ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect after a weekend chase across state lines.

Just before 5 a.m. Saturday, officers attempted to stop a pickup truck pulling a trailer in the area of 10th and U.S.59, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.&nbsp; Police were following a tip&nbsp;that the truck was stolen. 

The vehicle fled westbound on U.S.59 and subsequently into the Branchton area and then back to U.S.59 where it went eastbound and into Missouri. 

At that point an Atchison County sheriff's deputy pursued the vehicle into Missouri. The vehicle continued to flee but returned eastbound and was on the Amelia Earhart bridge when he saw APD patrol cars on the west side of the bridge and turned around on the bridge and was again eastbound on U.S.59. 

A police officer on the east end of the bridge deployed stop sticks and while doing so the stop stick cord, which the officer was holding, made contact with the fleeing vehicle and trailer and injured the officer's hand. 

&nbsp;The officer was treated for that injury at an area hospital and released, according to Wilson.

The Atchison County Sheriff's deputy continued to pursue the vehicle into Platte County where the vehicle was stopped by Platte County deputies and took the driver identified as 29-year-old Michael Diblasi0, according to online jail records,&nbsp; into custody. He remains jailed without bond.

There was a motorcycle on that trailer that had been stolen from the 200 block North 9th Street in Atchison, according to Wilson.

Police warn of fake stories on facebook upsetting the community

KANSAS CITY (AP) —The Supreme Court’s decision to end the nation’s constitutional protections for abortion has catapulted businesses of all types into the most divisive corner of politics.

Some companies that stayed silent last month — when a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-abortion-draft-opinion-07439f9fc4542f1500ab78dfd34036b1">draft opinion by Justice Samuel Alito was leaked to Politico</a>&nbsp;— spoke up for the first time Friday, including The Walt Disney Company, which said it will reimburse employees who must travel out of state to get an abortion.

Facebook parent Meta, American Express, Bank of America and Goldman Sachs also said they would cover employee travel costs while others like Apple, Starbucks, Lyft and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-covid-technology-politics-health-f948ba6b05102ed11273a003b0d20de6">Yelp</a>&nbsp;reiterated&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/voting-rights-abortion-us-supreme-court-health-business-52cbf7dd6ec4391c8e3be766bc7c6f66">previous announcements</a>&nbsp;taking similar action. Outdoor clothing maker Patagonia went so far as to post on LinkedIn Friday that it would provide “training and bail for those who peacefully protest for reproductive justice” and time off to vote.

But of the dozens of big businesses that The Associated Press reached out to Friday, many like McDonald’s, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, General Motors, Tyson and Marriott did not respond. Arkansas-based Walmart — the nation’s largest employer with a good portion of its stores in states that will immediately trigger abortion bans following the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-supreme-court-decision-854f60302f21c2c35129e58cf8d8a7b0">Friday’s Supreme Court ruling</a>&nbsp;— also kept quiet.

Meanwhile, the Business Roundtable, an organization that represents some of the nation’s most powerful companies, said it “does not have a position on the merits of the case.”

A lot is at stake for companies, many of which have publicly pledged to promote women’s equality and advancement in the workplace. For those in states with restrictive abortion laws, they could now face big challenges in attracting college-educated workers who can easily move around.

Luis von Ahn, the CEO of the language app Duolingo, sent a tweet Friday aimed at lawmakers in Pennsylvania, where the company is headquartered: “If PA makes abortion illegal, we won’t be able to attract talent and we’ll have to grow our offices elsewhere.”

The ruling and the coming patchwork of abortion bans also threatens the technology boom in places like Austin, Texas as companies like Dell -- which was already becoming more flexible to remote work because of the tight labor market -- struggle to recruit newly minted tech graduates to their corporate hubs, said Steven Pedigo, a professor who studies economic development at the University of Texas at Austin.

“Rather than stay in Austin, do you go to New York or Seattle or the Bay Area? I think that’s a real possibility,” Pedigo said. “It becomes much more challenging, particularly when you’re looking at a young, progressive workforce, which is what technology workers tend to be.”

Emily M. Dickens, chief of staff and head of government affairs for the Society for Human Resource Management, said in a statement that nearly a quarter of organizations in a recent poll agreed that offering a health savings account to cover travel for reproductive care in another state will enhance their ability to compete for talent.

“But how these policies interact with state laws is unclear, and employers should be aware of the legal risks involved,” she said.

Dickens noted that companies that use third-party administrator to process claims on their behalf — typically big employers — are subject to the Employee Retirement Income Security Act rather than state law. But companies that have to buy their own health insurance for their employees — typically small businesses — are subject to state regulations and have less flexibility in designing benefits.

Offering to cover travel expenses could also make companies a target for anti-abortion lawmakers. In March, Texas State Representative Briscoe Cain, a Republican, sent a cease-and-desist letter to Citigroup, saying he would propose legislation barring localities in the state from doing business with any company that provides travel benefits for employees seeking abortions.

In his concurring opinion released Friday, Justice Brett Kavanaugh suggested it would be unconstitutional for a state to bar residents from traveling to another state to get an abortion.

“In my view, the answer is no based on the constitutional right to interstate travel,” Kavanaugh wrote.

But a corporation’s right to fund what would be an illegal act in another state is still questionable, argues Teresa Collett, a law professor at the University of St. Thomas.

“That’s not an interstate commerce question, per se,” she said. “So you’d need the right plaintiff.”

Meanwhile, tech companies are facing tough questions about what they’ll do if some of their millions of customers in the U.S. are prosecuted for having an abortion. Services like Apple, Google, Facebook and Microsoft routinely hand over digital data sought by law enforcement agencies pursuing criminal investigations. That’s raised concerns from privacy advocates about&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-technology-health-government-and-politics-f372714bd13846d62e2ac8c5d8e233d5">enforcers of abortion laws tapping into period apps</a>, phone location data and other sensitive online health information.

A letter Friday from four Democrats in Congress&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-technology-data-privacy-mobile-phones-30999c52b3144490c7c97d89f9a6451d">called on the Federal Trade Commission</a>&nbsp;to investigate the phone-tracking practices of Google and Apple, warning that location identifiers used for advertising could fall into the hands of prosecutors or bounty hunters looking “to hunt down women who have obtained or are seeking an abortion.”

The Supreme Court ruling comes at a time when companies have become increasingly reliant on women to fill jobs, and especially as they face a nationwide labor shortage. Women now account for nearly 50% of the U.S. workforce, up dramatically from 37.5% in 1970 — three years before the Supreme Court ruled abortions to be legal in Roe vs. Wade — according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Denied access to abortion could hit low-income workers the hardest because they’re typically in jobs with fewer protections and that are also demanding, from loading groceries onto store shelves to working as a health aide.

“As a direct result of this ruling, more women will be forced to choose between paying their rent or traveling long distances to receive safe abortion care,” said Mary Kay Henry, international president of the Service Employees International Union, which represents nearly 2 million janitors, health care workers and teachers in the U.S. “Working women are already struggling in poverty-wage jobs without paid leave and many are also shouldering the caregiving responsibilities for their families, typically unpaid.”

Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants told The Associated Press that the ruling was “devastating.”

“It cuts to the core of all the work that our union has done for 75 years,” she said. “This decision is not about whether or not someone supports abortion. That’s the distraction ... This is about whether or not we respect the rights of women to determine their own future.”

Maurice Schweitzer, a professor at University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, said the handful of companies are taking a stand on the court’s ruling because their customers and employees are expecting them to speak out.

“We’re in this moment in time where we’re expecting corporate leaders to also be leaders in the political sphere,” he said. “A lot of employees expect to work in companies that not only pay them well, but whose values are aligned with theirs.”

But the vast majority of executives will likely avoid the thorny topic and focus on things like inflation or supply chain disruptions, he said.

“They can either support travel for out-of-state care and risk lawsuits and the ire of local politicians, or they can not include this coverage and risk the ire of employees,” Schweitzer said.

SALINA —As a result of a pilot shortage having an acute impact on the regional airline industry, SkyWest Airlines, Inc. operator of United Express service at the Salina Regional Airport filed a notice to terminate their service at 29 regional airports across the country. Salina Regional Airport was part of this original filing on March 10, 2022.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On Friday, SkyWest Airlines, Inc. filed a Withdrawal of Termination Notice for Salina with the U.S. Department of Transportation, according to a statement from the air carrier.

 The withdrawal ends weeks of uncertainty concerning the continuation of United Express flights operated by SkyWest Airlines at the Salina Regional Airport.

Salina passengers can be reassured that United Express flights to Denver and Chicago will continue without interruption. Monthly and weekly passenger enplanements at the Salina Airport continue to set new record highs when compared to prior years.

Record passenger enplanements are a result of SkyWest’s partnership with United Airlines and Salina community leaders. SkyWest and United have demonstrated their ability to grow the Salina market and connect Salina to national and international destinations. SkyWest withdraws service termination notice for Salina

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Nationwide farmers are having issues buying new farm equipment, which is also making it difficult to buy used farm equipment. &nbsp;

Greg
 Peterson, better known as Machinery Pete, says there are a couple 
different factors that are causing the rise in the price of used farm 
equipment. &nbsp;

"One, is that farm income is up," Peterson 
tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "Commodity prices went up in the fall of 
2020 and have been pushing to very high levels so, that's number one."&nbsp;

And number two is the current trend of high prices on new farm equipment&nbsp;

"Supply
 chain issues are actually getting worse so manufacturers like John 
Deere or Case IH, they can't make enough," Peterson explains. "Farmers 
want to buy new to update their equipment line."&nbsp;

Peterson says 
though those manufacturers can't produce enough equipment to keep up 
with the demand.&nbsp; For example, if you were looking for a new planter 
earlier this spring, all of those were pre ordered last fall. &nbsp;

Peterson says the problem is nationwide and so far, is showing no signs of letting up anytime soon&nbsp;

"Things
 are always subject to change but I don't see any tea leaves right now 
that would point to a cooling off, in fact it's getting hotter" Peterson
 points out. "In fact, our data, I've got three plus decades of tracking
 data patterns, and normally from middle of March through the summer is 
the soft time of year."&nbsp;

Peterson says that the soft time of year is while crops are in the ground and farmers can wait and see how they come out.&nbsp;

He
 says they then become aggressive near the end of the year to figure out
 what equipment they might need to replace, but right now. &nbsp;

"That's all out the window right now, you have to be proactive and plan ahead," he explains. &nbsp;

Peterson says the market has continued to go higher since April. &nbsp;

Recently,
 Peterson says he saw a 24-year-old John Deere tractor sold in Illinois 
for 21-thousand 500 dollars, selling even higher than it did brand new. &nbsp;

But is there any state where the used farm equipment problem is worse off?&nbsp;

"Nope,
 they're all on fire, and I've never seen that before," Peterson sadly 
says. "And we cover the US and Canada so usually there's always been 
somewhere where used values are softer, and there just isn't now."&nbsp;

Peterson says normally you might see prices differ depending on the region farm equipment is coming from &nbsp;

But,
 since 2021, Peterson says a data point he's seen is the tightness of 
farm equipment is making prices mostly stay the same, no matter the

By MATT PIKE&nbsp; St. Joseph Post&nbsp;ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Nationwide farmers are having issues buying new farm equipment, which is also making it difficult to buy used farm equipment. &nbsp;Greg
 Peterson, better known as Machinery Pete, says there are a couple 
different factors that are causing the rise in the price of used farm 
equipment. &nbsp;"One, is that farm income is up," Peterson 
tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "Commodity prices went up in the fall of 
2020 and have been pushing to very high levels so, that's number one."&nbsp;And number two is the current trend of high prices on new farm equipment&nbsp;"Supply
 chain issues are actually getting worse so manufacturers like John 
Deere or Case IH, they can't make enough," Peterson explains. "Farmers 
want to buy new to update their equipment line."&nbsp;Peterson says 
though those manufacturers can't produce enough equipment to keep up 
with the demand.&nbsp; For example, if you were looking for a new planter 
earlier this spring, all of those were pre ordered last fall. &nbsp;Peterson says the problem is nationwide and so far, is showing no signs of letting up anytime soon&nbsp;"Things
 are always subject to change but I don't see any tea leaves right now 
that would point to a cooling off, in fact it's getting hotter" Peterson
 points out. "In fact, our data, I've got three plus decades of tracking
 data patterns, and normally from middle of March through the summer is 
the soft time of year."&nbsp;Peterson says that the soft time of year is while crops are in the ground and farmers can wait and see how they come out.&nbsp;He
 says they then become aggressive near the end of the year to figure out
 what equipment they might need to replace, but right now. &nbsp;"That's all out the window right now, you have to be proactive and plan ahead," he explains. &nbsp;Peterson says the market has continued to go higher since April. &nbsp;Recently,
 Peterson says he saw a 24-year-old John Deere tractor sold in Illinois 
for 21-thousand 500 dollars, selling even higher than it did brand new. &nbsp;But is there any state where the used farm equipment problem is worse off?&nbsp;"Nope,
 they're all on fire, and I've never seen that before," Peterson sadly 
says. "And we cover the US and Canada so usually there's always been 
somewhere where used values are softer, and there just isn't now."&nbsp;Peterson says normally you might see prices differ depending on the region farm equipment is coming from &nbsp;But,

Expert: Rising prices on used farm equipment won't slow anytime soon

NEW YORK (AP) — Pride parades kicked off in Kansas and around the country Sunday with glittering confetti, cheering crowds, fluttering rainbow flags and newfound fears about losing freedoms won through decades of activism.

The annual marches in Kansas City, Wichita, New York, San Francisco, Chicago and elsewhere took place just two days after one conservative justice on the Supreme Court&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-supreme-court-decision-854f60302f21c2c35129e58cf8d8a7b0">signaled, in a ruling on abortion,</a>&nbsp;that the court should reconsider the right to same-sex marriage recognized in 2015.

“We’re here to make a statement,” said 31-year-old Mercedes Sharpe, who traveled to Manhattan from Massachusetts. “I think it’s about making a point, rather than all the other years like how we normally celebrate it. This one’s really gonna stand out. I think a lot of angry people, not even just women, angry men, angry women.”

Thousands of people — many decked in pride colors — lined the parade route through Manhattan, cheering as floats and marchers passed by. Organizers announced this weekend that a Planned Parenthood contingent would be at the front of the parade.

In Chicago, Mayor Lori Lightfoot called the top court ruling a “momentary setback” and said Sunday’s events were “an opportunity for us to not only celebrate Pride, but be resolved for the fight.”

“We will not live in a world, not in my city, where our rights are taken from us or rolled back,” said Lightfoot, Chicago’s first openly gay mayor, and the first Black woman to hold the office.

In San Francisco, some marchers and spectators held signs condemning the court’s abortion ruling. U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who rode in a convertible holding a gavel and a rainbow fan, said the large turnout was an acknowledgement that Americans support gay rights.

“Even in spite of the majority on the court that’s anti our Constitution, our country knows and loves our LGBTQI+ community,” she told KGO-TV.

The warning shot from the nation’s top court came after a year of legislative defeats for the LGBTQ community, including the passage of laws in some states limiting the discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity with children.

As anti-gay sentiments resurface, some are pushing for the parades to return to their roots — less blocks-long street parties, more overtly civil rights marches.

“It has gone from being a statement of advocacy and protest to being much more of a celebration of gay life,” Sean Clarkin, 67, said of New York City’s annual parade while enjoying a drink recently at Julius’, one of the oldest gay bars in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village.

As he remembers things, the parade was once about defiance and pushing against an oppressive mainstream that saw gays, lesbians and transgender people as unworthy outsiders.

“As satisfying and empowering as it may be to now be accepted by the mainstream,” Clarkin said, “there was also something energizing and wonderful about being on the outside looking in.”

New York’s first Pride March, then called the Christopher Street Liberation Day March, was held in 1970 to mark the first anniversary of the Stonewall rebellion, a spontaneous street uprising triggered by a police raid on a gay bar in Manhattan.

San Francisco’s first march was in 1972 and had been held every year since, except during the last two years of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Celebrations are now global, taking place throughout the year in multiple countries, with many of the biggest parades taking place in June. One of the world’s largest, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, was held June 19.

In the United States, this year’s celebrations take place amid a potential crisis.

In a Supreme Court ruling Friday striking down the right to abortion, Justice Clarence Thomas said in a concurring opinion that the court&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-us-supreme-court-health-government-and-politics-marriage-a0cee537c6f9f10d29fa71f6e7a4d19d">should also reconsider</a>&nbsp;its 2015 decision legalizing same-sex marriage and a 2003 decision striking down laws criminalizing gay sex.

New York City parade spectator Jackie English said she and her fiancee Dana had yet to set a wedding date, but have a new sense of urgency.

“Now we feel a bit pressured,” she said, adding they might “jump the gun a little sooner. Because, what if that right gets taken away from us?”

More than a dozen states have recently enacted laws that go against the interests of LGBTQ communities, including a law barring any mention of sexual orientation in school curricula in Florida and threats of prosecution for parents who allow their children to get gender-affirming care in Texas.

Several states have put laws in place prohibiting transgender athletes from participating in team sports that coincide with the gender in which they identify.

According to an Anti-Defamation League survey released earlier this week, members of LGBTQ communities were more likely than any other group to experience harassment. Two-thirds of respondents said they have been harassed, a little more than half of whom said the harassment was a result of their sexual orientation.

In recent years, schisms over how to commemorate Stonewall have opened, spawning splinter groups events intended to be more protest-oriented.

In New York City, the Queer Liberation March takes place at the same time as the traditional parade, billing itself as the “antidote to the corporate-infused, police-entangled, politician-heavy Parades that now dominate pride celebrations.”

San Francisco’s parade was marked by the return of uniformed police, who were banned in 2020 after a 2019 confrontation with protesters who staged a parade-stopping sit-in. Critics accused them of using excessive force. On Sunday, San Francisco Police Chief William Scott, in full dress uniform, passed out small rainbow pride flags to spectators

Despite the criticism of growing commercialism, a strong streak of activism was apparent among attendees this year.

“The recent overturning of Roe v. Wade has caused a very strong uproar about what went down,” said Dean Jigarjian, 22, who crossed the river from New Jersey with his girlfriend to take part in the New York City parade. “So as you can see here, the crowd seems to be very energized about what could be next.”

Pride parades march on with new urgency in Kansas, across US

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are&nbsp;investigating a fatal pedestrian accident.

Just after 10p.m. Sunday, police were dispatched to the 1200 block of North Broadway regarding a motor vehicle accident, according to&nbsp;Officer Juan Rebolledo.

Officers located a 54-year-old woman who was pronounced deceased, at the scene.

The investigation revealed that the 54-year-old woman was crossing from the west side of North Broadway to the east side of Broadway when she was struck by a maroon, 1984 Pontiac driven by a 30-year-old&nbsp; woman and run over by a white 2010 Nissan Altima driven by a 49-year-old man. Police have not released the victim's name.

TOPEKA — Republican gubernatorial
 candidate Arlyn Briggs recorded a campaign commercial outlining his 
vision of conservative government in Kansas only to find out a prominent
 Christian radio network had no intention of airing the advertisement.

He said an employee at Bott Radio Network in Overland Park explained 
the campaign spot couldn’t be used on the network after learning of 
Briggs’ arrest on a charge of criminal threat against a law enforcement 
officer. The arrest in Allen County was a misunderstanding that ought to
 be resolved in his favor, Briggs said, but the radio network’s rebuff 
was a setback in his primary campaign against GOP frontrunner Derek 
Schmidt, who is the state’s attorney general.

“I’m a strong Christian,” Briggs said. “My job is to be a strong reflection of Jesus Christ.”

Briggs, 64, of rural Kincaid, said the legal trouble stemmed from 
allowing a man being sought by law enforcement for an alleged stalking 
offense to stay with him in early June. Briggs noticed a sheriff’s 
department vehicle driving slowly past his home, so he called the 
department to remind authorities of the “castle doctrine,” the 
stand-your-ground right of individuals in Kansas to take reasonable 
action, including deadly force, in defense of a home.

He warned law enforcement officers not to try anything, he said, and 
pointedly added “I may shoot you.” He said he wouldn’t have actually 
fired on deputies, and nothing happened. But officers later served an 
Anderson County warrant on him for criminal threat. He was released June
 15 from Allen County Jail.

If successful in the Aug. 2 primary against Schmidt, Briggs would 
likely face Democratic frontrunner Gov. Laura Kelly as well as 
independent candidate Dennis Pyle and Libertarian Seth Cordell in 
November. If victorious in the general election, Briggs said he would 
donate his state government salary to charity.

“I feel the primary is where the contest is this year. Kelly is so 
liberal,” Briggs said. “I say vote for the person. Not what they said, 
but what they do.”

Briggs said he was disappointed with Schmidt as a political leader, 
and asserted the attorney general was too focused on getting on U.S. 
Sen. Jerry Moran’s “good list” in anticipation of eventually running for
 Moran’s seat in the U.S. Senate. Briggs said he’d challenged Schmidt to
 five debates, but hadn’t received a response.

“I think there’s growing concern among conservatives across the 
United States and Kansas with what’s happening with government and our 
leaders,” Briggs said.

On social media last year, Briggs was critical of state legislators 
who he claimed talked about the value of local government control and 
then passed bills stripping local elected officials of influence. He 
said Democratic and Republican politicians at the statehouse believed 
they were “God’s appointed Kings over the serfs.” He said they all 
should be taught a lesson by being voted out of office.

Briggs ran for the Kansas House in 2012 and 2020, but lost both 
contests. He was soundly defeated in the most recent campaign, falling 
to state Rep. Trevor Jacobs, with Jacobs securing 83% of the vote in a 
GOP primary.

He said he lived in Johnson County for about 30 years. He worked for a
 Kansas City bank and at Hallmark and has been employed as a trucker and
 farmer. He performed mission work in more than a dozen countries, he 
said.

Briggs’ lieutenant governor running mate is Abilene resident Lance 
Berland, who Briggs said recently performed community service in 
Colorado to deal with his own legal challenges.

On social media, Berland said “we the people” were engaged in a fight
 against Republican and Democrat “warmongers,” the “most bloated, 
wasteful bureaucracy in human history” and “corrupt crony capitalists.” 
He claimed businessman George Soros, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, 
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Berkshire Hathaway chairman Warren Buffett
 were involved in demise of U.S. freedom.

“We have been played, and Americans killed, by our own government and
 the ultra-wealthy non-citizens who dominate our nation from Davos, 
Geneva, and Brussels,” he said. “These people have perpetuated and 
delivered the world only racism, eugenics, war, toxicity, disease and 
unnecessary deaths by the hundreds of millions. These people serve only 
themselves and the devil.”

He also expressed disappointment Presidents Donald Trump and Joe 
Biden were convinced by the “global health mafia” to recommend Americans
 be vaccinated against COVID-19.

The court&nbsp;<a href="https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/21pdf/21-418_i425.pdf" target="_blank">ruled 6-3</a>&nbsp;for the coach with the court’s conservative justices in the majority and its liberals in dissent. The justices said the coach’s prayer was protected by the First Amendment.

“The Constitution and the best of our traditions counsel mutual respect and tolerance, not censorship and suppression, for religious and nonreligious views alike,”&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-ap-top-news-courts-supreme-courts-antonin-scalia-f5a557876d5546cca4ebd53b4860e2ed">Justice Neil Gorsuch</a>&nbsp;wrote for the majority.

The case forced the justices to wrestle with how to balance the religious and free speech rights of teachers and coaches with the rights of students not to feel pressured into participating in religious practices. The outcome could strengthen the acceptability of some religious practices in some other public school settings.

The decision is the latest in a line of Supreme Court rulings for religious plaintiffs. In another recent example, the court ruled that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-decision-religious-schools-aid-85645580702ed5ff125cf9760024ae89">Maine can’t exclude religious schools</a>&nbsp;from a program that offers tuition aid for private education, a decision that could ease religious organizations’ access to taxpayer money.

In a dissent in Monday, Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote that the coach decision “sets us further down a perilous path in forcing states to entangle themselves with religion.” She was joined in her dissent by Justice Stephen Breyer and Justice Elena Kagan.

That the court ruled for the coach is perhaps not surprising. In 2019, the court declined to take up the case at an early stage, but four of the court’s conservatives agreed that a lower court decision in favor of the school district was “troubling” for its “understanding of the free speech rights of public school teachers.”

The case before the justices involved Joseph Kennedy, a Christian and former football coach at Bremerton High School in Bremerton, Washington. Kennedy started coaching at the school in 2008 and initially prayed alone on the 50-yard line at the end of games. But students started joining him, and over time he began to deliver a short, inspirational talk with religious references. Kennedy did that for years and led students in locker room prayers. The school district learned what he was doing in 2015 and asked him to stop.

Kennedy stopped leading students in prayer in the locker room and on the field but wanted to continue praying on the field himself, with students free to join if they wished. MOSCOW (AP) — More than four months after she was arrested at a Moscow airport for cannabis possession, a Russian court has set the start date for the criminal trial of the American basketball star Brittney Griner for July 1. 

The Phoenix Mercury star could remain in Russian custody until late autumn as the court extended her detention for a fourth time. Griner could face 10 years in prison if convicted on charges of large-scale transportation of drugs. 

Fewer than 1% of defendants in Russian criminal cases are acquitted, and unlike in the U.S., acquittals can be overturned. On Monday, the court in the Moscow suburb of Khimki extended Griner’s detention for another six months.

The Phoenix Mercury star, considered in some polls to be the United States’ most gifted female athlete, could face 10 years in prison if convicted on charges of large-scale transportation of drugs. Fewer than 1% of defendants in Russian criminal cases are acquitted, and unlike in the U.S., acquittals can be overturned.

The trial date has not been announced, but is expected soon; Griner was recently ordered to remain in pretrial detention until July 2. The hearing in the court of the Moscow suburb of Khimki is to address procedural issues.

Griner’s detention and trial come at an extraordinarily low point in Moscow-Washington relations. She was arrested at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport less than a week before Russia sent troops into Ukraine, which aggravated already-high tensions with sweeping sanctions by the United States and Russia’s denunciation of U.S. weapon supplies to Ukraine.

Amid the tensions, Griner’s supporters had taken a low profile in hopes of a quiet resolution, until May, when the State Department reclassified her as wrongfully detained and shifted oversight of her case to its special presidential envoy for hostage affairs — effectively the U.S. government’s chief negotiator.

That move has drawn additional attention to Griner’s case, with supporters encouraging a prisoner swap like the one in April that brought home Marine veteran Trevor Reed in exchange for a Russian pilot convicted of drug trafficking conspiracy.

Russian news media have repeatedly raised speculation that she could be swapped for Russian arms trader Viktor Bout, nicknamed “The Merchant of Death,” who is serving a 25-year sentence on conviction of conspiracy to kill U.S. citizens and providing aid to a terrorist organization.

Russia has agitated for Bout’s release for years. But the discrepancy between Griner’s case — she allegedly was found in possession of vape cartridges containing cannabis oil — and Bout’s global dealings in deadly weapons could make such a swap unpalatable to the U.S.

Others have suggested that she could be traded in tandem with Paul Whelan, a former Marine and security director serving a 16-year sentence on an espionage conviction that the United States has repeatedly described as a set-up.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, asked Sunday on CNN whether a joint swap of Griner and Whelan for Bout was being considered, sidestepped the question.

“As a general proposition ... I have got no higher priority than making sure that Americans who are being illegally detained in one way or another around the world come home,” he said. But “I can’t comment in any detail on what we’re doing, except to say this is an absolute priority.”

Any swap would apparently require Griner to first be convicted and sentenced, then apply for a presidential pardon, Maria Yarmush, a lawyer specializing in international civil affairs, told Kremlin-funded TV channel RT.

KANSAS CITY (AP) —Praise and lament for the overturning of abortion rights filled sacred spaces this weekend as clergy across the U.S. rearranged worship plans or rewrote sermons to provide their religious context -- and competing messages -- about the historic moment.

Abortion is a visceral issue for deeply divided religious Americans. Some are sad or angry in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s seismic Dobbs v. Jackson decision Friday. Others are grateful and elated.

At St. Paul Cathedral in Pittsburgh, the Very Rev. Kris Stubna discarded his planned Sunday homily and focused on the decision, calling it “a day of great joy and blessing.” He said the overturning of the nearly 50-year-old Roe v. Wade ruling was the result of prayers and efforts of many Catholics and others.

“This law violated the very law of God, that every life is sacred,” he said. “A person cannot support abortion and still be a faithful member of the church.”

Stubna’s comments would be considered divisive by some since U.S. Catholics disagree on abortion rights. Supporters include high-profile members of the faith like President Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi who face Communion restrictions as a result.

Not everyone sat through Stubna’s entire homily. Although unable to ask their reasons, an Associated Press photographer saw one woman leave during it. Security personnel estimated three others also exited early.

Views on abortions are not just polarizing within denominations; the divisions span the religious landscape.

“SCOTUS just dealt a terrible blow to women, to girls, to all childbearing people, to freedom,” said the Rev. Jacqui Lewis, senior minister at Middle Collegiate Church, a multicultural Protestant congregation in Manhattan.

She mourned the overturning of Roe, expressing deep emotions during a service Sunday, saying, “It took safe legal abortions off the table, opening the door for states to rush in and crush reproductive justice. We are reeling. Spinning. So hurt we can hardly move. We are feeling the loss, the pain of it.”

A majority of adults from Buddhist, Hindu, historically Black Protestant, Jewish, mainline Protestant, Muslim and Orthodox Christian faiths support legal abortion in all or most cases, according to a Pew Research Center’s Religious Landscape Study.

Rabbi Sarah DePaolo carved out time at the start of Friday night’s Shabbat service at Congregation Shir Ha-Ma’alot in Irvine, California, to express her disappointment, urging community members to support each other and create space for the fearful.

“One of the most upsetting things about this decision is that while it claims to represent people of faith, it does not represent our faith,” DePaolo said. “It does not reflect our Jewish law. It does not reflect our traditions. It does not reflect our community.”

Catholics are split on the issue while most evangelical Protestants, Jehovah’s Witnesses and members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints say abortion should be illegal in all or most instances, according to the Pew Research Center study.

The Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, views the ruling as a moral and spiritual victory. On Sunday, he told his California congregation at New Season that now is the time for an unprecedented adoption movement.

“We’re gonna adopt babies, but we’re gonna adopt moms, pregnant moms ... who have abortions because they can’t afford to have a baby,” he said.

Southern Baptists, who are members of the nation’s largest Protestant denomination, are staunch supporters of anti-abortion views. On Sunday, several pastors praised the ruling from their pulpits.

The congregation at First Baptist Concord in Knoxville, Tennessee, broke into applause when Pastor John Mark Harrison addressed it. He invited a panel of advocates to explain how everyone can continue supporting those with unwanted pregnancies via mentorship, fostering, adoption, addressing systemic issues and more.

“There’s so much anger and emotion,” Harrison said. “What we need to understand is that we’re not called to fuel the emotions of the right or the left. We’re called to walk in and through the gospel of Jesus Christ ... and minister to real people in real times of crisis.”

At Central Church, in College Station, Texas, lead Pastor Phillip Bethancourt echoed that overturning Roe is not the finish line: “It’s the starting gate of a new chapter. Abortion should be not just be unlawful but unnecessary and unthinkable.”

David Rhoades, lead pastor of Broadview Baptist Church in Lubbock, Texas, said in an email the court decision was on a par with the Emancipation Proclamation and Juneteenth, and will reverberate for years.

He hoped church members left Sunday’s service with a clear understanding of what they must do next, including ”minister to both the baby and its mother, and continue to work to elect pro-life representatives.”

Other faith leaders doubled down on their support for abortion rights.

Women should be able to make their own decisions, preached the Rev. Fletcher Harper at the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour in Secaucus, New Jersey.

“Outlawing abortion is a sinful act that perpetuates male domination and the subjugation of women,” he said. “It extends the coercive power of the state into a place where it should have no business.”

During a service Sunday at the Unitarian Universalist Church of the South Hills in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania, director of music Mary Pratt read aloud a denominational statement affirming it would remain “committed to reproductive justice.”

Pratt said members were shocked and grieving, although they expected the outcome. “They were looking for reminders of why we need to get back out and fight,” she said.

The start of services at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Durham, North Carolina, included two verses of “We Shall Overcome” and a prayer by the Rev. Melinda Keenan Wood for those outraged, heartbroken and fearful about Roe’s demise.

“We know that this decision will be measured in deaths, incarcerations and life-altering trauma as politicians rush to control the most painfully intimate of decisions,” Keenan Wood said.

A prominent Black pastor in Columbus, Ohio — Bishop Timothy Clarke of the First Church of God — tried to strike a balance in his Saturday message to congregants, acknowledging conflicting views on abortion and calling on the church to show compassion.

“I know and love persons in both camps,” Clarke said. “They are sincere, committed. ... They truly see this as a life altering issue.”

After Roe's demise, clergy lead faithful in praise, laments

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Saturday signed&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/congress-gun-violence-bill-live-updates-20f7c9738fee4eba1d7fed155301ee25">the most sweeping gun violence bill</a>&nbsp;in decades, a bipartisan compromise that seemed unimaginable until a recent series of mass shootings, including the massacre of 19 students and two teachers at a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/uvalde-school-shooting">Texas elementary school</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Citing the families of shooting victims he has met, the president said, “Their message to us was, ‘Do something.’ How many times did we hear that? ‘Just do something. The House gave final approval Friday, following Senate passage Thursday, and Biden acted just before leaving Washington for two summits in Europe.

“Today we say, ‘More than enough,’” Biden said. “It’s time, when it seems impossible to get anything done in Washington, we are doing something consequential.”

The legislation will toughen background checks for the youngest gun buyers, keep firearms from more domestic violence offenders and help states put in place red flag laws that make it easier for authorities to take weapons from people adjudged to be dangerous.

The president called it “a historic achievement.”

Most of its $13 billion cost will help bolster mental health programs and aid schools, which have been targeted in Newtown, Connecticut, and Parkland, Florida, and elsewhere in mass shootings.

And Saturday’s ceremony came less than 24 hours after the high court overturned the Roe v. Wade decision, which had legalized abortion nationwide for nearly five decades.“Yesterday, I spoke about the Supreme Court’s shocking decision striking down Roe v. Wade,” Biden said. “Jill and I know how painful and devastating the decision is for so many Americans. I mean so many Americans.”He noted that the abortion ruling leaves enforcement up to the states, some of which have already moved to ban abortion or will soon do so. Biden said his administration will “focus on how they administer it and whether or not they violate other laws, like deciding to not allow people to cross state lines to get health services.”Asked by reporters about whether the Supreme Court was broken, Biden said, “I think the Supreme Court has made some terrible decisions.” He walked away without answering more questions, noting, ” “I have a helicopter waiting for me to take off.”While the new gun law does not include tougher restrictions long championed by Democrats, such as a ban on assault-style weapons and background checks for all firearm transactions, it is the most impactful gun violence measure produced by Congress since enactment a long-expired assault weapons ban in 1993.Enough congressional Republicans joined Democrats in supporting the steps after recent rampages in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/buffalo-supermarket-shooting">Buffalo, New York</a>&nbsp;and Uvalde, Texas. It took weeks of closed-door talks but senators emerged with a compromise.Biden signed the bill just before departing Washington for a summit of the Group of Seven leading economic powers — the United States, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan — in Germany. He will travel later to Spain for a NATO meeting.
