. Sunday in Wichita.

A mini-bike driven by 25-year-old Kevin Wilson of Wichita was eastbound on East Gilbert Avenue and did not stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Edgemoor Avenue, according to Wichita Police Officer Juan Rebolledo.

The mini bike collided with the front driver's side of a transport van driven by a 65-year-old Wichita resident. First responders found Wilson unresponsive and not breathing, according to Rebolledo.&nbsp; Officers administered life-saving measures until EMS arrived and pronounced him deceased at the scene.

&nbsp;The driver of the van remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

Preliminary findings indicate that speed is suspected to be a contributing factor in the crash. This incident remains under active investigation, according to Rebolledo.

Police: Speed a factor in fatal Kansas mini-bike, van crash

TOPEKA — On Jan. 1, 2025, Kansans will no longer pay state sales tax on groceries. They will still pay city- and county-imposed taxes, but the current state tax of 2% will be reduced to zero.&nbsp;

A&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2022/05/11/kelly-goes-shopping-for-sweet-food-sales-tax-repeal-settles-for-gradual-reduction/">2022 law</a>&nbsp;set out a three-year plan to reduce the state’s sales tax on groceries, which was at 6.5% in 2022. In 2023, it was reduced to 4%, and in 2024 to 2%. When the bill was introduced, Kansas had one of the highest food sales taxes, second to Mississippi with 7%.&nbsp;

City and county grocery taxes will still be added. They range from 0%, in 11 counties, to a high of 2.25% in Sherman County. Most counties have between 0.01% to 2% grocery taxes. Twelve counties have a grocery tax higher than 2%. The average monthly household cost for groceries is about $500 per month, so it’s estimated that the average Sherman County household would pay about $11 per month on grocery tax. In 2022, they would have paid around $34 per month.&nbsp;

Nancy Hamilton, a health psychologist, says the burden of the food sales tax — and other regressive taxes — fall the heaviest on low-income communities.&nbsp;

“Eliminating sales tax on food should have a greater benefit for those with the least because they spend the greatest proportion of their income on necessities like food,” Hamilton said.&nbsp;

The Kansas Health Institute found that not only did the tax harm low-income Kansans financially, but also in terms of health.&nbsp;

“Taxes are a financial driver within the overall food system that impact household purchasing power and behavior, community health and nutrition,” they said.&nbsp;

The 2022 law was passed with bipartisan support, unanimously in the Senate and with an overwhelming majority in the House. Gov. Laura Kelly said that the tax cut is a “win for the Kansas people,” after hearing Kansans’ concerns with inflation on food.&nbsp;

When the law was passed, food prices had&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ers.usda.gov/data-products/food-price-outlook/summary-findings/" target="_blank">increased by 9.9%</a>. In 2023,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ers.usda.gov/data-products/food-price-outlook/summary-findings/" target="_blank">they increased by 5.8%</a>.&nbsp;

SALINE COUNTY —Police are investigating a violent attack involving a machete and have made an arrest.

The altercation occurred between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. December 27 following a heated dispute the previous evening, according to Salina Police Captain David Villanueva.

According to the police report, Masaniai allegedly struck the victim in the face with a machete, creating a vertical laceration extending from the victim’s eye to his nose. Villanueva described the injury as severe, noting that it exposed facial substructures beneath the skin. The victim was treated for his injuries at Salina Regional Health Center. Police did not have an update on his condition Monday.

A police search of Masaniai’s residence uncovered a machete, described by investigators as a two-and-a-half to three-foot-long bush blade with blood on it. Additional evidence was also recovered from the suspect’s vehicle.

Police found Masaniai at a motel on South Broadway in Salina and arrested him on requested charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery and criminal threat.&nbsp;<br>Villanueva said that the prior verbal threats, combined with the attack, led to the attempted first-degree murder charge.

Police did not release any additional information on the relationship between Masaniai and victim or the number of individuals present during the initial altercation on Friday.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued a written opinion upholding the $5 million award that the Manhattan jury granted to E. Jean Carroll for defamation and sexual abuse.

The longtime magazine columnist had testified at a 2023 trial that Trump turned a friendly encounter in spring 1996 into a violent attack after they playfully entered the store’s dressing room.

Trump skipped the trial after repeatedly denying the attack ever happened. But he briefly testified at a follow-up defamation trial earlier this year that resulted in an $83.3 million award. The second trial resulted from comments then-President Trump made in 2019 after Carroll first made the accusations publicly in a memoir.

In its ruling, a three-judge panel of the appeals court rejected claims by Trump's lawyers that trial Judge Lewis A. Kaplan had made multiple decisions that spoiled the trial, including by permitting two other women who had accused Trump of sexually abusing them to testify.

The judge also had allowed the jury to view the infamous “Access Hollywood” tape in which Trump boasted in 2005 about grabbing women’s genitals because when someone is a star, “you can do anything.”

“We conclude that Mr. Trump has not demonstrated that the district court erred in any of the challenged rulings," the 2nd Circuit said. “Further, he has not carried his burden to show that any claimed error or combination of claimed errors affected his substantial rights as required to warrant a new trial.”

In September, both Carroll, 81, and Trump, 78, attended oral arguments by the 2nd Circuit.

Steven Cheung, a Trump spokesperson, said in a statement that Trump was elected by voters who delivered "an overwhelming mandate, and they demand an immediate end to the political weaponization of our justice system and a swift dismissal of all of the Witch Hunts, including the Democrat-funded Carroll Hoax, which will continue to be appealed.”

Roberta Kaplan, a lawyer who represented Carroll during the trial and is not related to the judge, said in a statement: “Both E. Jean Carroll and I are gratified by today’s decision. We thank the Second Circuit for its careful consideration of the parties’ arguments.”

The first jury found in May 2023 that Trump sexually abused Carroll and defamed her with comments he made in October 2022. That jury&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-rape-carroll-trial-fe68259a4b98bb3947d42af9ec83d7db">awarded Carroll $5 million</a>.

In January, a second jury&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-carroll-defamation-trial-e4ea8b93cdeb29857864ffd8d14be888">awarded Carroll an additional $83.3 million</a>&nbsp;in damages for comments Trump had made about her while he was president, finding that they were defamatory. That jury had been instructed by the judge to accept the first jury’s finding that Trump had sexually abused Carroll. The appeal of that verdict has not yet been heard.

Carroll testified during both trials that her life as an Elle magazine columnist was spoiled by Trump’s public comments, which she said motivated some people to send her death threats and leave her fearful to leave the upstate New York cabin where she lives.

Trump testified for under three minutes at the second trial and was not permitted to challenge conclusions reached by the May 2023 jury. Still, he was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-carroll-defamation-lawsuit-70d4477120399373934253c7e450643e">animated in the courtroom</a>&nbsp;throughout the two-week trial, and jurors could hear him grumbling about the case.

During appeals arguments in September, Trump lawyer D. John Sauer said testimony from witnesses who recalled Carroll telling them about the 1996 encounter with Trump immediately afterward was improper because the witnesses had “egregious bias” against Trump.

And the attorney said the judge also should have excluded the testimony of the two women who said Trump committed similar acts of sex abuse against them in the 1970s and in 2005. Trump has denied those allegations too.

The 2nd Circuit wrote: “In each of the three encounters, Mr. Trump engaged in an ordinary conversation with a woman he barely knew, then abruptly lunged at her in a semi-public place and proceeded to kiss and forcefully touch her without her consent. The acts are sufficiently similar to show a pattern.”

It said the “Access Hollywood” tape was “directly corroborative” of the testimony by the women of the pattern of behavior they experienced.

The Associated Press does not identify people who say they have been sexually assaulted unless they come forward publicly, as Carroll has done.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —A Kansas felon is recovering from injuries after a crash during a&nbsp; police chase in Shawnee County.

Just after 9p.m. December 27, the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center received notification of a theft at a business in the 2600 block of NW Rochester Road, according to Sheriff Brian Hill.&nbsp;

A deputy located the suspect's red Chevrolet Blazer northbound in the 4000 Block NW Rochester Road in Topeka.

The deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle near NW 46th Street and NW Topeka Boulevard, but the driver refused to stop, initiating a pursuit. 

The driver, later identified as 52-year-old Clifford H. Swarthout, Jr.,&nbsp; continued southbound on NW Topeka Boulevard and then westbound on NW 39th Street. The driver failed to negotiate the T-intersection at NW Button Road and left the roadway. 

The vehicle came to rest in the trees on it’s side. Both occupants were extricated from the vehicle and taken to a local hospital by American Medical Response (AMR) with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Topeka Police Department handled the female passenger in regards to the initial theft. The male driver, Clifford H. Swarthout Jr., 52, of Topeka, was taken into custody and once released from the hospital will be booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on the following requested charges&nbsp;Aggravated battery;&nbsp;Flee or attempt to elude law enforcement and&nbsp;Driving while license suspended.

Swarthout has numerous previous felony convictions that include forgery, theft, burglary and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement investigating a weekend homicide in Kansas have identified the victim as 18-year-old&nbsp;Zamauria Jones, according to KCPD Officer Alayna Gonzalez.

Just after 10p.m. Saturday, police were dispatched to the 7600 block of Monroe Avenue on a reported sound of shots call for service. While officers were on the way to the call, they were flagged down by an individual who stated she was transporting a shooting victim, later identified as Jones, to the hospital and needed help.

Officers immediately removed Jones from the vehicle. She was unresponsive and suffering from apparent gunshot trauma. 

Medical aid was provided for Jones by officers on scene until emergency medical personnel responded. Jones was immediately transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced deceased.

Police have not reported information indicating what lead up to the shooting. Police are working to gather information on anyone who may be responsible for this incident.

WASHINGTON (AP)—Former President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jimmy-carter-dies-18c198c20352c835bca3eec276020dd7">Jimmy Carter has died</a>&nbsp;at the age of 100. The 39th president of the United States was a Georgia peanut farmer who sought to restore trust in government when he assumed the presidency in 1977 and then built a reputation for tireless work as a humanitarian. He earned a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

At age 52, Carter was sworn in as president on Jan. 20, 1977, after defeating President Gerald R. Ford in the 1976 general election. Carter left office on Jan. 20, 1981, following his 1980 general election loss to Ronald Reagan.&nbsp;

Guterres' remembrance focuses on Carter's contributions to peace

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Sunday praised Carter for his significant contributions to international peace through the Camp David Accords, the SALT II Treaty and the Panama Canal treaties.

“President Carter’s commitment to international peace and human rights also found full expression after he left the presidency,” Guterres said in a statement. "He played a key role in conflict mediation, election monitoring, the promotion of democracy, and disease prevention and eradication. These and other efforts earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 and helped advance the work of the United Nations.

“President Carter will be remembered for his solidarity with the vulnerable, his abiding grace, and his unrelenting faith in the common good and our common humanity,” Guterres said.

King Charles III joined leaders from around the world in issuing their condolences and sharing their reflections on the former president.

“It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of former President Carter," the king said in a public statement. “He was a committed public servant, and devoted his life to promoting peace and human rights. His dedication and humility served as an inspiration to many, and I remember with great fondness his visit to the United Kingdom in 1977."

President Joe Biden broke from his family vacation in the U.S. Virgin Islands to remember Carter, recalling his predecessor as a role model and friend.

America and the world lost a “remarkable leader” with Carter’s death, Biden said, adding that he had spoken to several of the former president's children and was working with them to formalize memorial arrangements in Washington. Speaking for roughly 10 minutes, Biden remembered Carter as a humanitarian and statesman, someone he couldn't imagine walking past a person in need without trying to help them. He represented “the most fundamental human values we can never let slip away,” Biden said.

The president repeatedly praised Carter's “simple decency” and his values, saying some will see him as a man of honesty and humility from a bygone era.

“I don’t believe it’s a bygone era. I see a man not only of our time, but for all times,” Biden said. “To know his core, you need to know he never stopped being a Sunday school teacher at that Baptist church in Plains, Georgia.”

Egyptian president notes historic Camp David Accords

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi said on X that Carter's significant role in achieving the peace agreement between Egypt and Israel "will remain etched in the annals of history.”

He went on to say Carter's “humanitarian work exemplifies a lofty standard of love, peace, and brotherhood.” Carter will be remembered as “one of the world’s most prominent leaders in service to humanity,” el-Sissi said.

Carter’s relationship with his wife Rosalynn spanned a near-lifetime

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter had one of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rosalynn-carter-dead-69fadff26354d26bdda94c5d52558a7f">great love stories</a>&nbsp;and political partnerships in U.S. presidential history.

The former president sometimes called his wife, who died Nov. 19. 2023, “Rosie,” which is a good way to remember how her name actually is pronounced. It is “ROSE-uh-lyn,” not, repeat NOT, “RAHZ-uh-lyn.”

They were married more than 77 years but their relationship went back even further. Jimmy’s mother, “Miss Lillian,” delivered Eleanor Rosalynn Smith at the Smith home in Plains on Aug. 18, 1927. The nurse brought her eldest child back a few days later to visit, meaning the longest-married presidential couple met as preschooler and newborn.

She became his trusted campaign aide and White House adviser, surprising Washington by sitting in on Cabinet meetings. Then they traveled the world together as co-founders of The Carter Center.

Most of the nation saw the former president for the last time at Rosalynn Carter’s funeral.

Grandson Jason Carter says Plains kept his grandparents humble

Jason Carter is now the chairman of The Carter Center’s board of governors. He said his grandparents “never changed who they were” even after reaching the White House and becoming global humanitarians.

He says their four years in Washington were just one period of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jimmy-carter-life-career-timeline-38b962a71cb8c05e1f7dba3b0873ebc7">putting their values into action</a>&nbsp;and that the center his grandparents founded in Atlanta is a lasting “extension of their belief in human rights as a fundamental global force.”

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter traveled the world advocating for democracy and fighting disease, but Jason Carter said they weren’t motivated by pity, or arrogance that a former American president had all the answers — they ventured to remote places because they could “recognize these people.” They too were from “a 600-person village” and understood that even the poorest people “have the power ... the ability ... the knowledge and the expertise to change their own community.”

As reaction poured in from around the world, President Joe Biden mourned Carter’s death, saying the world lost an “extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian” and he lost a dear friend. Biden cited Carter’s compassion and moral clarity, his work to eradicate disease, forge peace, advance civil and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless and advocacy for the disadvantaged as an example for others.

Biden said he is ordering a state funeral for Carter in Washington.

Pelosi says Carter’s life ‘was saintly’ in devotion to peace

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is remembering Carter as a man steeped “in devotion to public service and peace.”

The California Democrat said in a statement Sunday that Carter was committed to “honoring the spark of divinity within every person,” something she said manifested in “teaching Sunday school in his beloved Marantha Baptist Church, brokering the landmark Camp David Accords to pave the way to peace or building homes with Habitat for Humanity.”

Pelosi also said Carter led “perhaps the most impactful post-presidency in history.”

Historical praise from the United Kingdom

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer noted in a post on X the special contribution Carter made by brokering the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt and through his work with the Carter Center.

“Motivated by his strong faith and values, President Carter redefined the post-presidency with a remarkable commitment to social justice and human rights at home and abroad,” Starmer said.

To commemorate Carter’s death, officials with the Empire State Building said in a post on social media that the iconic New York City landmark would be lit in red, white and blue on Sunday night, “to honor the life and legacy” of the late former president.

Guided by his faith, President Carter lived to serve others — until the very end."</p><p>The statement recalled Carter's many achievements and priorities, including efforts “to protect our natural resources in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, make energy conservation a national priority, return the Panama Canal to Panama, and secure peace between Egypt and Israel at Camp David."</p><p>After he left office, the Clinton statement said, Carter continued efforts in "supporting honest elections, advancing peace, combating disease, and promoting democracy; to his and Rosalynn’s devotion and hard work at Habitat for Humanity — he worked tirelessly for a better, fairer world,” the statement said.</p>

A Harley Davidson Tri Glide motorcycle was traveling eastbound and entered a private drive in the area of 500 block of NW Barry Road in Kansas City, according to KCPD Officer Alayna Gonzalez

The motorcycle entered the driveway too quickly, at too sharp of a turn and overturned.&nbsp; The vehicle rolled on top of the operator causing critical injuries. EMS transported the motorcycle operator to a local hospital where hospital staff pronounced them deceased.

This is fatality #94 compared to #101 at this time last year, according to Gonzalez.&nbsp; The name of the victim has not been released.

ATLANTA (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/jimmy-carter">Jimmy Carter,</a>&nbsp;the peanut farmer who tried to restore virtue to the White House after the Watergate scandal and Vietnam War, then rebounded from a landslide defeat to become a global advocate of human rights and democracy, has died.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jimmy-carter-100th-birthday-1e540c277dea07bd84242d290b4ebcdc">He was 100 years old</a>.

The Carter Center said the 39th president died Sunday afternoon,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jimmy-carter-roslaynn-hospice-year-anniversary-c93498575e806f1a1d83714cf8e5c0b6">more than a year after entering hospice care</a>, at his home in Plains, Georgia, where he and his wife,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/rosalynn-carter">Rosalynn,</a>&nbsp;who died in November 2023, lived most of their lives. The center said he died peacefully, surrounded by his family.

“To all of the young people in this nation and for anyone in search of what it means to live a life of purpose and meaning – the good life – study Jimmy Carter, a man of principle, faith, and humility,” Biden said in a statement. “He showed that we are a great nation because we are a good people – decent and honorable, courageous and compassionate, humble and strong.”

A moderate Democrat,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-politics-united-states-government-georgia-state-barack-obama-794d225a2a4de24e4545bbca60095bc1">Carter ran for president in 1976</a>&nbsp;as a little-known Georgia governor with a broad grin, effusive Baptist faith and technocratic plans for efficient government. His promise to never deceive the American people resonated after Richard Nixon’s disgrace and U.S. defeat in southeast Asia.

“If I ever lie to you, if I ever make a misleading statement, don’t vote for me. I would not deserve to be your president,” Carter said.

Carter’s victory over Republican Gerald Ford, whose fortunes fell after pardoning Nixon, came amid Cold War pressures, turbulent oil markets and social upheaval over race, women’s rights and America’s role in the world. His achievements included brokering Mideast peace by keeping Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin at Camp David for 13 days in 1978.

But his coalition splintered under double-digit inflation and the 444-day hostage crisis in Iran. His negotiations ultimately brought all the hostages home alive, but in a final insult, Iran didn’t release them until the inauguration of Ronald Reagan, who had trounced him in the 1980 election.

Humbled and back home in Georgia, Carter said his faith demanded that he keep doing whatever he could, for as long as he could, to try to make a difference. He and Rosalynn co-founded&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ga-state-wire-jimmy-carter-rosalynn-carter-us-news-d72c1e75aa626d41565117c88952a5fb">The Carter Center</a>&nbsp;in 1982 and spent the next 40 years traveling the world as peacemakers, human rights advocates and champions of democracy and public health.

Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, Carter helped ease nuclear tensions in North and South Korea, avert a U.S. invasion of Haiti and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/6a4d9b86ab5bdbc3d4ffdeb736006967">negotiate cease-fires in Bosnia</a>&nbsp;and Sudan. By 2022, the center had monitored at least 113 elections around the world. The common observation that he was better as an ex-president rankled Carter. His allies were pleased that he lived long enough to see biographers and historians&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lifestyle-middle-east-jimmy-carter-18eab7024282910f6aab29026a1e04e2">revisit his presidency</a>&nbsp;and declare it more impactful than many understood at the time.

Propelled in 1976 by voters in Iowa and then across the South, Carter ran a no-frills campaign. Americans were captivated by the earnest engineer, and while an election-year Playboy interview drew snickers when he said he “had looked on many women with lust. I’ve committed adultery in my heart many times,” voters tired of political cynicism found it endearing.

The first family set an informal tone in the White House, carrying their own luggage, trying to silence the Marine Band’s traditional “Hail to the Chief" and enrolling daughter, Amy, in public schools. Carter was lampooned for wearing a cardigan and urging Americans to turn down their thermostats.
